The Arctic region faces many threats but also opportunities due to economic, climate, environmental, cultural, social, professional, educational, and institutional changes, which also necessitate new perspectives on sustainable education. When implementing sustainable education in the Arctic, it is important to increase knowledge and understanding of the special features of Arctic areas—their opportunities and vulnerabilities. In this article, the model of Arctic sustainable education (ASE) has been introduced. It is based on a new kind of lifestyle that illustrates respectful and responsible attitudes toward other people and nature. What are the special features of the teaching and learning of ASE and how to organize it? In this theoretical article, we have discussed the challenges and goals, and possibilities and significance of ASE by leaning on the five cornerstones, concerning learning and teaching of SE in schools and organizations: why, what, how, who, and when. The ASE may provide new ideas to develop sustainable education not just in the Arctic region but also elsewhere as it gets its special opportunities and expectations in a context- and time-bound manner. In conclusion, the role of educational psychology in ASE has been viewed and discussed.

The European Union (EU) is increasingly depicted as an actor with a growing interest towards the Arctic region. In order to shed light on the various possibilities for the EU's involvement in Arctic affairs, this article aims to have a close look at potential EU 'gateways' to the Arctic, subdivided into geographical-institutional and policy links, and their logical interaction. The former aspect looks at the historical, institutional, and legal links between the EU and the three Arctic actors Norway, Iceland, and Greenland. The latter examines concrete steps of cooperation between the EU and these countries in selected, Arctic-relevant policy areas. These include the challenges of environmental protection in general and climate change and sustainable development in particular, and the possibilities of benefitting from newly available Arctic resources such as oil and gas, shipping routes and fishing grounds.

In most policy areas the EU is either the main forum in which Danish foreign policy is conducted or the most important forum together with bilateral action. However, the Kingdom of Denmark’s Artic policy is an exception in this respect. The article suggests an answer to why the role of the EU is much less prominent in the Kingdom’s policy towards the Arctic than in most other areas of Danish foreign policy: the combination of a very strongly articulated Danish agency with regard to the Arctic and an EU policy which is not intensive but still resourceful. This makes for a Danish foreign policy which includes the EU in certain areas but also aims to limit the EU’s geopolitical influence and control its influence on the daily life of the people of the Arctic. In addition, the fragile character of the Kingdom of Denmark construction reinforces the sensitivity vis-à-vis of involvement of the EU. This article analyses the actorness of the European Union (EU) in Arctic governance. As a result of melting ice caps, this region is of increasing geopolitical and commercial importance. All Arctic coastal states have therefore recently developed policies. The EU is doing so as well as it has a direct interest in many issue areas. Maritime policy in the Arctic region affects European transport companies; environmental issues relate to the EU's policy on climate change; and border delimitations are relevant, as they determine access to new energy sources. In these different issue areas, the degree of EU actorness, however, varies. With the exception of the negotiations over the legal status of the Northwest Passage, the EU mainly plays a role regarding non-regulatory and non-binding issues. It has thus far been kept out of talks of a regulatory and binding nature. This variation across issue areas shows the limited role of the EU as an international actor in Arctic governance, despite the region's acknowledged increasing importance.

Professional activity in the conditions of the Arctic has certain features affecting the psycho-emotional condition of a person that can lead to the development of psychosomatic disorders and physical diseases. We evaluated the level of anxiety of psychiatric nurses (N=55) in the conditions of the Arctic for the purpose of early identification of premorbid states, prevention of emergence of psycho-emotional disturbances, and psychosomatic diseases in nurses. We determined that work experience, age, and shift work influenced the level of situational and personal anxiety. It was revealed that an increase in anxiety which is a symptom of psycho-emotional tension, depended on social factors (income and marital status), shift work, and managerial responsibilities and can be aggravated both with features of professional activity, and accommodation to the conditions of the Far North.

Climate change is generating sufficient risk for nation-states and citizens throughout the Arctic to warrant potentially radical geoengineering solutions. Currently, geoengineering solutions such as surface albedo modification or aerosol deployment are in the early stages of testing and development. Due to the scale of deployments necessary to enact change, and their preliminary nature, these methods are likely to result in unforeseen consequences. These consequences may range in severity from local ecosystem impacts to large scale changes in available solar energy. The Arctic is an area that is experiencing rapid change, increased development, and exploratory interest, and proposed solutions have the potential to produce new risks to both natural and human systems. This article examines potential security and ethical considerations of geoengineering solutions in the Arctic from the perspectives of securitization, consequentialism, and risk governance approaches, and argues that proactive and preemptive frameworks at the international level, and especially the application of risk governance approaches, will be needed to prevent or limit negative consequences resulting from geoengineering efforts. Utilizing the unique structures already present in Arctic governance provides novel options for addressing these concerns from both the perspective of inclusive governance and through advancing the understanding of uncertainty analysis and precautionary principles.

