This study aims to develop an efficient planning concept for office space by a projected organisation of social space. The article shows a principle of developing the functional design of an architectural structure and methods of its subsequent assessment. The study was carried out using the example of a section under reconstruction in an industrial building for the functions of a co-working centre. The methods included analysis and acquisition of data on the design of co-working centres with the subse-quent topological analysis of references. This allowed the structure of connections between the ele-ments allocated in space and the functional content of the room to be determined. Based on the ob-tained data, the options for design solutions targeting an office building were formed. For their analy-sis, the tools of space syntax were applied. To visualise the efficiency of the "work" and "rest" pro-cesses, comparative graphs of their behaviour were built, as well as a scheme for evacuation proce-dures. These graphs were used to compile the most effective design concepts. Tracing user routes through human flow simulations revealed vulnerabilities in supply chains and the structure of the ongo-ing social process. The graphs exhibited multiple peak values, meaning that necessary functional zones are missing. After eliminating these vulnerabilities, the built graphs of the key process show an increase of 17% in the level of social efficiency. The evacuation procedures also showed the efficien-cy of the developed layout concepts in reducing the total time for evacuating users. The most effective solution was to locate recreation areas with high attendance in the most accessible places in the framework of an architectural structure.

Osiągnięcia architektury Ameryki Południowej początku XXI w. postawiły architektów tego kontynentu w światowej czołówce w zakresie innowacyjnych i nieortodoksyjnych rozwiązań projektowych. W zasadzie „przyrostowości” (ang. incrementality) wielu widzi podstawy nowych, społecznie zrównoważonych metod projektowania dla architektury przyszłości. Celem artykułu jest analiza przydatności i uniwersalności centralnej cechy niektórych najbardziej docenianych projektów „przyrostowych”, jaką jest umiejętne wprowadzenie procesów nieformalnych (m.in. partycypacji) w silnie sformalizowany i zinstytucjonalizowany proces projektowy. Do analizy projektów i ich szerokiego kontekstu zastosowany jest aparat pojęciowy zapożyczony z teorii postmodernizmu w architekturze i sztuce (szczególnie prac Christophera Alexandra i George’a Dickiego). Pozwala on wyróżnić podobieństwa i fundamentalne różnice między kulturami architektonicznymi oraz przybliżyć odpowiedź na pytanie o możliwość naśladownictwa projektów powstałych w zupełnie innych kulturach w kontekście polskim i europejskim. Incremental architecture and problems of the imitation of informal architectural solutions The achievements of South American architecture of the early twenty-first century have put the architects of this continent at the forefront in the field of innovative and unorthodox design solutions. Many see the basics of new, socially sustainable design methods for the architecture of the future in the principle of incrementality. The purpose of the paper is to analyse the usefulness and universality of the central feature of some of the most appreciated incremental projects, which is the skilful introduction of informal processes (including participation) into a highly formalised and institutionalised design environment. To analyse the projects and their broad context, a conceptual apparatus was used, as applied in the theory of Postmodernism in architecture and art (especially the works of Christopher Alexander and George Dickie). It allows to highlight similarities and fundamental differences between architectural cultures and to take a step closer to answer the question of the possibility of imitating designs created in completely different cultures in the Polish and European context.

Many architects and designers coincide that fabric structures have an imperative role to play in creating an ecofriendly future. In recent years, the use of smart textiles has been particularly popular in the construction practices. These are hailed as environmentally friendly, deliberated as architecturally aesthetic and are usually cost effective. There is a growing demand for hybrid textile materials that combine strength and functionality in a lightweight product at a competitive price. These materials are developed with advanced technical interventions. This paper aims to conceptualize the idea of using smart textiles in the interior architecture to ensure sustainability by replacing the conventional architectural finishes. The use of smart textiles that fetches the possibilities offered by both textile and interior design in the present world has been highlighted with examples. Studies illustrate that the use of smart textile materials have several benefits in the built environment in terms of weight, transparency, adaptability, indoor climate, atmosphere and acoustics. Examples are taken from the superlative case studies from all across the world. The research combines the versatile information and explores the diversity of smart textiles, presenting a framework of future prospects for the utilization of the materials in the modern interior design concepts.

