AbstractThe objective of this article is to analyze the production of the subject Woman by reviewing some practices, discourses, and technologies promoted by the state, the church, and elites. It is important to emphasize that in most research about women or femininity, female subjectivity appears tightly linked to sexual difference. However, in this work I want to show that the notion of Woman is co-determined by race and class. The experience characteristic of such representation was possible only for a small group of white and bourgeois women. Others—Indian, black, and mestiza “women”—could hardly account for a social experience comparable to the Western narrative about woman. Nevertheless, processes of homogenization allow these others to be classified and disciplined according to the gender norm, yet without altering the prejudices and inequalities produced by the prevailing racist and classist system, which implies the production of other female subjectivities, of other “women.”

In the second half of the twentieth century, a group called the Girls’ Auxiliary (GA) became influential in the lives of many Southern Baptist girls and women. Through weekly meetings, annual camps, fund-raising, and individual mission activities, girls learned about how they could make a difference in the world through missions. In Baptist life, mission was the central work of the church. Alongside the Women’s Missionary Union (WMU), which sponsored and led the girls, the GAs brought attention to the mission cause and helped in collecting funds to support it. In annual “coronations,” girls were honored and crowned as mission queens in the Baptist kingdom. They often even spoke in these church-wide gatherings. This article explores the impact of the GA program on women who ultimately became Baptist ministers. Based on a survey of over 200 contemporary women ministers, the program did clearly impact a significant number of women who reported that the GA program gave them a greater sense of purpose, helped them to understand their vocational calling, and helped them see themselves as church leaders. Ultimately, the GA program became less influential and has now disappeared in many congregations.

Because of their structural position as boundary crossers in virilocal marriages, women in the Mara Region of Tanzania have used historical memory to construct social networks across ethnic boundaries for their own and their community's security. During the colonial era these networks were severely restricted, leading to increasingly difficult lives for women. One group of women who found creative ways to reconstruct these far-reaching networks was church women who went to mission boarding schools. Girls left their homes and made connections to a new family in the church that supported them as they moved into new interethnic communities. They began telling their own life histories in the form of the spiritual testimony, shaped by the practice of confession in the East African Revival beginning in 1942. These narratives of resistance to traditional practices like female circumcision inspired others and created a sense of individual agency. Although these stories seem to represent a rejection, even demonisation, of the past, they carry on work entrusted to these women by their grandmothers, of using storytelling, even within a new narrative genre and in a radically new context, to make connections and build community across ethnic boundaries.

Among the popular feminist projects of the dictatorship period in Chile was the Yela group in Talca, made up of pobladoras (women shantytown residents) and two Maryknoll sisters. Of particular interest is the manner in which this group’s popular feminism and antiviolence work during the 1980s was shaped by the women-church movement and feminist theology related to patriarchy, violence against women, and women’s collective resistance strategies. Over the long term, religious elements were gradually excluded from Casa Yela’s antiviolence work in favor of more secular feminist interpretations. Entre los proyectos feministas populares durante la época de la dictadura en Chile se encuentra la presencia del grupo Yela de Talca, formado por pobladoras (mujeres residentes de poblaciones) y dos hermanas Maryknoll. De particular interés es la forma en que el feminismo popular y antiviolencia de este grupo durante la década de 1980 se moldeó a partir del movimiento mujer-iglesia y la teología feminista relacionada con el patriarcado, la violencia contra las mujeres y las estrategias de resistencia colectiva de mujeres. Background Development of highly accessible interventions that are effective in reducing body weight, preventing weight gain, and maintaining weight loss is urgently needed to solve the current obesity epidemic, especially among African-American women. Aims The purpose of this paper is to describe the development, implementation, and participant evaluation processes of a combined text messaging and peer support group programme to enhance weight management skills among African-American women. Methods The programme’s conceptual framework and operational model were developed to enhance the research design and protocol to support the study rationale and to lay a solid theoretical base for programme implementation. The programme curriculum and schedule were established and embedded into the programme protocol. Results The 16-week text messaging and peer support group intervention was implemented from September 2014 to March 2015. In total, 2089 messages were sent using an online text messaging application. Eight support group sessions were held in the participant’s community centre or community church bi-weekly for approximately one hour. Conclusions This paper provides a blueprint of the methodological aspects and insights from participants’ evaluation of a combined weight management intervention that can be used or adapted by public health nurses and other community health professionals in their work to develop weight management skills among African-American women.

