Summary: In clinical practice, child psychologists' case formulations are often based on parental reports. In this study, we examined whether mothers' reports of internalizing and externalizing behavior problems in their children might be biased by maternal psychopathology. The target child sample consisted of 68 boys aged 6-12 years who were receiving treatment. Mothers' reports were compared with the reports of both teachers and group care workers as criterion ratings. After controlling for variance shared with the independent raters, multiple regression analysis indicated substantial partial correlations between various types of maternal psychopathology and the reporting of internalizing child behavior problems. Only small to insignificant partial correlations were found in the case of externalizing behavior problems. This finding is consistent with the social attribution theory that predicts greater distortion when observing more ambiguous stimuli.

Introduction: The current global pandemic due to SARS-CoV-2 has resulted in a large literature on associated comorbidities, including diabetes. COVID 19 infection in a diabetic child can be complicated by severe ketoacidosis. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of COVID-19 infection on a diabetic child. Observations: The first case involved a 12-year-old Congolese child from a diabetic mother who was hospitalized for febrile respiratory distress and a consciousness disorder. Biological examinations showed the first diabetic ketoacidosis. Chest radiography showed radiological images suggestive of COVID-19 involvement, which was confirmed by a PCR and a thoracic CT. The evolution was marked by the appearance of a left pleurisy of medium abundance, which regressed after treatment. Second, a 16-month-old infant with no prior history was admitted to the hospital for febrile dehydration with impaired consciousness. Biological tests were consistent with diabetic ketoacidosis. Multiplex PCRs were performed showing infection with SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses (adenovirus, rhinovirus and enterovirus). Chest radiography was normal. The evolution was favorable under treatment with insulin therapy, rehydration, and antibiotic therapy. Conclusion: After discussing the role of decompensation or the triggering of diabetes in children with SARS-CoV-2 infection, the authors insist on the polymorphism of the clinical presentation and the need to perform a PCR in a diabetic child with ketoacidosis.

Avoidant/Restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is characterized by dietary restrictions that are not based on weight or shape concerns but that result in marked interference in feeding, growth, or psychosocial functioning (American Psychiatric Association, 2013; Eddy et al., 2019). The aim of the current article was to review available reports of treatment for childhood ARFID published since its inclusion in the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), and to introduce a novel parent-based treatment for child ARFID through a case presentation. Empirical support for psychosocial treatments for child ARFID currently stems from two small-scale pilot randomized control trials, one pilot open trial, case reports, case series, and retrospective chart reviews. Treatment approaches for outpatient care generally apply family-based therapy, child-centered cognitive behavioral therapy, or parent-based behavioral approaches. SPACE-ARFID is a novel outpatient parent-based treatment that focuses on parental responses to child problematic eating habits. SPACE-ARFID aims to promote flexibility and adjustment in food related situations. The treatment helps parents to systematically reduce family accommodation, or changes that they make to their own behavior to help their child avoid or alleviate distress related to the disorder, while increasing supportive responses to the child's symptoms.

Suggestibility is the degree to which someone responds to and is influenced by suggestions made by someone or something. Scientific studies have shown that suggestibility most often correlates with memory processing, false memory and false confession phenomena and is crucial to child testimony and forensic psychological examination. Traditionally, there are two general suggestibility research approaches: the experimental psychology and the individual difference approach. Experimentally designed studies reflect the effects of misinformation – conditions under which suggestions affect recall of events. The individual difference approach seeks to identify people as being more or less suggestible, relating different degrees of suggestibility with several cognitive and personality variables. Both approaches suggest that certain social, cognitive and psychological factors affect the accuracy of a person`s report (testimony). The current article will focus primary on the accuracy of children reports in the context of forensic psychological examination. The inaccuracy can be due to unconscious assimilation of false suggestions and pressure made by those (usually adults) who have access to the child (suggestibility) or to conscious lies on the part of the child. Some data extractions from research in relation to factors affecting the accuracy of children`s reports during forensic psychological examinations and overall children`s testimonies will be provided. In this context, a case study from forensic psychological examination will be discussed.

