In many societies, especially those where individual and collective memory are marked by the trauma that can accompany authoritarian rule, people attempt to come to terms with the past by finding ways of making it relevant to the present. One way to understand this complex relationship with history is through a careful examination of the practice of mourning. Mourning constitutes, above all, a framework from which the deceased's relationship with the living is collectively inventoried, evaluated, and debated so that the social work of memory may graft the experiences of yesterday onto a horizon of expectations. Defining the status of the deceased means making important decisions about how to “move on,” since the moment of mourning is not only a moment for weighing the acts and deeds of the deceased, but also a way of testing more generally the criteria for becoming recognized as an ancestor. As death seems increasingly present in the lives of people in many parts of Africa, emerging forms of social mourning echo the need for new political futures, and mourning shows itself as an important terrain for the social production of meaning. The primary objective of this collection of articles is to look at how the process of mourning mediates between the past and the future, and how the practices and perceptions of mourning are linked to real and imagined divisions in political time. Mourning, in other words, is a way of rethinking time.

Religious Jewish tradition has specific rituals for mourning the loss of a relative. They include receiving visitors during shiva, the recitation of the Kaddish in the first year, and the annual marking of the Yahrzeit. There are also customs for commemorating collective disasters. Foremost among them are the diminution of joy on specific dates, and setting permanent fast days. Towards the end of World War II, when the extent of the destruction became apparent, initiatives began around the world to process the collective mourning and to perpetuate the disaster in religious settings. Many survivors later joined these initiatives, seeking to establish new customs, out of a deep sense that this was an unprecedented calamity. The growing need to combine private and collective mourning stemmed from an awareness of the psychological and cultural power of private mourning customs. Proposals therefore included the observance of a community yahrzeit, a collective Jewish shiva, along with a fast for the ages. This article explores the initiatives undertaken between 1944 and 1951—the time when intensive processing was needed for the survivors and the relatives of those who had perished—discussing their motivations, unique characteristics, successes and failures, and the reasons for them.

This study examines the discursive and semantic patterns underpinning the collective mourning activity on the digital memorial for Aaron Swartz (hacker/software developer/activist). More specifically, it questions if and how online mourning for hacktivists might result in a cultural reconfiguration of cyberspace through the grassroots and collective redefinition of the limits of users’ agency. To this end, all the comments present on Swartz’s digital memorial are collected, coded and, subsequently, analysed to detect their narrative and semantic structures. The results of this linguistic analysis are interpreted through a topological information model. Accordingly, the study discusses (1) the hero-making processes underlying online mourning for hacktivists and (2) the related redefinition of the Internet as the domain of a value-based community of users.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had diverse effects on society worldwide, forcing social scientists to rethink, understand, and address the complexity of the current situation. One thing is certain: the coronavirus is here to stay, and the pandemic has radically transformed social dynamics and social events, regardless of the type of society or the level of development of the countries. COVID-19 has forced all societies to reflect on their priorities and how to achieve human well-being. This implies designing different strategies to overcome the challenges of social development. One of the critical social challenges of COVID-19 is that society as a whole is going through a process called ‘collective mourning,’ as all citizens have lost someone or something-from lives of loved ones to daily routines and ways of life; society is in deep mourning. We are confident that we will overcome this pandemic, thanks to vaccines, but the social effects of COVID-19 will not be resolved with vaccines. The objective of this article is to raise awareness on the importance of using an emerging sociological perspective (neurosociology) to cope with collective mourning so that the state can prepare to provide integrated responses.

AbstractJacques Derrida has written much in recent years on the topic of mourning. This essay takes Derrida's insights into mourning in general and collective mourning in particular in order to ask about the relationship between mourning and politics. Taking a lead from a recent work of Derrida's on Jean-François Lyotard, the essay develops its argument through two examples, one from ancient Greece and one from twentiethcentury America: the role mourning plays in the constitution and maintenance of the state in Plato's Laws and the controversy surrounding the consecration of the tomb of the Unknown Soldier of Vietnam in Arlington National Cemetery. This latter example provides the occasion for questioning the possibilities of mourning the unknown or the unidentifiable and for addressing some of the ways in which the United States has mourned or failed to mourn, remembered or failed to remember, in the wake of September 11.

This article looks to argue that the application of a socially informed trauma theory, as elaborated by Jeffrey C. Alexander et al, would yield invaluable insights into the vicissitudes of early modern society, which underwent a profound collective trauma. This collective trauma was performed on the early modern stage, where the especially gory genre of revenge tragedy served as a work-through channel for this fundamental crisis. Replacing the one-sided concept of mourning, the complex framework of collective trauma allows to account for the hegemonic power relations in the process of the creation of different, contesting trauma narratives. Another crucial aspect of the collective trauma-framework which the paper discusses is that while it acknowledges the loss inherent in fundamental social change, it also allows for the merits of Protestantism in the long run. However, it does not necessarily lead to the idea of disenchantment, as the concept of mourning does.

