This paper provides a conceptual elaboration of the role of Problem-based Learning (PBL) in the integration of social sciences and humanities (SSH) with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and an analysis of the challenges this brings about. SSH-STEM integration is an endeavor that is timely, relevant, and urgent given the insufficient answers that higher education provides to the challenges social science and (especially) humanity faces. PBL can be argued as a pedagogical model to naturally cater to this demand. Based on two cases of integrated study programs from Aalborg University, Denmark, we analyze and discuss challenges and potential pitfalls in integrating SSH and STEM. As a result, we pinpoint learnings that can serve as timely guides in future iterations of problem-based, inter- and transdisciplinary endeavors in higher education.

Autonomy of operations combined with decentralised management of data has given rise to a number of heterogeneous databases or information systems within an enterprise. These systems are often incompatible in structure as well as content and hence difficult to integrate. This thesis investigates the problem of heterogeneous database integration, in order to meet the increasing demand for obtaining meaningful information from multiple databases without disturbing local autonomy. In spite of heterogeneity, the unity of overall purpose within a common application domain, nevertheless, provides a degree of semantic similarity which manifests itself in the form of similar data structures and common usage patterns of existing information systems. This work introduces a conceptual integration approach that exploits the similarity in meta level information in existing systems and performs metadata mining on database objects to discover a set of concepts common to heterogeneous databases within the same application domain. The conceptual integration approach proposed here utilises the background knowledge available in database structures and usage patterns and generates a set of concepts that serve as a domain abstraction and provide a conceptual layer above existing legacy systems. This conceptual layer is further utilised by an information re-engineering framework that customises and packages information to reflect the unique needs of different user groups within the application domain. The architecture of the information re-engineering framework is based on an object-oriented model that represents the discovered concepts as customised application objects for each distinct user group.

A data warehouse is a giant information pot made by integrating data from different data sources. Its schema can easily become complicated in order to hold all historical data. This complexity can confuse end users. The Conceptual Integration Modeling (CIM) framework was proposed to bridge the gap between users and the schema by adding a user-defined conceptual layer. This thesis aims to fulfill the query processor component in the CIM framework. Traditional query languages like SQL require a relatively tough learning curve, which is too dynamic for business users. Instead we propose a new CIM query language and a query interface to work with the visual representation of the CIM framework. This query interface only focuses on user needs and hides unnecessary implementation details to the back end. Thus, it is easy for business users to pose queries. In addition, we also do some optimization on the query processor by selecting views to materialize. Our proposed algorithm can achieve the lower performance bound of 46.7% of the optimal solution.

In the context of business intelligence (BI), the accuracy and accessibility of information consolidation play an important role. Integrating data from different sources involves its transformation according to constraints expressed in an appropriate language. The Conceptual Integration Modelling framework (CIM) acts as such a language. The CIM is aimed to allow business users to specify what information is needed in a simplified and comprehensive language. Achieving this requires raising the level of abstraction to the conceptual level, so that users are able to pose queries expressed in a conceptual query language (CQL). The CIM is comprised of three facets: an Extended Entity Relationship (EER) model (a high level conceptual model that is used to design databases), a conceptual schema against which users pose their queries, a relational multidimensional model that represents data sources, and mappings between the conceptual schema and sources. Such mappings can be specified in two ways: in the first scenario, the so-called global-as-view (GAV), the global schema is mapped to views over the relational sources by specifying how to obtain tuples of the global relation from tuples in the sources. In the second scenario, sources may contain less detailed information (a more aggregated data) so the local relations are defined as views over global relations that is called as local-as-view (LAV). In this thesis, we address the problem of expressibility and decidability of queries written in CQL. We first define the semantics of the CIM by translating the conceptual model so we could translate it into a set of first order sentences containing a class of conceptual dependencies (CDs) - tuple-generating dependencies (TGDs) and equality generating dependencies (EGDs), in addition to certain (first order) restrictions to express multidimensionality. Here a multidimensionality means that facts in a data warehouse can be described from different perspectives. The EGDs set the equality between tuples and the TGDs set the rule that two instances are in a subtype association (more precise definitions are given further in the thesis). We use a non-conflicting class of conceptual dependencies that guarantees a query's decidability. The non-conflicting dependencies avoid an interaction between TGDs and EGDs. Our semantics extend the existing semantics defined for extended entity relationship models to the notions of fact, dimension category, dimensional hierarchy and dimension attributes. In addition, a class of conceptual queries will be defined and proven to be decidable. A DL-Lite logic has been extensively used for query rewriting as it allows us to reduce the complexity of the query answering to AC0. Moreover, we present a query rewriting algorithm for the class of defined conceptual dependencies. Finally, we consider the problem in light of GAV and LAV approaches and prove the query answering complexities. The query answering problem becomes decidable if we add certain constraints to a well-known set of EGDs + TGDs dependencies to guarantee summarizability. The query answering problem in light of the global-as-a-view approach of mapping has AC0 data complexity and EXPTIME combined complexity. This problem becomes coNP hard if we are to consider it a LAV approach of mapping.

