Abstract Barová Cave is located in the central part of the Moravian Karst (the Czech Republic), on the right slope of Josefovské Valley; it is the outflow part of Rudické propadání (Rudice Sink) – Býčí skála (Bull Rock) cave system. Even since its discovery by A. Sobol in 1947, Barová Cave has been known as important palaeontological site, with well-preserved fauna of the Late Pleistocene. In the summer of 2011, a landslide of sediments revealed yet unexamined fossiliferous positions, and started the current research activity. There were discovered skeletal remains of these 21 taxa of vertebrates between 2011 – 2017 in Barová Cave: bear from the cave bear group (Ursus ex gr. spelaeus), cave lion (Panthera spelaea), wolf (Canis lupus), cave hyena (Crocuta crocuta spelaea), brown bear (Ursus arctos), lynx (Lynx lynx), wolverine (Gulo gulo), fox, probably red (Vulpes cf. vulpes), marten (Martes cf. martes), alpine ibex (Capra ibex), chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), aurochs or bison (Bos primigenius/Bison priscus), reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), red deer (Cervus elaphus), horse (Equus sp.), woolly rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis), hare (Lepus sp.), lemming (Dicrostonyx sp.), bank vole (Myodes sp.), jackdaw (Corvus monedula) and probably northern pintail (Anas aff. acuta). Animal osteological material from sectors 2, 3, 4 and R4 from the Under the Ladder test pit in Barová Cave is analysed in detail in this paper. Bears from the group of cave bears completely dominate, the total sum of bones determined as bear bones make up nearly 95% of all determined material. The cave lion bones comprise nearly 3% of the determined osteological material; bones of a wolf represent about 1.2%, bones of cave hyena approximately 0.5% and bones of ungulates approximately 0.2% of all determined material (Tab. 1). From the MNI point of view the bears from the cave bear group dominate too. Bear bones belonged to at least 40 individuals (70.2% of all minimally present individuals) of all age categories (Tabs 1, 2). The predominance of bones of bears from the cave bear group in Barová Cave shows that the cave was mainly used as a bear wintering site. The presence of bear cub bones proved that the cave also served females as a birthing place. Some bones of bears from the group of cave bears and several bones of cave lions, cave hyenas and wolves also show evidence of bite and gnawing marks by carnivores or scavengers (cave lions, cave hyenas, wolves and perhaps cave bears). This suggests that hibernating bears, and more often the cadavers or isolated bones of dead individuals sometimes served as a food source. The seasonality analysis indicates that the time of death varied most frequently near the end of wintering season (spring/summer). The large amount of bear bone material leads to the consideration that the bears from the cave bear group used Barová Cave over a period longer than thousand years.

Abstract The paper attempts to deconstruct the production of the myth associated with a street renovation project in Riga’s historical centre. During and after the reconstruction of Barona Street, it was widely used as a public image of street renovation failure. Professional and civil society blamed ad hoc planning, wrong traffic organisation, inappropriate design, and poor construction quality. It is this association of solely spatial aspects with the failure to create qualitative public space that constitutes the core of the Barona Street Myth of Failed design. The article postulates that interaction of social identity and social emotions underline communicative landscapes when significant public spaces are being transformed and induce mythologizing of urban projects. Built on the analysis of the related reflections and criticism in media and public discussions, the thick description of the Barona Street project’s events attempts to show how socially and emotionally shaped perception of design and implementation process by involved social groups has contributed to the mythologising the renovation of Barona Street. The conclusions emphasize socio-psychological framing of urban analysis. The emotional implication of the Barona Street myth induces reattribution of the responsibility for Failed Design to individual political leaders, designers, and involved municipal workers, shifting public attention away from structural and governance inability to engage with public spaces and creating preconditions for involving urban project as a tool in political power games.

