Designers are using experimental approaches to book covers which is one of the many graphic design areas where we encounter with fonts and they are trying to keep their designs alive and different via innovative solutions. Typographic approaches are changing with today’s technological developments and experimental researches affects book covers too. Developments in software regarding design enable using many applications simultaneously. Experimental researches, discoveries and interpretation of typography and images in an unexpected way empower communication. Different is always appealing. Therefore designers choose to do attractive and marketable designs and lay the foundation of new on this path which started as experimental. Definition of typography, common application areas and book covers which is one of these areas will be examined within this study and analyzes about usage of experimental typography will be conducted. Experimental approach process, its result and affects will be investigated and findings about necessity of experimental typography will be tried to find.Keywords: experimental typography, digital age, book cover design.

Purpose The massive growth in the number of book titles has made publishers think about how to attract a customer’s attention to particular books. This is the reason why the book cover plays an important role as a tool of communication with the reader. The research question of this exploratory study is whether the preference given by readers to book cover colors is different across genders and age groups when they choose the book in an online bookstore by its cover. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach The experiment in a bookstore and a library was done. Each respondent was asked to choose one book from our sample of 18 books and a mobile eye tracking laboratory was set up in order to find out the respondents’ basic gazing data. After conducting an experiment with bookstore and library visitors, the results showed that younger women tend to select a book by its cover (when the time for selection is not limited) statistically significantly faster than men of the same age group. The difference disappears with age. Findings The data of the experiment suggested that women from the age group 18-35 prefer books with cool color covers and the preference disappears with age; accordingly, men in the age group 56+ prefer books with warm color covers. The preference was not seen in younger age groups. The analysis of data on the number of choices for each cover and the time spent looking at each of them revealed a significant positive correlation between the women’s preferences in selecting covers and the time women spend looking at them; however, there was no such correlation in the case of men’s data. Originality/value The study has shown that the reader’s book choice is at least partly influenced by the cover color. The preference given to cool and warm colors and the speed of decision making show certain differences across genders and age groups. The result contributes to knowing how to create book covers more adopted to reader’s needs.

During the American hardcover revolution, in the 1980s and 1990s, Alfred A. Knopf established itself as the leading publishing house in book design. Founded in New York in 1915, Knopf has been the recipient of many literary prizes and in 1999 was awarded the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) Corporate Leadership Award, a prize that recognizes forward-thinking organizations that have been instrumental in the advancement of design by applying the highest standards. Knopf made a name for itself using quality in design along with quality in writing as a strategy for its long-lasting success. One of the main people responsible for this success has been the graphic designer Chip Kidd, one of the most renowed American book cover designers alive. Kidd started working at Knopf in 1986 and soon became the go-to designer for well-known writers such as Michael Crichton, Haruki Murakami, and James Ellroy. His work shows an intuitive understanding of the narrative and a unique and deep connection between text and paratext. Kidd stretches the visual boundaries between words and visuals, asking readers to bridge the gap between what they read and what they see. His covers leave the image open to interpretation; this deliberate lack of definition engages contemporary readers more than traditional covers do. This article illustrates, through the analysis of a selection of the most significant covers designed by Kidd, how his work at Knopf helped create a revolution and shape a new visual language in American book design.

The purpose of this study was to examine how and how often athletic girls were represented on the cover art of young adult (YA) sport fiction. In this research, 154 YA sport fiction books were analyzed using quantitative content analysis. Using existing sport research and theory focused on women’s representation in sport media, the researchers developed a coding scheme to assess cover art for each of the following categories: (a) presence and racial representation of female character/s on cover; (b) portrayal of female body on cover (whole body, partial body/with head, or partial body/without head); (c) portrayal of female character as active or passive; (d) portrayal of female character in or out of athletic uniform; (e) portrayal of female character in or out of the sport setting; (f) presence of sport equipment; and (g) type of cover. Findings revealed that 81% of the book covers had a female character in which 29% of the covers displayed the whole body, 47% displayed partial body/with head, and 23% displayed partial body/with no head of the female character. Only 0.06% of the book covers had a female character of color. Approximately 31% of the female characters were displayed in active positioning, 58% in athletic attire, and 44% in the sport setting. Of the books reviewed, 55% displayed equipment on the cover. The findings indicate that athletic girls have few images on YA sport fiction cover art that accurately represent their athleticism, and there is a clear absence of diverse representation. It is critical that those responsible for the design and layout of book covers clearly represent active females in action, in uniform, and in the sport context.

Research Summary Reduction and condensation represented an important technical diversity in the design processes, which are usually described as complex and overlapping, through which designers try to reach the functional and aesthetic goals of the publication. Book covers are considered a fertile field to show the possibilities that can be highlighted in the field of design, which the current research tried to penetrate its paths on. According to several axes. The first chapter was organized according to themes, the research problem was formulated according to the question: 1- What are the functional and aesthetic outcomes of reduction and condensation in printed cover designs? The importance was determined according to two dimensions: cognitive and applied. And it can provide insights into the mechanisms of reduction and condensation in print design, which will provide the design (environment) with what enhances its development. As for the second, it can enhance the applied aspects in its functional and aesthetic dimensions, which means an expansion of the ability to work within the environment of designing publications and the cover as a model for it. The research objectives also included: 1- Reveal the reality of the use of formal reduction and condensation in the designs of printed covers. The research moved in the following limits of knowledge: A- The objective limit / the use of shorthand and formal condensation in the designs of printed book covers. B - The spatial limit / covers of Iraqi books issued by the House of Cultural Affairs (Baghdad). C - The time limit / 2002 until 2004 AD. Defining terms related to the research procedures were defined, and the second chapter included the axes of the functional dimension, the aesthetic dimension, content and expression through reduction and condensation, then the indicators of the theoretical framework. The sample and the research tool also analyzed samples, which amounted to (3) samples that were analyzed according to a form prepared for this purpose, and reviewed the results, conclusions, recommendations and suggestions, and the results came in: 1. Excessive use of tonal reduction processes for the image used, as in model (2). Where it varies by one color value. This use is for purposes including diversity in the design process or to draw attention to what this kind of move away from the repetition that we find in the uses of images employed in the designs of the covers. 2. General weakness in the designs as in model (1) in terms of balancing events between: shape and space (total area) written patterns and the basic elements forming the design and the color relations adopted in the designs.

