Cystic adenomyosis is a rare type of uterine adenomyosis, mainly seen in young women, which is often characterized by severe dysmenorrhea. The quality of life and reproductive function of young women could be affected by misdiagnosis and delayed treatment. At present, there are no universal guidelines and consensus. We report two cases of patients with cystic adenomyosis in juveniles treated with high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablation. In the first case, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) indicated a cystic mass of 2.0 cm × 3.1 cm × 2.4 cm in the uterus. After she underwent HIFU treatment, her pelvic MRI showed a mass of 1.1 × 2.4 cm in size, and her dysmenorrhea symptoms gradually disappeared. In the second case, a pelvic MRI indicated a 5.1 cm × 3.3 cm × 4.7 cm cystic mass in the uterus. After she underwent HIFU and combined four consecutive cycles of GnRH-a treatment, the lesion shrunk 1.2 cm ×1.4 cm × 1.6 cm, without dysmenorrhea. Simultaneously, the report reviewed 14 cases of juvenile cystic adenomyosis over the last ten years. HIFU or HIFU-combined drugs were safe and effective in treating juvenile cystic adenomyosis, but multicenter and prospective studies may be necessary to validate this in the future.

Cutaneous juvenile xanthogranuloma is an uncommon disorder usually arising during infancy. Systemic involvement of juvenile xanthogranuloma remains rare, and there are no published guidelines to date on screening extracutaneous manifestations in these patients. Ocular involvement is the most common extracutaneous manifestation of juvenile xanthogranuloma. We present the case of an infant with disseminated juvenile xanthogranulomas and associated ocular involvement and present a review of literature, focusing on identifying risk factors for ocular and systemic involvement in disseminated cases.

Mutations in theALS2gene cause three distinct disorders: infantile ascending hereditary spastic paraplegia, juvenile primary lateral sclerosis, and autosomal recessive juvenile amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. We present a review of the literature and the case of a 16-year-old boy who is, to the best of our knowledge, the first Portuguese case with infantile ascending hereditary spastic paraplegia. Clinical investigations included sequencing analysis of the ALS2 gene, which revealed a heterozygous mutation in exon 5 (c.1425_1428del p.G477Afs*19) and a heterozygous and previously unreported variant in exon 3 (c.145G>A p.G49R). We also examined 42 reported cases on the clinical characteristics and neurophysiological and imaging studies of patients with known ALS2 gene mutations sourced from PubMed. This showed that an overlap of phenotypic manifestations can exist in patients with infantile ascending hereditary spastic paraplegia, juvenile primary lateral sclerosis, and juvenile amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Fibroadenomas are common benign breast tumors. Fibroadenomas that exceed 5 cm in diameter, weigh more than 500 g, or replace more than four-fifths of the breast are characterized as giant. A fibroadenoma diagnosed in patients during childhood or adolescence is characterized as juvenile. An extensive PubMed search of the literature in English up until August 2022 was performed. In addition, a rare case of a gigantic fibroadenoma in an 11-year-old premenarchal girl who was referred to our adolescent gynecology center is presented here. Eighty-seven cases of giant juvenile fibroadenomas have been reported in the literature along with our case. Patients with giant juvenile fibroadenoma presented at a mean age of 13.92 years and usually after menarche. Juvenile fibroadenomas are usually unilateral, occurring either in the right or the left breast; the majority of them are diagnosed when they are already more than 10 cm in size, and they are most frequently treated with total lump excision. Differential diagnosis includes phyllodes tumors and pseudo-angiomatous stromal hyperplasia. Conservative management is feasible, but surgical excision is recommended to patients with suspicious imaging features or when the mass grows rapidly.