This essay proposes a re-reading of Giuseppe Dessì’s Il disertore (1961) in the context of collective memory theory and postmodern concerns with mourning and melancholia. Through an examination of the way Dessì represents the interaction between individual memories and official memorialization in the post-WWI period, I argue that Dessì anticipates postmodern perspectives on commemoration. In particular, I look at the protagonist, Mariangela, both as a recuperation of the private and public anti-war activities of many Italian women, and as a melancholic mother whose refusal to obey normative modes of mourning results in a form of resistant mourning. Furthermore, it is precisely through Mariangela’s oppositional gaze that Dessì exposes the inadequacies of her town’s official receptacle of war memories, the monumento ai caduti, in order to interrogate the way collective—but also individual—memory is constructed.

This manifesto takes the coincidence of Peru’s and Greece’s bicentennials of independence, and their overlap with the COVID-19 pandemic, as a departure point, in order to propose a different understanding of mourning from the Global South. The article is an open invitation to reinforce mourning’s capacity to be a reproductive life force, responding to contemporary experiences of loss in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic and the accelerated processes of extinction, especially in resource extraction zones, like the Amazon. Taking inspiration from ancient Indigenous techniques for soil regeneration, fertilizing mourning is a call to merge traditional knowledge, collective practices and non-anthropocentric world-views that resist individualism and capitalism both in the Global South and in places that defend communal life in the north of the planet. This manifesto proposes that to transform prevalent colonial, modern structures, it is necessary to develop a different relationship with nature, by reconsidering the entanglements between life, death and regeneration.

The original contribution of this thesis is the examination of the official construction of a post-apartheid foundation myth through the analysis of the dead body politics of five iconic South African women that spans the three presidencies that have defined South Africa’s democratic era. This thesis examines the death and funeral of Albertina Sisulu, the return and burial of Sara Baartman, and the commemoration of Charlotte Maxeke, Lilian Ngoyi, and Helen Joseph. Sisulu, Baartman, Maxeke, Ngoyi, and Joseph have been constructed as heroines and as foundational figures for the post-apartheid nation in official rhetoric. It will contend that the dead body politics of these women not only informs a new foundational mythology, but also features in the processes of regime legitimation when the ANC-dominated government faces strong societal criticism. Although such official expressions of nationalism may appear exhausted, this thesis will show that nationalism remains a powerful and dangerous force in South Africa that attempts to silence opposition and critical analysis of perceived failing government policies or inaction. This thesis will indicate that as women’s bodies and legacies are appropriated for nationalist projects they are subsumed in discourses of domestic femininity in official rhetoric that dangerously detract from women’s democratic rights and their ability to exercise responsible and productive citizenship in the post-apartheid state. It will argue that women’s historic political activism is contained within the meta-narrative of ‘The Struggle’ and that women are re-subsumed into the patriarchal discourses of the past that are inherited in the present. This thesis approaches this topic by considering a top-to-bottom construction of post-apartheid nationalism through applying feminist critical discourse analysis to official rhetoric articulated at the public mourning and commemorative rituals of these five women.

After the war in Lebanon [1975-1990 ], young film-makers refuse to ignore the past and work by means of their movies to restore a wholesome memory. The present research studies the new films configurations of the post-war Lebanese cinema, characterized by a memorial and countable retrospective within bygone days. By leaning on a cinematic corpus of about twenty movies, analyzed as material and symbolic tracks, the various parts of this research investigate the convergences and the problems which put the dialectic Memory - history through the representation. The study also scrutinizes the tracks of the memory by going through the processes relative to the conflict, to the work of mourning and the oblivion by questioning the capacities of the Lebanese cinema, to calibrate its potential of expression and its capacity to analyze the setbacks of a bruised society. The paths of this research will also examine the representation of Beirut, as anthropomorphic and symbolic city. In last part, the study approaches the profiles of a symptomatic subject in search of its identity at the end of the war in Lebanon

