Santalum album (L.) is a prized tropical tree species of high therapeutic and industrial importance. The wood of these naturally grown plants is extensively harvested to acquire therapeutically important metabolite santalol and be used for additional functions such as in wood statuette industries. Due to high demand, it is crucial to maintain a sufficient plant population. An easy protocol for establishing cell suspension culture initiated from the loose embryogenic callus mass of sandalwood was realized by shifting 6–8-week-old morphogenic calli acquired from the mature embryonic axis and cotyledon explant cultures in fluid media. The asynchronous embryogenic cultures were sloughed with clumps of flourishing cell clumps and embryos of various progressive phases along with diffident non-embryogenic tissues. The frequency of embryo proliferation was evidenced to determinethe expansion pace of embryogenic masses under diverse conditions. The intonation of initiation and creation of cell suspension was under the directive of the influence of exogenous plant growth regulators amended in the nutrient medium at different concentrations and combinations. Maximum relative growth rate (386%) and clumps/embryoids in elevated integers (321.44) were accomplished on MS nutrient medium fortified with 2.0 mg L−1 2,4-D in association with 0.5 mg L−1 BA and 30.0 g L−1 sucrose raised from mature embryonic axis-derived calli. Plantlet regeneration in higher frequency (84.43%) was evidenced on MS medium amended with 1.0 mg L−1 each of TDZ and GA3 in conjunction with 0.5 mg L−1 NAA and 20.0 g L−1 sucrose. Mature embryonic axis-derived calli were found to be constantly better than mature cotyledon-derived calli for raising profitable and reproducible cell suspension cultures. Regenerants displayed normal growth and morphology and were founded successfully in the external environment after hardening.

Paramignya trimera (Oliv.) Guill., a woody climber commonly known as "Xao tam phan", has been used in Vietnamese folk for the treatment of numerous cancers. Due to word of mouth about the anticancer properties of this plant, its stems and roots have been overexploited leading to the serious decline of this species in Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa and Ninh Thuan provinces. The aim of the study was to establish an in vitro propagation protocol for the conservation of P. trimera. In this research shoot clusters (5–8 shoots/cluster) were regenerated from axillary bud explants of 1–3 year-old trees after 3 months of cultures on the WPM (woody plant medium) supplemented with STS 3 and BA 5–7 mg/L. STS (silver thiosulfate) was used to prevent the leaf abscission. These shoot clusters grew slowly and reached 1–3 cm in heights after 4 months of the cultures. These shoot clusters did not form any roots after 2 months of culture on the rooting media with IBA and/or NAA 1–5 mg/L. However, there was 51 % of the treated shoot clusters acclimatized and produced new stem and leaves after 2 months growing in greenhouse. WPM supplemented with STS 3, BA 5 and IBA 5 mg/L showed the best response for callus induction in leaf explants after 3 months of cultures. Among the callus types, the milky white compact calli were induced at the cut surface of leaf explants after 3 months of the cultures and became the compact and nodulated calli within 4 weeks later.

The main goal of this article is to analyze 688 KCI (Korea Citation Index) articles in terms of the Biblio data collector and the software package NetMiner. A point to note is that there was a publication of 33 KCI articles in December in 2020, which have the highest frequency (33 articles) and the highest proportion (0.048). A further point to note is that the word study was the most frequently used keyword, followed by the word Corpus, and the word verb, in that order. It is interesting to note that topic 6 that is constituted by the words learner, English, study, verb, and student occurred in 125 articles (the highest). It is noteworthy that topic 6 was the most preferred by authors, followed by topic 5, topic1, and topic 8. With respect to degree (the frequency of documents), it is worthwhile noting that the word study was the most preferred by authors, followed by the word Corpus, the word result, the word analysis, and the word corpus. Finally, this article provides the visualization of which words are linked to the word corpus. To be more specific, the words language, student, translation and the Korean word malmwungchi ‘corpus’ are directly linked to the word corpus.

Callus induction, callus growth, and plantlet regeneration were examined using leaf explants of three Salixexigua clones. Calli were initiated on three basal media supplemented with 0.1 mg/L (0.44 μM) or 0.5 mg/L (2.2 μM) of benzylaminopurine and 0.1 mg/L (0.45 μM) or 0.5 mg/L (2.3 μM) of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid in a factorial fashion. After 7 weeks of growth, callus production was highest on woody plant medium. Developed calli were subsequently cultured on woody plant medium supplemented with either 0.1 or 0.5 mg/L of benzylaminopurine for shoot induction. Shoot primordia developed only at 0.1 mg/L (0.44 μM) benzylaminopurine in two clones, suggesting clonal variation in organogenic response. Shoots larger than 1.0 cm in length were successfully rooted in half-strength Murashige and Skoog medium without hormones.

Rhododendron `Montego' shoot cultures initiated from plants with and without tissue proliferation (TP and NTP) served as explant sources for all studies (Note: in vitro TP shoot cultures produce primarily dwarf shoots, some long shoots, and stem tumors). Calli induced from TP leaves and tumors and NTP leaves were cultured on woody plant (WP) medium containing NAA and 2-iP. During the first 4 weeks of culture, calli from NTP leaves had higher relative growth rates than calli from TP leaves or tumors. However, calli from TP leaves and tumors grew faster than calli from NTP leaves for all subculture periods that followed. Shoot tips (5 mm) were excised from TP dwarf shoots, TP long shoots, and NTP shoots and were cultured on WP medium with or without 15 μM 2-iP. Shoot tips from TP dwarf and long shoots multiplied on medium without 2-iP, averaging 18.4 and 1.7 shoots per shoot tip in 12 weeks, respectively. Shoot tips from NTP shoots only multiplied when maintained on 2-iP-containing medium. When placed on 2-iP-containing medium, both types of TP shoot tips produced clusters of callus-like nodules that gave rise to highly tumorized, short shoots or leafy meristems.