Abstract This paper shows how book design responds to the Nobel’s prestige. Using previously unpublished materials from German publishing archives, I explore how the Nobel Prize is accompanied by the requirement to design iconic books. This unique material documents how different players in the publishing industry exchange ideas about ‘Nobel Prize-appropriate’ book design. This applies, for example, to the illustrations for an essay by Octavio Paz, designed covers for Nadine Gordimer, and the pictorial representation of Günter Grass’s and Tomas Tranströmer’s ‘life and work’.

Abstract Older adults are underrepresented and rarely appear in major roles in children’s literature. According to developmental intergroup theory, numerically smaller groups are likely to become targets of stereotypes and prejudice. Because parental ageist attitudes are related to those of their children, and parents typically choose their children’s literature, we investigated parental preferences for books featuring older and younger adults and what factors might predict this preference. In an online survey, 176 parents of children aged 12 or younger rated children’s book covers featuring a child and a prominent younger or older adult. There were two identical versions of each book cover on which only the age of the adult varied. Each respondent viewed covers featuring older and younger adults, but only saw one version of each cover (i.e., counterbalanced design). Parents indicated their preference for the books by stating how much they and their children would like the book and how likely they would be to buy it. Stereotypical expectations regarding the books’ storylines were rated on a semantic differential scale (e.g., modern vs. old-fashioned). Results revealed that there were no significant differences in preferences for books featuring younger, compared to older adults. However, a stronger difference in preference for books featuring younger, over older adults was predicted by the extent of stereotypical expectations regarding the storylines. In particular, this preference was stronger in parents who expected stories with older adults to conform to prevailing ageist stereotypes, suggesting that ageist expectations may deter some parents from books featuring older adults.

The graphic designs proposed by Polish publishers cannot be compared neither in number, nor in diversity to those presented by Margaret C. Sullivan in Jane Austen Cover to Cover: 200 Years of Classic Book Covers. Nevertheless, they are a valuable and still undiscussed source of knowledge on the Polish reception of Austen’s novels. Further information on this subject is provided in the first part of the paper by a compilation of book series in which some or all of the texts by Austen have appeared since the 1990s. The analysis of the book covers takes into consideration the relation between the design and the content of the narrative as well as the character of the artwork and its origin. The most popular were 19th century paintings (portraits, genre scenes, less frequently landscapes), film stills from the movie adaptations and floral patterns. As one of the aims of the study was to answer the question how the covers direct the reading process and place the text in the literary tradition, the remarks on the publishers’ choices were supplemented with the readers’ reviews. In the conclusion, it was suggested how the potential, new editions could be designed to stand out from the former ones.

In graphic design, colours can be used to communicate a message and attract attention. In book design, colours convey the content, just like they communicate the product’s information in packaging design. The purpose of this study is to analyse how colours have been used on book covers to convey the content, within the topic of health. A quantitative content analysis was made on the book covers of the top 11 bestsellers in Sweden. The colour theory analysis is based on Shigenobu Kobayashi’s work in Colour image scale. The result found that neutral hue was the one that was most commonly used. Additionally, the analysis revealed some correlation between the book content and the colour combination on the book covers. For example, a book related to finding happiness had a colour combination that matches a casual and natural lifestyle. Although the analysis offered some insight within the subject of colour and book design, further studies are needed in order to understand the extent of how colours are being used towards communicating the content.

Studiens syfte var att utforska hur bokomslag för självhjälpsböcker inom kategorin depression bör formges för att passa den specificerade målgruppens perspektiv och ämnets karaktär. Syftet besvarades med hjälp av fyra frågeställningar. Inledningsvis undersöktes teori och målgruppens preferenser i en förstudie. Därefter följde ett designarbete där författarna formgav fyra bokomslag utifrån förstudien: Bokomslag 1 (Bubblor) som fokuserar på ett abstrakt, personligt, modernt och dynamiskt uttryckssätt, Bokomslag 2 (Vattenfärg) vars gröna vattenfärgsmotiv går från mörkt till ljust för att symbolisera livets olika nyanser och skeden, Bokomslag 3 (Paper Art 1) vars motiv symboliserar att ta sig igenom det mörka för att komma fram till ljuset, samt Bokomslag 4 (Paper Art 2) som med sitt motiv väcker associationer till hav och fokuserar på att skapa en harmonisk och hoppfull känsla. Avslutningsvis utvärderades omslagen av målgruppen, där Bokomslag 2 och 4 fick bäst respons och ansågs mest lyckade. Den avslutande frågeställningen var övergripande och syftade till att hitta aspekter som kan vara viktiga att ta i beaktande vid formgivning av bokomslag inom kategorin. I studien kunde ett antal mönster utrönas i vad målgruppen värdesätter. Följande riktlinjer skapades därefter, som rekommendationer vid formgivningen: det är svårt men viktigt att skapa en balans mellan positivt och dystert i omslagets stämning; abstrakta motiv med en lämplig symbolisk koppling till ämnet är att föredra; det är positivt om bokomslaget sticker ut från mängden; målgruppen uppskattar omslag som känns estetiskt tilltalande, moderna och färgrika; linjära teckensnitt är att föredra då de upplevs moderna och tydliga; omslaget bör inte avslöja bokens innehåll och ämne för tydligt.

