AbstractThe paper presents a proof of concept method of background rejection based on convolutional neural networks (CNN). The method was tested on simulated data and achieved very high accuracy (100%). What is more, method based on CNN is very fast and could be easily applied to wide field surveys. Since early stage results suggest method is very accurate and robust, it could be helpful in creating very low-latency pipelines for EM Follow-up purposes, which will be needed in LIGO-Virgo O3 EM Follow-up.

We discuss the properties of signal strength and integrated intensity in two-photon excitation confocal microscopy and image scanning microscopy. The resolution, optical sectioning and background rejection are all improved over nonconfocal two-photon microscopy. Replacing the pinhole of confocal two-photon microscopy with a detector array increases the peak intensity of the point spread function. The outer pixels of a detector array give signals from defocused regions, and thus the processing of these, such as through subtraction, can further improve optical sectioning and background rejection.

Background: Over the last few years, there are two major problems identified during organ transplantation such as surgical restrictions and transplant rejections. Few of these obstacles have been partially removed such as the use of immunosuppressant improved it consistently while decreasing graft rejection up to 12.2%. Methods: This study was conducted from 2019-2021. In all patients renal function was examined through glomerular filtration rate. Induction therapy was given to all the transplant recipients. Induction therapy with basiliximab 20mg intravenously on 0 and 4 days. After transplantation tacrolimus and MMF was given with varied concentration dose. Acute rejections were found in patients who had no biopsy or biopsy-proven rejection. In the end, clinical pathologists had analyzed all biopsies again and recipients who were experienced the vascular Banff grade 2 and tubule interstitial rejection. Results: Immunosuppressant tacrolimus treated patients were 71(67.61%) and mycophenolate mofetil used in 34(32.38%). Total 39(37.14%) rejections were received and 66(62.85%) acceptance was recorded. Two types of rejection were highlighted namely cell-mediated rejection 25(23.80%) and 14(13.33%) chronic antibody-mediated rejection. The effect of tacrolimus on follicular helper T cells and follicular regulatory T cells shows the clear difference between the kidney transplant and healthy control cells. Reduction in numbers of follicular regulatory T cells was measured in patients. Conclusion: eventually we find tacrolimus significantly affects the number of follicular regulatory T-cells and follicular helper T cells. Alemtuzumab substantially lowers the follicular regulatory T-cells. Mycophenolate mofetil showed non-significant on T-cells. Investigations have been made on the minimisation of the background count rate detected in proportional counters, while maximising the signal detection efficiency. Two methods of background rejection have been developed, based on the time profile of the shaped detector pulses and on the lateral extent of the induced charge distribution on the cathode. Both these systems have proved highly efficient, and the former has been applied to a multiwire proportional chamber designed as a monitor for plutonium lung contamination, an application where high efficiency detection is critical. This instrument, which incorporates full six-sided "massless" guard cells, and utilises real-time data acquisition and handling by microcomputer, has been developed, optimised, and assessed as a possible competitor to the phoswich detectors in use at present and the solid state detectors under development. Results indicate that the counter is likely to offer no more than a marginal improvement in sensitivity, insufficient to justify its increased compexity and higher costs.

The Polarized Gamma-ray Observer (PoGOLite) is a balloon-borne instrument capable of measuring as low as 10% polarization from a 200 mCrab source in a sixhour °ight. A wide array of sources can be studied, including pulsars, neutron stars, accretion discs and jets from active galactic nuclei. The two new observational parameters provided by such measurements, polarization angle and degree, will allow these objects to be studied in a completely new way, providing information both about the emission mechanisms and the geometries of the emitting objects. The instrument measures anisotropies in azimuthal scattering angles of gammarays with a close-packed array of 217 well-type phoswich detector cells (PDCs) by coincident detection of Compton scattering and photoelectric absorption. Each PDC comprises a \slow" plastic scintillator tube, a \fast" plastic scintillator rod and a BGO crystal. The fast scintillator is the main detector component, whereas the slow scintillator and the BGO crystal act as an active collimator and a bottom anticoincidence shield, respectively. The three parts are viewed by a single photomultiplier tube (PMT) and pulse shape discrimination is used to identify signals from each part.