This study combines historical and quantitative methods to determine the market response to a major nineteenth century American urban architectural form-the speculatively built row house. The paper estimates a hedonic price index which decomposes the original purchase price of the row house into a set of prices for the characteristics of the house, including detailed architectural features. In turn, the estimated prices for the architectural features reveal the market's response to the aesthetic design. With more than 3,500 row houses, its tree-lined streets, and scattered parks, Boston's South End is the largest Victorian residential district remaining in the United States. The homogeneity of the brick bowfront row house form, coupled with the variety of architectural features, provides an unusual opportunity to test the effect of architecture on market values. We find that variables for lot size, house size, and location within the neighborhood explain 74 percent of the price of a row house. Architectural style and features account for an additional 14 percent of the price of the house and are more highly valued when they differentiate a row house from its neighbors. These are significant results, for they provide systematic statistical evidence that architectural design matters in the marketplace. Paolo Tombesi sets out a very interesting thesis that Asia will become the ‘back office’ of Western design practice in, ‘A true south for design? The new international division of labour in architecture’ (arq 5/2, pp.171–180). There are many instances of this happening already, though mainly in engineering and in US style architectural practice where documentation consists of the application of rules-based methods and the work used to be done by ‘tracers’. Practices with computer-based standard detailing can have schematic drawings worked up overnight and corrections similarly serviced. UK architectural practice is largely done without back offices or standard solutions and drafting help must be closely supervised. Price competition from the South may well become a factor for change.

Este artículo persigue una amplificación de la comprensión de las técnicas de arquitectura, vinculándolas a una “ecología de lo invisible”: la atención prestada a variables cualitativas existentes en el contexto, apenas perceptibles y a menudo desestimadas por los regímenes de valor asentados. Este proceder –que podría ser rastreado en el diseño arquitectónico a lo largo de la historia– ha adquirido un valor nuevo, tras la crisis económico-financiera, como crítica a los modelos de desarrollo que dominaron en el cambio de siglo, lo cual también dificulta su comprensión. Para aclarar este punto, se analizan sus claves en tres proyectos fechados en los años precedentes a la crisis: la propuesta de Cedric Price para el concurso Design of Cities en Manhattan (1998), la remodelación de la plaza Léon Aucoc (1996) y la Escuela de Administración de Empresas (2006), ambas en Burdeos, de Lacaton & Vassal. Si los dos primeros han sido leídos como formas de “no intervención”, asociados a una renuncia a diseñar y construir, el tercero escapa a esta lectura, lo cual nos ayudará a reconsiderarlos en clave propositiva. La metodología de análisis se fija en los proyectos y en cómo han sido mediados en diversos canales y para diferentes públicos, desde las revistas especializadas a las “imágenes pobres” compartidas en las aplicaciones web de servidores de mapas. In this paper, a new methodology to compare the robustness of sensor structures employed in radiofrequency design for test (RF DFT) architectures for RF integrated circuits (ICs) is proposed. First, the yield loss and defect level of the test technique is evaluated using a statistical model of the Circuit under Test (obtained through non-parametric statistics and copula theory). Then, by carrying out the dispersion analysis of the sensor architecture, a figure of merit is established. This methodology reduces the number of iterations in the design flow of RF DFT sensors and makes it possible to evaluate process dispersion. The case study is a SiGe:C BiCMOS LNA tested by a single-probe measurement.

Houses are fascinating because they seem to occupy a pivotal position in the spectrum of human construction. They are, perhaps, located right on the watershed between what is generally understood as ‘architecture’ and what is considered as just ‘building’. They allow us to probe the very definition of what architecture is perceived to be. Using the typology of the dwelling - and three examples from three architectural practices - we examine differing responses to context, climate and the vernacular, documenting and evaluating commonalities and differentials in design approaches. The examples are a holiday home in Dungeness by NORD, an artists’ residence and studio on Loch Fyne by GMA and a house on the Isle of Lewis by studioKAP.

La ricerca propone una riflessione sull’architettura contemporanea in funzione del ruolo sempre più preponderante che le tecnologie digitali hanno assunto all’interno del processo progettuale. L'introduzione dei computer nel panorama dell'architettura ha prodotto una rivoluzione nei metodi e nei processi progettuali che contribuiscono alla generazione della forma architettonica. Si è osservato che l'uso pervasivo dei software ha contribuito a modificare sostanzialmente il linguaggio architettonico. Obiettivo della tesi è capire in che modo l'espressività dell'architettura si è modificata e si sta modificando, quanto pervasivo sia l'uso del computer e quali possano essere gli sviluppi futuri. La ricerca è stata condotta attraverso un'analisi di 60 casi di studio scelti tra architetture di riconosciuta qualità, realizzati negli ultimi quindici anni e in cui l'influsso degli strumenti digitali sia fortemente evidente. I casi di studio sono stati studiati e classificati secondo una struttura teorica, composta da diverse categorie e parametri, che consente di analizzare aspetti singoli e generali. I risultati suggeriscono che una nuova era sta arrivando: il punto di partenza concettuale degli architetti nasce spesso nello spazio digitale, sfruttando le aumentate capacità di rappresentazione nel controllare e manipolare le forme. A partire da un'interpretazione critica dei risultati, si definiscono alcune tendenze trasversali in cui è possibile classificare l'architettura contemporanea digitale.
The research concerns the field of the contemporary architecture evolution related to the increasingly massive use of digital technologies in the design process. The introduction of computers in architecture has produced a real revolution in design methods and processes, which contribute to the generation of architectural shape. It was understood that the pervasive use of software has substantially altered the architectural language in the last years. Therefore, main goal of the research has been to understand how architectural expressivity is changing, how much pervasive are digital influences on architectural design and which may be future developments. The research is carried out through the development of an analytical database with sixty recent case studies, recognized digital influenced architectures, as expression of what is really happening inside architectural scenario. The case studies have been studied and classified according to a logical theoretical framework, consisting of different categories and parameters, that allows to analyze several aspects. The results suggest that a new era is coming, where the conceptual starting point of designers is often born in the digital space, taking advantage of the augmented representation skills to control and manipulate form. Starting from a critical interpretation of the results, we have identified some transversal trends, representative of contemporary digital architecture.

