Research on agrammatism has revealed that the nature of linguistic impairment is systematic and interpretable. Non-canonical sentences are more impaired than those of canonical sentences. Previous studies on Japanese (Hiroshi et al. 2004; Chujo 1983; Tamaoka et al. 2003; Nakayama 1995) report that aphasic patients take longer Response Time (RT) and make more mistakes in producing non-canonical sentences compared to that of canonical sentences. The present research investigates the production impairments of canonical and non-canonical sentences cross-linguistically focusing on Bangla, Japanese, German and English aphasic patients. While Bangla, Japanese, German have relatively flexible word order, and hence allow freer phrasal movement, English exemplifies less freedom in word order patterns, and does not allow as much movement as the former three. We hypothesized that Bangla agrammatic patients would have more impairments in producing non-canonical sentences than those of canonical counterparts, while the production of canonical sentences is not completely devoid of impairments too. Primary data were collected from Bangla agrammatic patients, and secondary data from Japanese, German and English were exploited for cross-linguistic comparison. The findings show that Bangla agrammatic speakers have severe impairments in producing passive sentences, although the production of active ones are not completely devoid of impairments. The cross-linguistic comparison of the findings implies that the production of Bangla agrammatism tend to be similar to other agrammatic production and the production of non-canonical sentences are more difficult than those of canonical sentences cross-linguistically.

Abstract This article seeks to survey the movement of canonical theism as a way of introducing it to a Pentecostal readership for the purpose of establishing possible links that could be beneficial for both groups. In particular, the essay utilizes some of the claims of canonical theism to reconsider the place and function of initial-evidence thinking within Classical Pentecostalism. Additionally, the essay explores how the Pentecostal experience and understanding of God would substantiate further the underdeveloped claims to theism that the movement makes.

Two main hypotheses have been proposed to account for the word order of negative inversion (NI) in varieties of non-canonical English (e.g.Don't nobody else care). An auxiliary inversion analysis argues that the word order is derived via movement of the auxiliary to the left periphery, whereas an existential analysis argues that the word order is an artifact of deletion of the expletive subject, parallelingthere-insertion existential constructions. After reviewing these hypotheses, I provide empirical evidence that neither of these theories adequately explains the peculiarities of NI. I advance a third hypothesis, namely that NI is the result of negative movement to the specifier of NegP, and that this movement is pragmatically motivated by an existential meaning in NI constructions. Syntactically, NI is made possible through the Neg-Criterion (Haegeman & Zanuttini 1991, 1996). This analysis explains problems encountered by prior analyses, and offers a unified analysis for variation in NI across dialects. Finally, I explain cross-dialectal differences in NI by considering the relationship between subject requirements and agreement.

The present study investigates motor processes underlying the production of iambic and trochaic metrical forms for children and adults. Lower lip movement was recorded while 16 children between the ages of 3;10 and 4;9 (years; months) and 8 adults produced iambic (e.g., [pép^p]) and trochaic (e.g., ['p^pep]) nonce words. For both children and adults, movement patterns for iambic and trochaic words are well differentiated, but in qualitatively different ways. Most notably, children do not produce amplitude modulated forms for trochees, perhaps reflecting a reliance on early developing rhythmic patterns such as those seen in canonical babbling. In contrast, movements corresponding to iambs are well modulated and particularly stable for both groups of speakers, suggesting that they require increased movement specificity. It appears that metrical forms are perceptually and linguistically established and that the child finds the means available within his or her existent motor repertoire to produce adequately differentiated movements corresponding with iambs and trochees.

