Body and self-perceptions of female ballet dancers (N = 38) were assessed in a repeated measures design experiment investigating the effects of dance attire. Participants were randomly assigned to complete a ballet class dressed in a black leotard with pink tights or dressed in their choice of loose-fitting clothing referred to by dancers as “junk.” The next day, participants completed a ballet class in the other clothing condition. After completing the ballet class each day, dancers completed surveys regarding self-perceived body image and performance level. Results revealed that participants reported significantly lower self- and body-perception ratings in the leotard with tights attire condition compared to the loose-fitting clothing condition. These results have implications for the effects of required dance attire on female dancer perceptions.

In the 1890s, Paris's three pre-eminent music halls – the Folies-Bergère, the Olympia, and the Casino de Paris – staged ballets on a nightly basis alongside circus acts and song-and-dance routines. As music-hall ballet librettos and scores show, these productions were closely related to ballets staged by the Paris Opéra, with similar large-scale structures, scene and dance types, and dramatic, choreographic, and musical conventions. What music-hall ballets looked like, however, is less clear: they have left few visual traces, and virtually no prose descriptions of choreography or staging. The one plentiful source of information is press reviews, but relying on reviews poses many problems for the historian. Critics’ various culturally situated viewpoints and interpretations may be used to create a composite picture of what might have been happening on stage, but they can also leave us with a hazy understanding of the genre. This paper examines the multiple and sometimes contradictory critical responses to 1890s music-hall ballets both to highlight what effect such contradictions might have on our perception of music-hall ballet (in particular as art or salacious spectacle) and to call attention to the problems inherent in using the press as a documentary source.

Masculine ballet as an example of a modern ballet art In the given article the queStion of masculine ballet art craft through the gender modification in brief text presentation is settled, and therefore analysis of the search of masculine character depiction of art direction is done. The analysis of ballet art works are done where the masculine part is inseparable part of big role of cognominal character. There were provided the inveStigation of the men of art – the actors – and their undefeated way to creating new ballet characters of woman’s prototype. Also the prominent Ukrainian ballet Stage figures are inveStigated who were contributing to the diapason of Ukrainian theater by their masculine part. The formulation of the article objectives: to inveStigate the regularities and Striving of the masculine hero on the European and Ukrainian Stages, to reach the aim of the enrichment by his uniqueness and generativity up to conStant criteria of self-knowledge and self-perfection through the perception of the audience analytics. To present the examples of Ukrainian ballet artiSts, their figurativе aspect and changes laid by them into the hiStorical qualifications of conStruction of the lines of the rising masculine notable personalities. Summaries. Ukrainian and European ballet space combines the gender intereSts of Structure of the interpretation and subStitution in characters of expression of that or another role. For years the Ukrainian dancers have been enriching the Ukrainian Stage, the ones whose unbelievable perception and transmission of artiStic bright energy color were fulfilling and indulging the theater Stage. Also in the rhythm of perception of modern performances there is a quite certain aspect for underStanding that gender safety “belts” concerning “the non-fitting” of the Feminine vs Masculine (and inStead) have no more importance of attention drawing from the side of theater critics. The norms of the confusion of certain paraphernalia in the coStumes, role staging and diversification in representing the individuality as a main hero in certain performance give the audience the opportunity to investigate the feminine and masculine characters in the Pleyada of modern performances and the way for avant-garde decisions.

Based on well-known and research materials about the creation, preparation, premiere and perception of The Magic Mirror ballet (choreography by M. Petipa, music by A. Koreshchenko, 1903), a culturalogical perspective of this phenomenon is proposed. This perspective is also applied to many components of the synthetic whole — music, scenography. As well as for the analysis of significant trends in changes in ballet toposes and their interpretations, ballet pantomime and its (as, in general, the classical ballet’ poetics) hypothetical impact onto silent movies.

Thus, the aim of this paper is to clarify the original compositional structure, maintenance and transformations that occurred this ballet by studying and analyzing the original sheet music provided by La Residencia de Estudiantes de Madrid. Furthermore, it seeks to highlight the creative components that, together with the dancer, created one of the first ballets with a plot that under the plastic, musical and dramatic arts under choreographic guidance in an ultimate art performance."

On some graphic regularities of perception in painting and dance: Mnemonic form of dance. The present article handles some problems of the mechanisms of visual perception in painting and classical ballet. It proceeds from the assumption that the interaction between those arts is based on the similarity of their formal languages. The main attention focuses on the questions of how and why does the classical ballet use the code of painting? The interaction between pictorial art and ballet occurs through the theatre, which is considered to be a picture coming alive in European tradition. This principle is taken here as a main method of analysis of ballet art and it is used in two ways. The first handles a problem of composition of a ballet as a theatrical performance. The second analyses the movement itself — the language of the choreography as such. The last part of the article contains the answer to the question — why does the ballet need such aspects of pictorial code as frontal composition of a picture coming alive, memory photo, multiplication of the similar images and repeating movements. Dance is dynamic, picture is stable. To represent a movement, the painting uses the rhythm and visual repeating of lines and contours. It helps to construct an illusion of motion and brings the temporal aspect into a static piece of art. Whereas different stops, poses and fixations in ballet help it to visualize the movement, to capture the space. This is one of the ways for ballet to leave its trace in space as much as in the memory of the spectators, to become fixed in space, to prevent the dispersion of dance in the thin air and to surmount in such a way the ephemera characteristic of it.

