One of the biggest challenges with species conservation is collecting accurate and efficient information on population sizes, especially from species that are difficult to count. Bats worldwide are declining due to disease, habitat destruction, and climate change, and many species lack reliable population information to guide management decisions. Current approaches for estimating population sizes of bats in densely occupied colonies are time-intensive, may negatively impact the population due to disturbance, and/or have low accuracy. Research-based video tracking options are rarely used by conservation or management agencies for animal counting due to the perceived training and elevated operating costs. In this paper, we present BatCount, a free software program created in direct consultation with end-users designed to automatically count bats emerging from cave roosts (historical populations 20,000–250,000) with a streamlined and user-friendly interface. We report on the software package and provide performance metrics for different recording habitat conditions. Our analysis demonstrates that BatCount is an efficient and reliable option for counting bats in flight, with performance hundreds of times faster than manual counting, and has important implications for range- and species-wide population monitoring. Furthermore, this software can be extended to count any organisms moving across a camera including birds, mammals, fish or insects.

This study investigates the factors driving foraging behavior of Daubenton’s bats ( Myotis daubentonii (Kuhl, 1817)). We analysed the importance of food availability, energy demand, and intraspecific competition in regulating foraging activity and the selection of near versus distant foraging sites. At two foraging patches, insect abundance, foraging activity, and the number of foraging individuals were monitored using sticky traps, telemetry, spotlight counting, and light sticks. Population size was determined by flight path counting. General linear model analysis showed that bat distribution among foraging patches was influenced by distance to roosts, month, bat population size, and the displacement pressure exerted by competing individuals. Foraging time was influenced by food resource accessibility and individual cost/benefit ratio. From June to August, population density, intraspecific competition in foraging patches, and transfer flights between patches and day roosts were most frequent (play-off time). Our results suggest that differences in foraging activity of Daubenton’s bats are mainly driven by differential energy demand and less so by food availability. In times of high energy demand, hunting is avoided when prey are scarce. During play-off time, density spillover in near foraging patches occurs and therefore more distant patches come into use in accordance with predictions by the ideal free distribution theory.

AbstractFlying foxes of the genusPteropusare predominantly island taxa, with high levels of endemism, and face high risks of extinction. Their ecological and economic importance in island ecosystems has been widely recognized. Here we investigate the population size and conservation status of the VulnerablePteropus voeltzkowi, endemic to the western Indian Ocean island of Pemba, Tanzania. Direct counts and patch counts were used to determine abundance of flying foxes at roost sites, supplemented with evening dispersal counts, which were conducted to test accuracy of counting techniques under varying conditions of visibility. We estimate that the population size is now a minimum of 18,200–22,100, thus validating reports of annual increases by in-country monitoring teams since the last documented population survey of 4,600–5,500 bats in 1995. Taking into account differences in the counting methodologies for roosting bats we estimate that the population size could be as high as 35,600 individuals. We identified 44 occupied roosting sites, with just four of these supporting up to 87% of the population. Roost disturbance represents a continuing threat to this species and was found to influence roost occupancy and colony size. The implications of the population increase for the local human community are discussed and recommendations provided for continued monitoring and future management of this species on Pemba Island.

Echolocation calls of most bats are emitted at high intensities and subject to eavesdropping by nearby conspecifics. Bats may be especially attentive to “feeding buzz” calls, which are emitted immediately before attack on airborne insects and indicate the potential presence of prey in the nearby area. Although previous work has shown that some species are attracted to feeding buzzes, these studies did not provide a well-controlled test of eavesdropping, as comparisons were made between responses to natural and altered signals (e.g., forward versus backward broadcasts of calls). In this study, I assessed the importance of feeding buzzes by conducting playbacks of controlled echolocation stimuli. I presented free-flying Brazilian free-tailed bats, Tadarida brasiliensis (I. Geoffroy, 1824), with echolocation call sequences in which feeding buzz calls were either present or absent, as well as a silence control. I determined levels of bat activity by counting the number of echolocation calls and bat passes recorded in the presence of each stimulus, and found significantly greater bat activity in response to broadcasts that contained feeding buzzes than to broadcasts without feeding buzzes or to the silence control. These results indicate that bats are especially attentive to conspecific feeding buzz calls and that eavesdropping may allow a bat to more readily locate rich patches of insect prey.