While canonical gapping in English can be analyzed as either VPellipsis (e.g., Sag 1976 , Pesetsky 1982 , Jayaseelan 1990 , Lasnik 1999a , Johnson 2000 , Coppock 2001 , Lin 2002 , Baltin 2003 , Takahashi 2004 ) or across-the-board V/VP-movement ( Johnson 1994 , 2004 , 2006 , 2009 ), certain English-like gapping constructions in Modern Mandarin are argued to be multiple sentence fragments, formed by a series of syntactic operations that involve topicalization, focus movement, and IP-deletion.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper was to construct a canonical correlation analysis (CCA) model for the Zimbabwe stock exchange (ZSE). This paper analyses the impact of macroeconomic variables on stock returns for the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange using the canonical correlation analysis (CCA). Design/methodology/approach – Data for the independent (macroeconomic) variables and dependent variables (stock returns) were extracted from secondary sources for the period from January 1990 to December 2008. For each variable, 132 sets of data were collected. Eight top trading companies at the ZSE were selected, and their monthly stock returns were calculated using monthly stock prices. The independent variables include: consumer price index, money supply, treasury bills, exchange rate, unemployment, mining and industrial index. The CCA was used to construct the CCA model for the ZSE. Findings – Maximization of stock returns at the ZSE is mostly influenced by the changes in consumer price index, money supply, exchange rate and treasury bills. The four macroeconomic variables greatly affect the movement of stock prices which, in turn, affect stock returns. The stock returns for Hwange, Barclays, Falcon, Ariston, Border, Caps and Bindura were significant in forming the CCA model. Research limitations/implications – During the research period, some companies delisted due to economic hardships, and this reduced the sample size for stock returns for respective companies. Practical implications – The results from this research can be used by policymakers, stock market regulators and the government to make informed decisions when crafting economic policies for the country. The CCA model enables the stakeholders to identify the macroeconomic variables that play a pivotal role in maximizing the strength of the relationship with stock returns. Social implications – Macroeconomic variables, such as consumer price index, inflation, etc., directly affect the livelihoods of the general populace. They also impact on the performance of companies. The society can monitor economic trends and make the right decisions based on the current trends of economic performance. Originality/value – This research opens a new dimension to the study of macroeconomic variables and stock returns. Most studies carried out so far in Zimbabwe zeroed in on multiple regression as the central methodology. No study has been done using the CCA as the main methodology.

The study objective is to determine the possibility of identifying the state of coordination abilities development in girls and boys aged 11-13 using the methodology of multidimensional statistics. Materials and methods: Study participants. The study involved girls: 11 (n=20), 12 (n=23), 13 (n=19) years old; boys: 11 (n=21), 12 (n=20), 13 (n=19) years old. Study organization. The paper used analysis and generalization of scientific literature data, testing, discriminant analysis. Testing procedure. The testing program included well-known tests (Liakh, 2000; Serhiienko, 2001; Ivashchenko, 2016). Study results: The first canonical function explains 65.7% of the results variation, the second one – 25.1%, the third – 4.8%, which indicates their informative value. The coefficients of canonical correlation indicate the prognostic value of these functions. The first canonical discriminant function is most substantially related to the results of tests 4 (r=0.526), 14 (r=0.377), 2 (r=-0.306): therefore, a significant difference between the girls and boys aged 11-13 is observed in the development level of relative and speed strength, movement coordination. The structure coefficients of the second canonical discriminant function indicate that the function is most substantially related to variables 2 (r=0.502), 16 (r=0.434), 9 (r=0.379), 17 (r=0.357): so, a significant difference between the girls aged 12-13 and boys aged 11-13 is observed in speed strength, vestibular stability, and anthropometric data. Conclusions: The discriminant models characterize both age- and gender-related peculiarities of movement coordination development in the girls and boys aged 11-13. The data obtained show significant differences between the groups of girls and boys aged 11-13 both in the structure of coordination abilities development and the level of preparedness, and highlight the need to conduct separate physical education classes for girls and boys. Different programs should be used to develop coordination abilities in boys and girls aged 11-13.

