The Ecological Cognition perspective emphasizes the fact that human cognition is adaptive to the constraints of the context of task performance. People are good at developing strategies for task performance that take advantage of the informational affordances of the task environment. Therefore, if we wish to understand human cognition, we must look beyond the skin and skull of the individual to the material and social structures with which the mind interacts. Of course, material artifacts and social arrangements are elements of adaptive processes as well. Material artifacts are often crystallizations of regularities in the task environment and they develop over time, changing adaptively to fit the constraints of the task, the properties of the task performers, and the other artifacts employed in the task performance. Such changes in the material artifacts change the informational affordances of the task environment, which creates new opportunities for the development of strategies. Thus, human cognition and the material supports of human cognition must be seen as a co-adaptive system. Similarly, in complex work settings where two or more persons jointly perform tasks, social arrangements are enacted anew each time a socially distributed task is performed. Strategies for the social division of cognitive labor are also part of this co-adaptive system, both constraining and being constrained by mental and material artifacts. These interlocked co-adaptive systems suggest a cognitive ecology. It's a compelling way of talking about such systems. Can it be more than a metaphor?

Recent advancements in communication systems have resulted in a new class of multiple access schemes known as non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), the primary goal of which is to increase spectrum efficiency by overlapping data from different users in a single time-frequency resource used by the physical layer. NOMA receivers can resolve interference between data symbols from various users, hence increasing throughput. Initially, the combination of SCMA and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is addressed, establishing a baseline for the overall SER performance of the multiple access strategy. Furthermore, this work suggests the merging of SCMA with generalised frequency division multiplexing (GFDM).GFDM is an intriguing possibility for future wireless communication systems since it is a very flexible non-orthogonal waveform that can imitate various different waveforms as corner cases. This research suggests two methods for integrating SCMA with GFDM.

The main aim of the article is to establish if and how we can research the impact of automation of work on the labour market. In this paper, I discuss measurement issues of automation of work with theoretical and statistical parts including elements of methodology. The text begins by discussing the dependences between physical and cognitive work and pays attention to the theoretical and historical sources of this division. Then, I point out hybrid forms of cognitive work as a result of the progressing digitalization, which leads me to the indication of big data and algorithms as one of the most important elements of modern work automation. The foregoing prompts the following question: If we take into account the prospective hybridization of machines and humans, should we still measure the cognitive work, especially in its quality dimensions? Finally, I provide examples of some possible methods of measurement of the automation of cognitive work, especially by pointing out selected changes which automation introduces into the labour market.

This study investigated conflict teaching as a means of probing the misconception held by many preservice elementary teachers that in a division problem the quotient must be less than the dividend. Individual interviews were held with 21 preservice teachers who were able to correctly compute quotients for division problems with decimal divisors less than one, but who agreed with an explicit statement that the quotient must be less than the dividend and who selected operations to solve word problems that reflected this misconception. The interviews illustrated how preservice teachers' reliance on information about the domain of whole numbers and their instrumental understanding of the division algorithm support their misconception. The authors also noted preservice teachers' lack of access to the measurement interpretation of division and their willingness to change procedural rules to preserve their misconception.

Abstract Balancing work and family roles proves to be a rather difficult task for most individuals. The social cognitive career theory (Lent, Brown, and Hackett 1994) states that to reach positive outcomes in the work domain, people need to develop self-efficacy through adequate learning experiences. With this study, we tested the importance of two contexts that can provide valuable learning experiences: family and volunteering. Thus, we verified the relationship between the division of labour in the family of origin, respectively, authentic leadership use in the volunteering organization and anticipated work-family and family-work conflict in a sample of student volunteers. Self-efficacy in dealing with the conflict between the two domains was used as a mediator. One hundred and ten students who were also volunteers at the time of the study participated in this research. A series of mediation models showed significant indirect effects from family and volunteering experiences on the conflict between work and family. Spillover effects were also confirmed. This study provides an understanding of how positive contexts such as equitable division of labour in the family and having an authentic leader in the volunteering organization help students develop their self-efficacy, which also contributes to anticipating lower levels of conflict between the work and family domains.

