The relevance of graduate training in the Department of Resource Economics at the University of Massachusetts is investigated through a survey of graduates. The survey questionnaire and measures of relevancy are discussed. Results are presented for three cohorts: graduates currently in Ph.D. programs, M.S. graduates currently employed, and Ph.D. graduates currently employed. Results for all cohorts indicate that their graduate training is relevant to their jobs; however, all cohorts also favored increased application and reduced mathematics and theory. In addition, graduates suggested the need to bolster graduate training in economics with applied courses in business to improve competitiveness in private job markets.

The article is devoted to the relevant problem of the formation of successful competitiveness of young professionals in the regional labor market, i.e. the development of a competitiveness model of a university graduate. The article discusses the concept of «a specialist’s competitiveness» and substantiates the authors’ point of view on its content. The authors have analyzed the existing Russian and foreign approaches to the definition of the essence of a specialist’s competitiveness and highlighted the key competencies for the formation of successful competitiveness of a university graduate. The authors presented the results of the study, a sociological survey of employers, conducted in 2017, which allowed them to rank the competencies in terms of their importance for the production process. Methodological research tools include a sociological survey, statistical data processing and a survey of employers in the Irkutsk region. In the process of the study, a correlation between the form of ownership of the enterprise and the employers' assessment of the professional, business and personal competencies of a young specialist was established. The authors proposed a hypothesis that the employer’s belonging to the public or private sector determines different requirements for certain competencies of a young specialist. The results of the study were presented at the scientific and methodological seminar in Irkutsk State University. The proposed competitiveness model of a university graduate is recommended for use when creating «twin models» of service industry enterprises of the region.

The competitiveness of university graduates is largely determined by its capacity to create and maintain competitive advantage. Based on the Porters' Diamond model, this study measures the competitive advantage of universities in Indonesia, especially the master's level of education. This model has almost never been in educational institutions, except for economic / business sectors. The data were collected through a survey and interpreted by the Porters' Diamond Compatibility Analysis. The competitiveness of master of education graduates in Indonesia is already in good level but is still considered low in the Southeast Asian level. Four factors of Porters' Diamond competitiveness have low supporting capacity so that it leads to the less competitiveness of the graduates. Strengthening the supporting capacity of demand conditions, educational relevance, and educational strategies are then becoming top priorities, including strengthening specific skills and developing sector-based competency.

Abstract The aim of the paper is to find the competitiveness of Latvian university graduates in Latvia and the European Union labour market concerning aspects of entrepreneurship education. To achieve the purpose of this study to determine the competitive and qualitative levels of Latvian universities and necessary improvements that need to be made, a survey of 4,909 graduates (from the years 2006-2011) representing six Latvia universities was performed between November-December, 2011. Results indicate that, in general, the graduates consider themselves competitive in the Latvian labour market. The graduates have positive opinions concerning the quality of theoretical knowledge as well as the abilities to present information and to evaluate, analyse and systematise it. At the same time, there are serious improvements that are necessary in regard to entrepreneurship education and to increase the competitiveness of Latvian universities, which can be done by improving the quality of the study process, the content of courses, teaching (learning) methods and the attitudes of academic staff to better motive students to develop their skills emphasising the practical side of the study process

This paper is a literature review, presenting the concept of regional innovation systems (RIS) and identifying criteria and indicators for measurement of university competitiveness within these systems. A regional innovation system is defined as an interactive learning engagement among a network of various actors within an institutional framework. It is built around the core idea that innovation stems from interactions within a network of different actors. The development of RIS is fostered by the European Commission in its attempts to make Europe and the EU the world’s most competitive and dynamic economy by embracing the whole innovation chain from education to economic impact, popular as the “knowledge triangle” of education, research and innovation. Universities contribute to the creation and dissemination of new knowledge and the generation of intellectual capital. In such context, the two most frequently cited criteria used to measure the university competitiveness are knowledge transfer and regional engagement. Knowledge transfer is defined by industry income, patents, co-publications with industrial partners, and spin-offs, while regional engagement – by graduates working in the region, student internships in the region, regional joint publications and income from regional sources.

