Ideation, research, and technological innovation are valuable when they lead to wealth creation. Commercialization is a way to tie science to economics and create wealth from innovation. Success in technology development and commercialization requires a combination of several factors, including creative thinking, appropriate technical knowledge, entrepreneurial thinking and spirit, and financial resources. But it is rare for a single person to have all of these characteristics. Therefore, the best way to successfully commercialize technology is to create a team of four different personalities with the above characteristics: These four personalities are inventor/innovator, investor, technology, and entrepreneur. This article examines the definitions and concepts of commercialization and points to social and economic factors in the commercialization process - from ideation to the development of success and growth. Then proposed the formation of an innovation team as one of the strategies for commercialization success and expresses the characteristics of the innovation team and its members and their role in different stages of commercialization. Finally, to achieve more and better achievements in the field of commercialization, suggestions are presented according to the existing conditions.

Introduction. The actuality of scientific research is confirmed by the fact that innovative activity is one of the key factors for straightening national competitiveness under the conditions of globalization. It is thanks to innovations that the business entity has the ability to develop its market positions, improve its economic efficiency and in turn create a bigger added value. At the same time, it is important to commercialize the results of the innovation activity are as much as possible, which aims at offering new high-tech products and services for the market. The effectiveness of its successful implementation enables innovation’s introduction on the market, as well as the achievement of its sustainable competitive advantages. That is why the problem of commercialization of innovative products should be seen by society, government, private business, scientists, because the solution of this problem lays in the competitiveness of goods and effects human life standards. The purpose of the work is to highlight the problems that arise during the innovative products’ commercialization and to offer solutions to them. Results. Based on the review and synthesis of literary sources, as well as the study of empirical data from domestic enterprises the key problems of high-tech products commercialization were identified, they include the following: the danger of premature diffusion of high-tech products, which is uncontrollable by the commercialization subjects; inaccuracy during the assessment of demand for high-tech products and forecasting their sales volume; the adequate choice strategy complexity and development of tactics for the promotion of high-tech products in the market; the lack of reasonable pricing approaches for high-tech products. Conclusion. The article presents the key problems of innovative products’ commercialization and their solutions. The main directions for solving these problems were developed. In order to ensure both process of innovative products’ commercialization and innovative activity in general we propose number of recommendations in order to form an extensive information base for employees of the management subsystem and business analysts.

Introduction. In modern highly competitive, dynamic and unstable conditions enterprises are able to function successfully in the marketplace and occupy leadership positions in large part due to developing, implementation and realisation of innovations. A high level of an innovative activity of enterprises creates preconditions for forming new competitive benefits, an increase of investment attractiveness, broadens possibilities of passage to new marketplaces, is an impulse for providing a progressive development. As practice shows, only a small part of innovations transforms in goods and services and is successfully commercialized due to its promotion in interested groups of consumers. That's why the problem of commercialization of innovative goods and services should be in field of view of society, government, private business, scientists because decision of this problem improves a competitive ability of goods and finely a level of population's life. The purpose of paper is an exploration of commercialization properties of innovative goods and services in foreign countries, detection of reasons of low level of commercialization of innovative goods and services by domestic enterprises. Results. It is considered a domestic and a worldwide experience of commercialization of high-tech goods and services of industrial enterprises in the context of Asian, American and European models of innovative development. It is particularly set that there in the USA, Europe and Asia the key role in development and implementation of high-tech goods and services play multinational companies, which quite often create venture companies in their structures. Besides, it is set that a venture capital is often concentrated in science parks, technopoles, business incubators and other innovative structures. It is proved that in the process of commercialization of high-tech goods and services is a governmental support of state, first of all, from positions of longevity of preferences, which are offered to subjects of innovative structures. It's also set that such kind of commercialization is successful when local properties of demand for new goods and services are taken into account. Regarding a domestic experience of commercialization of innovative goods and services, they should state that it has a quite low development. Conclusion. In this way, generalisation of domestic and foreign experience of commercialization of innovative goods and services shows that directions and ways of such commercialization are different and can have a different shape that is defined by local historical circumstances, traditions and national innovative politics in general.