The research aims at identifying the effectiveness of employing both Ishikawa strategies and the key word in teaching biology and its reflection on strategic reading and cognitive thinking skills among the fifth grade students. The researcher selected the study sample from all students in the fifth grade (2016 - 2017) from the Al-Furat Secondary School for Boys under the Directorate General of Education Baghdad Al-Karkh / 1 and the chosen means, (46) students distributed randomly on two divisions (A, B). The total number of students in Division A is 24 students studying using the Ishikawa strategy, and the total number of students in Division B is 22 students studying using the keyword strategy. The equivalence of the two groups was verified in some variables that are believed to affect the results of the experiment: age, previous achievement in biology, strategic reading scale, and cognitive skills testing. The two groups were equal in all variables. As for the research tool, the researcher adopted the strategic reading scale with some modifications, the final form of which was (30) paragraphs. The researcher also prepared the skills of cognitive thinking, which consisted of (30) paragraphs. After completing the research experiment, In the strategic reading scale and the testing of cognitive thinking skills, the experimental group taught in Ishikawa's post-test strategy is superior to strategic reading and cognitive thinking skills to the control group taught using the keyword strategy.

Household labor is commonly defined as a set of physical tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and shopping. Sociologists sometimes reference non-physical activities related to “household management,” but these are typically mentioned in passing, imprecisely defined, or treated as equivalent to physical tasks. Using 70 in-depth interviews with members of 35 couples, this study argues that such tasks are better understood as examples of a unique dimension of housework: cognitive labor. The data demonstrate that cognitive labor entails anticipating needs, identifying options for filling them, making decisions, and monitoring progress. Because such work is taxing but often invisible to both cognitive laborers and their partners, it is a frequent source of conflict for couples. Cognitive labor is also a gendered phenomenon: women in this study do more cognitive labor overall and more of the anticipation and monitoring work in particular. However, male and female participation in decision-making, arguably the cognitive labor component most closely linked to power and influence, is roughly equal. These findings identify and define an overlooked—yet potentially consequential—source of gender inequality at the household level and suggest a new direction for research on the division of household labor.

Socioculturalists' theorizing on the work of the human mind has long maintained boundaries against cognitive science's information processing approaches and language, and vice versa. Frawley argues that no such division is entirely necessary and offers powerful ways of linking the two ways of thinking. Frawley's background in both Vygotskyan and other sociocultural theories, as well as in cognitive science and computational theories, places him in an important position to make these links.

Iterative rules appear everywhere in music cognition, creating strong expectations. Consequently, denial of rule projection becomes an important compositional strategy, generating numerous possibilities for musical affect. Other rules enter the musical aesthetic through reflexive game playing. Still other kinds are completely constructivist in nature and may be uncongenial to cognition, requiring much training to be recognized, if at all. Cognitive rules are frequently found in contexts of varied repetition (AA), but they are not necessarily bounded by stylistic similarity. Indeed, rules may be especially relevant in the processing of unfamiliar contexts (AB), where only abstract coding is available. There are many kinds of deduction in music cognition. Typical examples include melodic sequence, partial melodic sequence, and alternating melodic sequence (which produces streaming). These types may coexist in the musical fabric, involving the invocation of both simultaneous and nested rules. Intervallic expansion and reduction in melody also involve higherorder abstractions. Various mirrored forms in music entail rule-mapping as well, although these may be more difficult to perceive than their analogous visual symmetries. Listeners can likewise deduce additivity and subtractivity at work in harmony, tempo, texture, pace, and dynamics. Rhythmic augmentation and diminution, by contrast, rely on multiplication and division. The examples suggest numerous hypotheses for experimental research.

Elle met l’accent sur les transformations historiques de la division technique du travail, qui ont caractérisé l’évolution du capitalisme industriel et sur la position relativement hégémonique de ses principes dans l’organisation de l’industrie manufacturière durant la période des Trente Glorieuses. Puis, elle insiste sur l’émergence d’un nouveau modèle d’organisation du travail qui a caractérisé le capitalisme contemporain durant la période postfordiste. Ainsi, avec l’avènement du capitalisme cognitif, l’accent est mis sur la montée en puissance des principes de la division cognitive du travail, dans l’organisation de l’industrie manufacturière postfordiste et cela au détriment des principes de la division technique du travail, qui perdent leur position dans l’organisation du travail. This thesis has for object to characterize the concepts of technical and cognitive division of the work and also aims at highlighting the rise of the cognitive dimension of the work in the activities situated at the heart of the process of value creation, in particular in the postfordiste manufacturing industry. She emphasizes the historic transformations of the technical division of the work, which characterized the evolution of the industrial capitalism on the relatively hegemonic position of its principles in the organization of the manufacturing industry during the period Thirty Glorious. Then, she insists on the emergence of a new model of organization of the work which characterized the contemporary capitalism during period postfordiste. So, with the succession of the cognitive capitalism, the accent is put on the increase in importance of the principles of the cognitive division of the work, in the organization of the manufacturing industry postfordiste and in to the detriment of the principles of the technical division of the work, which lose their position in the organization of the work. Digital maps of geographic areas are increasingly common in many types of workplace, in education and in the public domain. Their interactivity and visual features, and the complexity of geographic(al) information systems (GIS) which create, edit and manipulate them, create special cognitive demands on the end-user which are not present in traditional cartographic maps or in most human-computer interaction (HCI). This thesis reviews cross-disciplinary literature regarding cognitive aspects of viewing and interacting with digital maps. Data from an observational study of GIS use, including real-time recordings of normal workplace activities, was analysed using various approaches to examine the interactive and visual aspects of people's work. The implications for cartographic, psychological and HeI aspects of GIS are discussed, in the context of the actual tasks people perform with them (rather than the computationally advanced analyses assumed by most literature). The second phase of the research examined the spatial knowledge attained and used during this interaction. The relevance of specific concepts in cognitive psychology, and of factors that create individual differences in cognition, are discussed in depth, alongside work in environmental and educational psychology, cartography and geography. A controlled experiment examined the degree to which task characteristics induce a different spatial model or reference frame when viewing a digital map. It was shown that even novice users can switch between considering the map as an abstract geometric display or as a geographical representation, without affecting performance. However, tasks forcing subjects to focus entirely on the geometry rather than the geography did affect performance in a surprise post-test photograph identification task. Map users' mental model or reference frame is apparently affected by these task constraints; this has implications for GIS design and practice as well as for understanding spatial cognition The study also considered the role of expertise and other individual difference factors, although conclusions were limited by sample size. Further research issues are highlighted, particularly regarding the knowledge structures and spatial language used in interpreting digital maps.