Introduction: PRES, as a complication of juvenile lupus, is rarely reported in the literature. In this study, six juvenile lupus patients admitted with diagnosis of PRES were assessed on the basis of clinical characteristics, imaging findings, disease activity status, treatment response and prognosis. Methodology: Six juvenile (≤ 16 years) lupus patients with a diagnosis of PRES were included. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory features and outcomes of all six patients were noted. Literature review was performed on PubMed search forum. Search terms in English included Juvenile SLE, Lupus and PRES. Result: The youngest patient was seven years old while the oldest was sixteen years. All patients had history of lupus nephritis , presented with seizure and hypertension. In imaging, four out of six patients had hyperintensities in atypical distribution suggesting atypical PRES. All the patients had significant clinical recovery with resolution of hyperintensities in five out of six patients on repeat imaging. Conclusion: Juvenile lupus with PRES is considered an unusual neurologic manifestation triggered by multiple factors. It can be stipulated that PRES in juvenile lupus cases often remain undiagnosed. Early suspicion and treatment institution with reversal of triggers can result in a favorable outcome in these patients.

Abstract Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a rare benign tumour of vascular origin found in adolescent males, originating around the sphenopalatine foramen. Although the exact pathogenesis of the tumour is not yet known, natural history and growth patterns can be predicted. JNA progressively involves the nasopharynx, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, pterygopalatine fossa, infratemporal fossa and, in severe cases, an orbital or intracranial extension can be seen. Early diagnosis based on clinical examination and imaging is mandatory to ensure the best resectability of the tumour, as small to moderate tumours can be managed exclusively endoscopically. Preoperative angiography can reveal the vascular sources and allow embolization to prevent significant bleeding. We present a brief literature review followed by our case series of endoscopic removal of 7 juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibromas.

Objective. Overlap of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus (JSLE) is a rare clinical condition in children. This condition has been described as RHUPUS syndrome. Prevalence of this syndrome and 3 cases are reported in this paper.Cases Presentation. During 10 years, 3 patients with SLE had chronic arthritis before or after diagnosis of SLE. Prevalence of this disorder in JSLE was 2.5%. Two patients were females and one of them was a male. According to our review, mean delay between chronic joint involvement and JSLE diagnosis was 50.1 months. In our case report, two females had joint erosion and one of them died due to heart failure, but in the literature review, just 45% cases had joint erosion and 70% cases were polyarticulare form.Conclusion. RHUPUS is unusual presentation of lupus in children. It seems that clinical feature and outcome of RHUPUS syndrome are different in children due to difference between RA and JIA. We suggest juvenile RHUPUS for overlap of JIA and JSLE.

Hirayama disease is a rare neurological condition and is characterized by a sporadic juvenile muscular atrophy of distal upper extremity in young males. The disease is more prevalent in Japan and other Asian countries, though a few cases have been reported in Western countries as well. It manifests as a self-limiting, gradually progressive atrophic weakness of forearm and hand. The anterior displacement of posterior dura during neck flexion leading to cervical cord atrophy has been hypothesized. We discuss a case of a 21-year-old male patient with progressive distal upper extremity weakness, diagnosed with Hirayama disease, and literature review for the same. Tanto as tradições orais apropriadas pela Literatura Infantil e Juvenil quanto pela Literatura de maneira geral contribuem para a formação da identidade cultural, porque trazem elementos da cultura através dos quais nos reconhecemos e nos identificamos pelos laços de pertencimento. Destacamos como objetivo precípuo deste trabalho a imersão no processo de construção da identidade cultural cabo-verdiana, híbrida e plural, a fim de dar visibilidade a estratégias de que lança mão a literatura para se apropriar tanto do patrimônio oral quando das vivências históricas para dinamizar o imaginário infantil e juvenil. A oralidade, resgatada em vários números da Revista Claridade (1936 e 1937), evidencia-se na narrativa oral O Lobo e o Chibinho, transposta para a linguagem literária por Baltasar Lopes, no excerto Bibia, do romance Chiquinho, e ainda em cinco capítulos dessa obra publicados naquela revista. O imaginário infantil e juvenil crioulo será ainda por nós analisado a partir da leitura de Infância, primeira parte de Chiquinho, e da obra Comandante Hussi, de Jorge Araújo, em que enfatizamos diálogos interculturais e intertextuais ensejados pela paródia a texto jornalístico que motivou a obra. As categorias teóricas em que apoiamos nossas análises foram, respectivamente, identidade cultural (Stuart Hall) e hibridação (Néstor Canclini).The oral traditions appropriated by Childrens and Youth Literature as well as by Literature in general contributed to the cultural identity formation since they have cultural elements which we recognize and identify ourselves with through belonging ties. The main aim of this paper is the immersion in the Cape Verdean process of cultural identity formation, hybrid and plural, in order to give visibility to strategies resorted by Literature to incorporate both the oral heritage and the historical experiences to boost Children´s and juvenile imaginary. The oral tradition, rescued in many of the Claridade magazine texts (1936 and 1937), become clear in the oral narrative O Lobo e o Chibinho, transposed to the literally language by Baltasar Lopes, in the excerpt Bibia, from Chiquinho novel, including in more five chapters in the same edition. The Creole Children´s and Youth imaginary will be analysed in this paper by the readings of Infância, in the first part of Chiquinho, and of the text Comandante Hussi, by Jorge Araújo, emphasizing intercultural and intertextual dialogues occasioned by parody to journalistic text that motivated the work. The theoretical categories that support the analyses in this paper were, respectively, cultural identity (Stuart Hall) and hybridization (Néstor Canclini).