The detector array is surrounded by a 54-segment side anticoincidence shield (SAS) made of BGO crystals. Each segment is 60 cm long and consists of three crystals. A total of 187 crystals have been procured and tested for light yield, energy resolution, dimensions and surface ¯nish. All crystals have been found to be of excellent quality and measured characteristics have been within speci¯ed limits. The performance of the instrument has also been evaluated in several beam tests with polarized synchrotron photons irradiating a prototype detector array. Front-end electronics have been tested and a modulation in the observed scattering angles has been observed in line with expectations. Geant4-based Monte Carlo simulations of the instrument performance have shown that a 10 cm thick polyethylene shield is required around the detector array in order to su±ciently reduce the background from atmospheric neutrons. To validate these simulations, a simple detector array with four plastic scintillators and three BGO crystals was irradiated with 14 MeV neutrons. The array was shielded with polyethylene, mimicking the PoGOLite instrument design. Measured results could be accurately recreated in Geant4 simulations, demonstrating that the treatment of neutron interaction processes in Geant4 is reliable.

The SNO+ experiment will use a liquid scintillator based detector to study solar, geo, and reactor neutrinos and double beta decay. This thesis discusses the effect of backgrounds on the measurement of neutrinoless double beta decay and describes analysis techniques developed to reduce their impact. Details of the modeling of the photomultiplier tubes in the SNO+ Monte Carlo RAT are first described and comparisons are made with the SNO Monte Carlo SNOMAN. SNOMAN has been extensively verified with calibration sources and RAT is shown to be in good agreement. The event reconstruction techniques are then presented and predict an achievable 15cm position and 7% energy resolution. The backgrounds are discussed and pileup backgrounds identified, including many previous unknown pileup backgrounds. Techniques to reject the pileup background are presented and shown to give over 99% rejection in the region of the double beta decay end point (3-4MeV), below the irreducible background from solar neutrinos. Finally the resulting limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass SNO+ could achieve in 2015 is predicted to be 270meV and this is compared with other experiments that are underway.