Topicality. The modern economy of the developed world powers is oriented on creation of conditions of favorable innovative type of development, attraction and use of innovations in economic activity, one of the main components of regulation of innovative activity of any country is the market of innovations. Aim and tasks. The purpose of the article is to study the current state and components of the market for innovative goods in Ukraine and their impact on the economy of the state. Research results. The main stages of the innovation process and their connection with the market system are considered in the article; the concept and components of the market for innovative goods are defined; the main indicators of innovation activity of Ukrainian enterprises are analyzed. The structure of the basic elements of the market of innovative goods is proposed and the main problems of formation and development of the market of innovations in the country are revealed. Conclusion. The formation of an innovation market is a complex, contradictory process, as an underdeveloped innovation market has a devastating effect on the competitiveness of innovation structures, the reduction of innovation activity and the efficiency of entrepreneurial activity. The development of the innovation market, on the one hand, seeks the entrepreneur to innovate, and on the other - creates fierce competition, technological unemployment, not always the ability to control the level of prices for innovative products, new problems of ecology, ergonomics, security, etc. The functioning and development of the market for innovative goods in Ukraine requires the formation of infrastructure of the market of innovations, increase the demand of industrial enterprises and business for the results of intellectual labor and research and development, and build a system of interconnection between educational institutions, science, scientific, technical, experimental and design activities and representatives of the real economy sector, in the future will increase the innovation activity of Ukrainian enterprises. Little attention is paid to the development and financing of science in the country; functioning of highly competitive development of the market of intellectual and innovative products requires interrelation between business and the state; it is necessary to create a favorable economic, legal and information environment for the development of an innovative market; it is necessary to support the development of innovative entrepreneurship by the state; it is necessary to improve the system of commercialization of the results of intellectual activity at all stages of the innovation process.

The research products produced by tertiary institutions are intellectual property that benefits the community and provide an economic contribution. Even Universities are encouraged to increase their research products’ economic value because innovation considers successful when commercialized. Higher Education is direct to produce innovative products with high added value so that these products can be beneficial to the community and commercialized. However, not all innovation results are successful or can be commercialized, although, in principles, the commercialization of research products is no different from standard products’ commercialization. This paper outlines various efforts undertaken by universities/polytechnics in Indonesia to increase research output commercialization. The purpose of interviews is to determine how universities respond to the challenges of expanding the commercialization of their research output. The participants were the heads of research institutes and community service from twenty-one (21) tertiary institutions in Indonesia, consisting of nine (9) universities and twelve (12) polytechnics. The finding shows that only a few university and polytechnic have commercialized their research products; however, most higher education keeps doing their best to increase their capability to commercialize their research products. This study’s two implications are: 1) researchers need to involve “user” needs before developing a research proposal. 2) Management at the university needs to facilitate the commercialization of the academicians’ research products.

The problems of commercialization of science-intensive products in international markets are identified. The aim is to study the current state of the high-tech sector of Ukraine's economy and to analyze innovative technologies and scientific and technological progress in the period of globalization. The expediency of taking into account and ensuring the competitiveness of the state economy in the conditions of Industry 4.0 is revealed. It is noted about the expediency of effectively realizing the export potential for high-tech products. A critical analysis of a number of agreements at the intergovernmental level on cooperation in science and technology is presented. Innovative activity in the period of globalization is analyzed. The problems that have become a threat to the further development of Ukraine's economy are outlined. The need to attract foreign direct investment in order to overcome economic problems is substantiated.

The identification of the nature of intellectual entrepreneurship in institutions of higher education has enabled to justify its specific principles, map the key problems of intellectual entrepreneurship development in Ukrainian universities and outline the pathways to their solution. The paper offers a concept of innovative entrepreneurship in institutions of higher education based on commercialization of intellectual activity results (IAR) viewed as a separate type of activity aimed at creation and realization of the commercial potential of university R&D results which relies on its own principles and is ensured through specific instruments within the University's infrastructure and is implemented in unique organizational forms. To ensure the implementation of the suggested organizational and economic mechanism, the content, principles and objectives of infrastructural support for commercialization of intellectual activity results in institutions of higher education have been developed. The heart of the organizational model for commercialization of IAR in institutions of higher education is an engineering centre. A multi-project mechanism for managing the commercialization of IAR in institutions of higher education has also been proposed, the core of which is a permanent project office operating within the engineering centre with engaged cross-functional teams on commercialization and respective project organizational structures to promote the entry of innovative products based on advanced developments of institutions of higher education into the market. The use of the developed assessment criteria for evaluating the innovation and commercial potentials of intellectual activity results facilitates a reasonable selection of intellectual activity results for commercialization (subject to their innovative and commercial potential assessment) along with providing an objective comparison of IAR and innovative products by various criteria combinations to set the priorities and make rational decisions in the area of financing and resourcing which enhances the overall efficiency of innovation activities and intellectual entrepreneurship performance in institutions of higher education.