The genus Betula contains many important forest and ornamental species and a method of rapid clonal propagation of superior genotypes is needed. Thidiazuron (TDZ) is a potent synthetic plant growth regulator with cytokinin-like activity. TDZ was used to differentiate shoots after long term exposure to dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2.4-D) as part of a larger study on clonal fidelity. Birch calli were cultured on Woody Plant Medium supplemented with 10-5 M 2,4-D for up to 30 weeks. The calli were transferred to media containing TDZ at concentrations of 10-6 to 10-9M. Most of the tissue which had not been exposed to 2.4-D differentiated shoots five weeks after being exposed to 10-6M TDZ. Increasing the of time exposure to 2.4-D or decreasing the concentration of TDZ delayed differentiation. Calli exposed to 2.4-D for more than 18 weeks rarely differentiated shoots regardless of the concentration of TDZ used.

Arabinogalactan proteins (AGPs) are extra-cellular proteins involved in plant growth and development. The effects of these proteins on in vitro response of different species are well documented. This study assessed for the first time the role of AGPs on tissue culture of coconut, a highly recalcitrant species in vitro. Coconut (Sri Lanka Tall) plumules were cultured in medium containing 2, 4-dichlorophenoxyaceticacid (2,4-D) for callogenesis. Calli were multiplied by subculturing onto freshly prepared callusing medium. Somatic embryos were induced by transferring of calli to medium with 2/3 concentration of initial 2,4-D and matured by subsequent transferring to medium without any hormones. Embryos were converted in the presence of gibberelic acid. Arabic gum (1-50 mgL-1) was used as the main source of AGP. Alternatively, different AGP sources like Larch wood gum, carrot seeds and defatted coconut kernel were also assessed. Arabic gum in callusing medium resulted in early callogenesis from 20-40% plumules compared to 10% in the control. However, it did not have a significant effect on final callusing efficiency. Its presence in somatic embryogenesis medium showed a significantly higher mass of embryogenic structures per an embryogenic clump (33.3-50.5mg) when compared to the control (26.9mg).The best result was obtained at 10mgL-1 Arabic gum. All AGP sources except Larch wood gum had positive effects on somatic embryogenesis. Among them, defatted coconut kernel (25-50mgL-1) showed the best results giving 70% cultures with embryogenic structures compared to 37% in control. However, so far, the positive effect of AGP did not reflect in plant regeneration efficiency.

The members of the family Apocynaceae are the rich in alkaloids, terpinoids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds and hydrocarbons. Anodendron paniculatum Roxb. is an woody climber, the roots of which have been used to control vomiting and cough. In the present study, adult plant and tissue culture plant extracts of A. paniculatum collected from Eastern Ghats, Araku, Andhra Pradesh were used for the production of their secondary metabolites and antioxidant activity. Methanol extracts of calli showed high contents of total phenol and alkaloid with 25.53 and 25.98 mg/g respectively. Methanol extract of tissue culture plant at higher concentrations showed better antioxidant activity with reference to standard ascorbic acid. For this study different concentrations (12.5, 25, 50, 100 and 200 µg/ml) of extracts were prepared by using four different solvents. Tissue culture extracts from methanol showed maximum scavenging activity with 231.9±1.39 % at 200 µg/ml of concentration, while that of adult plant extracts showed the scavenging activity of 189.1±0.74% only. These results on high antioxidant activity of the methanol extract of A. paniculatum calli can be attributed to the presence of high phenolic and alkaloid contents in calli when compared to that of adult plant extract.

Abstract Aloeswood or Agarwood has long been perfumery commodity traded between Mediterranean Region and Southeast Asia since ancient times. Oil or chips are obtained by destructive harvesting of several Thymeleaceous genera includes Aquilaria and Gonystylus and are expensive and highly demanded ingredients in the global market. The recent recovery of Gyrinops walla as a potential producer of market-quality agarwood in mature damaged woods and branches, the intense illicit felling and exportation G. walla leading to the verge of extinction from Sri Lankan flora. The sustainable utilization of G. walla undoubtedly enhances the foreign exchange of the country and the non-destructive utilization G. walla through biotechnology is the only option available for sustainable exploitation and conservation of the vulnerable G. walla species. An electro-elicitation apparatuses were designed and built to stimulate calli and cell suspensions. The elicited and calli and cell suspensions were harvested at different time periods to extract sesquiterpenes. Current intensities of 10 mA and 50 mA, and 0.1 mA were the optimum values for the induction of sesquiterpenes; γ-selinene, β-caryophyllene, α-cadinol and α-guaiene, production in both calli and cell suspension after 8 weeks and 6 hours, respectively. The findings of the study led to conclude the possibility of induction of production of sesquiterpenes through electro-elicitation of G. walla calli and cell suspension in an in vitro system for sustainable utilization and conservation endeavours.