In the present study, we examined the role of frontal eye field neurons in the maintenance of spatial information in a delayed-saccade paradigm. We found that visual, visuomovement, and movement neurons conveyed roughly equal amounts of spatial information during the delay period. Although there was significant delay-period activity in individual movement neurons, there was no significant delay-period activity in the averaged population of movement neurons. These contradictory results were reconciled by the finding that the population of movement neurons with memory activity consisted of two subclasses of neurons, the combination of which resulted in the cancellation of delay-period activity in the population of movement neurons. One subclass consisted of neurons with significantly greater delay activity in the preferred than in the null direction (“canonical”), whereas the other subclass consisted of neurons with significantly greater delay activity in the null direction than in the preferred direction (“paradoxical”). Preferred direction was defined by the saccade direction that evoked the greatest movement-related activity. Interestingly, the peak saccade-related activity of canonical neurons occurred before the onset of the saccade, whereas the peak saccade-related activity of paradoxical neurons occurred after the onset of the saccade. This suggests that the former, but not the latter, are directly involved in triggering saccades. We speculate that paradoxical neurons provide a mechanism by which spatial information can be maintained in a saccade-generating circuit without prematurely triggering a saccade.

The Augustinian canons have never enjoyed the level of scholarly attention afforded to the monastic and mendicant movements of the central middle ages. This disparity has been particularly acute in the British Isles, despite being its most prolific religious movement. Scholars working in England, Ireland, and Wales have begun to correct this historiographical lacuna. In Scotland, the regular canons have also received comparatively scant attention, and, indeed, have largely been understood on the basis of imported paradigms. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to address a deficiency in Scottish historiography and make a contribution to the growing scholarship on the regular canons in the British Isles. The regular canonical movement is examined within the kingdom of Scotland over the course of roughly a century. Eleven non-congregational houses of regular canons are considered, namely Scone, Holyrood, Jedburgh, St. Andrews, Cambuskenneth, and Inchcolm and the dependencies of Loch Tay, Loch Leven, Restenneth, Canonbie, and St. Mary’s Isle. The kingdom of Scotland provides both a common context, and a diverse milieu, in which to consider the foundation and development of these institutions and the movement as a whole. The chronological parameters have been determined by the foundation of the first house of regular canons in Scotland in c. 1120 and the Fourth Lateran Council in 1215, which had the effect of artificially creating the Order of St Augustine. By examining individual houses separately, as well as in unison, this study seeks to present an integrated picture of the regular canonical movement in the kingdom of Scotland during the period of its organic development from c. 1120 to 1215. The fundamental question concerning the regular canons is the nature of their vocation and their societal function. It has increasingly been recognised that a spectrum of different interpretations of canonical life existed ranging from the active – pastoral, practical, and outward looking – to the contemplative – ascetic, quasi-eremitical, and inward looking – which were all part of the same decentralised religious movement. This thesis attempts to situate the Scottish Augustinians, as far as possible, within this spectrum. It argues that a unique manifestation of the regular canonical movement emerged in the kingdom of Scotland as the result of a range of factors – including shared patrons, leadership, and episcopal support – which had the effect of creating a group identity, and, thereby, a collective understanding of their vocation and role in society. The subject institutions have been particularly fortunate in terms of the quality and variety of the surviving source material. The evidence is comprised principally of charter material, but also includes chronicles and foundation narratives produced by Scottish Augustinians, and these provide an essential supplement. This thesis sheds light on an important group of religious houses in Scotland and on a complex religious movement that is only beginning to be fully understood, and, thus, it is hoped that this study will lay the groundwork for future research.

A Real-Time Brain-Computer Interface is a technical system classifying increased or decreased brain activity in Real-Time between different body movements, actions performed by a person. Focus in this thesis will be on testing algorithms and settings, finding the initial time interval and how increased activity in the brain can be distinguished and satisfyingly classified. The objective is letting the system give an output somewhere within 250ms of a thought of an action, which will be faster than a persons reaction time.

Algorithms in the preprocessing were Blind Signal Separation and the Fast Fourier Transform. With different frequency and time interval settings the algorithms were tested on an offline Electroencephalographic data file based on the "Ten Twenty" Electrode Application System, classified using an Artificial Neural Network.

A satisfying time interval could be found between 125-250ms, but more research is needed to investigate that specific interval. A reduction in frequency resulted in a lack of samples in the sample window preventing the algorithms from working properly. A high frequency is therefore proposed to help keeping the sample window small in the time domain. Blind Signal Separation together with the Fast Fourier Transform had problems finding appropriate correlation using the Ten-Twenty Electrode Application System. Electrodes should be placed more selectively at the parietal lobe, in case of requiring motor responses.

