One of the main ways to increase the rotary excavator productivity is to automate excavator operation. The article presents an automatic speed adjustment system for the stacking conveyor belt of a trench rotary excavator. It is shown that the automated control system will allow taking into account the rotor actual rotation speed and the bucket fill factor, processing data and solving tasks of the excavator operation automatic control in excavation mode. The represented automated control system will ensure the conveyor operation with the necessary, but not maximum speed. Therefore, the conveyor will not work “in vain”, that, in its turn, will reduce operating costs including energy.

In current freight railroad operations, locomotive control is shared between the human engineer and automated energy management systems such as GE Trip Optimizer. Transitions between the manual and automatic modes temporarily increase engineer workload above the demands of the current operating situation. Using the average response time and average number of secondary visual attention task stimuli presented as proxy measures of workload, we tracked the time course of workload during the mode transitions for two types of automated control system. The average response times peaked immediately after the mode change. The average number of stimuli presented peaked just before the mode change. We conclude that this technique of measuring workload would be very useful in evaluating future automated systems concepts in a train simulator.

The dynamic characteristics quality of automated warehouse directly affects its reliability and efficiency. It is difficult to get the dynamic properties of automated warehouse with traditional design methods. The physical model of the GWD2005 automatic warehouse is established with the finite element method. Modal analysis is applied to stacker structure. Natural frequency and vibration mode of automated warehouse is confirmed. The instability factors of existing structure vibration are studied. The results show that the analysis method is effective to design the structure of automated warehouse.

The task of interpreting p-mode spectra is complicated by the presence of a very large number of oscillation modes, each of which may appear (because of aliasing) in the power spectra corresponding to several values of l and m. Identifying peaks in a power spectrum with particular modes in an interactive fashion thus quickly becomes impractical. Here I describe an automated method for doing this identification. The method is based on an application of Bayes' theorem, which provides a simple way to use prior knowledge about the oscillation spectrum. The method takes as input the observed power spectra, and a model of the amplitudes and frequencies one expects to see.

At present, bone marrow analysis is performed microscopically, but is time consuming and labour intensive. No automated methods have been successfully applied to classification of bone marrows cells because automated blood cell analysers have been incapable of identifying erythroblasts. The present study was designed to evaluate automated analysis of bone marrow aspirates with the CELL-DYN 4000 (CD4000) haematology analyser, which enables automated determination of erythroblast counts in both the normal mode (haemolytic time; 11.5s) and the resistant RBC mode (34.0s). The percentages of subpopulations including lymphocytes, neutrophils and erythroblasts were obtained with the CD4000, and as a reference, differential counts by microscopic observation of May–Grünwald–Giesa-stained films of bone marrow aspirates were performed (n=98). Significant correlations (P < 0.01) between the results obtained with the two methods were observed for total nucleated cell count and lymphocytes, neutrophils, erythroblasts and myeloid/erythroid (M/E) ratio. However, there were biases in the average percentages of erythroblasts, lymphocytes and M/E ratio obtained using the normal mode with the CD4000 toward values lower than those obtained with the microscopic method. Using the RBC resistant mode with the CD4000, the average percentages of erythroblasts, lymphocytes and M/E ratio approximated those obtained with the microscopic method. In conclusion, the CD4000 in resistant RBC mode is more useful for analysis of bone marrow aspirates than is the normal mode, because the former better approximates the M/E ratio than the latter.

A global network of small automated telescopes, the Taiwan Automated Telescope (TAT) network, dedicated to photometric measurements of stellar pulsations, is under construction. Two telescopes have been installed in Teide Observatory, Tenerife, Spain and Maidanak Observatory, Uzbekistan. The third telescope will be installed at Mauna Loa Observatory, Hawaii, USA. Each system uses a 9-cm Maksutov-type telescope. The effective focal length is 225 cm, corresponding to anf-ratio of 25. The field of view is 0.62 degree square. The images are taken with a 16-bit1024×1024CCD camera. The telescope is equipped with UBVRI filters. Each telescope is fully automated. The telescope can be operated either interactively or fully automatically. In the interactive mode, it can be controlled through the Internet. In the fully automatic mode, the telescope operates with preset parameters without any human care, including taking dark frames and flat frames. The network can also be used for studies that require continuous observations for selected objects.

