Purpose –The purpose of this study was to identify the reasons for due date book returns, borrowers' attitude when exposed to fines, library efforts to minimize fines and evaluate the effectiveness of fines in the library. Design/methodology/approach – This study used descriptive quantitative and qualitative approach. It was conducted at the Library of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada. Samples were purposively selected, involving undergraduate and postgraduate students batch 2011, 2012 and 2013 that never got fines and were still active. Findings – Borrowers had some reasons for overdue book returns, such as they forgot renewing the book, the book was booked by another user, they forgot the due date, they had no class to attend, had not finished reading, borrowed in short period of time, as well as other reasons, such as illness, a friend borrowed the book. So the term of the loan for 5 days was considered insufficient for them to read the books. Borrowers had to pay fines directly. If they were not yet able to pay the fines then they would not borrow books. Borrowers knew that overdue books would put other users at a disadvantage. Most of borrowers considered the fine to pay as much as Rp5,000.00 /day/book was high. But a few regarded it low. Borrowers considered that blocking the system was not effective for those who were late paying fines. The most effective effort that could be done in order that the borrower returned the books on time was providing online renewal system.

Abstract Leibniz argues that there must be a fundamental level of simple substances because composites borrow their reality from their constituents and not all reality can be borrowed. I contend that the underlying logic of this ‘borrowed reality argument’ has been misunderstood, particularly the rationale for the key premise that not all reality can be borrowed. Contrary to what has been suggested, the rationale turns neither on the alleged viciousness of an unending regress of reality borrowers nor on the Principle of Sufficient Reason, but on the idea that composites are phenomena and thus can be real only insofar as they have a foundation in substances, from which they directly ‘borrow’ their reality. The claim that composites are phenomena rests in turn on Leibniz's conceptualism about relations. So understood, what initially looked like a disappointingly simple argument for simples turns out to be a rather rich and sophisticated one.

Introduction. To study the peasantry of the 16th – the early 17th century in Russia we need information from all the territories of the state. There are unique documents in the archives of the Joseph-Volokolamsk monastery for the central part of the Russian state, which allow us to investigate the issue of monastic enslavement. This issue has not been studied enough regarding the early 17th century. Methods and materials. Such a source as a borrowed monastic bondage is poorly studied in historiography. In this regard the aim of the article is to study the position of monastery borrowers according to the form of debt records of the early 17th century. There are objectives: to identify the elements of the form of bondage records that reflect the position of the borrowers; to consider changes in the position of borrowers based on the debt book form evolution. The article uses the methods of formal and comparative analysis with respect to records in debt books of 7115 (1606/07), 7116 (1607/08), the bondage book of 1609, and borrowed bondages of 1609. Analysis. The records of money issuance debt books of 1606/07 and 1607/08 were compared with the information from the debt book of 1532-1534. The author traced the evolution of debt charging book design elements based on the sources of 1606/07 and 1607/08. The paper analyzes borrowed bondages of besieged people on borrowed monastery bread in 1609, along with the bondage book of 1609. These results were compared with the bread bondages of the Spaso-Prilutsky monastery. Results. The form of debt records has been well developed by the early 17th century. According to money issuance and charge records, a borrower was protected from lender’s abuses. However, bread bondages most objectively reflect the position of a debtor, who was in danger of enslavement because of vague wording in bondages.

The current research introduces the concept of psychological ownership of borrowed money, a construct that represents how much consumers feel that borrowed money is their own. The authors observe both individual-level and contextual-level variation in the degree to which consumers feel psychological ownership of borrowed money, and variation on this dimension predicts willingness to borrow money for discretionary purchases. At an individual level, psychological ownership of borrowed money is distinct from other individual factors such as debt aversion, financial literacy, income, intertemporal discounting, materialism, propensity to plan, self-control, spare money, and tightwad–spendthrift tendencies, and it predicts willingness to borrow above and beyond these factors. At a contextual level, the authors document systematic differences in psychological ownership between different debt types. They show that these differences in psychological ownership manifest in consumers’ online search behavior and explain consumers’ differential interest in borrowing across debt types. Finally, the authors demonstrate that psychological ownership of borrowed money is malleable, such that framing debt using language lower in psychological ownership can reduce consumers’ propensity to borrow.

The rooms at the Nurul Jadid University lecturers' guest house still could be borrowed only by asking for information to the room desk. It makes the borrower wasting a lot of time, especially if the room desk is not available, in which the borrower needs to wait for getting the certainty of approval for the room borrowing schedule, and dealing with the frequent crashes because there is no system with effective borrowing management. Therefore, this program is to make an Android-based Space Borrowing Management Application by which the user can make use of its features to manage the room and make it easier to borrow the room.