Conceptual development and conceptual change processes are described by a longitudinal study on preschool children’s conception of the earth. Conceptual change is often described as a causal process in which changes in an embraced system of beliefs result in a new system of beliefs. A normative line of research has been dominating the research field of conceptual change. There has been a search for specific conceptions that are missing in the learners’ reasoning or that prevent conceptual change from occur. Here, the learner’s capacity of reasoning is focused. The children’s reasoning is described in its own right (Driver &amp; Easley, 1978). It is argued that conceptual change is to be understood as an intentional activity with regard to the learner, that is, what the learner is doing when trying to understand something. Children were interviewed annually from four to six years of age. There were 37 children participating, of which 29 were followed during all three years. The children were interviewed about their conceptions of the earth. The results directs the focus of conceptual change from specific conceptions to structural changes. The children processed a lot of conflicting information. However, there does not appear to be any specific conflict that causes the process of conceptual change to occur. Rather, conceptual change is about the reorganization of the sum total of beliefs and to find adequate contexts to which they relate. Conceptual change involves a simultaneous processing of information and complex conception as well as revisions and changes at a model level, and all of this processing is related to contexts for description and explanation. The result also indicates some core stability in reasoning over the course of the investigation.<br><p>At the time of the doctoral defence the folowing papers were unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 1: Manuscript; Paper 2: Manuscript.</p>

The Army is often required to deploy soldiers into dangerous situations to offer assistance and relief. When deployed, these soldiers need to be aware of the potential dangers, properly assess the level of possible threats, and make the best choices to respond. One solution for this problem space is to have an intelligent system that recognizes scenes which may contain danger, regardless of the type or timeframe associated with that danger. This type of system would help make decisions about what to do in situations where danger may be prevalent. Thus, creating an intelligent system that could identify the scene and contextual information, for example, potential dangers, would provide greater situational understanding and support autonomous systems and solider interactions. As a proxy for representing scenes that may be similar to those encountered by soldiers, a set of images of natural or manmade disasters were selected and used to identify strengths and weaknesses in existing models for this type of intelligent system. In this work, images from CRISISMMD, a dataset of natural disasters tweets, as well as other images of disasters in the public domain which do not belong to any particular dataset, are used. For the initial phase of the work this dataset was used to determine and showcase the strengths and weaknesses of existing object recognition and visual question answering systems that when combined would create a prototype intelligent system. Specifically, YOLO (You Only Look Once), augmented with Word2Vec (a natural language processing (NLP) system which finds the similarities of different words in a very large corpus) was selected for performing the object recognition (Bochkovskiy et al. 2020). This system was selected to identify objects further based on the presence of other, similar objects using the similarities between their names. Also, CLIP (Contrastive Language Image Pretraining), which identifies the probabilities of scenes based on a certain number of possibilities and BLIP (Bootstrapping Language Image Pretraining) (Li et al. 2022), an advanced visual question answering system which is also capable of generating captions for images were explored. In addition, a concept of an intelligent system where contextual information is identified and utilized can be used to support situational understanding.

