This discussion of George Loyau's prolific literary output will examine journalism in the wider context of literary production and raise questions about the role of journalists as entertainers as well as social and political commentators. Journalism remained Loyau's working profession for four decades (1860–1898). Yet it is easily overlooked because of his significant contribution to early Australian poetry and history. Loyau's verse and fiction were widely disseminated in the colonial press of the 1860s and 1870s, a time when he wrote for metropolitan and regional papers in all the mainland colonies except Western Australia. Regional Queensland, however, was the starting point and final location for a remarkable career which combined periods of public prominence with harrowing personal adversity. Indeed, the distinctive irony of Loyau's career is that adversity was never more acute than in those periods when his reputation as a poet and historian was being made. By contrast, regional journalism provided Loyau with the material means and social support he lacked in the large colonial centres. A recurring theme for the larger study of colonial journalists is the question of mobility. While metropolitan and political reporting were mostly highly prized by ambitious young journalists, Loyau's career confirms the role of regional networks in journalism and the existence of a class of readers who continued to crave popular fiction and entertainment as weekly staples. Although such journalism remained at odds with the political culture of the Fourth Estate, Loyau's literary persona proved both durable and complex, combining a deepseated sense of cultural inferiority with the celebration of the ephemeral through the practices of popular journalism.

This article reviews the significant and diverse range of research in applied linguistics published in Australia in the period 2008–2014. Whilst acknowledging that a great deal of research by Australian scholars has been published internationally during these seven years, this review is based on books, journal articles, and conference proceedings published in Australia. Many of these sources will be unfamiliar to an international audience, and the purpose of this article is to highlight this body of research and the themes emerging from it. The journals selected in this review includeAustralian Journal of Language and Literacy, Australian Review of Applied Linguistics (ARAL), BABEL, English in Australia, English Australia, Papers in Language Testing and Assessment, Prospect: An Australian Journal of TESOL, TESOL in Context, andUniversity of Sydney Papers in TESOL. Selected refereed proceedings are from key national conferences including: ALAA (Applied Linguistics Association of Australia), ACTA (Australian Council of TESOL Association), ASFLA (Australian Systemic Functional Linguistics Association), and ALS (Australian Linguistics Society). Our review of selected applied linguistics work revolves around the following themes: the responses to the needs of government planning and policy; the complexity of Australia's multicultural, multilingual society; the concern for recognizing context and culture as key factors in language and language learning; social activism in supporting language pedagogy and literacy programmes at all levels of education; and acknowledgement of the unique place held by Indigenous languages and Aboriginal English in the national linguistic landscape.

AbstractVance and Nettie Palmer were among Australia's most important literary partnerships. Previous accounts of their life and work underplay their commitment to the creation of an environmental imagination. After the trauma and disillusion of the Great War, they lived in Caloundra from 1925 to 1929 (and from then had an ongoing connection). While it is generally acknowledged how important their time there was in terms of Vance's emerging work in literary fiction, and through Nettie's work as a freelance journalist, what has not been addressed is their extraordinary environmental writings about the region. Regional writings were largely dismissed in the 1990s as of comparative insignificance to national narratives — just as today the reputation of the inter-war writers, those associated with the Palmers, is at a low ebb. During the 1920s, Nettie developed critical categories to accommodate a double standard in Australian writing: regional and universal literature. She went on to argue for the support of writing in Australia at the regional level. Vance reflected on his explorations of place directly in a series of articles. This paper reframes the Palmers’ Caloundra work in the ‘bio-regional’ terms of climate change and the historical cultural imaginary.

Religion has ‘returned’ to news discourses, since 9/11, with a focus on Muslims and Islam and more recently on Catholicism (in the wake of paedophile priest scandals) and anti-Semitism (with the rise of the far-right movements). These news discourses, however, tend to adopt limited perspectives, and do not reflect the diversity of practices and viewpoints within these religious traditions. As Australia becomes increasingly ‘superdiverse’, there is a greater need for the inclusivity of cultural perspectives of these religions. Current research findings show that religious literacy among media practitioners in Australia is not only limited to specific notions about a small number of religions, it is exacerbated by an Anglo-Celtic dominance in the media workforce. This article suggests that for news media to provide a more culturally and religiously inclusive public service to promote societal understanding, current and emerging journalists require a more reflexive understanding of religions, through journalism studies and humanities more broadly, and how they have historically shaped the world, and continue to do so.