Moore, William R. "Planning for social and psychological needs at a Canadian Arctic military installation." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/30012.

Анотація:
The Canadian Arctic is a region that greatly contrasts with the remainder of Canada, particularly the main area of settlement: the thin strip of land in southern Canada along the United States boundary. Since Canadian military personnel come primarily from southern Canada, being sent to an arctic installation places them in an unfamiliar, confined, isolated and potentially threatening environment that may expose them to social and psychological stresses that they are unprepared to encounter. Planning of an arctic military installation must consider physical design constraints such as construction in areas of permafrost and physical protection from the harsh natural environment. However, planning should also consider the social and psychological needs of the inhabitants. The purpose of this thesis is to identify measures that should be considered in planning a Canadian arctic military installation in order to alleviate the social and psychological stresses of this unique environment. The scope is limited to investigating primarily the military environment, although relevant material is drawn from other sources through a literature review. In order to identify the stresses of this environment, to understand their potential effects, and to suggest measures to alleviate these effects, a explicit concept of stress is required. A literature review is used to discuss the concept of stress and define a model of stress that is applied in the subsequent analysis in the thesis. This model, the transactional or interactional model, emphasizes the individuality of the experience of stress. Stress is a dynamic phenomenon that includes the capacity of an individual to not only cope with stress, but also learn from the coping experience. The experience of stress is a process affected by the characteristics of the environment, the characteristics of the individual and the relationship between the individual and his natural, man-made and social environment. A second literature review is conducted to discuss the potential social and psychological stresses that could apply to military personnel posted to the unique environment of a Canadian arctic military installation. The more salient characteristics of this environment that imply social and psychological stresses are those of isolation and confinement. Efforts suggested in the literature aimed at either avoiding or ameliorating the incidence of stress in an isolated and confined environment include actions that would be taken: a. in the design of the station built environment; b. in the screening and selection of station personnel; c. during the indoctrination training of personnel prior to deployment; and d. throughout the operation of the station. These measures were applied, via a case study of Canadian Forces Station Alert, to gauge their relevancy in planning a Canadian arctic military installation. Many of these measures are currently in practice; however, particular characteristics of the Canadian military and an arctic military station make changes in specific emphasis. Characteristics which apply are those of: a. the differences in station size; b. the differences in climate and natural environment; c. the need to maintain continuous station operation without the disruption of complete member rotation; d. the limited source population from which to select members for service in the Arctic; e. a station composed of service persons of the Canadian military is typically more homogeneous in composition; f. the differences in the circumstances under which the members are employed, as Canadian service members in the Arctic are less likely to be volunteers; g. the members of the Canadian Forces have already had some experience in postings to isolated environments; and h. the marital status of members has particular importance due to the added difficulities for service families.

This research inserts itself in the context of the Laboratory of Studies in Psychology of Art (LAPA-USP), and it tackles the theme of the correspondence between the arts and the unity of the senses. I assume the interdisciplinary posture of the Laboratory, with phenomenological, aesthetic, and psychoanalytic references, in order to examine the novel Lavoura arcaica, by Raduan Nassar, and the homonymic movie directed by Luiz Fernando Carvalho, attending mainly to the correspondence between the two records. To do that I dealt with the conditions for the emergence of the movie from the reading of the novel, I investigated the links between the two works, and then I turned my attention to the language, which made me discuss the theme of diversity and unity in the multiplicity of Lavoura arcaica. To investigate and to rebuild the two forms of the narrative in this research then created a third narrative.

This thesis deals with the connection between mythology and psychagogy, and a structured way of reading and using myth for personal development is suggested. The myth of Demeter and Persephone is used for this purpose, and the text of the Homeric Hymn to Demeter is analysed as the basic (but not exclusive) text. In the modern world the psychagogic component relies on the work of Jung, which is seen as the most appropriate template available. His concept of the archetype is particularly useful, and the archetype of the mother goddess is analysed as a representation of the personal and spiritual development of modern women.