Abstract We analysed the sex and age composition of a large colony of Nyctalus noctula (605 specimens), wintering in Kyiv, Ukraine. Age was identified in 113 individuals using the method of counting growth layer groups in dentine. Males contained ca. 70 % both in the colony and in the sample of animals with the estimated ages. Males and females of all ages were in good body condition. There were bats from 0+ to 7+ years old in the sample. In males, 0+ age class was represented by 38 %; 1+ class, by 20 % of individuals. In females, 0+ and 1+ year old individuals were found in similar numbers: 29 % and 32 % correspondingly. The observed sex ratio and proportions of males and females across age classes cannot be explained only by demography. The data are interpreted in terms of migratory behaviour and mating strategy of the species: the unusual female age structure is possibly due to age-specific preferences in wintering habitat selection and search for potential mating partners.

Biological collections are the basis of the Earth’s biodiversity knowledge and most of them are regional collections. Here we present two collections from the Federal University of Espírito Santo—Mammal Collection (UFES-MAM) and the associated Animal Tissue Collection (UFES-CTA)—which have been the main repository for mammal specimens collected in Espírito Santo, mostly georeferenced (~ 90%), and available in public databases. Thus, our objective with this essay was to point out the contributions of these collections to the knowledge of the diversity of mammals in the Atlantic Forest. At the same time, we present the contributions they return to society and the scientific community, highlighting the main obstacles and challenges those regional collections face. Despite being regional, UFES-MAM and UFES-CTA stand out nationally for having biological material from a wide variety of species—mainly rodents, marsupials, and bats—also counting on a series of primate tissues collected during the outbreak of wild yellow fever in Southeastern Brazil from 2017 to 2018. These collecting efforts contributed to 42 new mammal species records for Espírito Santo, and 25 species that had already been registered in the state but were listed only in out-of-state collections or reported in literature without voucher specimens. We hope that the information reported here are examples of good practices and increase knowledge and visibility of the rich collection that these regional collections house.

Skulls are often used to identify small mammals, and most identification keys to small mammals have been developed on the assumption that whole skulls will be available. However, the skulls of small mammals are seldom found intact in predator pellets or nests, and the bones of several individuals are often scattered and mixed, making counting impossible without the use of a specific cranial part. In addition, only a few keys include all the species found in the eastern provinces of Canada.Mandibles readily resist degradation by the gastric acids of both avian and mammalian predators and are often found intact in food caches of mustelids and in bat hibernacula. We therefore designed an illustrated dichotomous key to small mammals (mean mass <5 kg) of eastern Canada based on diagnostic mandible characters (including the teeth and one dentary bone). We identified and confirmed diagnostic characters to distinguish 55 species from the orders Lagomorpha, Rodentia, Soricomorpha, Carnivora, and Chiroptera. These diagnostic characters are based on a review of the literature and were confirmed by measurements performed on both museum and trapped specimens. In order to facilitate identification, photographic illustrations are provided for each couplet of the key.The ability to identify small mammals using their mandibles will reduce the number of skull components needed and has proven to be a useful tool in the study of the diet of predators. This key may also be helpful in identifying bats in the genera Myotis, Perimyotis, and Eptesicus, which are presently affected by the spread of white-nose syndrome (caused by Pseudogymnoascus destructans) throughout the eastern part of Canada.

Plastic bag pollution is a growing global environmental concern. Several countries have recently approved bans on the use and distribution of plastic bags. In the USA, 22 of the 50 states have adopted multiple city/county ordinances. Most of these bans are introduced in coastal cities/counties. The local drivers, i.e. economy, geography, benefit, life-style, cost of living, and educational attainment, all impact the level and commitment to plastic bag bans. Currently, battles between support and opposition to these bans are typically financially driven; jobs and environmental health being main impact categories. This paper identifies several problems affecting the complete adoption of plastic bag bans in the USA, and gives some corresponding strategies to enhance the effectiveness and success of policy implementation.

