This article focuses on the history and reception of the ex-Casa del Fascio in Predappio, from the end of the Second World War to the current plans for its restoration and reuse as a study centre and a museum of Fascism. Taking into account changes in legislative, political, and cultural contexts, the article proposes an approach to the legacy of Fascist architecture in Italy based not just on its ideological charge, but also on cultural and political shifts, changes in legislation, and the complex relationships between the bodies in charge of the preservation and management of public heritage. The recent plans put forward by the town administration to restore the building and turn it into a museum of Fascism have reopened the debate on the heritage of Fascism and the ex-Casa del Fascio has now become one of the most conspicuous emblems of Italy’s uneasy relationship with its Fascist past and of the problems of dealing with the material legacy of the Fascist regime.

The research here presented is a critical appraisal of some restoration works carried out between the two World Wars in a particular geographic context, which is the Romagna district, in the Northeast of Italy. Starting from two case studies (the Casa del Fascio in Forlì and the Malatesta Library in Cesena) and thanks to the analysis of bibliographical sources, archival documents, and drawings, this research aims at understanding how broader and major theories about architectural restoration are articulated in peripheral background. What emerges are unexpected results: Late and deeply contextualized operations, strongly linked with the national panorama but at the same time chasing for the revival of their own history.

A quantitative-qualitative study was performed to describe outcomes and experiences of women who gave birth in an out-of-hospital setting in Rome, Italy, between 2016 and 2018. A retrospective observational study was carried out through the collection of clinical and healthcare data of 96 women assisted in these 3 years. Among them 9 were transferred to hospital during labour. The main outcomes of the out-of-hospital deliveries (n = 87) were: intact perineum and no third- or fourth-degree perineal tear in 44,8% of cases, delayed cord clamping in 100% of cases (of which 26.4% were lotus birth) and exclusive breastfeeding in 94.3% of cases at 7 days after delivery and 93.3% at 3 and 6 months. The qualitative phase was conducted on 15 women and involved focus groups and in-depth interviews. It emerged that the choice to give birth in an out-of-hospital setting was mainly due to either the couple’s respect for birth physiology and intimacy or a previous negative experience of hospital birth.

The present study aims to delineate Montessori education relying on the review of current literature. Given the background of early childhood education, this method dates back to the early 19th century, and the most influential educator in this method is undoubtedly Maria Montessori. She is an educator having devoted her life to improving the education system for children and is the first female medical doctor in Italy. The years characterized by wars and poverty led her to engage in observation of the education of mentally retarded children and, thus, laid the foundations of an influential education model across the world. She opened her very first school, the Casa Dei Bambini (Children’s Home), in Rome in 1907. Today, her education model can be considered among the ones preferred the most and is adopted within both private and public schools in our country.

- A large number of studies have aimed at outlining the personality profile of sex offenders; however, due to the heterogenousness of such crime and their perpetrators, this task is very difficult. This study attempts to highlight the different types of sex offenders, their personality profiles, their possible defence mechanisms. Methods: Subjects of this study are male prisoners detained in a special section of the district penitentiary in Velletri (Rome, Italy). All subjects (N=8) were convicted of sexual crimes towards children and/or women. Their mean age is 51. Prisoners on remand were not included in this study. The adopted tools are: a Grid for collecting the anamnesis and the information regarding the crime; the Big Five Questionnaire; the Sesamo. Results and conclusions: Results proved the difficulties to outline a personality profile of sex offenders, but pointed out some common psycho-sexual aspects. These aspects were probably related to the prison situation of the subjects. Key words: sex offenders; personality profile; district penitentiary.