Although teenagers are taught to never judge a book by its cover, studies have shown that many teens do in fact make their reading decisions based on a book’s cover art (Jones, 2007; Yampbell, 2009). In this context, I considered it important to conduct a visual analysis of young adult book covers to determine trends in terms of imagery, colours and typography. To do so, I analyzed a selection of 50 books drawn from the list put out in 2014 by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) naming the Best Fiction for Young Adults, and I reached some interesting conclusions. In terms of imagery, the human body is the most predominant motif, in particular the fragmented body with the focus on the upper part of body, such as the face and the eyes. Including body pictures in a book cover is an effective marketing strategy since teenagers tend to create a personal relationship with protagonists. However, this practice can also objectify the human body and strengthen the idea that it can be manipulated (as it is, both by the designer and the reader). In terms of colours, it was hard to establish a trend since colour seems to be used at random in the book covers analyzed. However, it was possible to determine that black is by far the most used colour. Black can make a cover appear sleek and sophisticated and also makes the book appealing to both male and female readers because black is liked by both sexes. Lastly, in terms of typography, I determined that sans serif typefaces are the most used. Although decorative typefaces are the ones generally used in book covers, the cleanness, simplicity and apparent neutrality of a sans serif type proves to be the best choice for these covers as it creates a balance with the emotionalizing nature of its images and colours.
Desde crianças que ouvimos dizer que não devemos julgar um livro pela capa, mas a verdade é que muitos adolescentes fazem as suas escolhas de leitura com base nas capas dos livros (Jones, 2007; Yampbell, 2009). Neste contexto, considerei importante levar a cabo uma análise visual de capas de livros para adolescentes com o objetivo de encontrar tendências em termos de imagens, cores e tipografia. Para tal, analisei uma seleção de 50 livros da lista “Best Fiction For Young Adults” lançada em 2014 pela Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA). Em termos de imagens, conclui que o corpo humano é o símbolo mais prevalente, em particular o corpo fragmentado focado na parte superior do corpo, isto é, a cara e os olhos. A inclusão de imagens corporais na capa de um livro é uma estratégia de marketing bastante efetiva, uma vez que os adolescentes tendem a criar uma relação pessoal com os protagonistas. Contudo, esta prática pode também transformar o corpo humano num objeto e fortalecer a ideia de que este pode ser manipulado, tanto pelo designer como pelo leitor. Em termos de cores, foi difícil estabelecer uma tendência, já que nas capas analisadas, a cor parece ser utilizada de forma aleatória. No entanto, foi possível concluir que o preto é sem dúvida a cor mais utilizada. O preto torna a capa mais elegante e sofisticada e torna o livro apelativo tanto para homens como para mulheres, uma vez que o preto é uma cor apreciada por ambos os sexos. Por último, em termos de tipografia, conclui que as fontes sem serifa são as mais utilizadas. Embora as fontes decorativas sejam geralmente as mais usadas em capas de livros, a simplicidade e aparente neutralidade de um tipo de letra sem serifa torna-se na melhor escolha para estas capas, uma vez que cria um balanço com a natureza mais emocional das suas imagens e cores.

This thesis is a preliminary investigation into graphic design in 1920s and 1930s Shanghai. I will look at creations of designs on the covers of books and periodicals most closely linked to new literary groups, for that was where a distinctive new idiom of design emerged. I will concentrate on a few figures, including Lu Xun, Tao Yuanqing, Chen Zhifo, and Qian Juntao. Biographical information for each is given, followed by preliminary analysis on some cover designs. Topics covered include artistic characters, the principles of tu'an (a particular understanding of design), and influences from Japan and the West.

Resumo: As capas de livros analisadas nesta pesquisa foram criadas por Marius Lauritzen Bern para a editora Civilização Brasileira na década de 60 no Brasil. Marius Bern foi um designer brasileiro autodidata que iniciou sua carreira através das artes plásticas durante um período em que não havia a formalização do ensino de design no Brasil. Sua parceria com a editora Civilização Brasileira foi estabelecida através do editor Ênio Silveira no ano de 1965, após a saída do designer Eugênio Hirsch. No período de 1965 a 1970, Marius Bern permaneceu como principal designer da editora Civilização Brasileira. A Editora Civilização Brasileira pertencia ao editor Ênio Silveira, intelectual reconhecido no campo cultural brasileiro e importante na resistência contra a ditadura no Brasil. Ênio Silveira foi o grande incentivador das mudanças no design dos livros da editora. Em 1960 houve uma ruptura das convenções gráficas na cultura editorial e, portanto no mercado de livros no Brasil. Circunstâncias específicas relativas ao exercício da atividade no período em questão, como o modo de criação e o processo de produção disponível então, foram abordados de modo a auxiliarem no entendimento do discurso gráfico das capas. Através da análise foi possível identificar algumas soluções visuais recorrentes na produção de capas de Marius Bern, o que permite algumas conclusões sobre sua produção
Abstract: This research focuses on analyzing Marius Lauritzen Bern's book cover production for Civilização Brasileira, during the 1960s. Marius was a self-taught designer who began his career in visual arts, in a time when the teaching of Design had still not been formalized in Brazil. Marius Bern began his partnership with the publishing Civilização Brasileira in 1965, through its visionary publisher Ênio Silveira. He joined them right after designer Eugênio Hirsch had left the company, and from 1965 to 1970 he stood as its chief designer. Ênio - owner of Civilização Brasileira - was considered an important Brazilian intellectual in the national cultural field and also an important figure in the fight against the military dictatorship. He was also the staunchest supporter of the changes adopted by the company in its book designs. The 1960s mark a twist in the graphic conventions adopted by the publishing culture and, therefore, in the Brazilian book market. Specific circumstances related to the practice of the profession, such as the ways in which book covers were created and the production processes that were available at the time, were addressed to ensure a better understanding of the graphic speech of the covers. Through the analysis it was possible to identify some recurrent visual solutions in Marius' book designs, which allow us to draw some conclusions regarding his work