For many Evangelical clergy and lay people, the ‘annual conference’ became a vital feature of Christian life during the second half of the nineteenth century. Dominant among these was the Mildmay Conference, only later rivalled by the convention held at Keswick. The small beginnings of ‘conference going’ were a group of friends who responded to the invitation of the Revd William Pennefather to meet together in his parish at Barnet in 1856. He had not intended to found an annual gathering, but the momentum of the movement he set off was such that after he left Barnet in 1856 for the parish of Mildmay in London’s northern suburbs, the Conference which followed him grew into a powerful organization which not only brought together some three thousand Evangelical clergy and lay people each year, but also involved itself in welfare work which extended beyond the parish boundaries into other areas of London, and supported a wider network of workers in Britain and overseas. The Convention which began to meet at Keswick in 1875 was far removed from the social concerns of Mildmay, and its commitment to a controversial teaching of’holiness’ kept it on the fringes of Evangelical respectability for the first decade of its existence; but by the 1890s the popularity of ‘Keswick teaching’ could no longer be denied. While other Evangelicals sought to attack or denounce the perceived evils which were creeping into both Victorian Church and society, these conference goers sought to renew Evangelicalism from within in a way that would enable them to speak to that changing world with a new, but still distinctively Evangelical, voice.

The researcher believes that while in the Methodist Church of Southern Africa (MCSA) women have been ordained to the ministry of Word and Sacrament since 1976, they remain a minority numerically and are still marginalised in leadership. As a result ordained women remain the most unrecognised and underutilised group in the MCSA. Few women ministers have held leadership positions during this period, particularly primary leadership positions. This article enquires into the experiences (or, ‘acceptance’) of these women, the reasons for the minority representation, and reflects on the future of representative ordained ministry. A theoretical framework of feminist ecclesiology is used as an approach. Primary research provides statistical data upon which the assessment of progress towards gender equality is based. The impact of culture upon institutional gender representation is discussed, together with equality of opportunity in principle and practice. Reference is made to gender equality in other institutions, both secular and religious. The article reflects upon the leadership of the MCSA towards gender equality in the ordained ministry, and some conclusions are drawn and recommendations suggested for the future.

One former member of the small Algiers Mission Band had just had her residence permit renewed for a further two years and so was able to stay longer when others had to go. She saw this as a God-given opportunity to ensure that vital documents got safely back to the UK so that the history of this remarkable group of missionaries, mainly women, should be preserved. To her we owe the preservation of the largely complete archive of the Algiers Mission Band (AMB), the mission society led by Lilias Trotter, which was transferred bit by bit from a flat in central Algiers to the home office in the UK.

The popular reading of the Bible proposed by Ecumenical Center for Biblical Studies (CEBI) is a concrete way of approaching the text based on the demands of reality, thus fitting into what the Pontifical Biblical Commission calls the Liberation Approach. In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the document on The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church, we bring to reflection the memory of the work of popular reading of the Bible carried out in the Catholic Diocese of Mossoró-RN within the methodology proposed by the CEBI. Examining the reports of the meetings that took place in the seventies and eighties of the twentieth century, we can see the strong presence of women, the relationship with ecclesiastical and base communities and popular movements and the resistance of the group that remains active even in the face of a adverse ecclesiastical situation.

Sex workers involved in sexual relations with multiple partners are a key group of women who need access to comprehensive sexual health services, including HIV prevention, treatment, and care (Lafort et al. in Reproductive health services for populations at high risk of HIV: performance of a night clinic in Tete province, Mozambique. BMC Health Services Research, 2010, [2]). There are a broad range of sex workers in various locations including those who are street-based and brothel-based, those who work as escorts, and those who work from their own homes.

Abstract An old saying among members of African-American churches can be applied to most religious groups in the United States: “Women are the backbone of the church.” The saying has a double meaning. Women provide essential support for the church and affirm its moral role, but their work happens in the background and their support is invisible. It is the men who play the leading roles in religious organizations. As a result, most people assume that women have had little importance in U.S. religious history. Few groups had women as leaders before the 1970s, and the largest ones still do not. Men administered the sacraments, wrote the prayer books, preached the sermons, and made the decisions.