The thesis consists of five papers: three deal with the efficiency of higher education institutions (HEI) and two with entrepreneurship among university graduates. The efficiency of HEIs is analyzed at three different levels: units of one university, universities of one country and universities of a group of European countries. Using data envelopment analysis (DEA) the first paper compares technical efficiency among university units at the Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm). An interesting result is that there seems to be a complementary relationship between efficiency of resource utilization in teaching and in research. The second paper applies stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) to estimate the cost efficiency of Swedish higher education institutions. According to the estimates, half of the Swedish HEIs have an above average efficiency of 85 percent. The efficiency differences are mainly influenced by the source of funding, HEI size, the number of students per faculty as well as faculty and student compositions. The third paper analyses the cost efficiency of universities among a set of public higher education institutions from six European countries by means of stochastic frontier techniques. The results suggest small variation in the mean economic efficiency of higher education institutions from UK, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Switzerland, implying that the efficiency differences are not explained by country effects. Instead the variations in efficiency are related to organizational differences. The two essays on entrepreneurship among university graduates are based on a unique dataset encompassing individual level data on all employees registered in the Swedish labor market. The first paper explores the differences in entrepreneurial choice of graduates from different universities. The main finding from this paper is that the entrepreneurial choice of graduates from internationally ranked Swedish universities systematically differs from others with the difference varying by the area of education. The second paper on entrepreneurship aims at explaining the high interest in entrepreneurship among arts graduates and finds that the need for self-expression is among the main motivations for their high interest in entrepreneurship.

Graduates' transitions into university, their university preparation and transitions to employment are influenced by their contextual learning and experiences. This thesis focuses on the preparation for and entry into work of the 1999 cohort of graduates at one higher education institution in West London. The research uses two research design methodologies to explore the graduates' ultimate entry into work. The research study uses a quantitative employment destination data set to investigate the employment destinations of the graduates. The research also uses a qualitative approach, focusing on individual biographies using semi-structured interviews for data gathering, to investigate the impact of biographical and contextual variation on the 1999 cohort's preparation for employment. The research study explores the impact of graduates' curricular antecedents on their preparation for employment by investigating the way they pass thorough periods of transition within education and into work. It seeks to understand and explain how these transition points interact with their experiences of higher education and how such interactions better shape their preparation for and transition into employment. The results show that graduates' transitions into university, their university preparation and transitions to employment are influenced by a range of contextual and experiential variables.

The purpose of this research was to assess the effects of cooperative education on the transition to work of graduates in engineering and engineering-related programs at Canadian universities. It was theorized that the cooperative experience would result in a higher level of socialization to the organization than to the profession or to academia. It was expected that this higher level of organizational socialization would manifest itself in increased levels of organizational commitment and career development. The research model was based on a three-period process of Input (pre-university), Throughput (during university), and Output (post-university), each with its own set of variables. The methodology chosen for this research was qualitative rather than quantitative since the variables were complex and multidimensional in nature. An interview protocol was developed and pretested then applied in a procedure involving a sample size of 103 participants: students in their last semester, and employees within 5 years of graduation. Since students self-select into coop or traditional programs, the comparison of coop participant data directly to non-coop was inappropriate; thus non-coop data were used as a point of reference from which to view coop data. Participants were chosen as closely as possible to random from the student population at three Canadian universities, and from Ottawa-area companies. Results indicated that the coop experience does indeed prepare graduates to enter full-time work with fewer transition problems than graduates from non-coop programs; that graduates from both coop and non-coop programs are committed more to their own career development than to organization, profession, or to academia; and that pre-university influences tend to influence socialization from structured work experiences. The coop experience tends to reinforce traits that were already present, including the drive for achievement; this approach meets the needs of those choosing it, just as the traditional approach meets the needs of its students. A related survey of students at a business school where the program is traditional but the methodology is based on practical case studies with strong faculty influence indicated that the subjects were also well prepared to enter work. Future research in this area is warranted; a longitudinal approach would yield more valid results than cross-sectional studies.