Following the method of interdisciplinary studies, this paper analyzes Pablo Picasso's relation to theater through his paintings, theater work, and the influence of theater not only on the themes of his paintings but also on the affirmation of the Avant-garde, the Cubist experiments and practices, the breakthrough of Cubist ideas across the medium of theater. The entire Picasso's art is presented in the light of several major artistic Avantgardes of which he was the founder and ideologist (the "father" of Cubism, inventor of Collage, the first Ready-mades and Constructivist sculptures, initiator of so-called Primitive Art, early Surrealism, etc.). However, it seems that the most significant field of his work, the "Cubist Revolution", has entered a new dimension through the presentation-performance-on the theater stage and in high culture circles. The influence of the stage and the early "Total Design" concept on his art and the perception of space/ object within Cubism and beyond are exceptional, as is the performative act and the presentation of his ideas through the language of the stage. In this case, one medium, by its nature the more communicative one (theater), takes the role of presenting the other, more hermetic one (fine art). That influenced, in multiple ways, the affirmation and acceptance of Pablo Picasso's art. Starting with the early fascination with characters such as Harlequin, Pierrot, circus horse riders, dancers, and jugglers, present in his paintings ("Blue Phase" 1901-1904, "Pink Phase" 1905-1907, and beyond), this paper focuses on his collaboration with Serge Diaghilev and the "Russian Ballet" ("Ballets Russes", 1917-1924), the elite troupe of Russian dancers who settled in Paris as the epicenter of modern art and started their productions there. Picasso was chosen to design the stage, the Cubist costumes, and the monumental theater curtains. Among other ballets, an outstanding piece, "Parade" by Erik Satie (1917), is seen today as a borderline performance, a turning point in ballet art, the start of its revolutionizing process towards contemporary ballet. By creating costumes resembling totems and the stage design based on Cubist division and perception of space, made from geometric shapes and particles ("facettes"), Picasso has taken the theater back to its primordial origins, its shamanic character. The paper elaborates on the relation of the ballet "Parade" with the ideas and theater theories of the theatrologist and sociologist Richard Schechner. Additionally, it addresses the question of a slow, postponed social reception and the (un)acceptance of Picasso's work and his comrades, a theme elaborated by the philosopher Jean-Francois Lyotard in the field of aesthetics and post-aesthetics.

When I was three years old, I was enrolled in my first ballet class. I loved the tights and tutus and pink, though a future in the ballet I did not have. I learned to plié and pas de bourrée, but, due to the dramatic nature of my untimely departure from the art form at the ripe age of nine, I developed a perception of myself as ungraceful. Not one for wallowing, I soon thereafter discovered my next and lasting passion: writing.

The purpose of the research is to analyze the specific features of the forms and techniques of ballet priyoms that are used as an integral part in the construction of tricks in the duet corde de péril of the circus genre of aerial gymnastics. The scientific novelty of the article consists in an attempt to comprehend the phenomenon of the unique use of similar priyoms both in ballet in a duet miniature and in aerial gymnastics of a duet corde de péril, which is a rather rare occurrence and representation of this circus genre in aerial gymnastics today. Plasticity, and expression are enriched with musical accompaniment and can be found at the intersection of two vectors − ballet and circus gymnastics, stunts in tricks. The technique of representation in the vertical plane (as opposed to horizontal in the ballet), demonstrates the new paradigm of perception synthesized genre.Key words: circus art, circus genres, aerial gymnastics, circus trick, corde de péril

Cette recherche formule l’hypothèse qu’il puisse y avoir des présences de transe au sein des représentations et des perceptions des ballets du XIXe siècle à aujourd’hui. De là, surgissent de nombreuses questions : comment la transe serait-elle représentée et perçue dans ces œuvres ? Qu’est-ce que ces représentations de transe ou au contraire son invisibilité dans ces ballets, disent de nous, Occidentaux ? Comment définir la transe, ce phénomène insaisissable et état aux multiples facettes ? Notre opération méthodologique consiste alors, non pas tant à définir la transe, que de dégager des dimensions et des traits transiques, soit des aspects récurrents relevés au sein d’un corpus ouvert de phénomènes de transes diversement repérés comme tels au fil de l’histoire occidentale du XVIe siècle à aujourd’hui. À la suite, cela nous permet de relever les traits et dimensions transiques au sein des ballets du XIXe à aujourd’hui, cela à travers des analyses d’œuvres et de discours à partir de sources diverses (livrets, textes, images, dessins, lithographies, tableaux, photographies, vidéos) et d’entretiens avec des danseurs. Ainsi, nous pouvons à la fois aborder le phénomène de transe dans toute sa complexité et décentrer nos regards sur les ballets. Nous découvrons un XIXe siècle foisonnant d’aspects transiques, alors que, de la fin du XXe siècle jusqu’à aujourd’hui, les éléments recouvrant et effaçant ces aspects semblent nombreux. Or, le fait de montrer ou au contraire d’effacer ces caractéristiques est porteur de discours sur ces danses, mais aussi de son public. Ce décentrement des regards permet également de possibles relectures « transiques » de ces ballets à l’heure contemporaineThis research formulates the hypothesis that there may be presence of trance in the representations and perceptions of ballets from the nineteenth century to the present day. This raises a number of questions: how is trance represented and perceived in these works? What do these representations of trance, or on the contrary its invisibility in these ballets, say about us as Westerners? How can we define trance, this elusive phenomenon and multifaceted state? Our methodological operation, then, consists not so much in defining trance, as in identifying, dimensions and features, i.e., recurring aspects found within an open corpus of trance phenomena variously identified as such throughout Western history from the sixteenth century to the present day. This then allows us to identify the transic features and dimensions of ballets from the nineteenth century to the present day, through analyses of works and discourses based on various sources such as librettos, texts, images, drawings, lithographs, paintings, photographs, videos and on interviews with dancers. In this way, we can both approach the phenomenon of trance in all its complexity and shift the way we look at ballets. We discover a nineteenth century teeming with trance aspects, whereas from the end of the twentieth century to the present day, there seems to be many elements that obscure and erase these aspects. The fact of showing or, on the contrary, erasing these characteristics conveys information about these dances, but also about their audience. This decentred perspectives also allows possible “transic” reinterpretation of these ballets in a contemporary context

The following study sought to explore transformative changes in self-esteem, self-perception of dance ability, and expressions of spirituality that may occur when adolescent girls not only participate in classical ballet classes, but also learn in a teaching model emphasizing compassion encouragement discipline technique. This study performed a pre and posttest using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), the dance subscale of Vispoel's Arts Self-Perception Inventory (ASPI), and MacDonald's short version of the Expressions of Spirituality Inventory (ESI) on 27 adolescent girls ages 14 through 19 randomly divided into 2 even groups, comparison and experimental, who participated in a 5-week classical ballet course. Both groups were taught by the researcher. The comparison group was taught in a traditional dance instructor style paying most attention to the execution of the participants' steps and dance combination performance rather than any internal changes. The experimental group received the researcher-developed Compassion Encouragement Discipline Technique. Results of the pre and posttests of each of the inventories were compared and analyzed via an analysis of variance and discussed to explore the efficacy of this pedagogical style. Quantitative results indicated no statistical significance on standardized assessments measuring their self-esteem, arts (dance) self-perception, or expressions of spirituality. However, researcher observed differences in the comparison and experimental group were noted and discussed. Because transpersonal psychology allows for emotional transformation, this study contributes to furthering transpersonal literature by acknowledging the potential impact of student/teacher rapport in the compassion and empowerment-based teaching of classical ballet to adolescent girls.