Les architectes doivent faire face à des transformations constantes. Nos projets doivent s’adapter aux usages de demain. Mais comment pouvons-nous concevoir ces métamorphoses ?A contrario de l’espace enseigné en architecture, l’angle de cette recherche est le temps : il faudrait apprendre à insuffler le passage du temps dans les projets, afin de les rendre malléables au changement. L’architecte pourrait jouer avec le temps, en l’apprivoisant et le tissant dans son projet.Comme l’espace, le temps est un mot primitif impossible à définir. De nombreux philosophes, historiens et scientifiques en ont pourtant décrit les qualités, comme Henri Bergson dépeignant la « réalité mobile », Georg Friedrich Hegel « le rythme du tout organique » ou encore Reinhart Koselleck le « futur passé ». Et si peu d’architectes s’y sont confrontés, un Britannique s’est démarqué des autres dans les années 1960. La société était en pleine transformation, les théories des modernes renversées par la critique. À la recherche d’une architecture en accord avec sa période, Cedric Price a pris le temps comme un paramètre de conception. Ses structures radicales constituent des cas d’études propices à ce décryptage conceptuel. Dans les allers-retours entre les textes philosophiques et les visions de l’architecte, trois caractères du temps se sont dégagés : la mobilité, le rythme, le présent. Six projets des années 1960 à 1980 ont été étudiés en fonction de ces thématiques, avec l’appui des archives du Centre Canadien d’Architecture de Montréal.La thèse dévoile six « jeux du temps » : ceux du renouvellement et de l’opportunité, de l’obsolescence et de l’immédiateté planifiées, de la distorsion consciente et de l’incertitude calculée. Les mots sont propres à Cedric Price et ils témoignent de son expérience singulière au temps, comme du contexte de l’époque. Sur chacun, les approches temporelles ont été croisées avec les images des quatorze catégories de sa dernière exposition Mean time, offrant un lexique illustré. Réunis en trois grandes parties, ils révèlent le passage entre le temps du monde et celui de l’architecture : de la « réalité mobile » au mobile, du tempo du milieu au temporaire, du présent à la présence. Les diagrammes utilisés par l’architecte y sont respectivement décryptés comme des moyens d’attraper, créer et raconter le temps. Et ainsi en est-il aussi des architectures produites. Car au fil de la recherche, il est apparu qu’elles étaient avant tout des cadres pour saisir le changement. Ce sont des dispositifs flexibles et ouverts. Sans forme, ils se per-forment. Ils s’affirment comme des processus.Cette conception n’entraine pas une esthétique forte et unique mais des expériences esthétiques, révélant les interactions ordinaires de l’homme et de l’environnement à l’architecture. Face à l’incertitude qu’entraine l’inévitable passage du temps, l’architecture peut cultiver les « délices de l’inconnu », comme aimait le dire Cedric Price. La thèse en propose des variations avec des réalisations du début XXème, de l’avant-garde des années 1960 à 1980 et d’aujourd’hui. Des ouvertures sont proposées avec l’architecture japonaise, dont les paysages artificiels dévoilent une même attention à l’impermanence et complètent les théâtres de Cedric Price.Les six jeux du temps proposés sont des guides pour apprivoiser le temps et le vivre, et non le maitriser ou le subir. Architects have to face constant transformations. Our projects must adapt themselves to the uses of tomorrow. But how can we perceive theses metamorphosis?In contrast to space taught in architecture, the angle of this research is time: it would be needed to learn to inject the passage of time in projects, in order to make them malleable to change. The architect could play with time by taming and forging it in its project.Just as space, time is a primitive world impossible to define. However, numerous philosophers, historians and scientists have described its qualities, like Henri Bergson painting the “mobile reality”, Georg Friedrich Hegel “the rhythm of the organic whole” or yet Reinhart Koselleck the “past future”. And if few architects confronted themselves with it, one British stood out from the others in the 1960’s. The society was rapidly transforming, the moderns’ theories turned down by the critique. Seeking an architecture in agreement with its period, Cedric Price took time as a factor of conception. Its radical structures make up suitable study cases for this conceptual deciphering. Going back and forth between the philosophical texts and the architect views, three characteristics of the time emerged: the mobility, the rhythm, the present. Six projects from between 1960 and 1980 have been studied in accordance with these themes, with the support from the archives of the Canadian Centre for Architecture of Montréal.The thesis unveils six “time designs”: those of renewal and opportunity, planned obsolescence and immediacy, conscious distortion and calculated uncertainty. The words are proper to Cedric Price and they show its singular experience with time, as well as the context of this period. On each, the temporal approaches have been crossed with the pictures of the fourteen categories of his last exhibition Mean time, giving an illustrated lexical. Reunited in three big sections, they reveal the passage between the time of the world and the one of the architecture: from the “mobile reality” to the mobile, from the tempo from the middle to the temporary, from the present to the presence. The diagrams used by the architect are respectively deciphered as means to catch, create and narrate time. Thus, that’s how is the produced architectures too. Indeed, it appeared along the research that they were firstly settings to understand change. They are flexible and open plans. Without form, they per-form themselves. They assert themselves as processes.This concept does not produce a strong and unique aesthetics but aesthetic experiences, revealing the ordinary interactions of the man and the environment to architecture. Faced with the uncertainty that produces the unavoidable passage of time, architecture can cultivate the “joys of the unknown”, as Cedric Price liked to say. The thesis suggests some variations with realizations from the early twentieth century, the avant-garde of the years 1960 to 1980 and today. Openings are proposed with the Japanese architecture, of which the artificial landscapes unveil the same attention to impermanence and complete Cedric Price theatres.The six time games suggested are guides to tame time and live it, and not control or suffer it. They illustrate ways of designing with time, of different intensities. Then it is up to the creators to try it, by coming up too with their own architectures of impermanence