Bats are ecologically important around the world, partially because they eat insects. They are globally threatened by human activities. The extent of bat populations in South Asia has not been as well-monitored or researched as other parts of the world. Determining the size of a large colonial bat population is difficult, and can be aided through video footage or photographs. This study aimed to determine the population size of Tadarida plicata that inhabit the Gomantong Cave system in Borneo. Images of an evening emergence were used to determine the speed of flight, and then the number of bats to emerge from the cave through particle analysis in ImageJ. The counts, subsequent extrapolation, and comparison to previous estimates of flight speed indicated a population size approximately half the size of previous estimates, emphasizing the importance of continued monitoring. Using ImageJ particle analysis was deemed to be an effective way of estimating the number of bats in large populations.

In this thesis, manufacturing of microirradiators, electrodeposition of radioactive elements such as Ni-63, and applications of these radioactive sources are discussed. Ni-63 has a half life of 100 years and a low energy beta electron of 67 keV, ideal for low dose low linear energy transfer (LET) research. The main focus of the research is on the novel Ni-63 microirradiator. It contains a small amount of total activity of radiation but a large flux, allowing the user to safely handle the microirradiator without extensive shielding. This thesis is divided into nine chapters. Properties of microirradiators and various competing radioactive sources are compared in the introduction (chapter 1). Detailed description of manufacturing Ni-63 microirradiator using the microelectrode as the starting point is outlined in chapter 2. The microelectrode is a 25 µm in diameter Pt disk sealed in a pulled 1 mm diameter borosilicate capillary tube, as a protruding wire or recessed disk microelectrode. The electrochemically active surface area of each is verified by cyclic voltammetry. Electrodeposition of nickel with a detailed description of formulation of the electrochemical bath in a cold "non-radioactive setting" was optimized by using parameters as defined by pourbaix diagrams, radioactive electroplating of Ni-63, and incorporation of safety regulations into electrodeposition. Calibration and characterization of the Ni-63 microirradiators as protruding wire and recessed disk microirradiators is presented in chapter 3. In chapters 4 through 6, applications of the Ni-63 microirradiators and wire sources are presented. Chapter 4 provides a radiobiological application of the recessed disk microirradiator and a modified flush microirradiator with osteosarcoma cancer cells. Cells were irradiated with 2000 to 1 Bq, and real time observations of DNA double strand breaks were observed. A novel benchtop detection system for the microirradiators is presented in chapter 5. Ni-63 is most commonly measured by liquid scintillation counters, which are expensive and not easily accessible within a benchtop setting. Results show liquid scintillation measurements overestimates the amount of radiation coming from the recessed disk. A novel 10 µCi Ni-63 electrochemically deposited wire acting as an ambient chemical ionization source for pharmaceutical tablets in mass spectrometry is in chapter 6. Typically, larger radioactive sources (15 mCi) of Ni-63 have been used in an ambient ionization scenario. Additionally, this is the first application of using Ni-63 to ionize in atmosphere pharmaceutical tablets, leading to a possible field portable device. In the last chapters, chapters 7 through 8, previous microirradiator experiments and future work are summarized. Chapter 7 illustrates the prototype of the electrochemically deposited microirradiator, the Te-125 microirradiator. In conjunction with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Te-125m is a low dose x-ray emitting element determined to be the best first prototype of an electrochemically deposited microirradiator. Manufacturing, characterization, and experiments that were not successful leading to the development of the Ni-63 microirradiator are discussed. In chapter 8, future work is entailed in continuing on with this thesis project. The work presented in the thesis is concluded in chapter 9.

