Mangrove is a plant that plays a significant role in the balance of the ecosystem and coastal environment. Batam Island which is one of the island in Batam island become one of the areas rich in mangrove plants. As time goes by, mangrove forests are getting worse. This research uses SPOT-5 imagery data in analyzing mangrove density value in Batam island with MSAVI (Modified Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index) method. The results of this study have mangrove density in Batam Island which is divided into four classes, which is very tenuous, tenuous, medium, and very tightly where Batam Island is dominated by a class of density. Theoretically, NDVI values range from -1 to +1 but the mangrove vegetation index values are generally in the range between +0,1 to +0,7. NDVI values greater than this range are associated with a representation of a better level of vegetation health in the islands of Batam.

This study aimed to look at the institutional condition of the current watershed management and institutional models (management authority) which were relevant to Batam Island in the future. The data collection was conducted by interview techniques and was validated through focus group discussions. The data were described and analyzed with SCP (structure, conduct, performance) method for relevant stakeholders’ data, legislation, and with KIPA (quadrant interpretative performance analysis) method for data of interest and power of stakeholders. The results showed that the watershed management institutional in Batam Island was still overlapping. According to the regulations, the Management Board (BP) of Batam Island was given the authority to manage and to use land and water; on the other hand the Local Government (Mayor) was facilitated by BPDAS KEPRI (Watershed Management Institute of Riau Islands) to also arrange an integrated watershed management. The results of discussions showed that BP Batam was an institute of having interest and power as well as key position in achieving successful watershed management. Based on this study, it was suggested that BP Batam should be given authority in watershed management in Batam Island, which keeps referring to the norms, standards, procedures, and indicators set by the central government.

Community potential can develop with the support of human resource skills. Batam as an archipelago has great potential in tourism and product development. In general, the development of infrastructure as a physical resource in the city of Batam has been sufficient to the islands around Batam, such as the island of Jaloh. The potential of the island as a national and foreign tourist spot needs the support of communication skills, especially English communication. most of the community activities are fishing and marine product management. In addition, the potential of the island as a tourist spot is an attraction for domestic and foreign tourists to visit and enjoy the beauty of the island of Jaloh. Based on community activities and the potential for island development, it is necessary to support English communication skills to make it easier to interact with visitors from abroad. This community service aims to improve English communication skills in supporting the potential of tourism islands and marine products. The achievement of the goals in this service is carried out using discussion and presentation methods regarding strategies and techniques of English communication skills. Coaching focuses on how to speak practically, practical speaking, pronunciation, daily vocabulary and listening. There needs to be coaching in communication in order to increase self-confidence. PT Pertamina (Persero) Riau Islands proposed the installation of electrical power for the fuel storage tank terminal on Sambu Island with a capacity of 7 MVA. Currently, Sambu Island is still receiving electricity by operating a Diesel Power Plant (PLTD) with diesel fuel. Seeing that the nearest electricity supply from Sambu Island is Pulau Belakang Padang Electricity, then as a business solution to be able to meet the demand of PT Pertamina (Persero), PT PLN Batam will build a submarine cable between Sambu Island – Pulau Belakang Padang to distribute electricity from the Power Plant in Batam to Sambu Island through the Belakang Padang Island. PT PLN Batam must obtain a reference regarding the feasibility of investing in the construction of a submarine cable between Belakang Padang – Sambu Island. To get this reference, an investment analysis must be carried out to determine the business feasibility of this submarine cable development. The business feasibility parameters to be analyzed are NPV (Net Present Value), IRR (Internal Rate of Return), BCR (Benefit to Cost Ratio) and PBP (Payback Period). To further refine the business feasibility analysis, a sensitivity analysis was carried out to see the effect of changes in investment parameters. After conducting investment analysis, it was found that the Capital was carried out with a portion of 30% from equity and 70% loans from domestic financial institutions after comparing with foreign financial institutions, and the construction of this submarine cable was declared feasible because it met all the feasibility parameters. business, where NPV > 0, BCR > 1, IRR > Discount Rate and PBP < Loan Tenor. With the construction of the submarine cable, PT PLN Batam will get a potential profit of Rp. 12.358.560.473, - in the first year after the operation of the submarine cable with an electricity tariff of Rp. 2,054 /Kwh. This electricity tariff is cheaper than the electricity tariff using PLTD of Rp 3,000/Kwh.

Batam is the third most visited city of foreign tourists due to the strategic location that closes to Singapore and Malaysia. It becomes a distinct advantage with the number of tourists visiting. In addition to marine tourism and shopping tourism, Batam has agro-tourism in the islands around Batam Island. Cafe Zore in Rempang Island's dragon fruit plantation is often visited by domestic and foreign tourists. Foreign tourists often experience difficulties in communicating with English because the employees could not speak English. It is aimed to develop employees' English skills through methods of community education and training with lecturing, discussion and demonstration techniques. The result of this training was the improvement of the English spoken ability. To sum up this PkM activity is that English communication skills are very important to welcome foreign tourists visiting and support the government to develop tourism in Batam

Chinese people have long been a subject in the social history in Indonesia and their emotional expressions in front of the public especially have been affected by history. The previous empirical research findings in the Batam Island showed that Chinese people had unique emotional expression and this uniqueness may inflict interpersonal conflict with people of other ethnicities. This research was held to describe the emotional expression of the Chinese in the Batam Island. Their expressions compared with those of non Chinese. The adapted Display Rules Assessment Inventory (Matsumoto & Yoo, 2007) were distributed to the research participants (men and women in the Batam Island, totally 195 Chinese and 132 non Chinese). The analysis data result were presented in percentage and it showed that there were several similarities and differences between these two ethnic groups on (1) the display rules of seven basic emotions and (2) the display rules of emotion toward targeted persons, both in public and in private places. Based on the socioculutral paradigm, this finding will help solve any interpersonal – related problems faced by the Chinese with people of other ethnicities in the Batam Island.