Böcker är, trots ett generellt minskat intresse, fortfarande en viktig del av vårtkulturella samhälle. Att böckers utseende anpassas efter sin målgrupp är ingetovanligt men frågan är om även könet på författaren spelar in gällandeutformningen av omslaget.Syftet med studien var därför att genom en visuell innehållsanalys av böckerspocketomslag kartlägga de skillnader som återfinns på manliga respektivekvinnliga författares omslag.Denna undersökning har baserats på en visuell innehållsanalys där 200pocketomslag analyserades, 100 från svenska författare och 100 från engelskaförfattare. Dessa var därefter jämlikt fördelade mellan könen. I analysenreflekteras det över pocketböckernas motiv, dominerande färg, typsnittsfamiljersamt typsnittsfärger.Resultatet från undersökningen tyder på att kvinnliga författare har ettfemininare utseende på sina böcker överlag, och att svenska kvinnligaförfattares omslag uppvisade flest tecken på en femininare utformning. Det gårdock inte att utesluta att böckernas genre kan ha ett inflytande gällandeböckernas utformning, då det var svårt att precisera genren på många böckeröverlag.
Books are, despite a decline in interest, still an important part of our culturalsociety. It is not unusual for a book’s cover to adapt to its target audience butthe question stands whether the gender of the author functions as a part of thedesign equation as well.The purpose of this study was to through a visual analysis of paperback bookcovers map out differences found between male and female writers’ bookcovers.This study is based on a visual content analysis were 200 paperback coverswere analysed, 100 from Swedish authors and 100 from English authors. Thesewere then evenly divided between the genders. The analysis reflects over themotifs on the covers as well as the dominant colour, font families and fontcolours.The results from the analysis indicate that female authors generally got a morefeminine appearance on their covers, and that covers by Swedish female authorsshowed most signs of a feminine design. Alas, it is impossible to rule out genreas an important influence regarding the books’ cover design. However, as it washard to pinpoint the genre of many of the books analysed it was difficult tomake a distinct connection between genres and books’ cover design.

Resumo: Eugênio Hirsch (Viena, 1923 - Rio de Janeiro, 2001) é mais conhecido por seu trabalho na editora Civilização Brasileira na primeira metade da década de 1960. Sua atuação na editora do Rio de Janeiro foi marcada pela versatilidade de recursos visuais e pela ampla liberdade concedida pelo editor Ênio Silveira. No mesmo período produziu capas para a editora Globo, de Porto Alegre, em quantidade muito inferior, mas com a mesma liberdade e qualidade. Após passagem pelos EUA, Hirsch foi contratado pela editora madrilenha Codex como diretor de arte da Coleção Museus do Mundo, e retornou ao Brasil no final dos anos 1960, passando a trabalhar para a Livraria José Olympio Editora. Esta dissertação tem como tema central a relação entre o lettering e as imagens no trabalho de Hirsch. Essa relação é estudada a partir da análise das capas de livros produzidas por Hirsch entre 1959 e 1976. Dentro dessa amostragem abrangente são identificadas as características mais marcantes e recorrentes do desenho de letras nas capas do designer austríaco. Também é apresentada uma pequena amostra da produção de alguns capistas que atuaram no Brasil nas décadas de 1930, 1940 e 1950, fornecendo uma visão mais acurada da importância do trabalho de Eugênio Hirsch.
Abstract: Eugênio Hirsch (Vienna, 1923 - Rio de Janeiro, 2001) is best known by his work for the publishing house Civilização Brasileira in the first half of the 1960s, wich was marked by a large range of visual resources used with great freedom granted to him by editor Ênio Silveira. In the same period he made book covers for Globo, a publishing house based on the city of Porto Alegre. Although less expressive in number, these covers kept the same quality and freedom. After a short period in the USA, Hirsch was hired by Madri based publishing house Codex as art director, being responsible for El Mundo de los Museus collection. When returning to Brazil in the end of the 1960s, he begun to work for Livraria José Olympio Editora, in Rio de Janeiro. This research is centered in the relation between letters and images in Hirsch's book covers. This relation is studied by analizing the book covers made by Hirsch between 1959 and 1976. In this wide sampling, the most relevant and recurring caractheristics related to lettering and type in Hirsch's work are identified. Also presented is a sample of the graphic work done by some cover artists that had worked in Brazil during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, allowing a more accurate perception of the importance of Eugênio Hirsch's work.

Today’s society is becoming more digitalised. Moving traditional printing to screen is becoming the new normal. Since the selection of ebooks is becoming larger and larger the publishers and authors must start thinking about their design to have better prerequisites than their competitors. The focus of this study will be an analysation of the best and worst covers of Amazon Kindle ebook cover design. Today, many self-published authors do not want to spend money on an ebook when they can design it by themselves for free and therefore they lose the impact that a good ebook cover have on the selling. The purpose of this study is to deduct which kind of design principles are more desirable, and how these design principles are presented. The study will contribute with knowledge to designers, both professional and unprofessional, what aspects of a book cover is important to consider to effectively compete for the consumers attention in the market. The research objective is to create a guideline for the creation of an ebook cover, which will create a more desirable product and add to the work flow efficiency. The most valuable currency people have today is time and money, and a design guideline will help those areas and make the process as quick and effortless as possible. Consequently, the purpose of this study will show concrete design principles for popular ebook covers which will help the designer to make wise decisions. To be able to fulfil the purpose, it has been phrased into one main question. What design elements are important to take into consideration when designing an ebook cover? To answer the research question eleven different appropriate applicable design principles have been chosen for analysation. Alignment, archetypes, colour, hierarchy, Horror Vacui, legibility, Ockham’s Razor, Picture Superiority Effect, proximity, Rule of Thirds and similarity. The thesis is based on the worldview constructivism. The term worldview meaning “a basic set of beliefs to guide action”. The constructivist worldview implies a belief where people seek understanding in a world where they live and work. They develop subjective meanings of their experiences which can be directed to certain objects. The thesis uses exploratory sequential mixed method, where the researcher begins with a qualitative research phase and explores the views of the participant. Mixed method is chosen based on the assumption that collecting diverse types of data provides a more complete understanding of the research problem than either quantitative or qualitative data alone. In conclusion, an analysation of covers from Amazon kindle have been made together with a guideline to avoid the worst of them. The guideline uses words and visuals to explain and point out important principles to consider when designing an ebook cover. It has a simplistic clear approach and the purpose of designing the guideline this way was to provide understanding to designers and non-designers alike. Since the sampling of ebooks have been broad, expanding over several genres, the guideline can be applied to ebook covers in general. This study contributes to the existing studies by providing insight into how design principles are applied to ebook covers and which principles are most important to take into consideration when designing an ebook cover.

