Abstract Brass films were formed on steel rods by magnetron sputtering by using 63 wt% Cu - 37 wt% Zn target in Ar plasma. The brass plated steel rods were inserted in crude rubber and then cured to form various samples. Rubber-brass inter-reacted layers were investigated by cross sectional TEM observation. Evaluation of adhesion force was also conducted in order to compare with the TEM investigation. The magnetron sputtering brass film has strongly oriented columner crystal structure and thickness of the film is uniform in whole area. The magnetron sputtering film has excellent adhesion regardless of the film thickness that cannot be attained by that of commercially manufactured steel cord.

The current paper is related to the study of the microstructure and texture of two machinable lead-free brass alloys, namely CuZn42 (CW510L) and CuZn38As (CW511L), which were evaluated in the as-drawn and post heat treated condition. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) was employed for the examination of the brass rods’ crystallographic properties in order to correlate the effect of post processing heat treatment on the evolution of phase structure and texture towards the interpretation of dynamic (impact) fracture properties. It is shown that α- and β-phase volume fractions, mean grain size, and grain boundary misorientation are the most influential factors altering the fracture resistance of single- and dual-phase brass alloy rods. The role of grain boundary engineering, through the formation of coincidence site lattice (CSL) boundaries and their evolution during thermomechanical processing, is of major importance for the design of the mechanical behaviour of new eco-friendly machinable brass alloys.

Brass alloys that meet ASTM C36000 standard were prepared from scrap copper alloys in this study. The mechanical properties of these brass alloy products were measured, and the results showed that yield strength, elongation, tensile strength, and hardness were respectively 164 N/mm2, 37.7%, 383 N/mm2, and 87.7 HV. The flow of elements in the brass alloy production process was also investigated using thermodynamic calculations and microstructural observations. It was discovered that elements such as Al, Mg, Pb, and Cd were easily oxidized as slag; Cd was easily volatilized at high temperatures, and impurities such as Fe, S, and P were precipitated as ZnS and Fe3P inclusions.

We studied the effects of the processing variables on the texture development of Ni tapes prepared from Ni powder compact rods. The Ni power was compacted into rods by cold isostatic pressing(CIP). The CIP-processed Ni rods were sintered for densification and made into Ni tapes of 100 microns by cold rolling. For the development of a cube texture, the rolled Ni tapes were annealed at various temperatures. The brass texture was converted into a cube texture during annealing and the degree of the formed cube textured was dependent on the annealing temperature. We analyzed the (200) cube texture by X-ray diffraction and pole figure analysis and EBSD(Electron beam backscattered diffraction pattern).

The location at which brace rods should be installed to reduce the risk of breakage in codominant stems traditionally has been below the crotch. In this study, codominant stems were pulled apart with measured force to determine if crotch strength was increased by installing a rod above the crotch rather than in the traditional rod location below the junction. With both red oak (Quercus rubra) and red maple (Acer rubrum), the strength of the codominant stem was increased significantly by installing the rod above the crotch a distance equal to the diameter of one of the stems. Brass rods tended to fail more than steel rods in oak but may be useful in small, weakerwooded trees.

Le mémoire porte sur l'étude de la fiabilité des assemblages utilisant des alliages de brasure sans-plomb en environnement sévère pour des applications électroniques. Une méthode de préparation métallographique fiable et reproductible en vue de l'analyse microstructurale est présentée. L'effet du vieillissement thermique statique sur l'évolution microstructurale de billes de brasure en SAC, la tenue à la fatigue mécanique des assemblages brasés et l'étude de l'endommagement thermomécanique sont développés. Le seul effet notable constaté après vieillissement thermique est l'augmentation des épaisseurs des intermétalliques de contact. A la suite de sollicitations mécaniques, les ruptures sont plus souvent observées dans les pistes que dans les brasures, et ne permettent pas d'incriminer des éléments de la microstructure brasée comme facteurs déterminant de propagation des fissures. Les sollicitations thermomécaniques conduisent à une recristallisation, et les fissures se propagent alors le long des joints de grains recristallisés.

In this thesis we study a novel soft-matter system that imitates motility. Our system consists of a few asymmetrically tapered brass rods and aluminium beads which are confined between two vertically shaking plates. The rods are motile due to interplay of their the fore-aft asymmetric shape, vibrational energy input, and the mechanics of contact with the bounding surfaces. Experiments done by our col- laborators revealed that the system undergoes a phase transition from a disordered state to an ordered coherently moving flock above a critical bead concentration. We have used time-driven numerical simulations and analytical theory to understand the physics underlying the phenomenon.