The problem statement to be proposed in this article is that student employability suffers as a result of the fact that students do not make use of the available employment skills training, offered by the CUT, which will enable them to present themselves in a professional manner to prospective employers when entering the labour market. Certain suggestions will be offered in this publication of how the CUT could go about creating opportunities for students to enable them to successfully enter the labour market, after the completion of their studies.

Nigerian policy is inconsistent with regard to the promotion of entrepreneurship among young adults in Anambra State that would serve as a guide to becoming self-employed. Most young adults in Anambra State lack information on entrepreneurial characteristics to become self-employed. The issues confronting Anambra State as a result of youth unemployment include increase in crime rate, drug abuse, kidnapping, and suicide rate. Guided by the human capital theory, the purpose of this case study was to explore the entrepreneurship strategies that young adults in Anambra State needed to become self-employed after graduating from universities. Twenty youth entrepreneurs participated in the individual interviews, 5 participated in a focus group, and 5 policymakers participated in another individual interview. Data were coded and analyzed using Yin's 5 step procedure involving compiling, assembling, analysing, dissembling and repeating the entire process three times until the themes emerged. The emerging themes were mentorship, vocational training, and ad-hoc programs. These findings revealed that youth who participated in these programs (mentorship, vocational training and ad-hoc) obtained entrepreneurial strategies and consequently ran more profitable enterprises than those who did not. The implications for positive social change include recommendations to policymakers to expand the mentoring program among young adults and introduce vocational education that could enhance employment rate, thereby improving the standard of living, and create educational programs for university students with the expectation that upon graduation they may be able to develop businesses that may lead to the creation of employment and empower young entrepreneurs towards national growth and development.

The education is one of the most important subject of these days for our society. At the international level, it is about competitiveness. The countries are fight for sales markets, for investments and for attracting investors. We analyze the most important indicators on the tertiary education system: the total number of students, the total number of graduates, the total number of teaching staff, the total number of graduates by sex and by fields of education. We realize an econometric model between the total number of students, GDP from education and health and the total number of teaching staff from tertiary education. We recommended some measures for development of education system.

Global competitiveness, outsourcing, and increased production of overseas engineers are issues that are becoming increasingly relevant in undergraduate engineering education and have prompted a number of calls to protect U.S. global competitiveness. Recent examples of such works include: Educating the Engineer of 2020 [1], Rising Above the Gathering Storm [2], and The World is Flat [3]. All these reports have challenged engineering institutions to increase the production and improve the education of engineering graduates. This is an increasingly important concern because, with the rapid pace of technological change, the future engineer is not only expected to offer technical ingenuity but also adapt to a continuously evolving environment while simultaneously being able to operate outside the narrow limits of one discipline in solving the complex problems of the future.

Global competencies of engineering graduates have been identified as traits that are increasingly necessary for professional competitiveness of graduates, but continue to be elusive and difficult to address in the engineering curricula. Study abroad and experiential learning programs have been invoked to address some of the global competencies with varied degrees of success. In this paper, a faculty-led program model developed by West Virginia University and several institutions in Mexico and the US is presented, in which senior engineering students from the US and Mexico team up to conduct meaningful engineering projects in industry in Mexico. Intermixed teams of students are formed and placed in various industrial sites to work full time under the advice of engineering practitioners and faculty members from both Mexico and USA. Global competencies are addressed in the context of a project that requires students to work with peers of similar disciplines and level across language and cultural barriers.