Purpose – The case introduces the evolution and diversification of the Ceretto family business from the production and distribution of their own wines to the opening of two restaurants and the promotion of cultural and artistic projects. The case provides specific details about how strategic decisions were made. In particular, it shows how non-economic factors such as founders’ identity and personal relationships can shape the choice of new ventures and the formation of alliances. Since the second generation of the family joined the company, the case is useful to highlight the succession process in a family-owned company. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – Due to the exploratory nature of the study the authors adopted a qualitative approach. Information was collected through secondary data and semi-structured, face-to-face interviews with family members and the company's top management. The case explores from a theoretical and empirical point of view the entrepreneurial decision-making process and how it affects the evolution of the company strategy. Findings – The case illustrates the role of founders’ (organizational) identity and of social relationships in influencing the diversification of the company and its partnership strategy. Research limitations/implications – The research strategy does not allow generalizations. Originality/value – The case integrates strategic alliances literature highlighting the importance of the nature of the tie existing between companies before the alliance is set and of the decision makers’ identity in shaping partnerships’ choice. The case is useful in entrepreneurship and managing small or family business courses but also for students attending management of foods and beverage or cultural management courses.

W tym samym czasie ruch sarmacki rozwijał się w Polsce i na ziemiach słowackich, które znalazły sie w granicach cesarstwa Habsburgów. Sarmatyzm był związany ze szczególnym zainteresowaniem starożytnością w epoce baroku, z narodzinami slawizmu i panslawizmu, a także z początkami ruchu odrodzenia narodowego. Ponadto był używany jako historyczny argument na udowodnienie chwalebnej przeszłości Słowian, w szczególności Słowaków, przez obie grupy inteligencji okresu baroku na ziemiach słowackich: protestantów i katolików.

Methods: This study draws upon various sources of information, including financial data, regulatory information, industry reports, and published papers. Abstract The tidal swampland has the potential as a production source and a rice barn, but some obstacles are high acidity and toxic elements resulting in low rice yields. To increase productivity, adaptive and tolerant superior rice varieties are needed. This study aims to obtain adaptive and tolerant rice varieties in the tidal swampland, Sei Jangkit village in Central Kalimantan. The activity was carried out from September 2021 to April 2022. The varieties planted, namely, Inpara-2, Inpari-32, Inpari Nutrizinc, and Baroma. They covered an area of 4 ha and involved eight cooperative farmers. The technology applied in farming is tidal management, which includes water management, ameliorant applicant, balanced fertilization, and control of pests and diseases. The results showed that Inpara-2 gave the highest grain yield (5.12 t/ha), Inpari-32 gave 4.48 t/ha, Inpari Nutrizinc 4.58 t/ha, and Baroma 4.98 t/ha. Farming analysis using the B/C ratio of the varieties planted ranges from 1.28 – 1.57, with Inpara-2 giving the highest B/C ratio (1.57). The Baroma and Inpari-32 varieties are preferred over other types. These two varieties are close to the rice quality of the local variety based on farmers’ preferences.

Background: Sickle cell disease is a hereditary haematological disorder prevalent in tribal regions of India. Sickle cell disease can increase complications during pregnancy and in turn negatively influence pregnancy outcomes. This study reports the analysis of tribal maternal admissions in the tertiary centre S.S.G. Hospital, Baroda, Gujarat. Hence this study was conducted to assess complications in pregnancy and maternal and perinatal outcome among women with Sickle cell disease.Methods: It was a retrospective observational study including all pregnant women with sickle cell disease after 20 weeks of gestation who delivered at S.S.G. Hospital, Baroda from August 2019 to August 2020.Results: There were 43 antenatal women with Sickle cell disease during the study period. There was increased risk of obstetric complications like gestational hypertension (11.62%), preeclampsia (9.3%), eclampsia (6.97%), HELLP syndrome (4.65%), intrauterine growth retardation (23.25%), and oligohydramnios (11.62%). Medical complications observed were mainly anaemia (53.48%), vaso-occlusive crisis (18.16%), acute chest syndrome (4.65%) and infections like urinary tract infection (6.97%) and pneumonia (4.65%). The incidence of low birth weight babies (56.94%), low APGAR score (11.62%) and neonatal ICU admissions (23.25%) was high. 6.5% cases of maternal mortality and 4.65% cases of perinatal mortality was observed.Conclusions: Pregnancy in Sickle cell disease is associated with an increased maternal morbidity and high perinatal mortality due to obstetric and medical complications.