While the knowledge on immigrants’ integration consolidated through the last 50 years, the Roma studies and the research on the Roma inclusion seems at the beginning. The purpose of this research was to assess if and to what extent the Swiss experience in immigrants’ integration may inspire an efficient approach to Roma inclusion in the Romanian society. After highlighting conceptual vagueness, resemblance and difference in the overall social status of Romanian Roma and immigrants in Switzerland and official approaches to the integration or inclusion of each, the research concludes that the Romanian policy on Roma inclusion presumably can be better anchored in the integration conceptual framework and benefit from immigrants’ integration experience. The Romanian choice for framing its Roma policy as ‘inclusion’ rather than for ‘integration’ may be appropriate as it applies to a historic minority of citizens needing social justice. The use of an immigration integration policy as model for a Roma inclusion strategy is limited due to the stronger legit-imation of historic minorities for shared-ownership of public decision-making. That is the Swiss example of immigrants’ integration could only serve Romania as a minimum standard for its Roma inclusion strategy. It can benefit from the Swiss experience on immigrant's integration policy in terms of conception, coordination, monitoring and transparency may be beneficial, while the Roma political participation may find inspiration from the Swiss linguistic communities’ participatory mechanisms. The on-going reciprocal learning process connecting academia and public authorities able to transform science into action and experience in knowledge may inspire the Romanian authorities.

Entity Relationship (ER) diagrams are among the most popular formalisms for the support of database design [7, 12, 17, 6]. Their classical use in the (usually computer aided) database design process can roughly be described as follows: after evaluating the requirements of the application, the database designer constructs an ER schema, which represents the conceptual model of the new database. CASE tools can be used to automatically transform the ER schema into a relational database schema, which is then manually fine-tuned. During the last years, the initially rather simple ER formalisms has been extended by various means of expressivity to account for new, more complex application areas such as schema integration for data warehouses [12, 3, 13]. Designing a conceptual model with such enriched ER diagrams is a nontrivial task: there exist complex interactions between the various means of expressivity, which quite often result in unnoticed inconsistencies in the ER schemas and in implicit ramifications of the modeling that have not been intended by the designer. To address this problem, Description Logics (DLs) have been proposed and succesfully used as a tool for reasoning about ER diagrams and thereby detecting the aforementioned anomalies [5, 6, 8].

The new renewable sources, such as sun or wind, show a specific set of characteristics such as geographical and temporal variability that challenge their integration into traditional energy systems to supply electricity. These aspects have a great impact in the operation of electricity systems that go from the need for generation reserve in the system in order to guarantee operational reliability to possible changes in network and electricity infrastructure planning. The report is structured as follows: Section 1 provides an overview of renewables in Latin America; Section 2 includes a conceptual analysis of how the penetration of NCREs impacts power systems; ection 3 provides a brief description of some solutions being or which could be applied to optimize the penetration of NCREs while maximizing it; Section 4 discusses some basic conceptual aspects that should be considered when dealing with the problem of long-term power system planning; Section 5 provides a general review of the main computer approaches being applied or studied in order to support decision-making for expanding electricity systems, for both the generation and the network side (transmission and distribution); Section 6 analyzes a series of experiences from a selection of Latin American countries. The aim is to briefly describe how each country is conducting its planning processes, focusing on the computer tools being used; Finally, Section 7 provides conclusions and improvement recommendations.