This article examines the extent to which data journalism (DJ) is being taught in Australian universities. It presents the results of interviews with 35 journalism academics about how they are incorporating data journalism into their courses. It includes details about the types of data journalism skills they are teaching, the resources they are using and the hindrances that have met or are making it difficult to teach data journalism. These hindrances include low and varied levels of quantitative literacy and math aversion among students, lack of time for upskilling and limited room in their courses for new material. The study found that at least nine Australian universities have semester-long units dedicated to data journalism and that at least a further nine are teaching it via some lectures and activities. Almost all respondents thought more should be done to incorporate data journalism into the curricula. This article lays a foundation for future exploration of how data journalism could be incorporated into journalism programmes where the staff requires upskilling.

This study emerged from an incidental, and somewhat surprising, finding that 15 percent of working journalists who attend training on improving the ways that mainstream new media report stories about Islam and Muslims, wrongly associated Sikhism with Islam. We wondered if this was indicative of the Australian population and, through a random stratified survey of the Australian population, found that it was. The question about the extent to which populations wrongly associate Sikhism with Islam is an important one. In Australia, Muslims and Sikhs are minorities. Ignorance of Islam and its religious diversity coupled with ignorance of Muslims and their ethnic and cultural diversity underpins the intolerance of Islam in the West and the concomitant animus directed at Muslims. Intolerance and violence directed at Muslims and people wrongly assumed to be Muslims (such as Sikhs) increased after the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001 (9/11). This speaks to religious literacy, the treatment of religious minorities and raises important questions around educating various publics (including the news media) about both Islam and Sikhism. It also speaks to the role of the mainstream news media in perpetuating Islamophobia, and its detrimental flow-on effects to Muslims and Sikhs.

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate and compare the traditions shaping the development of literary journalism in Australia and Germany. Tracing the different historical developments of the form in the two countries provides the contextual basis for an in-depth comparative analysis, which concentrates on the concepts of credibility and authenticity. The thesis explores whether different attitudes to news and opinion in journalism in the two countries influence these notions that are central to literary journalism. However, in the comparative analysis other significant factors become apparent. In four case studies, two from each country, consisting of book-length examples of literary journalism, distinct journalistic and literary criteria are applied to gain insights of how credibility and authenticity are achieved and to what extent this influences the perception of these works. One key finding is that in Germany the main instrument to achieve authenticity and credibility is eyewitness reporting in the strict sense of the word, that is, the writer experienced what he or she writes about first-hand. Australia, on the other hand, allows more room and greater emphasis for narrative techniques combined with well-researched and verifiable facts. This difference in understanding of authenticity is also supported by the other key finding that diverging media laws and regulations, above all the laws protecting privacy and personality, greatly influence the production and reception of literary journalism in the two countries. For Germany, this means that the scope for the form is far narrower than in the Anglo-American world, to which Australia belongs.

Give and Tell brings together research, practice and reflection to generate new understandings about the changing nature of giving in Australia and story-telling techniques available to journalists who are interested in facilitating public discussion about these social changes. Contemporary giving is shaped by personal, emotional, shared, creative, and innovative responses. This study finds that for journalists to effectively use features journalism to capture and subsequently reframe philanthropy, they will need an understanding of emotion and its impact on framing, emotional intelligence and an appreciation of the storytelling devices and strategies available to engage readers and create a shared experience of giving.