Of all fields of historical enquiry, Germany’s Third Reich is perhaps the richest in sources and historiography. Therefore, it is logical to assume that this is where we see history done at its best. The chief interest of this dissertation is how historians select their sources and how they use the evidence they find in their sources. I have taken relations between Jewish Germans and non-Jewish Germans as a case study because of the enormous quantity of primary source material and because so many historians have commented on the issue. I do not attempt to make any claims about what happened between Jewish Germans and their non-Jewish compatriots nor do I make a moral assessment of behaviours and attitudes among the ‘ordinary’ people of Germany under the Third Reich. Rather, this is a technical exercise to examine how well the historians have done history in this particular area. My systematic review of the historians’ methodologies reveals that many either distort the evidence they cite or put forward arguments that go well beyond what the evidence warrants, perhaps because of pre-conceived theories which shape their approaches to the evidence. Moreover, they fail to make the best possible use of some types of source such as personal narratives. In order to ascertain whether these sources can be better used, I systematically analyse a selection of personal narratives which are sometimes quoted by historians, in particular the 1933-1945 diaries of Victor Klemperer. My question is: Do these testimonies really say what the historians claim they say about relations between Jewish and non-Jewish Germans? And if not, how can we analyse them to determine what they actually do say? The two kinds of problems which emerge are how to select a balanced range of sources and how to use them properly. My argument is that there are six methodological principles that should underpin good historical practice. Because historians are not scrupulous to apply these common-sense rules, their arguments are methodologically flawed and they do not use some sources to the full extent of their value. This raises the question of whether these problems are confined to this particular field or whether they are endemic to the history profession as a whole.

The main goal of my work was find and define a form of content for potential reconstruction of the castle Rudolfov. The purpose was a make this castle a good place for serving to city. This thesis is a last from analyzes and proposals for dealing with the city Rudolfov and its public space, which I developed in the whole masters degree: City - Vision for the Future. My work has been divided into four semesters. In first one, i have made a detailed analysis of the city Rudolfov and identifying the problem areas and main city problems, which I also discussed. In the second semester the work was focused on new study for new city center. In the third semester, I continued working on urban development studies of the northern slope with relation to the newly created center. For the thesis I chose the troubled and valuable place of the city with a cultural monument that formerly served as barracks and today it is looking for a new use. All studies were designed to contribute positively to the future development of the town Rudolfov.

The study of early cross-linguistic diplomatic epistolography was first introduced in Brownlees' (2012) comparative study of Italian and English personal newsletters. Given the field’s young age and the strong need for both further research and the retrieving of new, untranscribed and unanalysed data, the present study set out to help move this field forward by examining, at both a textual superstructure and semantic macrostructural level, two sets of unchartered diplomatic newsletters which representatives at foreign courts despatched back to their respective home countries. The first set of original manuscripts comprises periodical newsletters which Baron Christer Bonde, the Swedish ambassador-extraordinary to England, wrote to Charles X, King of Sweden, between 1655-6, whereas the second set consists of letters sent in 1680 by John Robinson, England’s chargé d’affaires in Sweden, to Sir Leoline Jenkins, Secretary of State for the Northern Department of England. The analysis has shown that whereas the textual superstructures of the two diplomats’ correspondences remain similarly robust, the instantiating semantic macrostructures display not only stylistic and compositional, but also narrative, variation.