Cette contribution à l’étude des comportements moteurs humains relaie l’intérêt donné par le champ des mathématiques non-linéaires, la robotique, ou encore l’étude du couplage entre la perception et l’action chez l’humain à la tâche de rebond de balle. La dynamique déterministe d’un tel système est un support pertinent pour la description des mécanismes permettant l’efficience motrice. La mise en évidence de l’existence de solutions économiques, exploitables par l’humain, pour maintenir la stabilité du rebond est discutée comme l’action d’attracteurs comportementaux. A l’aide d’un environnement virtuel, les conséquences visuelles des comportements moteurs périodiques des participants ont été différées dans le temps. Ces incompatibilités étaient temporelles, mais aussi spatio-temporelles, et s’exprimaient en terme de phase relative. Nous avons ainsi sollicité de la part des participants des comportements moteurs d’exploration de solutions inédites pour la stabilité du rebond. L’efficience des comportements moteurs en présence de rétroactions retardées a servi la démonstration de la flexibilité cérébrale à un réarrangement sensoriel. Les comportements d’exploration lors de l’exposition à de tels attracteurs conduisent à l’émergence de solutions appropriées. De tels comportements exploratoires semblent être le fruit d’une navigation aléatoire dans l’espace des phases. Le rôle respectif des informations spatiales, au regard de l’altération temporelle, est mis en évidence dans la découverte des nouvelles solutions. Un accent méthodologique est conjointement donné au réalisme spatio-temporel du simulateur utiliséThis contribution to the study of the human motor behaviors extend the growing interest that has been focused on the ball-bouncing task, from the non-linear dynamics textbooks, to the dynamical coupling between perception and action in human, via juggling robotics. The deterministic dynamics of such system behave as an ideal support for a dynamical description of the mechanism leading to the motor efficiency. Evidences that an economic solution exist for the stability of ball bouncing which can be exploited by humans has provided an initial basis for the understanding of attractive states in behaviors. With a virtual environment, visual consequences of the participant’s periodic motor behavior were temporally delayed. These temporal incompatibilities induced also spatio-temporal alterations, which could then be formulated in relative phase. Exploring motor behavior of these new attractors were expected from participants before achieving regular bouncing. Appropriate behavior regarding to the task during exposure to delayed visual feedbacks in the perception-action loop underline cerebral flexibility to a sensory re-arrangement. Exploring behaviors during an exposure to such attractors leaded to the emergence of appropriate solutions. Such explorating responses apperead to be the result of a non-directed navigation in the phase space. The individual play of spatial informations compared to the temporal alteration was evidenced for the new solution discovery. The spatio-temporal realism of the virtual environment was analyzed and measured during its conception. This work was described in a methodological issue

This research investigated injuries across and within a training year and career phases in ballet and contemporary dance. The perceptions of artistic and health professionals regarding training practices were also explored. In tertiary dance, 50% of students were injured in the first seven weeks of the program, and certain weeks across the program resulted in higher injury rates. Across one semester, spikes in stress leading to performances, and spikes in load and injury to recommence technique training were observed. Artistic staff were perceived to be responsible for planning training, providing insights for future research into injury prevention in dance.

L’objectif de ce travail était d’identifier certains des déterminants perceptivo-cognitfs et/ou perceptivo-moteurs de l’expertise dans les sports de balle dans des environnements virtuels. Des joueurs de tennis et de basket avec différents niveaux d’expertise ont été testés au cours d’une première partie expérimentale comportant deux études de jugements perceptivo-cognitifs et une étude de poursuite visuo-manuelle. Les résultats n’ont pas montré de différence liée à l’expertise dans les tâches de jugements perceptivo-cognitifs, mais seulement dans la tâche de poursuite visuo-manuelle. Ce résultat questionne sur le rôle des représentations (ou des modèles internes) dans le développement de l’expertise et met en avant l’importance des régulations perceptivo-motrices pour discriminer l’expertise. Sur la base de ces résultats et afin d’explorer davantage l’expertise dans le registre perceptivo-moteur, une seconde partie expérimentale comportant trois expérimentations a été réalisée en utilisant des tâches de poursuite visuo-manuelle. Les résultats révèlent des capacités d’adaptation et de régulation du mouvement supérieures des experts particulièrement dans les situations où les trajectoires sont peu prévisibles. Les résultats obtenus au cours de cette thèse permettent en définitive de mettre en évidence que les tâches de poursuite visuo-manuelle aussi schématiques soient-elles, sont discriminantes de l’expertise en sport de balle. Ils soulignent des perspectives de développement des environnements virtuels pour tester et entraîner les experts dans le registre perceptivo-moteurThe aim of this thesis is to identify the perceptual-cognitive and perceptual-motor determinants of expertise in ball sports in virtual environments. Tennis and basketball players with different levels of expertise were tested. To this purpose, the first experimental part contained two perceptual judgment studies and a visuomotor tracking study. Results did not show any difference between experts and non-experts in perceptual judgment tasks, but only in the visuomotor tracking task. Results raise some questions about the role of representations (or internal models) in the development of expertise. Results highlight the importance of perceptual-motor regulations to discriminate expertise. In order to explore more deeply the perceptual-motor process of expertise, a second experimental part involving three experiments was performed using visuomotor tracking tasks. Results reveal higher adaptation and regulation abilities of experts, particularly in the most constraint periods of tracking. This finding highlights that the visuomotor tracking tasks can discriminate expertise in ball sports. Humans are a musical species and every culture has its music. However, twenty individuals out of a cohort of twenty-nine participants in this study judged themselves to be 'not musical'. Through their words, silences and responses, the story of music in the lives of these self-perceived non-musicians uncovered a musical world where concepts of performance, judgment and talent dominate. My investigation into individuals' perceptions of their musicality revealed a pervasive societal belief that individuals were either born 'musical' or they were not; their everyday reality was one where music was perceived as a performance, an object, something that only talented people can 'do'. I planned conversations with participants that aimed to reveal clues that could help to unravel a paradox that lies within music in our Western culture: every young human is intrinsically musical but only some are born with a gift to be musical. Participant convictions that they were not musical deterred some individuals from active engagement in music making. They felt as if they had been left out of the 'musical ballpark'. Details from conversations illustrated a constricting cultural imposition on individuals; this was perpetuated in many schools and also in private music teaching. Data revealed that current educational practice contributed to a denial of a natural birthright and alienated some individuals from being part of a musical community. As their stories revealed failed attempts to engage in music making, iterative contacts created a daunting quantity of data. But there was poetry in participant data. These self-perceived non-musicians simultaneously demonstrated their musicality in the rhythms of their narrative as they denied that they were musical; this emerged as a means to report the research whereby participants' words combined to tell a non-musician's tale. Compelling narrative revealed a society where educational practice does little to address individual musical development. While each story alone was specific and complex, once the stories became woven together as a complex and contradictory whole, the ballad of the never picked captured the essence of a distanced musicality in our Western society. Narrative drove towards meaning. Through interpretation and detailed qualitative analysis, understandings began to emerge from depths of experience and from friction existing within contradictions. Deep within narrative which evolved over a period of five years were perceptions that led to understandings of our cultural reality. Active involvement in this research became part of an emancipatory process for several participants where mutually reflective acts exposed unnecessary impositions from societal expectations. Participant voices uncover a bifurcated reality wherein the musical development of many individuals is undermined through an ignorance of holistic human potential; this musical-unmusical divide is perpetuated in educational practice.