The emotion description is the core of juvenile novels. People maintain their life by sharing emotions, and growing teenagers need more emotional feeding to enrich their life. However, emotional obsession is also the center part in adolescence. Therefore, a lively description of plots could give teenagers suggestions when they face problems as well as console their hearts with suitable company. Various themes in the researches of juvenile novels have been discussed besides “emotion description,” and this is the main reason for the title of this research. In the part of reference, first of all, the course of change and development of “Chiuko’s Modern Children’s Literature Award” is explored. Second, the researcher collects 9 journals and 12 academic theses, which all select the prize works in “Chiuko’s Modern Children’s Literature Award” as their research texts. And then, summarizes each thesis by its published year to analyze the themes discussed most. Next, the researcher focuses on selected Chiuko’s juvenile novels to read particularly to investigate the emotion description model presented in these prize works. In addition, the expression skills in this emotion description model are also explored. Finally, the part following then is the conclusion. 1. The result shows that the emotional relationship in adolescence develops various aspects. First, the constraint is replaced by the respect in the love between parents and children. Second, the influence of their generation is increased gradually. Third, teenagers need more understanding and empathy from their teacher. Fourth, there is a tendency towards getting open in the love between men and women. Last, the company of animals has positive influence for teenagers. 2. In order to explore the emotion description in Taiwan juvenile novels, the researcher divides the teenage emotions into five aspects to have clear explanation. The outcome demonstrates that the themes of the love between parents and children, and of the friendship are more described in these novels. 3. Even though there is no obvious difference in the descriptions between juvenile and general novels, as a result of teenager’s reading comprehension has not been developed well, the expression skills in juvenile novels have to stress more on actions and plots than narration and argument. Therefore, juvenile novels would lead teenagers into a wonderland successfully. In sum, the researcher hopes that the result of this study will be helpful to the authors of juvenile novels, and also suggests the themes in juvenile novels will be fit for their needs in the future.