Craft beer has revolutionized the beer industry and market worldwide through diversification, innovation, authenticity, and tradition. As a result, these SMEs challenged the large breweries operating in a highly homogenized and consolidated market. Thus, addressing sustainability challenges in the growing craft beer sector is a strong recommendation. Therefore, this study has two main objectives. The first one is to understand how to improve sustainability in a Portuguese SME craft brewery named BARONA Brewing Company and implement sustainability practices into the business model. The second objective is more geared to operational level and practical improvements, looking to understand how this microbrewery can adapt to a transparent supply chain. A mixed methodology was used to provide value-added suggestions. Information about the current sustainability and supply chain activities and performance will be collected through direct field observation and semi-structured interviews. Results analysis showed that sustainability is not a focus for SMEs craft brewers. Even though it can be challenging to improve processes and measures to accomplish it, it is possible to include it in a business model by reducing resource consumption, minimizing waste, and focusing on efficient production. This will be cost-effective and make the company closer to a fully sustainable approach. However, when it comes to the supply chain transparency topic and the use of blockchain technology this is more challenging once it needs an investment of time and money, something some SME craft brewers may not be able to dispose of.
A cerveja artesanal tem revolucionado a indústria e o mercado mundial da cerveja, através da sua diversificação, inovação, autenticidade e tradição. Estas PMEs vieram desafiar as grandes cervejarias que operam num mercado altamente homogeneizado e consolidado. Assim, enfrentar os desafios da sustentabilidade no sector da cerveja artesanal é urgente. Este estudo tem dois objetivos. O primeiro é compreender como é possível melhorar a sustentabilidade numa PME portuguesa fabricante de cerveja artesanal chamada BARONA Brewing Company e implementar práticas de sustentabilidade no modelo de negócio. O segundo objetivo é orientado para o nível operacional, procurando compreender como é possível esta microcervejeira adaptar-se a uma cadeia de abastecimento transparente. Para fornecer sugestões com valor, foi escolhida uma metodologia mista. Serão recolhidas informações sobre as atividades de sustentabilidade e da cadeia de abastecimento, através da observação direta no terreno e de entrevistas semiestruturadas. Os resultados evidenciam que a sustentabilidade não é um foco para as cervejeiras artesanais. É um desafio melhorar os processos e as medidas de sustentabilidade, mas é possível incluí-la no modelo de negócio através da redução do consumo de recursos, minimização do desperdício e foco na produção eficiente. Assim será rentável e a empresa ficará mais próxima de uma abordagem totalmente sustentável. Quando se trata do tema de transparência da cadeia de abastecimento e da utilização de tecnologia de blockchain, isto é ainda mais desafiante uma vez que necessita de investimento de tempo e dinheiro, algo que algumas cervejeiras artesanais podem não ser capazes de disponibilizar.

Two concepts which have gained eminence as contributing to an individual's ability to deal effectively with life's stressors are: (1) Sense of coherence; and (2) Emotional intelligence. The aim of this study was to determine the possible relationship between sense of coherence and emotional intelligence. A once-off cross-sectional survey design was used. The sample population consisted of 54 South African marine officers serving in the merchant navy. The SOC-29 and the BarOn Emotional Intelligence Inventory (BarOn EQ-i) were used as measuring instruments. · Sense of coherence was positively related to emotional intelligence. The results showed that there is a correlation of large effect between total sense of coherence and total emotional intelligence (r = 0,73) in marine officers. The results also showed that there are correlations of large effect between the subscales of the SOC-29 and the BarOn EQi

This chapter traces a rhetorical history of the male computer geeks, engineers, and other high-tech types who came to epitomize autism in the late 1990s. It employs rhetorical analysis of key texts, including Simon Baron-Cohen's book The Essential Difference, a Wired magazine article titled “Silicon Valley Syndrome,” and a series of articles diagnosing Silicon Valley titans such as Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates as autistic by drawing on topoi of technology, geekdom, and cognitive capitalism, or the “knowledge economy.” As presented, gendered characters help make a cultural phenomenon seem livelier and more immediate to readers, often in ways that stereotype people—in this case, autistic people—in order to make a larger rhetorical point.

