Abstract In 1976, Wulf Schirmer, professor of architectural history at the University of Karlsruhe (TH), followed Heinrich Klotz as editor of the architectura and headed the editorial team until 2002. During this time, the journal developed into an open forum for the most diverse forms of research in architectural history – chronologically from the ruins of the 4th millennium BC to the architecture of the late 20th century, topographically from Europe, the Mediterranean, Mesopotamia, Asia and Russia to North and South America, and methodologically from architectural research to art history, architectural theory and the preservation of historical monuments.

The paper covers the work of international forums held by the Architectural Institute of Japan since 2009, which were dedicated to expert discussion and conceptual design of historic cities in the Silk Road system. The article considers the results of the forum, which was first held in Russia (Samara and Moscow) with a parallel workshop for students of domestic and foreign universities. The purpose of the forum is to preserve a unique architectural heritage; to evaluate lessons of the historical environment; to work out the concepts for regeneration and effective development of stagnating historic areas of the Silk Road cities on the example of Samara.

AbstractThomas Jefferson coined the image of the academical village for the university-campus. Whereupon the word village can be translated into the German expression ›Dorf‹ (village) as well as ›Gemeinde‹ (community). Thus the place and people, who enliven their surroundings, are an integral part of the campus. This metaphor gathers the cultural imprint of the campus as an ideal environment for learning as well as its incorporated imaginations. This article follows the question, if the buildings of a university can be seen as a result of the social structures of the academical village. Perhaps they were intended from the beginning on as a production of these social configurations. Therefore this paper wants to inquire specifically into the expressiveness of architecture in the specific case of the early Saarbrücken campus planning of the Universität des Saarlandes. The field of tension university shall be approached as a topic between representative institution and architectural manifestation.

This project represents the search for an architecture within the physical, historical, and political situation that an existing city presents. Set within the physical bounds of Savannah, it builds upon an understanding of the city as a series of Utopian propositions existing subliminally and often incongruously. As such, the project concerns the making of public space--space to relieve the culturally disjointed condition of modern urban life by acting as a sort of stage for creative expression and collective improvisation. This also involves the making of characteristic places, which by energetically acknowledging, confronting, challenging, or amplifying the cityâ s conceptions of itself, have the potential to generate both physical and metaphysical transformations. Furthermore, in response to urban development paradigms that are either senselessly uncoordinated or mechanistically authoritarian, the project proposes an alternative: the structured interweaving of a â civic layerâ of these generative urban centers, each serving a different part of the city. The centers must function architecturally as the symbols and containers of civic life, providing space and programmatic flexibility to allow for open cultural engagement while aesthetically enlivening the urban fabric and serving collectively as an index to the city at large.

In the current building of the museum only street part and middle wing of first floor were significantly changed. In the space of a former cinema was placed the Music Theatre. The extension of street is part of the newly designed building SEFO. New public space is above the underground part of the building. This public space covers upper part of the building, which contain new exhibition spaces for museum. Open street part of new building is the main concept of the design.

The presented diploma thesis was elaborated as an architectural study of a Central European Forum in Olomouc (SEFO). Campus SEFO will be created as an reconstruction of the Museum of Modern Art (MUO) in Denis street and building in a neighboring vacant lot. The proposal involves urban, architectural, operational layout, design and material solutions objects in spatial context. Within SEFO and MUO they are created each operation - stand-alone units. Objects SEFO and MUO are interconnected. It is necessary to respect the separation of publicly accessible areas of compartments accessible only by employees. Architectural study includes space for exhibitions, library, multi-purpose space with facilities, vestibule usable for exhibition openings and other cultural activities, chamber music performances, as well as facilities for education, technological facilities of the building, the depositary (transport and central), photo studio restoration studio, office space, locker rooms and restrooms personnel. SEFO specific aim of capturing the diverse manifestations of visual culture of Central Europe after World War 2, the building's permanent exhibition, acquisition activity, temporary exhibitions, including larger medium-shows (eg. The biennial or triennial), discussion forums and other supporting cultural events.

Higher education and online discussions are an integral part of collaboratively based e-Learning systems. However, there problems can be associated with current online discussion models. For example, it can be easy to set open-ended discussions which attract little participation and to assess contributions can be difficult or time-consuming. Students may not achieve the expected learning outcomes without proper structure and management in online discussions. This paper proposes to design and implement a discussion forum object to function within the architectural constraints of an existing Oss learning management system (to meet target user requirements) that is a web-based environment for online discussions where the facilitator can structure each discussion according to its nature and where learning requirements are using already designed templates.

