The aim of the study. Evaluate the results of surgical treatment of wounded with gunshot wounds of the colon. Materials and methods of research. A retrospective analysis of the results of surgical treatment of 32 wounded with gunshot wounds of the colon, who were treated in the Central Medical Center and area of responsibility (II–IV level of medical care) from 2014 to 2017. Damage to the right half of the colon was observed in 12 wounded (37.4 %), the left half — in 17 (53.2 %), the rectum — in 3 (9.4 %). A differentiated approach to surgical treatment of colon injuries of different localization is applied. Results and discussion. The method of multi-stage surgical treatment “Damage Control Surgery” was used in 12.5 % of patients. The most common complications of the injury were adhesive intestinal obstruction in 6.3 % of cases, the formation of intestinal abscesses — in 6.3 %, the development of post-traumatic pneumonia in 25 % of patients. Conclusions. If the tactics of “Damage Control Surgery” are followed, it is possible to improve the results of surgical treatment of colon injuries in severe and extremely severe patients.

Label-free surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) analysis shows tremendous potential for the early diagnosis and screening of colon cancer, owing to the advantage of being noninvasive and sensitive. As a clinical diagnostic tool, however, the reproducibility of analytical methods is a priority. Herein, we successfully fabricated Ag NPs/cellulose nanocrystals/graphene oxide (Ag NPs/CNC/GO) nanocomposite film as a uniform SERS active substrate for label-free SERS analysis of clinical serum. The Ag NPs/CNC/GO suspensions by self-assembling GO into CNC solution through in-situ reduction method. Furthermore, we spin-coated the prepared suspensions on the bacterial cellulose membrane (BCM) to form Ag NPs/CNC/GO nanocomposite film. The nanofilm showed excellent sensitivity (LOD = 30 nM) and uniformity (RSD = 14.2%) for Nile Blue A detection. With a proof-of-concept demonstration for the label-free analysis of serum, the nanofilm combined with the principal component analysis-linear discriminant analysis (PCA-LDA) model can be effectively employed for colon cancer screening. The results showed that our model had an overall prediction accuracy of 84.1% for colon cancer (n = 28) and the normal (n = 28), and the specificity and sensitivity were 89.3% and 71.4%, respectively. This study indicated that label-free serum SERS analysis based on Ag NPs/CNC/GO nanocomposite film combined with machine learning holds promise for the early diagnosis of colon cancer.

Colon-targeting drug delivery systems (CDDSs) are employed to improve the bioavailability of protein and peptide drugs through the oral route. So it is important to prepare the drug carriers for oral CDDS. In this study, the Enzyme-Resistant starch (RS) was studied for use as a vehicle in oral colon-targeting drug delivery. The characteristics of RS powders were investigated by X-ray diffraction, polarizing microscopy, DSC and SEM, and their film were examined by enzymatic digestion test. The results showed that RS could be a promising film-former for pharmaceutical coatings, having good stability to enzymatic digestion. Furthermore, a novel peroral formulation using RS coating and bovine serum albumin as a model drug was studied for colon-specific drug delivery in vitro. Drug release studies have shown that RS coating could delivery the drug to the colon and the release rate in simulated colonic fluids was dependent on the biodegradation of RS and its coatings. It is indicated that the RS coated tablet is a potential system for oral CDDS.