Variations in ionospheric plasma density can cause large amplitude and phase changes in the radio waves passing through this region. Ionospheric weather can have detrimental effects on several communication systems, including radars, navigation systems such as the Global Positioning Sytem (GPS), and high-frequency communications. As a result, creating models of the ionospheric density is of paramount interest to scientists working in the field of satellite communication. Numerous empirical and theoretical models have been developed to study the upper atmosphere climatology and weather. Multiple measurements of plasma density over a region are of marked importance while creating these models. The lack of spatially distributed observations in the upper atmosphere is currently a major limitation in space weather research. A constellation of CubeSat platforms would be ideal to take such distributed measurements. The use of miniaturized instruments that can be accommodated on small satellites, such as CubeSats, would be key to acheiving these science goals for space weather. The accepted instrumentation techniques for measuring the electron density are the Langmuir probes and the Plasma Impedance Probe (PIP). While Langmuir probes are able to provide higher resolution measurements of relative electron density, the Plasma Impedance Probes provide absolute electron density measurements irrespective of spacecraft charging. The central goal of this dissertation is to develop an integrated architecture for the PIP that will enable space weather research from CubeSat platforms. The proposed PIP chip integrates all of the major analog and mixed-signal components needed to perform swept-frequency impedance measurements. The design's primary innovation is the integration of matched Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADC) on a single chip for sampling the probes current and voltage signals. A Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is performed by an off-chip Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) to compute the probes impedance. This provides a robust solution for determining the plasma impedance accurately. The major analog errors and parametric variations affecting the PIP instrument and its effect on the accuracy and precision of the impedance measurement are also studied. The system clock is optimized in order to have a high performance ADC. In this research, an alternative clock generation scheme using C-elements is described to reduce the timing jitter and reference spurs in phase locked loops. While the jitter performance and reference spur reduction is comparable with prior state-of-the-art work, the proposed Phase Locked Loop (PLL) consumes less power with smaller area than previous designs.

This diploma thesis applies the principles of systemic thinking to the current web design process. It focuses on dealing with the issues related to conflicts and diversity of opinions among individual members of the team working on web design. In the practical part, the team responsible for web design is viewed as a soft complex system, to which Checklands soft system methodology is applied as a problem-solving tool.

For the last four decades, the semiconductor industry has experienced an exponential growth. According to the ITRS, as we advance into the era of nanotechnology, the traditional CMOS electronics is reaching its physical and economical limits. The main objective of this thesis is to explore novel design opportunities for reconfigurable architectures given by the emerging technologies. On the one hand, the thesis will focus on the traditional FPGA architecture scheme, and survey some structural improvements brought by disruptive technologies. While the memories and routing structures occupy the major part of the FPGAs total area and mainly limit the performances, 3-D integration appears as a good candidate to embed all this circuitry into the metal layers. Configuration and routing circuits based on back-end compatible resistive memories, a monolithic 3-D process flow and a prospective vertical FETs process flow are introduced and assessed within a complete architectural context. On the other hand, the thesis will present some novel architectural schemes for ultra-fine grain computing. The size of the logic elements can be reduced thanks to inherent properties of the technologies, such as the crossbar organization or the controllable polarity of carbon electronics. Considering the granularity of the logic elements, specific fixed and incomplete interconnection topologies are required to prevent the large overhead of a configurable interconnection pattern. To evaluate the potentiality of this new architectural scheme, a specific benchmarking flow will be presented in order to explore the ultra-fine grain architectural design space.