El plantejament del treball es fa partint de dues constatacions: l'estudi del silenci requereix una visió interdisciplinària i parlar-ne constitueix una paradoxa en si mateix. L'aproximació es realitza tenint en compte la seva gran rellevància en l'art en general i en la poesia en particular, en què la seva influència ha estat decisiva, especialment a partir del segle XX. Al llarg d’aquest treball volem ressaltar el silenci poètic o, millor dit, la seva capacitat d’eloqüència, el seu dot de suggeriment, la seva idoneïtat per expressar l’inefable com a veu de misteri i com a codi d’enigma, i, en definitiva, el seu indiscutible paper com a transmissor de l’experiència vital i artística dels poetes. En aquest recorregut polisèmic, hem focalitzat en els poetes catalans del segle XX l'exemplificació del significat vital i artístic que el silenci i la seva profunda i àmplia poètica representa.
The approach of the work is based on two observations: the study requires an interdisciplinary silence and talking about it is a paradox in itself. The approach is made taking into account the great significance in art in general and poetry in particular, where its influence has been decisive, especially since the twentieth century. Throughout this paper, we highlight the poetic silence, or rather, their ability eloquence, her dowry suggestion, their suitability to express the ineffable mystery as voice and as a source of mystery, and, ultimately, its indisputable role as a transmitter of life experience and artistic poets. This route polysemous we focused on Catalan poets of the twentieth century exemplification of vital significance and artistic silence and deep and broad poetic accounts.

This composition portfolio and exegesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, contains original creative works supported by a comprehensive commentary. The submission consists of one volume in two parts containing primary materials of original libretti and musical scores, and the secondary component of an explanatory exegesis. Part A includes the major oratorio work, called Bushfire Oratorio, as well as two small oratorio studies or minor works, called Bright Star: Estelle and Lionheart: The Threshold. Part B is comprised of an exegesis, which provides a commentary on the genesis, libretti writing and composition approaches, limitations and elucidations of the original works in the portfolio. Appendices follow the exegesis and include a list of sources, compact discs of sound recordings, and several other compositions relevant to the research. The purpose of the research was to investigate composing both the text and the music for oratorios linked by the archetypal literary form of the hero’s journey. The research method combined the creative roles of librettist and composer and, in doing so, facilitated a deeper understanding of the genre today. The disciplines of creative writing and musical composition overlap in this work and it is the convergence of these distinct trajectories in oratorio that was the focus of the research.

The aim of this study was to examine how providing functional information affects three year olds’ word learning. Previous work has demonstrated that children use perceptual or functional information about an object to aid in word learning. That is, they tend to base word meaning on the shape of the item (e.g., Jones, Smith, & Landau, 1991) or on its function (e.g., Kemler-Nelson et al, 2000). The authors asked whether there were additive effects of functional and perceptual cues on word learning and generalization,either immediately after training, or one to two days later. Thirteen typically developing children were taught four novel words in a play paradigm. They were provided with functional and perceptual information for two of the objects, and given perceptual information only for the other two. The children were exposed to multiple exemplars of each object taught, and allowed to manipulate the items. The children were tested for receptive and expressive knowledge of the words seven to eleven minutes after teaching, and one to two days later.Children did not perform better than chance levels on receptive tasks in any condition, nor did they perform above floor levels on expressive tasks. It is concluded that additional functional information does not enhance word learning for young children in this paradigm.

Este trabalho é apresentado em quatro Capítulos. Num primeiro Capítulo, debruço-me sobre os fundamentos para uma compreensão da dimensão dialógica da Bíblia, no Antigo e Novo Testamento. No segundo Capítulo, abordo o Salmo 138 (139), numa perspetiva de comunicação e relação entre Deus e o ser humano. No terceiro Capítulo, destaco como tema a perfeição da comunicação e da relação, segundo a Primeira Carta de S. João. Por último, no quarto Capítulo, faço uma apresentação e reflexão sobre a prática lectiva que desenvolvi, tendo em conta os alunos e a Escola em que se desenrolou. Concluo que este percurso e Relatório Final apontam para a atualização na minha vida e na minha prática letiva, da possibilidade que tive de aprofundar a Palavra de Deus num horizonte de comunicação e relação.
This study is presented in four Chapters. In the first Chapter, I focus on the foundations which comprehend the dialogic dimension of the Bible, in the Old and New Testament. In the second Chapter, I approach Salm 138 (139), from a perspective of communication and relationshiop between God and human beings. In the third Chapter, I highlight the subject of perfection of the communication and the relationship, according to The First Letter of Saint John. Lastly, in the fourth Chapter, I present a reflection on the teaching practice I developed, taking into account the students and School in which this practice was developed. I conclude that this path and Final Report point towards an update in my life and teaching practices, it shows the possibility I had to deepen the Word of God in the realm of communication and relationship.

