The geometry of hydrogen bonds in LD–LD hydrogen-bonding patterns [Görbitzet al.(2009).Acta Cryst.B65, 393–400] at the hydrophilic core of each molecular bilayer are virtually unperturbed by the phase shift, but the C—C—S—C torsion angle of the side chain changes fromtransat 320 K togauche+ for the major conformation at 340 K.

Under low nutrient conditions hyphae of certain fungi are strongly attracted to microcolonies of bacteria belonging to the genera Pseudomonas and Agrobacterium. Hyphae of the fungi penetrate the microcolonies and proliferate to produce coral-loid, haustorial-like masses of absorptive hyphae. The bacteria in the colonies are lysed and the contents apparently absorbed as a nutrient source by the fungi. The four fungi that demonstrated this capability were Agaricus brunnescens (= A. bisporus), Coprinus quadrifidus, Lepista nuda, and Pleurotus ostreatus. Approximately 100 additional species belonging to the Basidiomycota, Oomycota, Zygomycota, Deuteromycota, or Ascomycota were also tested, but none were found capable of attacking and digesting bacterial colonies in this way.

Leech neurons in culture sprout rapidly when attached to extracts from connective tissue surrounding the nervous system. Laminin-like molecules that promote sprouting have now been isolated from this extracellular matrix. Two mAbs have been prepared that react on immunoblots with a approximately equal to 220- and a approximately equal to 340-kD polypeptide, respectively. These antibodies have been used to purify molecules with cross-shaped structures in the electron microscope. The molecules, of approximately equal to 10(3) kD on nonreducing SDS gels, have subunits of approximately equal to 340, 220, and 160-180 kD. Attachment to the laminin-like molecules was sufficient to initiate sprouting by single isolated leech neurons in defined medium. This demonstrates directly a function for a laminin-related invertebrate protein. The mAbs directed against the approximately equal to 220-kD chains of the laminin-like leech molecule labeled basement membrane extracellular matrix in leech ganglia and nerves. A polyclonal antiserum against the approximately equal to 220-kD polypeptide inhibited neurite outgrowth. Vertebrate laminin did not mediate the sprouting of leech neurons; similarly, the leech molecule was an inert substrate for vertebrate neurons. Although some traits of structure, function, and distribution are conserved between vertebrate laminin and the invertebrate molecule, our results suggest that the functional domains differ.

Background In the clinical course of diseases such as arboviruses, skin rashes may appear, as is often seen in other infectious diseases. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of arboviruses and other infectious causes of skin rash in a tertiary health unit in Manaus, Amazonas state, Western Brazilian Amazon Methodology/Principal findings This was a cross-sectional study of patients presenting with rash who sought care at Fundação de Medicina Tropical Dr. Heitor Vieira Dourado (FMT-HVD) from February 2018 to May 2019. Individuals of either gender, aged over 18 years, were invited to participate voluntarily. Infection by Zika virus (ZIKV), dengue virus (DENV), chikungunya virus (CHIKV), Mayaro virus (MAYV), Oropouche virus (OROV) and measles was evaluated using RT-qPCR (real-time polymerase chain reaction). Immunodiagnostic tests for EBV, CMV, HIV, syphilis, rubella and measles were also performed. A total of 340 participants were included, most were female (228, 67.1%) with an average age of 36.5 years (SD ± 12.2 years). The highest prevalence was of ZIKV monoinfections (65.3%, 222/340), followed by DENV (0.9%, 3/340) and CHIKV infection (0.3%, 1/340). No cases of MAYV, OROV or rubella were found. Other causes of skin rash were detected: measles (2.9%, 10/340), parvovirus B19 (0.9% 3/340), HIV (0.3%, 1/340) and syphilis 0.6% (2/340). The co-infections identified were ZIKV+HIV (0.3%, 1/340), ZIKV+measles (0.3%, 1/340), ZIKV+parvovirus B19 (0.3%, 1/340), ZIKV+EBV (0.3%, 1/340), EBV+parvovirus B19 (0.3%, 1/340), CMV+parvovirus B19 (0.6%, 2/340), CMV+syphilis (0.3%, 1/340), ZIKV+EBV+parvovirus B19 (0.3%, 1/340) and CMV+EBV+parvovirus B19 (0.9%, 3/340). Approximately one quarter of patients had no defined cause for their skin rash (25.3%, 86/340). Conclusions Despite the benign clinical evolution of most of the diseases diagnosed in this series of cases, syndromic surveillance of diseases such as syphilis and HIV are of utmost importance. Periodic serosurveillance might also aid in evaluating the trends of endemic diseases and eventual outbreaks.

The pole-density distributions of two hydrostatically extruded samples, a U–0.75 wt.% Ti alloy and a U–0.75 wt % Ti/W composite alloy, were studied by neutron diffraction methods. Analysis of U 112, U 131 and U 111 pole figures revealed that the α-U phases of both samples possess a [010]/[340] duplex fiber texture with a probability ratio of approximately 2.8:1 in favor of the [010] direction. The W phase of the composite sample had a [110] fiber texture. The orientation distribution profiles of the fiber axes obtained from the rocking curves (as a function of the tilt angle) were represented best by a Gaussian–Lorentzian combination function. The full widths at half maximum of the distributions were approximately 21, 11, and 5° for the U [010], U [340] and W [110] fiber axes, respectively.