The article analyzes and evaluates the protein damage in the wall of the large intestine during its gunshot bullet injury at different times after the injury with the help of histochemical studies. The extent and depth of local proteolysis in the tissues of the colon wall near the site of resection after a gunshot wound was determined, and an assessment of the adequacy of retreat from the damaged tissues of the colon wall and the prognosis of successful healing of the suture on the colon wall was provided. It is shown that the Red/Blue indicator is integral for assessing the condition of the connective tissue of the injured large intestine. Comparative indicators of the volumes of carboxyl (RED) R/B groups and amino groups (BLUE) in the peripheral areas of the removed fragment of the large intestine depending on the result of intestinal suture are presented. It has been proven that in injured young people, violations of the structure, function and vital activity of the large intestine are less pronounced. The presence of an increase in the number of carboxyl groups in tissue proteins was determined, which is evidenced by the increase in red staining and the morphometrically determined increase in the value of the M. Calvo coefficient. When the state of proteins is normalized and the amino groups are activated, the blue color becomes dominant, and the R/B ratio decreases to 1.0 and below. That is, the Red/Blue indicator is integral to assessing the condition of the connective tissue of the injured intestine. Most likely, the initial state of metabolic disturbance plays an important role in healing, inflammation or suppuration. Conclusions were made about the expediency of conducting a histochemical analysis of the damaged colon for adequate therapy. Keywords: histochemical examination, gunshot wound, colon injury.

Bacterial endocarditis is commonly encountered in clinical practice. Many bacterial species have been implicated; however, Streptococcus gallolyticus species (formerly “bovis”) has driven attention given a historical association with colon cancer. Colonoscopy is recommended in an individual with S. gallolyticus endocarditis or bacteremia to evaluate the possibility of high-grade adenoma or colon cancer. There has been no firm recommendation for prophylactic antibiotics to prevent bacterial endocarditis for patients undergoing endoscopic procedures and postcolonoscopy bacteremia in an individual with an endoscopic procedure indicated for S. gallolyticus bacteremia has not been reported. Studies have been aimed at understanding the association between colon cancer and this bacterial pathogen. There are suggestions that the systemic manifestation of S. gallolyticus, a commensal in the colon premalignant cells, may be further predisposed by patient’s immunocompromised status. We present a case of the 72-year-old man with the newly diagnosed multiple myeloma presented with aortic valve endocarditis and S. gallolyticus bacteremia. Colonoscopy revealed colon cancer and high-grade adenoma; few hours after procedure, he presented with Streptococcus mitis bacteremia. In conclusion, our case realigns association of S. gallolyticus to colon cancer, especially in an individual with altered immunity, and is novel to demonstrate the rare association of two distinct bacteria of Streptococcus species associated with cancer. Preendoscopic antibiotics use, though not standard of care, can be considered in the high-risk individual. Altered immunity can be considered the “missing link” inciting bacteremia in individuals with S. gallolyticus-associated colon cancer.

The paper reviews achievements made in the field of video analytics and computer vision, which enable automatic detection of fires, based on video data. Various algorithms have been implemented in sought for effective fire detection methods using video. As one of these, a color-based fire detection algorithm is being described. However, using only one color model for fi re detection is an inefficient approach. The paper proposes a method for estimating temporal changes in pixel intensity, which is used to retrieve information about fires from fire-like objects in a video image. This method helps to calculate the average intensity value in a sequence of shots. A special software has been developed in the Python programming language using the OpenCV (Open Source Computer Vision Library) library, and the corresponding findings have been gained in view to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Recent fire tests on the Cardington full-scale test frame and observations from real fires have demonstrated the significance of connections in fire, when they can have beneficial effects on the survival time of the structure. The lack of experimental data on the behaviour of steel and composite connections in fire means that this is insufficiently addressed in current design codes and also limits the effective use of numerical models. However, recent experimental tests on small-scale specimens have shown that it is possible to derive accurately the moment-rotation relationships at elevated temperature and have established the principles by which this could be achieved. In order to extend the scope to include further parameters, five series of tests have been carried out in a portable connection furnace at the Building Research Establishment. The test series includes flush and flexible end-plate bare-steel connections, and flexible end-plate composite connections. The testing procedure and the resulting behaviour are described. The fire test temperature profiles across the connections are detailed and the connection failure mechanisms are discussed. From the test results, moment-rotation- temperature curves for different connection types are derived. The degradation of connection characteristics is compared with that of structural steel. The experimental behaviour is also compared with the results obtained from an existing finite element analysis developed to model connection response in fire conditions. The experimentally derived connection characteristics have been incorporated within a parametric study of a typical sub-frame, to study the effect of connection type, end-plate thickness, concrete strength, load ratio, and connection temperature. Analysis is extended to a three-dimensional sub-frame. The patterns of behaviour observed in the connection tests is compared with that of the connections in the large-scale fire tests on the composite building at BRE's Cardington laboratory. Based on knowledge about the behaviour of connections at elevated temperature, a component-based model is developed for the elevated temperature response for flexible end-plate connections, both as bare-steel and composite. This is based on the response of constitutive parts of connection. The model is easy to use, and capable of modelling the entire non-linear range of connection behaviour. The predicted response is compared with that recorded experimentally.