Abstract The focus of our study is laywomen of the Episcopal Church. Nevertheless, so central to any consideration of the laity today is the response to women’s ordination, it seems imperative to include an essay on the structure of the clerical profession. The issues raised during the ordination struggle, many of which have surfaced again in the discussion of women in the episcopacy, have mobilized laywomen. According to Princeton sociologist Robert Wuthnow, in contrast to other religious groups, feminists among Episcopalians are more likely to attend church than nonfeminist Episcopalians.’Never mind what he, or his source, the General Social Survey Cumulative File, mean by feminist; the perceived solidarity between feminist churchgoers and women priests is unmistakable. This chapter raises three principal issues: (1) lay response to the female priesthood, (2) the accomplishments women priests them­ selves think they are promoting, and (3) an analysis of the structure of the clergy as it exists today from a historical perspective. I feel that we need this critique not simply to understand the status of the women clergy but also to engage in the discourse concerning professionalism

Abstract Anne whitehead, celebrated by a group ofQiaker men and women in Piety Promoted ... , was born Anne Downer, The daughter of a clergyman of The Church of England, brought up at Charlbury in Oxfordshire, an unusually middle-class background for an early Qiaker. Her education included shorthand and arithmetic, and after her moTher’s death, she brought up and educated her younger sister. Her life was changed by a visit to London in her twenties, when she became a convinced Quaker, perhaps The first woman in London to join The movement. She returned to Charlbury, and held services in The town, which resulted in complete alienation from her family: she Then returned to London. She is known to have interrupted a ‘priest’ in a church in Stepney during his service, which resulted in her being committed to The House of Correction, and detained for ten weeks. Group-work plays a significant part in all undergraduate courses while working effectively as a member of a group is one of the most important generic skills that students need to develop while at university in preparation for their future working lives. Many stakeholders, however, have reservations regarding group-based assignments, in particular about whether or not individual group members are rewarded appropriately for their contribution to the overall group achievement. The success of group-work is dependent on both extrinsic factors, such as assignment design, management, assessment, etc. as well as intrinsic factors, such as the knowledge, skills, etc. of individual group members.In this paper the challenges presented by the extrinsic factors that impact on the success of group-based assignments are considered against the background of the of formal summative assessment of group-based assignments on BSc Computing undergraduate courses in the Department of Computing at Canterbury Christ Church University in the United Kingdom. In particular the effectiveness of group-work in terms of improved learning, improved development of non-cognitive skills and assessment validity/reliability are considered.

The Republic of Kazakhstan of mining industry women drivers of heavy dump trucks hygienic and physiological investigations were carried out. The study was conducted in the areas of studying complex, functional state of the body and indicators of mental and physical performance of. It is established that the harmful occupational factor of working conditions of women drivers of heavy dump trucks is the intensity of the labor process of the first degree. During physiological studies of women drivers, it was determined that on the part of the cardiovascular system, there was a slight increase in the studied indicators of blood pressure and pulse, the state of the respiratory system after the end of the shift confirms a significant functional tension of the respiratory organs under the influence of work. There was a decrease at the end of the work shift in the index of the coefficient of mental productivity by 54.7%, the speed of information processing by 50.9%, the ability to assess danger signals and attention stability, which characterizes the state of fatigue at the end of the work shift. The results of dynamometry showed no significant decrease in physical performance. The research results did not reveal harmful production factors that could directly affect a woman’s reproductive health, provided that healthy workers are allowed to work. However, the analysis of men of this professional group working for a longer period of time showed a statistically significant higher level of morbidity indicators.

Abstract The article aims to understand, from the narratives of elderly women who live in the rurban context of a small town, which are the different social markers that intersect with the marker work, and how these intersections are expressed in the lives of these women. This is a qualitative, descriptive, field research, which was developed in the municipality of Coxilha, state of Rio Grande do Sul. The methodology adopted for data collection was the application of 10 semi-structured interviews with elderly women residents of the municipality, preceded by a literature review on the theme. As an analytical concept, intersectionality is used to explore how gender, generation, and territory create fundamentally different experiences, but also inequalities. The main axes for grouping the data are the sexual division of labor, care as work, and rural work. According to the results, we can assess the singularity that the territory creates in the formation of the work experiences of the group of elderly women. Despite being a group where different social markers are present (such as race, social class), rural work, care work and the sexual division of labor are expressed in the same way in this group of women. There is the permanence of asymmetrical relations between men and women (gender) in relation to work, which are configured through their relationship with the studied territory. The findings indicate that the social markers identified (gender, generation, race, and religion) are directly crossed by the manifestations of the territorial context, more specifically, that the social marker of the territory is a catalyst for the other markers.