This research began with an exploration of the phenomenon of cultural conflict and fusion in the process of architectural modernization in Taiwan. It will examine the impact of modern and contemporary theories on the practice of architecture of the island. It will then seek out the essence of Chinese classical architecture in order to develop an approach for the development of the future Chinese/Taiwanese architecture. In addition, the findings of the study could serve as a reference for scholars who would pursue historical and theoretical studies of in the subject, or for architects who are seeking design concepts to enhance their projects. The study utilizes an interpretive-historical methodology. It emphasizes that researchers should investigate social phenomena within broader and more complex contexts of what to uncover the underlying cultural factors. To highlight their significance, the author will pursue a hypothetic project to examine and demonstrate the meaningfulness and applicability of the concepts learned from the research. Efforts were made to discover ways in which Taiwanese and Chinese architectural culture can deal with foreign influences, such that it will be able to enjoy the benefits of modernization while maintaining its unique character and identity. Moreover, it will attempt to uncover ways in which Chinese architecture can in fact influence the global contemporary architectural culture. Finally, it is hoped that this work will produce a useful reference for students, scholars and architects who wish to develop design projects that reflect and celebrate regional cultures.

AbstractIn the context of contemporary environment and society, the architectural form optimization based on Environmental performance-driven design is a method by using environmental performance data to optimize the architectural form. Its value lies in dealing with the interaction between architecture and environment, and developing architecture with environmental sustainability. This thesis summarizes the similarities and differences between performance-driven form design and traditional bionic form design. The traditional bionic design separates the bionic object from its complex living environment, and its simple imitation tends to fall into the local rather than the global optimum. However, performance-driven design is different from bionic design. It advocates environmental factors as a driving factor rather than a confrontational factor. It is a systematic global optimal method for studying architectural form. This paper puts forward the specific architectural form optimization simulation process based on the performance-driven thought. Taking the multilayer parking building design of the riparian zone on the south bank of Chongqing as an example, the parametric design method is used to obtain architectural optimization form adapted to the environment.

This research sought to distill and define the fundamentals of system and software architecture analysis and form the basis by which a design can be tested and analyzed prior to its implementation. In short, the question "can a design be measured against the business-level objectives and quality-of-use architectural requirements. The research focuses on building a body of knowledge that supports an analysis, built on fundamentals which scales and can serve as the basis by which we can transform when and how architecture validation can occur. This research supports ongoing work towards developing a strategic comprehensive architecture approach and extends the analysis and documentation of the Key Business Drivers (KBDs) and architectural drivers supporting the efficient development and sustainment of interoperable aviation mission systems. A prototype process that leverages the discovered relationships and weights for use by current Architects and Senior Systems Engineers is shown. Programs implementing this approach are expected to benefit from the planned reuse of architectural artifacts for follow up systems engineering products supporting the development of reusable component product lines avoiding the long-term challenges of unrealized architectural objectives.

The Army is pivoting to meet the challenges of a rapidly evolving threat environment in an increasingly complex world; this requires an agile and adaptive capability, leveraging competition, while operating within the constraints of current budget cycles. A cross cutting architectural approach provides opportunity for the Army to maintain capability overmatch. Recent changes in acquisition law and Army modernization strategy bring particularly strong emphasis on adoption of Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) and Open Systems Architecture (OSA). Many current programs within Army Aviation rely on a best effort approach ("Do MOSA") to deliver systems. Current programs measure success on cost, performance, and schedule of the individual program with little historical institutional support for aligning efforts across a larger "whole-system" context, such as a Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB). Specific programs, including the Utility Helicopter Program Office (UHPO) UH-60V and Crew Mission Station (CMS), as well as multiple Science & Technology (S&T) programs supporting Future Vertical Lift (FVL) such as the Mission Systems Architecture Demonstration (MSAD), that exhibit aspects of the architectural momentum in the Army enterprise. The recommendation of our team is to develop an Army Aviation Enterprise Architecture Strategy that will provide the detail necessary in order to develop individual product lines while providing synergy in architecture related efforts into a holistic approach maintaining focus on Army Aviation as a whole force in support of and integrated with the ground commander.

Specific Objectives and Related Results: 1) Determine the effect of phosphorus availability on ethylene production by roots. Test the hypothesis that phosphorus availability regulates ethylene production Clear differences were found between the two plants that were studied. In beans ethylene production is affected by P nutrition, tissue type, and stage of development. There are genotypic differences in the rate of ethylene production by various root types and in the differential in ethylene production when P treatments are compared. The acceleration in ethylene production with P deficiency increases with time. These findings support the hypothesis that ethylene production may be enhanced by phosphorus deficiency, and that the degree of enhancement varies with genotype. In tomatoes the low-P level did not enhance significantly ethylene production by the roots. Wildtype cultivars and ethylene insensitive mutants behaved similarly in that respect. 2) Characterize the effects of phosphorus availability and ethylene on the architecture of whole root systems. Test the hypothesis that both ethylene and low phosphorus availability modify root architecture. In common bean, the basal roots give rise to a major fraction of the whole root system. Unlike other laterals these roots respond to gravitropic stimulation. Their growth angle determines the proportion of the root length in the shallow layers of the soil. A correlation between ethylene production and basal root angle was found in shallow rooted but not deep-rooted genotypes, indicating that acceleration of ethylene synthesis may account for the change in basal root angle in genotypes demonstrating a plastic response to P availability. Short-time gravitropic response of the tap roots of young bean seedlings was not affected by P level in the nutrient solution. Low phosphorus specifically increases root hair length and root hair density in Arabidopsis. We tested 7 different mutants in ethylene perception and response and in each case, the response to low P was lower than that of the wild-type. The extent of reduction in P response varied among the mutants, but every mutant retained some responsiveness to changes in P concentration. The increase in root hair density was due to the increase in the number of trichoblast cell files under low P and was not mediated by ethylene. Low P did not increase the number of root hairs forming from atrichoblasts. This is in contrast to ethylene treatment, which increased the number of root hairs partly by causing root hairs to form on atrichoblasts. 3) Assess the adaptive value of root architectural plasticity in response to phosphorus availability. A simulation study indicated that genetic variation for root architecture in common bean may be related to adaptation to diverse competitive environments. The fractal dimension of tomato root system was directly correlated with P level.