Air pollution is a challenge for municipal authorities. Increased emission of PM10 and PM 2.5 particles is particularly noticeable in Poland primarily the autumn and winter period. That is due to the start of the heating season. According to the above data, road transport accounted for approximately 5% of the creation of PM10 particles, ca. 7% of PM2.5 and approximately 32% for NOx. In Poland, suspended particles (PM10 and PM2.5) cause deaths of as many as 45,000 people a year. The issue of smog also affects other European cities. Therefore, it is necessary to undertake concrete efforts in order to reduce vehicle exhaust emissions as much as possible. It is therefore justifiable to reduce the emission of exhaust pollution, particularly NOx, PM, PN by conventional passenger cars powered by compression ignition engines. Emissions by these passenger cars have been reduced systematically. Comparative tests of the above emission of exhaust pollution were conducted on chassis dynamometer of such passenger car in NEDC cycle and in the new WLTC cycle in order to verify the level of emissions from this type of passenger car. Measurements of fuel consumption by that car were also taken. Emission of exhaust pollution and fuel consumption of the this car were also taken in the RDE road test.

Opuntia fragilis (Nutt.) Haw. is restricted to south-facing rock outcrops on the shores of certain rivers and lakes in the boreal forest of southeastern Manitoba. Limitations in propagule dispersal, establishment, and maintenance were studied at Bird River (50°25′ N, 95°41′ W) between October 1979 and October 1982. Propagules studied were stem units (pads) because this cactus propagates entirely by vegetative means in this region. Mature terminal pads broke off most easily in the late spring while turgid and rolled downhill (geochory), thus establishing new plants locally. Some pads fell into the river and could float long distances (hydrochory) before being washed ashore. Perhaps less frequently, pads were dispersed over long distances on animals (epizoochory). Marked pads placed in potential habitats showed significantly greater establishment (α = 0.05) on south-facing outcrops than on north-facing or forest sites. Censuses (1979–1982) of an established colony indicated that pad number was increasing by 51% per year. Approximately 6% of the pads were dispersed from the outcrop. The present distribution of O. fragilis appears to be both habitat and dispersal limited.

Abstract Prothrombin 20210G>A and factor V Leiden are common prothrombotic mutations in whites for which founder effects have been established. In this study, we analyzed the frequencies of 5 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and 9 microsatellites flanking the prothrombin gene (F2) in 88 homozygotes for 20210A and 66 homozygotes for 20210G. For estimating the age of the prothrombin 20210G>A mutation, we used the DMLE+2.0 program, which analyzed linkage disequilibria between the mutation and the multiple markers that had been assessed. This analysis yielded an age estimate of 23 720 years (95% credible set, 19 080-31 340 years). A similar analysis by the DMLE+2.0 program was performed on 5 SNPs from previously studied homozygotes for factor V Leiden and controls that yielded an age estimate of 21 340 years (95% credible set, 16 880-29 480 years). The occurrence of the 2 mutations in whites toward the end of the last glaciation and their presently wide distribution in whites suggest selective evolutionary advantages for which some evidence was reported (diminished blood loss) or is controversial (protection against infections).

One small monocotyledon petiole, 1.8 × 1.5 mm wide, has been recovered from the Princeton chert in the Middle Eocene Allenby Formation, British Columbia. The petiole, rectangular in transverse outline, shows approximately 36 circular to oval-shaped vascular bundles within aerenchymatous ground tissue that includes tannin cells. The epidermis is underlain by a discontinuous hypodermis of thick-walled, pitted cells. Vascular bundles are in five series: (I) a median U-shaped arc of 11 – 13 bundles; (II) an abaxial arc of 6 bundles located below the main arc; (III) two short abaxial arcs of 3 bundles each; (IV) 2 bundles just below the abaxial surface; and (V) an adaxial series of 7 bundles that show an inverse orientation to those bundles in series I–IV. Larger bundles are collateral, with a protoxylem lacuna encircled by a ring of 9 – 14 thin-walled parenchyma cells, a relatively well-developed phloem strand, and one to three thin-walled metaxylem elements. Based on bundle arrangement, orientation, and morphology, the fossil petiole most closely resembles those of the Butomaceae and Alismataceae. This new species, Heleophyton helobiaeoides Erwin and Stockey gen. et sp.nov., in the Princeton chert flora, documents the presence of the Alismataceae in the Middle Eocene of western North America and provides further evidence that the locality represents an ancient aquatic ecosystem.

