ABSTRACTThis investigation deals with the effect of cooling rate on the formation of carbide nodular iron alloyed with 2.2 % Cr and equivalent carbon near 4.3%. In the experimental stage three Y-blocks of 1.5, 3 and 5.5 cm in thickness are poured in green sand molds. Castings are sectioned in two positions (wall and center samples) in order to determine the characteristics of the precipitated carbides (fraction, distribution and relative size) from surface to center and from the bottom to the top of the castings applying quantitative analysis of images. The obtained results show the presence of carbides in all of the castings. Finer carbides are obtained in the thinnest casting but with a high variation between the samples located in the wall and center. All castings present massive carbides in the last freezing zone (LFZ). Therefore the cooling rate associated with casting thick has an important effect on the fraction and distribution of carbides.

Al-Cu alloy castings are obtained using centrifugal casting. The regularity of mechanical property gradient distribution of Al-Cu alloy castings with the same centrifugal radius at different positions is investigated. The result shows that the tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and microscope hardness exhibit the following gradient distribution characteristic — high on both sides and low on the center. The trend of mechanical property gradient distribution of Al-Cu alloy increases with the increase in the rotation speed. Moreover, the mechanical properties of casting centerline two sides have asymmetry. The reason is that the grain size of casting centerline two sides and Al2Cu phase and Cu content change correspondingly.

Fluid convection during solidification of castings will influence the final structures of the castings. A vertical cylindrical casting set-up has been designed to provide two zones of solidification simultaneously with two moving fronts directionally upward and directionally downward, respectively. This two zone directional solidification casting was composed of a cylindrical Furan sand mold with a water chilled center hole block at the center of the casting. Experimentally it was observed that the cooling rates at different locations of the downward zone were much more even than those of the upward one and this is considered to be the result of a more even temperature distribution along the downward front moving zone due to stronger fluid convection. Fluid convection tends to mix up the liquid and results in a more even temperature distribution and a lower degree of segregation of the element molybdenum which has a strong tendency to segregate to the carbide in ductile iron. The characteristics of the matrix microstructure and the growing direction of carbide of this directionally solidified ductile iron has been investigated with SEM and EBSD techniques.

Development of integrated database including casting shapes with their casting design, technical knowledge, and thermophysical properties of the casting alloys were introduced in the present study. For the shape database, a number of casting products are scanned by using by using industrial computer tomography and compiled to the shape database. Each shape data in the database has also parametric 3D modeling data, not only the product but also its casting design. If casting engineer want to design new casting, similar casting shape with casting design can be easily retrieved from the shape database, and easily modified and adapted to the new casting. Technical knowledge of the various casting processes and their manufacturing process of the castings were compiled and the search engine for the knowledge was developed. Database of thermophysical properties of the casting alloys were obtained by the experimental study or calculation based on CALPHAD approach, and the properties were used for the in-house computer simulation of casting process. The databases were linked with intelligent casting expert system developed in e-design center, KITECH. It is expected that the databases can help non casting experts to devise the casting and its process. Various examples of the application by using the databases were shown in the present study.

Centrifugal castings are produced by pouring liquid metal into rotating moulds. It solidifies under the influence of centrifugal forces, directed from the center to the periphery of the mould on account of mould rotation, and exhibits directionality in solidification which helps to eliminate voids and discontinuities in the resultant casting, usually encountered in gravity castings. Also, a compositional gradient is sat up in the melt which can be monitored, to produce functionally graded materials (FGMs) of choice with multi-functionality. The pouring rate, pouring temperature, mould temperature, and mould material can be suitably selected and altered in isolation or in combination, to generate a desired thermal gradient in the melt which decides its cooling rate. The cooling rate of the melt has the greatest impact on the grain structure of the casting. On the other hand, the grain structure of the casting governs its mechanical performance and decides the suitability for any specific end-use. Thus, different processing factors influence the characteristics of centrifugal casting. In the present article, a sincere attempt is made to analyze the effect of these factors and to enumerate the role played by each one of these factors in deciding the centrifugal casting characteristics.