This work presents the development of a new framework for the commercialization of innovative products in the residential construction industry. It is the aim of this work to identify commercialization decisions, actions, risks, barriers and accelerators specific to the residential construction industry market that will increase the acceptance of product innovations for those developing them. Commercialization is broadly defined as the process of developing a business enterprise from an idea, through feasibility and implementation, to its acceptance into a market (USDOE 1999, Goldsmith 2003). Commercialization frameworks describe the concurrent decisions and actions along the innovation development process, optimizing all of the technical and business decisions required for a successful introduction to the marketplace. Successful commercialization frameworks serve as a form of development plan, promoting solutions to questions and problems that arise along the development path. This research derives such a framework for the commercialization of innovative products and makes it specific to residential construction through the following tasks: 1. Understanding standard terminology: defining innovation and commercialization as they relate to this work. 2. Creating a lens for the unique nature of commercialization in this industry: deriving a commercialization framework (matrix) from the research literature in business, construction, and concurrent engineering, capable of accepting later alterations. 3. Understanding the manufacturer's role and risks: conducting case study interviews for fifteen innovative residential construction products that specify important tasks, risks and benefits for commercialization. 4. Understanding the role, risks and benefits of builders, as users of innovation: comparing case studies and workshop surveys of many residential construction industry players that focus on the builder to establish parameters for the innovation commercialization matrix. 5. Linking both manufacturer and builder: comparing manufacturer commercialization best-practices with builder adoption patterns for innovative products over time.

Throughout the world, innovation is viewed as a critical factor in the future health of the construction industry. There is universal interest in successful commercialization of innovative construction products. This thesis focuses on the US construction industry's ability to successfully commercialize innovative products. US small, limited-resource innovators will be key players in this success. Recent failures of entrepreneurial business ventures in the commercialization of such products would benefit from a unique model for construction industry commercialization. The general approach is through an identification of accelerators for previously commercialized products, which are incorporated into a generic commercialization model. This process consists of five stages that are presented in this work: defining commercialization and innovation through literature for the residential construction industry; reviewing literature from other-industry commercialization models; establishing a new generic model (or framework) for innovative construction products from such literature; capturing qualitative and quantitative construction data from industry experts regarding actions that facilitate commercialization; populating specific cells of the generic model deemed relevant through this industry data, resulting in the accumulation of important cells, actions, and sequences. This work uses industry cases to present challenges specific to the construction industry and its products. It is limited to five such cases and their important data for residential construction innovation commercialization success.

Однією зі складових розвитку підприємницької діяльності є інновації. При цьому комерціалізація результатів інноваційної діяльності дозволяє одним підприємствам збільшити рівень конкурентоспроможності, іншим – оптимізувати свою діяльність залежно від того, вони виробляють і реалізують чи споживають об’єкти комерціалізації. При цьому з метою максимізації ефективності та результативності інноваційної діяльності підприємства процес комерціалізації має бути чітким, послідовним і структурованим.
Одной из составляющих развития предпринимательской деятельности являются инновации. При этом коммерциализация результатов инновационной деятельности позволяет одним предприятиям увеличить уровень конкурентоспособности, другим - оптимизировать свою деятельность в зависимости от того, они производят и реализуют или потребляют объекты коммерциализации. При этом с целью максимизации эффективности и результативности инновационной деятельности предприятия процесс коммерциализации должен быть четким, последовательным и структурированным.