Seulement, dans certaines situations, une interférence apparaît entre les participants, donnant lieu à une coopération inefficace voire délétère. Or, très peu d’études se sont intéressées à ce phénomène, pourtant fréquemment rencontré, par exemple dans les sports collectifs. Ce travail a pour objectif l’analyse de cette interférence, via la construction et l’utilisation de situations collaboratives en réalité virtuelle, lors d’une tâche d’interception de balle. En l’absence de communication verbale, deux individus devaient décider tacitement lequel interceptait la balle, etlequel s’effaçait pour laisser le partenaire réaliser l’interception.Au travers de deux études complémentaires, nous avons étudié l’impact des conditions de la tâche sur la coopération et l’interférence entre les participants, lors d’interceptions réalisées face-à-face ou côte-à-côte. Nos résultats suggèrent tout d’abord que la coordination d'équipe émerge de l'interaction directe entre les participants durant l’essai. De plus, nousavons observé que si la division de l’espace d’interception est globalement bien définie, il existe cependant une “zone d’incertitude” où de nombreux essais sont manqués, traduisant la difficulté des participants à mettre en place des patterns d’interception efficace dans cette zone. However, in some cases, interference between participants occurs, resulting in inefficient or evendeleterious cooperation. However, very few studies have looked at this phenomenon, although it is a common situation, frequently encountered for example in the collective sports. This work aims at analyzing this interference,through the construction and use of collaborative situations in virtual reality, during a ball interception task. In the absence of any verbal communication, two participants had to tacitly decide who would perform the interceptive action, and who would not.Through the design of two complementary studies, we studied the impact of the conditions on the cooperation and the interference between the participants, during interceptions performed face-to-face or side-by-side. Our results suggest that team coordination emerges from direct interaction between participants during the trial. Moreover, we observed that although the division of the interception space is globally well defined, there is however an "area of uncertainty" where many trials are missed, showing participants’ difficulty in identifiying efficient patterns of interception in this area. Then, the interference that appeared between them depends on the task complexity (uncertainty on the action of the partner, visual informationavailable, mode of interception)

This dissertation addresses the different perceptions of lawlessness held by the magnate and gentry classes in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. These attitudes are analysed in relation to the coalescence of the Honour of Leicester within the Earldom of Lancaster, the acceleration of the retaining phenomenon, changes in the legal system and the accompanying rise in recorded crime.;Crime figures obtained from selected gaol delivery rolls, the Calendars of the Close and Patent Rolls, alongside evidence from the surviving eyre and assize rolls, demonstrate a rise in lawlessness between 1260 and 1360. The reasons for this increase, its perception by the population, and its portrayal in the ballads and political songs are the major themes of this thesis.;The anarchy that followed the death of Simon de Montfort, the development of the Earldom of Lancaster, the abandonment of the eyre, continuing wars, purveyance, disease, taxation, the rise of professionalism, and the practice of retaining all encouraged crime. The attitude that violence and extortion were not only acceptable, but were a means of political and social elevation is repeated in both the legal documents and literature of the day. Felons of the age, such as the Folvilles and Beltofts, are mirrored in the tales of Robin Hood, Gamelyn and Adam Bell.;Lawlessness had become an acceptable means of self-advancement for the gentry and magnate classes. Families competed for retaining alliances that brought power, influence and control of the local area; corruption was bound to follow, and consequently lawlessness. Contemporary poets could confidently place the outlaw as the hero against the tyranny of the crown, and the injustice of the law.

L’objectif de cette thèse est à la fois d’identifier les couplages information-mouvement impliqués dans la régulation d’une coordination visio-manuelle rythmique (tâche de frappe cyclique de balle) et également leur développement entre 5 et 12 ans. Dans un premier temps l’étude 1 a montré que la période de raquette (Tr) est couplée à la durée de la phase ascendante de la trajectoire de balle (tup) et que la variation de vitesse de raquette à l’impact (Δvr) est quant à elle couplée à l’erreur de rebond de balle à la cible (ε). Dans un second temps, les études 2 et 3 ont montré que de 5 à 7 ans les enfants montrent une très faible capacité de régulation cycle-à-cycle et adoptent un comportement moteur stéréotypé caractérisé par unehaute fréquence d’oscillation de raquette. Entre 7 et 12 ans le premier couplage information mouvement qui émerge est celui entre Tr à la hauteur de rebond de balle (hp) tandis que Δvrn’ai pas encore régulée. C’est à partir de l’âge de 11-12 ans que les premiers passages d’un couplage de Tr d’une information visuelle spatiale (hp) à l’information visuelle temporelle référence sont observés. L’évolution avec l’âge de la nature des couplages information mouvement impliqués dans la régulation de la tâche notamment au niveau des informations impliquées est en accord avec la séquence développementale du Freezing-Freeing-Exploiting(Savelsbergh & Van der Kamp ; 2000, 2003). Enfin, l’étude 4 a permis de montrer que leenfants âgés de 9 à 12 ans adoptaient un comportement oculaire similaire de fixation du regard au niveau de la cibleThis thesis aims to both identify the information-movement couplings involved in the regulation of rhythmical hand-eye coordination (ball-bouncing task) and their development in children aged from 5 to 12 years old. Study 1 showed that racket period (Tr) is coupled to the duration of the ascending phase of the ball trajectory (tup) while the variation of racket velocity at impact (Δvr) is coupled to bounce error (ε). Studies 2 and 3 showed both poorcycle-to-cycle regulation ability and stereotyped behavior (characterized by a high racket frequency) in children aged from 5 to 7. From 7 to 12, results showed the emergence of the first information-movement coupling between Tr and the ball peak height while Δvr still remains not regulated. Since the age of 11-12, the first shifts from space- (hp) to time-relatedinformation (tup) in the control of Tr are observed. Developmental dynamics related to thenature of informaiton-movement couplings and the source of information involved is in accordance with the Freezing-Freeing-Exploiting developmental sequence proposed by (Savelsbergh & Van der Kamp ; 2000, 2003). Finally, study 4 showed that both children from9 to 12 and adults fixated their gaze at a location closed the target height while performing the task