This dissertation is an investigation into and analysis of the literary output of the Australian writer, Charmian Clift. It attempts, primarily, a critical discussion of the novels, short stories and journalism that form the body of Clift's own published and unpublished work. Because of the emphasis in thest texts on the role of women in society, I also assess the changing nature of the reception of Clift's work and its contribution to Australian women's writing. Clift has yet to be generally acknowledged as a writer of substance, yet her work has much to say about the issues which were, and are, important to women's writing. To date, Clift's writing has been discussed in terms of her role as a popular columnist and 'travel writer,' or of her life story--what has become known as the 'Clift phenomenon,' that is, biographically-based commentary which features her role as a flamboyant and bohemain personality who was the wife or writer George Johnston. The result is that Clift has largely been discussed within the boundaries of this 'persona' in the popular press; she has not received similar critical attention to Johnston. As the outpouring of feeling on the news of Clift's death vividly indicated, she had developed a loyal readership. This readership did not dissipate with her death and is, in fact, being consolidated with reissues of her work. To a large extent, therefore, this dissertation is an attempt to assert Clift's literary contribution and to push away the constraints of a pre-existing tendency to a biographical focus on her work. To do this I concentrate on the solo-authored published and unpublished texts, referring only to the collaborative works written with Johnston when this is helpful to an analysis of the solo-authored texts. The issue of collaboration, and the related aspect of inter-textuality, requires a detailed analysis of George Johnston's work as well, an interesting project but one which is beyond the scope of this dissertation. I therefore examine the collaborative work only in terms of my overall aim of development of Clift's own 'writing self.' To do this I employ insights from feminist and other literary theory in order to develop a flexible enough framework in which to assess the diverse range of writing produced by Clift. I discuss the texts in terms of the notion of inversion of 'fact as fiction' and 'fiction as fact,' in order to gain access to the different levels of Clift's work. I also note the evolution of Clift's work, culminating in the autobiographical fiction of her unpublished texts. These texts, written at the end of her career, represent the beginnings of Clift's best work--writing in which she had begun to speak in 'her own voice.' Had this progress contiued, Clift would, I maintain, have received the critical attention she so dearly desired.

Literary journals have always held a shifting and uncertain place in Australian cultural life, and in recent years, technological developments have both destabilised and provided new possibilities for literary journal publishing. While literary journals have a long history of adapting to challenges, material changes in publication media brought about by the introduction of digital publishing technologies have struck deeper than ever before, and prompted questions about journals' survival and relevance. These questions have, as yet, been the subject of little academic inquiry. This project aims to fill this gap in the knowledge of literary publishing in the 'messy', 'post-digital' publishing ecology, which is characterised by change and negotiations between media and their materialities. The research examines the role materiality plays in the literary journal field within this landscape, and asks how literary journal editors exploit the languages of different media to achieve their goals. In responding to these questions, the research employs methodology that combines interviews with Australian literary journal editors and textual analysis, complemented by a contextual review and underpinned by a theoretical framework based on the sociology of literature. The research argues that a combination of economic, technological, and cultural factors has given rise to a 'hierarchy of media' favouring print in the literary journal field. Within this hierarchy, editors' opinions and activities, funding constraints, and changing markets position print as a site of literary and symbolic value. This hierarchy can, however, be called into question when editors' perspectives are mitigated by those of readers and writers. Here, digital and print textualities and literacies are defined by difference, rather than their capacity to communicate literary or symbolic value. This thesis presents findings on the economics and culture of the Australian literary journal field, and the ways literary journal editors communicate through media and their materialities in the 'post-digital' publishing ecology.

This thesis reports on a qualitative study that explores how Australian researchers experience open access as part of their information literacy. The research used a qualitative approach, with in depth semi structured interviews and thematic analysis. The study revealed four themes: Understanding Open Access, Institutional Repositories, Publishing and Dissemination, and Finding Information. The themes signify that open access is shaping how Australian researchers experience information literacy, influencing how Australian researchers are, and can be, informed and informing researchers.

