The Harmony of the World and the Drying of Faeces. Juliusz Świecianowski and His Works Juliusz Świecianowski (1834–1900) was a member of the Academia di San Luca, Academia di Belle Arti in Bologna and the Congregazione dei Virtuosi al Pantheon in Rome (today Pontificia Insigne Accademia di Belle Arti e Lettere). He was an architect by education but, above all, a theoretician and inventor. He published his universalistic aesthetic theories alluding to occultism and Kabbalah in many languages. At the same time, he described and patented practical technical devices – faecal dryers, crematoria, and disinfection furnaces – whose task was to free the world from harmful miasms. He was remembered as an eccentric and visionary, believing that the essence of the world’s beauty lies in harmony resulting from the combining of all aspects of nature and human creation and that the salvation for this beauty is the development of the art of hygiene, which will free the world from the harmful fumes of civilization.

Geguritan Siti Badariah (GSB) represent Bali traditional baler-letters, that interested to be researched because there are moral concept related to Hinduism teaching through to woman figure. Relate to the mentioned, this research focused to characters woman in GSB. This research study belles-lettersthrough analysis feminist criticizes by literature review and hermeneutic method, and also objective intrinsic approach. In general geguritan in Bali use Kepara's Balinese as its medium, but on the contrary to GSB as one of the Bali traditional belier-letters use Malay, but in usage of art convention such as pupuh and padalingsa, the auther tries to fulfill orders convention. GSB as Bali traditional belier-letters and Malay as its medium, containing cultural values which beller-letters background, and the happening to acculturation cultural, between Balinese culture and Malay. The comprehending woman's character in GSB, feminist theory in studying problems to woman's physically, psyches, and sociologies, passing description to main figure. Woman's character physically an psyches, women have beautiful charming and face to every men. As well as beautiful physically, woman also has holy heart, and smart intellectually.

The article is a commentary to philosophical terms of David Hume’s “Of Essay Writing”, that became necessary in working on its Ukrainian translation. “Of Essay Writing” is an essay on conversation that was published in English in 1742 in the first edition of “Essays, Moral and Political” by D. Hume. The commentary focuses on two concepts that are important for understanding the content and cultural and historical context of an essay. First, the concept of “Republic of Letters” is considered. This Renaissance metaphor was in active use in the XV-XVIII centuries and described the conversational community of European intellectuals, formed by correspondent networks. In the age of Enlightenment, an alternative to correspondence was conversation in the newly formed public sphere of communication, concentrated in salons, clubs and other common social spaces. In his essay, D. Hume contrasts the concept of "Republic of Letters" with the concept of “Empire of Conversation”, emphasizing the difference between the worlds of “learned” and “conversible”, where “learned” use correspondence and “conversible” participate in public conversation. Secondly, this commentary examines the concept of "Belles Lettres" - a term of Renaissance origin, the part of humanists educational project “bonnae litterae”, which revealed the role of “studia humanitatis” (humanities) in shaping the aesthetics of writing (including letter writing). David Hume associate "Belles Lettres" with the concept of “taste”, which is a central category of his empiricist aesthetics. According to Hume, the taste comes from specific experience, the components of which are the humanities. At the same time, “Belles Lettres” requires the experience of conversation, and essay-writing is a means, which D. Hume proposes to use to spread the achievements of the “Republic of Letters” in the community of the “Empire of Conversation”.

Nevertheless when the ship crashed, the captain did his duty and went down with the ship. Captains lead lonely, but not necessarily isolated, lives. What about editors? I do not wish to drown, but do lament the lack of letters (or correspondence as it is called elsewhere in the English-speaking world). Despite the pleas, nobody answers the call for letters to the editor. Like the captain, I want to know what's going on and what people think.

The article focuses on the fact that modern Ukrainian linguistic research is mainly devoted to the functioning of appositive epithets and metaphors syntaxemes in the poetical type of the belles-letters style. Therefore, the aim of the paper is an attempt at a comprehensive analysis of the tropical meanings of the appositive syntaxeme proper and semi-predicative appositive syntaxeme in texts of in prose and poetical belles-letters style, as well as a description of their stylistic roles. The article reveals that, in most cases, appositive syntaxemes are epithets, similes, and metaphors. Іt has been found that in belles-letters text, the appositive syntaxeme in detached and non-detached positions can take the form of the following tropes: personification, oxymoron, paronomasia, antithesis, amplification. Moreover, it is capable of expressing irony and sarcasm. The author records the cases of the use of semi-predicative appositive syntaxemes in the roles of synecdoches, periphrases and hyperboles. The author concludes that all appositive syntaxemes with tropical function create bright images of human characters as well as the other creatures, objects and phenomena that surround them. They allow writers to convey their thoughts, attitudes, and the peculiarities of their perception of the world.