ABSTRACT This essay aims to explore into the issue about parent-child relationship presented in works which have been honored the “Chiu Ko Juvenile & Children's Literature Award” of its first to twelvieth term of the award. This issue is classified into three aspects of parent-child image, parents’ upbringing type and parent-child conflict for an analysis of the presented condition from parent-child interactive relationship, subsequently followed by a research into the issue concerning the inner feeling and puzzlement presented by juveniles in the parent-child interactive relationship, in the hopes of having the related research offered as data and information available for reading therapy. This research takes literature analysis and textual analysis as research methods, and the findings are given as below: 1. The aspect of parent-child image: Father is shaped as the image of a mentor and helpful friend mostly, representing the gradual change of father’s image. As presented a multi-image, a mother in one parental family is characterized with traits of pursuing self-growth, expanding life scope and pursuing career achievement. In a single parent family, a mother, however, is presented the image as a strong woman as she may reject children’s contact with their father; for a step mother, her image is presented as one who can accept her step children with her broad-mindedness, while children’s image will present the positive image of kind nature. 2. Parental upbringing types: Parents’ upbringing and disciplinary attitude and methods focus on “authoritative type” and “authoritarian type,” among which the father will present his authoritative type far more than that of the mother, while the mother will give unequal stress on the practice of authoritarian type on her upbringing. Parents who practice authoritative type will develop good interactions with their children, while an instable marriage relationship filled with heavy-loaded jobs will enable parents to adopt “authoritarian type” and “neglect type” on their upbringing, thus causing barriers for their interactions with their children and leading to alienated parent-child relationship. 3. Parent-child conflict: The source of parent-child conflict lies in either both parties’ different attitude toward the upbringing and cognition over the behaviors or the barriers to parent-child communication. Issues of conflict appear in family relationship and school life frequently. The circumstance of parent-child conflict presented in this essay is in a trend of mild one with the majority to be presented in verbal conflict. The important role played by “coordinator” in parent-child conflict incident will make the deadlock parent-child relationship to be solved as parents will be willing to work with their children to bring solutions for their conflicts by a practice of cooperative methods due to parents’ adjustment of their upbringing methods. 4. Juveniles’ inner puzzlement: The themes of “shape of self-image,” “puzzlement over social gender role” and “thirst for parents’ love and attachment” are those puzzled and struggling ones for juveniles. Finally, according to the conclusions of research, I do hereby bring up some proposals based on works of creation and juvenile novels taking parent-child relationship as the subject matter for your reference.

Text in EnglishThis study focuses on the strategies and devices used to create humour in children’s literature. No language is a replica of another language and it is generally accepted that a translator has to be creative in order to make the Source Text (ST) meaning available to the Target Text (TT) reader. The research conducted in this study aims to fill a gap regarding the application of humour in the rather under-researched field of children’s literature. A descriptive framework was used to conduct this qualitative study in order to be able to describe the linguistic strategies and devices used to translate the English source text by Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator into the Afrikaans Target Text, Charlie en die Groot Glashyser by Kobus Geldenhuys. Literary devices to create humour, employed by both the writer and the translator, were identified and analysed. Interviews and reading sessions with ST learners (English) as well as TT learners (Afrikaans) were conducted in order to observe their non-verbal reactions as well as document their verbal comments to complement the data obtained from the textual analysis. The textual analysis showed that the literary device most frequently applied in the ST was the simile and the main trend regarding the transference of humorous devices to the TT was to retain the device with formal equivalence. The most popular translation strategy was direct translation with the most important shifts identified on morphological and lexical level and shifts in expressive and evoked meaning were relatively low. With regard to the reading sessions, the most positive results from both groups of learners regarding humorous devices in the ST and TT were obtained for the device of inappropriate behaviour.