GCr15 bearing steel exhibits comparatively serious center macro-segregation in the continuous casting of bloom with the increase of casting speed. In the present work, the influence of complex electromagnetic stirring (M + F-EMS) and mechanical soft reduction (MSR) on the center macro-segregation in the continuous casting of 220 × 260 mm blooms of GCr15 bearing steel have been comparatively investigated to increase casting speed in order to ensure a good internal quality. Based on numerical simulation and experiments, M + F-EMS and MSR have been comprehensively evaluated and compared by combination of industrial trials. The results show that center carbon segregation first decreases and then increases with the increase of casting speed in both processes without optimization. For M + F-EMS process, when casting speed increases from 0.75 to 0.85 m · min−1, the average degree of center carbon segregation decreases from 1.2 ∼ 1.26 to 1.18 ∼ 1.25 by asymmetrical optimization; with regard to combination of M + F-EMS and MSR process, when casting speed increases from 0.75 to 0.9 m · min−1, the average degree of center carbon segregation decreases from 1.2 ∼ 1.26 to 1.08 ∼ 1.1 and the solute element distribution becomes homogeneous by optimization. In comparison, significant reduction of the center macro-segregation with the increase of casting speed can be achieved for combination of M + F-EMS and MSR process, however, it is infeasible for M + F-EMS process in the present technology situation.

According to the usage of vehicle radar antenna pedestal center frame, this article analyzes and compares the structure characteristic of welding and casting. We decide to adopt the casting structure and use special casting material ductile iron QT450-10. And we describe the casting material ductile iron QT450-10. Based on the center frame of using conditions, we analyze the deformation and stress of center frame by the finite element analysis software. The design is in line with the material allowable requirements and to meet the requirements of the system stiffness.

The changes of roll casting microstructure under different casting conditions on experimental casting machine was studied, which showed that solidification microstructure is different with different casting speed and thickness. When the casting speed is 1.3m/min,the thickness of strip is 6mm, coarse columnar grain dominates the solidification structure; when it continuously increases to 4m/min, the thickness of strip is 3mm, aluminum strip shows as hybrid organization with columnar grains in two sides and small equiaxed grains in the center; when the casting speed is over 12m/min,the thickness of strip is 1.75mm, columnar grains all convert into equiaxed grains in solidification structure. The deformation microstructures are different with the different casting speed and thickness of strip. When the casting speed is 0.9m/min, the thickness of strip is 6mm, typical processing flow lines come into being along longitudinal direction and transverse direction shows as squashed grains without re-crystallization. When the casting speed is 5.4m/min, the thickness of strip is 2.5mm, microstructure of aluminum strip becomes chevron organization from columnar crystal, there is a condensate in the center of aluminum strip, and the deformation of outer metal is more serious than inner, incomplete dynamic recrystallized grains come into being in the outer metal of the aluminum strip.

The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between the size and the distribution of microstructural constituents and their cooling rate, as well as the correlation between the mechanical properties and the cooling rate of AlSi9Cu3 aluminum alloy when cast in high-pressure die casting (HPDC) conditions. In other words, the ultimate goal of the research was to determine the mechanical properties for a casting at different cooling rates. Castings with different wall thicknesses were chosen, and different cooling rates were assumed for each one. Castings from industrial technological practice were systematically chosen, and probes were extracted from those castings for the characterization of their mechanical properties. Special non-standard cylinders were created on which compressive tests were carried out. The uniqueness of this research lies in the fact that the diameters of the designed cylinders were in direct correlation to the actual wall thickness of the castings. This is important because the solidification of metal in the die cavity is complex, in that the cooling rates are higher on the surface of the casting than in the center. Local in-casting cooling rates were determined using numerical simulations. It was discovered that with increasing cooling rates from 60 K/s to 125 K/s the values for strength at 5% deformation increased on average from 261 MPa to 335 MPa.