AbstractWe shall argue that Burkert's etymology deriving the name Apollo from a Dorian word for 'assembly', απελλα, is linguistically and historically impossible. This means that the possibility of Anatolian origin is open again. It is argued that Apollo is a Pre-Greek-Anatolian name. The expected proto-form of this name is found in the name Appaliunas, a god of Wilusa/Ilios mentioned in a Hittite letter. This strongly suggests Anatolian origin of the name. This is confirmed by the Homeric epithet αυκηγενηζ, which has long been recognised as an archaic formation meaning 'born in Lycia'. This fits well with the strong Anatolian connections of Apollo as well as his mother Leto and his sister Artemis. L'étymologie proposée par Burkert du mot Apollon comme dérivé du mot apella, 'assemblée', est impossible, pour des raisons linguistiques et historiques. Il est donc possible que le mot, et le dieu, est d'origine anatolienne. Le nom est pré-grecanatolien. La proto-forme expectée est trouveé dans le nom Appaliunas, dieu de Wilusa / Ilios mentionné dans une lettre hittite, ce qui est une belle confirmation d'une origine anatolienne. Colin Lewis was Professor of Geography at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa from 1989 until his retirement at the end of 2007. In 1990, with the strong support of the incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Dr Derek Henderson, he instigated the Certificate in Change Ringing (Church Bell Ringing) in the Rhodes University Department of Music and Musicology - the first such course to be offered in Africa. Since that date he has lectured in the basic theory, and taught the practice of change ringing. He is the Ringing Master of the Cathedral of St Michael and St George, Grahamstown, South Africa. This correspondence was sparked by the author's article: "Bells and Bellfounders of the Eastern Cape, South Africa" which appeared in The Ringing World No. 4477. 14th February 1997, pp. 161-162.

Enfant naturelle, jeune femme divorcée, mère privée de ses enfants, elle nétait pas destinée à la carrière des lettres et fut pourtant libraire, éditrice, journaliste, reporter et chroniqueuse pendant la Grande Guerre, romancière. Elle animait à la fin de la guerre un salon littéraire qui avait gagné une solide réputation. Elle multiplia les activités professionnelles sans jamais perdre le fil conducteur qui la guidait dans une recherche centrée sur l'individu : mieux se connaître et comprendre les autres. Les thèmes qui traversent son œuvre nous situent très près de l'autobiographie. Les femmes y occupent une place privilégiée, sujets et objets du regard souvent novateur de narratrices féminines. Une pléiade d'artistes et de politiques l'entourait à commencer par Colette, l'amie de la Grande Guerre, et aussi Valentine de Saint-Point, Lucie Delarue-Mardrus, Rachilde, Séverine, Marguerite Durand, Willy, Robert et Henry de Jouvenel, Henri Barbusse, Laurent Tailhade ou Gaston de Pawlowski. Elle partagea la vie de Gustave Téry, célèbre directeur de L'Œuvre. Elle était très appréciée pour ses qualités humaines et professionnelles.