The key problem of operation optimization for automated container terminal is the coordinated scheduling of automated quay crane (QC), automated guided vehicle (AGV), and automated stacking crane (ASC). In order to solve this problem, this paper proposed a new method to optimize the scheduling of ASC and AGV. In the automated container terminal, each container block is equipped with twin ASCs. At the same time, buffer zones are set at both ends of the container block to achieve the decoupling operation among ASC, AGV, and container truck. Considering the buffer capacity constraint and twin ASC operation interference, and introducing the design of handshake area, this paper developed a collaborative scheduling model of AGV and ASC in automatic terminal relay operation mode. This model is designed based on the genetic algorithm. The model aims to minimize the AGV waiting time and the ASC running time. The results indicated that the introduction of handshake area can effectively reduce the ASC operation interference by 10.56% on average. Also, it can be found that increasing buffer capacity can reduce the waiting time of AGV by about 4.25% on average, and the effect of relay operation is more obvious in large-scale operation. It was proved that buffer zone and handshake area can reduce task delay time and improve coordination between AGV and ASC.

Transportation of sensitive flight hardware requires information about the expected transportation environment as well as the actual transportation environment during the part's movement—typically vibration with superimposed intermittent shocks. Each data type has different sampling, processing, and specification requirements. Analyzing shock data requires high sampling rates and leads to large file sizes. A barrier to analyzing data has been the vast quantity of information acquired. Previous approaches have focused either on manually separating data or on selectively recording extreme data. The use of an automated approach allows for quickly verifying vibration and shock levels while retaining the robustness of the underlying data set. Further, the automated approach allows the environments engineer to select criteria for shock/vibration sorting, which removes the subjectivity associated with visual differentiation. This automated technique evaluated several vehicles over four different road conditions in the same time that one data set could have been processed using visual discrimination. Automated processing of satellite shipment vibration and shock data is made thoroughly and objectively vs. traditional shock and tilt indicators. The automated technique could also be useful in processing large amounts of on-orbit data for changes in vibration signature.

SummaryDynamic equations of chain structured robotic manipulators with compliant links and joints are developed in a non-recursive symbolic form. A program is developed in REDUCE to automate the symbolic expansion of these equations for any given chain structured manipulator. The symbolic non-recursive form of dynamic model is particularly suitable for controller synthesis and real-time control implementations. The link flexibility is included in the formulation using assumed mode shapes. The mode shapes and the parameters that are functions of the mode shapes are kept in symbolic form so that once a symbolic model is generated, different types of mode shapes can be studied using the same model. Because of the structural similarity between the developed equations and the well known rigid manipulator equations, the computer automated symbolic expansion capability presented here are likely to be utilized widely by many other researchers in the area who are already familiar with rigid manipulator problems.

Mode errors are one kind of breakdown in human-computer interaction. The concept was developed originally in the context of relatively simple reactive computerized devices such as word processors. When a device possesses multiple modes, where something is done one way in one mode and another way in another mode, there is increased potential for erroneous actions. In this paper we extend and expand the concept of mode error to supervisory control of automated resources in event-driven situations such as pilot interaction with cockpit automation. In this type of situation, the state of the automated system can change in response to either operator input, situation factors or system factors. This creates complexities in tracking system mode changes over time, surprises created by “uncommanded” mode changes, and the possibility of errors of omission as well as commission in managing multiple system modes. Progress in our understanding of mode error in the context of highly automated systems is important in our ability to develop effective countermeasures for mode-related problems in human-computer cooperation.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A standard fuzzy logic controller is not robust enough to guarantee consistent closed-loop performance for highly non-linear plants. A finely tuned closed-loop response loses relevance as the system dynamics change with operating conditions. The self-adaptive fuzzy logic controller can track changes in the system parameters and modify the controller parameters accordingly. In most cases, self-adaptive fuzzy logic controllers are complex and rely on some form of mathematical plant model. The multi-mode fuzzy logic controller extends the working range of a standard fuzzy logic controller by incorporating knowledge of the non-linear system dynamics into the control rule-base. The complexity of the controller and difficulty in finding control rules have limited the application of multi-mode fuzzy logic controllers. An automated design algorithm is proposed for the design of a multi-mode control rule-base using qualitative plant knowledge. The design algorithm is cost function-based. The closed-loop response, local to a domain of the non-linear state space, can be tuned by manipulation of the cost function weights. Global closed-loop response tuning can be done by manipulation of the controller input gains. Alternatively, a self-learning or self-adaptive algorithm can be used in a model reference adaptive control architecture to optimise the control rule-base. Control rules responsible for unacceptable closed-loop performance are identified and their consequences modified. The validity of the proposed design method is evaluated in five case studies. The case studies illustrate the advantages of the multi-mode fuzzy logic controller. The results indicate that the proposed self-adaptive algorithm can be used to optimise a rule-base given a required closed-loop specification. If the system does not conform to the model reference adaptive architecture then the intuitive nature of the cost function based design algorithm proves to be an effective method for rule-base tuning.