A heavy section ductile casting (HSDIC) with dimensions of Φ590 mm×800 mm was prepared. Cooling curves at the center, at 85 mm from the center, at 170 mm from the center and at 255 mm from the center of the casting were recorded and analyzed. The results show that the precipitation of initial graphite, nucleation of eutectic cell and mass eutectic reaction at 255 mm from the center were all earlier than the other three locations. Moreover, it takes the longest time of 53 minutes of recalescence at 170 mm from the center with the highest temperature rise of 7 °C, though the cooling rate at this location is not the lowest in the casting, the mechanical properties are the worst. In addition, the largest amount of chunky graphite appears at 170 mm from the center.

The need for a state of the art advanced National Casting Technology Centre (NCTC) has been widely supported throughout industry and recognised as an important facilitator in the growth of the foundry industry. This initiative also aligns itself with the government's Advanced Manufacturing Technology Strategy (AMTS), which is an implementation strategy in support of the South African government's Integrated Manufacturing Strategy (IMS) and National R&D Strategy (NRDS). The AMTS aims at supporting and developing the downstream high technology manufacturing industry, inter alia through the aerospace, automotive and metals sectors.
In light of the above and in an effort to retain and expand the current national skills, expertise and facilities in advanced casting technologies, the National Product Development Centre at the CSIR has initiated a process of establishing a National Casting Technology Centre (NCTC). The establishment of the NCTC provides a supportive technology platform for the Advanced Metals Initiative (AMI), which was launched in 2003.
The primary objective of the NCTC is to preserve and expand the national expertise and capabilities in cast metals manufacturing by supporting the local casting industry with process development, technology transfer and skills enhancement in order to increase their global competitiveness.

Метою проекту є визначення технологічних параметрів та складання опису виробництва виливка; розроблення і обґрунтування етапів приготування рідкого сплаву; технологічне планування і проектування ливарного цеху. Розроблений технологічний процес виготовлення виливка може бути рекомендований як типовий при виробництві чавуних виливків середньої складності в умовах дрібносерійного і великосерійного виробництва. Попередніми розрахунками економічних показників прийнятих проектних рішень установлено економічну доцільність використання запропонованих процесів. Розроблено організаційну схему роботи ливарного цеху та заходи, спрямовані на усунення небезпечних та шкідливих чинників.
The design object is an iron foundry with the development of technological processes for the production of castings of various masses by casting into one-off sand-clay forms. The aim of the project is to determine the technological parameters and compile a description of the production of the casting; development and justification of the stage of preparation of the liquid alloy; technological planning and design of a foundry. The technological process of casting manufacturing has been developed can be recommended as typical for the production of iron castings of medium complexity in small-scale and large-scale production. Preliminary calculations of the economic indicators of the adopted design decisions established the economic feasibility of using the proposed processes. An organizational chart of the foundry’s work and measures aimed at eliminating dangerous and harmful factors have been developed.
Объект проектирования - чугунолитейный цех с разработкой технологических процессов изготовления отливок различной массы литьем в разовые песчано-глинистые формы. Целью проекта является определение технологических параметров и составления описания производства отливки; разработка и обоснование этапе приготовлении жидкого сплава; технологическое планирование и проектирование литейного цеха. Разработан технологический процесс изготовления отливки может быть рекомендован как типичный при производстве чугунных отливок средней сложности в условиях мелкосерийного и крупносерийного производства. Предварительным расчетам экономических показателей принятых проектных решений установлено экономическую целесообразность использования предложенных процессов. Разработана организационная схема работы литейного цеха и меры, направленные на устранение опасных и вредных факторов.