In order to reconcile the absence of sexually deviant witch figures (succubae, demonic women, etc.) within the formation of American national literature in the nineteenth century with the fantastic elements found in European variations on the gothic, my thesis aims to demonstrate transatlantic variants of erotic signifiers attached to witch figures in nineteenth-century gothic fiction and mediums across national traditions. I will begin by tracing the transatlantic and historical impact of Heinrich Kramer and Jacob Sprenger’s Malleus Maleficarum—an early modern handbook of sorts used widely in witchcraft inquisitions—on Early American witch trials, specifically where its influence deviates from a sexualized conception of the witch and where a different prosopography of the historical witch emerges. Next, I will assess a short sample of nineteenth-century American pulp fiction to demonstrate the historical impact of America’s erotically decoded witch type on fictionalized versions or caricatures of the witch. In doing so I hope to create a reading that informs a more transatlantically complex representation of The Scarlet Letter. Finally, in order to underscore the significance of these national and historical departures of The Scarlet Letter as a gothic novel, I will contrast Hawthorne’s novel with a selective reading of nineteenth-century gothic texts from England and France that employ the witch or demonic feminine motif in an erotically codified and fantastic setting, namely using Old World magic and history that draws from French and English traditions.To demonstrate the significance of erotically coded witches in the British tradition, I will briefly examine Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s “Christabel” as a gothic text that relies heavily on the erotic affect encoded in the figure of Geraldine. I will also touch on Prosper Mérimée’s “La Vénus d’Ille” and Théophile Gautier’s “La Morte Amoreuse,” two remarkable short stories that highlight the sublime terror of sexually deviant, occult female figures. Through such a collection of readings of witches and erotic, occult women I hope to amplify a more latent theme underlying The Scarlet Letter and America’s conflicted relationship with the gothic tradition: namely its crucial lack of erotic enchantment as a channel for the experience of gothic affect, the fantastic, and even sublime terror.

Au milieu du XVIIIe siècle, la Franche-Comté rejoint le réseau des sociétés savantes qui ont pour objectif de contribuer « au progrès des sciences et à la perfection des talents » : une académie des sciences, belles-lettres et arts est établie à Besançon. Les académiciens comtois entreprennent dès lors de nombreux travaux et s’emploient à favoriser l’émulation de leurs concitoyens en organisant régulièrement des concours. De cette activité qui perdure jusqu’en 1789 témoignent les archives manuscrites de la compagnie, aujourd’hui conservées à la Bibliothèque municipale de Besançon et consultables en ligne sous forme numérisée. Menée avec un regard littéraire, l’exploration de ce vaste fonds d’archives a permis de sélectionner un échantillon de discours restés inédits et d’en proposer une édition critique. Le genre de l’éloge, très lié à l’institution académique, méritait que l'on entreprenne ce travail de transcription et d’annotation : on trouvera ainsi dans cet ouvrage une série de pièces épidictiques, composées par les académiciens eux-mêmes ou provenant d’individus étroitement liés à l’académie par leur fonction de prédicateurs ou leur participation aux concours. On a en particulier cherché à démêler quelles étaient les sources et les influences de ces différentes productions comtoises, à analyser l’originalité et le style de celles-ci, tout en apportant les éclaircissements historiques utiles à leur compréhension, le genre épidictique procédant volontiers par allusions. L’étude met ainsi en avant la présence de l’éloquence littéraire en Franche-Comté à la veille de la Révolution, et les efforts d’appropriation de ses codes génériques par les lettrés de la province
In the middle of the 18th century, la Franche-Comté joined the network of learned societies whose objective was to contribute “to the progress of science and to the perfection of talents”: an academy of sciences, belles lettres and arts was established in Besançon. Comtois academicians thus undertook many works and were committed to promoting the emulation of their fellow citizens by regularly organizing competitions. The company’s handwritten archives, which today are kept in the Besançon municipal library and may be consulted on line in digitized form, bear witness to this activity, which continued until 1789. Conducted from a literary viewpoint, the exploration of these vast archival collections has made it possible to select a sample of previously unpublished speeches and to propose a critical edition of them. The encomium genre, closely linked to the academic institution, was worthy of our undertaking this transcription and annotation work : thus, we find in this work a series of epideictic plays, composed by the academicians themselves or by individuals having close ties to the academy through their role as clergymen or their participation in competitions. We sought in particular to unravel the sources and the influences of these various productions, to analyze their originality and style, while providing the historical clarification needed to understand them, the epideictic genre lending itself freely to the use of allusions. The study thus highlights the presence of literary eloquence in Franche-Comté on the eve of the French revolution, and the efforts to appropriate its general codes by the scholars of the province