This dissertation presents the development of a new framework for international commercialization of innovative structural products in residential construction. Development of his framework required the examination of six subjects related to international commercialization. 1) commercialization models previously developed, locally and internationally, 2) barriers to the process, 3) stakeholders, actions, and decisions critical to the process, 4) characteristics of innovations that are suitable for international use, 5) characteristics of foreign markets that are ideal to adopt such innovations, and 6) strategies to overcome barriers The framework development was based on one structural product, SIPs. This product has been successfully developed and implemented in the United States and is being considered for commercial use in Saudi Arabia. Structural product clusters are particularly appropriate because of their innovative nature and their major influence on the structure of residential buildings. The study relies on sequential explanatory mixed-method research design, consisting of two distinct phases (Creswell 2003), to gain insight into processes surrounding commercialization. The rationale for this approach is that quantitative data and its results provide a general picture of the barriers to international commercialization in the available sample, which can mapped onto an initial framework. The qualitative data and its analysis help to refine and expand statistical results by exploring participants' actual decision processes that can be also mapped to a second framework. Both data sets can be merged, mapped onto one final framework. Variables related to the six subjects, mentioned above, were distilled from literature into open-ended questionnaires for two groups of key stakeholders in the supply chain of innovative structural products: 1) SIPs stakeholders in the US and 2) stakeholders of innovative structural products in Saudi Arabia. The primary purpose of the open-ended questionnaires was to ensure usage of correct terminology used in this study and to encourage full, meaningful answers—capturing all possible factors affecting the process of international commercialization. The author collected responses using web-based surveys. The results yielded the development of a reliable instrument to be implemented in further steps of this research. Next, the researcher collected variables related to the questions from previous open-ended questionnaires into closed-ended questionnaires to collect the data (on perceived barriers to international commercialization), using web-based surveys, and performed a preliminary analysis of the data using frequency analysis. This process yielded market-based strategies for developing an initial framework for international commercialization in residential construction. Subsequently, a focused examination of barriers to international commercialization was needed. The researcher collected such data through an applied understanding of the specific development processes for SIPs to be introduced to a new, international market, namely Saudi Arabia. Based on the model's structure, the researcher conducted six case studies of real stakeholder processes along the supply chain, SIPs development domestically and internationally, and tracked data for real risks of the commercialization process. Findings suggested perceived versus actual risks and barriers to the commercialization process for an integral product to the residential construction process. This was an important distinction because of proposed development methods and the application of market diffusion. Based on the barriers identified, the researcher developed market-based strategies to be incorporated into a second framework. This framework along with the initial framework and the literature-based framework have been triangulated to develop one final framework. The final framework was then introduced to a few experts in the industry to increase its validity.

The thesis aims to identify the strategic points and the steps that must be observed to ensure that the new product introduced to the market will be successful. In the text some general background to innovating is discussed, the process of product development ending with introduction to a market. In the applied section the market situation is outlined and the position of Vitana is determined. There are two products thoroughly analyzed -- with diametrically opposed success. For this purpose an analogy to the theoretical part followed by the instruments of the marketing mix is proceeding. For both products, the processes of launch are described in detail and the steps which brought about or hindered the desired result are identified. In conclusion it is defined whether in this case the typical causes of failure in innovation apply.

Отже, управління ланцюгами поставок є складним процесом і включає такі елементи, як координація, орієнтація потоку (матеріальна, фінансова, інформаційна), інтеграція, партнерство, ефективність, орієнтація на споживача, створення вартості, ефективність роботи, зниження витрат, стійкість, екологічність.
Сегодня усиливается важность цепочек поставок. На мировом уровне все больше предприятий понимают, что невозможно эффективно функционировать без налаженных связей. Цепочки поставок сложны и целостны. Итак, управление цепочкой поставок - сложный процесс и включает в себя такие элементы, как координация, ориентация потока (материальный, финансовый, информационный), интеграция, партнерство, производительность, ориентация на клиента, создание ценности, эффективность работы, снижение затрат, устойчивость, экологичность.
The importance of the supply chains arises today. At the world level, more and more enterprises understand that it is impossible to function effectively without well-established links. Supply chains are complex and integrity. So, supply chain management is a difficult process and includes such elements as coordination, flow orientation (material, financial, informational), integration, partnership, performance, customer orientation, value creation, operation efficiency, cost reduction, sustainability, environmental friendliness.