Business angels (BAs), also designated as angels, play a vital role in the process of emergence and nurturing entrepreneurial startups at their early stages and keep growing in number and relevance. However, today, they face dramatic challenges from the increasing organisation of their activity through professionalised angel groups. New players (e.g. crowdfunding, venture capital) are also entering their natural arena of early-stage investments. Therefore, this is a critical moment, in which the scientific community and the BAs may reflect and create knowledge about the new way of acting and investing of these investors. The overall purpose of this doctoral thesis is to develop a deeper understanding of the goals and the value angels currently perceive from their investing activity. First, angel goals were analysed under an approach proposing consumer behaviour and perceived value as a new lens of an integrative analysis with the conventional economic and financial views, to obtain a more holistic, richer, and precise view of the angel behaviour. Second, the perceived investment value, already applied to stock market investors, was extended to the angel scope to measure the type of values angels perceive from their activity and their impact on job satisfaction and reinvestment. Third, the angel activity was analysed through the career development theory perspective to uncover the internal motives that drive individuals to invest their money and effort following an angel career. Fourth, since calling became, in recent years, a fundamental topic in work and career development, part of the research was conducted to measure the impact of calling on the angels’ involvement in their activity, and on the value they perceive from it. Both qualitative and quantitative methodologies are adopted: the former is based on interviews with BAs and on the laddering technique; and the latter on structural equation modelling techniques, with which responses of angels worldwide to questionnaires were analysed. This thesis highlights that becoming a BA enhances the opportunity for achieving a high diversity of interrelated goals such as self-development, co-creating value with the entrepreneurs, earning money, having fun and experiencing emotional excitement from investing in startups. The importance of addressing angel activity as a career development process is reinforced. The perception of getting value with the investing activity, including career development, also makes BAs more satisfied and more likely to reinvest. Moreover, those BAs who see their work as a calling are more likely to perceive value from angel investing and more likely to be involved in angel activity. For many individuals, being a BA is not exclusively a financial game; the journey of being an angel is more important than the financial outcome. The “journey” is itself the destination. Finally, crucial implications were identified for angel groups, entrepreneurs and the entire BAs’ ecosystem. The angel experience is personal and non-delegable. Therefore, angels should not be prevented from reaching their deepest personal goals aligned with their lives. Professionalised groups and entrepreneurs should create conditions to let the angels live the angel experience they intend to live, being encouraged to achieve their most important goals. If this happens, BAs will feel more satisfied, increasing their reinvestment opportunities and remaining for a long term in the BAs’ career.

No entanto, enfrentam atualmente enormes desafios de posicionamento, decorrentes da crescente organização da sua atividade através de grupos de BA profissionalizados e pela entrada de novos atores (ex. crowdfunding, capital de risco) no mercado. Este é um momento crítico, em que a comunidade científica e os BA poderem refletir e criar conhecimento sobre a nova forma de atuar e investir destes investidores. O objetivo principal desta tese é desenvolver uma análise mais profunda dos objetivos e do valor que os BA percebem da sua atividade. Primeiramente, os objetivos dos BA foram analisados sob uma abordagem que propõe o comportamento do consumidor e o valor percebido como uma nova lente de análise integrada com as visões económico-financeiras convencionais, de modo a obter uma visão mais holística, rica e precisa do BA. Em segundo lugar, o valor do investimento percebido, já aplicado aos investidores em bolsa, foi estendido à área dos BAs para medir o valor que os anjos percebem como resultado da sua atividade e o impacto deste na satisfação com o trabalho e na intenção de reinvestimento. Em terceiro, a atividade dos BAs foi analisada à luz das teorias de desenvolvimento de carreira para descobrir os motivos internos que levam os indivíduos a investir o seu dinheiro e esforço numa carreira de BA. Em quarto lugar, uma vez que a calling (vocação) se tornou, nos últimos anos, um tópico fundamental na análise do desenvolvimento da carreira, parte deste estudo foi conduzido para medir o impacto da vocação no envolvimento dos BA na sua atividade e na perceção do valor que dela resulta. Foram adotadas metodologias tanto qualitativas como quantitativas: as primeiras são baseadas em entrevistas com BA e na técnica de laddering, e as últimas na modelagem de equações estruturais com a qual se analisaram respostas a questionários de BA de todo o mundo. Esta tese realça que ser BA aumenta a oportunidade de atingir uma grande diversidade de objetivos pessoais interrelacionados tais como autodesenvolvimento, contribuir para a sociedade, cocriar valor com os empreendedores, ganhar dinheiro, divertir-se e experimentar a excitação emocional de investir em startups. A importância de abordar a atividade de BA como um processo de desenvolvimento de carreira sai reforçada. A perceção de valor com a atividade de investimento, incluindo o desenvolvimento de carreira, torna os BA mais satisfeitos e mais propensos a reinvestir. Além disso, os BA que veem o seu trabalho como uma vocação têm mais probabilidade de perceber o valor do investimento e de se envolverem na sua atividade de anjos. Para muitos indivíduos, ser BA não é apenas um jogo financeiro; pelo contrário, o caminho de ser investidor aparenta ser mais importante que o resultado financeiro. A própria “viagem” é o destino. Finalmente, foram identificadas implicações cruciais para grupos de BA, empreendedores e todo o ecossistema dos BA. A experiência de BA é pessoal e não delegável. Portanto, os BA não devem ser impedidos pelos grupos organizados de alcançar os seus objetivos pessoais mais profundos alinhados com as suas vidas. Grupos profissionalizados e empreendedores devem criar condições para permitir que os BA vivam a experiência que pretendem viver, sendo encorajados a atingir os seus objetivos mais importantes. Se assim for, os BA sentir-se-ão mais satisfeitos e aumentarão as suas oportunidades de reinvestir e permanecer a longo prazo na carreira de BA.