ECLAIRs, the hard X-ray imager of the Chinese-French SVOM mission, is dedicated to the detection and localization in near real-time of cosmic transient sources in the energy range from 4 to 150 keV. This instrument is a wide field camera, equipped with a detection plane paved with 6400 CdTe Schottky detectors, which allows to create hard X-ray images of the sky thanks to a localization system called "coded mask". The work presented in this manuscript details the design, the realization and the measurement of the performances of hybrid modules of 32 detectors read by an ASIC (called XRDPIX modules), which constitute the basic bricks of the detection plan, and which make it possible to reach unequalled performances for this type of instrument with a threshold in energy equal to 4 keV. After having posed the problem of detection of transient cosmic sources in X-rays, based on the astrophysical context of the SVOM mission, and then detailed its main instrument, I present, in this thesis, my work on the realization of large pixelated detection plans for gamma-ray astronomy, with in particular my contribution to the study and the realization of the XRDPIX module. The development of the XRDPIX modules, calls for both a low noise design and the use of innovative technologies. The CdTe detectors are biased down to -450V and regulated at low temperature (nominally 20°C) in order to minimize the leakage current and to limit the polarization effects. The low energy threshold required for the space mission is reached thanks to a thorough characterization of the elements constituting the 200 flight XRDPIX, which form the ECLAIRs camera. I present in detail the physical and technological characteristics of these modules, the various stages of their development, justifying the solutions and technical compromises that have marked their manufacture. Then, based on an abundant statistical sample, obtained during the numerous tests and qualifications carried out on several hundreds of modules and sub-modules, I present the results of measurements which demonstrate the excellent performances of the XRDPIX module, in terms of spectral resolution, low energy threshold, gain and counting. Additional studies are also shown, in order to complete the validation of the XRDPIX by analyzing the influence of various physical parameters on the performances, such as temperature. In conclusion, thanks to these abundant data analyses, and to models of the total equivalent noise, I propose optimal settings for two key configuration parameters: the bias value for the high voltage and the peaking time, which allow to obtain the 4 keV energy threshold required by the SVOM mission, with a good uniformity on the whole detection plane. Finally, I present this feedback, coupled with the study of the key parameters that determine the sensitivity of a wide field imager in the hard X-ray domain (detection area, energy range, field of view, ...), which leads me to propose avenues for the realization of ambitious instruments with significant gains in sensitivity in the future

AbstractThe first case of COVID-19 was detected in Kenya in March 2020. Initial government responses included several containment measures such as school closures, movement limitations, and bans on public gatherings. These measures had many follow-on effects, in particular for the country’s vulnerable adolescents. Between June 2020 and February 2021 two round of quantitative data was collected in four counties in Kenya (Kilifi, Kisumu, Nairobi, and Wajir) via phone surveys (n = 3,921). In addition, qualitative in-depth interviews were conducted in person in November 2020 with adolescents, parents, and other key stakeholders (n = 234). Results showed that the pandemic’s effects on adolescents were wide-reaching and often differed by gender. While 85% of students reported doing some form of remote learning during school closures, 98% of them reported considerable challenges with less than one-third using technology (i.e., computers, phones, television, and radio) to support their learning. Over half of the adolescents reported depressive symptoms and over three-quarters reported skipping meals in the past week due to COVID-19. Twelve percent of girls and 9% of boys reported skipping healthcare services in the past one month, with the most common reason being lack of money to access the needed service. Once school had fully re-opened, 16% of girls and 8% of boys who were enrolled at the start of the pandemic had not re-enrolled. Given the wide, multi-sectoral nature of the impacts of the pandemic, a coordinated response involving education, health, and gender actors, as well as government and non-government partners, will be needed to mitigate the long-term negative impacts for Kenya’s adolescents, in particular girls and other marginalized groups.

<em>Abstract</em>.—We conducted a stock assessment of Shoal Bass <em>Micropterus cataractae</em> in the upper Chipola River in Jackson and Calhoun counties, Florida from 2007 to 2012 to aid in the species’ conservation. Shoal Bass are currently listed as a species of special concern by the American Fisheries Society and are a recreational sport fish species in Florida. Previous Shoal Bass research in Florida was limited in terms of quantified habitat use or population abundance. Although one of the potential threats to Shoal Bass in the Chipola River has been described as sedimentation, little information existed regarding abundance, growth, mortality, or fishing effort. Shoal Bass and sympatric Largemouth Bass <em>M. salmoides</em> were collected by electrofishing from three study reaches. Modified Schnabel population estimates from mark– recaptured fish were used to describe abundance in 2009, 2010, and 2011. A roving creel survey was conducted in 2010 and 2011 to provide effort, total catch, catch per unit effort (fish caught per angler-hour), and harvest estimates. Mean total length at age was described by von Bertalanffy growth curves for Shoal Bass collected in 2008 and 2010, and growth differed between years. Total annual mortality (<EM>A</EM>) for Shoal Bass averaged 57% and was greater than total annual mortality for Largemouth Bass (<EM>A </EM>= 32%, <EM>P </EM>= 0.009) at this system. Missing or underrepresented year-classes from the 2008 and 2010 Shoal Bass age samples suggested highly variable recruitment. Strong Shoal Bass year-classes were associated with low median flows and low flow variation in spring and summer. An abundant population of Shoal Bass exists in the Chipola River, and the fishery received low angling harvest and directed effort. However, Shoal Bass remain potentially threatened by sedimentation, variable hydrologic events, and its confined range and habitat requirements.