This thesis consists of an introduction and six of my books, published between 1985 and 1999, on aspects of the history of women in nineteenth-century Australia. The books are The Governesses: Letters from the Colonies 1862-1882 (1985); A Colonial Woman: The Life and Times of Mary Braidwood Mowle 1827-1857 (1986); Pen Portraits: Women Writers and Journalists in Nineteenth Century Australia (1988); Pioneer Writer: The Life of Louisa Atkinson, Novelist, Journalist, Naturalist (1990); Tasma: The Life of Jessie Couvreur (1994); and Rosa! Rosa! A Life of Rosa Praed, Novelist and Spiritualist (1999). At the time they were published each of these books either dealt with a new subject or presented a new approach to a subject. Collectively they represent a body of work that has expanded knowledge of women's lives and writing in nineteenth-century Australia. Although not consciously planned as a sequence at the outset, these books developed as a result of the influence on my thinking of the themes that emerged in Australian social and cultural historical writing during this period. The books also represent a development in my own work from the earlier more documentary-based books on letters and diaries to the interpretive challenge of biographical writing and the weaving of private lives with public achievements. These books make up a cohesive, cumulative body of work. Individually and as a whole, they make an original contribution to knowledge of the lives and achievements of women in nineteenth-century Australia. They received critical praise at the time of publication and have led to renewed interest and further research on the subjects they cover. My own knowledge and expertise has developed as a result of researching and writing them. The Governesses was not only the first full-length study of a particular group of letters but it also documented aspects of the lives of governesses in Australia, a little researched subject to that time. A Colonial Woman, based on a previously unpublished and virtually unknown diary, pointed to the importance of 'ordinary' lives in presenting an enriched view of the past. Pen Portraits documented the early history of women journalists in Australia, a previously neglected subject. Three of the women I included in Pen Portraits, Louisa Atkinson, Tasma and Rosa Praed, the first two of whom were pioneer women journalists as well as novelists, became the subjects of my full-length biographies. In my biographies of women writers, Pioneer Writer, Tasma, and Rosa! Rosa!, I recorded and interpreted the lives of these important writers placing them in the context of Australian cultural history as women who negotiated gender barriers and recorded this world in their fiction. My books on Louisa Atkinson and Tasma were the first full-length biographies of these significant but largely forgotten nineteenth-century women writers, while my biography of Rosa Praed was the first for more than fifty years. Each introduced original research that changed perceptions of the women's lives and consequently of attitudes to their creative work. Each provided information essential for further research on their historical significance and literary achievements. Each involved extensive research that led to informed interpretation allowing insightful surmises essential to quality biography.

Анотація:
Nonfiction books written by Australian journalists are increasingly recognised by scholars (Joseph 2016a; Keeble 2015) as authentic contributions to literary journalism. This study undertakes a case study analysis of the nonfiction writing practice of four Australian journalists: Christopher Kremmer, Annabel Crabb, Ben Stubbs and Shannon Harvey. Their explanations of key influences on their nonfiction writing such as news reporting experiences and motivations for writing nonfiction are investigated. The story-crafting techniques they each employed to write one nonfiction book, namely, Inhaling the Mahatma (Kremmer 2006), Ticket to Paradise (Stubbs 2012), The Wife Drought (Crabb 2014) and The Whole Health Life (Harvey 2016) are a focal point of this analysis. Present scholarship indicates a gap in knowledge of Australian journalists’ nonfiction writing practices that this study seeks to partly address. A case study methodology was adopted as it enables in-depth analysis (Saldaña 2015) of individual journalists’ nonfiction writing styles, and “because it is one of the most immediately recognised genres of qualitative research” (Saldaña 2015, p. 3). Each case comprises a narrative analysis of two semi-structured interviews with each journalist, informed by reading and interpreting the abovementioned books. Sims, a pioneer literary journalism scholar, advises that studies should not “mimic that of [only] one sector of the academy” (2009, p. 8). Therefore, this study is based on related concepts from journalism studies and philosophy, and it was informed by late philosopher Sartre’s view that “writing is a certain way of wanting freedom” (1947, p. 65), where the author assumes sole responsibility for texts they create. With works of nonfiction, like those examined in this thesis, this concept of author accountability is especially important. Concepts from journalism studies are used to interpret the journalists’ nonfiction writing practice: Geiber’s (1964) view that creating longer news narratives is an intensely personal experience for sensitive journalists despite organisational and government restrictions imposed on them; Sims’ (1984) five key characteristics of literary journalism; and Eason’s explanation of literary journalists who write in a “realist” style (2008, pp. 192-193). While literary journalism scholarship has flourished in the United States of America and the United Kingdom since at least the 1960s (Sims 1984), scholarship in Australia is still developing (Ricketson & Joseph 2015). This study investigates the nonfiction writing approaches of four journalists to identify how their nonfiction books contribute to Australian literary journalism.