Description logics are knowledge representation and reasoning formalisms which represent conceptual knowledge on an abstract logical level. Concrete domains are a theoretically well-founded approach to the integration of description logic reasoning with reasoning about concrete objects such as numbers, time intervals or spatial regions. In this paper, the complexity of combined reasoning with description logcis and on concrete domains is investigated. We extend ALC(D), which is the basic description logic for reasoning with concrete domains, by the operators 'feature agreement' and 'feature disagreement'. For the extended logic,called ALCF(D), an algorithm for deciding the ABox consistency problem is devised. The strategy employed by this algorithm is vital for the efficient implementation of reasoners for description logics incorporating concrete domains. Based on the algorithm, it is proved that the standard reasoning problems for both logics ALC(D) and ALCF(D) are PSpace-complete - provided that the satisfiability test of the concrete domain used is in PSpace.

This module, aimed at helping both English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers and their students, is the result of a qualitative, applied, transversal and constructivist research conducted with Open Lingua teachers. One of the objectives of said research was to establish the factors that favored and hindered the curriculum integration of open access bilingual dictionaries in that specific EFL context in order to design and implement some pedagogical and didactic initiatives that would foster the effective use of those lexical tools. The present module was a fundamental element within the series of proposals that arose along the research. Its main objective was to provide the teachers with the necessary conceptual knowledge and didactic strategies and resources to teach their students how to use that kind of online dictionary with higher degrees of ease, enjoyment, and efficiency, and, thus, to reduce the frequency of look up errors. This module offers a variety of digital resources, handouts, and hands-on and assessment activities that can greatly facilitate their job when teaching dictionary skills to their students.

This research aims to study the achievement or failure of the promotion projects implemented by the Public Relations Department’s Regional Offices. The objectives of this study are two fold. First, to evaluate the three promotion projects: Democracy Promotion Project, Drug Prevention and Solution Promotion Project, and AIDS Prevention and Solution Promotion Project under the Action Plan of the Public Relations Department, fiscal year 2000. Second, to investigate the factors relating to the achievements or failures of these three promotion projects under study. The conceptual framework is developed by applying the Mazmanian and Sabatier’ criteria conditions for policies evaluation. As policies are interpreted in term of promotion projects, the output is the dissemination of knowledge and information to the target groups. In order to find out whether and how the knowledge and information effect the target audiences in their implementation, Rogers’s theory of Diffusion of Innovations is used to support the study. The research methodology is an integration of qualitative and quantitative approached. In the conceptual framework there are two sub-models of study. The qualitative approach for data analysis based on Mazmanian and Sabatier’s criteria conditions for policy evaluation is one part of the framework. The variables for the qualitative data analysis are commitment and skills of the officials, hierarchical integration, changing socioeconomic conditions, diversity of target groups, level of clarity of the objectives of projects, causal theories of projects, and budget and resources. The are the causes of the outputs which are types of media, frequency of message and characteristics of message. The quantitative approach for data analysis, the other of the model, is based on Roger’s theory of Diffusion of Innovations. The sub-model of the quantitative approach is at the other side of the general conceptual framework. The variables of the quantitative data analysis are knowledge, comprehension, attitude, decision and implementation. The research results indicate that the officials have moderate commitment and skills in attaining the target goals of the policy of the promotion projects. By having commitment and skills, especially skills in communication and media selection they can implement the promotion projects under the constraint of budget and resources, as well as under the political interference. The level of the objectives of the promotion projects is perceived as moderate and the causal theories are perceived as highly significant by the public relations officials and frontline implementers. This enables them to understand how to select the type of media use which is moderately successful in disseminating the knowledge of the promotion projects and their activities appropriate to the target groups who are upper secondary students. In summary, the implementation of the policies which are interpreted in terms of promotion projects and activities are moderately successful. Two factors are found. They are political interference and the constraint of broader participation. They are significant to the success or failure of an implementation of policy in the Thai bureaucracy. Based on the findings, the researcher suggests that at the policy level, the National Public Relation Policy be more recognized in its importance by the top executives and should be implemented more frequently than it is actually at present. The National Public Relations Policy should be put in every national economic and social development plan. In the past, it was put in the Sixth National Economic and Social Development Plan only. At the implementation level, training courses in public relations campaign planning are particularly needed. There should be also more participation from the frontline implementers in decision making at the national level because they are the persons who are close to the local situation.