Founded in the Savoyard "deserts" in the first half of the 12th century, the Abondance congregation had five abbeys in its heyday, spread between Savoy and the Jura, before disappearing at the beginning of the 17th century due to the reform of the mother abbey. Abondance and its first daughter in Sixt are the only abbeys of the congregation to remain in the former diocese of Geneva and are today major sites of Savoyard heritage. While Abondance has benefited from the curiosity of a few archaeologists and architects since 1860, Sixt remained ignored until the year 2000, due to the destruction of parts of the conventual buildings and the development of a hotel within them. A transdisciplinary approach, calling on archaeology, history, art history and the study of textual and iconographic sources, has made it possible to retrace the architectural evolution of the two sites over time, from the 12th to the 19th century. Confronted with the main issues of the canonical movement, such as communal life, pastoral ministry, assistance and charity, or the presence of women in the Augustinian communities, the study of the buildings reveals the choices and the evolution of the life of the brothers of Abondance, from the Gregorian reform to François de Sales, who put an end to this part of Savoyard religious history in 1604. More broadly, this thesis has made it possible to better understand Augustinian architecture in Northern Savoy, a historical region where the Regular Canons were numerous and spread over the territory, but also to refute certain legends and hypotheses generally accepted, such as the identity of Blessed Ponce "de Faucigny"

In the eleventh century, the cities of the Song Empire (960-1279) emerged into writing. Literati in prior centuries had looked away from crowded streets, but literati in the eleventh century found beauty in towering buildings and busy harbors. Their purpose in writing the city was ideological. On the written page, they tried to establish a distinction that eluded them in the avenues and to discern an immanent pattern in the movement of people, goods, and money. By the end of the eleventh century, however, they recognized that they had failed in their efforts. They had lost the Way in the city. Urban Life and Intellectual Crisis in Middle-Period China, 800-1100 reveals the central place of urban life in the history of the eleventh century. Important developments in literary innovation and monetary policy, in canonical exegesis and civil engineering, in financial reform and public health, converge in this book as they converged in the city.

The cerebellum uses sensory feedback and information about intended actions to ensure coordinated and smooth movements despite changing conditions. An analogy between the cerebellum and an orchestral conductor is elaborated. The cerebellum’s involvement in forming and executing motor memories is presented. Cerebellar circuits through the cerebellar cortex and deep nuclei and the dependence of cerebellar learning on climbing fiber input to Purkinje cells are briefly described. Sensory reafference and motor efference copy are defined and their roles in coordinating movement introduced. Cerebellar symptoms including ataxia, dysmetria and dysdiadochokinesia, are discussed and a possible model for dysmetria is considered. The specific inputs to and outputs from the vermis, paravermis, and lateral lobes are detailed in a description of canonical cerebellar loops. Finally, evidence that the cerebellum is involved in modulating nonmotor functions such as language, affect, social cognition, and visceral control is presented for the reader’s consideration.

African American Literature in Transition, 1920-1930 presents original essays that map ideological, historical, and cultural shifts in the 1920s. Complicating the familiar reading of the 1920s as a decade that began with a spectacular boom and ended with disillusionment and bust, the collection explores the range and diversity of Black cultural production. Emphasizing a generative contrast between the ephemeral qualities of periodicals, clothes, and décor and the relative fixity of canonical texts, this volume captures in its dynamics a cultural movement that was fluid and expansive. Chapters by leading scholars are grouped into four sections: 'Habitus, Sound, Fashion'; 'Spaces: Chronicles of Harlem and Beyond'; 'Uplift Renewed: Religion, Protest, and Education,' and 'Serial Reading: Magazines and Periodical Culture.'