This thesis by publication is composed of five peer-reviewed papers reporting on findings from data collected and analysed over a five year period. Each paper relates to the theme of the Media Doctor website as a tool for assessing and improving the quality of health reporting in the general Australian news media. The first paper (Chapter 3) “Monitoring the quality of medical news reporting: Early experience with ‘media doctor’“ presents early data, providing a baseline overview of health reporting using the four categories of pharmaceutical, surgical, diagnostic testing and ‘other’ stories. In Chapter 4, the second paper, “Media Reporting of Health Intervention: Signs of Improvement but Major Problems Persist” examines the changes in the quality of news stories in these categories. This paper also provides an analysis of how the individual items on the rating instrument differed between subject categories, outlets and over time. In Chapter 5, the third paper, “Does it matter who writes medical news stories“ looks at differences in story quality by examining different author categories and whether news stories written by certain types of journalists have significant differences. The fourth and fifth papers examine the quality of news reporting of two specific types of story: 1) Complementary and Alternative Medicines (CAM) and 2) Stories about cancer (Chapter 6). “An analysis of news media coverage of complementary and alternative medicine” identified all news stories on the website that dealt with CAM interventions and analysed these in order to assess the overall quality compared with the scores of stories about mainstream health interventions. The fifth paper of the thesis “Deconstructing Cancer: What makes a good quality news story” looks at how the reporting of a specific disease, cancer, performs across both subject categories and rating items. This thesis also examines the state of knowledge in the existing literature via extensive literature review of interventions to improve the reporting of health news stories, and the development of a validated rating instrument. The thesis concludes by summarising the papers’ findings to give an overall assessment of the quality of health news stories in Australia. The data reveals the strongest and weakest facets of health reporting and which media outlets and writers produced the ‘best’ and ‘worst’ quality health news stories in the context of the quality scores awarded using the rating instrument. It examines the impact of these findings on public health and explores interventions to improve reporting in this area.

This chapter traces the lodestar role that Katherine Mansfield played for the Australian literary critic Nettie Palmer. Palmer’s literary archive reveals her enchantment with Mansfield as a reader, writer and literary journalist, highlighting the impact of Mansfield’s posthumously published personal writing on her. Mansfield’s presence in Palmer’s archive exposes a thread of literary influence between literary critics and, through Palmer, to an even wider network of literary correspondents. In Palmer’s reviews, letters and notebooks Mansfield alters, chameleon-like, to fit her purpose: the successful colonial writer in exile, the mourned absent contemporary and the incisive literary critic who prompts Palmer to reflect on her own professional writing.

From the 1840s, and over the course of the next six decades, new and emerging print trade unions backed the launch of monthly typographical trade press journals in the USA, UK, South Africa, and Australia. Many were short-lived, or underwent multiple transformations of title, frequency, and format throughout their lifespan. The aim of these journals was to inform, entertain, and support the development of a cooperative, shared professional trade identity and working-class literary culture. They shared information and borrowed material from each other, reproducing trade news, working-class poetry and other items from sister publications when needed. A feature of many of these typographical journals was the use of in-house compositor-poets and creative writers. Many of these individuals have now been forgotten. One of the aims of this chapter is to focus attention on their roles as labour laureates and on their significance in cultural history and print culture studies.

HIV is a virus that causes AIDS. This fact is well established. And yet a vocal group of fringe scientists, freelance journalists, and Internet bloggers persistently deny the existence of HIV. AIDS deniers share the same strategies and tactics seen in other denialist groups, including climate change deniers, Holocaust deniers, and anti-vaccine activists. Refuting the basic science of HIV has caused the early death of people infected with the virus who have ignored their diagnosis and refused life-saving treatments. In South Africa, AIDS denialism resulted in hundreds of thousands of senseless deaths. Most recently, AIDS denialism has infiltrated the criminal justice systems in the US, Canada, and Australia. AIDS denialism is best addressed by correcting medical misinformation, improving science literacy and calling out the pseudoscientific backgrounds and fraudulent claims of AIDS denialists.
