Francesco Demuro is a 43-year-old accomplished opera singer from Sardinia. In the present days his career as a tenor singer takes him to famous concert halls all over the world. He took his first steps in the world of singing, however, not as an opera singer, but as a folk singer in the Sardinian tradition of a chiterra song. He debuted as a mini-cantadore (‘little singer’) on the stages of the local festivals and TVs in Sardinia and, ever since, has come to be known amongst the enthusiasts of a chiterra song with the diminutive of Franceschino, ‘little Francesco’. After having reached the most prominent position in this Sardinian traditional style, Demuro started studying as an opera singer. Later he abandoned his career as a folk singer to pursue opera singing once and for all, while always proudly declaring his origins as a singer of Sardinian traditional music. In this paper, some aspects mastered by Demuro with regard to the different vocal styles – as a singer of Sardinian music and as an opera singer – will be examined through both a detailed analysis of his vocal style in the two genres over the years and by gathering Demuro’s personal memoirs and accounts of his evolution as a professional singer.

This thesis theorises a disengagement framework to disengage French individuals engaged with the militant salafi-jihadi movement and criticises the French government’s response to this growing phenomenon. To make sense of disengagement, engagement must first be made sense of. Engagement is examined through Social Movement Theory, especially via incentives, frames, networks, and the repertoire of action. Specifically, this thesis makes sense of why and how French individuals engage with the pan-Islamist movement through the Salafi-quietist and Tabligh movements. Then, it makes sense of French individuals engagement with the militant salafi-jihadi movement, namely, via a focus on the Algerian Groupe Islamique Arm´e, al-Qaeda, and Daesh. The pan-Islamist movement is seen as the phenomenon’s inception: a movement proselytising individuals to turn againstWestern society. While the pan-Islamist movement is non-violent, the militant salafi-jihadi movement is a violent sub-movement. The French government has only responded, since the 1980s, by force towards the militant salafi-jihadi movement but has not responded to the pan-Islamist movement. In fact, some politicians have been reticent to prevent, even criticise, the pan-Islamist movement’s spread. With the phenomenon’s evolution, especially the Syrian jihad, the French government’s hard counter-terrorism approach is inadequately adapted. It has created a soft approach in 2014. Yet, it follows the controversial notion of mental manipulation that neither counter-acts the pan-Islamist movement nor the militant salafi-jihadi movement. Via the examination of engagement, this thesis can both critically analyse the French hard and soft approaches and uncover lessons for disengagement in the hopes of establishing a disengagement framework. That is, a soft social approach. This is not a social approach through job creation and improvement of socioeconomics. Rather, this is a framework wherein individuals are given the chance to belong and participate into society. That is, they are engaged into the French Social Contract. If needed, disengagement programmes can be included. Overall, this thesis aims at a policy recommendation for the creation of a nationwide disengagement framework and an adaptation of France’s counter-terrorism strategy.

This thesis examines the role of trust in the global expansion and activities of Chinabank over the past eight, and especially the past two, decades and the associated transformative effects of this emergent geography. Three specific moments of change involving questions of trust are investigated: i) attempts to project the Bank as a legitimate presence in the City of London; ii) the reconciliation of expatriate and local practices of work in the Bank in London; and iii) the transformation of relations of governance within the Bank and between the Bank and its headquarters and the Chinese State in Beijing. The underlying argument of the thesis is that global economic geographies are enabled, in part at least, through social geographies - here social geographies of trust - which are a prerequisite in bridging the differences involved in the processes and relations of globalisation. But, of course, concepts and practices of trust are themselves geographically variable and so globalisation in turn involves negotiations over, and transformations of, trust. Thus the thesis argues that trust is relationally constructed as different conceptualisations and practices of trust interact with, and shape, each other. In this sense, globalisation is a process of hybridisation rather than of flattening. The main contributions of the thesis are i) to explore globalisation from ‘periphery’ to ‘core’; ii) to consider some of the implications of bringing together two very different sets of political economic relations (communist state and market-based capitalist financial relations); and iii) by exploring the nature and significance of trust as a socio-spatial relation, to contribute to the literature on the social conditions of existence (the social geographies) of economic globalisation. In addition, the thesis draws attention to the impact of different orientations/attitudes towards personal trust and regulatory trust in forming financial relations and their complementary role in 3 the making of financial space. Thus the research explores the implications of the working practices of the Bank in London not only for relations between it and its headquarters and the Chinese state in Beijing but for working practices in London in coming to terms with the rapid growth and globalisation of finance in China. Qualitative methods predominate but findings are triangulated across a range of data. Methods employed include semi-structured interviews (within the Bank in London; in its head office and the offices of its supervisory authorities and other state bodies, in Beijing; and with UK clients of the Bank and other leading financial institutions in London); participant observation and textual analyses; and the analysis of published data from a variety of sources.