Abstract Anyone who has made anything of a study of the violin family knows that the label often to be found by peering through the bass soundhole is quite likely to be false or misleading. Some would say that counting all the German and French ‘factory’ violins bearing Gothic ‘Stradivarius’ facsimile labels and the like, well over half of all labelled instruments are likely to be ‘wrong’ rather than ‘right’. No experienced appraiser looks at the label other than, at most, for confirmation of his educated guess at the maker and date of the instrument. It is the shape of the back and the table, the manner of the scroll and soundholes, the look of the varnish, and the size and ‘feel’ of the instrument (amongst other detailed ‘fingerprints’) which lead to the attribution.

<em>Abstract.</em>—Recreational fishing throughout the Hudson River estuary from the federal dam at Troy (river kilometer [rkm] 243) to the George Washington Bridge (rkm 19) was investigated during March 2001 through March 2002. Aerial counting surveys and angler interviews at nearly 200 access points were used to estimate fishing pressure, catch and harvest, catch rates, and various angler attributes. Fishing pressure for the mid-March through November period was estimated at 446,621 angler-hours. Most effort occurred in the late spring by anglers north of the Bear Mountain Bridge (rkm 74). Angling from boats comprised 72.6% of total effort. The total number of fish caught and harvested was estimated at 212,426 and 44,479 individuals, respectively, representing 31 species plus blue crab <em>Callinectes sapidus</em>. Most of the total catch was by boat anglers, although over the entire survey period shore anglers harvested the most fish. In sequence, striped bass <em>Morone saxatilis</em>, river herring <em>Alosa </em>spp., and white perch <em>M. americana </em>were the three most abundant species caught, whereas river herring, white perch, blue crab, and striped bass formed most of the harvest. Catch per unit effort (CPUE) and harvest per unit effort (HPUE) of shore anglers (0.69 fish/h and 0.22 fish/h) were higher than that of boat anglers (0.44 fish/h and 0.02 fish/h). Most anglers throughout spring sought striped bass, whereas during summer and fall boat anglers sought primarily black bass <em>Micropterus </em>spp., with much effort occurring during tournaments. Shore anglers were less focused and sought a broader variety of species. As a group, anglers fishing south of the Bear Mountain Bridge were less aware of fish consumption advisories due to contaminants than anglers fishing elsewhere in the estuary.

<em>Abstract.-</em>Demographic studies have indicated that, since 1990, Kentucky’s urban population has experienced an 18% increase while its rural population has expanded by less than 1%. These demographic changes, coupled with a decline in fishing license sales, focused the need to develop and increase fishing opportunities in and around urban areas. In 2005, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources initiated a pilot urban fishing program aimed at providing urban residents with high quality fishing opportunities close to home. Five pilot lakes, located within four of Kentucky’s most populated counties, were selected to receive regular stockings of rainbow trout <em>Oncorhynchus mykiss</em>, channel catfish <em>Ictalurus punctatus</em>, largemouth bass <em>Micropterus salmoides</em>, and hybrid bluegill <em>Lepomis macrochirus </em>x <em>L. cyanellus</em>. Rainbow trout were stocked at each lake in April and October. Channel catfish, largemouth bass, and hybrid bluegill were stocked in May and June. Monthly stocking rates were 202 trout/ha, 34 channel catfish/ha, 12 largemouth bass/ha, and 81 hybrid bluegill/ha. Creel and angler attitude surveys were conducted at two of the pilot lakes from April through August 2006 to determine angler catch and satisfaction. Although fishing pressure at these two lakes was high, most anglers practiced catch and release. Catch rates were 1.03 fish/h at Stein Lake and 0.79 fish/h at Upper Sportsman’s Lake. Angler attitude survey results indicated that the majority of anglers interviewed were not aware of the program and did not know that regular fish stockings were occurring at the lakes. The typical angler fishing these lakes was a white male between the ages of 30 and 49, who was satisfied with his fishing experience regardless of the number or size of fish caught. Further studies need to be completed to compare results from this study, and to refine stocking and marketing techniques used in the program.