The growth of competitiveness of university graduates in the labor market is growing due to the development of soft skills. The purpose of this article was to identify the most rational form of practical training for the development of soft skills among students. The paper used an analysis of the effectiveness of the application of the author’s methodology for conducting a business game. The empirical basis was the results of a sociological survey of students based on the results of practical exercises in the form of the business game “Search for Truth”. The opinion poll was attended by 487 students from 39 study groups. As a result, it was found that this form allows students to increase the development efficiency of creativity, the ability to go out to innovative knowledge, communication skills, the ability to work in a team, fairly evaluate their colleagues, leadership qualities, and stress resistance. The growth of excitement in achieving victory, a sense of responsibility for collective actions as part of multilingual and multicultural groups is revealed. Ways of neutralizing negative phenomena during and after classes are proposed. The study showed that the business game contributes to the development of soft skills among students.

The need for energy efficiency captured the attention of all sectors of our society in the 1970s when energy supplies dwindled and prices increased. Interest in energy efficiency continued during the 1980s primarily due to environmental concerns and secondarily because of economic and industrial competitiveness issues. Energy supply disruptions caused by hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and recent hikes in energy prices have generated a renewed interest in energy efficiency. An example of this renewed interest is that the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) initiated, developed, and implemented a national campaign to save energy now in 2006. In the past, the industrial sector has responded to energy shortages and its price increases with varying effectiveness, but small and medium-sized plants generally lacked the resources to cope effectively. One of the U. S. government’s responses to this situation was to offer these small and medium-sized plants technical assistance such as Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) program. One such center was established at Bradley University in 1993. Since its inception, the Bradley University Industrial Assessment Center (BU IAC) has functioned very successfully. Periodically BU IAC has been doing an in-house critical review of its performance and effectiveness. These reviews included outcomes such as total assessment recommendations, (ARs); diversity of ARs; quantifications of identified opportunities to save energy, minimize waste, and enhance productivity; implementation rates analysis; and impacts on energy engineering education. The purpose of this paper is to describe the impacts of the Industrial Assessment Center program on energy engineering education. The impacts on employment, salaries, and job performance of BU IAC graduates are discussed in this paper. The impacts of the BU IAC in improving the quality of in-class instruction by its Director(s) are explained in this paper.

The professional engineer of the 21st century must have a holistic view of his/her world, and recognize that continuing education is vital for maintenance of professional competitiveness.. Engineering education has generally responded to workforce technology needs which have traditionally changed rather slowly. Today’s professional engineer must be prepared to meet the challenges of an increasingly complex physical, legal, technical, and social climate with which he/she is confronted. Accordingly, today’s engineering education system is structured to prepare graduates for life-long learning, by placing greater emphasis on the learning process. In the 21st century, workforce technology and demands are changing at an extremely rapid pace, and in order to remain current, the modern engineering professional must adapt to those rapid changes. Within this environment, expertise in a single discipline or technology is no longer considered adequate for the professional engineer, since he/she must be comfortable working in multi-disciplinary teams, be capable of integrating a broad range of knowledge, and working across intellectual boundaries. The modern engineer must understand the global marketplace and its working environment, and in so doing develop an international perspective, and be prepared for participation in international projects. He/she must appreciate the issues relating to sustainability, and design accordingly to address the concerns. The engineer is expected to maintain a broad perspective, and be prepared to adjust to the rapid, dynamic changes which are encountered. This paper identifies some of the reasons for the pursuit of continuing education, and reviews options which are available to the practicing engineer in Florida, with particular emphasis on opportunities offered by the University of Florida. To consider the characteristics of the levels of formation of professional readiness of future specialists to pedagogical diagnostics of quality of education. Diagnostics of levels of formation of professional training of future teachers is realized through a number of research methods: observation, testing, interview, analysis of the results. The basis of the diagnostic systems research on three-level assessment scale, supplemented by «high level», which allows to adapt to local conditions and to enrich the features of a particular region. Analysis of modern works on the organization of control of educational achievements of students; the log books of progress and attendance of students in classes, conversations with teachers and our own observations have proved that in educational practice there are different models of the organization of control of educational achievements of students in pedagogical disciplines and professional subject training, validation should be carried out using various schemes and scales of evaluation present different approaches to the calculation of rating of students (in some cases even within the same University) and others. The analysis proved that the existing complex control tasks and tasks for independent work is only seventy percent of jobs differentiated by professional orientation, the rest of the job for the overall development of pedagogical competence of students. In our opinion, well developed task, that is, those that consist mainly of problems of professional and pedagogical orientation that enhance future teachers ‘ motivation to learn pedagogical disciplines. The quality of education becomes the main reference point that determines the credibility and competitiveness of educational institutions on regional, national level and international arena.