What happens when a classroom becomes more than just a site of intellectual growth and evolves into a locus of emotional, social, and spiritual transformation? What happens when a student in such a classroom also occupies the role of teacher and desires to reproduce such a transformative environment for his students? In brief, this thesis answers these questions by offering a narrative and critique of my personal "conscientization" via feminism and elucidates the theory behind, my approaches toward, and the results of my bringing graduate-level feminist theory and pedagogy to a middle school English classroom. I examine how my experiences as a student in both the past and the present have merged to shape my work as a teacher and have set me on the path to becoming a professor, not only in the sense of a college teacher as a profession but as a person who professes, who openly declares the truths of my past as both dehumanizer and dehumanized to help others come to critical consciousness. First, I autobiographically critique my learning and assimilation of The Iliad and The Odyssey in middle school, reflecting upon how these works occupied a major part of my indoctrination into the hyper-masculine, white, patriarchal, upper-class dogma of the culture, as well as bringing a feminist perspective to bear upon these personally influential epics. Next, I examine my studies in the University of South Florida's master's program in English literature and, in particular, my direct and life-changing encounter with feminism in a 2009 course in feminist theory, which facilitated a complete re-visioning of my life and led to a personal renaissance. The final part of this circular path leads me back to my teaching of the same classical texts that so greatly influenced me as a young man, and I explain how my transformative experiences with both feminist theory and pedagogy motivated me to distill their critical approaches into a form and format that I have successfully implemented for my middle-school classroom.

In the essay “William Kennedy’s Ironweed: Francis Phelan’s Purgatorial Journey Back Home” I intend to show that William Kennedy has borrowed his narrative structure and symbolic language in the novel Ironweed from The Divine Comedy. I will also try to show how William Kennedy has used these allusions to enhance the imagery of Ironweed and the protagonist Francis Phelan’s wandering through the novel, and his return home. To accomplish this I will present a detailed comparative analysis of William Kennedy’s Ironweed and Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy.

I will begin by showing that Kennedy establishes the protagonist Francis Phelan as a Dante-like figure and a sinner who needs to go through purgatory to redeem himself. Moreover, Kennedy uses Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy’s landscape to enhance the imagery of a journey back home, and by showing that each chapter represents a different level on Mount Purgatory Kennedy makes Albany a symbol of the mountain itself. Details such as the mentioning of the seven deadly sins are also there to make the reader think of Dante and thereby reinforcing the image of The Divine Comedy’s landscape in Francis Phelan’s New York, Albany.

I also demonstrate that Kennedy borrows his symbolic structure from Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. For example, the intricate ending of Ironweed where several parallels can be drawn to Purgatory and Paradise reinforces the impression of Francis Phelan’s happiness, that is, a reader who is familiar with The Divine Comedy will appreciate and understand Francis Phelan’s happiness and the journey he has accomplished even more.

Second-wave feminist identities need to be understood as a product of a specific historical formation. These identities were frequently formed through a rejection of, and in opposition to, 'other' femininities and were often seen as opposed to, and 'outside', popular culture. This selection of publications by Joanne Hollows shows how feminist tastes are based on a rejection of both the' easy' pleasures associated with popular culture and the people who have a taste for these popular forms. The legacy of second-wave feminist thought makes it difficult to think through alternative ways of conceptualizing the relationship between feminism and popular culture. However, there is much to be learned by analyzing how feminism, and 'the feminist', has been produced, negotiated and reproduced within the popular. To do so also involves identifying how the generational politics of feminism produce different relationships with the popular. Just as the identity of the feminist was based on a refusal of the popular, it was also predicated on an escape from 'home' and maintaining a distance from the woman associated with domestic space, 'the housewife'. Not only does this produce particular difficulties for theorizing how elements of feminism might be articulated within domestic popular culture, but it also makes it difficult to conceptualize new domestic femininities that might emerge between the feminist and the housewife. By treating domestic femininities and masculinities historically through looking at case studies of domestic cookery, it becomes possible to identify how elements of feminism have been articulated within popular domestic practices.