Social emulation stimulated the demand for clothing with the rapid generalisation of certain types of dress in given social circles. Beginning with this birth of fashion in the 16th century, the 18th century witnessed a revolution in consumption. Material culture had a public projection, and appearance and luxury became variables of civilization. In this methodological framework, and using tutorship accounts and inventories (from the Renaissance and Enlightened periods, and from rural and courtesan contexts), this paper aims to examine cloths and accessories that made a difference, with consideration to age, and gender. The evolution of this process in Castile is compared with that in other western European countries in terms of innovation, availability, intercultural contacts and social aspirations.

This chapter addresses income inequality by offering new evidence based on the Ensenada Cadastre, a unique database on Castilian households circa 1750. We find that inequality in 18th-century Spain was substantial, especially in urban and/or highly populated areas. There was also a positive – but somewhat weaker – relationship not only between inequality and per capita income but also between inequality and poverty. We posit that extreme economic inequality was likely responsible for numerous episodes of social conflict. Finally, the extent of formalized charity and social spending was less than in other Western European regions.

Host resigned his cabinet position in 2005 but agreed to continue as chair of the Louisville Arena Task Force (LATF). Its members agreed that Louisville needed a new arena but disagreed on the location. “Papa” John Schnatter, University of Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich, and Mayor Jerry Abramson all held strong opinions about the best site. The LATF eventually selected a riverfront location, with Schnatter casting the lone dissenting vote. Host then became chair of the Louisville Arena Authority (LAA), working with Louisville civil rights leaders to ensure that minorities were hired on the construction project and overseeing an extremely complex bond issue. Host and the LAA guided the construction project through to completion, and the KFC Yum! Center opened in 2010. Financing of the arena faced some initial criticism, but fears of default have proved to be unfounded. The KFC Yum! Center provides Kentucky with one of the best venues for sports and entertainment in the country.

This chapter focuses on the main show in each episode. Here the lynching case from Maryland takes center stage, mainly because the rich detail that the source materials provide enables one to see people moving in and out of different roles in a given moment and over time. To put this display in comparative perspective, the chapter also discusses violent displays in Rwanda and Bosnia. Both pale in comparison to the lynching in terms of their brutality and extralethality. And yet, these less-spectacular displays, the chapter argues, still express notions of power and belonging. Here, the chapter develops and applies a theory of casting. This theory is less about individual nobodies becoming somebodies and more about the diversity of people who help to constitute a violent display as such, including those who happen on the scene unwittingly or unwillingly. The casting process does not guarantee anyone a particular role; some might try but fail to grab a starring role, for example. What it ensures is that everyone becomes part of the show, whether they want to be or not.

The Garvey movement was at once an end and a beginning. Although very much a product of its time – the immediate post-World War I era – Garveyism was an end in that it summarized much of the thought and struggle of nineteenth-century pan-Africanism and black nationalism. Marcus Garvey, not so much the man as the metaphor, and the United Negro Improvement Association, not so much the institution as the inspiration, sealed up a certain tradition (which included Toussaint Louverture’s Haitian Revolution and black revivalists) in the movement for black liberation in the modern world. At the same time, Garveyism was also a beginning, casting a long shadow on contemporary and subsequent movements against colonialism and white supremacy throughout the black world, including phenomena such as the Moorish Science Temple and Rastafari. This chapter places Garveyism at the center of a narrative spanning from the emergence of pan-Africanism in the eighteenth century to the Ethiopian crisis of 1935.

This introductory chapter discusses the papers presented at the Center on Capitalism and Society conference held in the fall of 2010. The conference, which commemorated the fortieth anniversary of the Phelps microfoundations volume, featured researchers engaged in developing alternatives to the Rational Expectations Hypothesis (REH). The Phelps volume provided radically new accounts of the comovements of macroeconomic aggregates, including inflation and unemployment, while casting serious doubt on the validity of policy analysis based on then-popular Keynesian macroeconometric models. This chapter considers the various efforts to reinvent macroeconomics that were discussed at the Phelps conference, with a particular focus on non-REH alternatives and their implications for economic analysis. Topics include nonroutine change and imperfect knowledge, expectational coordination and market volatility, autonomous expectations in long swings in asset prices, and the natural rate of unemployment.