Jahrhundert schließt sich die Franche-Comté dem Kreis der Gelehrtengesellschaften an, die « zu dem Fortschritt der Wissenschaften und der Vervollkommnung der Talente » beitragen sollen : zu dieser Zeit wird in Besançon eine Akademie der Wissenschaften, der schönen Literatur und der Künste gegründet. Dieses Werk schlägt also eine Folge von epidiktischen Stücken vor, die entweder von Akademikern selbst verfaßt wurden, oder von Einzelnen, die als Prediger oder als Wettbewerber ein enges Verhältnis zur Akademie hatten. In der vorliegenden Studie werden ins besondere die Urquellen und Einflüsse nachgeforscht, welche die Schriften der Akademiker von Besançon geprägt haben, und die Eigenart und der eigentümliche Stil dieser Schriften untersucht. Nützliche bzw. notwendige historische Erläuterungen werden dem Leser zu einer besseren Verständnis der Texte helfen, die – dem epidiktischen Genre gemäß – oft anspielungsreich sind. En 1663, Jean-Baptiste Colbert, surintendant des bâtiments du roi, réunit une petite équipe composée de membres de l’Académie française : la Petite Académie est née. Chargée de rédiger l’histoire du Roi-Soleil par les devises, les inscriptions et les médailles, elle va rapidement devenir un acteur incontournable de la politique publicitaire royale. En 1701, elle reçoit un règlement qui l’institutionnalise et devient Académie royale des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. Dès le début du XVIIIe siècle, l’institution va diversifier ses activités, passant de tâches panégyriques à des études historiques plus fines. L’Académie, institution royale, devient alors le reflet de la figure du prince lettré. Elle est un maillon essentiel de la République des Lettres. Le fonctionnement de cette Académie sur une période de cent ans est le reflet d’un monde qui change, coincé entre les valeurs du Grand Siècle et les innovations du Siècle des Lumières
In 1663, Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Superintendant of the King’s Buildings, gathered a small team composed of members of the Académie Française: the petite Académie was born. Entrusted with the responsibility of writing the history of the Roi Soleil (Louis xiv) in tokens, inscriptions and medals, it soon became an essential actor of royal propaganda. In 1701, it was institutionalised and became the Académie Royale des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres (Royal Academy of Inscriptions and Letters). In the early 18th century, the institution started to add some finer historical studies to its panegyric task. The Académie, a royal institution, then became a reflection of the figure of the Lettered Prince. It thus became an essential link in the Republic of Letters. The way this academy functioned during a century reflects a changing world, between the values of the Grand Siècle (17th century) and the innovations of the period of Enlightment in the 18th century

Les mémoires de l'Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres sont un témoignage inestimable sur les relations entre l'Europe et la Chine pendant les années 1700-1750. Trois grands sujets ressortent de ces études menées principalement par Nicolas Fréret et Etienne Fourmont : la langue, la littérature et la chronologie. Ces derniers ont tenté de trouver les réponses aux questions posées lors des nombreux débats dans les milieux intellectuels. Fréret a rassemblé des faits historiques tirés de la littérature chinoise et les a analysés minutieusement. Il en a conclu que la langue chinoise n'est pas une langue philosophique et que la chronologie chinoise est authentique mais qu'elle ne doit pas remonter au delà de 2000 ans av. J. -C. Fourmont s'est davantage concentré sur les études linguistiques. Il est connu comme un grand orientaliste, notamment grâce à la rédaction d'un dictionnaire français-chinois et d'une grammaire chinoise
The memoirs of the Academy of Letters and Literature are an invaluable testament to the relationship between Europe and China during the years 1700-1750. Three major areas emerge from these studies carried out mainly by Nicolas Fréret and Etienne Fourmont : language, literature and history. They have tried to find answers to questions raised during many debates in intellectual circles. Fréret gathered historical facts learned from Chinese literature and has analyzed them in detail. He concluded that the Chinese language is not a philosophical language, and that the Chinese chronology is authentic, but it does not go further back than 2000 BC. Fourmont, concentrated on linguistic studies, is known as a great Orientalist, especially for writing a French-Chinese dictionary and a Chinese grammar