AbstractThis case study reports a brief cognitive-behavioural intervention with a 10-year-old child who presented in a clinical setting with an adjustment disorder which has been rarely discussed in the literature. The focus of the paper is on the intervention which was individually devised to suit the child, the particular presenting problems, and the family context of the child. Although there were no quantitative data collected, the outcome as reported by the client and her carer, together with clear behavioural indicators, attested to positive effects of therapy. Relevant factors that contributed to the outcome are discussed.

ABSTRACTThe present paper reports a case-study of a normally developing boy who made pronominal errors for about ten months. Comprehension and production of first- and second-person pronouns were longitudinally examined from 1; 7 to 2; 10 to test three hypotheses concerning pronominal errors: pronominal errors are a result of either (a) semantic confusion, (b) simple imitation, or (c) confusion between self and others. The results showed that the child began using first- and second-person pronouns at about 1; 8 and mastered the correct usage by 2; 10. Consistent errors for the first- and the second-person pronouns were observed from 1; 11 to 2; 4, but proportions of errors occurring in his imitative language were low. The comprehension and production data clearly indicated that the child persistently made pronominal errors due to semantic confusion. That is, first-person pronouns referred to a person with whom the child conversed and second-person pronouns referred to himself.

Special educators were surveyed in order to determine which of two distinct styles of school psychologists' reports, (psychological vs. psychoeducational) was perceived to be most useful. The sample population consisted of 39 special educators employed by the Bowling Green (Ky.) Independent School District and the Warren County (Ky.) Board of Education. Teachers' rankings of the ten report sections (five per style of report) were compared by an analysis of variance. Results of the 2 (report style: psychological vs. psychoeducational) by 5 (report sections: referral vs. background and observations vs. tests/procedures vs. diagnosis or conclusions vs. recommendations) ANOVA revealed no significant findings for style or section. Neither was there a significant style by section interaction. Analysis of the ten report sections' mean rankings and standard deviations provides support for the contention that special educators prefer the psychoeducational report to the psychological report, particularly the specific nature of its Recommendations section. Section means and standard deviations reveal that the Recommendations section of the psychoeducational report Was most often ranked as most valuable and that its ranking by teachers displayed the least amount of deviation from its mean ranking. When asked which of the reports was the better of the two, 90% of the special educators responded the psychoeducational report was.

Child maltreatment has been linked to a wide range of poor child outcomes. Although children's reports of parenting are essential within clinical contexts, such as child welfare investigations or forensic interviews, children's reports of parental behaviors are not widely used within research contexts. Delineating child reports of maltreatment and parenting in the context of research could enhance methods of assessment and inform clinical practice. Thus, the present research sought to examine the utility of children's reports of deficient parenting and maternal alcohol abuse in the prediction of childhood internalizing and disruptive behaviors. Participants were 350 children aged 4 to 9 and their mothers, who were enrolled in a 3-year longitudinal study examining parenting and children's social development. A multi-method, multisource approach to data collection was used. Children's internalizing and disruptive behaviors were assessed at two time points occurring approximately 12 months apart, and were based on mothers' reports and research assistant observations. Information regarding parenting and maternal alcohol abuse was obtained from children, mothers, and direct observational measures. Structural equation modeling was used to explore the effects of deficient parenting and maternal alcohol abuse on concurrent and prospective child behavior problems. Age was included as a potential moderator of the link between deficient parenting and child behavior. A single construct conceptualization of deficient parenting was not supported by the data and the influences of each aspect of deficient parenting were examined independently. Results were varied across informants and depending on the specific aspect of parenting being assessed, providing partial support for the hypotheses. Among younger children, child-reported care neglect significantly predicted later anxiety and was marginally associated with concurrent disruptive behaviors. Current maternal alcohol abuse was marginally associated with both concurrent disruptive and internalizing behavior. Among older children, the multi-source index of care neglect significantly predicted later disruptive behaviors, while the multi-source index of harsh discipline and child-reported supervisory neglect predicted concurrent disruptive behaviors. For both age groups, mothers' lifetime history of alcohol abuse significantly predicted concurrent and later disruptive behavior, and later internalizing behavior. Children's reported exposure to maternal alcohol abuse was significantly associated with concurrent disruptive behaviors. The link between harsh discipline and concurrent internalizing problems was marginally significant. Finally, supervisory neglect was associated with internalizing behaviors, but results varied depending on the measure of supervision used. Current findings provided additional support for the utility of distinguishing between aspects of deficient parenting and examining the unique influences of aspects of parenting on child behavior. Overall, findings offer support for the predictive validity of children's reports of parenting and maternal alcohol abuse, and emphasize the importance of assessing children's experiences of parenting separately from other informants. Findings highlight the complexity of the relation between parenting and child adjustment, and suggest that the nature of these relations maybe fluid across children's development.