The Small Aircraft Transportation System (SATS) is a partnership between the FAA, the NASA, US aviation companies, universities and state and local aviation officials. The purpose of SATS is to develop a system to handle future increase in Air Traffic, reduce time-travel, develop automation in Air Traffic Control (ATC) and make better use of small aircraft and underused airports. The Smart Landing Facility (SLF) is an important part of the program. The SLF is a small airport upgraded with equipment to support SATS aircraft. Among the SLF equipment, SATS needs new detection equipment, and eventually automation. This thesis investigates different techniques to avoid data collision in aircraft radar responses, and to reduce delays between landings and take offs. First, the paper shows how and when the radar receiver can separate two overlapped radar responses. Second, to avoid transponders responses overlapping, requirements in terms of aircraft safety distance are computed, different conflicts in air traffic around the SLF are examined and a solution is proposed for each case. And finally, the thesis investigates how far SATS can go in developing an automatic ATC system and what the role of future human operator will be in ATC.

This thesis presents the use of sliding mode control applied to a 1/10th scale robotic car to operate at a desired slip. Controlling the robot car at any desired slip has a direct relation to the amount of force that is applied to the driving wheels based on road surface conditions. For this model, the desired traction/slip is maintained for a specific surface which happens to be a Lego treadmill platform. How the platform evolved and the robot car was designed are also covered. To parameterize the system dynamics, simulated annealing is used to find the minimal error between mathematical simulations and physical test results. Also discussed is how the robot car and microprocessor can be modeled as a hybrid system. The results from testing the robot car at various desired percent slip show that it is possible to control the slip dynamics of a 1/10th scale automated robotic car and thus pave the way for further studies using scaled model cars to test an automated highway system.

Today the building energy modeling industry is facing a number of challenges, the advanced programs or methods developed for building energy modeling, are very technical and complex to be used, especially for earlier designs, and the easy programs or methods are not accurate. Moreover, more than a hundred programs developed for energy modeling, have been used in the same building, but most of the time the results differed by about 30%. That is why this thesis has developed a new building energy model in System Modeling Language (SysML), in order to meet, at the same time, the accuracy and the simplicity to be used for future and existing buildings. In this thesis, SysML has been used to develop an energy model and to set up an automation system to the existing building. SysML can do more than simulations, but this thesis is limited to only the simulations steps by using easy applications of SysML and fewer diagrams which could develop in a complete building energy model. SysML is the extension of Unified modeling Language (UML), which uses fewer diagrams than UML. SysML is simple, open and more flexible to be used in any Engineering System. The previous chapter describes SysML and gives the overview and the platform of SysML. The simulations of SysML in this project have been developed through Enterprise Architect and Mat lab software. The inputs used to simulate the program are the parameters of the existing building chosen for modeling that is a student residential building complex located in Stellenbosch, Western Cape in South Africa. Automation system program used in this thesis was based on the norms and building standards of South Africa, renewable energy and the requirements of the buildings’ occupants, in order to meet energy efficiency and safety of the occupants.