Using artist and wood engraver Agnes Miller Parker’s career as a case study, Kristin Bluemel argues that the so-called wood engraving revival reached its symbolic consolidation as an elite practice for the masses only upon the successful integration of Miller Parker’s wood engravings in the 1930s nature books of Victor Gollancz. Miller Parker’s illustrated editions of H. E. Bates’s Through the Woods (1936) and Down the River (1937) confirmed in the public imagination associations of the black and white forms of wood engraving with rustic landscapes and natural subjects even as it was seen to ‘elevate’ into art the mass marketed Gollancz books in which these wood engravings appeared. This chapter shows how circulations between antique ‘craft’, modern reproductive print technologies, and rural subjects placed Parker and her art at the centre of the drama of modernity even as she tried to conduct a quiet life on Britain’s rural peripheries.

Ecological living requires what Robin Wall Kimmerer describes as “grammars of animacy,” which recognize and respect the being of all life and allow relationships with other-than-human beings. Creativity is a mothering power, which cannot be understood as purely female or biological. Mothering for social justice characterizes those who create community, who love and help, who decide, who act. Man’s motherfucking is countered with cuntspeak, telling the truth, laying down the law of respect, and conjuring other worlds. While the motherfucker claims omnipotence, power over all, the “Mutha’ ” evokes cunctipotence, the conjoined power of all.

Some years ago a friend of mine, Stuart Mace, gave me a letter opener hand-carved from a piece of rosewood. Over his 70-some years Stuart had become an accomplished wood craftsman, photographer, dog trainer, gourmet cook, teacher, raconteur, skier, naturalist, and allaround legend in his home town of Aspen, Colorado. High above Aspen, Stuart and his wife, Isabel, operated a shop called Toklat, which in Eskimo means “alpine headwaters,” featuring an array of woodcrafts, Navajo rugs, jewelry, fish fossils, and photography. He would use his free time in summers to rebuild parts of a ghost town called Ashcroft for the U.S. Forest Service. He charged nothing for his time and labor. For groups venturing up the mountain from Aspen, he and Isabel would cook dinners featuring local foods cooked with style and simmered over great stories about the mountains, the town, and their lives. Stuart was seldom at a loss for words.His living, if that is an appropriate word for a how a Renaissance man earns his keep, was made as a woodworker. He and his sons crafted tables and cabinetwork with exquisite inlaid patterns using an assortment of woods from forests all over the world. A Mace table was like no other, and so was its price. Long before it was de rigueur to do so, Stuart bought his wood from forests managed for long-term ecological health. The calibration between ecological talk and do wasn’t a thing for Stuart. He paid attention to details. I first met Stuart in 1981. I was living in the Ozarks at the time and part of an educational organization that included, among other things, a farm and steam-powered sawmill. In the summer of 1981 one of our projects was to provide two tractor-trailer loads of oak beams for the Rocky Mountain Institute being built near Old Snowmass. Stuart advised us about cutting and handling large timber, about which we knew little. From that time forward Stuart and I would see each other several times a year either when he traveled through Arkansas or when I wandered into Aspen in search of relief from Arkansas summers. He taught me a great deal, not so much about wood per se as about the relation of ecology, economics, craftwork, generosity, and good-heartedness. I last saw Stuart in a hospital room shortly before he died of cancer in June 1993.

El texto analiza los componentes paisajísticos de la ciudad-racimo, una tipología de ciudad fragmentada con características morfológicas propias, que se ha desarrollado en España desde la aprobación de la ley del suelo de 1976 y que continúa en la actualidad. El crecimiento residencial se organiza a partir del desarrollo de sectores independientes, delimitados entre sí por la infraestructura viaria principal de la ciudad. Como consecuencia surgen zonas de borde entre unos barrios y otros; además, aparecen dos nuevos tipos de calle, que denominaremos "calle-plaza" y "avenida de frontera"; por último, se comprueba cómo la ciudad-racimo se muestra incapaz de generar nuevas grandes calles, en el sentido histórico y paisajístico del término. Para describir estos elementos se realiza un análisis visual de distintos ejemplos existentes en Cáceres, ciudad española de tipo medio. El texto concluye con una discusión donde se reflexiona sobre la idoneidad o no del modelo de crecimiento en racimo. The text analyses the visual elements of the city-bunch, a kind of fragmented city with own morphological characteristics whose origin can be find in the sucessive land legislation adopted since 1976. Residential developments are planned into independent sectors and around the main urban road network. It thus produce defined edges between neighbourhoods; moreover two new kinds of street are appeared, called "street-place" and "boundary avenue"; finally it confirms that the city-bunch is unable to create new great streets, in the historical and landscaping sense of the word. A visual analyse of existing examples in Cáceres, a mediumsize Spanish city, is made to describe these elements. The text concludes with a discussion on the city-buch model of development.

Ecology and environmental protection have been discussed more and more in the last few years. This trend was also affected by the construction and architecture department. Concepts such as green building, environmentally friendly materials, alternative energy sources and energy-efficient construction systems of buildings are depressed. All of this comes under the name "Green Buildings". Wood-based construction and material solutions are a response to these trends. Investors and users are gradually starting to think more environmentally friendly and therefore many times also make decisions for wood-based constructions. There are several systems that fall into the category of so-called crushed buildings. The aim of this work is to provide a look at the "greener" options offered in the construction industry with an emphasis on their energy and thermal characteristics. The subject of the research was selected structural parts of timber-based buildings applied to model constructions by means of which selected thermal-technical characteristics were evaluated. This work points out the differences between the compared design variants of wooden buildings in terms of their ability to effectively save energy sources for heating inserted during the operation of wood-based buildings.