The ability to effectively regulate one’s emotions has been linked with many aspects of well-being. However, disagreement in parents’ and children’s reports of children’s emotion regulation presents significant measurement and conceptual challenges. This investigation aimed to identify predictors of these discrepancies from among demographic, psychopathology, and child emotional awareness measures and to examine patterns of discrepancies among three emotion types (i.e., anger, sadness, and worry) and three regulation “strategies” (i.e., inhibition, dysregulated expression, and coping). Sixty-one mother-child dyads (41 girls, mean age 9.3 years) participated. As hypothesized, age, child and parent report of psychopathology, and poor emotion awareness all emerged as significant predictors of discrepancy. Additionally, discrepancies for inhibition subscales across all three emotions were of a larger magnitude than the other subscales; the effect was more pronounced for sadness than worry. Overall, the findings suggest patterns of disagreements are not random but rather may provide unique information that could elucidate relations among emotion regulation, psychopathology, and other indices of functioning.

Child maltreatment, and recurrent maltreatment in particular, occurs at an alarmingly high rate. Frequency of reports to Child Protective Services (CPS) is associated with negative psychological outcomes, and children whose reports are unsubstantiated experience similar risk of behavioral, emotional, and substance use disorders as those whose reports are substantiated. Prior research has demonstrated that children with no CPS reports and children with one CPS report showed no significant differences in rates of maltreatment perpetration or substance use in adulthood, suggesting that prevention efforts after one report may have strong merit in reducing negative outcomes in adulthood. However, patterns and risk factors of unsubstantiated reports have been only minimally explored thus far, despite having been found to predict subsequent maltreatment. The current study extends upon previous research by (a) examining both substantiated and unsubstantiated reports to identify longitudinal patterns of timing and recurrence and (b) assessing the extent to which service provision mediates long-term recurrence after each type of report. Analyses were conducted using subsamples of a longitudinal national dataset from 2011-2015 containing data from CPS reports for 3,655,951 children. Measures included child, caregiver, and CPS case characteristics obtained at the time of first report in 2011. Latent class analysis of referral patterns indicated four classes of recurrence patterns: (1) 2011 unsubstantiation followed by moderate recurrence, (2) 2011 unsubstantiation followed by low recurrence, (3) 2011 substantiation followed by moderate recurrence, and (4) 2011 substantiation followed by low recurrence. Multinomial logistic regression with most likely class membership as the outcome variable indicated that domestic violence, caregiver substance abuse, and poverty were better predictors of initial substantiation status than of long-term recurrence. Prior victimization was predictive of initial substantiation status as well as long-term recurrence. Asian American race predicted low rates of recurrence. Latent class analysis of service provision revealed only two classes: a class of children who received services and a class of children who did not. Service provision partially mediated associations between initial substantiation status and five-year maltreatment recurrence, as measured by number of subsequent reports, number of subsequent substantiated reports, and number of subsequent years in foster care. Limitations are considered and implications of using predictive modeling to drive service prioritization are discussed.