Background: Adherence to prescribed home exercise for chronic low back pain (CLBP) is poor and this remains an under-researched area. There is no standard measure of exercise adherence and traditional health behaviour models are limited in their ability to explain non-adherence. This thesis aims to address these issues. Aim: To undertake a review of CLBP literature (Study 1), to develop a new measure (Study 2) and to investigate the role of psychosocial, clinical and executive function factors in explaining variation in exercise adherence in CLBP (Study 3). Design: Study 1 involved systematically reviewing factors associated with adherence to prescribed home exercise in CLBP. In Study 2, the Exercise Adherence Rating Scale (EARS) was developed. Study 3 was a prospective observational study of exercise adherence in a CLBP sample. Results: Study 1 found nine trials providing moderate evidence that higher health locus of control, supervision, participation in an exercise programme and participation in a behaviour change programme incorporating motivational strategies were associated with better exercise adherence in CLBP samples. In Study 2, a 1-factor solution explained 66% of the variance in adherence to exercise. Internal consistency (α = 0.758) and item-response theory methods indicated that EARS reliability was acceptable. In Study 3, longer duration of pain, higher present pain, lower educational level and being female significantly predicted poor adherence behaviour. Executive functions were not predictive of adherence behaviour. Conclusions: Study 1 highlighted a lack of good quality evidence and standardised measures of adherence. The EARS in Study 2 provided a valid and reliable assessment of adherence behaviour in a CLBP sample and now requires further testing. Results of Study 3 suggested factors influencing adherence to prescribed home exercise in patients with CLBP. The inclusion of these factors within health behaviour models may provide better explanatory models of exercise behaviour in CLBP.

ABSTRACT The research proposes the building of half a house akin to historic ‘back-to-back’ housing, withthe remaining ‘half’ built over the remaining lifetime of the owner, providing versatile andadaptable room and spaces for the life changes of the owner. The method is based on a uniqueAutodesk Generative Design defi nition providing a multi-objective design generation algorithmfor creating design iterations for the unbuilt future ‘half’. Each homeowner is able to then navigatethe thousands of design options generated to evaluate the potential cost of changes to the fabric(linked to the SPONS cost guide) of the house based on their individual lifetime changes; marriage,children, illness, dementia etc., to improve forward fi nancial planning. The work evaluates theeff ectiveness of the algorithm output through a series of comparisons with established ‘lifetimehome’ case studies. Negotiations connected with database renewals are sharply critical and ultimately impact renewal decisions. Today, academic libraries face an ever-consolidating marketplace, often accompanied by disruptive cost increases that toss sound reasoning aside. Instances of super-exponential cost increases transfigure once reasonable practices based on sound criteria to unsustainable subscriptions and inappropriate access models. Most troubling is that libraries have seldom been asked to participate in stakeholder discussions before these models and decisions were made. The paper reviews University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Libraries struggle with these changing metrics. In context, the paper looks at how recent political upheaval in Wisconsin has overturned Wisconsin’s progressive heritage and contributed to a rapid dismantling of state funding for public higher education and its’ associated services. Wisconsin has been known as a ‘laboratory for democracy’ with its’ Wisconsin Idea, publicly championing higher education’s mission and expertise in service of the common good. Times are changing. Today, not only does Wisconsin’s public higher education confront losses of state funding, it faces changing demographics, reduced FTE’s, all equating to even less budget dollars. In turn, budget shortfalls have made it nearly impossible to address declining infrastructures, needs for academic program reorganization and institutional restructuring, much less maintain and enhance existing services.

The pandemic has drastically changed the education landscape. The pedagogical practices, policies and procedures ingrained and refined over many years were suddenly rendered less effective. Overnight, new practices, policies and procedures had to be drafted to support teaching and learning. More than a year on, educators have found a new home, new pedagogies and practices have been refined and continue to be, policies and procedures are agile to support a volatile environment academia dwells in during the pandemic era. Building upon the work the Mobile Learning Special Interest Group (MLSIG) presented last year at the conference, we investigate the role mobile learning is and could play in emerging pandemic pedagogies. Eight vignettes are presented from universities around the world that are analysed using Activity Theory to understand the role of mobile devices and social tools for developing blended synchronous learning (BSL) and HyFlex learning.