Abstract. The architectural and urbanistic events of the Reconstruction in the post-World War II period in Italy are still today a topic of great relevance that deserves to be examined in depth, especially in relation to some examples of historical-testimonial value present, in particular, in the U.N.R.R.A. Casas (1947–62) development/project and the INA Casa Plan (1949–63). The revision of the principles of the modern movement in many construction experiences, established a sort of break in favor of an attempt to reinterpret the architectural tradition in a contemporary and local key so as to respond to the needs of local communities, through the use of a moderate and authentic language that represented them. In this sense, the trend of Italian Architectural Neorealism constitutes an event and an experience of great interest. The re-reading of that season deserves to be examined in depth through the analysis of two of the most emblematic cases: the “Tiburtino” INA Casa district in Rome (1949–54) and the “La Martella” U.N.R.R.A. Casas rural village in Matera (1951–55). In the two case studies, the dichotomy between urban-rural is underlined by the experimentation of new urban practices from an organicist approach, innovative typological aggregations and the search for a common language that would adopt the canons of the vernacular tradition with the efficiency of pre-war functionalism. The differences, but also the similarities, between the two cases will be analyzed in this contribution both from an urbanistic and typological-architectural point of view, in reference both to the different design approaches (some of the designers are involved in both experiences) and to the transformations of the two settlements in recent decades. The aim of the research work is to propose hypotheses for a sustainable recovery of the settlements.

Mithraea, religious Roman buildings, are very common in Italian archeological sites. There are sixteen in Ostia Antica (Rome, Italy)The poor state of conservation, due to the intrinsic environmental conditions, characterized them: they consist of open-air museums and caves simultaneously. These places of worship are characterized by the presence of heterogeneous materials, such as wall building materials (bricks and mortars) and others used for furnishings and fittings. This increases the risk of accelerated damage because the materials ‘rheology is different. Here, a full petrographic-mineralogical characterization with polarized light microscopy (PLM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDS) and isotopic analysis (δ13C, δ18O) is carried out on materials like travertine, marble, pumice, ceramic, and wall-building materials in “Casa di Diana” Mithraeum (Ostia Antica). Their characterization gives provenance information as well as conservation and restoration purposes. The prevalence of siliciclastic or carbonate components discriminates between red and yellow bricks, as well as different textures and minerals in the aggregate of the red ones. The mortars are typically pozzolanic, and the aggregate is mostly made up of black and red pozzolanic clasts. In the altar, apse, and aedicule, which constitute the principal place of the Mithraeum, a variety of materials used for the ornamental purpose are represented by pumices, travertine, marble, and limestone. The altar material, catalogued as marble, resulted in being a limestone coated with a white pigment.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore how comprehensive the management of common repairs in the nineteenth-century urban housing in Edinburgh is in the European context. The city experienced a variety of approaches since the 1970s to repairs of exposed decorative elements and the envelope, whose condition is exacerbated by inappropriate interventions and climate change. Design/methodology/approach The debate is framed in practice in Western Europe where economy, administration and conservation cultures have been similar since the 1970s: property manager (Glasgow), role of housing agency (Venice), Monumentenwacht’s periodical inspections for subscribers (Flanders), tax incentives (France, Italy, Spain), linking management and procurement (Libretto Casa, Rome) and the emerging concept of preventive conservation. Findings Edinburgh has a holistic and technically rich management experience, with a strong educational focus, which shows the immense volume of work required, hampered by the fragmentation of ownership and the small size of the repair industry. Practice can improve in Edinburgh and Europe through increased awareness, tax incentives, regular inspections, legal recognition of the need for maintenance and stepping-up the debate at national, European and political level, towards preventive conservation approaches. Research limitations/implications The study profited from direct knowledge of the approach in Edinburgh and other areas, but little has been published on each area outside the local level, so appraisal depended on language knowledge. Originality/value This first reading of practice at the European level may be of value to the national agencies referred to, for policy development or European initiatives.