La recherche de la désintégration double bêta sans émission de neutrino (0ν2β) est un enjeu majeur de la physique contemporaine car son observation démontrerait que le neutrino est une particule de Majorana. La demi-vie du processus étant reliée à la masse effective de Majorana mββ, cela fournirait aussi une mesure de l'échelle de masse du neutrino et une information sur la hiérarchie de masse. L'expérience de prochaine génération CUPID vise à atteindre une sensibilité suffisamment grande pour explorer complètement l'espace des valeurs pour mββ dans le cas de la hiérarchie inversée de masse. Elle utilisera pour cela des bolomètres scintillants constitués d'un cristal de Li₂MoO₄ (LMO), contenant du ¹⁰⁰Mo comme isotope candidat à la 2β, couplé à un détecteur de lumière bolométrique en Ge. Grâce à la méthode de double mesure lumière/chaleur, CUPID va pouvoir rejeter le bruit de fond dû aux particules α qui est la principale source limitant la sensibilité de CUORE, sa prédécesseur, et vise à obtenir un bruit de fond de 10⁻⁴ coups/kg/keV/an (ckky) dans sa région d'intérêt (ROI). Si après CUPID la 0ν2β nous échappe toujours, il faudra pousser la réduction du bruit de fond à un niveau encore meilleur pour maintenant explorer le spectre des valeurs pour mββ possibles seulement dans le cas de la hiérarchie normale de masse. C'est dans ce contexte que s'inscrivent BINGO (Bi-Isotope 0ν2β Next Generation Observatory) et les travaux de cette thèse. Ce projet vise à tester des méthodes innovantes pour atteindre un bruit de fond de 10⁻⁵ ckky dans la ROI du ¹⁰⁰Mo mais aussi du ¹³⁰Te respectivement dans des cristaux de LMO et de TeO₂. Tout d'abord, un assemblage innovant des bolomètres réduisant la quantité de matériel passif autour des détecteurs a été développé et validé. Un test cryogénique d'un module prototype du veto contenant deux BGO est aussi reporté dans cette thèse. Finalement, pour utiliser les cristaux de TeO₂ comme bolomètres scintillant, il est nécessaire de booster les performances des détecteurs de lumière. The search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0ν2β) is a major challenge in contemporary physics, as its observation would demonstrate that the neutrino is a Majorana particle. The half-life of the process being related to the effective Majorana mass mββ, it would also provide a measure of the neutrino mass scale and information on its mass hierarchy. The next-generation experiment CUPID aims to reach a sensitivity high enough to explore completely the region of possible values for mββ in the case of the inverted hierarchy. It will use scintillating bolometers made of a Li₂MoO₄ (LMO) crystal, containing ¹⁰⁰Mo as the 2β candidate isotope, coupled to a Ge bolometric light detector. Thanks to the dual light/heat readout, CUPID will be able to reject the background due to α particles, which is the main source limiting the sensitivity of CUORE, its predecessor, and aims to achieve a background level of 10⁻⁴ counts/kg/keV/year (ckky) in the region of interest (ROI). However, if the 0ν2β still eludes us after CUPID, we will have to push the background reduction even further to explore the spectrum of values for mββ possible in the case of the normal mass hierarchy. It is in this context that BINGO (Bi-Isotope 0ν2β Next Generation Observatory) and the work of this thesis lay. This project aims to test innovative methods for achieving a background of 10⁻⁵ ckky in the ROI of ¹⁰⁰Mo but also of ¹³⁰Te, respectively embedded in LMO and TeO₂ crystals. Firstly, an innovative assembly of bolometers reducing the amount of passive material around the detectors has been developed and validated. Secondly, R&D on implementing a cryogenic active veto composed of scintillators around the volume containing the bolometers was done to reject external γ events by coincidence. A study of potential candidates led to the selection of the BGO for the material. A cryogenic test of a prototype veto module containing two BGOs is also reported in this thesis. Other light collection measurements have also been done at room temperature. Finally, to use TeO₂ crystals as scintillating bolometers, it is necessary to boost the performance of the light detectors. To achieve this goal, BINGO will operate light detectors using the Neganov-Trofimov-Luke (NTL) effect to amplify the signal. An R&D campaign has been conducted to test a new method for depositing aluminum electrodes and different electrode geometries

SNO+ is a liquid scintillator experiment designed to study a wide range of neutrino-related physics goals, such as solar neutrinos, reactor and geo-neutrinos, and neutrinoless double beta decay. The success of the experiment depends in part on the ability to accurately characterise the detector's optical properties, and also develop effective methods to suppress contributions from unwanted backgrounds. This thesis presents one of the central calibration systems which will be used to make measurements of the detector's optical scattering properties. The hardware and its integration into the wider detector will be discussed. A simplifed analysis of simulated water data is also presented, in order to show that the scattering properties can be accurately measured. The reconstruction of photons' scattering position, length and angles can be achieved to a high degree of accuracy, with a small reconstruction bias and resolution in comparison to the scale of the detector itself. This thesis also presents a study into the rejection of two important radioactive backgrounds that will be encountered during the scintillator phases of SNO+: the (212Bi + 212Po) and (214Bi + 214Po) beta-alpha chains, where both components of each chain occur within a single detector trigger window, creating what is known as a BiPo pileup event. Two methods have been considered: one using a comparison between the cumulative time residual distributions of BiPo pileup and double-beta signal events, and the other using a log-likelihood difference method. Both methods perform extremely well, with the first being capable of rejecting > 95% of BiPo pileup events for a 1% loss of signal, and the second rejecting > 97% of backgrounds for the same signal loss.