Depression and anxiety in general medical practice lead to maladaptive conditions that reduce performance and contribute to the manifestation of psychosomatic disorders. Timely prevention and diagnosis of these disorders becomes an important condition for the success of medical care and the return of the patient to work. The purpose of the work is to study the nature of the distribution and the severity of secondary anxiety and depression, and the state of the problem of mental health and mental hygiene from the standpoint of occupational medicine. Research methods. Patients (n=260) undergoing hospitalization in the clinic of occupational diseases were examined. The survey was conducted with the HADS and Beck tests (n=241, mean age 55.7±11.3 years) and included men (n=120, mean age 55.3±12.9 years), women (n=121, mean age 60.4±10.5 years). Results. In the risk group n=94 with severe anxiety (10.9±2.84) and depression (10.2±1.9), 67% were women. The distribution of indicators of anxiety and depression showed the predominance of values on the anxiety scale for occupational (10.5±2.4) and work-related (11.8±3.2) diseases in the group of women. Conclusion. Based on the results obtained, the question arises of the need for an in-depth study of these conditions in the clinic and the improvement of psychohygienic measures in the workplace.

The paper is an initial form of dissemination of the research activities carried out by the IUAV University of Venice working group which, on behalf of the Municipal administration of Brendola, seeks to delineate the application of a methodology for the study and analysis of the architectural and landscape heritage of significant cultural interest that is in a state of abandonment. The case study application is the church of San Michele Arcangelo in Brendola (Vicenza), known as the “Incompiuta” (“Unfinished”). The case study proposed is an interesting exemplar of ecclesiastical architecture, designed by engineer-architect Fausto Franco, in which its characteristics of being unfinished and in a state of ruin contribute to redefining the image of a work that fits in a historical context of architectural and technical experimentation, where the reference to historical architecture is mediated by contemporary forms and by the use of modern building materials, among which, the use of reinforced bricks is noteworthy. The research activity, which is taking place in the context of the COVID-19 health emergency, aims at putting a series of strategies and operational practices based on the digitisation of data to the test, so as to allow increased interoperability and sharing through the building of an online open data repository addressed to the actors involved in the conservation process and to the community. In the processes of conservation and valorisation, in-depth knowledge and documentation of the materials and construction techniques involves multidisciplinary areas; effectively organising them in a system that regulates their collection, cataloguing, processing and archiving according to shared procedures, therefore becomes a fundamental prerequisite for the development of operational planning of the valorisation strategies. All the instruments that make it possible to collect data and reach a true knowledge of the object therefore become indispensable. From this point of view, the push towards the digitisation of the data that emerged during the pandemic phase plays a fundamental role in the range of application possibilities, from the survey to the mechanisms for the conservation and management of the cultural heritage.

Kulon Progo is a district known as one of the centers for agricultural products in the Yogyakarta Special Region Province. Agricultural product processing efforts in Kulonprogo Regency still face challenges in terms of optimal community capacity and capabilities, especially as found in Hargomulyo Village, Kokap District. These Community Engagement Activities are intended for employment and increasing citizen participation, especially women in development through community empowerment. The Mekar Mandiri Women Farmera Group is a group of women farmer's wives or women in Hargomulyo Village who have activities in the agricultural sector in utilizing agricultural resources to work together to increase farm productivity and the welfare of its members. In carrying out its activities, the Mekar Mandiri Farmer Group has several obstacles: (1) Limited insight into developing agricultural business; (2) Limited skills in processing agricultural products; (3) Limited equipment for processing agricultural products. The solutions offered in Community Engagement activities are (1) training to broaden people's insights and capacity building, (2) facilitation of business equipment procurement, and (3) assistance in applying for home industry permits and trademarks. The conclusion that can be drawn from this community engagement activities are the development of an entrepreneurial spirit and increase the skill and ability of women farming groups member to process garden products (post-harvest).