Why the Kalevala and not the Kanteletar? The Kalevala Society’s 101st Yearbook maps the processes of canonizing and marginalizing in traditions, cultural heritage and literature by focusing on the fringes of cultural ideals and norms. How and using which criteria have researchers, artists and materials of cultural production been lifted up or pushed aside? What kind of nations would have emerged if writing the nation had rested on the alternatives: the marginal rather than the canonical genres? A look into the blind spots and fringes of culture and research reveals the endless movement in and between hierarchically positioned spheres of culture. Listening to margins changes not only the canon but also the idea of canon.

Modernism and Non-Translation proposes a new way of reading key modernist texts, including the work of canonical figures such as T. S. Eliot, James Joyce, and Ezra Pound. The topic of this book is the incorporation of untranslated fragments from various languages within modernist writing. It explores non-translation in modernist fiction, poetry, and other forms, with a principally European focus. The intention is to begin to answer a question that demands collective expertise: what are the aesthetic and cultural implications of non-translation for modernist literature? How did non-translation shape the poetics, and cultural politics, of some of the most important writers of this period? Twelve essays by leading scholars of modernism explore American, British, and Irish texts, alongside major French and German writers, and the wider modernist recovery of Classical languages. They explore non-translation from the dual perspectives of both ‘insider’ and ‘outsider’, unsettling that false opposition, and articulating in the process their individuality of expression and experience. The range explored indicates something of the reach and vitality of the matter of translation—and specifically non-translation—across a selection of poetry, fiction, and non-fictional prose, while focusing on mainly canonical voices. Offering a series of case studies, the volume aims to encourage further exploration of connections across languages and among writers. Together, the collection seeks to provoke and extend debate on the aesthetic, cultural, political, and conceptual dimensions of non-translation as an important yet hitherto neglected facet of modernism, helping to redefine our understanding of that movement. It demonstrates the rich possibilities of reading modernism through instances of non-translation.

Table Lands: Food in Children's Literature surveys food’s function in children’s texts, showing how the socio-cultural contexts of food reveal children’s agency through examining texts that vary from historical to contemporary, non-canonical to classics, the Anglo-American to multicultural traditions, including a variety of genres, formats, and audiences: realism, fantasy, cookbooks, picture books, chapter books, YA novels, and film. The first chapter tracks children’s cookbooks over 150 years to show how adults’ expectations change based on shifting ideologies of child capability. Subsequent chapters survey canonical authors. Social work theory, British rural and urban cultures, and poverty inform the analysis of the foodways that underlie Beatrix Potter’s animal tales. Investigating Jewish immigration and foodways, food manufacturing, and roadside/programmatic architecture reveals Maurice Sendak’s In the Night Kitchen as an immigrant Jewish and natively American work. A.A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh books work as a künstlerroman; Mary Douglas’s semiotic analysis and the history of honey and bees show Pooh as a poet who celebrates food. Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House books contrast with Louise Erdrich’s Birchbark series: differing foodways showcase competing cultural and environmental values. The final chapters examine intersections of geography, history, and food in contemporary texts. Francesca Lia Block’s Dangerous Angels reflects Los Angeles culture. Disney•Pixar’s Ratatouille showcases French haute cuisine in its story of otherness. In One Crazy Summer and its sequels, Rita Williams-Garcia tracks the movement of African American internal diasporas, through southern foodways, soul food, and the Black Panthers’ breakfast program. Refugee Studies demonstrate how food is a primary signifier of the difficulties posed by forced migration in Thanhha Lai’s Inside Out & Back Again.

This article describes the postmodern approach to the history of political thought that has evolved through the practices of a variety of theorists in both Europe and the United States since the 1950s. It maintains that Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophy is the originating point of this movement, although neither he nor any of the other theorists it mentions left any canonical statements of methods to compare with the works of Quentin Skinner or Leo Strauss. Terms such as “deconstruction,” “genealogy,” and “radical hermeneutics” are often used to describe these methods. At the broadest level, the postmodern approach displays an acute sensitivity to the role of language in politics, and in political theory itself, that originates in the work of Nietzsche. While postmodernism is nothing if not a congeries of method, this article argues that these diverse approaches have, if not a unity, than at least common sources and overlapping themes.