Iron cast machining is nowadays preceded by the process of marking out, ascertaining appropriate casting precision and size of machined surface surpluses. The procedure entails delineating (etching) boundaries of the nominal machining surpluses upon the raw cast surfaces. Their size, standardized according to the ISO 8062 certificate, depends on maximal cast dimensions and the casting method applied. The characteristic machining surplus size of the hereby investigated typical industrial casts ranges between 6 and 8 mm. As casting accuracy is determined by individual foundry standards, the actual machining surplus size values commonly differ from the nominal ones. Thus, in order to ascertain appropriate machining of a given cast, variable surplus distribution is warranted, resulting in actual surplus size values of 2–12 mm. Inherent to the iron casting procedure are variable hardness values within the casting wall cross-section, with the outer wall surface (directly contingent to the mold that rapidly cools the cast) characterized by the highest hardness value, decreasing incrementally towards its center. Verification of surface hardness values takes place after machining and involves selected work surfaces (e.g. base areas of a runner block). Excessive machining of oversized surpluses within the verified areas results in insufficient hardness of their surfaces. Bearing the above considerations in mind, optimization of surplus distribution was attempted, relating to most advantageous hardness values of selected cast work surfaces. The investigation was conducted under industrial conditions, upon milling center framework casts. The selected work surfaces were processed gradually; the surface hardness was measured after each machining step. Results thus obtained were implemented for further machining surplus optimization of equivalent casts.

Ponseti technique is a common non-surgical treatment based on serial manipulation and casting for idiopathic infant clubfoot. We have used three dimensional MRI throughout the treatment, to investigate the effect of the casts on the clubfoot of a one week old (at the beginning of treatment) male with unilateral right idiopathic congenital clubfoot deformity. A total of 21 MRI scans were obtained during weekly serial manipulation and corrective casting. Changes in shape, volume, ossification, and positional relationships of the hind foot anlagen were studied. We found that immediate shape changes occur following casting, particularly in the talus and the navicular, and when after one week the cast is removed the anlagen do not elastically return to their original shape and position prior to casting. Furthermore, the growth rate of some of the clubfoot anlagen, in particular the talus, was faster than normal. A faster ossification was observed in the calcaneus and cuboid. Results also showed correction in parallelism of calcaneus and talus in the anteroposterior plane, minor correction of this parallelism in the lateral view necessitating a heel cord tenotomy, and correction of the medial rotation of calcaneus. Under this treatment changes in talar neck angle yielded a decreasing trend. The navicular moved with respect to the head of the talus from a medial to a lateral position. Relative to the talar body it shifted laterally. Also the geometrical center of talus ossific nucleus was noted to move towards the center of the whole anlagen suggesting that the ossification extends in the opposite direction from the head of the talus. It was concluded that the mechanism of adaptation to the casting loads was quick deformation immediately upon cast application followed by adaptation to the new shape in the cast. These were qualitative findings. It was also concluded that most of the correction occurred during the initial treatment period, primarily during the first and second weeks (1). On the quantitative end, it was confirmed that MRI and computer techniques can be utilized to ascertain and quantify the abnormalities which were impossible to well identify otherwise. MRI based studies have powerful potential to provide helpful information on the choice of treatment as well as guidance throughout. For instance, it may therefore be possible in the present case to shorten the treatment time without adverse effects on the outcome.

Functionally Graded Materials are high performance composite materials, in which physical and/or chemical properties of these material structures are graded in the several directions. Centrifugal solid-particle method is one of the effective fabrication methods by use of centrifugal casting devices. The casting mold that includes reinforcement particle and molten metal are centrifuged and particles move in the mixture due to density differences of these materials. However, there is no information on the particle motions. The aim of the present study is to disclose on suspension particle motion in the axially rotating drum. The particle velocity of the circular disk is measured by PTV (Particle Tracking Velocimetry) method and is theoretically predicted by BBO (Basset-Boussinesq-Ossen) equation. It is found that (1) each particle motion is affected by the rotating speed, (2) the measured velocity is compared with theoretical result, and (3) when the particle moves in the Stokes’ regime, its velocity is linearly increased with the distance from the center of the drum and this trend is intensified with an increase in the rotating speed.