Bokomslaget är ofta läsarens första möte med en bok och det är därför viktigt att bokomslaget tilltalar och sänder ut rätt signaler till konsumenten. Målgruppen unga vuxna, individer mellan 16 och 27 år, är enligt bokbranschen en grupp som är svår att nå. Svårigheten kan ligga i att det finns en viss okunskap i vad unga vuxna tilltalas av på bokomslag. Det är även en bred målgrupp med många olika sorters individer. Målet med denna studie är att ge en bild av vad målgruppen unga vuxna tilltalas av i ett bokomslag. Vi ville ta reda på hur viktigt bokomslaget är för val av bok, samt hur målgruppen ser på omslagets specifika designfaktorer färg, typografi, illustration, fotografi och efterbehandling. För att ge oss en bild av dagens kunskapsläge har litteraturstudier och intervjuer med formgivare av bokomslag genomförts. Genom en omfattande enkätundersökning och utförda fokusgrupper fick vi fram målgruppens syn och tankar kring bokomslag. Fokusgrupper utfördes för att ge oss en djupare förståelse rörande hur målgruppen ser på bokomslag samt ge oss ett djupare resonemang kring de olika bokomslagen. Resultatet visar att unga vuxna lägger stor vikt vid identitet och ett bokomslag bör således sända tydliga signaler som kan bekräfta läsarens identitet. Typografin ska vara lättläst. Målgruppen ser helst fotografiska bilder på bokomslaget och omslaget ska förmedla en känsla av bokens innehåll. Färger i en dovare färgskala tilltalar unga vuxna, rött och svart tycks vara de populäraste färgerna överlag. Efterbehandlingen (t.ex. lackering och foliering) på ett bokomslag bör vara sparsam och användning av färgen rosa lika så.
The reader’s first encounter with a book is through its cover. Therefore it is important that the cover is appealing and sends out the right message. According to book publishers, young adults (individuals aged 16–27 years) are hard to reach because of a lack of knowledge about what attracts them and because of the group’s diversity. The objective of this study is to show what young adults are attracted by in book cover designs, using an extensive questionnaire survey and two focus groups investigating their perceptions. The results show that young adults argue that a book cover must relate to the potential reader and corresponds to the reader’s identity. The typography should be easy to read. Photographic images are preferred and should depict the contents of the book. Unsaturated colors appeal to the target group – red and black seem to be the most popular colors, while pink is not preferred. Special effects (like varnish and foil) should be used with caution.

AbstractThis book summarizes the main results from research performed within the Collaborative Research Center “Interaction Modeling in Mechanized Tunneling” installed at Ruhr University Bochum, Germany. Topics being covered include all relevant aspects of mechanized tunneling ranging from digital design to steering support during tunnel construction. One subject area is concerned with the characterization and modeling of ground conditions, advance exploration methods as well as face support measures. A second subject area covers novel segmental lining designs with enhanced robustness and the interaction between the grout and the surrounding soil. A third subject area is concerned with computational simulation of tunnel advancement, logistics and excavation processes including monitoring strategies and digital models for real-time support of TBM construction. Finally, risk analysis and tunnel information modeling are completing the large range of topics. The individual research topics are each supported by computational models, experimental research and in situ monitoring.

AbstractResponding to the new environmental, ecological, and social emergencies requires a shift in strategies and urban design models. In the contexts of sustainability and resilience, green and blue infrastructure (GBI) is a wide-ranging concept that can help overcome the usual dichotomies of urban growth versus green or the built environment versus nature. This provides different benefits, both environmental and ecological and social and economic. In urban contexts, green spaces play a strategic role due to the number of typologies and functions that vary from neighborhood spaces to green, play, and sports facilities to protected areas of territorial scale. In this way, the planning and design of GBI take on the triple objective of regenerating fragile and degraded ecosystems from an environmental, social, and economic point of view. Focusing on this assumption, we describe how the GBI that develops along the axe of the Stura di Lanzo river in a multiscalar mosaic of soils at both local and territorial levels can determine options for the ecosystem quality of the metropolitan area of northern Turin. We suppose that mapping ecosystem services (based on a correct land use/land cover design) can support designing new urban and regional plans to improve resilience.

AbstractWe present an approach that is widely used in the field of remote sensing for the validation of single LUC maps. Unlike other chapters in this book, where maps are validated by comparison with other maps with better resolution and/or quality, this approach requires a ground sample dataset, i.e. a set of sites where LUC can be observed in the field or interpreted from high-resolution imagery. Map error is assessed using techniques based on statistical sampling. In general terms, in this approach, the accuracy of single LUC maps is assessed by comparing the thematic map against the reference data and measuring the agreement between the two. When assessing thematic accuracy, three stages can be identified: the design of the sample, the design of the response, and the estimation and analysis protocols. Sample design refers to the protocols used to define the characteristics of the sampling sites, including sample size and distribution, which can be random or systematic. Response design involves establishing the characteristics of the reference data, such as the size of the spatial assessment units, the sources from which the reference data will be obtained, and the criteria for assigning labels to spatial units. Finally, the estimation and analysis protocols include the procedures applied to the reference data to calculate accuracy indices, such as user’s and producer’s accuracy, the estimated areas covered by each category and their respective confidence intervals. This chapter has two sections in which we present a couple of exercises relating to sampling and response design; the sample size will be calculated, the distribution of sampling sites will be obtained using a stratified random scheme, and finally, a set of reference data will be obtained by photointerpretation at the sampling sites (spatial units). The accuracy statistics will be calculated later in Sect. 5 in chapter “Metrics Based on a Cross-Tabulation Matrix to Validate Land Use Cover Maps” as part of the cross-tabulation exercises. The exercises in this chapter use fine-scale LUC maps obtained for the municipality of Marqués de Comillas in Chiapas, Mexico.