L'objet de ce travail conçu comme une contribution à l'histoire des contenus et des méthodes de l'enseignement littéraire français est de cerner ce qu'a été cet enseignement au temps de la fondation des lycées, en s'appuyant sur l'examen de l'oeuvre de Louis de Fontanes, rédacteur des instructions officielles de 1803, et plus tard grand-maître de l'université impériale. L'étude de la carrière de ce personnage, poète placé au premier rang à la fin de l'ancien régime, journaliste actif pendant la révolution, professeur en 1796, membre de l'Institut, puis législateur et président du corps législatif sous le consulat, permet en effet de dégager les options esthétiques et sociales qui ont prévalu lors de la fondation des lycées. Fils des Lumières, Fontanes accueille avec bienveillance les premières réformes de la constituante; mais les violences puis la terreur font de lui un promoteur de la "réaction" antijacobine et monarchiste. Et c'est dans un mouvement de rejet des libertés "philosophiques" et de fidélité proclamée à la tradition des Belles-Lettres issue de l'antiquité et du classicisme français qu'il développe le plan d'études de 1803. C'est aussi en écrivain a qui l'élaboration patiente d'une oeuvre et la méditation sur le patrimoine littéraire inspirent une conception de l'apprentissage de l'art d'écrire et de la formation
This study meant as a contribution to the history of the methods and the contents of teaching in France, aims at analysing this teaching at the time when the first "lycees" were founded, throughi a scrutany of the works of Louis de Fontanes who wrote the 1803 official directives for schools, and later became great master of the Imperial university. The study of his career - he was a poet ranked among the best before 1789, a journalist involved in the revolution, a professor, a member of the "Institut", a law-maker and the president of the legislative body under the consulate - enables us to bring out the aesthetic and social options that prevailed when the "lycees" were first started. As a son of the enlightenment, Fontanes welcomed the earlier reforms passed by the constituante, but the revolutionary violences made him an active supporter of the anti-jacobinite and monarchist reaction. As a result, the 1803 curriculum reflects both his movement away from the "philosophical" liberties and his proclaimed fidelity to the literary tradition derived from the ancients and french classicisl; and it also mirrors his experience as a writer and his meditation on the literary heritage

Le cas de Valentin Conrart (1603-1675), premier secrétaire de l'Académie française, célèbre de son vivant alors qu'il n'avait pas publié de livre, permet de revisiter le fonctionnement de l'espace des lettres au XVIIe siècle ainsi que le sens que pouvait revêtir, pour un bourgeois parisien de cette époque, une carrière dans les lettres. Conrart a construit son autorité et sa notoriété dans les lettres sur sa fonction de publicateur : il corrigeait les productions de ses amis-auteurs, suivait le processus d'impression de leurs oeuvres, et les diffusait auprès de ses relations. Il a également rempli cette fonction de publicateur indissociablement de textes et de réputations auprès de ses relations qui n'appartenaient pas au monde des professionnels des lettres: membres des élites urbaines, relations familiales, pasteurs. Le cas de Conrart permet ainsi de contribuer à l'histoire de la publication, fonction lourde d'enjeux socio-politiques dans la société d'Ancien Régime. Conrart a exercé cette activité grâce à sa position officielle de secrétaire du roi, spécialisé dans la délivrance des privilèges de librairie, mais aussi hors de tout statut, grâce à des actions d'intermédiaire entre auteurs, libraires et publics. Conrart a retiré de ses actions et de sa notoriété une autorité qui doit être saisie dans l'ensemble des composantes de son identité sociale: notable au sein de sa famille, il a joué un rôle important au sein de la communauté protestante parisienne, et noué une alliance étroite, fondée sur des échanges de services très variés, avec certains membres de l'aristocratie parisienne. L'analyse des pratiques d'écriture et de publication de Conrart montre comment celui-ci a pris bien soin de ne pas être identifié à un professionnel des lettres, métier peu honorable au XVIIe siècle, mais aussi comment les lettres ont été un instrument de conciliation des différents aspects, éventuellement contradictoires, de son identité sociale.

Complaints are frequently made of the vanity and shortness of human life, when, if we examine its smallest details, they present a world by themselves. The most trifling objects, retraced with the eye of memory, assume the vividness, the delicacy, and importance of insects seen through a magnifying glass. There is no end of the brilliancy or the variety. The habitual feeling of the love of life may be compared to ‘one entire and perfect chrysolite,’* which, if analyzed, breaks into a thousand shining fragments. Ask the sum-total of the value of human life, and we are puzzled with the length of the account, and the multiplicity of items in it: take any one of them apart, and it is wonderful what matter for reflection will be found in it! As I write this, the Letter-Bell passes: it has a lively, pleasant sound with it, and not only fills the street with its importunate clamour, but rings clear through the length of many half-forgotten years.