How can reimagining the way we light our cities prove to be the urban catalyst to meet targets set out in the Paris Climate Agreement? In this Master Thesis, I question how restructuring our urban lighting can provide enormous benefits for not only reducing our energy consumption and becoming more efficient societies, but also support social interaction in shaping our cities for the future. The aspects pertaining to urban lighting and its influence on our environment have been organised into economy, political and urban evolution (social) categories, as a way to dissect and appreciate lights associated role in shaping our societies. Seeking sustainable strategies to meet urgent energy targets and urban development initiatives, are no longer optional but necessary. However, even with this undisputed need for change, particularly within urban lighting, approaches taken are still very much sequestered from general understanding and lack cross-disciplinary cooperation. Extensive publications, works and teachings from lighting designers, as well as currently adopted policies from government bodies and international case studies have been considered, in order to understand current strategies adopted and their potential co-operation for a future holistic strategy in tackling climate change as well as apparent inequalities in our urban environments.

This dissertation Barrier-free Work Environment examines and emphasizes some elements, which are projected and will be projected even more into architectural production – architect’s work. Buildings designed specially to create a working environment accessible for disabled people are of a current interest and they will become a very prominent subject of social development in the future, because it will be necessary to react sensitively to the disproportions in human abilities and in the society’s capability to create new workplaces, implement progressive technologies, computer systems, and last but not least, to react to new possibilities of people’s creative invention. This thesis is based on the key definitions for this topic – the terms health and handicap. It is aimed at the ethics of communication in a society and its perception by a person with some kind of disability – handicap. This thesis also analyzes the limits of human possibilities in the context of contemporary and future progressive technologies. The topic of accessible workplaces necessarily derives from the historical development of workplaces, and it indicates the future trends of development. An important part of this thesis is concerned with the conditions for creating a friendly working environment, not only from the aspect of the construction itself, but mainly by the interior design, its flexible furniture, and special work tools not only for the handicapped. This dissertation and its contribution to the scholarly research are based on evaluation of an opinion survey, whose respondents were companies employing handicapped people. The analysis and consequent synthesis of the answers given by the employers of the disadvantaged people brought pieces of information, which are summarized in conclusions and recommendations.

AbstractVirtual memory is an essential mechanism for enforcing security boundaries, but its relaxed-memory concurrency semantics has not previously been investigated in detail. The concurrent systems code managing virtual memory has been left on an entirely informal basis, and OS and hypervisor verification has had to make major simplifying assumptions.We explore the design space for relaxed virtual memory semantics in the Armv8-A architecture, to support future system-software verification. We identify many design questions, in discussion with Arm; develop a test suite, including use cases from the pKVM production hypervisor under development by Google; delimit the design space with axiomatic-style concurrency models; prove that under simple stable configurations our architectural model collapses to previous “user” models; develop tooling to compute allowed behaviours in the model integrated with the full Armv8-A ISA semantics; and develop a hardware test harness.This lays out some of the main issues in relaxed virtual memory bringing these security-critical systems phenomena into the domain of programming-language semantics and verification with foundational architecture semantics.

AbstractComputing relies on architecture specifications to decouple hardware and software development. Historically these have been prose documents, with all the problems that entails, but research over the last ten years has developed rigorous and executable-as-test-oracle specifications of mainstream architecture instruction sets and “user-mode” concurrency, clarifying architectures and bringing them into the scope of programming-language semantics and verification. However, the system semantics, of instruction-fetch and cache maintenance, exceptions and interrupts, and address translation, remains obscure, leaving us without a solid foundation for verification of security-critical systems software.In this paper we establish a robust model for one aspect of system semantics: instruction fetch and cache maintenance for ARMv8-A. Systems code relies on executing instructions that were written by data writes, e.g. in program loading, dynamic linking, JIT compilation, debugging, and OS configuration, but hardware implementations are often highly optimised, e.g. with instruction caches, linefill buffers, out-of-order fetching, branch prediction, and instruction prefetching, which can affect programmer-observable behaviour. It is essential, both for programming and verification, to abstract from such microarchitectural details as much as possible, but no more. We explore the key architecture design questions with a series of examples, discussed in detail with senior Arm staff; capture the architectural intent in operational and axiomatic semantic models, extending previous work on “user-mode” concurrency; make these models executable as test oracles for small examples; and experimentally validate them against hardware behaviour (finding a bug in one hardware device). We thereby bring these subtle issues into the mathematical domain, clarifying the architecture and enabling future work on system software verification.