AbstractIn Land Use Cover Change (LUCC) modelling, soft maps are often produced to express the propensity of an area to land use change. These maps are generally prepared in raster format, and have values of between 0 and 1, indicating the propensity of each pixel to change. In the literature, they are referred to as suitability, change potential or change probability maps. These maps are sometimes considered as the final product of a model (e.g. map of deforestation risk), but they can also serve as intermediate products that simulate the changes from which a hard-simulated land use/cover map can later be prepared using, for example, a cellular automaton. In both cases, it is essential to evaluate the soft map’s ability to identify the areas that are most susceptible to change. One way of assessing this ability is to compare the spatial coincidence between the real changes observed on the ground and the values estimated by the soft map. One would expect real change areas to coincide with high change potential values (near 1) and real no-change areas with low change potential values (near 0). This comparison can be made using various statistical approaches including Correlation Coefficient (Sect. 1), the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) (Sect. 2) and the Difference in Potential (DiP) (Sect. 3). Other measures, such as total uncertainty, quantity uncertainty and allocation uncertainty (Sect. 4), are used exclusively in the analysis of soft maps. In this chapter, we describe the fundamental steps involved in these four statistical approaches to validating the soft maps produced by a model. The four sections are illustrated with specific cases: to validate soft maps produced by the model, to validate soft maps produced by the model against a reference map and to validate soft maps produced by various models against a reference map. We use the Ariège database to validate the different soft maps (change potential and suitability maps) produced by the model by comparing them with real land use maps of the Ariège Valley for two dates (CORINE 2012 and 2018). All these validation techniques are carried out using raster data. As commented earlier, the soft maps produced by the model are continuous, ranked variables. We designed exercises using this original format. In other chapters of this book, the soft maps produced by the model are validated after reclassification of the original maps.

Topics covered from the model of values-based practice set out in chapter ‘Surprised by Values: An Introduction to Values-Based Practice and the Use of Personal Narratives in this Book’ include, person-values-centred care, the extended multidisciplinary team, shared clinical decision-making supported by dissensus within frameworks of shared values, and recovery practice. The bottom-line message is that incorporated into values-based practice, cultural values cease to operate as barriers to, and instead become effective vectors of, best practice in mental health.

AbstractThis chapter presents a brief overview of the policy design and theoretical environmental economic principles that underpin the concept of emissions trading systems (ETS) as a policy approach to address climate change. It discusses basic environmental economic principles pertinent to the development of market-based solutions to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) and co-pollutants. The chapter serves as the technical basis for the broader discussion that this book as a whole presents on the launch of the pilot phase of the Mexican ETS on January 1, 2020. Understanding international program design experiences, theoretical principles, and implementing best practices is key to ensuring Mexico’s success in the transition from the pilot or learning phase to an operational ETS compliance system. This will ensure Mexico fulfills its national climate policy goals and nationally determined contributions (NDC) under the Paris Agreement in a cost-effective manner, while also providing compliance flexibility to the industrial sectors covered under the program. A well-designed ETS ultimately provides the right incentives for industrial carbon emission reductions to drive cost-effective abatement and clean innovation. Secondly, this chapter presents a more in-depth review of policy developments focusing specifically on key implementation lessons from the two most advanced ETS systems in operation to date: (1) the European Union ETS and (2) California’s cap-and-trade program. In short, this chapter outlines a set of key policy lessons and design parameters to support the transition from the pilot Mexican ETS to an operational compliance phase in a socially just, environmentally sound, and cost-effective manner.

This paper focuses on children's book covers and further investigates the automatic typesetting algorithm for book covers based on the aesthetic measure algorithm. Before designing the algorithm, the element composition and relative positions of current common children's book covers were analyzed, and common types of cover elements and their identification methods were derived and their positions were quantified. The intermediate values of the positions of each type of element in the book cover in the sample were obtained, and then the initial positions of each type of element in the experimental elements were assigned according to the recognition results. And then this paper proposes an automatic displacement algorithm by generating random class objects with random seeds and then generating random numbers with the help of this object so that the objects can be displaced irregularly on the page to produce a large number of combinations with high aesthetic values. In order to verify the effectiveness of the automatic layout method given in this paper, the book cover layout is generated on the basis of the random given element size and the higher interface aesthetics values are calculated.

In this investigation is approached method for assessing and evaluation of colour repeatability and variation for digital electrophotography printing presses. Two of most popular midlevel electrophotography colour production presses were chosen. These presses are widely used in printing houses for the printing of book covers, posters, etc. in small circulations. The similar perception of quality of digital production to the offset printing quality (ISO 12647-2:2013 ) is required from most of the clients of printing houses, publishers, etc. One of the problems of midlevel electrophotography colour production presses are variations of colours in the printing run and variations of colours during the time – weeks, months, years. The variation degree depends on many factors like – the precision of internal calibration method and types of sensors during the printing run, quality of used materials, calibration precision made by press operator, temperature and humidity variation, etc. (Kachin, Spiridonov, 2000) Specially designed for experiment test forms have been printed on two of most widely used materials for book covers, business cards, etc. – 300 g/m2 matt-coated board and 300 g/m2 offset uncoated board. The evaluation method is based on colorimetrical and densitometrical measurements (Kachin, Spiridonov, 2004) of 100 continuous printed sheets. The experiment was repeated in different time periods -between 6 hours and 4 months, to collect data for colour variation between reprinting the same test images in the time.