The study aimed to examine whether an experimental imagery intervention, which elicited ecological
representations of self, was more effective in enhancing vividness of movement imagery, action
control and performance ability than a conventional imagery intervention and/or that of a standard,
instruction intervention. In order to test this hypothesis, a sample of 36 young ballet dancers
(11-13 years) were secured from five reputable ballet schools and randomly assigned to three groups
(n = 12) for the purposes of conducting a true experiment: a standard control group, an imagery
control group and an experimental imagery group.
Descriptive statistics and frequencies were conducted for all instruments used to describe and
represent single variables of interest. Parametric and nonparametric statistical procedures were used
to determine whether significant differences existed between the three groups for measures of
vividness of movement imagery, action control and performance ability. Additional emerging
relationships and trends were explored through bivariate correlational analyses, multiple stepwise
regression procedures, a factor analysis as well as MANOVA and ANOVA statistical procedures.
The results of the study were varied and some interesting trends were observed. Contrary to what
was expected, the results revealed significant differences across the three groups for mean difference
scores of performance ability, in favour of the standard control group. In particular, the standard
control group revealed positive benefits in performance ability while the imagery control and
experimental imagery groups revealed deteriorations in performance ability. The experimental
imagery group was found to be significantly different from the imagery control group for mean
difference measures of internal vividness ofmovement imagery. However, the study failed to reveal
significant variations in mean difference scores for action control across the three groups.
Furthermore, the results indicated that external and internal vividness of movement imagery were
found to be significantly correlated with performance ability for the entire sample (N = 36) and across
the two imagery groups (N = 24) respectively. Finally, numerous significant and near-significant
relationships were observed between measures of vividness of movement imagery, action control and
performance ability.
The results were discussed in relation to the literature on mental imagery, ecological self, action

Regendered movement refers to a process where choreographic material is created or adapted with the intention that it may be performed by either male or female dancers with little or no change to the original steps. This practice-led research project investigated the choreographer’s creative process for regendering contemporary ballet choreography and the dancers’ experiences of the rehearsal process and performance, and audience perception of meaning in the ballets. The research project sought to investigate the “in-born” and “natural” gender binaries of classical ballet by applying gender theory (Butler 1990, 2004; Polhemus 1993; Wulff 2008) and feminist critique of classical ballet (Daly 1987; Copeland 1993; Anderson 1997; Banes 1998). A mixed method, studio-based action research methodology was employed. Recent critical debate on gender in dance (Macaulay 2010, 2013; Jennings 2013, 2014), existing contemporary ballet, and its impact on the creative process of the choreographer are discussed.

‘Pandora […] evoked affairs of our country’ wrote Roberto Gerhard (1896–1970) about his ballet Pandora (1943–50). But how does Pandora evoke Gerhard’s perception of the political situation in Spain? This chapter examines the way Gerhard articulates political discourse in Pandora that reflects the Spanish Civil War and its outcomes for Catalans by using thematic material drawn from Spanish and Catalan popular songs. It considers how Gerhard handles this material to show that his music brings out an alternative narrative that is superimposed on the one presented in the storyline conceived by the ballet’s choreographer, Kurt Jooss (1901–79). After the cuts made by Jooss while the ballet was on tour, Gerhard reworked Pandora’s musical material to derive a five-movement orchestral Suite version (1950) that was independent of the ballet. The overall structure of the ballet is nevertheless retained, and the broad strokes of the storyline can still be seen in the 1950 Suite. In fact, this ultimate Suite by which the composer hoped to re-establish his message highlights his own reading of Jooss’s storyline that referred to the Spanish political situation of the 1930s and 1940s.

Chapter 6 examines the ways in which pre-strike ballot requirements provide bargaining leverage to unions and, to a lesser extent, employers. The chapter’s analysis of internal union processes and bargaining dynamics suggests that the pre-strike ballot process can provide unions with some benefits, or advantages, in the enterprise bargaining process. First, the process of seeking permission to run a ballot, and the conduct of a subsequent ballot, can increase leverage by escalating the ‘threat’ of industrial action without necessarily having to take the approved action. Second, the pre-strike ballot process can benefit unions by providing an opportunity to engage existing members in the bargaining campaign, and/or recruit new members. There can, however, be adverse consequences for unions—an unsuccessful ballot outcome can severely compromise the union’s credibility; provide evidence of a weak bargaining position; significantly reduce the likelihood of industrial action occurring; favour the employer in the negotiating process; delay the taking of industrial action; or even entirely derail the union campaign. In order to maximize the strategic ‘benefit’ of a pre-strike ballot, unions generally need to invest considerable time and resources to ensure that enough members vote, and vote favourably, in the ballot. Some employers use these processes to their advantage—by, for example, using the time between the application to conduct a pre-strike ballot and the actual ballot actively to try to discourage support for industrial action; trying to disrupt the momentum of the union’s campaign; or exploiting opportunities to oppose applications for pre-strike ballots.

This concluding chapter considers how Australian pre-strike ballot requirements reflect the explicit (furthering industrial democracy) and implicit (inhibiting strike action) objectives that underpinned their introduction. After summarizing the practical operation and impact of the statutory requirements, the chapter describes stakeholder perceptions of the system in practice and in principle, and their views as to how it should be reformed. In conclusion, the chapter suggests the removal of the requirement under the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth) for a union to apply to an industrial tribunal for permission to run a ballot. It advocates the replacement of the current complex model with a requirement that union rules contain provision for a ballot of members as a pre-condition of taking strike action, with the lawfulness of any subsequent strike being conditional upon being approved in such a ballot and subject to challenge only by the members of that union. So far as union members are concerned, this would do little more than accord formal recognition to the non-legislated democratic processes that are already the norm in Australian unions, but it would at least provide a basis for meaningful, democratic decision-making in relation to taking strike action. As such it would constitute a welcome repudiation of what the chapter describes as the hypocritical posturing that underpins current legislation in Australia (and the United Kingdom) which uses the rhetoric of democracy to deprive workers of their democratic right to take strike action to protect and to promote their legitimate social and economic interests.