The use of a digital cylinder drive for exoskeletons was proposed in the recent year as a means to save weight, installation space, and energy. Also the hydraulic actuation of the switching valves of the digital drive was brought into discussion, in particular by a so called hydraulic digital counter concept. That concept was originally invented to realize a digital hydraulic amplifier. It uses a mechanical input and feedback, transfers this into binary switching states of the valves which switch the chambers of the digital cylinder either to tank or system pressure. It is now reconsidered with a hydraulic input, a special design of the valves appropriate for the sub-kilowatts power ranges of exoskeletons, and a special control strategy. The configuration of this system with a true binary counting property requires the input pressure thresholds to grow exponentially with the number of binary stages of the drive. That limits the number of feasible stages to approximately five or six, complicates the mechanical parts of the valves which realize the hysteretic response to the pilot pressure, and increases the hydraulic power for valve actuation. To overcome these problems the system is configured as a quasi binary counter which jumps over certain digits if the input flow is monotonous, thus, requires a reversal of input flow to realize those digits. A theory and a numerical model of the counter in this configuration and a proper counting control strategy of the hydraulic input are presented. With this much higher number of digits can be realized and valve design and configuration are eased.

Model-based state of charge (SOC) estimation with output feedback of the voltage error is steadily augmenting more traditional coulomb counting or voltage inversion techniques in hybrid electric vehicle applications. In this paper, the state (SOC) estimation error in the presence of model parameter mismatch is calculated for a general lithium ion battery model with linear diffusion or impedance-based state dynamics and nonlinear output voltage equations. The estimation error due to initial conditions and inputs is derived for linearized battery models and also verified by nonlinear simulations. It is shown that in some cases of parameter mismatch, the state, e.g. SOC, estimation error will be significant while the voltage estimation error is negligible.

Solid scintillation proximity membranes were prepared for measuring surface in laboratories contaminated by the all types of radionuclides, such as H-3, C-14, and Cs-137 etc. Polysulfone scintillation proximity membranes were prepared by impregnating Cerium Activated Yttrium Silicate (CAYS),an inorganic fluor, in a membrane structure. The inorganic fluor-impregnated membranes were applied to detect the radioactive surface contamination directly without the aid of a scintillation cocktail. The preparation of membranes was divided into two processes. A supporting polymer film was made of casting solution consisting of polysulfone and solvent, their cast film being solidified by vacuum evaporation. CAYS-dispersed polymer solutions were cast over the first, solidified polymer films and coagulated either by evaporating solvent in the solution with non-solvent in a coagulation bath. The prepared membranes had two distinguished, but tightly attached, double layers: one is the supporting layer of dense polymer film and the other results revealed that the prepared membranes were eficient to monitor radioactive contamination with reliable counting ability. For enhancement of pick-up and measurement efficiency, the membrane was prepared with the condition of different membrane solidification. The scintillation produced by interaction with radiation and CAYS was measured with photomultiplier tube. The test results of the cocktail-free wipe test showed that the prepared membranes were efficient to monitor radionuclide-contaminated areas with the good counting ability as well as with the decrease of overall production of radioactive waste.

The purpose of this particular study is to search for methods aimed at preventing extremist behavior in educational and other organizations. An interdisciplinary approach was used in this work, as well as methods of analysis, synthesis, generalization and classification, psychodiagnostic methods. As a result, a package of methods has been proposed in order to identify the propensity for extremist activity among students and university staff. Among them there are the following ones: the Methodology for diagnosing the dispositions of violent extremism, the Methodology for identifying the “Bullying Structure”, the Bass-Darki Aggressiveness Questionnaire, Destructive Communicative attitudes, Socio-psychological adaptation. Their capabilities and limitations have been also described. The proposals for improving labor legislation are substantiated and put forward, including an instruction legalizing the use of psychological techniques in Article 70 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation (hereinafter referred to as the Labor Code of the Russian Federation). It is concluded that the use of these techniques in relation to employees is permissible only if they diagnose their business qualities. As for the students, in relation to them, the use of the considered package of methods is permissible only on a voluntary basis. Any comprehensive studies of this kind at the intersection of law and psychology in the field of countering extremism in the higher education system in our country have not been conducted.