The investigation of the collapse of “7 World Trade” as part of the events of 11 September 2001 in New York City (Gann, 2008) indicated that connections were among the most vulnerable elements of steel-framed or composite buildings, and their characteristics can determine whether such buildings survive in extreme scenarios such as fire. In this case total collapse of the building was triggered by the fracture of beam-to-column connections caused largely by thermal expansion of long-span beams. This emphasized the importance of investigating the complex mechanisms through which forces are transferred from the adjacent parts of a structure to the connections under fire conditions. The Cardington fire tests in 1995-96 (Newman, 2000) provided ample evidence that both shear buckling of beam webs and beam bottom-flange buckling, near to the ends of steel beams, are very prevalent under fire conditions. Both of these phenomena could affect the force distribution at the adjacent column-face connection bolt rows, and therefore the sequence of fracture of components. However, there is a distinct lack of practical research investigating the post-buckling behaviour of beams of Classes 1 and 2 sections adjacent to connections at elevated temperatures. In this PhD thesis, the development of analytical models of pure beam-web shear buckling and a combination of both beam-web shear buckling and bottom-flange buckling of beams of Classes 1 and 2 sections are reported. The analytical models are able to predict the post-buckling behaviour of the beam-end buckling panels in the vicinity of beam-column connections at elevated temperatures. A transition criterion, to distinguish between cases in which pure beam-web shear buckling occurs and those in which the instability is a combination of shear buckling and bottom-flange buckling, has been proposed, including a calculation procedure to detect the transition length between these two buckling modes. A component-based buckling element has been created and implemented in the three-dimensional structural fire analysis software Vulcan. The influence of the buckling elements on the bolt row force redistribution of the adjacent connections has been investigated in isolated beams and a simple two-span two-floor frame. It is expected that the buckling element will be involved in more complex performance-based frame analysis for design, and that it will be used with an explicit dynamic procedure to simulate local and progressive collapse of whole buildings.

Fire is a significant threat to the structural integrity of buildings. Depending on the architecture of the structure and the intensity and duration of the fire event, structural members may lose strength and stiffness eventually leading to collapse whether by flexural buckling or crushing. The focus of this research is on the behavior and fire performance of reinforced-concrete columns under fire conditions. In order to effectively study column performance with differing loading, aggregate and dimensional characteristics under varying time-temperature curves and fire exposures, a numerical model was constructed in Microsoft Excel. The spreadsheet model allowed for complete transparency of the calculations and provided a means to visualize the data in flexible ways. ANSYS and several published column furnace tests were used to benchmark the heat transfer and structural analysis portions of the model. One, three and four-sided fire exposures along with the ASTM E119 fire curve and a natural fire curve were used to study latent heating effects, increasing and decreasing eccentricities, moment magnification, and failure modes. Assessments of column structural capacity were performed in accordance with the provisions of ACI 318. The completed model served as an effective tool for the thesis and is available to help aid students and engineers investigate the design of reinforced concrete columns under fire conditions through integration the heat transfer analyses and the structural evaluations.