Martin Burgess reflects on his experiences in making Clocks A and B and outlines some vital guidelines to anyone considering making a regulator clock that follows Harrison’s principals. For example, the pendulums on Clocks A and B are both made from Invar, an alloy developed in the early twentieth century that has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion. In keeping with standard practice, the pendulums are compensated for temperature change by inclusion of a small brass block that supports the pendulum bob. Any downward expansion of the rod is counteracted by an upward expansion of the brass—the dimensions of the brass block is easily calculable. Burgess later understood that the modern form of pendulum, though easier to construct, lacked the frictional properties of the gridiron, which come to play in compensating for changes in barometric pressure.

This chapter describes the functional and anatomical characteristics of interoceptive processing at the levels of the primary sensory fiber and the spinal cord. The association of the spinothalamic pathway with pain and temperature had already been described in textbooks for years. The clinical evidence indicated that a knife cut that severed the spinal cord on one side produced a loss of pain and temperature sensations only on the opposite (contralateral) side of the body, as tested with pinprick and a cold brass rod, combined with the loss of discriminative touch sensation and skeletal motor function on the same (ipsilateral) side as the injury to the spinal cord. The anatomical basis for this dissociated pattern of sensory loss is the distinctness of the two ascending somatosensory pathways to the brain-discriminative touch sensation in the uncrossed (ipsilateral) dorsal column pathway, and pain and temperature sensations in the crossed (contralateral) spinothalamic pathway.

I gave it a last tap, tried all the screws again, put one more drop of oil on the quartz rod, and sat myself in the saddle. I suppose a suicide who holds a pistol to his skull feels much the same wonder at what will come next as I felt then. I took the starting lever in one hand and the stopping one in the other, pressed the first, and almost immediately the second. I seemed to reel; I felt a nightmare sensation of falling; and, looking round, I saw the laboratory exactly as before. Had anything happened? For a moment I suspected that my intellect had tricked me. Then I noted the clock. A moment before, as it seemed, it had stood at a minute or so past ten; now it was nearly half-past three!

Abstract Solid resin rods including ceramics nanoparticles were fed successfully into a Rokide flame gun to create dense coated layers without micro cracks and pores applying for electric, magnetic and dielectric components. In this investigation, alumina particles of 170 nm in average diameter were dispersed into acrylic liquid resin at 40 % in volume fraction. The paste materials was injected into an brass mold of φ4 ~ 200 mm in inner dimension and thermally cured through heating at 120 °C for 60 min. Formed solid rods were fed coaxially into an oxyacetylene gas flame by using the Rokide spraying system. Sprayed particles were collected in a water bath for microstructure observations by a scanning electron microscope and crystal phase analyses by an X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. Fine ceramics layer formations will be discussed systematically by the feeding speed of solid rods and gas flame condition of air pressure and oxygen pressure.

Film boiling is usually induced while a very hot object contacts with a coolant. Such phenomena will deteriorate the heat transfer and degrade the cooling process. Film boiling is of significant concern for the design of an emergency core cooling system after a hypothetical loss of coolant accident happens in a nuclear power plant. Furthermore, after a nuclear power plant is shut down, the fuel rods will continue to release heat due to the decay of fission products. Moreover, the subcooling of coolant might be changed dramatically during the reflood process. Therefore, it is of significant importance and interest to understand the effect of decay heat and subcooling of coolant on the quenching process of a hot object. This study demonstrates the quenching of a vertical brass cylinder without and with heating power of 105W in deionized water with different subcoolings. The diameter and length of the cylinder is 24 mm and 112 mm, respectively. Six K-Type thermocouples are embedded 2mm below the cylinder surface at different axial locations. The experimental results reveal that, with heating power of 105W, the duration of film boiling becomes much larger than the case without heating power under the same subcooling condition. Besides, the duration of film boiling decreases with increasing subcooling. This study also reveals that the Leidenfrost temperature increases significantly with increasing the subcooling with or without heating power. Significantly, a stable film boiling with approximately constant wall temperature can be sustained in saturated water. This is of significant concern for nuclear safety.

Impedance probes are used by the oil and gas industry to investigate multiphase flow behavior. In this study, an impedance needle probe has been developed to measure the local and temporal gas volume fraction in conductive and non-conductive process fluid. Measuring both resistance and capacitance enables this probe to be functional in both types of fluids and facilitates the measurement of local bubble velocity. Two 1/32″ insulated brass (alloy 260) rods with bare tips protrude into the flow. The gap between the electrodes is designed to be 0.085″. The probe can measure directional bubble velocity by measuring duration of signal gradient from liquid to gas transition. For a known distance between electrodes and by the measured time, directional bubble velocity in the direction of the connecting line between electrodes can be measured. The ratio between the time interval when signal is non-zero to the total time represents the temporal gas volume fraction.