This Thesis is the reworking and re-composition of a study based on the experience acquired by the author from the following:• his active participation in the recent psychiatric reform in Greece (establishment and functioning of a shelter for asylum-seeker patients and later a daycentre for autistic children);• his clinical theory reflections on maltreatment and adolescents (offenders and victims of violence), what the author proposes to call violated transitions.• this research stretching over thirty years on the topic the continuing mourning of the missing persons in Cyprus (on account of the invasion of the island by Turkey in 1974) and the individual, social and political interferences with this impossible mourning;• his studies on the extension of the concept of the work of mourning (as a prototype of the psychic work in his report on the cultural work), the limits and obstacles that the mourning encounters in the context of culture and contemporary society. In the course of these developments, the adopted pluridisciplinary approach gives rise to a dialogue involving the Psychoanalysis, Anthropology and Literature of ancient Greece. Pluridisciplinarity allows, at the same time, the multiplication of approaches, in order to better seize of the phenomena in their complexity and relation to their environments, examine that which is developing on the interfaces, bring out in relief our conceptual and methodological limitations, in order to place into perspective the ways of disengagement and overtaking. (The study on the presumed primacy of the mother in Psychoanalysis and Anthropology, as well as the study on postmodern culture as an anti-mournful meta-frame, are examples of this).4In multiplying the expressions of psychic suffering that have to be studied, the environments where they manifest themselves and the perspectives of their examination, the author is forced to show that the structure and the psychic processes of the individual subject, especially their sufferings, cannot be sufficiently understood and even less so sustained and alleviated, whether one relates them to the loads and contents they take for other subjects, or one articulates and places them in communication with other psychic functions of the latter, also with the frames and meta-frames in which the subjects fall, in their capacity as accepting party and constituent party of a trans-subjective unit.Hypotheses on the inter-subjective processes, functions and contents of transfer, load, transit, trans-subjective framing, recovery and re-symbolization are at the forefront of this work

“An Examination of the Death and Dying of Companion Animals” explores the human-animal relationship as enacted in the home by becoming interspecies families. In particular, these relationships are considered when companion animals are dying and in need of special care and attention. This work provides historical and cultural context for how humans attend to animals in death and dying through the history of pet keeping and a complex literature review to explore the intersections of death and dying and religion, and human-animal studies. Specifically, models for companion animal end-of-life care replicate those services for humans by providing palliative care and a myriad of other treatments to attend to the suffering of aging and terminal pets. In addition to examining the creation of companion animal hospice and how it has quickly grown since the early 2000s, this work also confronts questions of euthanasia as a burdensome decision-making process. The decision to euthanize a loved one is fraught with ambiguity, uncertainty, and, at times, guilt. These experiences are idiosyncratic and by creating a discourse and popular platform through which to share these instances of death and dying, this project contributes to the newly established death positivity movement in drawing attention to caring for dead bodies in the home. This project ends by exploring after-death-care for companion animals. Burial and cremation are still, for the most part, how human families dispose of companion animal bodies. In addition to these more traditional forms of disposition, companion humans are also starting to preserve their companion animal bodies through taxidermy and freeze-drying. Though still considered grotesque by many companion humans, companion animal body preservation is just one example of new and reimagined mourning rituals. It is through these rituals and the recognition of this particular grief that the human-animal relationship in the home is seen in a new, complicated, ambiguous and intimate light.

The purpose of this thesis is to interrogate-the meaning of the Great. War's cult of commemoration by putting the emphasis on the articulation between the time of memory and the time of mourning. The commemoration of the end of the war is thus understood, on the one hand, as a dynamic and evolutionary social process which essentially generated two dominant discourses meant to the conceptualizing of fecund death on the battlefield and to the shaping-up of an image of the self and of the enemy. On the other hand, Armistice Day is seen as a rite of recognition aimed to the living and destined to relieve their loss-related suffering by giving meaning to it. Our concern, first and foremost, is to measure the influence of the present by looking at the meaning attributed to the 11 November 1918 Anniversary by the French in the interwar period, as well as the way they comprehended their past, revived the paradigm of their dead and anticipated their future. This also implies that we follow the itinerary of concepts and values through which war and heroic death in battle were interpreted, represented and referred to by their contemporary. Lastly, our intention is to reflect upon the ability for a mourning society to adapt to its loss, to break away from its traumatizing past and to make peace with itself and others

Combining contributions from the semiotics of images, the anthropology of the written word and media studies, this research focuses on a corpus of several hundred drawings produced in response to the Islamist terrorist attacks of January 2015 in the Île-de-France region. It establishes the extent to which the drawing, as an auxiliary and subject of discourse of popular mobilisations, constitutes a vector of cohesion between French people. The first part of the thesis shows how the attacks of January 2015 constitute a pivotal moment in remembrance practices in France and explains the connections and originality of this doctoral research. Following on from work on the sociology of the attacks, this thesis focuses primarily on the visual dimension of the messages, an aspect that has been little explored until now. The second part examines the media treatment of the attacks, looking at how the framing of an attack on freedom of expression affects the ways in which the French press and television engage the public. The third part analyses a large amount of empirical material from a number of French public and private archives. It takes account of the plurality of graphic practices and forms of politicization in three specific communication devices: ephemeral memorials in three provincial towns, walls in the capital and letters sent to the editorial staff of Charlie Hebdo