The paper analyzes Sasamegoto (Whispered Conversations, 1463–1464), a treatise by Shinkei, the influential Buddhist poet and thinker of the Muromachi period (1392–1568). In this treatise on the collaborative poetry of “linked verse” (renga), the author addresses the category of the “Way” (michi) or the “Way of Poetry” (uta-no michi), which he interprets on the basis of ancient Chinese philosophers (Confucius and Lao Tze) and early Japanese authors of Zen school (e. g., Mujū Ichien, who wrote the Shasekishū — The Collection of Sand and Rocks, 13th century) and even endows it with a new meaning. In Shinkei’s view, the Way is not only mastery and its perfection. This is a sum total of many diverse things: the entire corpus of belles-lettres, theoretical treatises, schools, teachers and disciples, ideal poets, trends, styles, inner discipline, lifestyles, the past and the present.

The Upper Paleolithic in Switzerland is so far only known by the Magdalenian (ca. 18000 12000 BP). Only in seven of the about fifty Magdalenian sites known in Switzerland pieces of portable art were found (Braun, 2019). The most well-known Swiss site where portable art was found is the Kesslerloch. According to Hneisen (1993) Swiss Magdalenian portable art can be divided into two groups: engravings and figurative sculpture. Some of them are decorated either with signs or animal figures. The engravings are mostly on rein-deer antlers, but also on bones, stone and jet. The majority of the engravings are on objects of utility as btons percs, spear points and other tools. In addition to figurative themes such as animals and a possible animal-human representation, there are mainly signs and other ornamental patterns (Bosinski, 1982 Braun, 2019 Hneisen, 1993). The term figurative sculptures is used to describe objects of utility, some of which are sculpted, such as spear thrower ends decorated with horse heads, so-called spindle-shaped sculptures and very stylized female statuettes. Apart from a musk ox head from the Kesslerloch, no other animal sculptures have yet been found in Switzerland. The figurative sculptures are less frequent than the engravings (Bosinski, 1982 Braun, 2019 Hneisen, 1993). Numerous works of portable art in Switzerland are similar to works of portable art of Southwest France and of the French Pyrenees, as f.i. the sculptured spearthrowers (Bandi, Delporte, 1984 Bosinski, 1982 Braun, 2019 Garrod, 1955 Leesch et al., 2019 Stodiek, 1993). The rock shelter of the Roc-aux-Sorciers at Angles-sur-lAnglin (Vienne, France) is one of the archaeological reference sites for the Upper Paleolithic. The sculpted, painted and engraved frieze was gradually brought to light in its archaeological context by Susanne Cassou de Saint-Mathurin and Dorothy Garrod from 1949 onwards (Saint-Mathurin, Garrod, 1950). A wealth of archaeological material was discovered alongside the parietal art, comprising numerous works of portable art, tools made of animal bone, jewellery, etc. It was very rapidly observed that the portable art and the parietal art shared the same graphic and thematic conventions. For example, images of female bodies are rendered in high relief, in a monumental way, but also in the form of small statuettes. Our research has demonstrated the undeniable intra-site links between the portable art and the parietal art (Pinon, 2012). Here we propose to broaden this analysis within a well-identified culture of the Middle Magdalenian known as the Magdalenian of Lussac-Angles spearpoints. At the time of the discovery of the Magdalenian site of La Marche in 1937 (Vienne) (Lwoff, Pricard, 1940), some similarities had been identified between this site and that of Le Roc-aux-Sorciers, where the discoveries dated back to 1927 (Rousseau, 1933). These similarities are also perceptible in shared techniques (Chehmana, Beyries, 2010), as well as in the production of objects in hard organic materials such as the Lussac-Angles spearpoints (Pinon, 1988), the jewellery in fossil mammoth ivory (Dujardin, Pinon, 2000), the engraved horse incisors (Mazire, 2009) and the figurative art (Bourdier et al., 2016 Fuentes, 2016). We propose to further explore the links between these two sites through the analysis of the dynamic processes of reworking images. In particular we examine the engraved plaquettes of La Marche and the parietal art of Le Roc-aux-Sorciers to bring these links into perspective.