Since the 1990s, the increase in work-related psychiatric complaints in Brazil, including in Paraíba-PB, highlights the relationship between work and illness. Data were collected on work-related mental disorders in Paraíba. This study aims to provide a comprehensive epidemiological analysis of work-related mental disorders in Paraíba, seeking to identify trends and risk factors. Using data from the IT Department of SUS-DATASUS (2015-2023), an ecological study was adopted to evaluate aspects such as age group, race, sex, occupation, diagnosis, evolution, issuance of Work Accident Report (CAT) and absence due to wear. The analysis reveals significant trends: the most affected age group is 40-60 years old (50.24%), with an increase among workers aged 20-39 years old (175.86%). Predominance of cases in mixed race (51.86%), with an increase of 1016.67%. Higher prevalence in women (77.87%), with 2.26 times more absences (69.37%). Neurotic and mood disorders were the most common (87%), progressing to temporary disability in 84% of cases. There was an increase in the issuance of CAT (215.38%), but 54.44% were not notified. Elementary school teachers were the most affected (27.97%). The increase in notifications among brown individuals may be associated with the growing recognition and acceptance of racial self-declaration. Female predominance reiterates the social overload of gender, resulting in physical and mental exhaustion. Furthermore, the prevalence of mood disorders in workers with multiple assignments and low pay suggests a possible relationship with continuous exposure to specific stressors. The urgency of interventions to promote the mental health of workers, especially women and mixed race, is highlighted. The lack of psychological support can lead to temporary or permanent disabilities. Multidisciplinary actions are essential to preserve mental health and improve the quality of life in the workplace in Paraíba.

From the 1970s social and political changes in Australia and the burgeoning feminist movement were challenging established power relationships and hierarchies. This paper explores how in the 1980s groups of women architects actively took positions that were outside the established professional mainstream. A 1982 seminar at the University of Queensland galvanised women in Brisbane to form the Association of Women Architects, Town Planners and Landscape Architects. Formally founded the association was multi-disciplinary and not affiliated with the established bodies. Its aims included promoting women and working to reform the practice of these professions. While predominately made up of architects, the group never became part of the Royal Australian Institutes of Architects, it did inject itself into its activities, spectacularly sponsoring the Indian architect Revathi Kamath to speak at the 1984 RAIA. For five years the group was active organising talks, speakers, a newsletter and participating in Architecture Week. In 1984 an exhibition ‘Profile: Women in Architecture’ featured the work of 40 past and present women architects and students, including a profile of Queensland’s then oldest practitioner Beatrice Hutton. Sydney architect Eve Laron, the convenor of Constructive Women in Sydney opened the exhibition. There was an active interchange between Women in Architecture in Melbourne, Constructive Women, and the Queensland group, with architects such as Ann Keddie, Suzanne Dance and Barbara van den Broek speaking in Brisbane. While the focus of the group centred around women’s issues such as traditional prejudice, conflicting commitments and retraining, its architectural interests were not those of conventional practice. It explored and promoted the design of cities and buildings that were sensitive to users including women and children, design using natural materials and sustainability. While the group only existed for a short period, it advanced positions and perspectives that were outside the mainstream of architectural discourse and practice. Nearly 40 years on a new generation of women is leading the debate into the structural inequities in the architectural profession which are very similar to those tackled by women architects in the 1980s.