Abstract Hints on the Art and Science of Government was the first treatise on statecraft produced in modern India. It consists of lectures that Raja Sir T. Madhava Rao delivered in 1881 to Sayaji Rao Gaekwad III, the young Maharaja of Baroda. Universally considered the foremost Indian statesman of the nineteenth century, Madhava Rao served as Dewan (or prime minister) in the native states of Travancore, Indore and Baroda. Under his command, Travancore and Baroda came to be seen as "model states," whose progress demonstrated that Indians were capable of governing well. Rao's lectures summarise the fundamental principles underlying his unprecedented success. He explains how and why a Maharaja ought to marry the classical Indian ideal of raj dharma, which enjoins rulers to govern dutifully, with the modern English ideal of limited sovereignty. This makes Hints an exceptionally important text: it shows how, outside the confines of British India, Indians consciously and creatively sought to revise and adapt ideals in the interests of progress. This landmark edition contains both the newly rediscovered, original lecture manuscripts; and an authoritative introduction, outlining Rao's remarkable career, his complicated relationship with Sayaji Rao III, and the reasons why his lectures have been neglected-until now.

There are many good political, economic, and cultural reasons to care about who owns the institutions from which we get our journalism. Can any conclusions be drawn about which ownership conditions make for a great newspaper or a great TV news channel? Experience says that the goal should be to achieve the greatest diversity of institutional form possible.

This chapter describes how fear of radicalism defined the post-Great War Red Scare. Announcement on November 11, 1919, of an armistice ending the fighting in Europe had given Americans hope of a return to what future president Warren G. Harding would call normalcy, a renewed opportunity for the nation to enjoy its myriad benefits. Yet at least immediately this was not to be the case. Multiple manifestations of class-based dissent, in the form of strikes, protests, and horrific acts of violence, put the nation on edge. Much of the fervor focused on immigrants, as it had since the onset of industrialization, and Americans again turned their attention to the eradication of immigrant-engendered subversion. Ultimately, reaction to this Red Scare would set the stage for the implementation of new and more severe immigration policies.

This chapter details how the assassination of President William McKinley in 1901 reinforced the presumed connection between immigrants and class-based radicalism that had been building for the previous thirty-five years. Concurrent developments, above and beyond the president's murder, would insure continuation of the linkage. With the end of the 1890s depression, the new century's first decade saw the arrival of record numbers of immigrants, increasingly coming from southern and eastern Europe. Return of commercial prosperity cemented employers' need of their labor, but the continued reliance on foreign-born workers by businesses came amid intensified concerns about the foreigners' problematic behaviors. Over the next ten years, against a backdrop of economic growth coupled with virtually continuous labor conflict, these presumptions would bring heightened calls for immigration restriction, and would push business interests to intensify their efforts to control labor, notably in industries with predominately alien workforces.

This chapter examines how numerous companies sought the services of Asian immigrants. Efficiency, availability, and manageability, along with the fact that they would work for lower wages than white workers, made the Chinese an appealing source of labor to railroads and other businesses. Yet they remained desirable only so long as they met expectations of compliance and placidity. Employers would no more accept challenges to authority and prerogative from the Asians than they would from members of any other ethnic group. Although the Chinese escaped association with specific radical ideologies, such as anarchism or socialism, managers did not consider their assertions of agency to be any less subversive. Labor radicalism emanating from any source drew censure for being un-American. To some critics, Chinese immigrants lacked the wherewithal ever to become proper Americans. Their place of origin, sociocultural characteristics, and physical appearance engendered intense bigotry. Racially biased perceptions also came to justify animus on the part of other workers, who saw the Chinese as competitors whose low standards of living, greatly inferior to those of American laborers, enabled them to work for significantly lower wages. Enmity ultimately led to statutory discriminations.

This introductory chapter provides an overview of how industrialization and the class structure it engendered defined the United States into which millions of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century immigrants entered. During the sixty years between the end of the Civil War and the mid-1920s, big businesses replaced small, often family-owned concerns as the nation's primary producers of goods and providers of services. The antebellum milieu, with its putative promise of upward social mobility—at least for white males—gave way to one defined by readily visible and largely insurmountable socioeconomic stratification. People at the top, those who owned and operated big businesses, exercised the era's defining power and influence. For the working class, which included most of the era's immigrants, the consolidation of capital and the rise of large corporations effectively decreed a lifetime of wage-earning and determined the nature of labor. This book explores how the convergence of class and ethnicity influenced the course of American history during the decades of industrialization, showing how it engendered negative perceptions of immigrant workers, ultimately leading to their exclusion. It examines how and why the tumultuous events that fundamentally and dramatically changed the United States led to class conflict, and how and why Americans came to blame the associated unrest on an alien presence manifested in immigrants.