Abstract The stimulus induced in plant cells by the fungal metabolite fusicoccin (FC) is perceived by specific receptors at the plasma membrane. They are responsible for coupling the primary signal to the ultimate physiological target, the H+-ATPase (Aducci et al. 1988). Evidence has been produced showing that this enzyme can be activated in vitro and in vivo by FC (Ballio et al. 1981; Rasi-Caldogno et al. 1986; Blum et al. 1988a), whereas it is insensitive to the toxin once solubilized from the plasma membrane (Blum et al. 1988a) or when re constituted into liposomes in the absence of FC receptors (Aducci et al. 1988).

The 1966 midterm elections heralded a more tightly contested partisan era in American politics. Following Lyndon B. Johnson’s landslide win up and down the ballot in 1964, the Republicans made significant gains two years later. Scholars have been too enthusiastic in declaring this comeback as being built on the ascendence of a newly aggressive Republican conservatism, which campaigned forcefully against Johnson’s Great Society. In reality, Republicans said little about popular programmes, such as Medicare. Rather they focused their ire specifically on Johnson’s War on Poverty, which was now perceived as solely benefiting racial minorities - a disadvantageous perception in the midst of ‘white backlash’ politics. The Republican strategy was embodied in the campaigning of Richard M. Nixon, who would replicate this approach in his successful 1968 presidential campaign.

Adolescence is a critical period that is heightened for dancers, whether participating recreationally or vocationally. Changes are situated within a highly complex setting and are influenced by many factors, including the dance training environment, personal feelings about changes, and perceptions of changes by significant others. The way in which sub-cultures (such as ballet) construct adolescence is likely to impact upon experiences of, and engagement in, dance, as well as development. The dance context, however, has received little attention in relation to development and maturation from a psychosocial perspective. While the facets of talent that predict engagement or dropout of young dancers have been discussed, little research within dance has viewed the adolescent from a truly developmental perspective. This chapter will explore how contemporary cultural constructions of adolescence apply to the dance context, outline the developmental ‘tasks' of adolescence, and discuss how young dancers navigate these tasks, drawing on psychosocial perspectives.

The chapter underscores the powerful emotional ambiguity that characterises the final moments of As You Like It and Twelfth Night. This alteration introduces a new understanding of melancholy that revolves around ideas of mood, time and setting. No longer tied to physical characterisations but grounded instead in the languor elicited by the inevitable passage of time, melancholy impresses itself into the very fabric of the plays it occupies. It finds particular resonance within the various musical interludes they contain, as well as in the several allusions to the bittersweet temporal perception that characters express. In both plays, the sense of a comic ending is seriously problematised by the growing sense of wistfulness that develops. Despite the promise of a return to court, the multiple loose ends in As You Like It undercut the otherwise joyful resolution. Similarly, a strong sense of this more spectral melancholy, embodied in Feste’s closing ballad, sweeps through the final act, coating it in a wistful longing for times past. The powerful emotional ambiguity of these final moments underscores the symbiotic revisions of melancholy and comedy into a melancomic theatrical and philosophical affect.

The article is devoted to the comparative analysis of the works of Albert Camus of the 1940s–1950s and the legacy of Oscar Wilde. First of all, we are talking about comparing Wilde’s play “Vera; or, The Nihilists” and Camus’s play “The Just Assassins” from the point of view of typological similarities in the construction of a drama-tragedy about terrorists and from the point of view of reflections on the nature and expediency of rebellion, terror, murder and self-sacrifice in the context of socio-historical development of society. The hypothesis is expressed about the possibility of direct reception of the play “Vera; or, The Nihilists” against the background of the French writer’s interest in Wilde’s legacy, as well as his indirect perception through the prism of André Gide’s work. As one of the indirect confirmations, Camus’s drafts and diaries are given, which reflect the plans of his future works (never written) and contain references to Wilde. The identification of the multifaceted influence of the English writer (not so much as an aesthete, but as an author of works on socio-political topics) and references to his works written in prison (“De profundis” and “The Ballad of Reading Goal”) allows us to supplement scientific ideas about the sources and problems of Camus’ late work.

As a methodological strategy, a systematic literature review was carried outwith an analysis of periodicals published in Portuguese, between the years 2012 to 2020,usingtheacademicgoogle,scielo,bvs,andPubMeddatabases.Ourstudywascarriedoutbetween February and November 2020. In this sense, we understand that dance enablesthedevelopmentofthestudent'sattention,perception,reasoning,memoryandimagination,contributingtocognitivedevelopmentatatimewhenitisnecessarytorelatemovements to rhythms, asit is precisely at this stage that experiences and experienceshappen. that will be recorded for the rest of your life, even if you are not initially awareof it. The results showed that dance is a valuable tool in cognitive development, as thestudent isled to think, understand and solve problems when performing the specificmovementsofthisdancepractice.Ourworkisofimportantnecessityduetothefactthatthere are still few studies that deal specifically with the practice of classical ballet andcognitive development, thus becoming one more research document necessary for futurestudies. We conclude that dance contributes to the cognitive development of students asanalternativepracticethroughitsrhythms,steps,exercises,choreographicsequencesandcreativity.

BalletFitnessisaphysicalactivitythatincludesclassicballetmovementsassociatedwithaerobic training, which may have gained in muscle hypertrophy. This work aims tounderstandthecontributionofBalletFitness,itsinfluence,andbenefitsforthequalityoflife of its practitioner, in the physical, social and mental aspects. As a methodologicalstrategy, we used a systematic literature review, as well as the analysis of works suchasarticles, dissertations, theses, and course completion papers researched through the term"Ballet Fitness" in Portuguese, between the years 2016 to 2021, in the database: GoogleAcademic, Scielo and BVS. Among the results obtained, it was found that Ballet Fitnesscanbeused topromotethe qualityoflifeofits practitioners,asit isanactivitythathas adirect relationship to personal achievement, through exercises typical of a classic balletclass associated with exercises practiced in gyms. It was possible to conclude that in thephysical aspects, Ballet Fitness provides a significant difference in the results of arm,chest,hipcircumference,increaseddisposition,bodydefinition,weightloss,improvementinphysicalconditioningandendurance,increasedflexibility,improvementin mobility, the enhancement of physical fitness and strength of the lower limbs. In thesocial aspects, the creation of bonds of friendship between the practitioners of BalletFitness was found, and the reason for making people more confident, not only in theclassroomenvironmentbutinsocietyingeneral. Inthementalaspects,itwaspossibletoobserve personal satisfaction through the realization of a dream, which is the practice ofballet through physical activity,reduction in the level of stress, pleasure in the practice,feeling of accomplishment, and, mainly, improvement in self-esteem. And in terms ofquality of life, it was possible to positively observe the perception of individuals abouttheirpositioninthepracticeofBalletFitness,withinthecontextofthecultureandvaluessystems in which it is inserted and in relation to its goals, expectations, standards, andconcerns.