The city of Poseidonia-Paestum on the Italian peninsula has a long and manifold history throughout Antiquity. The city was founded by Greek settlers in the seventh century BC, put under Lucanian rule around 400 BC, and was finally colonized by the Romans in the year of 273 BC. This study aims to connect the tangible traces of history to the intangible feelings for a place and explore how these elements give rise to the psychological process of place attachment. The concept holds and interdisciplinary potential and thus is possible to apply to the ancient material from Poseidonia-Paestum. The Greek agora, the Roman forum and the extramural Sanctuary of Santa Venera is approached and analysed from this perspective. A close reading of previous research on place attachment in combination with the archaeological record from Poseidonia-Paestum has formed the basis for analysing the material. This study has shown that it is possible to contextualize the theoretical framework of place attachment in an ancient material by pointing out the semiotic potency of the material remains from Poseidonia-Paestum. Through this perspective new questions have been raised and interpreted. Ultimately, a deeper understanding of the attitudes and ideas that formed the basis of human actions and decisions in the ancient city of Poseidonia-Paestum has been reached.

Latency period is analysed through cultural material corresponding to this age ( toys, books, cartoons, vidéo games). It appears from the material that latency works up the return of the archaic by suggesting interpretations that have value of « constructions » in the sense of Freud. The question of a transitionnal double is very present and symbolized by the fictionnal pet. The characteristical experience of latency is the feeling of « wonderful strangeness ». The process of symbolization during latency is particular in the way that game induces playing. The notion of a « reciprocal acknowledgement » and finally the main features of latency taken are considered. And then latency is interrogated with three latent children at the mental health center

This thesis traces the steps of creating a projective device for exploring the self-archaic of an adult subject. Its development is the result of several former studies from various groups: adult subjects with no pathology recognized, young psychotic adults and/or borderlines, and adult paraplegic subjects. The device created for this research has evolved into an exploration and mediation tool used for many years as part of my therapeutic group of patients, mostly suffering from identity narcissistic disorders.Photographs of space, mostly taken by the CNRS or NASA with different telescopes, are used a carrier. With these photographs, the visual impact is undeniable. "What does the Universe mean to you?": The use of photographs of various celestial objects as projective medium to respond to a latent question about subjectivity, mobilizes thinking in images and comes to question the sense of self, archaic and current. The photographs offer a representation of native experiences, cosmic metaphors already presented in the psychoanalytic literature (Anzieu and formal signifiers, Aulagnier and the black hole of the psyche... These favor an imaged scene of early interactions. The EPSA device is an "attractor" seeking the projection of an "uncreated" image, an experience in default of symbolization. The EPSA malleability allows the patient to put into shape the uncreated, to tell the story of what he does not know of himself and that haunts him. The subject projects into the EPSA a psychic atmosphere, a trace of an emerging self with an operation that is sometimes problematic, in which appears "processes" of transformation.EPSA explores the reflexive capacities of the subject: the subject ability to be able to develop or not an aesthetic conflict, management and expression of conflict. It is also explores the ability to "reason" emotionally, to be in touch with his emotions, to experience them, to feel oneself, to see oneself, and "to express" his emotions (Three "degrees" of symbolization). The maturity of the archaic self and its expression (emotional maturity of the sense of self) can be defined as the tolerance and acceptance of affects, emotions, and feelings... caused by conflicts to think about oneself. In this way, the subject avoids being "overwhelmed" emotionally and inhibition. The mental and verbal elaboration of conflicts provides for sharing and communication with others.EPSA allows us to observe in adults the relationship in the early stages of development disorders: treatment of affect, early interactions, and disorders due to deficiencies in the tuning... EPSA is an exploration of an important tool in the construction of subjectivity processes, and refines our clinical look on narcissistic identity disorders, borderline condition, and disease of addiction...The EPSA device, which proposes the patient to imagine his impressions, enables the patient to put words to his thoughts. It is a creative space in which we found and create. A symbolizing device which encourages sharing and meeting. It is an "objeu", a therapeutic carrier. Finally, EPSA is a mirror of oneself, and also a tool of "transformation" of symbolization