With the changes of social economy, family form alters. Although the main form of Taiwan family is core family, the number of grandparenting families has gradually increased according to the data of Directorate General of Budget. Confronting the transition of family form, especially the grandparenting families, grandparents and children are most influenced. The difficulties and challenges faced by grandparents and grandchildren in grandparenting families are what authors concerned. Authors demonstrated the life situations, physical and psychological conditions of grandparents and grandchildren, reflected the problems in the grandparenting families through their writing, which led children to care and accept grandparenting families. However, it is quite important whether authors can precisely describe the image and condition of grandparents and grandchildren. This study focused on text analysis, discussed the award-winning works with grandparenting families as backgrounds in the whole 20 sessions of ChiuKo Juvenile & Children’s Literature Award, and summarized the grandparents-grandchildren image, grandparents-grandchildren interaction relationship and children’s growth and enlightenment. Based on the research results, it was seemed that the grandparent- grandchildren images were mainly negative images except for intimate grandparent- grandchildren interaction relationship; as progress moves far ahead, the grandparent- grandchildren interaction relationship would tend to end up with harmonious relationship and positive description. The conflicts between grandparents and grandchildren were derived from their differences in personality traits and values, inappropriate parenting styles and psychological treatment, poor language communications, economic hardship and grandparents’ poor health; and most conflicts were language conflicts. The problems grandchildren had to face were negative emotions, social labels, missing their parents and seeking for self-positioning. There were various writings in the perspective of grandchildren’s growth. This thesis looks into the themes concerning long-lasting memories and pedological education under the historical context of Japanese Ruling, studying the authors’ alternate arrangement of plot between reality and imagination from three juvenile novels written in that era- “Smart Dad,” “Sunset in Taipei City,” “Plane Building by a Taiwanese Soldier.” The research sets an aim at the authors’ intention to raise issues concerning education and their notion of human sentiments and ethnic identification in Taiwanese society under Japanese reign. The statement will set basis on the fact that each author, having chosen different materials for the stories, adopted diverse narratives and methods of conveying the plots. Four analytical methods were drawn for perceiving the stories: “historical research method” for a comprehensive perception of the historical background; “text analytical method” for analysis of the plot, the characters, and the language; “educational psychology method” for analyzing the sentimentality and actions of the children in the stories; and “comprehensive analytical method” for a conclusive analysis. Given the limited number of literary works with such context, the three novels are considered rather valuable with regard to multiple issues in the last years of the Japanese governance: the ethnic mergence and conflict, domestic morality, juvenile development, and ethnic identification. The aforementioned issues help picture the original images conveyed to readers. The existing juvenile novels in Taiwan are faced with a lack of readers, a situation that seeks breakthrough from multi-dimensional narration of stories.

Stalking that elicits fear in the target is relatively rare below age 16. Case reports reveal that some children and adolescents exhibit stalking behavior, and research on college populations suggests that stalking behavior in late adolescence is not uncommon. Stalking is a theme seen in movies and children’s literature. The definition of stalking is used to distinguish stalking from developmentally normal following behavior commonly seen as a component of adolescent courtship, admiration, or crushes. This chapter reviews the literature on juvenile stalkers, including the frequency and patterns of juvenile stalking and the characteristics of juvenile stalkers. The chapter also provides suggestions for assessment, interventions, and legal responses in the management of the juvenile stalker. Some stalking-like behaviors are common in immature courtship behaviors of children and adolescents, but stalking characterized by repeated unwanted intrusion and communications that elicit fear in the target is relatively rare. In recent years, a number of published case reports suggest that some children and young adolescents exhibit stalking behavior, and research on college populations suggests that stalking behavior in late adolescence is not so uncommon. To help illustrate how pathological stalking overlaps with themes in normal development, this chapter begins with a survey of stalking in movies and children’s literature. The chapter then uses the definition of stalking to distinguish stalking from developmentally normal following behavior commonly seen as a component of adolescent courtship, admiration, or crushes. Literature on juvenile stalkers is then reviewed to provide a picture of how commonly stalking occurs, as well as the characteristics of juvenile stalkers. The chapter then considers certain other behaviors that resemble stalking and examines theories about how stalking behavior develops. Finally, the chapter discusses the important topic of managing the juvenile stalker, including assessment, interventions, and legal responses. Children and adolescents may be exposed to stalking behaviors and themes through television, books, and movies. The influence of media representations of crime and violence is an important avenue of exploration in general clinical work with children and adolescents.