This thesis examines pond aquaculture as a development strategy in the Philippines, with particular reference to its impact on the local environment and the livelihoods of local people.
A theoretical framework is provided by recent literature in development studies and human geography, which attempts to move away from an essentialist and ethnocentric development praxis, and towards a locally-based, participatory process of empowerment. From the perspective of such 'alternative' development ideas, orthodox strategies involving modernization, formalization of economic activities, and resource mobilization, can be reassessed.
The promotion of pond aquaculture--and the widespread mangrove deforestation associated with it--is shown to be a strategy endorsed and supported by national and international development agencies. What is often overlooked, however, is the local ecological and economic importance of mangrove ecosystems. This study examines the effects of mangrove removal and fishpond development on the entitlements of people in three coastal communities in the Philippines. Aquacultural development is shown to have detrimental effects on the integrity of the coastal ecosystem and the livelihoods of certain groups of local residents; a rich common property resource is converted into a privately-owned system of cultivation. While benefits accrue to those with access to the capital necessary for the construction of fishponds, the costs of development are borne largely by mangrove gatherers and artisanal fisherfolk, whose share of a diminishing resource base is steadily declining. For these marginal groups, aquaculture is shown to provide few compensating economic benefits.
The study supports, through concrete local evidence, the criticisms made of orthodox approaches to development, and the need to construct attitudes and strategies which are more attuned to local sustainability and equity.

Since Batain Island was targeted for development by Soeharto's New Order government in the late-1960s, it has undergone a significant transformation, physically, economically and politically. This study describes and analyses that transformation. Whilst the results of development on Batam Island before 1988 were quite limited, and highly reliant on the oil industry, changes to the investment regime in 1989, as well as other reforms, has brought farreaching changes - a massive influx of investment and the growth of an export-oriented manufacturing sector. What was once a sparsely populated island of subsistence farmers and fishermen is today a seemingly thriving manufacturing, industrial and tourism area. Through an examination of domestic factors, such as state and non-state institutions, individuals and business, as well as external factors such as international economic conditions and foreign capital, the study also considers what the experiences of developing Batam Island tell us about the policy-making processes in Indonesia, and about Indonesian political economy under the New Order in general. It is argued that Indonesian political economy is characterised by what might best be described as elite politics. Patrimonialism and the closely-connected features of patronclient relationships and intra-elite politicking have consistently dominated the policymaking processes under the New Order government presided over by President Soeharto. This is not to deny the existence of other influences. Indonesian societal groups have demonstrated that they can have policy input. Likewise, external variables have affected the policy environment However, whilst societal influences are not a major constraint on the Indonesian state's policy-makers, it is recognised that policy-making is not confined simply to actors within the state apparatus. In tracing Batam's development, various political and economic interactions become apparent - between domestic and international variables, between public and private interests, between state and civil society, and within the state itself - illustrating that while the main focus of studies of Indonesian political economy should be on the state, nonstate influences must also be analysed in order to explain how political and economic actions in Indonesia are best understood.

Increase in demand for clean energy is one of the strategic issues in Indonesia nowadays, considering the significant economic growth of the country. A conventional LNG supply chain is not the best solution taking into consideration its high investment. The possibility of using a small scale LNG supply chain concept (Mini LNG) is recently sought by the government and private sectors in Indonesia. It is even more promising when we consider the amounts and number of stranded gas fields in the country. One of the main obstacles to the development plan is the geographical position of Indonesia as an archipelagic country. This paper presents a case study of LNG supply chain model of 10 mmscfd Gas Sales Agreement (GSA) in Batam and its design of LNG transportation model from Batam to Siantan-West Kalimantan [1]. The distance between Batam and Siantan is approximately 392 nautical miles. Two main objectives are covered in this paper. The first one is an implementation of the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to select the best location for mini LNG plant, and the second one is to design the LNG supply chain model based on optimization approach. The AHP model uses a pairwise comparison of 4 (four) qualitative attributes and 14 (fourteen) sub-attributes. 3 alternatives of location for mini LNG plant are evaluated, namely: Tanjung Uncang, Pemping Island and Janda Berhias Island. A sensitivity analysis by varying the weight of some critical attributes is also conducted to ensure that preferred location is sensitively selected with minimum error. The optimization of the LNG supply chain model is carried out by means of Gradually Reduced Gradient (GRG) methods. The Objective is to attain one design that will minimize investment (cost). Decision variables of the model are LNG plant capacity, storage tank capacity in loading and receiving terminal, vessel size, number of round trip, number of operating vessels, regasification capacity at the receiving terminal, and others.