The measurement of the theta-13 mixing angle, to which the Double Chooz experiment contributed, paves the way to future findings in neutrino physics. In this manuscript, we describe the characterization of some Double Chooz backgrounds. Cosmic muons that stop and decay in the detector are characterized by anisotropic emission of the scintillation light, causing the vertex to be poorly reconstructed. The resulting pulse shape distortion can be used to tag and remove such background. Fast spallation neutrons producing multiple recoil protons may produce a similar distortion in the pulse shape and can also be tagged. Pulse shapes are also used to identify the formation of ortho-positronium. The tagging of such electron-positron bound state is made possible by the induced distortion in the pulse shape due to the delay in the positron annihilation, and can be used for an electron-positron separation

The IRA: The Irish Republican Army begins by examining the historical background to the development of the IRA, the group's basic ideology, and its aims and objectives. The second part of the book concentrates on the IRA—specifically the Provisional IRA—as a contemporary phenomenon, explaining its organization, how it operates, who joins the IRA, and why. The book explores how the IRA was formed from a Romantic reaction against modernity, and is an expression of a vehement rejection of the liberal, individualist, and scientific values of the Enlightenment. The IRA's attachment to violence almost as an end in itself, its conflation of Catholicism with Irish-ness, its rejection of big-business for peasant-proprietor economics, and its disregard for individual rights in pursuit of group rights is explained in terms of the groups' scholastic Catholicism foundation. This contribution analyzes the 1967 hostilities that began when Israel attacked Egyptian forces in the Sinai Peninsula. It sets out the relations between Israel on the one hand and Egypt, Jordan, and Syria on the other that provided the background for the hostilities. It recounts actions by Egypt that provided the immediate context for the hostilities. It examines Israel’s claim made in the United Nations Security Council that Egypt opened the hostilities, and Egypt’s rejection of that claim. It examines the reaction of the international community when the hostilities were assessed first in the Security Council and then in a special session of the General Assembly. These hostilities have been widely taken as having involved anticipatory self-defense on Israel’s part, and as a precedent justifying anticipatory, or preventive, military action. This contribution examines the extent to which that analysis is warranted.

This chapter reconstructs the intellectual-historical background to Carl Schmitt’s well-known analysis of the problem of dictatorship and the powers of the Reichspräsident under the Weimar Constitution. The analysis focuses both on Schmitt’s wartime propaganda work, concerning a distinction between the state of siege and dictatorship, as well as on his more general analysis of modern German liberalism. It demonstrates why Schmitt attempted to produce a critical history of the history of modern political thought with the concept of dictatorship at its heart and how he came to distinguish between commissarial and sovereign forms of dictatorship to attack liberalism and liberal democracy. The chapter also focuses on the conceptual reworking of the relationship between legitimacy and dictatorship that Schmitt produced by interweaving the political thought of the Abbé Sieyès and the French Revolution into his basic rejection of contemporary liberal and socialist forms of politics.

AbstractIn this chapter, we will review the evolution of Japan’s peacekeeping policy from the immediate aftermath of Japan’s defeat in 1945 to the enactment of the Peacekeeping Operations (PKO) Act in 1992. In the first section, we will look at the historical background during the postwar period (in this book, the term “postwar” denotes the period in Japan from its defeat in World War II in 1945 to the end of the Cold War in around 1990), including the rise of anti-militarism, the hidden rearmament, the establishment of the de facto ban on overseas military dispatch, the rejection of the UN’s request for the Self-Defense Forces’ (SDF’s) deployment to a United Nations Peacekeeping Operation (UNPKO) and the aborted plan to dispatch a minesweeper to the Persian Gulf. This section will also examine the Government of Japan’s legal standpoint about the possibility of SDF deployment to a UNPKO. In the second section, we will clarify how the Gulf Crisis/War in 1990–1991 made Japan abandon the taboo against overseas military dispatch. Then, we will review the course of the challenging lawmaking process of the PKO Act, which was finally passed in June 1992. Lastly, we will see the restrictions inserted into the PKO Act, such as the so-called Five Principles.