he Northwestern Hub for Bat Population Research and Monitoring (NW Bat Hub), as part of the North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat), developed a regional protocol (Rodriguez et al. 2019) to guide multi-agency collaborative implementation of summertime acoustic surveys to track the status and trends of bat populations. See Loeb et al. (2015) and Reichert et al. (2021) for a description of the full NABat plan including winter bat colony counting. The protocol provides guidance specifically for parks in the National Park Service (NPS) North Coast Cascades, Upper Columbia Basin, and Klamath Networks. This protocol implementation plan (PIP) outlines how the protocol will be implemented by NW Bat Hub and National Park staff within this three-network/three-state (Washington, Oregon, Idaho) region. Specific topics for NPS implementation of the protocol that require additional details beyond those outlined by Rodriguez et al. (2019) are the specific NPS requirements for data management, analysis, reporting, and a budget for NPS to contribute to long-term sustainability of the NW Bat Hub and protocol implementation. Surveys will be conducted on and adjacent to NPS lands collaboratively by NPS and NW Bat Hub staff. Roles and responsibilities for protocol implementation with be established prior to each field season depending on staff capacities and interests. This PIP is versionable and it will be updated periodically alongside updates to the protocol itself, and as other operational changes are made. The PIP serves to document why and how NPS will engage as an NABat partner in the Pacific Northwest and with the national NABat program led by US Geological Survey Fort Collins Science Center (USGS-FORT), the role of summertime acoustic monitoring as a way for NPS to meet its vital signs monitoring goals for bats (Garrett et al. 2007), the stewardship of acoustic data by NW Bat Hub and USGS-FORT on behalf of NPS, and the Hub?s role as a source of coordinated conservation expertise for NPS and other regional collaborators. This PIP contains a detailed overview of how the protocol will be used in National Park units in the Pacific Northwest. It is intended for use by NPS and NW Bat Hub coordinators and team leaders, program administrators, field crew leads, and data analysts who need to be conversant in the details of the program. Standard operating procedures that detail the operational-level information can be located in the protocol narrative by Rodriguez et al. (2019).

The Plain City Southwest (SW) and Ogden Bay 7.5′ quadrangles are in Weber, Box Elder, and Davis Counties. The quadrangles include parts of the communities of Hooper, Warren, and Reese, the Harold Crane Waterfowl Management Area, several waterfowl wetlands, as well as the southwestern corner of Willard Bay Reservoir. The North Fork and South Fork of the Weber River f low south into the Ogden Bay Wildlife Management Area at the edge of Great Salt Lake. The northwestern part of the Ogden Bay quadrangle and the southwestern part of the Plain City SW quadrangle contain most of Little Mountain, a small bedrock mountain with about 500 feet of relief. The western side of Little Mountain as well as the northern part of the Plain City SW quadrangle are part of Willard Bay of Great Salt Lake. Small meandering channels flow into the bays from local drainages. Numerous evaporation ponds related to industrial minerals production cover the central western and northwestern part of the Plain City SW quadrangle, obscuring geologic deposits. This mapping project will provide the basis for identifying and delimiting potential geologic hazards in future Utah Geological Survey (UGS) geologic hazard maps, part of the UGS Geologic Hazards Mapping Initiative (Castleton and McKean, 2012). Mapping for the project was done on stereographic pairs of aerial photographs from the following sources: black-and-white aerial photographs from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (1958, 1965, 1971a, 1971b). Mosaics of some USDA photographs were accessed using the Weber County web services (USDA Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, 1937, 1962, 1980, 1985). Additional aerial photography sets from the National Agricultural Imaging Program (NAIP) were used (Utah Geospatial Resource Center [UGRC], mid-1990s, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2016a, 2018a, 2021a) as well as high-resolution (15cm) Hexagon imagery (Utah Geospatial Resource Center, 2021b). Most Quaternary unit contacts, including human disturbed areas, were mapped using two lidar elevation datasets (Utah Geospatial Resource Center [UGRC], 2016b, 2018b). The geologic map was made by transferring the geology from the aerial photographs to a geographic information system (GIS) database using the programs ESRI ArcPro and Global Mapper v. 18 for a target scale of 1:24,000. Cross section A-A′ was created in Adobe Illustrator. Field-based investigations included shallow subsurface investigations in targeted areas with a soil auger. Materials from 1 to 3 meters were observed, documented, and sampled, which aided in preparing descriptions of most Quaternary units.