AbstractMemory safety bugs continue to be a major source of security vulnerabilities in our critical infrastructure. The CHERI project has proposed extending conventional architectures with hardware-supported capabilities to enable fine-grained memory protection and scalable compartmentalisation, allowing historically memory-unsafe C and C++ to be adapted to deterministically mitigate large classes of vulnerabilities, while requiring only minor changes to existing system software sources. Arm is currently designing and building Morello, a CHERI-enabled prototype architecture, processor, SoC, and board, extending the high-performance Neoverse N1, to enable industrial evaluation of CHERI and pave the way for potential mass-market adoption. However, for such a major new security-oriented architecture feature, it is important to establish high confidence that it does provide the intended protections, and that cannot be done with conventional engineering techniques.In this paper we put the Morello architecture on a solid mathematical footing from the outset. We define the fundamental security property that Morello aims to provide, reachable capability monotonicity, and prove that the architecture definition satisfies it. This proof is mechanised in Isabelle/HOL, and applies to a translation of the official Arm specification of the Morello instruction-set architecture (ISA) into Isabelle. The main challenge is handling the complexity and scale of a production architecture: 62,000 lines of specification, translated to 210,000 lines of Isabelle. We do so by factoring the proof via a narrow abstraction capturing essential properties of arbitrary CHERI ISAs, expressed above a monadic intra-instruction semantics. We also develop a model-based test generator, which generates instruction-sequence tests that give good specification coverage, used in early testing of the Morello implementation and in Morello QEMU development, and we use Arm’s internal test suite to validate our model.This gives us machine-checked mathematical proofs of whole-ISA security properties of a full-scale industry architecture, at design-time. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration that that is feasible, and it significantly increases confidence in Morello.

AbstractAn increasing research effort is being carried out to profit from the advantages of photonics not only in long-range telecommunications but also at short distances, to implement board-to-board or chip-to-chip interconnections. In this context, Silicon Photonics emerged as a promising technology, allowing to integrate optical devices in a small silicon chip. However, the integration density made possible by Silicon Photonics revealed the difficulty of operating complex optical architectures in an open-loop way, due to their high sensitivity to fabrication parameters and temperature variations. In this chapter, a low-noise mixed-signal electronic platform implementing feedback control of complex optical architectures is presented. The system exploits the ContactLess Integrated Photonic Probe, a non-invasive detector that senses light in silicon waveguides by measuring their electrical conductance. The CLIPP readout resolution has been maximized thanks to the design of a low-noise multichannel ASIC, achieving an accuracy better than −35 dBm in light monitoring. The feedback loop to stabilize the behaviour of photonic circuits is then closed in the digital domain by a custom mixed-signal electronic platform. Experimental demonstrations of optical communications at high data-rate confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

AbstractIn industrial workplaces, strenuous, repetitive, and long-term tasks at head level or above as well as carrying heavy loads may lead to musculoskeletal disorders of different task dependent body parts. With an increasing trend towards wearable support systems, there is already a large quantity of exoskeletons that may support the user during movements, or stabilize postures, in order to reduce strain on various parts of the body. However, most commercially available exoskeletons mainly focus on the back and shoulder support. Only a few of them address the elbow joint, despite it being prone to injury. Therefore, this paper discusses different possible design and control concepts of modular elbow exoskeletons. The modular architecture potentially enables coupling to existing commercial- and research-associated systems, through appropriate interfaces. Different morphological structures and control mechanisms are assessed in respect to their ability to extend common exoskeletons for back and shoulder support. Based on these considerations, a first functional passive prototype is presented, which supports the flexion of the elbow joint and can be coupled to an existing exoskeleton. In future work, the prototype may be used for further elaboration and practical investigations in laboratory settings to evaluate its technical functionality and biomechanical effects on the user.

AbstractThe fractional-N frequency synthesis based on Digital Phase Locked Loop (DPLLs) has become a conventional design approach for the new radio wireless applications. The advantage of the digitally-intensive design style is the possibility to implement low-power and very accurate digital calibration techniques. Most of these algorithms run in the background tracking PVT variations and either relax or, in some cases, completely remove the performance limitations due to analog impairments. Moreover, the digital loop filter area is practically negligible with respect to the one in analog PLLs. These benefits become even more relevant in the scaled CMOS technology nodes. This chapter identifies the design parameters of a standard DPLL architecture and proposes a novel locking scheme to overcome the intrinsic limitations of the digital frequency synthesizers approach. To prove this new scheme a sub-6 GHz fractional-N synthesizer has been implemented in 65 nm CMOS. The synthesizer has an output frequency from 3.59 GHz to 4.05 GHz. The integrated output jitter is 182fs and the power consumption of 5.28 mW from 1.2 V power supply leads to a FoM of −247.5 dB. This topology exploits a novel locking technique that guarantee a locking time of 5.6 s, for a frequency step of 364 MHz, despite the use of a single bit phase detector.