According to Jung, the individuation process is a spiritual transformation through which the individual attains the maturity of his personality. This process requires the incorporation of subconscious material to the conscious life. The unconscious, though personal, is according to the famous psychologist full of images and archetypes that conform what Jung called the “collective unconscious”, which transcends the personal and expands inter-culturally through time and space. This is the perspective used in the present study of Soldados de Salamina (2001), a novel by the Spanish writer Javier Cercas. The hero of this story that combines fiction and reality travels from the present time into the past of his country, the Spanish Civil war, with the purpose of understanding. This immersion in time parallels another one in his psyche through which he deepens into the collective unconscious of the Spanish people. As a result, we have the vital, spiritual and psychological voyage of a man that stars the narration from a chaotic state to finally emerge innerly renovated and mature. By virtue of this transformation, we witness the hero’s process of individuation. Soldados de Salamina returns to the mystery of the ix unconscious and becomes the narration of a voyage of a human being from his deepest psyche, both as a universal and a particular man, towards his conscience. Comprehension is ultimately the engine of a novel that revisits the Spanish past in order to heal inner wounds.

Abstract How can transitional justice regimes respond adequately to the imperative to move on after catastrophe without unwittingly perpetuating the “reign of impunity” associated with policies of collective amnesty and amnesia? What form must collective mourning take such that historical wrongs remain unforgotten, while newness remains a distinct alternative to arrested time? What can transitional justice studies learn by exploring a mode of mourning situated intentionally within the interval between refusing consolation and redeeming the past? Exploring these questions and more, this chapter turns first to the constitutive relationship between public memory and what is termed the “democratic arts of mourning.” In particular, the chapter contrasts theories of “mortal humanism,” which find in our common human finitude a resource for what Jean-Luc Nancy calls “being-in-common,” with rituals where forgetting becomes a rite of passage and a condition of membership in political society. The chapter explores the tension between what Bonnie Honig terms “Homeric mourning” and “classical mourning.” Where the former commemorates individuals by emphasizing their distinct particularity, the latter expresses grief in a way that highlights the substitutability of the departed. The chapter argues that this analytical distinction drives many contemporary memorial practices, and contrasts both with a recent public art project that recasts mourning in light of a politics of non-reconciliation. Finally, it concludes by situating mourning as a praxis of freedom that ought to “hack” the past, rather than redeem it.

This essay treads the routes and traces the roots of dispossession created by the Korean War. Framing it not as the “forgotten war” but rather as the “unending war,” the essay renounces individualized theories of trauma and witnesses to the complex spatiotemporal pulls of transgenerational terror. Through contemporary acts of collective mourning, the essay, which is also an exercise in critical Christian theology, reopens the wounds of the cross to register collective rage, grief, and unending mourning as counters to US imperialism. In making a postcolonial turn to affect, the essay confronts elisions in affect theory and assumes a posture of critical melancholia as an intersubjective act of mourning of and resistance to historical trauma.

In 2023, the University of Delaware, in cooperation with the National Park Service (NPS), completed the eighteenth year of a habitat-based landbird monitoring program in park units of the Northern Colorado Plateau Network (NCPN). This program is designed to provide rigorous population trend data for most diurnal, regularly occurring breeding landbird species throughout the network. This population information is useful for land managers and supports the NPS?s goal of long-term monitoring of biological indicators for network parks. University biologists surveyed 42 out of 45 survey locations within 11 NPS units in 2023. Fifteen transects were located in each of the three habitats of interest: low-elevation riparian, pinyon-juniper, and sagebrush shrubland. Each location was surveyed once. In addition to the habitat-based surveys, four point-count surveys and an area search were conducted at Pipe Spring National Monument using a modified monitoring design. Over 18 years of data collection, 16,159 point-count surveys were conducted in 11 NCPN units, detecting 176 unique species. During the 2023 field season, 599 point-count surveys were conducted, detecting 118 unique species. In addition, since 2009, a modified protocol that includes four point counts and an area search has been conducted at Pipe Spring National Monument. Using data from 2005 to 2023, 118 population-density trends were estimated across the three habitats. Fourteen of the estimated density trends were significant (p-value <0.05). Six negative trends were observed: mourning dove (Zenaida macroura) and white-throated swift (Aeronautes saxatalis) in low-elevation riparian, and mourning dove, white-throated swift, Bewick?s wren (Thryomanes bewickii), and mountain bluebird (Sialia currucoides) in pinyon-juniper areas. Additionally, eight positive trends were found: hairy woodpecker (Leuconotopicus villosus) in low-elevation riparian; lazuli bunting (Passerina amoena), yellow-rumped warbler (Setophaga coronata), vesper sparrow (Pooecetes gramineus), and western tanager (Piranga ludoviciana) in pinyon-juniper habitats; and western tanager, Grace?s warbler (Setophaga graciae) and lark sparrow (Chondestes grammacus) in sagebrush shrubland. There were sufficient sample sizes to estimate the densities of 61 species in at least one of the three habitats surveyed.