Abstract The Vehicle Perception Safety Research Team of the Ford Manufacturing & Vehicle Design Research Laboratory has developed artifacts, procedures and data analysis techniques to assist in evaluating systems used for the high-speed collection of geometric data. These systems are usually comprised of a non-contact sensor and a means of positioning the sensor relative to the part being inspected. They are usually used to collect data from sculptured or “free form” surfaces for reverse engineering or for applications in the emerging field of free form metrology. The evaluation procedure consists of acquiring data from three ceramic balls nominally 44.45 mm in diameter held by depressions in a flat plate. The data are then first analyzed using least square techniques to obtain observed radii of the balls and the location of their centers. Then free form metrology techniques are used to compare the data from each ball to an ideal sphere of the observed radius and center location. By combining the observed location and radii with a high resolution graphical representation of the quality of fit between the data and an ideal sphere, a good assessment of the system’s capability for collection of data for reverse engineering or for free form metrology is obtained. At the same time the technique graphically reveals any troublesome systematic or shape-related sources of error.

Abstract Among human sensations, tactile perception has an important role in physics and in living comfortably. It is already known that surface roughness greatly affects the feel of solid objects, but the mechanics of the relationship between feeling and physics, as well as their effects, are difficult to determine. This study, aims to clarify the numerical relationship between elastic tactile perception and surface roughness of a rigid body by designing various products with surfaces comfortable to touch. The finite element method (FEM) has been adopted for this clarification, and a numerical model of human skin with 3 layers, epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous, has been developed to discuss the mechanical effects of touch movement. This skin model is used to evaluate the distribution of skin deformations during the process of touch movement, and the analysis of the tactile perception is done by discussing the distribution change due to touching objects. The change in distribution of deformation is mainly discussed in terms of pressure under the epidermis, and various patterns of distribution are inspected by changing the diameters and pitch ratio of a uniformly spread ball used as a plain surface. By comparing the relationship between distributions of rigid and elastic surfaces, similar distributions of pressure in the skin model were observed, and the relationships of the distribution are summarized to solve the mechanics of touch feeling. In this summarization, the maximum pressure and the maximum gradient of pressure distribution are adopted as parameters for the analysis. The analysis shows that it is numerically possible to represent the elasticity recalled by the rigid surface from its relationship with the elastic surface when they have the same maximum pressure and maximum inclination of pressure. The importance of maximum inclination of pressure for touch feeling is also shown here.

The term sweet spot is used for tennis racket in describing that point or region where the ball should be hit for optimal results. From a vibration standpoint, the sweet spot is determined by the location of the nodal lines across the racket head. In this paper, several methodologies based on modal analysis techniques are explored in order to estimate such a sweet spot for a beach tennis racket. Particular attention was addressed in the detection of the optimal boundary conditions to which the beach tennis racket should be constrained. It is the first time this item is dynamically characterized by experimental techniques. Test results are presented and the sweet spot related to minimal vibration perception is identified for a beach tennis racket. A further experimental study is also carried out in order to identify the Maximum Coefficient of Restitution in beach tennis rackets; this coefficient is related to racket efficiency and characterized by a minimum absorption of the ball incident kinetic energy by the racket. This study could be useful for design, development and practical use of beach tennis rackets.

An anomaly detection and failure mode classification method has been developed for electronic assemblies with multiple failure modes. The presented prognostic health management method targets the pre-failure space of the electronic assembly life to trigger repair or replacement of impending failures. Presently, health monitoring systems focus on reactive diagnostic detection of failure modes. Examples of diagnostic detection include the built in self test and on-board diagnostics. In this paper, damage pre-cursors from time-spectral measurements of the electronic assemblies has been measured under applied vibration and shock stimulus. The time-evolution of spectral content of the damage pre-cursors has been studied using joint time frequency analysis in a full-field manner on the printed circuit assembly. Frequency moments have been used to build a feature vector. Evolution of the feature vector with damage initiation and progression has been studied under shock and vibration. The feature vector from multiple locations in the board assemblies has been mapped into a de-correlated feature space using Sammon’s mapping. Several chip-scale packages have been studied, with SAC305 and SAC405 leadfree second-level interconnects. Transient strain has been measured during the drop-event using digital image correlation and high-speed cameras operating at 100,000 fps. Continuity has been monitored simultaneously for failure identification. In addition, explicit finite element models have been developed and various kinds of failure modes have been simulated such as solder ball cracking, trace fracture, package falloff and solder ball failure. The neural net has been trained using simulated data-sets created from error-seeded models with specific failure modes. The neural net has then been used to identify and classify the failure modes in board assemblies experimentally. Supervised learning of multilayer neural net in conjunction with parity has been used to identify the hard-separation boundaries between failure mode clusters in the de-correlated feature space. The assemblies have been cross-sectioned to verify the identified failure modes. Cross-sections indicate that the experimentally measured failures modes correlate well with the position of the cluster in the de-correlated feature space.

The influence of early use of technological innovation in learning and independence/dependence of children is focused on positive and negative impact in teaching and developing of their independence. We analyzed the responses obtained from 200 parents from 5 primary schools and three preschools in the city of Novi Sad, Serbia. With the method of focus groups, it was analyzed impact of early use of technological innovations adjusted to children, their autonomy in performing everyday schools and after-school activities. Analyzes shows that the perception of the real picture of the situation of independence can be obtained very quickly after the first use of technological innovation. Regardless of the developmental age of the children, recognizes the distinct coordination of small hand movements, the motivation to win, a high level of concentration and focus of attention. Severe progressiveness, in terms of education, reflected to the children in higher grades possessing advanced knowledge in relation to their peers, which is in direct correlation with the early use of of technological innovation in independent study. On the other hand, looks at the "lack" of motivation for mastering the skills important to reflect the independence of children to a certain age, such as binding of shoelaces, wear, loosening the cap, using a pencil, ball handling, storage bags for the school, editing workspace, purchase and etc. Based on these results it is concluded that there is so-called "conflict of interest among parents" when it comes to the use of of technological innovation of children in early calendar age period, because it borders on the traditional system of values that do not follow the interests and needs of children. On the other hand, parents perceived advantages associated with technological innovation, and are directly related to: independence, self-confidence and self-creation of time.