Abstract.Myosin 10 (Myo10) is an actin-based molecular motor that is essential for filopodia formation and likely senses tension through interactions with integrins in filopodial tips. It possesses a single α-helical (SAH) domain at the end of its canonical lever, which amplifies the movement of the motor. We have shown the SAH domain can contribute to lever function and possesses the properties of a constant force spring. Here we investigate whether the SAH domain plays a role in tension sensing and whether it becomes extended under load at the filopodial tip. Previously, we found that removing the entire SAH domain and short anti-parallel coiled coil (CC) region at the C-terminal end of the SAH does not prevent Myo10 from moving to filopodial tips in cells. Exploiting this, we generated recombinant forms of Myo10, in which a tension-sensing module (TSMod), comprising a FRET-pair YPet and mCherry separated by a linker sequence of amino acids was then inserted between the Myo10 motor and tail domains, so as to replace the SAH domain and CC region. The linker sequence comprised either a portion of the native SAH domain, or control sequences that were either short (x1: stiff) or long (x5: flexible) repeats of “GPGGA”. As additional controls we also placed the TSMod construct at the N-terminus, where it should not experience force. Our FRET measurements indicate that the SAH domain of Myo10 may become extended at when the protein is stalled at the filopodial tips, so the SAH domain may therefore act as a force sensor.

AbstractThe theory of Narrative Economics suggests that narratives present in media influence market participants and drive economic events. In this chapter, we investigate how financial news narratives relate to movements in the CBOE Volatility Index. To this end, we first introduce an uncharted dataset where news articles are described by a set of financial keywords. We then perform topic modeling to extract news themes, comparing the canonical latent Dirichlet analysis to a technique combining doc2vec and Gaussian mixture models. Finally, using the state-of-the-art XGBoost (Extreme Gradient Boosted Trees) machine learning algorithm, we show that the obtained news features outperform a simple baseline when predicting CBOE Volatility Index movements on different time horizons.

The basis for a functional communication perspective for elicitation strategies is a selection of generalised high-value genres referred to as canonical genres. There are a number of families of genre but those that are of particular relevance to interviewing and interview protocols are the so-called factual and narrative genre families. The purpose of the chapter is to describe each of these in turn. Following the software engineering pattern movement, each genre that belongs to these families will be described using a common format: a name (capitalized as is convention for genres in SFL), a description, a genre element inventory or a table that provides the list of the genre elements codes, names and function, the corresponding genre digraph, and an authentic transcript marked up with genre stages. The transcripts used to exemplify these canonical genres, reveal a range of unusual features unpacked in more detail in the next chapter.

This chapter provides an exploration of the decolonial possibilities in works by the Brazilian Modernist movement of the early twentieth century – Antropofagia [Anthropophagy] – namely key works by its most acclaimed writers, Mário de Andrade and Oswald de Andrade. The first chapter, ‘Decolonizing Consumption and Postcoloniality: a Theory of Allegory in Oswald de Andrade’s Antropofagia,’ interrogates what I argue to be a central aspect of the works and political project of the movement – the deployment of a particular mode of allegory, one of consumption. I explore this allegory of consumption beyond canonical readings of the movement’s cannibal metaphor in relation to Oswald de Andrade’s collection of poetry, Pau Brasil [Brazilwood], in addition to his seminal manifesto, ‘Manifesto Antropófago’ [‘Antropophagic Manifesto’] (1928).

This research used eye movement tracking to study the ways adolescents decode and comprehend multimodal texts. The focus is on eye movement regression between text and picture to investigate how participants use the two-stage information-processing model when attempting to comprehend visual texts. Ten adolescents ranging in age from 14 to 19 were asked to read a series of different types of visually based texts. Specifically, they read six short excerpts from graphic novels that varied widely in the complexity of both textual and visual features. The narratives included graphic novels, graphic retellings of canonical texts, and wordless visual texts.