Анотація:
The purpose of this thesis was to apply mainstream theoretical social psychology to group dynamics in isolated confined extreme (ICE) environments, with a particular focus on the context of long duration spaceflight. This was done by providing a thorough review of both the ICE environment psychology literature and the social psychological literature. From this it emerged that significant gaps existed within the ICE literature around the understanding of group processes. A review of relevant social psychology literature suggested that the social identity perspective may have much to offer in advancing the understanding of group processes in these environments. It was argued that processes related to social identification plays a key role in the team functionality. Of particular note was how social ‘norms’ could influence social identification processes and group functioning. Crew heterogeneity had been cited as a potential concern in much ICE literature, so group norms that related to diversity were investigated. Three theoretical chapters provided a review of space and ICE environment psychology literature, social psychology literature and diversity literature. Five experiments are reported in this thesis. The first, an exploratory field study which study took place during an expedition into the Australian Outback, made general predictions about how social identification might be constrained by the extreme environment context. The study demonstrated that identity processes did indeed influence group functionality, but also that the presence of pro-diversity group norms seemed to have a positive influence. In order to explore this issue in more detail, four studies were conducted. These included a field study at the Mars Desert Research station in Utah, two laboratory studies and a final field study that took place during a winter-over period at the Concordia Research station in Antarctica. Collectively these studies demonstrated that ingroup identification played an important role in driving group functionality in extreme environments. In addition they demonstrated that the presence of a pro-diversity group norm had the potential to increase group identification while also reducing the likelihood of negative outcomes (crew alienation and sub-group conflict). Multilevel Linear Modelling and Social Network Analysis were used in two of the studies and if adopted have the potential to significantly improve the validity of future extreme environment research. By using these techniques in this thesis, the certainty surrounding the research findings was greatly enhanced. Taken together the work of this thesis demonstrated three key points: that mainstream social psychology theory and research has much to offer extreme environment research.; social identification processes play a key role in the group dynamics of people in extreme environments; and that a pro-diversity norm, under certain conditions, can play an important role in maximising group functioning. The contribution of this thesis, then, has implications for the ICE literature as well as the social/organisational literature on group diversity and finally the kind of group culture that should be encouraged in extreme environments.

Negative effects of globalization are visible in the most remote parts of our planet today including human life in the Arctic. The active development of the fuel and energy sector causing environmental problems limits the opportunities for traditional farming and creates a need to change the economic behavior strategies of the indigenous peoples of the North. The attitude to money among the Nenets was studied (N = 150) using the scale of monetary perceptions and behavior (Furnham, 1984). The results of the factor analysis have showed a more fractional structure than in Furnham's studies (1984, 2014) indicating a complex and ambiguous (more diverse) picture of the reflection of money in the economic mind of northern peoples (9 factors). The main trends in the monetary attitudes of the Nenets were identified. They donot put money first in their values, do not use them as a tool of influence on other people, they respect those who know how to save money and do not spend it in vain. At the same time, there is a place for financial anxiety and pessimism, negative feelings related to money. The results should be taken into account in the program for the transformation of the economic behavior of the northern indigenous peoples.

This chapter focuses on E.R. Dodds’s famous book The Greeks and the Irrational (1951), in which he has largely moved on to a more psychologically inflected anthropology. Indeed, in the preface, Dodds warns that the book is not ‘a history of Greek religion or even of Greek religious ideas or feelings’. A famous—one might say notorious—argument in The Greeks and the Irrational is that the archaic Greek’s supposed anxieties and sense of guilt were a product of the tensions between fathers and sons created by the loosening of the old solidarity of the family which imposed absolute obedience. This is an argument that extends a psychological proposition about sons’ feelings for fathers to a proposition about society, thus an instance of the bridge between social psychology and social anthropology.

In her works, Iris Murdoch remained faithful to the traditions of English literature. A Gothic novel that used the archaic mythology of the British Isles: Celtic, Anglo-Saxon, medieval Christian mysticism in the literature of the second half of the twentieth century remained one of the few life-giving sources for the preservation and development of the novel genre, which the writer thought about in her essays. In the later novels The Black Prince (1973), A Word Child (1975) and The Sea, the Sea (1978), Murdoch widely uses Gothic elements to study the psychology the modern man and the problems facing him in society. The article examines in detail the spatio-temporal organization of the neo-Gothic Murdoch novels and the typology of the images of classical villains. Gothic makes Murdoch novels attractive to the general reader and allows her to preach her philosophical views.

In 1901, the Berlin psychologist Otto Abraham published a lengthy study on what he called “das absolute Tonbewußtsein” (absolute tone consciousness), claiming that musical ability is less a natural talent than something learnable—dependent on the imprint of certain tone systems and musical experiences. In place of simple stimulus–response tests, Abraham therefore proposed a completely new method of testing musicality, based on a comprehensive test battery and a detailed questionnaire. This chapter’s investigation of Abraham’s method highlights its underlying epistemology of hearing, with particular attention to the relationship between Abraham’s notion of musicality and his mentor Carl Stumpf’s theory of tone psychology. The chapter then traces later applications of Abraham’s study in the fields of comparative musicology and music education, focusing on testing procedures at the Berlin Phonogramm-Archiv, the Berlin Academy of Music, and, in the shape of U.S. psychologist Carl Seashore’s “measures of musical talent,” American schools and music academies.