Although work remains on the Buffalo Rail, it clearly has shown potential to increase the safety performance of guardrail system throughout the world.

Semantic visualization integrates topic modeling and visualization, such that every document is associated with a topic distribution as well as visualization coordinates on a low-dimensional Euclidean space. We address the problem of semantic visualization for short texts. Such documents are increasingly common, including tweets, search snippets, news headlines, or status updates. Due to their short lengths, it is difficult to model semantics as the word co-occurrences in such a corpus are very sparse. Our approach is to incorporate auxiliary information, such as word embeddings from a larger corpus, to supplement the lack of co-occurrences. This requires the development of a novel semantic visualization model that seamlessly integrates visualization coordinates, topic distributions, and word vectors. We propose a model called GaussianSV, which outperforms pipelined baselines that derive topic models and visualization coordinates as disjoint steps, as well as semantic visualization baselines that do not consider word embeddings.

Named entity recognition (NER) is a fundamental task in the natural language processing (NLP) area. Recently, representation learning methods (e.g., character embedding and word embedding) have achieved promising recognition results. However, existing models only consider partial features derived from words or characters while failing to integrate semantic and syntactic information (e.g., capitalization, inter-word relations, keywords, lexical phrases, etc.) from multi-level perspectives. Intuitively, multi-level features can be helpful when recognizing named entities from complex sentences. In this study, we propose a novel framework called attention-based multi-level feature fusion (AMFF), which is used to capture the multi-level features from different perspectives to improve NER. Our model consists of four components to respectively capture the local character-level, global character-level, local word-level, and global word-level features, which are then fed into a BiLSTM-CRF network for the final sequence labeling. Extensive experimental results on four benchmark datasets show that our proposed model outperforms a set of state-of-the-art baselines.

Educational texts for children have two distinctly differing purposes: their readers must understand them and at the same time learn new words from them. It seems important and useful to be able to automatically detect words that may be unfamiliar to children of different ages. A challenging task is to identify words that readers perceive as familiar and understandable, but in fact understand them incorrectly. We propose a metric, called word deceptiveness, which is based on surveying and calculated as the product of the number of those respondents who mark the word as familiar by the number of those who correctly determine its meaning. We conducted a series of experiments and discovered several deceptive words in Russian. Several hypothetical mechanisms for the emergence of such words have been identified. In general, these are closeness to other, more familiar linguistic units: words, morphemes and word formation models. Future work will include an endeavor to learn to identify deceptive words on the basis of various linguistic factors.

The impressions evoked by textures are called affective textures, and are considered to be important in evaluating and judging the quality of an object. And, technologies for understanding and controlling sensory textures are needed in product design. In this study, we propose a BTF prediction method using DNN as a first attempt to generate textures based on affective texture recognition. The method uses a series of continuously varying viewpoint angles of a texture image as the input signal. This method enables the generation of texture images with continuously changing angles. We tested the validity of the proposed method by using textile, wood and paper. The results show that the proposed method is effective for predicting diffuse reflection optical properties and irregular and regular patterns.

Hashtags have always been important elements in many social network platforms and micro-blog services. Semantic understanding of hashtags is a critical and fundamental task for many applications on social networks, such as event analysis, theme discovery, information retrieval, etc. However, this task is challenging due to the sparsity, polysemy, and synonymy of hashtags. In this paper, we investigate the problem of hashtag embedding by combining the short text content with the various heterogeneous relations in social networks. Specifically, we first establish a network with hashtags as its nodes. Hierarchically, each of the hashtag nodes is associated with a set of tweets and each tweet contains a set of words. Then we devise an embedding model, called Hashtag2Vec, which exploits multiple relations of hashtag-hashtag, hashtag-tweet, tweet-word, and word-word relations based on the hierarchical heterogeneous network. In addition to embedding the hashtags, our proposed framework is capable of embedding the short social texts as well. Extensive experiments are conducted on two real-world datasets, and the results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

New scores and new sounds for voice and clarinet Astrid Kvalbein and Gjertrud Pedersen, Norwegian Academy of Music What is this thing called a score, and how do we relate to it as performers, in order to realize a musical work? This is the fundamental question of this exposition. As a duo we have related to scores in a variety of ways over the years: from the traditional reading and interpreting of sheet music of works by distant (some dead) composers, to learning new works in dialogue with living composers and to taking part in the creative processes from the commissioning of a work to its premiere and beyond. This reflective practice has triggered many questions: could the score for instance be conceptualized as a contract, in which some elements are negotiable and others are not? Where two equal parts, the performer(s) and the composer might have qualitatively different assignments on how to realize the music? Finally: might reflecting on such questions influence our interpretative practices? To shed light on these issues, we take as examples three works from our recent repertoire: Ragnhild Berstad’s Vevtråd (Weaving thread, 2010), Jan Martin Smørdal’s The Lesser Nighthawk (2012) and Lene Grenager’s Tre eller blod (Wood or blood, 2005). We will share – attempt to unfold – some of the experiences gained from working with this music, in close collaboration and dialogue with the composers. Observing the processes from a certain temporal distance, we see how our attitudes as a duo has developed over a longer span of time, into a more confident 'we'.