This chapter applies the theory of the preceding chapters to A’ constructions, such as wh-questions and relative clauses. The main result of this chapter is that there is a range of ways in which the conceptual ‘work’ associated with these constructions can be expressed in the correspondence between syntax, phonology, and meaning. None of them involve ‘movement’ in the classical sense, although some constructional devices do express links between constituents not in canonical position relative to their governing heads, giving the illusion of movement.

This chapter discusses the circumstances of Kraków Orthodoxy at the beginning of the twentieth century that constitute the background of the emergence of the Bais Yaakov movement. While Kraków is the birthplace of the Bais Yaakov movement, it was actually conceived, as it were, in Vienna, where Sarah Schenirer had fled with a flood of refugees after the outbreak of the First World War brought the Russian army into Galicia. The canonical story of the founding of the movement insists that the inspiration did not and could not have come to her in Kraków, where Orthodox rabbis did not address their female congregants from the pulpit and where Jewish girls' education was treated with utter neglect. Sarah Schenirer's founding of a girls' school system was thus a pioneering venture into unexplored territory, in which the initiative of a single woman solved a problem that no one else around her recognized, cared about, or could resolve. There is one detail in her memoir, however, that complicates this picture. Extrapolating from her brother's words, it was not the case that no one in Kraków had so far considered using religious education to combat the defection of Jewish girls. Rather, this strategy, however obvious and even laudable it might be, was impracticable given the political realities of Orthodox life.

Abstract HENRY DAVID THOREAU (1817– 1862), although now considered along with Emerson and Fuller as one of the three major writers of the Transcendentalist movement, was a young unpublished writer when the movement began. The majority of his publications during the main Transcendental period were in the Dial, and most of those were published after Fuller, who generally was unimpressed with his writing, was no longer editor. The Thoreau of the early 1840s was, in shore, far from the canonical author he is today, and most of his writings were book reviews disguised as essays, scholarly discussions, translations, and nature writings. “A Winter Walk” shows the master stylist of Walden in his impressive apprentice period.

This chapter argues that for many church officials, the fervent Hispanic Catholics in evangelization groups, apostolic movements, small faith communities, and youth ministries represent the organizational challenge of tapping into their leadership base and guiding it—or some would say controlling it—so that it remains faithful to a canonical vision of the Catholic Church's teachings and mission. Hispanic ministry leaders contend that a particularly urgent challenge is to form their grassroots counterparts in a broad ecclesial vision that transcends the bounds of their own movement or group and diminishes competition between fellow leaders. Another frequent concern is that many charismatic leaders are overly focused on the pursuit of affective religious experience and are ill equipped to deal with inevitable disappointments in their ministries and perceived defects in fellow church leaders, especially priests.

Trading volume movement prediction is the key in a variety of financial applications. Despite its importance, there is few research on this topic because of its requirement for comprehensive understanding of information from different sources. For instance, the relation between multiple stocks, recent transaction data and suddenly released events are all essential for understanding trading market. However, most of the previous methods only take the fluctuation information of the past few weeks into consideration, thus yielding poor performance. To handle this issue, we propose a graph-based approach that can incorporate multi-view information, i.e., long-term stock trend, short-term fluctuation and sudden events information jointly into a temporal heterogeneous graph. Besides, our method is equipped with deep canonical analysis to highlight the correlations between different perspectives of fluctuation for better prediction. Experiment results show that our method outperforms strong baselines by a large margin.

We constructed citation maps of eight canonical articles in the reproducibility discourse of the reform movement in science to explore how this discourse travels through the research landscape. The map indicates that this discourse largely remains within the confines of the biomedical and social sciences where they originated. This suggests that research policies and assessment guidelines that are based on this discourse might be inappropriate or inapplicable for other disciplines making any universal guidelines and policies problematic and carrying with it the danger of epistemic injustice. Therefore, we recommend further investigations into whether and how reproducibility is talked about locally within different and diverse fields across the research landscape.