This research discusses the importance of historical research as it serves to determine ideas and helps to group historical facts into explanatory scientific systems. Thus, by systematically documenting this knowledge contributes to develop and improve the theory and practice of education. Since design education in Sri Lankan is nearly two decades old, subject areas such as Graphic design lacks the needed literature on early Sri Lankan graphic practices that determine and contribute towards clarifying current and future trends built on historical research. The historical data that contributes to these subject areas are found at archival locations, and the preservation process in such locations limits us from the opportunity to observe historical data (primary data); that is required to establish new knowledge; in this case graphic design. Thus, this research aims towards documenting historical data towards building new knowledge. To achieve this, the historical data: specific to early book cover prints are compared with a literature survey on early printing technologies and on how they are identified. For this, the primary data (early book covers) from archival locations, were documented and visually observed with the use of a linen-prover magnifying glass with x4 enlarging capacity. The findings were compared with literature on different print technologies used during this era with the knowledge on how to identify them. The findings were compiled into stimuli for the analysis purpose. And finally, the gathered data was chronologically compiled as new knowledge. In conclusion, we were able to determine the technology used in early prints, more specific to print technology used during the early book publishing and printing industry of Sri Lanka. Since the data is chronologically (1870-1920) compiled we were able to identify patterns that help build new knowledge into other subject areas. It opens up discussion on historical trends in book cover designs, parameters of each technology used in Sri Lanka that influence book layout, its typography and letter composition for further research.

“Kacha Kacha Simona” was a pioneering chapter book series of Sinhala literature, categorized under chapter books the children story genre, authored and published from the year 2017 by the Sri Lankan writer I.M. Uthpala Madhuwanthi alias ‘Sandha Uthpalawee’. At present, “Kacha Kacha Simona” book series which is also considered a significant milestone of the author’s writing career has evolved into a trilogy targeting not only readers aged 7 to 11, but also beyond. The book series “Kacha Kacha Simona”, accompanied with delightful illustrations, captures the essence of the author’s childhood experiences. The series revolves around the protagonist, a talkative, playful, yet innocent girl with a strong determination for her studies. The books showcase Simona’s family, pets, hobbies, and her profound appreciation for the little joys of life. Also the storyline revolves around Simona’s journey as she prepares for and faces the grade five scholarship examination, a significant challenge that alters the course of her life. The first book in the series, “Kacha Kacha Simona” was an island-wide success, not only among children but also with adults. The author’s personal handling of story development, illustrations, book layout, cover design, publishing, distribution, sales and marketing showcased her multifaceted talent. The positive reception received from the audience including fan mail and drawings from readers inspired the author to create the second installment of the series, “Kacha Kacha Simona - Vibhaga Boothaya '' in 2020. In the year 2021, the third book “ Kacha Kacha Simona – Duwana Iskole” was also published and they all received an overwhelming amount of love and attention from young readers.The author introduced a unique page layout and a presentation style, setting a new trend in Sri Lankan children’s story books. The trilogy was also recognized for its educational value by the Ministry of Education as all three installments were certified as suitable for Sri Lankan school libraries. The series’s success can be attributed to four key elements consistently praised by its young audience based on their feedback. First, the narration style is engaging and captivating, keeping children enthralled throughout the reading experience. Second, humor is artfully woven into the narrative, providing moments of laughter and joy. Third, the author’s simple writing style resonates well with young readers, making the books accessible and relatable to their real life experiences. Fourth, the delightful illustrations complement the story, enhancing the overall appeal of the series. Both diffraction gratings and optical interference coatings are used in a wide range of applications. While the basic theory of thin-film optics is well covered in many optics text books and many books on the design, fabrication and application of optical coatings have been published, the treatment of diffraction gratings in optics text books goes little beyond presenting the grating and to date only three books on diffraction gratings have been published. The book edited by Petit1 describes the electromagnetic theory of gratings. The book by Hutley2 concentrates on the physics of gratings. Complementing the above two, the recently published book by Loewen and Popov3 aims at the applications of gratings. In addition, a volume in SPIE’s milestone series, edited by Maystre4, contains many important papers in all aspects of gratings up to 1992.

The challenges associated with prolonged human space exploration missions require sustainable and innovative approaches to ensure the health and well-being of astronauts. Many indigenous plants around the world can potentially serve as valuable resources for long-duration space missions. The raw material Ischnosiphon Axouma commonly known as (Terite) is indigenous to the island of Trinidad. Before the 15th century, terite was used in weaving by the island's indigenous inhabitants to make household items, such as baskets for fishing, jewelry, and utensils that lasted a lifetime. Some of the weaving techniques used have been passed on to generations and are present today. The terite is cut from the stalk and split into equal widths to extract the raw material strands. The roots are left intact to ensure continuous growth; they self-replenish. The strands produce eco-friendly craft items such as; tabletops, lampshades, book covers, plates, teacup holders, and more. The leaves have the potential to be used to make sanitary plates and bowls. The inner part of the stalk is used as a natural fertilizer for plants. Thus most of the Terite plant can be utilised with minimum wastage. In this paper, a design thinking approach is outlined to help us identify and evaluate potential experiments that could yield innovative solutions to the challenges of space habitation. It also identifies the areas of study and the considerations that are necessary to long-duration space travel and the potential for the development of space tourism within the Caribbean region.In this paper, we propose potential experiments to begin to explore terite as a sustainable and multifunctional resource in space. The experiments are as follows:(1) Cultivation and processing: Experiments done in this area would focus on optimizing the cultivation and processing of Terite in space habitats and other planets. This would involve testing the feasibility of growing Terite in different conditions, including various lighting and temperature settings. Additionally, we would investigate the best methods for processing Terite, such as drying and extracting its fibres, to maximize its usefulness as a resource.(2) Construction Application: these experiments would examine Terite's potential applications as a material for construction in space habitats. We would test its mechanical properties, such as its tensile strength, elasticity, and toughness, to determine its suitability for different engineering applications and astronaut personal items to survive under space conditions. Additionally, we would investigate its compatibility with other materials commonly used in space habitats, such as metals and plastics.(3) Reinforced 3D printing: the experiment would aim to determine whether Terite fibers can be a useful and sustainable reinforcement for 3D printing in space, providing additional strength and durability to printed objects while reducing the need for synthetic materials.By taking a design thinking approach, we can not only explore the potential of Terite as a valuable resource for space exploration and long-duration space missions but also uncover new opportunities for innovation and collaboration across different fields and disciplines. Ultimately, this approach can help us design more sustainable, efficient, and user-centred solutions for the challenges of space habitation.