Abrasive flow machining (AFM) process is a fine finishing process employing abrasive laden self modulating putty for the finishing of mainly internal recesses. Though the AFM is suitable for the finishing of internal cavities, but the material removal is very low during this finishing process. Helical abrasive flow machining (HLX-AFM) has been recently developed to improve the machining efficiency of AFM process. This process employs a coaxially fixed helical twist drill-bit during the extrusion of the abrasive laden media through an internal cylindrical recess. The presence of a fixed drill-bit inside a cylindrical cavity of the work-piece results in considerable increase in material removal and improvement in surface finish. In the present investigation, the same HLX-AFM setup has been used and the effects of two more helical profile rods viz. a 3-start helical profile and a spline have been studied along with the helical twist drill-bit for improving the quality characteristics of material removal and percentage improvement in the surface roughness during the fine finishing of internal cylindrical surface of brass work-pieces. The experiments were planned according to L9 orthogonal array of Taguchi method and the optimal process parameters were selected. The employment of a rod with six splines and a 3-start helical profile results in improved finishing in comparison to the drill-bit profile, due to the presence of more number of flutes and grooves on the coaxially held stationary rods. The helical profile type has 3.75% contribution towards the percentage improvement in the surface roughness, but is not significant in affecting material removal. The presence of 3-start helical profile led to 61.40% improvement in surface roughness (from Ra - 1.3 μm to 0.5 μm) at optimal level with no effect on material removal, which means no extra machining is taking place. The parameter of abrasive-to-media concentration ratio (varying from 0.75 to 1.25) is the most contributing factor with 85.90% contribution toward suface finish improvement and 71.71% contribution towards material removal. The finishing performance of 3-start profile is 15% better than the standard helical drill-bit with no increase in the operating pressures. SEM micrographs corroborated the fact that 3-start profile led to more number of light abrasive cutting grooves and thus more surface finish. HLX-AFM with 3-start helical profile rods can be employed for the finishing, form corrections of internal cylindrical cavities of any size. Presence of the profile rod results in increase in the reduction ratio and thus more machining action. The developed process can also generate cross-hatch lay pattern on internal cylindrical surfaces.

In this paper we present theoretical calculations and experimental results concerning acoustic wave propagation in a 2-D periodic composite. It is known that the microstructure below the length scale of the wavelength affects the macroscale wave and makes the composite dispersive [1,2]. This dispersion manifests as frequency dependent phase and group velocities. We present a mixed variational formulation originally proposed by Nemat-Nasser for the evaluation of the dispersive characteristics of periodic composites. We employ the formulation to calculate the dispersion relation for a two-dimensional composite consisting of brass rods embedded in epoxy. The method allows for the calculation of the band structure of the composite and the identification of the relevant modes through mode shape information. We finally present experimental results on a fabricated sample for the 2-D composite. The experiments include longitudinal and shear wave propagation through the sample. The transmitted energy of the longitudinal and shear waves are used to evaluate the location of the pass-bands and stop-bands and to compare the results with the numerical predictions.

Abstract An intensive research program has been initiated to provide a better understanding of the fundamental aspects of FEI in tube bundles. This paper reports the findings of an experimental investigation utilizing a newly commissioned experimental rig. Initially, a series of water-flow experiments were conducted in a fully flexible, low mass damping parameter, parallel triangular tube array (with a cluster of 9 brass rods). To investigate the effect of pitch ratio on the onset of FEI, four different pitch-to-diameter ratios of 1.27, 1.37, 1.48, and 1.62 were utilized and presented in this study. Moreover, to illustrate the dynamic effect of flat bar support conditions on the stability threshold of FEI, a series of experiments were conducted in each pitch ratio with varied tube/support clearances. A full description of the flow loop, including the utilized instrumentation, and troubleshooting challenges encountered in commissioning the test rig is discussed. Moreover, the obtained results of the single-phase flow experiments are presented. The current results show good agreement with the available data from previous investigations, which established the confidence level needed to start two-phase experiments.

A Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) coating is well known to offer superior wear and friction behaviour. This combination of properties makes DLC suitable for many different areas of tribology. This paper concerns itself with usage in the power cylinder environment of automotive diesel engines. To estimate the potential of DLC coatings applied to piston pins in internal combustion engines, linearly reciprocating sliding wear examinations have been performed on uncoated and DLC coated component segments versus different counterpart materials as present in the power cylinder environment, including: piston (aluminium alloy), bushing (brass), piston pin (steel) and connecting rod (steel). Evaluation criteria for the tests include friction and wear performance in dry and lubricated conditions. Test results show how the DLC coatings offer impressive wear reductions for each of the different counterpart materials used. Furthermore, special emphasis is given to the analysis of the friction behaviour. As expected, the coefficient of friction (COF) decreased for aluminium and steel counterparts when the piston pin segments were DLC coated. However, for the combination of DLC with brass the COF increased in the dry condition. This surprising outcome is explained with SEM and EDX investigations of the wear traces. The tests at elevated temperature with lubrication show an inverse relationship with respect to friction criteria when compared with the dry room temperature tests for the DLC with brass combination. Examined engine tests confirm the results of the non-engine wear test rig, showing that DLC coatings applied on piston pins also exhibit properties and good potential to decrease frictional losses and fuel consumption in modern engines.