Abstract The assessment of famous editions is more difficult than is sometimes supposed. Snap judgements can be made about other works of scholarship in a library or bookshop, but to criticize a textual critic it is desirable to have wrestled with the problems oneself, as well as to know the state of opinion before he came on the scene. That is a tall order with Housman’s Mamlius, so that with a few distinguished exceptions eulogies derive from Housman himself, but Juvenal at least is relatively familiar and intelligible. The present sketch is the sequel to my article in the Skutsch Festschnft, BIGS supplement 51 (1988), 86ff. (above, pp. 227ff.), where a number of proposals are made on the text of Juvenal. Apart from Housman himself, I have used particularly the texts of Jahn, Knoche, Clausen, and now J. RC. Martyn (Amsterdam, 1987), as well as the commentary by Courtney (note also his text of 1984).

Assessment of children with rheumatic diseases has evolved significantly over the past 20 years. Previously, assessment focused primarily on the measurement of disease activity status, an evaluation that provided information that was mainly physician-derived. More recently, emphasis has been placed on the need to incorporate estimates of physical, social, and mental functioning into health assessment. Consequently, there has been tremendous growth in the development of measurement instruments that evaluate health status, functional status, disability, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). An array of these broader instruments has been developed for children with rheumatic diseases. These latter measures are mainly patient-derived. Clearly, in an era of patient-centred care, the latter approach is critical to appropriate patient assessment. Despite this, such measurement is restricted to research studies rather than clinical practice. Most of these measures are used in the assessment of juvenile idiopathic arthritis; however, increasingly, measures are being developed for other diseases including juvenile dermatomyositis and juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus. Herein, we review the measures that are currently available to highlight their utility, with particular emphasis on their potential roles as supported by recent literature.

Abstract Media studies have been engaged in academic analysis of audiences for at least ninety years. As early as 1914, the Reverend J. J. Phelan used surveys to study movie preferences of children, and in 1915 William Healy published a book on the relationship between watching films and juvenile delinquency, basing his arguments on case studies (Jowett et al. 26). Since then, the mass audiences of film, and then radio and television, have produced a profitable field for reception research on both everyday and fan spectatorship. Scarcely a subject or method has not been explored in at least an introductory way (Staiger, Media). A rich literature exists on fans, cult movies, stars, readers of various subjectivities, and violence, horror, and sexually explicit materials.

This chapter continues the discussion of childhood undertaken in the previous chapter. Child rights are explored within the framework of universal human rights and the more confined limits of documents on rights ratified by Muslim-majority countries, such as the Cairo Declaration of Human Rights in Islam and the Declaration on the Rights and Care of the Child in Islam. It provides an overview of childhood in Islamic history, beginning with references to childhood in the Qur’an and continuing to a survey of classical and medieval Islamic medical and religious literature addressing the juvenile phases of human life. The education of children in the thought of classical Muslim thinkers, especially Ghazali, emphasizes the moral purpose of education and locates play and exercise within that frame. The chapter continues to discuss childhood in the modern Muslim thought, highlighting rites of passage, the gendering of children, and the role of education and literature in engendering the concept of modern childhood in the Western and Islamic worlds, using Egypt as a principal example of the growth of modern education in Islamic society.

Abstract In 1960, child psychiatrist Marshall D. Schechter reported a hundredfold increase of adopted patients in his practice compared with what would be expected in the general population. This claim (based on a small group of children seen by one psychiatrist), though reportedly based on a misinterpretation of the published adoption literature,2 received widespread publicity, reinforcing the notion that adoptees frequently have mental and psychiatric disturbances. Adoptees are overrepresented among mental health care recipients: about 8%–10% of children receiving in-patient or out-patient psychiatric services are adopted (range 2.4%–25%). However, the reasons for this are complex. Adoptive families may be more likely to seek help for problems because of their relative maturity, socioeconomic status, and familiarity with social service availability. Indeed, adoptees are underrepresented in juvenile court populations, possibly because adoptive parents seek psychiatric care if their child demonstrates delinquent or undesirable behaviors. Similarly, adoptees may be underrepresented among adult mental health populations,7 perhaps because psychological issues are addressed during the teenage years.