The following commentary introduces six pieces written between 2012 and 2015, during the period of my PhD research at the University of Southampton, UK. All of the pieces discussed here are, on some level, concerned with the subject of borrowing, be it the use of pre-existing musical material, or elements of different traditions, compositional practices in a broad historical context. Different approaches are represented in the ways the individual pieces refer to existing music, ranging from literal quotations to stylistic allusions. The commentary presents the ways these references are transformed, manipulated, and re-contextualised in the pieces discussed. I also attempt to contextualise my music through considering related works by other composers, as well as related debates within postmodern theory. Today - partly as a result of globalisation - the concept of tradition takes on a new aspect: it is less significantly defined by national affiliations, or commitments to particular trends and movements that stem from regional cultures/aesthetics. It is no longer something given, inherited; a multitude of traditions are available to choose from and explore through the arts. In this spirit, the presented works refer to a wide variety of musical traditions, from folk music, through Renaissance polyphony, the German Lied to post-war compositional styles and practices. The commentary includes a general introduction to the compositional techniques lying behind the works presented as well as six analyses supplementing the pieces included in my composition portfolio.

In this thesis, some old decision strategies are investigated and a new one that furthers our understanding of how decisions are made is introduced. Three studies are presented. In Study I and II, strategies are investigated in terms of inferences and in Study III, strategies are investigated in terms of preferences. Inferences refer to decisions regarding facts, e.g., whether a patient has a heart disease or not. Preferences refer to decision makers’ personal preferences between different choice alternatives, e.g., which flat out of many to choose. In all three studies, both non-compensatory strategies and compensatory strategies were investigated. In compensatory strategies, a high value in one attribute cannot compensate for a low value in another, while in non-compensatory strategies such compensation is possible. Results from Study I showed that both compensatory (logistic regression) and non-compensatory (fast and frugal) strategies make inferences equally well, but logistic regression strategies are more frugal (i.e., use fewer cues) than the fast and frugal strategies. Study II showed that the results were independent of the degree of expertise. The good inferential ability of both non-compensatory and compensatory strategies suggests there might be room for a strategy that can combine the strengths of the two. Study III introduces such a strategy, the Concordant-ranks (CR) strategy. Results from Study III showed that choices and attractiveness evaluations followed this new strategy. This strategy dictates a choice of an alternative with concordant ranks between attribute values and attribute weights when alternatives are about equally attractive. CR also serves as a proxy for finding the alternative with the shortest distance to an ideal. The CR strategy combines the computational simplicity of non-compensatory strategies with the superior information integration ability of compensatory strategies.

The prolific professional practice of copying from pictures in seventeenth-century England has come to define the artistic climate of the period. The dominance and advancement of foreign-born painters in working in London: Sir Anthony Van Dyck, Sir Peter Lely, and Sir Godfrey Kneller; the comprehensive influence of the portrait- types they developed for the English market, and the campaign since the last decades of the seventeenth century for an 'English School of Painting', focussed on the promotion of history or subject painting, have contributed to a characterisation of the period as a time when native artists, detached from the artistic innovations of mainland Europe, slavishly adhered to the patterns set by leading foreigners. Because copies are now seen as secondary to originals in fine art, as in other categories, copied pictures have been considered an inferior class of object, not worthy of critical attention. As a result of the confluence of all these factors, the period has been marginalised as derivative and inconsequential in art-historical terms. This thesis argues that modem attitudes are at variance with the reception of copies and the professional practice of copying in seventeenth-century England, therefore the artistic production of the period is currently fundamentally misunderstood. It investigates the status of copies and originals over the course of the century, linking shifts in their intellectual and economic values to the origins of the secondary market for art at the outset of the century, the sale of the Royal Collection during the Interregnum, and market saturation in the 1690s. The roles and functions of copies in collections are demonstrated from material in inventories, diaries and letters. Techniques and tools for copying are reconstructed and re-enacted, and compared to a little-known class of intermediary drawings. This study pinpoints the first enunciation of the concept of artistic originality in the nexus of the major secondary art markets of London and the Low Countries during the 1690s. Noting that artists of all nationalities and classes in England engaged in copying, the study aligns contemporary commentary about the studio production of replicas and copies, artists' creative use of copying and copies, and re-evaluates artistic intent in seventeenth- century England.

This thesis consists of a portfolio of nine musical compositions with accompanying recordings and commentary. The works included range from solo chamber music to large ensemble and explore the notions of mimesis, memory, and borrowed materials in musical composition. The commentary begins by providing a framework and historical context to the portfolio and in particular explores mimesis as an æsthetic device across the centuries and art forms. Music for amateurs and multiple tempi are then presented as two sub facets within the main research before a detailed exploration of the various source materials ensues. The commentary examines different approaches taken to an eclectic mix of source materials including popular music, hymns and plainchant, and music from the classical canon. Questions raised by writing music with multiple tempi or for amateurs are addressed before a general conclusion examining approaches to melody, harmony, rhythm, and form, across the portfolio.