Concierto de Aranjuez for classical guitar and symphony orchestra written by the Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo Vidre in 1939 is in the author’s spotlight. The traditional tripartite structure with the tempo correlation Allegro con spirito-Adagio-Allegro gentile fits perfectly into the genre canons of a classical concert: not coincidentally this concert is considered an eloquent example of Spanish Neoclassicism. The particular significance is the sound concept of the second movement based on the melodic legitimacy of saelta, a religious song appeared as an imitation of the psalmody of the canonical religious service. The texts of saelta reflect events and emotions of the Holy Week. Thanks to the fact that a genre of secular music involves the concepts and means of musical expression of a religious genre, adds to the second part an enormous depth and sensitivity, provoking a very strong emotional reaction of the listener. We mention in parentheses that Concierto de Aranjues is one of the most performed concerts for modern classical guitar in the world, while the second part is very often performed as an autonomous creation.

Abstract In this first paper of a three-part series, we present the extension and validation of the high-order Discontinuous Galerkin scheme in DLR’s CFD-solver TRACE for scale-resolving simulations of unsteady row interactions. The translational movement of rows in linear cascade experiments is represented in the numerical model by solving the equations in the relative frame of reference. To couple rows in different frames of reference, a sliding interface approach based on the mortar technique for non-conforming meshes has been developed. The verification of the approach is exemplified by three canonical test cases. First, the experimental order of convergence is verified for the isentropic vortex convection. Subsequently, the suitability of the sliding interface approach for scale-resolving simulations is tested on the Taylor-Green vortex flow and a turbulent cylinder flow. Finally, the LES solver is applied to the T106D cascade with upstream moving bars at an exit Reynolds number of 200, 000 and exit Mach number of 0.4. The flow physics with and without bars are discussed in terms of the instantaneous flow field, and time- and phase-averaged quantities. The comparison with experimental data shows overall a good agreement, especially for the total pressure losses in the wake, but also reveals uncertainties related to the reproduction of an experiment in the numerical model.

Engineering and psychophysiological car following models emerge in the late 1950s (Saifuzzaman & Zheng, 2014). Such models differ in their ground concepts and explanatory mechanisms, but both assume a fundamental tenet: following each other, drivers invariably attempt to couple, keeping safety distance. More recent models focus on the spontaneous emergence of traffic jams that results from the properties of a system of interacting vehicles (i.e., without bottlenecks). In an experimental setting Sugiyama et al., (2008) have successfully recreated the conditions that allow the observation of the typical soliton wave going backwards through several car clusters. When certain speed, density and inter-vehicular distance join, so do traffic jams. Some of us have built upon these and other factors (e.g., wave movement in nature) exploring the mathematical properties of a system with three incognita that also needs three variables to be solved (Melchor & Sánchez, 2014). Two canonical car-following techniques emerge as a consequence: Driving to keep safety Distance (DD) vs Inertia (DI). Also a basic question: can drivers actually understand and follow either way, or do they stick to a basic normative driving behavior? This paper summarizes the results after three experimental studies done with a driving simulator. Several performance measures from individual drivers (accelerations, decelerations, average speed, distance to leader, and so on) were taken. As an overall indicator, results consistently announce in the three studies that DI trips consume less fuel (about 20%) than DD ones.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/CIT2016.2016.3406

Abstract: The recent academic interest in the surrealist movement is a far-reaching review, having widened the scope of analysis with evident multidisciplinary ambition. Its strategic relationship with other disciplines, the imposture of their urban drifts as social and ethnographic practices, the deepening on the manipulation techniques of photography and writing, the naturalization of fragmentation associated with montage and, finally, the review of the imprecise nature of the Surrealist object in its different versions (objet trouvé, objet à réaction poétique, objet-type, ready-made, etc.) and its seminal role in the contemporary facilitate an open and complex research scenario. A scenario within which the work of Le Corbusier is perceived in a new perspective. Le Corbusier adopted techniques related to surrealism, such as photography, montage, automatism and the calligram, in order to expand as well as undermine the meaning of canonical paradigms associated to productive and technological rationality, in particular those related to the domestic milieu. The use of such display of discursive instruments facilitated the contamination of his editorial and architectural work with the destabilizing and conflicting strategies that characterize the Movement.