In Chapter 2, ‘Pretensions to Permanency: Thorvaldsen’s Bust and Statue of Byron’ (1995), Robert Beevers focuses on Lord Byron’s connection with the world of art, particularly with the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. The chapter explores the background to John Cam Hobhouse’s commissioning of Byron’s bust, revealing Hobhouse’s personal attachment and anticipation of a potential separation from Byron. The choice of Thorvaldsen, a prominent Neo-Classical sculptor, is discussed in the context of Hobhouse’s enthusiasm for classical antiquity. Byron’s relationship with the fine arts is explored, acknowledging his occasional indifference to but deep appreciation of painting and sculpture. AbstractAbduction in description logics finds extensions of a knowledge base to make it entail an observation. As such, it can be used to explain why the observation does not follow, to repair incomplete knowledge bases, and to provide possible explanations for unexpected observations. We consider TBox abduction in the lightweight description logic $$\mathcal {EL}$$ EL , where the observation is a concept inclusion and the background knowledge is a TBox, i.e., a set of concept inclusions. To avoid useless answers, such problems usually come with further restrictions on the solution space and/or minimality criteria that help sort the chaff from the grain. We argue that existing minimality notions are insufficient, and introduce connection minimality. This criterion follows Occam’s razor by rejecting hypotheses that use concept inclusions unrelated to the problem at hand. We show how to compute a special class of connection-minimal hypotheses in a sound and complete way. Our technique is based on a translation to first-order logic, and constructs hypotheses based on prime implicates. We evaluate a prototype implementation of our approach on ontologies from the medical domain.

AbstractThis chapter focuses on the legal activism that followed the Ali Enterprises factory fire and its aftermath in Pakistan. This chapter has two purposes: firstly, it documents the legal proceedings that were initiated and pursued in the courts of Pakistan as well as its interconnected developments. Secondly, I aim to use this engagement with the legal proceedings of the Baldia factory fire aftermath as an opportunity for an in-depth reflection on the capacity and, finally, suitability of the judicial process to bring about justice in struggles over human and labour rights. Providing a rare and insider account of the legal proceedings in the Pakistani courts and its interconnected developments, I hope to lay the empirical foundation for the theoretical and strategic claims of this study. It is against the background and based on the experience with the litigation and legal advocacy following the Baldia fire that I examine the two what I perceive as “paradoxes” at the heart of the litigation. The first is the inseparability of the “limited justice” that may result from such litigation on one hand, and the “structural injustice” that informs and determines the conditions the litigation seeks to address—and transform—on the other hand. The second paradox concerns the inseparability of both law and lawlessness as regards the legal context of the litigation, advocacy and policy proposal elements that are here in play.My argument is that these apparently contradictory phenomena not only coexist alongside one another but that they guarantee each other’s existence. This analysis leads me to the conclusion that in order to understand and improve such forms of strategic litigation, it is necessary to measure its success and failure in terms of three distinct but interconnected criteria. These are the tactical, strategic and structural impacts of the litigation. Ultimately, I will argue for rejecting what is often perceived by involved stakeholders to be an unavoidable choice between nihilism, euphoria or incremental reform in this context. But, to the contrary, I will argue for a conception of legal struggles as a means of building sustainable and fruitful forms of resistance and of change based on the recognition and exploitation of these irreconcilable paradoxes rather than fruitless attempts to ignore or transcend these irreconcilable contradictions.

The scientific research considers and analyzes the epistolary heritage of Olena Teliha. Excerpts from her correspondence are presented, which testify to the formation of a brilliant woman, a creative personality who played an extremely important role in the struggle for the formation of Ukrainian statehood. It is from the letters that we learn that for her letters are almost an ideal way of communication. The epistolary heritage of Olena Teliha allows us to reveal the vision of the main processes in her personal life against the background of the general historical discourse. In addition, the main communicative visions that determine her creative personality are highlighted: communicative vision of friendship, love, creation of literary talent, perseverance and strength, resistance to rejection. Attention is focused on the importance of studying and researching the epistolary heritage of creative personalities in the context of social communications. From the quoted letters, which are distinguished by their sincerity and accuracy of expression, it is possible to determine and formulate what positions and ideas the civic activist, poet and publicist adhered to. In addition, we can see the line of consistency in the formation of a creative personality who not only lives and writes, but acts – creates history, its moment, the value of which is felt and understood by future generations. It is found that the life path in its interconnection with historical circumstances and social environment influenced the formation of the creative personality of the genius poet and publicist. The peculiarities of the epistolary of Olena Teliha are determined by the circumstances, people and personalities that she had to face in life. The promising areas of research are the letters of Olena Teliha, which are in the archives of other countries and the allocation of journalistic and documentary aspects of her epistolary heritage.