The effects of parent-child relationship quality and racial socialization on reports of racial discrimination to parents are examined in an African American emerging adult population. The effects of parent-child relationship quality and racial socialization on reports of racial discrimination to parents are also considered. The influences of demographic characteristics on reports of racial discrimination are also assessed. The purpose of this study is to examine if there are relationships between cultural origin, gender, socio-economic status and reports of racial discrimination to parents. The study also aims to determine if parent-child relationship quality has an effect on whether or not black youth report experiences of racial discrimination to their parents. The study included 133 emerging adult participants between the ages of 18-25, and 33 didactic pairs of parents and their emerging adult children. Via electronic surveys, young adults answered questions about their relationships with their parents, while the parents answered questions about their racial socialization strategies. The results indicated that cultural origin, gender, and SES did not have a relationship with reports of racial discrimination to parents. However, analyses suggested that having a low or working SES has a relationship with reporting racial discrimination to parents. Findings also showed that racial socialization along with parent-child relationship quality had an effect on reports of discrimination. Implications of these findings and future directions are discussed.

Background: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has been recognized as an important target and health outcome in obesity research. The current study aimed to examine HRQoL in overweight or obese children after a 10-week primary-care–based weight management program, Parent-Led Activity and Nutrition for Healthy Living, in southern Appalachia. Methods: Sixty-seven children (ages 5–12 years) and their caregivers were recruited from four primary care clinics, two of which were randomized to receive the intervention. Caregivers in the intervention groups received two brief motivational interviewing visits and four group sessions led by providers as well as four phone follow-ups with research staff. Caregivers completed the PedsQL and demographic questionnaires at baseline and at 3, 6, and 12 months postintervention. Child height and weight were collected to determine standardized BMI. Results: Caregivers of children receiving the weight control intervention reported no statistically significant improvements in child total HRQoL, as compared to the control group, across the course of treatment (β=0.178; 95% confidence interval, −0.681, 1.037; p=0.687). Additionally, no statistically significant improvements were found across other HRQoL domains. Conclusions: Future studies examining HRQoL outcomes in primary care may consider treatment dose as well as methodological factors, such as utilization of multiple informants and different measures, when designing studies and interpreting outcomes.

The key question not addressed by the hierarchical model (Shavelson et al., 1976) is whether academic self-concept is reflected in relations with non-academic self-concept components (i.e. a between-network issue). The present study investigated the significance of physical self-concept, as a proposed mediator variable, to assess the relationship between anxiety/depression and school absence in children with chronic illness, which was hypothesized as Model A. Additionally, this research examined proposed mediator of absence in order to assess the relationship between physical self-concept and academic achievement, after controlling for academic self-concept, which was hypothesized as Model B. This study included participants from a comprehensive database of the Study of Early Child Care (SECC), by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). This study will examine the health status, psychosocial factors, attendance, and academic functioning of children in the sixth grade at the time of data collection. Findings, related to Model A, suggest that when children, regardless of whether or not they are chronically ill, experience higher degrees of anxiety/depression, they are more likely to report having higher levels of negative physical self-concept and higher levels of school absence. Findings for Model B suggested that once academic self-concept was controlled, physical self-concept, while statistically significant, accounted for little actual variance in the number of days a student was absent from school. This finding was true among all students as well as those who were not chronically ill . Specifically, this finding did not hold true for chronically ill students.

The current study examined the possible gaps in meeting the needs of children in foster care, the additional skillsets that contribute to meeting their needs, and the role child life specialists play in meeting those needs. Additionally, the study looked specifically at how child life could find a place in the nontraditional setting of foster care. Two groups of participants were recruited for the study; the first group was comprised of child life specialists. The second group included professionals who worked directly with children in foster care in some capacity. Two surveys were designed and conducted, one for each group. Generally, both groups of participants identified the following unmet needs: emotional needs, attachment needs, behavioral needs, supporting children in coping, and psychological preparation. Skillset matches for meeting these needs included experience in psychological preparation for children, knowledge in supporting coping, child development expertise, and awareness of family-centered care. These matches are closely tied to child life specialists' training. Additionally, there seems to be a lack of play in working with foster children, and this was identified as a possible gap in the system, highlighting another way child life specialists could support children in foster care. Through this study, clear ways were identified in which child life specialists could strengthen the services provided to children in foster care. These results have implications for an interdisciplinary future of the child life field.