Fairness is an important concept that regulates many everyday transactions in human societies. While a large literature on the subject of fairness exists within the social sciences, the subject of fairness has not yet been explicitly addressed by researchers working in the area of computer- supported cooperative work (CSCW). One reason for this is that fairness may not seem especially critical for collaboration and, therefore, appears irrelevant to technological design. Yet perceptions about what is ‘fair’ often influence decisions concerning the assignment of tasks, the investment of effort, and the distribution of rewards during collaborative projects. Additionally, making accurate judgements about fairness can be difficult in computer-mediated settings where awareness of shared efforts is limited. This thesis investigates the relationship between fairness and division of labour in collaborative work. We adopt a mixed methods approach to explore the prevalence of fairness in initial, distributive allocations of workload, as well as how fairness comes into play during the enactment of collaborative tasks. Our first study finds that initial allocations of work are made on the basis of fairness, and that perceptions about fairness in division of labour are linked to overall satisfaction with group outcomes. We then introduce a novel model of workload assignment based on the classic ‘ultimatum game’, and explore our model in a series of empirical studies using collaborative search tasks. Our findings provide further evidence of fairness norms in the allocation of work. We also report an emergent matching effect in participants’ task completion times, which we take as further evidence of fairness in the enactment of collaborative workloads. We then report a qualitative study of collaborative search tool use in everyday tasks. This study draws attention to the importance of context in determining the extent to which people police fairness, and provides numerous implications for the design of collaborative search systems. Our final thesis study explores the potential for supporting fairness during CSCW. We suggest that designers should provide awareness about individual contributions and should allow individuals to assess fairness via social comparisons. We report a study of how groups in the online game World of Warcraft use awareness mechanisms to keep track of individual contributions to the collective effort. Our study implies the potential utility of contribution meters while also shedding light on potential side-effects. The thesis ends by considering the implication of our results for current understandings of fairness. We propose a theoretical model that describes the process by which people assess fairness in the division and completion of collaborative workloads.

This research is based on the well-known but seldom stated premise that the design of complex engineered systems is done by people -- each with their own knowledge, thoughts, and views about the system being designed. To understand the implications of this social dimension, the Integrated Concurrent Engineering (ICE) environment, a real-world setting for conceptual space mission design, is examined from technical and social perspectives. An integrated analysis demonstrates a relationship among shared knowledge, process, and product. The design process is analyzed using a parameter-based Design Structure Matrix (DSM). This model, consisting of 682 dependencies among 172 parameters, is partitioned (reordered) to reveal a tightly coupled design process. Further analysis shows that making starting assumptions about design budgets leads to a straightforward process of well-defined and sequentially executed design iterations. To analyze the social aspects, a network-based model of shared knowledge is proposed. By quantifying team members' common views of design drivers, a network of shared mental models is built to reveal the structure of shared knowledge at a snapshot in time. A structural comparison of pre-session and post-session networks is used to compute a metric of change in shared knowledge. Based on survey data from 12 design sessions, a correlation is found between change in shared knowledge and each of several system attributes, including technological maturity, development time, mass, and cost. Integrated analysis of design process and shared knowledge yields three interdisciplinary insights.
(cont.) First, certain features of the system serve a central role both in the design process and in the development of shared knowledge. Second, change in shared knowledge is related to the design product. Finally, change in shared knowledge and team coordination (agreement between expected and reported interactions) are positively correlated. The thesis contributes to the literature on product development, human factors engineering, and organizational and social psychology. It proposes a rigorous means of incorporating the socio cognitive aspects of design into the practice of systems engineering. Finally, the thesis offers a set of recommendations for the formation and management of ICE design facilities and discusses the applicability of the proposed methodology to the full-scale development of complex engineered systems.