After analysis of scientific literature, we defined that concept of “augmented reality” has following synonyms: “advanced reality”, “improved reality”, “enriched reality”, “mixed reality” and “hybrid reality”. Analysis of scientific literature and own practical experience of the use of augmented reality technologies application in educational practices allowed to state next: augmented reality technologies have a great potential for application in education; there are some cases of augmented reality use for school education; positive aspects of augmented reality technologies application in higher education institutions are confirmed by experiments (isolated cases); only few universities in Ukraine apply augmented reality technologies to educate students; only few universities in Ukraine have special subjects or modules in schedule to teach students to develop augmented reality technologies; various scientific events, mass events, competitions are held in Ukraine, and specialized training on the augmentation of augmented reality technologies is carried out, but this is non-systematic and does not have special state orientation and support. Features of introduction of virtual and augmented reality technologies at Sumy State University (Ukraine) are identified: “e-learning ecosystems” was created; in 2019, augmented and virtual reality research laboratory was established. Advantages and disadvantages of project activity in education are described: project activity is one of the most important components of educational process; it promotes creative self-development and self-realization of project implementers and forms various life competencies. It is determined that augmented reality application for implementation of educational projects will help: to increase students’ interest for educational material; formation of new competences; increase of students’ motivation for independent educational and cognitive activity; activation of educational activities; formation of positive motivation for personal and professional growth; conditions creation for development of personal qualities (creativity, teamwork, etc.). Current trends in implementation of educational projects were identified: most of the winner projects were implemented using augmented reality technology; augmented reality technologies were used in projects to teach different disciplines in higher education institutions. Augmented reality technology application for project activity has positive impact on learning outcomes and competitiveness of the national workforce; it will enhance the country’s position in the global economic space.

This master thesis explores the challenges for waste management business models in the field of textiles regarding the requirements of the circular economy, as well as improvement potentials in the current framework conditions. It is concerned with the research question: "Is it advisable to change the frame-work conditions at meso or macro level, with regard to business models for waste management companies in the textile sector that are oriented towards the requirements of the circular economy, and - if so - in what way?” The approach of the study is based on the delta analysis of the e Society for Institutional Analysis at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. It compares the target state of the normative requirements with the actual state of the textile and waste management framework conditions and attempts to identify the gaps (the delta). Based on the delta, it develops approaches that are intended to help reduce the gaps. The thesis develops three business models for the target year 2025 in different areas: an exchange platform for sorters, recyclers and designers, an automatic sorting plant and a plant for fibre-to-fibre recycling of mixed materials. It is becoming clear that these business models cannot meet the target requirements for the circular economy. The analysis identifies the remaining gaps in the framework conditions as the main problem. For example, insufficient innovation impulses and the lack of competitiveness of secondary raw materials inhibit the actors from applying and using new technologies and business models. Restricted access to knowledge and information, as well as a lack of transparency between the actors, also prove to be problematic. In order to answer the research question, the study recommends altering the framework conditions at meso and macro level. It proposes a platform for cooperation between designers, the introduction of a material declaration system and an eco-design guideline for textiles as possible development options. In addition, this work offers a matrix of criteria to help the actors test and improve their new waste management business models regarding their suitability for the circular economy. The analysis is carried out from an outsider's perspective on the entire textile industry. It therefore cannot cover and deal with all aspects and individual circumstances of each player in detail. The necessary changes in the framework conditions that have been identified can therefore be used as a basis for further investigations.