Abstract This work addresses the fundamental need for continued improvement in human-machine interfaces. Of particular interest is the need for force feedback to the operator to provide the ability to interact physically with the synthetic environment. In order to allow for natural contact and control over the position, orientation, and motions of objects within the computer-generated environment, a new haptic interface device is under development that applies arbitrary forces to the digits of the human hand. This work describes the design and development of the hardware prototype of a robot manipulator intended to provide a force interface between a human operator and a computer-based dynamic model. The basis of the new device is in the coupling of the robot and human through the interaction of an electric current and a magnetic field. The device positions a strong magnetic field near wire coils mounted on the fingers, and forces are generated by electrical current moving within the magnetic field. The device consists of a mechanical exoskelton manipulator that maintains a constant position relative to the finger digits by means of an optical feedback tracking system. The kinematic linkage design of the exoskelton haptic interface device has been developed to maintain constant relative position of magnetic fields around the coils as each finger flexes through its range of motion. The relative position error is measured using a light source attached to the finger and a photo sensor mounted on the manipulator. The position of the exoskelton is controlled by correcting for the error between the center of the coil and the center of the magnetic yoke. The absolute position of the fingers is determined using the manipulator joint angles and the forward kinematic equations. The finger position is used as an input to the computer model, which generates appropriate interaction forces based on the inputs and the simulation parameters. The current prototype tracks one digit of the hand using two degrees of freedom, and can apply two independent virtual forces along the finger. The robot exoskelton is controlled by a digital computer, which combines sensor measurements with model simulation results to generate both trajectory and force commands. In this paper, the design and analysis of the mechanical exoskelton device and the development of a closed loop control algorithm to track the hand motion are discussed. A dynamic model of ISU exoskelton is developed and experimental results for the system are presented using some typical virtual environments, including interaction with a “hard” surface, a simple mass-spring-damper “yo-yo”, and interaction with a compliant “ball”. These results show that the electro-magnetic interface generates adequate force levels for perception of virtual objects by the exoskelton.

The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under five key headings: Building blocks: The ultimate aim should be to build rich, detailed and testable narratives situated within a European context, and addressing phenomena from the longue durée to the short-term over international to local scales. Chronological control is essential to this and effective dating strategies are required to enable generation-level analysis. The ‘serendipity factor’ of archaeological work must be enhanced by recognising and getting the most out of information-rich sites as they appear. o There is a pressing need to revisit the archives of excavated sites to extract more information from existing resources, notably through dating programmes targeted at regional sequences – the Western Isles Atlantic roundhouse sequence is an obvious target. o Many areas still lack anything beyond the baldest of settlement sequences, with little understanding of the relations between key site types. There is a need to get at least basic sequences from many more areas, either from sustained regional programmes or targeted sampling exercises. o Much of the methodologically innovative work and new insights have come from long-running research excavations. Such large-scale research projects are an important element in developing new approaches to the Iron Age. Daily life and practice: There remains great potential to improve the understanding of people’s lives in the Iron Age through fresh approaches to, and integration of, existing and newly-excavated data. o House use. Rigorous analysis and innovative approaches, including experimental archaeology, should be employed to get the most out of the understanding of daily life through the strengths of the Scottish record, such as deposits within buildings, organic preservation and waterlogging. o Material culture. Artefact studies have the potential to be far more integral to understandings of Iron Age societies, both from the rich assemblages of the Atlantic area and less-rich lowland finds. Key areas of concern are basic studies of material groups (including the function of everyday items such as stone and bone tools, and the nature of craft processes – iron, copper alloy, bone/antler and shale offer particularly good evidence). Other key topics are: the role of ‘art’ and other forms of decoration and comparative approaches to assemblages to obtain synthetic views of the uses of material culture. o Field to feast. Subsistence practices are a core area of research essential to understanding past society, but different strands of evidence need to be more fully integrated, with a ‘field to feast’ approach, from production to consumption. The working of agricultural systems is poorly understood, from agricultural processes to cooking practices and cuisine: integrated work between different specialisms would assist greatly. There is a need for conceptual as well as practical perspectives – e.g. how were wild resources conceived? o Ritual practice. There has been valuable work in identifying depositional practices, such as deposition of animals or querns, which are thought to relate to house-based ritual practices, but there is great potential for further pattern-spotting, synthesis and interpretation. Iron Age Scotland: ScARF Panel Report v Landscapes and regions: Concepts of ‘region’ or ‘province’, and how they changed over time, need to be critically explored, because they are contentious, poorly defined and highly variable. What did Iron Age people see as their geographical horizons, and how did this change? Attempts to understand the Iron Age landscape require improved, integrated survey methodologies, as existing approaches are inevitably partial. Aspects of the landscape’s physical form and cover should be investigated more fully, in terms of vegetation (known only in outline over most of the country) and sea level change in key areas such as the firths of Moray and Forth. Landscapes beyond settlement merit further work, e.g. the use of the landscape for deposition of objects or people, and what this tells us of contemporary perceptions and beliefs. Concepts of inherited landscapes (how Iron Age communities saw and used this longlived land) and socal resilience to issues such as climate change should be explored more fully. Reconstructing Iron Age societies. The changing structure of society over space and time in this period remains poorly understood. Researchers should interrogate the data for better and more explicitly-expressed understandings of social structures and relations between people. The wider context: Researchers need to engage with the big questions of change on a European level (and beyond). Relationships with neighbouring areas (e.g. England, Ireland) and analogies from other areas (e.g. Scandinavia and the Low Countries) can help inform Scottish studies. Key big topics are: o The nature and effect of the introduction of iron. o The social processes lying behind evidence for movement and contact. o Parallels and differences in social processes and developments. o The changing nature of houses and households over this period, including the role of ‘substantial houses’, from crannogs to brochs, the development and role of complex architecture, and the shift away from roundhouses. o The chronology, nature and meaning of hillforts and other enclosed settlements. o Relationships with the Roman world