Companies are always looking for ways to reduce their costs, cost reductions which allow companies to increase their overall profits. There are various cost reductions strategies, such as: change materials and/or design of the products, change suppliers, and offshore engineering. This last strategy, offshore engineering, is a common practice in today's global industries. This thesis applies the cost-reduction strategy of offshore engineering to the automotive industry. Specifically, this thesis presents an analysis of the Seat Subsystem, which assists the corporation in selecting which components of the subsystem are optimal to be offshored. Based on product architecture design structure matrices, this analysis identifies clusters of components within the Seat Subsystem which are highly interrelated. After adding three variables: experience needed to develop each of the components, current experience of the offshore office, and supplier location of these components, a proposal of which components should be offshored is presented. Further, in this thesis a Process/Organization DSM is used to identify when in the seat development process the Seat Engineers have closer relations with other departments within the organization. The results of this Process/Organization DSM will assist the company in creating travel plans for the engineers. After establishing which components of the seat should be offshored, an additional analysis is presented which assists the organization in determining where to offshore these components. This analysis is based on three frameworks: CAGE, ADDING, and Porter's and virtual diamond. A summary of the results of this analysis presents a quantitative evaluation of three offshoring options: China, India, and Mexico. In addition, in this thesis an analysis is presented to determine how the Seat Organization Architecture needs to be adapted in order to support the Offshore Strategy. This organization transformation is based on three methodologies: Enterprise Architecture Sequence Model, 4P's of Strategy, and Seven Strategy Questions. At the end of this thesis, a six-step process is presented to assist other organizations when an offshore strategy is needed to breakdown the development of a product or system and determine where to offshore each of the components.

The structure of the family unit in the United Kingdom has undergone monumental changes in recent decades. The legal definition of a family has evolved substantially to include a wider range of family forms, most recently same-sex marriage, which became legal in the United Kingdom (excluding Northern Ireland) in 2014. Legal changes in the family accompany a range of social changes - among the most common of these is an expansion in the number of different-sex non-marital co-residential unions (concisely called "cohabitation") (Ermisch and Francesconi, 2000; Beaujouan and Bhrolcháin, 2011). Since the 1970s, these types of relationships have become widely accepted (Coast, 2009) and increasingly common (Office for National Statistics, 2012a). However, despite its prevalence, cohabitation in the United Kingdom is seldom studied independently of marriage. My dissertation strives to fill this gap in the literature. Specifically, my dissertation adds to the understanding of the household division of labour during cohabitation. Instead of merely examining cohabitation as one homogenous relationship type, Chapter 2 profiles three groups of cohabitants: 1) pre-marital cohabitants; 2) non-marital short-term cohabitants; 3) long-term cohabitants who reside together for five years or longer. Subsequent chapters examine how each of these groups, in turn, addresses the household division of labour - pre-marital and early couple formation cohabitation in Chapter 3, couples transitioning from cohabitation to marriage in Chapter 4, and during long-term cohabitation in Chapter 5. This dissertation is a significant contribution to the field of economic sociology because the household division of labour has not yet been explored during cohabitation in this way.

The need to divide attention in order to deal with information flowing in from a number of sources is observable in many work settings. Although most people can perform several simple activities concurrently, such as eating and watching television (Sharon, 1997), making simultaneous decisions is difficult (Pashler & Johnston, 1998). For the majority, task overload causes errors in performance (Girard, 2007), a decline in the quality of treatment (Ruthruff et al., 2001), and longer reaction time (Levy et al., 2006). The few who cope efficiently under such circumstances employ different cognitive strategies. Teamwork is one way of managing multiple demands. Group work makes it possible to deal with larger amounts of information and to generate a variety of ideas as well as to minimize faulty conclusions. On the other hand, individuals make speedier and better decisions, and are not subject to the tensions of interplay (Davis and Toseland, 1987). The literature offers little information on methods of testing the conditions under which tasks should be handled by one agent or a team. The educational project described here was conducted comparing efficiency of performance of a series of tasks by individuals and small groups. 116 participants, ranging in age from high school level through holders of Masters' degrees, 58 women and the same number of men, were presented with a computer game based on educational software. Participants were instructed to manipulate a tracker by means of the keyboard in order to contact a target moving randomly on the screen. The game was arranged in five levels of difficulty. A comparison was made of the speed in which objectives were attained when performed individually and when divided among groups of two to four partners, controlling for the type of coordination, cognitive style and additional background variables. Cases of expedient and inexpedient division of labor were identified, as were factors affecting feasibility. Among the latter were the size of the simultaneous task load, complexity level, number of participants, and the intensity of coordination required among them.