Introduction: Maximal cardiac output (COmax) is one of the most important functional parameters related to cardiorespiratory capacity (VO2max) and physical fitness. In clinical medicine, low COmax values are a risk factor for imminent heart failure. Conversely, high COmax values are a prerequisite for achieving high performance in sports, especially in endurance disciplines. Methods: To determine the COmax, we used our own modification of the COmax calculation from the VO2max values obtained during the spiroergometric examination (Stork et al. - 1). Our work is based on the findings of Stringer et al (2), which documented a very close correlation between COmax values obtained by calculation and COmax values obtained by the classical method according to Fick's principle. Subjects: From our 20-year examination database, we included in this study 641 men (M) and 164 women (F) over 19 years of age who completed a stress test on a bicycle ergometer with a graded load to the maximum. To calculate COmax, we used the equation with which we have already worked in several of our earlier studies. We have divided the files into three groups according to different physical activity: group A included well-trained endurance-athletes, who had several years of sports training at the time of the examination. Group B included subjects who engaged in physical activity only in their free time without competing in any sports competition. Subjects with various health problems who either never played any sport at all or ended their sports career many years ago, were included in group C. Results: COmax in group M-A (n=462, COmax=28.38±4.47 l/min) was significantly higher than in groups M-B (n=143, COmax=19.4±3.7 l/min) and M-C (n=36, COmax=18.4±5.9 l/min). It was the same with the women's groups. COmax values in group F-A (n=58, COmax=20.7±3.7 l/min) were significantly higher than in groups F-B (n=88, COmax=12.8±2.3 l/min) and F-C (n=18, COmax=12.1±2.0 l/min). There were no significant differences in both M and F between groups C and D. The same findings were found when comparing maximal stroke volume (SVmax) values. Conclusions: Movement activity is a condition for the development and maintenance of the adaptive abilities of the cardiorespiratory system. The parameters measured in recreational sportsmen correspond to the average of a healthy average fit population. If physical activity is not part of a healthy lifestyle and, in addition, there are health problems (in our groups C obesity and resting and exertional chest pains are the most common), in many subjects from our groups C the COmax parameters are significantly below average and close to the level characterizing the NYHA-1 to NYHA-2 group according to cardiology classification. The results show, on the one hand, how important factor in health prevention is regular physical activity, and, on the other hand, the applicability of our modified method to determine non-invasively the maximum cardiac output. We investigate how changes in barriers to female labor force participation and in the child penalty affect occupational decisions, fertility and income. We build a general equilibrium model of occupational choice with men and women, human capital investment and fertility. We fit the model to the US and India. Changing gender barriers account for 31% of US growth between 1960 and 2010 (4.1% for India in 1983-2004). The implications of these barriers for the welfare of female workers with children were even larger, with lower child penalty alone increasing the welfare of this group by 7% in the US.

Overview of the Project Gender inclusivity and equal employment opportunities are key priorities for the Victorian Government. The Gender Equality Act 2020 (the Act) commenced in March 2021 and laid the foundation to improve workplace gender equality in the Victorian public sector. The legislation requires Victorian public sector entities to explicitly address intersecting forms of inequality and disadvantage. The research project aimed to centre the voices of women with disability to provide evidence-based insights into the enablers, barriers and inclusive practices shaping their career progression and promotion in the Victorian Public Service. The research team reviewed scholarly literature, analysed data extracts from the People Matter Survey (2021) and interviewed 49 women with disability from across the Victorian Public Service. Summary of Key Findings People Matter Survey Data 2021 Analysis of the People Matter Survey 2021 data extracts identified statistically significant insights. People who identified as having a disability analysed by gender identity indicated that: ● women and people who identified as non-binary and ‘other’ reported having a disability more often than men. ● women were more likely to use one or more flexible work arrangements. ● more requests for workplace adjustments were made by women, non-binary or ‘other’ gender identities and disability was often identified as a reason for requesting workplace adjustments. ● women and men reported low perceptions of workplace culture related to disability. This was significantly lower for respondents who identified as non-binary, ‘other’ or who preferred not to state their gender. Research Interviews with Women with Disability Interviews with women with disability identified three career patterns. Firstly, broadly inclusive, and positive career experiences. Secondly, broadly non-inclusive career experiences which led participants to feel unsure they had a future career in the VPS. Thirdly, most participants experienced a range of inclusive and non-inclusive career experiences which varied depending on the VPS employer or team in which they were employed. Overall, participants highlighted a desire for: ● the VPS to move forward with more consistency in how it enables the careers of women with disability across all roles and levels of seniority. ● the VPS to move away from putting women with disability in the ‘too hard basket’ towards developing a culture where disability inclusion is characterised by relationships and interactions that reflect ‘respect’ and ‘trust’. Eight themes draw together insights from the interviews with women with disability and identify experiences of the VPS workplace that can enable or create barriers to career progression: ● Sharing Disability Information ● Requesting Workplace Adjustments ● Disability Advocacy ● Team Relations ● Impact of Managers and Supervisors ● Mentorship ● Disability Leadership ● Policy Context and Application To build on the enabling aspects of women with disabilities experiences and remove barriers, the VPS should focus on fostering VPS workplaces where respect and trust are embedded throughout the broader culture. There may be value in identifying one or a small group of VPS employers to lead on developing the inclusive practices identified by participants. The inclusive practices identified by participants were drawn together into three key areas: VPS Managers and Supervisors; Psychological Safety; and VPS Policies and Practices. Respecting the agency of women with disability, their capability and capacity to navigate their career contexts, the report suggests three key areas women with disability may want to focus their energy and sources of support: seeking out mentoring opportunities, considering how they can advocate for their inclusion requirements, and exploring opportunities to share their career experiences with other women with disability.