This thesis unpacks the complex and interconnected relationships between credit and debt, specific techniques of government, and social class processes over time. The thesis is underpinned by a social ecological model: it operates horizontally across the credit and debt realms and vertically on three levels – the meta, the macro and the micro. Methodologically, the data are generated from archival databases, experiences drawn from working within a debt charity, and in-depth interviews with 21 individuals using the services of StepChange Debt Charity to help with their financial difficulties. The thesis starts by exploring how a cadre of free-marketers proposed a series of economic and social policies from the 1950s which aimed to configure a new form of governmentality. Drawing upon documents drawn from various archives, the thesis reveals how their ideas – the market, the consumer, and the pursuit of private property – all rely on unhindered credit to operate. The thesis subsequently examines identity formation within a social domain dominated by these ideas and awash with credit. Building a theoretical framework based on Pierre Bourdieu’s relational understandings of class and Anthony Giddens’ notion of ontological security, the thesis then draws on interview data to outline how the participants use credit to build identities in response to amplifying inequality. A consequence of this process for the participants is the accumulation of a large credit balance, and their fall-into-debt. Here the thesis changes track, beginning to explore the dominant forms of governmentality that structure the debt realm. Initially tracing how debt collection practices threaten the participants’ capital stocks, the thesis moves onto expose how the shame and fear these practices induce are not unintended but instead serve to transform identities. The thesis shows how neoliberals classify and stigmatise those who fall-into-debt as irresponsible and immoral debtors, and disseminate a discourse of individual financial responsibility, with the intention of normalising total debt repayment. The thesis draws upon the interview data to reveal how the participants come to internalise these discourses and reconstruct their lives to make sure they submit to it. This thesis argues the realms of credit and debt, the forms of governmentality engendered to support them, and the ‘classificatory struggles’ they induce, are arranged to provide enduring, maximised and protected profit streams to those who produce and distribute credit.

In August 2021, the IMF made a new SDR allocation to help ease pandemic-induced financial strains in the Global South. This paper assesses the potential of the SDR system to address debtrelated problems in global finance. We analyze the SDR system as a web of interlocking balance sheets whose members can use SDR holdings—the system’s tradable assets—for conversion into usable currency as a perpetual low-interest loan or to make payments to each other. Using original IMF data, we study how the system has been practically used since 1990. Though widely perceived as a solution in search of a problem in the post-Bretton Woods era, we find that the SDR system provides three mechanisms through which IMF members borrow and lend usable currency to each other, with different strings attached: first, transactions by agreement; second, the IMF’s core lending facilities for which the SDR system offers additional resources; and third, IMF-sponsored Trusts which seek to harness the SDR system for development purposes and are the basis for the current idea of ‘voluntary channeling’. Overall, given the SDR system’s idiosyncratic accounting rules, the new allocation can improve the liquidity position of a country and offer some limited avenues for sovereign debt restructuring but comes with new interest and exchange rate risks. Voluntary channeling cannot happen without a wealth transfer, neither the SDR allocation nor the use of Trusts can overcome this problem. Still, Trusts can be a useful instrument to help with debt forgiveness and to ensure that borrowed funds are used for their intended purpose.

This paper studies the impacts of state appropriations on staffing and salaries at public higher education institutions in the United States using employment and revenue data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, along with an instrumental variables strategy borrowed from Deming and Walters (2018) and Chakrabarti, Gorton, and Lovenheim (2020). The instrument sidesteps the potential endogeneity of state appropriations for a given institution in a given year by interacting an institution’s historical reliance on state appropriations with total state appropriations for all higher education institutions in a given year. The results suggest that higher state appropriations are associated with an increase in tenure-track assistant professors at four-year institutions. They are also associated with an increase in part-time instructional staff at both four-year and two-year institutions. However, they are not associated with a change in the number of tenured faculty. Appropriations are also positively related to salaries for a variety of employee groups, although notably not for instructional staff who are instructors, lecturers, or without an academic rank. Overall, the results show that public higher education institutions use state appropriations in a variety of ways, but I do not find evidence that they replace contingent faculty with tenured or tenure-track faculty when appropriations rise.

Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) are organizations that provide small loans to borrowers who typically lack collateral, steady employment, or a verifiable credit history and therefore do not have access to traditional commercial banking. Blockchain technology could be used to create a more holistic view of the financial position of a potential borrower, which could result in better lending decisions. This study explores how blockchain technology has the potential to assist Microfinance Institutions in the water and sanitation sector through a pilot project developed in Peru. The improvements seen in the existing microfinance ecosystem during the implementation of the blockchain platform can be sorted into two main groups: improved institutional performance, and data ownership for the individuals.

The purpose of the work is the development and application of models for scoring assessment of microfinance institution borrowers. This model allows to increase the efficiency of work in the field of credit. The object of research is lending. The subject of the study is a direct scoring model for improving the quality of lending using machine learning methods. The objective of the study: to determine the criteria for choosing a solvent borrower, to develop a model for an early assessment, to create software based on neural networks to determine the probability of a loan default risk. Used research methods such as analysis of the literature on banking scoring; artificial intelligence methods for scoring; modeling of scoring estimation algorithm using neural networks, empirical method for determining the optimal parameters of the training model; method of object-oriented design and programming. The result of the work is a neural network scoring model with high accuracy of calculations, an implemented system of automatic customer lending.