The subject of the thesis is the optimization of one the key processes in a book company, namely warehouse logistics. This problem consist of two parts; first part focuses on route optimization of completion of customers' orders on daily basis, second part focuses on assigning of storage subsystems and their interconnection. The proposed solution uses a traveller salesman problem implemented into intranet application. Second problem was designed as quadratic assignment problem with use of ex post data analysis. On the basis of achieved results, we presented effective procedures for solving both of aforementioned problems and suggested their implementation into the company's enterprise resource planning system. Hear Color and See Sound - What happens when I combine flamenco guitar and film in a live performance? This master thesis explores the combination of two art forms. The purpose is to use live projections to enhance my guitar composition with movie. My research question is: what happens when I combine flamenco guitar and film in a live performance? I explore if visual qualities add a deeper meaning to my instrumental music by experimenting with color science and video telling/editing techniques. I’ve tested through surveys and live performances if the audience perceive my music differently, by showing contrasting footage or footage that synchronize with my musical compositions. Resulting in an exam concert where I control the prerecorded video compositions with a touch screen interface through the video-jockey software Resolume, while also performing the music (which have been timed for the videos) live together with a flamenco singer and dancer.

AbstractThe late 1950s were chiefly characterised by immense frustration and very difficult relations with the British designers Freeman, Fox and Partners (FFP). A crucial change forced by Bowen and initially resisted by FFP, was to call for competitive bids. Despite the pressure to select a British firm for the construction contract it was awarded to a German firm, Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg (MAN). This dramatically illustrates the extent to which an ex-British colony was now truly independent and capable of making what certainly transpired to be an excellent solution. Abstract Chapter 2 focuses on the colony of Georgia in the 1730s and 1740s. The colony’s financers conceived it as a place cultivated by white laborers, and they prohibited Black slavery in Georgia. Seeing white planters relying heavily on Black laborers in neighboring South Carolina, however, a group of disgruntled settlers insisted on the need for Black laborers because of Georgia’s hot climate. The chapter demonstrates the ways these settlers deliberately constructed this argument even though their claims did not accord with their experience. It shows how a group of self-interested white settlers perpetuated a rhetoric that served as a long-standing justification for Black slavery in hot climates.

Compensation tables (look-up tables, or LUTs) serve as a mapping array between the digital count represented in the image desired and the digital count which is processed into the voltage applied to the CRT cathode in the film recorder.

In working with high resolution (eg. 3000x3000 pixels) digital images, hard copy is often a difficult step. In this laboratory, we use a film recorder which writes a high resolution image raster directly onto Polaroid instant color print film. Since our digital images often represent computed responses from a psychophysical color model, we are concerned that the color in the print be controlled as precisely as possible. This concern has led to the development of a special purpose color computer which resides in the film recorder and transforms the input image pixel values into those output exposure control values necessary to attain the desired color on film. This color transformation is done on the fly without slowing down the printing of the image.

Concrete-encased CFST (concrete filled steel tube) structure is a type of composite structure featuring an inner CFST component and an outer reinforced concrete (RC) component. They are gaining popularity in high-rise buildings and large-span buildings in China nowadays. To date, the behaviour of concrete-encased CFST structures at ambient temperature has been investigated, but their fire performance has seldom been addressed, including the performance in fire and after exposure to fire. This paper summarizes the fire test results of concrete-encased CFST columns and beam-column joints. The cruciform beam-column joint was composed of one continuous concrete-encased CFST column and two cantilevered reinforced concrete (RC) beams. These specimens were subjected to a combined effect of load and full-range fire. The test procedure included four phases, i.e. a loading phase at ambient temperature, a standard fire exposure phase with constant load applied, a sequential cooling phase and a postfire loading phase. The main findings are presented and analysed. Two types of failure were identified, i.e. the failure during fire exposure and the failure during postfire loading. Global buckling failure was observed for all the column specimens. The column specimens with common load ratios achieved high fire ratings without additional fire protection. The concrete-encased CFST columns also retained high postfire residual strength. As for the joint members, beam failure was observed in all cases. The measured temperature-time history and deformation-time history are also presented and discussed. For both the column and joint specimens, the deformation over the cooling phase was significantly greater than that in the standard fire exposure phase.