The challenges for the next generation of integrated circuit (IC) design of analogue and mixed-signal building blocks in standard CMOS technologies for moderate signal conversion in broadband applications, demand research progr~ss in the emerging scientific fields of device physics and modelling, converter architectures, correction algorithms, design automation, technology development, quality assurance and cost factor analysis. The contribution of this thesis to converter architectures is in new topological reusable bUilding blocks for analogue-to-digital (ADC) current converters and improved switching techniques for digital-to-ana.'tlgue (DAC) current converters. A generic compiler for the current folding and interpolating ADC and current steering DAC converter architectures, which take into account the fast technological CMOS changes in an automated down-link towards the basic building blocks, reduces the design time considerably. The new current converter architectures have been realized for 12-bit accuracy in standard CMOS technology. The generic compiler allows fast architectural exploration for other converter specification and the impact on the sizing of the transistors at basic building blocks level for a certain quality specification to be determined. The contributions to modelling, quality assurance and cost factor are the total new concepts in deriving design curves to reduce the design time and to reduce the total chip area of the current converters. For each new technology design curves for standardized transistor sizes for noise level, threshold voltage, I-V curves, overdrive voltage versus lambda and mismatch error modeling of the standard deviation of the drain current for the target operation condition, are automatically derived. For other transistor sizes the values are calculated in an automated procedure. These new design concepts reduce the over-sizing of the transistors, compared to the existing methods, with 15 to 20% for the same quality specification. Besides the reduction of the silicon cost also the design time cost is reduced considerably.

Despite growing interest in low-speed automated shuttles, pilot deployments have only just begun in a few places in the U.S., and there is a lack of studies that estimate the impacts of a widespread deployment of automated shuttles designed to supplement existing transit networks. This project estimated the potential impacts of automated shuttles based on a deployment scenario generated for a sample geographic area: Santa Clara County, California. The project identified sample deployment markets within Santa Clara County using a GIS screening exercise; tested the mode share changes of an automated shuttle deployment scenario using BEAM, an open-source beta software developed at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to run traffic simulations with MATSim; elaborated the model outputs within the R environment; and then estimated the related impacts. The main findings have been that the BEAM software, despite still being in its beta version, was able to model a scenario with the automated shuttle service: this report illustrates the potential of the software and the lessons learned. Regarding transportation aspects, the model estimated automated shuttle use throughout the county, with a higher rate of use in the downtown San José area. The shuttles would be preferred mainly by people who had been using gasoline-powered ride hail vehicles for A-to-B trips or going to the bus stop, as well as walking trips and a few car trips directed to public transport stops. As a result, the shuttles contributed to a small decrease in emissions of air pollutants, provided a competitive solution for short trips, and increased the overall use of the public transport system. The shuttles also presented a solution for short night trips—mainly between midnight and 2 am—when there are not many options for moving between points A and B. The conclusion is that the automated shuttle service is a good solution in certain contexts and can increase public transit ridership overall.

The RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM) is Canada's latest system of C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Earth observation satellites. The system of three satellites, spaced equally in a common orbit, allows for a rapid four-day repeat interval. The RCM has been designed with a selection of stripmap, spotlight, and ScanSAR beam modes which offer varied combinations of spatial resolution and coverage. Using Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) techniques, the growing archive of SAR data gathered by RCM can be used for change detection and ground deformation monitoring for diverse applications in Canada and around the world. In partnership with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), the Canada Centre for Mapping and Earth Observation (CCMEO) has developed an automated system for generating standard and advanced deformation products and change detection from SAR data acquired by RCM and RADARSAT-2 satellites using DInSAR processing methodology. Using this system, this paper investigates four key interferometric properties of the RCM system which were not available on the RADARSAT-1 or RADARSAT-2 missions: The impact of the high temporal resolution of the four-day repeat cycle of the RCM on temporal decorrelation trends is tested and fitted against simple temporal decay models. The effect of the normalization and the precision of the radiometric calibration on interferometric spatial coherence is investigated. The performance of the RCM ScanSAR mode for wide area interferometric analysis is tested. The performance of the novel RCM Compact-polarization (CP) mode for interferometric analysis is also investigated.

The purpose of the study is to highlight the theoretical and methodological aspects of preparing the test questions of the most common types in the form of text files for further import into learning management system (LMS) Moodle. The subject of the research is the automated filling of the Moodle LMS test database. The objectives of the study: to analyze the import files of test questions, their advantages and disadvantages; to develop guidelines for the preparation of test questions of common types in the form of text files for further import into Moodle LMS. The action algorithms for importing questions and instructions for submitting question files in such formats as Aiken, GIFT, Moodle XML, “True/False” questions, “Multiple Choice” (one of many and many of many), “Matching”, with an open answer – “Numerical” or “Short answer” and “Essay” are offered in this article. The formats for submitting questions, examples of its designing and developed questions were demonstrated in view mode in Moodle LMS.