This working paper examines the push and pull factors that shape return migration in the People’s Republic of China. This study draws on primary qualitative research in Dianjiang County of Chongqing Municipality. The push and pull factors are associated with the availability of assets both in migration destinations and back at home that the migrants can draw upon to support their livelihoods. These assets comprise financial, human, and social capital; family relations; access to social security, housing and infrastructure; and productive assets such as land.

In this Insight Note, we explore how COVID-19 and related school closures impacted Nigerian schools, parents, and students. National data collected by the National Bureau of Statistics in 2020 through a monthly phone survey show that children had extremely limited contact with the education system during this time, and that families preferred low-cost alternatives such as in-home tutoring and increased parental involvement in education to e-learning tools. Additional data collected by the RISE Nigeria Team in a survey of 73 low-cost private schools in Abuja suggest that some schools did maintain contact with students during mandated school closures, that students experienced absolute learning losses equivalent to about 5-6 months of school missed in other contexts (Cooper et al, 1996), despite participation in alternative learning activities, and that the pandemic led to severe financial hardships for schools and teachers.

There is a continued tragic loss of firefighter and civilian lives, as shown by fire statistics. One significant contributing factor is the lack of understanding of fire behavior in residential structures resulting from the use of ventilation as a firefighter practice on the fire ground. The changing dynamics of residential fires as a result of the changes in home construction materials, contents, size and geometry over the past 30 years compounds our lack of understanding of the effects of ventilation on fire behavior (Kerber S. , 2012). If used properly, ventilation improves visibility and reduces the chance of flashover or back draft. If a fire is not properly ventilated, it could result in an anticipated flashover, greatly reducing firefighter safety (Kerber S. , 2012). This fire research project developed empirical data from full-scale house fire experiments to examine vertical ventilation, suppression techniques and the resulting fire behavior. The purpose of this study was to improve firefighter knowledge of the effects of vertical ventilation and the impact of different suppression techniques. The experimental results may be used to develop tactical considerations outlining firefighting ventilation and suppression practices to reduce firefighter death and injury. This fire research project will further work from previous DHS AFG sponsored research (EMW-2008-FP-01774), which studied the impact of horizontal ventilation through doors and windows (Kerber S. , 2010).

In this Insight Note, we report results of a phone survey that the RISE Tanzania Research team conducted with 2,240 parents (or alternate primary care-givers) of primary school children following the school closures in Tanzania. After the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in Tanzania on 16 March 2020, the government ordered all primary schools closed the following day. Schools remained closed until 29 June 2020. Policymakers and other education stakeholders were concerned that the closures would lead to significant learning loss if children did not receive educational support or engagement at home. To help stem learning loss, the government promoted radio, TV, and internet-based learning content to parents of school-age children. The primary aims of the survey were to understand how children and families responded to the school closures, the education related activities they engaged in, and their strategies to send children back to school. The survey also measures households’ engagement with remote learning content over the period of school closures. We supplement the findings of the parent survey with insights from interviews with Ward Education Officers about their activities during the school closures. The survey sample is comprised of primary care-givers (in most cases, parents) of students enrolled in Grades 3 and 4 during the 2020 school year. The survey builds on an existing panel of students assessed in 2019 and 2020 in a nationally representative sample of schools.4 The parent surveys were conducted using Computer Assisted Telephonic Interviewing (CATI) over a two-week period in early September 2020, roughly two months after the re-opening of primary schools. We report the following key findings from this survey: *Almost all (more than 99 percent) of children in our sample were back in school two months after schools re-opened. The vast majority of parents believed it was either safe or extremely safe for their children to return to school. *Only 6 percent of households reported that their children listened to radio lessons during the school closures; and a similar fraction (5.5 percent) tuned into TV lessons over the same period. Less than 1 percent of those surveyed accessed educational programmes on the internet. Households with access to radio or TV reported higher usage. *Approximately 1 in 3 (36 percent) children worked on the family farm during the closures, with most children working either 2 or 3 days a week. Male children were 6.2 percentage points likelier to work on the family farm than female children. *Households have limited access to education materials for their child. While more than 9 out of 10 households have an exercise book, far fewer had access to textbooks (35 percent) or own reading books (31 percent). *One in four parents (24 percent) read a book to their child in the last week.