Objectives: The original objectives of this project were to: Produce juvenile-free pear and apple plants and examine their sensitivity to E. amylovora; Design novel vectors, for antibacterial proteins and promoters expression, combined with the antisense TFL1 gene, and transformation of Spadona pear in Israel and Galaxy apple in USA. The original objectives were revised from the development of novel vectors with antibacterial proteins combined with the TFL-1 due to the inefficiency of alternative markes initially evaluated in pear, phoshomannose-isomerase and 2-deoxyglucose-6-phosphate phosphatase and the lack of development of double selection system. The objectives of project were revised to focus primarily on the development additional juvenile free systems by the use of another pear variety and manipulation of the FT gene under the control of several promoters. Based on the results creation of fire blight resistance pear variety was developed by the use of the juvenile free transgenic plant. Background: Young tree seedlings are unable to initiate reproductive organs and require a long period of shoot maturation, known as juvenile phase. In pear, juvenile period can last 5-7 years and it causes a major delay in breeding programs. We isolated the TFL1 gene from Spadona pear (PcTFL1-1) and produced transgenic ‘Spadona’ trees silencing the PcTFL1 gene using a RNAi approach. Transgenic tissue culture ‘Spadona’ pear flowered in vitro. As expected, the expression of the endogenous PcTFL1 was suppressed in the transgenic line that showed precocious flowering. Transgenic plants were successfully rooted in the greenhouse and most of the plants flowered after only 4-8 months, whereas the non-transformed control plants have flowered only after 5-6 years of development. Major achievements: Prior to flower induction, transgenic TFL1-RNAi ‘Spadona’ plants developed a few branches and leaves. Flower production in the small trees suppressed the development of the vegetative branches, thus resulting in compact flowering trees. Flowering was initiated in terminal buds, as described for the Arabidopsis tfl1 mutant. Propagation of the transgenic TFL1-RNAi ‘Spadona’ was performed by bud grafting on 'Betulifolia' rootstock and resulted in compact flowering trees. The transgenic flowering grafted plants were grown in the greenhouse under a long photoperiod for one year, and flowered continuously. Pollination of the transgenic flowers with ‘Costia‘ pear pollen generated fruits of regular shape with fertile F1 seeds. The F1 transgenic seedling grown in the greenhouse formed shoots and produced terminal flowers only five months after germination. In addition, grafted F1 transgenic buds flower and fruit continuously, generating hybrid fruits with regular shape, color and taste. Several pear varieties were pollinated with the transgenic TFL1-RNAi ‘Spadona’ pollen including `Herald Harw` that was reported to have resistance to fire blight diseases. The F-1 hybrid seedlings currently grow in our greenhouse. We conclude that the juvenile-free transgenic ‘Spadona’ pear enables the development of a fast breeding method in pear that will enable us to generate a resistance pear to fire blight. Implications: The research supported by this grant has demonstrated the use of transgenic juvenile free technology in pear. The use of the juvenile free technology for enhancement of conventional breeding in fruit tree will serve to enhance fast breeding systems in pear and another fruit trees.