Rugose wood is a complex disease of grapevines, characterized by modification of the woody cylinder of affected vines. The control of rugose wood is based on the production of healthy propagation material. Detection of rugose wood in grapevines is difficult and expensive: budwood from tested plants is grafted onto sensitive Vitis indicators and the appearance of symptoms is monitored for 3 years. The etiology of rugose wood is complex and has not yet been elucidated. Several elongated clostero-like viruses are consistently found in affected vines; one of them, grapevine virus A (GVA), is closely associated with Kober stem grooving, a component of the rugose wood complex. GVA has a single-stranded RNA genome of 7349 nucleotides, excluding a polyA tail at the 3' terminus. The GVA genome includes five open reading frames (ORFs 1-5). ORF 4, which encodes for the coat protein of GVA, is the only ORF for which the function was determined experimentally. The original objectives of this research were: 1- To produce antisera to the structural and non-structural proteins of GVA and GVB and to use these antibodies to establish an effective detection method. 2- Develop full length infectious cDNA clones of GVA and GVB. 3- Study the roll of GVA and GVB in the etiology of the grapevine rugose wood disease. 4- Determine the function of Trichovirus (now called Vitivirus) encoded genes in the virus life cycle. Each of the ORFs 2, 3, 4 and 5 genes of GVA were cloned and expressed in E. coli and used to produce antisera. Both the CP (ORF 4) and the putative MP (ORF 3) were detected with their corresponding antisera in-GVA infected N. benthamiana and grapevine. The MP was first detected at an early stage of the infection, 6-12 h after inoculation, and the CP 2-3 days after inoculation. The MP could be detected in GVA-infected grapevines that tested negative for CP, both with CP antiserum and with a commercially available ELISA kit. Antisera to ORF 2 and 5 encoded proteins could react with the recombinant proteins but failed to detect both proteins in GVA infected plants. A full-length cDNA clone of grapevine virus A (GVA) was constructed downstream from the bacteriophage T7 RNA polymerase promoter. Capped in vitro transcribed RNA was infectious in N. benthamiana and N. clevelandii plants. Symptoms induced by the RNA transcripts or by the parental virus were indistinguishable. The infectivity of the in vitro-transcribed RNA was confirmed by serological detection of the virus coat and movement proteins and by observation of virions by electron microscopy. The full-length clone was modified to include a gus reporter gene and gus activity was detected in inoculated and systemic leaves of infected plants. Studies of GVA mutants suggests that the coat protein (ORF 4) is essential for cell to cell movement, the putative movement protein (ORF 3) indeed functions as a movement protein and that ORF 2 is not required for virus replication, cell to cell or systemic movement. Attempts to infect grapevines by in-vitro transcripts, by inoculation of cDNA construct in which the virus is derived by the CaMV 35S promoter or by approach grafting with infected N. benthamiana, have so far failed. Studies of the subcellular distribution of GFP fusion with each of ORF 2, 3 and 4 encoded protein showed that the CP fusion protein accumulated as a soluble cytoplasmatic protein. The ORF 2 fusion protein accumulated in cytoplasmatic aggregates. The MP-GFP fusion protein accumulated in a large number of small aggregates in the cytoplasm and could not move from cell to cell. However, in conditions that allowed movement of the fusion protein from cell to cell (expression by a PVX vector or in young immature leaves) the protein did not form cytoplasmatic aggregates but accumulated in the plasmodesmata.

Previous results for combining decision procedures for the word problem in the non-disjoint case do not apply to equational theories induced by modal logics - which are not disjoint for sharing the theory of Boolean algebras. Conversely, decidability results for the fusion of modal logics are strongly tailored towards the special theories at hand, and thus do not generalize to other types of equational theories. In this paper, we present a new approach for combining decision procedures for the word problem in the non-disjoint case that applies to equational theories induced by modal logics, but is not restricted to them. The known fusion decidability results for modal logics are instances of our approach. However, even for equational theories induced by modal logics our results are more general since they are not restricted to so-called normal modal logics.

Amphibians are a Vital Sign indicator for monitoring long-term ecosystem health in seven national park units that comprise the Great Lakes Network. We present here the results for 2019 amphibian monitoring at Mississippi National River and Recreation Area (MISS). Appendices contain tabular summaries for six years of cumulative results. The National Park Service Great Lakes Inventory and Monitoring Network established 10 permanent acoustic amphibian monitoring sites at MISS in 2015. Acoustic samples are collected by placing automated recorders with omnidirectional stereo microphones at each of the 10 sampling sites. Temperature loggers co-located with the recorders also collect air temperature during the sampling period. Eight of the nine species of frog and toad known to occur at MISS were found in 2019. The most well distributed species were Eastern American Toad, Gray Treefrog, Green Frog, and Northern Leopard Frog. Rarer are Blanchard’s Cricket Frog, Cope’s Gray Treefrog, Wood Frog, and Boreal Chorus Frog. American Bullfrog has not yet been detected on GLKN monitored sites but has been recently confirmed nearby (Pigs Eye Lake). Two of the ten sites—MISS02, MISS04—were not sampled in 2019 due to flooding, and occupancy of early calling species at MISS06 was determined inconclusive due to a late sampling start. MISS07 was also deployed late and results may contain some false absences due to late sampling. We expanded analyses and reporting in 2018 to address calling phenology and to provide a second metric for tracking changes in abundance (as opposed to occupancy) across years. Occupancy analyses track whether or not a site was occupied by a species. Abundance is tracked by assessing how the maximum call intensity changes on sites across years, and by how many automated detections are reported from sites across years. Using two independent survey methods, manual and automated, with large sample sizes continues to return reliable results, providing a confident record of site occupancy for most species. There were some data collection issues in 2019, with two ARS units not deployed and two others with late start dates. This did reduce our ability to assess some sites and species. Summaries of 2019 data are shown in Appendices A, B and C, and cumulative data collection result summaries are provided in Appendix E. Since temperature logs show that the threshold of ≥40°F was already exceeded by 1 April in 2019, we recommend a 15 March start date for future data collection.