Different associated properties of city models like building geometries, building energy systems, building end uses, and building occupant behavior are usually saved in different data formats and are obtained from different data sources. Experience has shown that the integration of these data sets for the purpose of energy simulation on city scale is often cumbersome and error prone. A new application domain extension for CityGML has been developed in order to integrate energy-related figures of buildings, thermal volumes, and facades with their geometric descriptions. These energy-related figures can be parameters or results of energy simulations. The applicability of the new application domain extension has been demonstrated for heating energy demand calculation.

Networks with higher degrees of complexity typically require more effort to manage and are more prone to configuration errors. Unfortunately, complexity remains one of the least understood aspects of networking. This chapter takes a first step toward bridging this gap, by presenting a top-down framework for modeling complexity in routing design, a critical and highly complex network design task. First, a set of abstractions is introduced for precisely defining objectives of routing design, and for reasoning about how a combination of routing design primitives will meet the objectives. Next, models are presented for quantitatively measuring the complexity of a routing design by modeling individual design primitives and leveraging configuration-derived complexity metrics. This modeling approach helps understand how individual design choices may impact the resulting complexity, and enables comparison of alternative routing designs and “what-if” analysis of the potential impact of a design change on complexity.

The emergence of software-defined networking (SDN) raises a set of fundamental questions, including architectural issues like whether control should be centralized or distributed, and whether control and data planes should be separated. Several open problems exist in SDN space, ranging from architectural questions that are fundamental to how networks scale and evolve to implementation issues such as how we build distributed “logically centralized” control planes. Moreover, since SDN is still in its early stage, there is an opportunity to make fault tracking framework a more integral part of the overall design process. Although SDN's goal is to simplify the management of networks, the challenge is that the SDN software stack itself is a complex distributed system, operating in asynchronous, heterogeneous, and failure-prone environments. In this chapter we will focus on three key areas: 1) SDN architecture, 2) scalable SDN systems to understand which pieces of control plane can be run logically centralized fashions, and 3) fault tracking framework to track down the failures in SDN.

This paper presents how complex system architecture lifecycles, such as that of cars, follow a similar S-curve shaped path as that of individual technological innovations. By applying this theory we show that today’s automotive industry has started a new chapter of architectural competition with similarities to its early history from 1885–1915 when steam, electric and internal combustion engine cars were competing to dominate the automotive market. Taking a historical perspective, we find that firms that organize their development activities to focus on bringing about architectural innovation are better placed in succeeding in the future market until a new dominant architecture emerges. The architecture lifecycle framework used in this study is constructed by means of a performance index. The index scores the performance of 91 cars of various architectures based on five overall system variables: power, weight, maximum velocity, fuel efficiency and the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. Depicting architectural performance over time helps identify periods of architecture competition and dominance where historical agents to change can be identified. The key factors that brought about architectural competition in the early 1900’s involved a series of innovation breakthroughs in engine and fuel technologies. Today, a new wave of power train innovations is being triggered primarily by environmental regulatory demands to reduce vehicle emissions. Future research lies in presenting a methodology for selecting vehicle architectures early on in the product development cycle that are best suited for the market going forward based on a manufacturer’s goals and a cost-benefit analysis.

This paper reports on an exploratory study of how the architecture of a software product evolves over time. Because software is embedded in many of today’s complex products, and it is prone to relatively rapid change, it is instructive to study software architecture evolution for general insights into product design. We use metrics to capture the intrinsic complexity of software architectures as they evolve through successive generations (version releases). We introduce a set of product representations and metrics that take into account two important features used to manage the complexity in software products: layers and modules. We also capture organizational data associated with the product under development. We propose a three-step approach for the analysis and illustrate it using successive versions of an open source product, Ant. One of our findings is that software architectures seem to evolve in a non-linear manner similar to the S-shaped curve that characterizes technology evolution at the industry level. We also find several parallel patterns among architectural and organizational dynamics. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Axiomatic design (AD) techniques have not previously been applied in designing the overall architecture of an automobile. The present work investigates use of axiomatic design concepts for vehicle design in the Texas Tech University Eco-CAR program. The three different architectures considered are fuel cell, two-mode hybrid, and belt alternator/starter system (BAS+). The objective in using axiomatic design methods is to choose an architecture for the EcoCAR competition vehicle that follows the principles of axiomatic design, and in turn, should prove to be the best choice of vehicle architecture among the three considered. Function means trees (FMT) and design matrices (DM) are constructed for each of the architectures and are used in deciding whether the architecture is a coupled, uncoupled, or decoupled design per the independence axiom. The choice is supported by means of simulation results obtained for each architecture. Finally, a two-mode hybrid architecture is selected based on the use of axiomatic design and the simulation results.