The proposed project aims to enhance tree fruit identification and targeting for robotic harvesting through the selection of appropriate sensor technology, sensor fusion, and visual servo-control approaches. These technologies will be applicable for apple, orange and grapefruit harvest, although specific sensor wavelengths may vary. The primary challenges are fruit occlusion, light variability, peel color variation with maturity, range to target, and computational requirements of image processing algorithms. There are four major development tasks in original three-year proposed study. First, spectral characteristics in the VIS/NIR (0.4-1.0 micron) will be used in conjunction with thermal data to provide accurate and robust detection of fruit in the tree canopy. Hyper-spectral image pairs will be combined to provide automatic stereo matching for accurate 3D position. Secondly, VIS/NIR/FIR (0.4-15.0 micron) spectral sensor technology will be evaluated for potential in-field on-the-tree grading of surface defect, maturity and size for selective fruit harvest. Thirdly, new adaptive Lyapunov-basedHBVS (homography-based visual servo) methods to compensate for camera uncertainty, distortion effects, and provide range to target from a single camera will be developed, simulated, and implemented on a camera testbed to prove concept. HBVS methods coupled with imagespace navigation will be implemented to provide robust target tracking. And finally, harvesting test will be conducted on the developed technologies using the University of Florida harvesting manipulator test bed. During the course of the project it was determined that the second objective was overly ambitious for the project period and effort was directed toward the other objectives. The results reflect the synergistic efforts of the three principals. The USA team has focused on citrus based approaches while the Israeli counterpart has focused on apples. The USA team has improved visual servo control through the use of a statistical-based range estimate and homography. The results have been promising as long as the target is visible. In addition, the USA team has developed improved fruit detection algorithms that are robust under light variation and can localize fruit centers for partially occluded fruit. Additionally, algorithms have been developed to fuse thermal and visible spectrum image prior to segmentation in order to evaluate the potential improvements in fruit detection. Lastly, the USA team has developed a multispectral detection approach which demonstrated fruit detection levels above 90% of non-occluded fruit. The Israel team has focused on image registration and statistical based fruit detection with post-segmentation fusion. The results of all programs have shown significant progress with increased levels of fruit detection over prior art.

In order to explore the behavior of cross-shaped steel reinforced concrete (SRC) columns after fire, the heat transfer analysis model and structural analysis model were established by ABAQUS software. The simulation results of the cross-shaped column were compared with the existing test results, in the aspect of the temperature distribution, time-temperature curve, failure mode, and load-displacement relationship after fire exposure. The results show that the simulation results agree well with the experimental results. The influence of critical parameters on residual bearing capacity coefficient k was discussed, which including constant heating duration, maximum heating temperature, concrete strength, yield strength of section steel, yield strength of rebars, limb thickness, effective column length, rebar diameter, and steel content. Finally, a simplified formula was proposed to calculate the residual bearing capacity of cross-shaped SRC columns after fire.

This paper presents experimental and theoretical investigations on progressive collapse behavior of steel framed structures subjected to an extreme load such as fire, blast and impact. A new capacity-based index is proposed to quantify robustness of structures. An energy-based theoretical model is also proposed to quantify the effect of concrete slabs on collapse resistance of structures. The experimental results show that the dynamic amplification factors of frames subject to impact or blast are much less than the conventional value of 2.0. The collapse process of frames in fire can be either static or dynamic depending on the restraint conditions and load levels. It is necessary to account for the failure time and residual strength of blast-exposed columns for assessing the collapse resistance of structures subject to explosion. Two collapse modes of steel frames under blast or impact are found: connection-induced collapse mode and column-induced collapse mode. In case of fire, a frame may collapse due to either column buckling or pulling-in effect of beams. The energy dissipation from elongation of slab reinforcement and additional resultant moment greatly contribute to the collapse resistance of structures.

Accurate temperature readings are vital in fire resistance tests, but conventional thermal imagers often lack sufficient resolution, and applying super-resolution algorithms can disrupt the temperature and color correspondence, leading to limited efficiency. To address these issues, a convolutional network tailored for high-temperature scenes is designed for image super-resolution with the internal joint attention sub-residual blocks (JASRB) efficiently integrating channel, spatial attention mechanisms, and convolutional modules. Furthermore, a segmented method is developed for predicting thermal image temperature using color temperature measurements and an interpretable artificial neural network. This approach predicts temperatures in super-resolution thermal images ranging from 400 to 1200°C. Through comparative validation, it is found that the three-neuron neural network approach demonstrates superior prediction accuracy compared to other machine learning methods. The seamlessly combined proposed super-resolution architecture with the temperature measurement method has a predicted RMSE of 20°C for the whole temperature range with over 85% of samples falling within errors of 30°C.