Transportation Technology Center, Inc. (TTCI) has investigated various nondestructive inspection (NDI) methods to determine if they are capable of reliably inspecting side frames, bolsters, knuckles, and couplers. The NDI methods used for this investigation include dry and wet (fluorescent) magnetic particle, liquid penetrant, alcohol wipe, visual, ultrasonic (pulse-echo and phased array), and radiography. Inspection results from all methods were used to determine which methods produced repeatable results. From the initial inspection analysis, TTCI engineers determined that the magnetic particle inspection method is the most capable for detecting defects in railroad castings. Further investigation of the magnetic particle technique was completed to develop reliable inspection methods for use on bolsters, side frames, knuckles, and couplers. Each of the inspection techniques have been used for inspections in the field. Using the results of the field tests, procedures were developed by TTCI and submitted to the Association of American Railroads’ (AAR) Coupling Systems and Truck Castings Committee for review and implementation. The inspection procedures can be used by manufacturers, railroads, and car repair shops. Limitations of the inspection procedures include the amount of time necessary to perform the inspection and the reliability of detecting certain types of defects below the surface of the casting. Although these limitations exist, the procedures developed by TTCI are expected to improve the quality of in-service castings and reduce the number of train partings and derailments due to broken or cracked components.

Continuous casting is the process of solidifying molten metal to produce different products such as billet, bloom, or slab. This process can be formulated mathematically in terms of conflicting objectives including productivity, yield, quality and production costs to satisfy sets of constraints such as oscillation mark depth, metallurgical length and center line segregation. The objectives are conflicting in the sense that, if the productivity is increased, there is a reduction in other performance measures. These performance specifications are greatly influenced by operating conditions such as casting speed, superheat, mold oscillation frequency, and secondary cooling conditions. The process of identifying the set points for the continuous casting operation is iterative and expensive. The uncertainties inherent in modeling the phenomena computationally behooves exploration of the solution space to determine the quality of the solution and gain insight. In this paper, a method to explore the solution space is introduced. The method includes weight sensitivity and constraint sensitivity analysis. This analysis allows a designer to ascertain to what extent the solution is insensitive to uncertainties inherent in the modeling of the decision problem. This is a crucial step towards determining robust solutions for performance measures. The utility of the method is illustrated in providing decision support for the continuous casting operation in presence of variability in the operating parameters and conflicting end requirements, such as productivity and quality parameters. This method can be instantiated for exploring the solution space for ladle, tundish, rolling and annealing and thereby facilitating the exploration of the solution space for critical unit operations associated with steel product manufacturing. This development has the potential to reduce the number of plant trials necessary to determine the set points for manufacturing a new product mix with a new grade of steel using the existing equipment in a steel mill. The focus in this paper is on the method and not the results per se.

A new experimental configuration for the casting of metal matrix composites (MMCs) using Al-4.5 wt pct Cu has been used to obtain finer microstructures around the fiber reinforcement. The new configuration allows fibers to be extended out of the mold and cooled by a heat sink. By doing so, solidification can be sped up and more primary alpha-aluminum phase can be formed on the surface of the fibers. It is believed that this can lead to improved material properties of the composite. A simulation study of the solidification process has been carried out to examine the effects of different processing parameters on the cooling rate during the casting of MMC. Among these parameters include the pouring temperature of the liquid melt, sink temperature, fiber length extended out of the mold, fiber conductivity, mold initial temperature, mold conductivity, applied pressure, mold wall thickness, and fiber bundle diameter. Selected simulation results are compared with the available experimental data obtained from the UWM Center for Composites.