The monitoring program detected all seven species of frog and toad known to occur at ISRO in 2019, with Eastern American Toad, Green Frog and Spring Peeper occurring at almost every site sampled, and Wood Frog at six sites. Gray Treefrog, Mink Frog, and Boreal Chorus Frog were found at only one or two sites each. Northern Leopard Frog has yet to be confirmed at ISRO in this GLKN monitoring program. We expanded analyses and reporting in 2018 to address calling phenology and to provide a second metric for tracking changes in abundance (as opposed to occupancy) across years. Occupancy analyses track whether or not a site was occupied by a species. Abundance is tracked by assessing how the maximum call intensity changes on sites across years, and by how many automated detections are reported from sites across years. Using two independent survey methods, manual and automated, with large sample sizes continues to return reliable results, providing a confident record of site occupancy for most species. There were no significant data collection issues in 2019. Three units stopped collecting data early but these data gaps did not compromise sampling rigor or analysis. Since temperature logs show that the threshold of ≥40°F was often exceeded by 1 April in 2019, making 15 March a start date for data collection may be considered if park personnel feel snow and ice cover would be reduced enough by that date as well. We do recommend making sure that temperature logger solar shields in future are not hanging in such a manner as to be banging against anything in a breeze, as this contaminates the soundscape

Remaining sites successfully collected data as programmed. Cumulative program result summaries since inception are provided in appendices. Temperature logs in 2019 showed that the threshold of ≥40°F was uniformly exceeded by 1 May, hence we recommend making 10 April the target start date for data collection in future. This could be accomplished by fall deployment of recorders on delayed starts. We also recommend making sure that recorders are mounted 6–10 feet high to better survey the soundscape with less interference from foliage, and that temperature loggers be placed within solar shields.

The article investigates functional techniques of extralinguistic expression in multimedia texts; the effectiveness of figurative expressions as a reaction to modern events in Ukraine and their influence on the formation of public opinion is shown. Publications of journalists, broadcasts of media resonators, experts, public figures, politicians, readers are analyzed. The language of the media plays a key role in shaping the worldview of the young political elite in the first place. The essence of each statement is a focused thought that reacts to events in the world or in one’s own country. The most popular platform for mass information and social interaction is, first of all, network journalism, which is characterized by mobility and unlimited time and space. Authors have complete freedom to express their views in direct language, including their own word formation. Phonetic, lexical, phraseological and stylistic means of speech create expression of the text. A figurative word, a good aphorism or proverb, a paraphrased expression, etc. enhance the effectiveness of a multimedia text. This is especially important for headlines that simultaneously inform and influence the views of millions of readers. Given the wide range of issues raised by the Internet as a medium, research in this area is interdisciplinary. The science of information, combining language and social communication, is at the forefront of global interactions. The Internet is an effective source of knowledge and a forum for free thought. Nonlinear texts (hypertexts) – «branching texts or texts that perform actions on request», multimedia texts change the principles of information collection, storage and dissemination, involving billions of readers in the discussion of global issues. Mastering the word is not an easy task if the author of the publication is not well-read, is not deep in the topic, does not know the psychology of the audience for which he writes. Therefore, the study of media broadcasting is an important component of the professional training of future journalists. The functions of the language of the media require the authors to make the right statements and convincing arguments in the text. Journalism education is not only knowledge of imperative and dispositive norms, but also apodictic ones. In practice, this means that there are rules in media creativity that are based on logical necessity. Apodicticity is the first sign of impressive language on the platform of print or electronic media. Social expression is a combination of creative abilities and linguistic competencies that a journalist realizes in his activity. Creative self-expression is realized in a set of many important factors in the media: the choice of topic, convincing arguments, logical presentation of ideas and deep philological education. Linguistic art, in contrast to painting, music, sculpture, accumulates all visual, auditory, tactile and empathic sensations in a universal sign – the word. The choice of the word for the reproduction of sensory and semantic meanings, its competent use in the appropriate context distinguishes the journalist-intellectual from other participants in forums, round tables, analytical or entertainment programs. Expressive speech in the media is a product of the intellect (ability to think) of all those who write on socio-political or economic topics. In the same plane with him – intelligence (awareness, prudence), the first sign of which (according to Ivan Ogienko) is a good knowledge of the language. Intellectual language is an important means of organizing a journalistic text. It, on the one hand, logically conveys the author’s thoughts, and on the other – encourages the reader to reflect and comprehend what is read. The richness of language is accumulated through continuous self-education and interesting communication. Studies of social expression as an important factor influencing the formation of public consciousness should open up new facets of rational and emotional media broadcasting; to trace physical and psychological reactions to communicative mimicry in the media. Speech mimicry as one of the methods of disguise is increasingly becoming a dangerous factor in manipulating the media. Mimicry is an unprincipled adaptation to the surrounding social conditions; one of the most famous examples of an animal characterized by mimicry (change of protective color and shape) is a chameleon. In a figurative sense, chameleons are called adaptive journalists. Observations show that mimicry in politics is to some extent a kind of game that, like every game, is always conditional and artificial.