Abstract Strategy to process information: heuristic processing (intuitive, ‘rules-of-thumb’, unconscious, and system 1) and systematic processing (analytic, conscious, and system 2) (see Chaiken, 1980; Eagly and Chaiken, 1993; Payne and Bettman, 2004; Hammond, 2007; Acker, 2008). The latter requires the decision maker to exert a considerable amount of conscious effort in evaluating completely the details of the decision information; the former is a simpler strategy, requiring less cognitive effort, as the decision maker evaluates a part of the decision information that initiates a general, often subconscious, rule to guide the choice. Although heuristic processing tends to lead to satisfactory decisions being made most of the time, it is more likely to result in the wrong choice being made if a systematic strategy is employed (Chaiken, 1980; Baron, 1994; Payne and Bettman, 2004).

Abstract This work proposes a novel equation-oriented approach for the mean-line design optimization of axial-flow turbines, in which turbine constitutive equations and design specifications are included as constraints of the optimization problem. The problem is formulated as a MINLP (Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming), including either Soderberg or Traupel loss models. This model formulation allows the use of the gradient/Hessian information of both constraints and objective function, speeding-up the optimization process. Moreover, it allows using “Spatial Branch-and-Bound” optimization algorithms (e.g., BARON) which have guaranteed global optimality. After an exhaustive validation, the model is applied to the optimization of two case studies (air and sCO2 as working fluids), resulting in certified optimal solutions and computational time lower than the black-box approach.

This paper provides a historical overview of the emergence and establishment of a new defensive system during the first half of 20th century within the area of the City of Šibenik. Numerous field surveys, archival research and various new documentation made in recent years resulted in comprehensive analysis which details the construction phases of Šibenik bunkers, their typology based on the appearance and function, as well as their current condition.The construction of bunkers represents the first serious investment in city’s fortifications since The War of Crete (1645-1669), when the bastion-type fortresses of St. John and Barone were made. The first ideas about investment in new and modernization of the existing Šibenik fortifications came in mid-19th century, when Šibenik, along with Pula and Kotor, was considered one of the three main military ports of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. However, the actual realization and the construction of bunkers, the new fortification elements which defended the city, occurred in the Interwar period and during the Second World War. Numerous bunkers around Šibenik were built during the first Italian occupation (1918-1921), the Kingdom of SHS/Yugoslavia (1921-1941), during the second Italian occupation (1941-1943) and during the German occupation (1943-1944). After the end of the Second World War, the army of Socialist Yugoslavia built a series of military barracks, often using existing bunker infrastructure, making Šibenik one of the most heavily fortified cities in the region. Some of the bunkers were also used during Croatian War for Independence (1991-1995), especially during the attack on Šibenik in September 1991.

Abstract We examine optimal-profit product design platforming problems for products sold across multiple markets. Firms have an incentive to platform to take advantage of cost reductions that are possible with increased production quantity, such as learning-by-doing. However, platforming may decrease sales compared to if the designs were customized for each market. The problem can be represented as a Nash equilibrium between multiple competing firms, each with a nonconvex mixed-integer nonlinear programing (MINLP) problem for maximizing their individual profits. We derive the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions for the problem and compare results from two algorithmic approaches: (1) an iterative MINLP approach that uses the BARON algorithm to solve each firm’s design and platforming problem and iterates until convergence to an equilibrium, and (2) an approach that solves the KKT conditions directly holding platforming decisions fixed, and compares profits for these platforming decisions to find an equilibrium. Results are presented for a case study of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) where firms choose whether or not to platform the battery pack across the U.S. and China, and set the optimal battery capacity. We vary the learning rate and the difference in consumer willingness to pay for all-electric range between China and the U.S. Both algorithms agree on the same equilibrium solution in 98.4% of the cases. Results show that the optimum for each firm is to platform when learning rates are low, or the difference between optimal battery capacity in each market is relatively small.