Perinatal mental health (PNMH) is an ongoing concern for women and families, as well as for health and social care services. It is estimated that 10-20% of women will experience mental health issues and up to 10% of fathers may also experience difficulties with their mental health. This issue was recently highlighted by national media. Our previous stakeholder consultation work identified service gaps for women in the mild-moderate category of PNMH. This project aimed to explore this identified gap further by bringing together a diverse group of partners, including women/families, practitioners and researchers to co-develop a collaborative action-research agenda. Project design and delivery was developed in collaboration with an expert with lived experience to ensure all elements were relevant and relatable. It is crucial to involve all stakeholders, including those with lived experience and practitioners, in discussions regarding successful interventions for perinatal mental health. This approach ensures that families receive better outcomes in a sustainable and scalable manner.

We study the labor market effects of the Venezuelan migration shock on female labor market outcomes in Colombia using a Bartik-instrument approach.For our identification strategy we leverage regional variation from pull factors and time variation from push factors. Our findings show that in the labor market, female immigrants can act as substitutes or complements for native-born women depending on native women’s education level; immigrant workers are substitutes in the labor market for native-born low-educated women as they compete for similar jobs. Hence, the low-educated native women’s labor force participation decreases. At the same time, time spent doing unpaid care increases for low-educated native women, possibly further preventing the job search for this group. On the other hand, we find an increase in labor force participation of 1.6 p.p. for highly educated women with minors at home and a 1 p.p. higher likelihood of becoming entrepreneurs due to the migratory shock, which supports the complementary-skill hypothesis. This study shows that the trend of declining gender gaps in labor market indicators in Latin America in previous decades did not change significantly in most countries during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, a closer look at the dynamics during the 2019-2021 period shows that (i) women were harder hit in terms of employment losses during the 2020 economic shock; (ii) despite the labor market recovery, women in 2021 often remained less likely to work than they did in 2019; nevertheless, (iii) in a subset of countries the gender gap in employment rates widened. However, relative to the value of their 2019 wages, the accumulated income losses were considerably greater for women than for men in most cases. This can create scarring effects for the future through greater vulnerability, lower incomes, and reduced probabilities of job insertion. The groups of women hit hardest by the shock were those with less than a tertiary education, those in the 14-24 year-old age group, those living in urban areas, and those working in the tertiary sector.

The Adult Entertainment Sector (AES) is a relatively new and growing sector in Kathmandu, developing rapidly after international aid and trade relations led to the growth of a consumer economy and the development of a consumer culture. The AES employs women and girls in a context where alternative work opportunities are limited. The sector is included by CLARISSA as one of the worst forms of child labour (WFCL) due to the nature of forced labour, slavery, and commercial sexual exploitation of children inside the sector. During the CLARISSA life story analysis, many children from this area emphasised poor family relationships and the majority of children from this settlement are engaged in some sort of child labour. This is a report of the Action Research Group in this location, which covered two themes: (1) lack of awareness and family conflict leading to abuse and exploitation at the workplace, and (2) social norms around voices of children not being important in relation to family matters.