AbstractThis chapter provides an overview of the regulatory framework for aquaponics and the perspectives for European Union (EU) policy. Using Germany as an example, we analyze the specific regulations concerning construction and operation of aquaponic facilities and the commercialization of aquaponic products. We then show how aquaponics fits in with different EU policies and how it might contribute to EU sustainability goals. In the end, we provide some recommendations on how institutional conditions could be improved for aquaponics as an emerging technological innovation system.

This paper describes an ongoing applied research project directed at producing a marketable viscoelastic structural damper system designed to protect buildings from seismic and wind events. The project is a collaborative effort involving Penn State Erie, Lehigh University, and Corry Rubber Corporation. This paper provides details of the damper realization steps which include product conceptual design and evolution, prototype manufacture and test results, application testing and evaluation plans, and the results of initial product market and commercialization studies. The collaborative efforts of this project demonstrate how the applied research capabilities of a mechanical engineering technology program can complement the pure research capabilities of a leading institution in their field.

This paper describes the model used by the Department of Rehabilitation Science and Technology (RST) at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) to teach the fundamentals of design using the development of assistive technology as the design objective. Our program, Technology Innovations for People with Disabilities (TIPeD), creates an ecosystem around design through the conceptualization, development, and commercialization of products. Through two classes, a fabrication lab (FabLab), and programs for both traditional (undergraduate and graduate students) and non-traditional (teachers and veterans) trainees, we facilitate experiential learning activities to convey design and product innovation principles. Undergraduate and graduate students progress through formal learning activities to be able to serve as mentors for our non-traditional trainees who are preparing for one of two pathways. Military veterans in our Experiential Learning for Veterans in Assistive Technology and Engineering (ELeVATE) program use our design and product innovation activities as a mechanism to get excited about and prepare for a transition in to formal education in engineering and technology. Teachers in our Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program use our activities as a mechanism to learn about engineering and design to create high school science and math curricular units to excite their students about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers. Though the purpose of this paper is to present and describe this program model, we chose to include both formative and summative evaluation procedures, in addition to preliminary results, to help demonstrate our efforts for continuous improvement of the program.

Research goal: discover the importance of the innovation process in the context of education - science and production. Research tasks: describe the theoretical elements of the innovation process in relation to the Belarusian experience; to develop a model of innovation implementation science - education – production. Research methods: methods of situation description and process systematics were used in the research; statistical and modelling method of data. The most important competitive advantage of industrial enterprises, especially in the current situation - the coronavirus crisis, are innovations formed in the product concept, technological vector, management tactics and the general strategy of the organization. To bring an idea to the market requires its detailed feasibility study, testing, commercialization, scaling, and re-innovation. Successfully passed the stages of approbation and implementation of new innovations create a basic complex of competitive advantages of the industry, and its new orts of development. The role of scientific and educational potential, the introduction of a cooperative model of resource use to achieve economic and social effect has been determined. The paper proposes a toolkit for assessing the effectiveness of a neo-industrialization strategy in the direction of enhancing the innovative activity of industrial business entities, analysing the calculated results, including using the proposed visualization toolkit. Types of neo-industrialization strategies with a set of key components of the impact on the level of development of the sector are presented. Research innovation: a stage model for the introduction of useful innovations from science - education to production has been developed.

Laser shock peening (LSP) is an innovative surface treatment developed to improve surface integrity. The primary purpose of LSP in the literature is to impart compressive residual stresses below the surface of a material. This study explores the feasibility using LSP to direct-write surface micro dents for lubricant retention. Micro dents have been successfully fabricated on the aluminum 6061-T6 surfaces. LSP is a highly transient process with a pulse duration of 10 – 100 ns. As a consequence, the real time in-situ measurements of laser/material interaction is challenging. Therefore, FEA simulations of LSP were performed via 3D spatial and temporal shock pressure using user material and load subroutines. The results suggested there is an optimal peening time that produces the deepest dent.