As we have seen in Chapter 3 (Prevalence of Delinquency), the phrase “juvenile delinquency” may refer to the “continuum of behavior that transgresses social norms,” ranging from socially unacceptable behavior (acting out in school) to status offenses (running away) to criminal acts (burglary). This broad definition sets wide boundaries on a discussion of prevention. Preventing disruptive behavior in the early elementary grades is quite a different task from preventing major criminal acts among high-school-age gangs. The former focuses more on altering individual and family functioning, while the latter involves alterations in the peer culture, the school experience, and the broader social environment. In any case, a review of the literature on prevention of delinquency produces few programs that can be cited as models of primary prevention at early or late stages. A very small number of programs could generate evidence that they stopped the onset of delinquent behavior. Interventions were cited, however, that have an indirect effect on later delinquency by modifying “acting out” and conduct disorders at very early ages. Many of the programs discussed in the literature focus on secondary prevention, working with adjudicated juvenile delinquents to lower the rates of recidivism (repeat offenses), and almost none of those appear to meet with great success. The dearth of successful prevention programs in the area of delinquency is not surprising in light of the complexity of the problem and its deep-seated causes. The usual difficulties with evaluation design are compounded in this field by murky definitions. Repeated reviews of literally thousands of studies have produced almost none with adequate evaluations. Leitenberg’s commentary on the “state-of-the-art” is not very encouraging: . . . My thoughts about primary prevention programs in delinquency tend to be pessimistic. Unless the larger political, organizational, economic and social issues are addressed . . . we will make small headway. . . . I think the most productive area is not within the realm of psychology, sociology, psychiatry, social work, or criminology—it is within the area of politics. . .

This chapter assesses Julian Tuwim's Utwory nieznane (Unknown Works), the title of which is somewhat misleading. The book is largely made up of cabaret pieces that were performed and known to the public; they simply were never published in written form. Still, the book's publication in 1999 was an important event, not only for poetry lovers and historians of literature, but also from a Jewish perspective. Jewish topics appear prominently and in many forms in this collection of poems, facsimiles, juvenilia, cabaret skits and songs, and private letters from various periods of the poet's life. This is in clear contradiction to the stereotype, predominant in Jewish historiography, of the pre-war Polish Jewish intelligentsia as thoroughly assimilated and uprooted. Tuwim's example demonstrates that the opposite was the case. Like many other writers, he was in constant dialogue with his Jewishness, defending it when attacked, but also critical of Jewish obscurantism.

In the first quarter of the nineteenth century, just a handful of children’s press titles were circulating, with the didactic and evangelical output of the Sunday Schools and Religious Tract Society dominating. From 1866 to 1914, more than 500 children’s periodicals came into circulation, featuring well over 80 newspaper ‘children’s columns’, as publishers sought to produce reading that increasingly reflected the common pursuits of the widest range of juveniles. This piece undertakes a chronological account of the periodical growth in children’s literature over the course of the century, including the development of the boy’s papers from the 1850s onwards, and moves by publishers to broaden appeal by producing unisex publications such as Cassell’s Little Folks. The second half of the nineteenth century saw development of ‘house’ periodicals of campaigning movements, such as the RSPCA’s Band of Mercy. From the mid-century, newspapers began featuring children’s columns written for children, with purpose of educating young readers, organising charitable work and acting as a forum for carrying epitaphs for child readers. Such themes are examined through the lens of the most successful children’s column, the Newcastle Weekly Chronicle’s Dicky Bird Society, which began in 1876.

This case report documents a rare cause of isosexual precocious puberty, a juvenile granulosa cell tumour of the ovary–and a brief literature review. A one year-old baby girl presented with mass abdomen, vaginal discharge and rapid onset of pubertal development. She underwent an exploratory laparotomy for tumour resection. Pathology reported a juvenile granulosa cell tumour of the ovary. Early stage granulosa cell tumor surgically treated has good prognosis. Adjuvant chemotherapy is not indicated in this setting.