This paper provides an overview and assessment of reform initiatives, both those currently on the table and those that are not but should be. The intent is to clarify the logic behind these proposals and assess them from a Latin American perspective. For each core initiative examined in this paper, whether currently on the table or proposed for consideration, the authors first identify which of the main distortions, identified in the companion paper, it addresses. The overall conclusion is that the current approach to reforming the international financial architecture is not appropriate for the task and a paradigm shift is required. This paper was presented at the Tenth International Forum on Latin American Perspectives in Paris, November 25-26, 1999.

West-central Yukon and eastern Alaska are characterized by widespread metamorphic rocks that form part of the allochthonous, composite Yukon-Tanana terrane and parautochthonous North American margin. Structural windows through the Yukon-Tanana terrane expose parautochthonous North American margin in that broad region, particularly as mid-Cretaceous extensional core complexes. Both the Yukon-Tanana terrane and parautochthonous North American margin share the same Late Devonian history, making their discrimination difficult; however, distinct post-Late Devonian magmatic and metamorphic histories assist in discriminating Yukon-Tanana terrane from parautochthonous North American margin rocks. The suture between Yukon-Tanana terrane and parautochthonous North American margin is obscured by many episodes of high-strain deformation. Their main bounding structure is probably a Jurassic to Cretaceous thrust, which has been locally reactivated as a mid-Cretaceous extensional shear zone. Crustal-scale structures within composite Yukon-Tanana terrane (e.g. the Yukon River shear zone) are commonly marked by discontinuous mafic-ultramafic complexes. Some of these complexes represent orogenic peridotites that were structurally exhumed into the Yukon-Tanana terrane in the Middle Permian.

This document reviews the potential macroeconomic effects of issuing a central bank digital currency (CBDC) for the use of individuals and businesses. A careful selection of the architecture, and the economic and technological design aspects of this digital form of central bank money that best suit the needs of Colombian economy is made to frame the analytical approach used to study these issues. The most salient results of the related literature are reviewed to establish the consequences of undertaking this initiative. For the set of selected assumptions, we find that the expected macroeconomic consequences are negligible.

This document seeks to identify multiple risks to infrastructure and people and encourages open dialogue for creative solutions. Designers and engineers as well as other disciplines can work together to achieve higher resiliency in both new and renovated work. The following sections are created to provide a starting guide, utilizing various tools to discover the best resilient design strategies for your building. This special report will argue for actionable design strategies; drawing inspiration from historical building forms, while also looking toward emerging technologies that should be further explored.

It is important to monitor the locations of population growth within our nation as it has profound e!ects on our economic e!ectiveness, environmental sustainability, and our overall public health. This atlas updates the article “Suburban Nation? Estimating the size of Canada’s suburban population”, published in the Journal of Architecture and Planning Research (Gordon & Janzen 2013). The JAPR article was based upon 2006 census data, while this paper updates the research using the 2021 census data that was released late 2022. This atlas also replaces and updates the Council for Canadian Urbanism Working Paper #2, “Still Suburban: Growth in Canadian Suburbs, 2016-2016."

Age dependent programs are responsible for the physiological and developmental differences of young and mature plants. These include a range of morphological characters such as leaf shape and leaf composition (waxes, lignin etc..) but also different in developmental potentials. Apical buds of juvenile plants are vegetative, while those of mature plants can be reproductive. Likewise, basal buds form in the axills of juvenile leaves have different fates than distal buds formed in the axils of mature leaves. The goal of our joint project is to understand and exploit theses age related programs for specific improvement of crop plants. To that end both the WIS group and the PGEC group are using mutants with age related defects as well as modified expression of miR156 to modify age related programs in crop plants- Tomato and potato in Israel and Maize, switchgrass and Brchipodium in the US. In the US, major effort were made to: Characterize the contribution of selected miR156 target genes to yield component traits of maize. Functional analysis of microRNAs and their targets in new crop plants. In Israel, the research progressed in several directions: Understanding the interplay between age dependent programs and the potential of tomato and potato meristems to produce tubers. Evaluation of the agronomic value of mutants that alter flowering regime in side shoots in general, and in the sympodial buds in particular Characterization of wild type axillary buds, comparing shoot ontogeny of gradually maturing apices from basal and distal positions along the main shoot of tomato.