Nanotechnology can be applied to various industries and textile industry is one of the foremost industries benefited. Starting 1997, textile industry pioneers with foresight already using the nanometer particles to coat on yarns, fibre and fabric to give innovation to the industry. There was estimation that in 2007, the market for the nanometer particles application, electronic textiles and wearable electronics had reached US$13.6 billion and projected to hit US$115 billion in 2012 (1). Despite this great potential, the textile industries find themselves like swimming in the big ocean when applying nanotechnology to their products. Consumers are hesitated to accept the nano-treated garments as they have little knowledge when comes to nanotechnology. A poll was taken out in August, 2007 showed that in United States, many Americans know little to nothing about nanotechnology. Only 6% of Americans have “heard a lot” about nanotechnology and 42% have heard “nothing at all” (2, 3).

The techno-economic analysis outcomes of bioenergy production compared with traditional energy indicate that the existing production technologies are not promising, however environmental analyses demonstrate that bioenergy products support cross-cutting sustainability and strategic analysis efforts. Therefore, utilization of bio-products, such as bio-oil and biofuels, is expected to increase in the near future due to environmental pressures. The overarching goal is to balance the primary dimensions of sustainability using both distributed and centralized conversion technologies. To this end, this research proposes a conceptual decision making framework to examine biomass-derived energy production system infrastructures and process-level operations. This framework encompasses three phases (i.e., 5-ton study, 50-ton study, and 500-ton study), using techno-economic, financial risks, cross-cutting assessments to scale-up bioenergy production, foster technology commercialization, and enhance sustainability benefits. The motivation behind the proposed framework lies in inherent limitations of the existing bioenergy conversion technologies and production systems. As an application of this research, a sustainable bioenergy economy fueled by innovative conversion technologies is examined in the state of Georgia to produce (at least one billion gasoline gallon equivalent) hydrocarbon biofuels from underutilized feedstocks (e.g., terrestrial and algae). The outcomes can address national priorities: promote energy security and reduce dependence on imported oil, promote the use of diverse domestic and clean energy resources, establish advanced bioindustries and rural economies, and mitigate environmental impacts from fossil fuel production and consumption.

Abstract This paper discusses a new approach to teaching a senior-level mechanical systems design course at the University of Rhode Island. The MCE401 class was split into 9 teams, each with four students. Team members were selected to complement their learning styles. To each team, additional 4 students from the URI Business school were added. In the Fall semester, each team selected one of several different, product-oriented design projects or proposed their own project topic subject to certain requirements. The students were asked to perform a patent search, to critique related products, to prepare a marketing study, to propose a design of this product, and to realize their design using a 3-D solid-modeling software. At the end of the Fall semester, groups competed for funding for activities in the following Spring term that included building prototypes of their design, formulating business plans for commercialization, and applying for patent protection. The new proposed format gave students better understanding and exposure to the entrepreneurial process of product design and innovation.

Innovation is per se based not only on the individual problem solving, but the process from new ideas to commercialization of new products. However, in a time with rapid technology shifts and frequently altered customer requirements, creativity and more precisely the lack of useful new ideas surfacing is viewed as problematic by companies. Ways of involving creativity has been to apply idea generating (IG) methods for identification of creativity sources. This paper consists of a combined theoretical and empirical approach which aims at studying existing tests and proposing suitable creative methods to be used in higher engineering education. The authors work with an extensive capstone design course in Integrated Product Development that emphasizes systematic and parallel approaches to product development. In contrast to traditional modes and styles of teaching that make few attempts to encourage students to pursue a variety of IG methods the capstone design course in integrated product development puts a large part of the responsibility on the students. In all cases IG and use of creativity methods is a natural ingredient. Thus, students’ self-regulation and insights into how to work with methods and exercises is particularly interesting as this may have an affect on managing their creative skill. Overall possible improvements in students’ creative potential transcend interesting notions on capability to innovate. Thus, this paper’s purpose is to investigate whether creativity as an ingredient of a student’s innovation capability is influenced by using IG methods. And whether the selections made by project groups are aligned to best utilize students’ creative thinking.