AbstractThis chapter examines how child-care policy in Britain in the early post-war period was shaped by the publication of the 1946 Curtis report, whose recommendations were substantially implemented in the 1948 Children Act. The chapter considers both the report’s position on the administrative restructuring of children’s care and its importance in articulating standards of good practice in child-care based on broad concepts from child psychology. The report’s recommendations specifically for child migration are discussed as well as the different ways in which voluntary societies involved in this work engaged with the Curtis Committee on this issue. Whilst strengthening controls over child migration to a limited extent, the subsequent 1948 Children Act introduced separate obligations for the emigration of children from the care of local authorities compared to voluntary societies, thus creating a two-tier administrative system that was to have significant consequences for many child migrants.

This is a descriptive study, with a qualitative approach, of the case study type. The information contained in this chapter was obtained by reviewing the medical records, interviewing the patient and talking to medical and nursing professionals at the Hospital de Emergência e Trauma Dom Luiz Gonzaga Fernandes, located in Campina Grande, Paraíba. The patient L. S. F., female, 3 years old, born in Areial - PB, arrived at the Hospital presenting a convulsive crisis that lasted for 15 days, having a history of headache, vomiting, intermittent fever for more than 1 year. Upon admission, a CT scan of the head was performed, which showed an expansive lesion with signs of bleeding, with acute hydrocephalus. Upon hospitalization through the Systematization of Nursing Assistance (SAE), it was possible to diagnose her with anxiety, and for that, a prescription was made with the interventions of administering analgesics, observing vital signs and keeping the bed rails high, due to young age. Subsequently, after being assisted by the neurosurgeon, he concluded that the tumor was a Thalamo-Mesencephalic, requiring a surgical procedure, which subsequently was performed uneventfully. The patient's brain tumor was taken for biopsy, for the opinion, and whether it is benign or malignant, the child will start chemotherapy, radiotherapy and similar treatment. The case reported and publications raised bring to light the discussion of the role of nursing in a complex situation such as the diagnosis of a brain tumor accompanied by hydrocephalus. It also ratifies the importance of the multidisciplinary team in this service, in which medical, nursing, psychology and physiotherapy teams must “walk” together, aiming at the well-being of the patient and his family.

cultural and community aspects of the family’s and child’s experience. Though the effects of each of these variables may be hard to separate, distinct elements of each can be seen in the three examples used to illustrate this point. The common theme of the three case studies demonstrates that neither the community ecology nor cultural archetypes provide sufficiently satisfactory explanations for the everyday behaviors of the family members. Rather, the common denominator involves the context in which community and cultural influences interact to determine the outcome. When the context is one that supports both sets of influences, the families of young children are not in conflict. Rather, the context supports the developmental goals of the family in ways that are beneficial to everyone –child, family, and community.

Introduction: Meningoencephalitis caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a rare neurological entity, most often related to the latent reactivation of thevirus associated with immunosuppression. The clinic varies between encephalitis, meningitis, cerebellitis, neuritis and transverse myelitis. The prognosis is good, with 85% of patients returning to baseline levels. Case report: We attend to a 11-month-old male patient, proper neuropsychomotor development, with reports of fever and odynophagia, without improvement with antibiotic therapy. He had a focal epileptic seizure. Upon admission, he presented a new similar event, with control after use of diazepam and intravenous phenobarbital. At the neurological examination carried out after improving the level of consciousness, the patient was alert. He presented axial hypotonia, dystonic posture in flexion of the right upper limb, with preserved strength. He showed no meningeal signs. The cerebrospinal fluid revealed 61 mg/dL of glucose, 57 mg/dL of proteins and 65/mm³ of leukocytes (90% of lymphocytes). Acyclovir, ceftriaxone, and dexamethasone were started, with improvement. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed: FLAIR hyper signal injury, with diffusion restriction, in the left caudate nucleus, left lentiform and ipsilateral anterior midbrain region. Electroencephalogram with diffuse attenuation of baseline electrical activity. The main diagnostic hypothesis was meningoencephalitis secondary to EBV infection, with confirmatory PCR-DNA. Conclusion: The report illustrates the need for attention to a rare infectious etiology in atypical presentation of meningoencephalitis.