Built fabrics and landscapes show the effects of abandoning or losing interest in the interrelations between natural and human actions. This contribution focuses on studies of cities and territories that have ceased to be the object of spatial policies attentive to the relationship between the need to live, maintain or care for green or natural spaces. After the systematic reduction of urban environments to simple green covers, morphological reading allows the recognition of traces of park systems or green infrastructures, whose communities often do not remember. The research's focus has shifted from the building to the green space structure. This displacement of interest makes it possible to find commons cultures that have acted on the territory of Liège (industrial city) on the one hand, through the building’s extension and on the other hand, through the project of forests, walks, squares, parks and public gardens. Now, these fragmented places become the main resource for reorganizing natural and human systems in order to offer new - social and spatial - coherence for tomorrow. Thus the historical green systems become a strong structuring link which serves to seek new dialectics of balance between existing fabrics and green systems. This system’s regeneration stands, on the one hand, to the hybridization of materials - water, green and buildings - and, on the other hand, to the physical and mental memory of the inhabited environments that populations keep. Green systems impose themselves as powerful vectors for the construction of new socio-spatial balances of cities and territories of globalization, as in the study case for the landscape systems in Liège and for the water and landscapes infrastructure in Chaudfontaine.References Foxley, A. Today, the environment is threatened by different sources, and the environmental impact of plastic trash has become increasingly critical day by day, with the use of multi-layered plastic presenting particular difficulties because of its slow breakdown and enduring nature. Therefore, the study aims to predesign some useful art, lifestyle, and industrial products made from upcycled materials and address the problem of multi-layered plastic trash in an inventive way.For this study, a detailed survey was conducted among 106 randomly selected people aged 18 to 55 years. A comprehensive questionnaire was developed and performed to determine their opinion about the use of plastics, their impact on the environment, and sustainable products. They may buy or use any product made of upcycled plastics, and the answers to these questions helped to shape the environmental carelessness of multi-layered plastic. Further information about the possible market for these products was obtained from end-sellers. To collect the multi-layered plastic packets like Maggie, chips, biscuits, etc., we appointed a few people and took the help of a small restaurant or food stall to store the packets. By involving local communities, this collection technique attempts to lessen the negative effects of multi-layered plastic on the environment. Finally, based on user feedback and market research, we try to develop a few products after following the design process. After the analysis of the questionnaire, it was found that most users were aware of the side effects of multi-layered plastics and their adverse effects on the ecosystem. From the research, one interesting point came out: people are interested in buying products made of recycled plastic. So after brainstorming and based on the users and market trends, developing useful products by using design-thinking ideas was the focus of the research. Plastic packets that were collected were turned into yarn and weaved into textiles to make a variety of items, including laptop bags, pouches, totes, book covers, and bags. Through the development of handicraft skills, this method not only promoted employment prospects but also addressed environmental issues. According to the study's findings, implementing such a strategy can successfully increase public knowledge of inventive plastic recycling and help to lower environmental pollution. Additionally, the approach offers a viable way to create jobs while encouraging the incorporation of environmentally beneficial behaviors into daily life. This study promotes a change in approach towards creative, neighborhood-focused solutions to address the expanding issue of plastic trash.Finally, we can conclude that awareness related to multi-layered plastics is required and simultaneously increases the utilization of the used plastics for art, lifestyle products, and any industrial products that not only give an alternative to the users but also bring new sources of employment.

The Association of American Universities, the Association of Research Libraries, and the Association of University Presses have published a final report assessing the success of their five-year pilot project to encourage sustainable digital publication of and public access to scholarly books. The associations launched the Toward an Open Monograph Ecosystem (TOME) project in 2018 to publish humanities and social science scholarship on the internet, where these peer-reviewed works can be fully integrated into the larger network of scholarly and scientific research. The project engaged a network of more than 60 university presses and ultimately produced more than 150 open-access scholarly works. The books cover a wide range of topics in many disciplines, including philosophy, history, political science, sociology, and gender and ethnic studies. The pilot was designed to last five years, and the sponsoring associations committed to assessing its value to its target audience at the end of that period. The report analyzes whether the community of authors, institutions, libraries, and presses that participated in the pilot found it helpful. Author Nancy Maron of BlueSky to BluePrint surveyed and interviewed authors and TOME contacts at participating institutions to assess how each benefited from the pilot—from increased global readership to stronger relationships among libraries, research deans, and faculty.

Ice is an important part of the Alaska ecosystems and can form through dynamic (e.g., frazil) or static (e.g., thermal) processes. In Alaska, both freeze-up and breakup ice jams occur, however breakup jams during the spring snowmelt period are most common. Historically there have been many river systems in Alaska that have chronic ice jam issues. These ice jams have resulted in several significant ice jam floods. There are ice jam mitigation techniques that can be used to either provide state and local emergency managers warnings of a potential ice jam or reduce the impacts of a jam. Common relatively low-cost mitigation methods that can be implemented prior to a jam forming are monitoring and detection of movement, mechanical or thermal weakening of the ice cover. Permanent measures are also effective and maybe the best option in specific locations. These measures include structures to keep flood waters from inundating areas (e.g., levee) or they can be designed to hold back ice fragments moving downstream (e.g., ice boom and pier structures). Climate change impacts to ice processes are important for Alaska and additional investigations will be needed to quantify the ecologic, hydrologic, and societal impacts.

This book presents in-depth reports on promising new interventions that have been developed and important programmatic changes that have been achieved by operations research in Latin America between 1995 and 1998. The INOPAL III project has made advances in five areas including access and quality of services, integration of family planning and other reproductive health services, financial sustainability, post-abortion care, and emergency contraception. Each of these topics are represented by at least three studies conducted in two or more countries. The operations research projects discussed under each topic are not replications of a single study. They use different research designs and address different questions. Nevertheless, when taken together, they provide managers and decision-makers with a body of programmatically relevant information on each broad topic covered.