Abstract Guercino’s fresco of Aurorain the Casino Ludovisi in Rome depicts the charioteer Dawn ushering in a virile Day to dispel the furtive Night. Guercino’s Dawn, commissioned by the cardinal nephew of the newly elected Pope Gregory XV (1621-3), celebrates the beginning of his Bolognese compatriot Alessandro Ludovisi’s pontificate as a new golden age, while it marked the high point of baroque painting among the Bolognese school in Rome-Annibale Carracci, Guido Reni, Francesco Albani, Lanfranco, Domenichino, as well as the young Guercino himself. Dawn, boldly streaking across the sky above the pope’s casa,a house in the sense both of family and of property where social relationships and power politics were one, chases away the darkndess.

Different combinations of conditions, circumstances and historical moments trigger festivals. One of the common denominators that characterises their origins and success over the course of time is the role of their founders. The birth of Romaeuropa Festival, provides us with a significant case study of visionary leadership. The story of this festival began in 1986, just ten years after the creation of the Estate Romana (Roman summer), a programme of cultural events invented by architect Renato Nicolini, the Rome City Council politician in charge of cultural affairs from 1976-1985, which brought life to the city’s streets and squares each summer with music, dance, theatre and film. During that period Rome, for the first time since the end of World War Two, was governed by a leftwing administration, led by mayors belonging to the Italian Communist Party (PCI). These were also the dark years of the Red Brigades and Fascist terrorism that bloodied Italy. The Estate Romana was conceived as an umbrella event, which was to bring together many independent initiatives from theatre, music, cinema, art and literature and smaller individual festivals, and which soon became a symbol of the rebirth of Rome and of the revitalisation of the deeply scarred city. Nicolini’s idea was to enable people to regain possession of public spaces, especially in the historic city centre, by encouraging them to engage with the highly ghettoised suburbs, by fostering democratic access and participation in cultural activities. The initiative also sought to integrate different cultural forms and languages into its programme and to appeal to a variety of audiences.

This chapter discusses the importance of the ‘national-patriotic’ symbology and expressive codes for all the competitors in the Italian political arena during the Cold War. In the struggle between pro-Soviet and anti-Communist fronts, both sides used Italian national myths and iconic unifying symbols, such as the image of Garibaldi, in order to present themselves as the ‘true’ Fatherland against their competitors, identified as the ‘fifth column’ and the ‘servants’ of ‘foreign imperialists’. However, after the disaster of fascist expansionism and the horrors of a war nobody wanted to repeat, in any case the claim of a renovated decisive role in the world could not be presented according to the words of militaristic nationalism. It was rather conjured with the promotion of peace against the menace of a new invasion and a subsequent global conflict.

Abstract This chapter considers the changes in Fascist imperial romanità in the late 1930s, during the Second World War, and in the immediate aftermath of Italy’s defeat and the loss of its African colonies. The memory of ancient Rome began to be more aggressively co-opted by racist ideologies. In particular, the Punic Wars were forcefully represented as a clash between the Aryan Roman empire and the ‘Semitic’ Carthage. This chapter takes a number of articles from the racist journal La Difesa della Razza as case studies, and looks at how Italy represented itself as a new Roman empire in exhibitions planned for the 1940s. With the outbreak of the Second World War, the conflict was seen by some Fascist Italian idealogues as a Fourth Punic War. The chapter concludes by looking at how proponents of empire made sense of Italy’s defeat, with reference to Rome’s empire in Africa.

The pressures of fame are wearing on Barbara as she attempts to balance numerous career commitments with being a good wife and mother. This chapter is largely devoted to Barbara’s role in The Eternal City (1923), a film involving both her unprecedented trip to Italy and a leading role among a stellar cast. Details pertaining to the film’s production, plot, and critical reception are addressed, including the cast and crew’s entanglements with fascist leader and Italian prime minister Benito Mussolini. That Barbara’s European trip is also intended to be her honeymoon with Jack—and that it isn’t the romantic fairy tale film magazines purport it to be—also factors into the chapter’s content. The chapter closes with Barbara’s attainment of her fondest childhood aspiration, her official induction into stardom’s ranks: Arthur Sawyer presents her with a long-term contract for starring pictures to be produced by him and distributed by First National.