The research aims to diagnose the contribution of the pillars of knowledge management with its main dimensions (cognitive leadership, organizational structure, learning, technology, knowledge sharing), in enhancing the dimensions of the competitive spectrum represented by (cost leadership strategy, differentiation strategy, and response strategy), to express the ability of organizations In reaching a comprehensive and focused vision that contributes to extracting and deducing the main contents of the dimensions of the competitive spectrum through which it is possible to improve performance and achieve excellence through the contents and pillars of knowledge. In order to achieve the objectives of the research, the research was conducted in the pharmaceutical companies sector and within selected companies by designing a questionnaire that was prepared in accordance with the goal of the research. , division manager, unit manager), and by (46) forms, while the number of the form retrieved and valid for analysis reached (43) and a recovery rate of (93%). The data obtained from the investigated field was analyzed using the correlation coefficient and the linear regression equation, which helped to reach a set of results, in the light of which a number of conclusions were crystallized, perhaps the most important of which are: The competitive spectrum, and its different dimensions, especially the response dimension. In light of the conclusions, the research presented its recommendations, and perhaps the most important of them are: the recommendation that urges the surveyed organizations and organizations in the surveyed sector to pay attention to the contents of knowledge in general and pay more attention to the availability of knowledge pillars in particular to achieve a kind of compatibility with the nature of the work of the surveyed organizations and competitive challenges that it can face in order to achieve the desired harmony between the dimensions of the appropriate competitive spectrum with the nature of its business.

This paper presents a dynamic learning framework (DLF) for engineering courses with rich mathematical and geometrical contents. The word “dynamic” implies that there are several moving components in the course contents and assessments. Moving contents are enabled by random-number generators to select text/paragraph from a database or chose a number between two ranges within engineering bounds. Dynamic contents are usually missing in traditional form of instructions such a fixed format book-type problem or static online material. The framework leverages on the computing resources from the recent advancement in touchpad computing devices (such as IPAD and Android based tablets) and web-based technologies (such as WebGL/SVG for virtual-reality and web-based graphics and PHP based server level programming language). All assessments are developed at four increasing levels of difficulty. The levels one through three are designed to assess the lower level learning skills as discussed in the “Bloom’s taxonomy of cognitive skills” whereas level four contents are designed to test the higher level skills. The level-one assessments are designed to be easiest and include guiding materials and solved examples. To lessen the impact of disinterests caused by mathematical abstractions, the assessment and content presentations are strengthened by integrating the mathematical concepts with visual engineering materials from real-world and local important applications. All problems designed to assess the lower level skills are computerized and tested using the Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) algorithm which enabled the instructor to focus on the higher level skills and offer the course in partially flipped classroom setting.

The article is devoted to the interpretive analysis of the whole text in the genre of notes of the St Petersburg writer M. N. Kuraev “Lenfilm” was!.. (2019). The work fits into a literary series dedicated to the bygone era, evoking opposite assessments, which find expression in irony in relation to the governing beginning of the organization of life and respect for the creative activities of people, in this case in the field of cinema. The author of the article attempted, on the basis of a consideration of the information structure of the text, to identify the principles of its organization: division into parts, the order of their following, the intentional settings that determine the selection and organization of language means. The reference to the composition of the text, which is fundamental for the analysis, made it possible to note the features of an organization that is different from the currently actively studied narrative: the connection of the compositional parts in it is determined not by temporary, as in the narrative, but by logical relations; to some initial thesis — a milestone in the presentation of content. Such an organization, which goes back to the functional-semantic type of speech — reasoning, does not exclude the inclusion of a “horizontal” line of development of the semantic content of the text, a kind of leitmotif in the information structure of the text. The variety of compositional components manifested itself in their intonational differences associated with the emotional state of the author at the moment of description, which is typical for ego narration, marked by a variety of intonation patterns of the text as a whole. Semantic analysis revealed a somewhat overestimated orientation of the author towards a common cognitive fund with the reader, which is noticeably shrinking over time. At the same time, an assumption is made about the interest that the text can arouse among readers of different ages. Refs 14.