In an age of physical separation, a new pedagogical paradigm was established via the integration of pre-recorded videos, video conferencing, and online assessments to become hallmarks of the “new normal”. In architectural education, the hands-on learning methodologies were suddenly compromised, challenging design pedagogy to reconfigure how students integrate collaborative design, studio culture, and develop analog skills into virtual learning. This prompted the question, how can architecture be effectively taught and experimentally explored through distanced and virtual means? The recent COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted this pedagogical environment and extinguished the opportunity of accessioning collaborative facilities considering recent distancing parameters. Conducting a literature review on experiences of virtual teaching in the realm of architecture, the paper explores scenarios, surveys, and adaptations to an unprecedented full online architecture studio. The paper showcases a series of teaching modifications that prove to be useful in maintaining and improving student engagement and performance in virtual architectural pedagogy.

Predictive design analytics is a new paradigm to enable design engineers to extract knowledge from large-scale, multi-dimensional, unstructured, volatile data, and transform the knowledge and its trend into design decision making. Predictive, data-driven family design (PDFD) is proposed as one of the predictive design analytics methods to tackle some issues in family design. First, a number and specifications of product architectures are determined by data (not by pre-defined market segments) in order to maximize expected profit. A trade-off between price and cost in terms of the quantity and specifications of architectures helps to set the target in the enterprise level. k-means clustering is used to find architectures that minimize within architecture sum of squared errors. Second, a price prediction method as a function of product performance and deviations between performance and customer requirements is suggested with exponential smoothing based on innovations state space models. Regression coefficients are treated as customer preferences over product performance, and analyzed as a time series. Prediction intervals are proposed to show market uncertainties. Third, multiple values for common parameters in family design can be identified using the expectation maximization clustering so that multiple-platform design can be explored. Last, large-scale data can be handled by the PDFD algorithm. A data set which contains a total of 14 million instances is used in the case study. The design of a family of universal electronic motors demonstrates the proposed approach and highlights its benefits and limitations.

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) has demonstrated outstanding results for the treatment of medically intractable Parkinson’s disease (PD), essential tremor and other neurological and psychiatric disorders, such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and major depression [1,2]. Despite widespread proliferation, efficacy of DBS treatment is limited primarily because of two key limitations as shown in Fig. 1: (a) non-specific activation of regions implicated in DBS side effects, and (b) inefficient neurostimulation due to complex anatomical structure and axonal orientations of target regions. Thus, there is a need to develop approaches to DBS that achieve more precise target selection and efficient activation of axonal pathways within the brain. Recent efforts in target selection has focused on shaping the stimulation field by using multichannel electrodes for current steering [3]. These multichannel electrodes are limited to cylindrical lead configuration and can only correct for small spatial localization errors, and they do not utilize the direction of the electrical field’s gradients to stimulate neurons depending on their orientation (mainly orientation of axons). Thus, there is a critical need for new electrode architectures that enable both spatial steering and stimulation field orientation tuning capabilities. Here we present the Flex-DBS, a novel DBS electrode lead architecture that harnesses recent advances in flexible probe fabrication and precision guidance strategy to mechanically reconfigure electrodes in three dimensional orientations within anatomically complex brain tissue. Further, it incorporates dense arrays of electrodes with each lead that allow stimulation field orientation tuning.

Interaction in distributed component based software-architectures can become a rather complex and error prone issue. As it is good practice to keep application concerns separated from infrastructural ones, component based applications typically rely on communication middleware to cope with matters of distribution and heterogeneity. Unfortunately, generic middleware tends to be monolithic, heavyweight software, which is unacceptable in resource constrained embedded systems. Communication middleware for distributed embedded systems has to be custom tailored to the application’s interaction needs and therefore shall be as lightweight as possible. By applying the component paradigm to the communication middleware, a practical methodology can be defined, that allows the middleware’s automatic generation from the application’s architectural models and structural designs of explicit component connectors with a well defined set of prefabricated basic building blocks—so called communication primitives. This paper contributes by specifying the most common structural designs for explicit connectors within the automotive domain and thereby, in addition identifies a set of classes of automotive communication primitives. Thus this paper provides the sound foundation for automatic, model driven middleware synthesis by specifying all necessary basic modules.

Manufacturers launch new product models at various time increments to meet changing market requirements over time. At each design period, product design and price may change. While price decisions can be made at product launching time, redesign decisions must be made in advance. Real options theory addresses such time gap decisions. This paper presents a real options approach with a binomial lattice model to determine optimal design and price decisions for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) that maximize expanded net present value of profit under gas price uncertainty over time. Results confirm that we can obtain changing vehicle attributes by changing gear ratios rather than the architectures themselves due to high cost of redesigning. A parametric study examines the impact of gas price volatility on option decisions and shows that larger volatility of gas price causes the change option to be selected more frequently.