Out of ~11.000.000 enslaved Africans disembarked in the Americas, ~ 46% were taken to Brazil, where transatlantic slave trade only ended in 1850 (official abolition of slavery in 1888). In the Brazilian inland «capitania» Minas Gerais, slave numbers exploded due to gold mining in the first half of 18th century from 30.000 to nearly 300.000 black inhabitants out of a total ~350.000 in 1786. Due to gender demographics, intimate relations between African women and European men were frequent during Antonio da Costa Peixoto’s lifetime. In 1731/1741, this country clerk in Minas Gerais’ colonial administration, originally from Northern Portugal, completed his 42-page manuscript «Obra Nova de Língua Geral de Mina» («New work on the general language of Mina») documenting a variety of Gbe (sub-group of Kwa), one of the many African languages thought to have quickly disappeared in oversea slaveholder colonies. Some of Peixoto’s dialogues show African women who – despite being black and female and therefore usually associated with double subaltern status (see Spivak 1994 «The subaltern cannot speak») – successfully renegotiate their power position in trade. Although Peixoto’s efforts to acquire, describe and promote the «Língua Geral de Mina» can be interpreted as a «white» colonist’s strategy to secure his position through successful control, his dialogues also stress the importance of winning trust and cultivating good relations with members of the local black community. Several dialogues testify a degree of agency by Africans that undermines conventional representations of colonial relations, including a woman who enforces her «no credit» policy for her services, as shown above. Historical research on African and Afro-descendant women in Minas Gerais documents that some did not only manage to free themselves from slavery but even acquired considerable wealth.

Adolescence, a time of transition to adulthood, is different for young men and women in Pakistan; brothers and sisters living under the same roof have different opportunities available in all aspects of life. More young people aged 15–24 live in Pakistan now than at any other time in its history—an estimated 36 million in 2004. Recognizing the dearth of information on the situation of this large group of young people, the Population Council undertook a nationally representative survey from October 2001 to March 2002. The analysis presented in this brief comes from Adolescents and Youth in Pakistan 2001–02: A Nationally Representative Survey. The survey sought information from youth aged 15–24, responsible adults in the household, and other community members in 254 communities. A total of 6,585 households were visited and 8,074 young people were interviewed. This brief concludes that girls face disadvantages, especially in rural areas, and that parents, community, and policymakers need to work together to ensure that girls, like their brothers, are able to make a successful transition to adulthood.

Approximately 300 Americans are estimated to have traveled or attempted to join the Islamic State (ISIS) as part of the group’s campaign in Syria and Iraq between 2013 and 2019. These individuals joined more than 53,000 men, women, and minors from roughly 80 countries. Often referred to as foreign (terrorist) fighters (FTF), these are individuals from third countries who travel to join a terrorist group to support its activities. In the United States (U.S.) context, the FTF designation does not denote the act of fighting itself, but rather the support of a designated foreign terrorist organization (FTO). While many of these radicalized individuals traveled alone to the conflict zone, others brought their families or formed new ones in-theater. As ISIS’ selfdeclared caliphate collapsed, many were killed, some fled to other locations, and many were captured and held by Kurdish forces. Men and some teenage boys were primarily placed in prisons, while women and minors were often moved into detention camps. Today, an estimated 10,000 male FTFs remain held in northeastern Syria including 2,000 men and boys from 60 countries outside Syria and Iraq (third country nationals, or TCNs). In addition, local camps hold close to 55,000 female FTF and FTF-affiliated family members, including roughly 10,000 TCN women and children. Some of these individuals have now been in detention for four years or more. The indefinite detention of FTF and FTF-affiliated families in northeastern Syria is not a tenable solution. In addition to clear humanitarian concerns, there is a significant security risk that the facilities’ inhabitants provide a groundswell of recruits to the still active ISIS campaign in the region. A 2022 U.S. military report puts it bluntly, “These children in the camp are prime targets for ISIS radicalization. The international community must work together to remove these children from this environment by repatriating them to their countries or communities of origin while improving conditions in the camp.” In lockstep, U.S. diplomatic leaders have made repatriation a policy priority empowered by a general domestic partisan consensus that the repatriation of FTF and FTF-affiliated families from northeastern Syria should be done expediently. Progress has been slow, while many Western nations were strongly resistant to bringing their detained citizens home, there is recent evidence for cautious optimism. Approximately 9,200 persons – including 2,700 TCNs and 6,500 Iraqis repatriated since 2019. This year, 13 countries have repatriated roughly 2,300 persons, including more than 350 TCNs. However, more work remains to be done. As of July 15, 2023, 39 U.S. persons have been officially repatriated, including both adults and minors. At least 11 additional U.S. persons have returned on their own accord, ten of whom remained in the U.S. following their return. Furthermore, the U.S. has made the decision to bring several non-U.S. persons to the U.S. to stand trial.