Context: In the literature, there are few cases of Guillain Barré syndrome (GBS) in association with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). There is description of 19 neuropsychiatric syndromes associated with SLE, 12 of the central nervous system (CNS) and 7 of the peripheral nervous system (PNS). 10% of the patients with SLE and neurological manifestations have PNS complications. SLE is considered to have a late onset when it starts above 50 years of age and it consists in, on average, 26% of the total of individuals with SLE, however, in contrast to juvenile lupus, the number of studies is scarce. Case report: A patient diagnosed with late onset SLE who came to the emergency department due to seizure crisis and during the management, the patient developed an atypical form of GBS (motor, facial and bulbar), requiring mechanical ventilation and gastrostomy. The patient obtained a favorable outcome after pulse therapy and plasmapheresis. Conclusion: The atypical form of GBS is a very rare complication in patients with SLE, more studies need to be done for a standardized approach.

În demersul de față autorul ia în discuție practicile de cultură tradițională cu valoare de socializare juvenilă a tinerilor care au atins vârsta maturității. Actualizate în diverse contexte socio-culturale, obiceiurile de inițiere se înscriu în codul normativ al comunității, având rolul de a facilita trecerea tinerilor prin anumite protocoale sociale de integrare în rândul adulților. În majoritatea cazurilor, contextualizarea acestor obiceiuri avea loc în cadrul Horei (Jiocului, Jocului) satului, reprezentată ca o manifestare socio-culturală de anvergură în cadrul căreia își dădeau concursul instituția oamenilor în vârstă (ca sfătuitori și priveghetori asupra îndeplinirii cutumiare a rânduielii pământului) și instituția cetei de flăcăi (răspunzători de organizarea Horei satului și a obiceiurilor de inițiere într-o clasă de vârstă). Literatura de specialitate, pune la dispoziția cercetătorilor fenomenelor etnoculturale mai multe informații referitor la intrarea tinerilor în ceata flăcăilor/feciorilor, în timp ce inițierea fetelor nubile rămâne din anumite considerente, neclare încă, un subiect mai puțin cercetat. Studiul de față reprezintă o investigație mai aprofundată a practicilor de modificare a statutului indivizilor ajunși în pragul maturității și o sintetizare a informațiilor obținute în vederea înțelegerii semnificațiilor celor două scenarii inițiatice pe sexe.

Introduction: Congenital muscular dystrophies (CMDs) are a group of rare genetic muscle diseases that present at birth or during infancy with hypotonia and weakness. Multiple forms of CMDs are also associated with cerebral and ocular phenotypes. Recently, INPP5K mutations have been described associated with CMD, cataracts and cognitive impairment. The INPP5K gene, encodes SKIP, one of the enzymes that phosphorylate the 5-phosphate position of phosphoinositides and is highly expressed in developing and adult brain, eye and muscle. Methods: We performed a case report of three Brazilian patients with INPP5KCMD with cataracts and intellectual disability under clinical follow-up at our service. Results: Case 1: 39 years old, female, presenting with progressive leg weakness since childhood, mild intellectual disability and bilateral cataracts at 20 years. Her 35-yearold sister (Case 2) had a similar clinical picture with limb-girdle weakness since childhood, cognitive impairment and early- onset bilateral cataracts. Both with myopathic pattern in EMG, elevated creatine phosphokinase (CK) and dystrophic pattern in muscle biopsy. Brain MRI studies disclosed a large megacistern in the elderly and no abnormalities in the younger sister. Genetic testing: c.653_655del(p.(Ser218del) in homozygosity in INPP5K gene. Case 3: 20 years old, female, normal motor development but learning difficulties since childhood. Presented with progressive pelvic girdle weakness in childhood and bilateral cataracts in late adolescence. Exams disclosed elevated CK, brain MRI was normal and genetic testing with the following mutation in INPP5K gene:c.[881_883del];[1088T>C];p.[Ser294del];[Ile363Thr]. Conclusion: We describe patients with CMD, cataracts and intellectual disability, caused by mutation in the INPP5K gene. In literature few cases are reported.