The overall theme of this project was to increase the speed of analysis for monitoring pesticide residues in food. Traditionally, analytical methods for multiple pesticides are time-consuming, expensive, laborious, wasteful, and ineffective to meet critical needs related to food safety. Faster and better methods were needed to provide more cost-effective detection of chemical contaminants, and thus provide a variety of benefits to agriculture. This overarching goal to speed and improve pesticide analysis was successfully accomplished even beyond what was originally proposed by the investigators in 1998. At that time, the main objectives of this project were: 1) to further develop a direct sample introduction (DSI) device that enables fast sampling and introduction of blended-only agricultural products for analysis by gas chromatography (GC); 2) to evaluate, establish, and further develop the method of simultaneous pulsed flame photometric detector (PFPD) and mass spectrometry (MS) detection for enhanced pesticide identification capabilities; and 3) to develop a new and novel MS pesticide analysis method, based on the use of supersonic molecular beams (SMB) for sampling and ionization. The first and third objectives were successfully accomplished as proposed, and the feasibility of the second objective was already demonstrated. The capabilities of the GC/SMB-MS approach alone were so useful for pesticide analysis that the simultaneous use of a PFPD was considered superfluous. Instead, the PFPD was investigated in combination with an electron-capture detector for low-cost, simultaneous analysis of organophosphorus and organochlorine pesticides in fatty foods. Three important, novel research projects not originally described in the proposal were also accomplished: 1) development of the quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) method for pesticides in foods; 2) development and optimization of a method using low-pressure (LP) GC/MS to speed pesticide residue analysis; and 3) innovative application of analyte protectants to improve the GC analysis of important problematic pesticides. All of the accomplishments from this project are expected to have strong impact to the analytical community and implications to agriculture and food safety. For one, an automated DSI approach has become commercially available in combination with GC/MS for the analysis of pesticide residues. Meanwhile, the PFPD has become the selective detector of choice for the analysis of organophosphorus pesticides. Great strides were made in SMB-MS through the manufacture of a prototype "Supersonic GC/MS" instrument, which displayed many advantages over commercial GC/MS instruments. Most notably, the QuEChERS method is already being disseminated to routine monitoring labs and has shown great promise to improve pesticide analytical capabilities and increase lab productivity. The implications of these developments to agriculture will be to increase the percentage of food monitored and the scope of residues detected in the food, which will serve to improve food safety. Developed and developing countries alike will be able to use these methods to lower costs and improve results, thus imported/exported food products will have better quality without affecting price or availability. This will help increase trade between nations and mitigate certain disputes over residue levels in imported foods. The improved enforcement of permissible residue levels provided by these methods will have the effect to promote good agricultural practices among previously obstinate farmers who felt no repercussions from illegal or harmful practices. Furthermore, the methods developed can be used in the field to analyze samples quickly and effectively, or to screen for high levels of dangerous chemicals that may intentionally or accidentally appear in the food supply.

The use of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) in consumer products has expanded rapidly, revealing both innovative improvements over conventional materials, and the potential for novel risks to human health and the environment. As the number of new nano-enabled products and the volume of toxicity data on ENMs continues to grow, regulatory agencies like the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) – a small, independent federal agency responsible for protecting consumers from unreasonable risks associated with product use – will require the ability to screen and group a diverse array of nano-enabled consumer products based on their potential risks to consumers. Such prioritization would allow efficient allocation of limited resources for subsequent testing and evaluation of high-risk products and materials. To enable this grouping and prioritization for further testing, we developed a framework that establishes a prioritization score by evaluating a nano-enabled product's potential hazard and exposure, as well as additional consideration of regulatory importance. We integrate the framework into a pilot version software tool and, using a hypothetical case study, we demonstrate that the tool can effectively rank nano-enabled consumer products and can be adjusted for use by agencies with different priorities. The proposed decision-analytical framework and pilot-version tool presented here could enable a regulatory agency like the CPSC to triage reported safety concerns more effectively and allocate limited resources more efficiently.

Technological innovations in sanitation are poised to address the great need for sanitation improvements in low-income countries. Worldwide, more than 2.4 billion people lack access to improved sanitation facilities. Innovative waste treatment and sanitation technologies aim to incorporate user-centered findings into technology engineering and design. Without a focus on users, even the most innovative technology solutions can encounter significant barriers to adoption. Drawing on a household survey conducted in urban slum communities of Ahmedabad, India, this research brief identifies toilet and sanitation preferences, amenities, and attributes that might promote adoption of improved sanitation technologies among potential user populations. This work uses supplemental insights gained from focus groups and findings from the literature. Based on our research, we offer specific guidance for engineering and design of sanitation products and technologies.