We previously reported that radiation from all three ultraviolet (UV) waveband regions, i.e., UVA (320-400 nm), UVB (290-320 nm), and UVC (200-290 nm) cause either immediate apoptosis (UVA1, 340-400 nm) or delayed apoptosis (UVB or UVC) in L5178Y-R murine lymphoma cells. We coined the terms immediate and delayed apoptosis to help distinguish the mechanistic differences between apoptosis and programmed cell death (or delayed apoptosis) which have been incorrectly used as synonyms. This confusion occurred primarily because these two cell death mechanisms are morphologically identical. However, kinetics can be used to discriminate between these two cell death mechanisms. Immediate apoptosis occurs within 4 h following exposure, whereas delayed apoptosis requires 20-34 h to display similar morphological changes. In this investigation, we explored the possibility that the UVA1-induced immediate apoptotic mechanism might be a common phenomenon by examining a human acute T-cell leukemia cell line (Jurkat).Four hours following either sham- or UVAl-exposure to 250, 500, or 750 kJ/m2 (resulting in approximately 50, 80 and 90% reproductive death, respectively) from a 200 W/m2 sunlamp (>340 nm), Jurkat T-cells (clone E6-1, American Type Culture Collection, Rockville, MD) were processed for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) using a procedure described previously.

This thesis addresses Constantine's developments of the Roman province of Palaestina. It analyzes two important Christian bishops, Eusebius of Caesarea and Cyril of Jerusalem, and one nameless Christian traveler, the Bordeaux pilgrim, to illuminate how fourth-century Christians understood these developments. This study examines the surviving writings of these Christian authors: the Bordeaux Itinerary, Cyril's Catechetical Lectures, and Eusebius's Ecclesiastical History, Onomasticon, Preparation of the Gospel, Proof of the Gospel, and the Life of Constantine, and the archaeological remains of several Constantinian basilicas to interpret their views of the imperial attentions that were being poured into the land. Together these accounts provide views of fourth-century Palaestina and Jerusalem that when combined more fully illuminate how Christians understood Constantine's Holy Land policy. This study focuses on Constantine's developments of the city of Jerusalem, primarily the so-called Triad of Churches (The church of the Nativity, the Eleona, and the Holy Sepulchre) built in and around the city. It likewise considers the countryside of Palaestina outside of Jerusalem. While some Christians were resistant to the developments of Jerusalem, our sources reveal how many Christians supported, or at least desired to experience, the newly developing Christian Holy Land. This thesis argues that most of the discrepancies over the city of Jerusalem between our sources, especially Eusebius and Cyril, developed from long-standing political tensions between the cities of Caesarea and Jerusalem. The Bordeaux pilgrim, on the other hand, traveled across the Roman Empire to see and experience the developing sites throughout the land with no interest in local political debates. With this added perspective we can see how Christians, separated from the positions of church fathers, experienced the developing Holy Land.

We study the merchant operations of commodity and energy conversion assets. Examples of such assets include natural gas pipelines systems, commodity swing options, and power plants. Merchant operations involves managing these assets as real options on commodity and energy prices with the objective of maximizing the market value of these assets. The economic relevance of natural gas conversion assets has increased considerably since the occurrence of the oil and gas shale boom; for example, the Energy Information Agency expects natural gas to be the source of 30% of the world's electricity production by 2040 and the McKinsey Global Institute projects United States spending on energy infrastructure to be about 100 Billion dollars by 2020. Managing commodity and energy conversion assets can be formulated as intractable Markov decision problems (MDPs), especially when using high dimensional price models commonly employed in practice. We develop approximate dynamic programming (ADP) methods for computing near optimal policies and lower and upper bounds on the market value of these assets. We focus on overcoming issues with the standard math programming and financial engineering ADP methods, that is, approximate linear programing (ALP) and least squares Monte Carlo (LSM), respectively. In particular, we develop: (i) a novel ALP relaxation framework to improve the ALP approach and use it to derive two new classes of ALP relaxations; (ii) an LSM variant in the context of popular practice-based price models to alleviate the substantial computational overhead when estimating upper bounds on the market value using existing LSM variants; and (iii) a mixed integer programming based ADP method that is exact with respect to a policy performance measure, while methods in the literature are heuristic in nature. Computational experiments on realistic instances of natural gas storage and crude oil swing options show that both our ALP relaxations and LSM methods are efficient and deliver near optimal policies and tight lower and upper bounds. Our LSM variant is also between one and three orders of magnitude faster than existing LSM variants for estimating upper bounds. Our mixed integer programming ADP model is computationally expensive to solve but its exact nature motivates further research into its solution. We provide theoretical support for our methods: By deriving bounds on approximation error we establish the optimality of our best ALP relaxation class in limiting regimes of practical relevance and provide a theoretical perspective on the relative performance of our LSM variant and existing LSM variants. We also unify different ADP methods in the literature using our ALP relaxation framework, including the financial engineering based LSM method. In addition, we employ ADP to study the novel application of jointly managing storage and transport assets in a natural gas pipeline system; the literature studies these assets in isolation. We leverage our structural analysis of the optimal storage policy to extend an LSM variant for this problem. This extension computes near optimal policies and tight bounds on instances formulated in collaboration with a major natural gas trading company. We use our extension and these instances to answer questions relevant to merchants managing such assets. Overall, our findings highlight the role of math programming for developing ADP methods. Although we focus on managing commodity and energy conversion assets, the techniques in this thesis have potential broader relevance for solving MDPs in other application contexts, such as inventory control with demand forecast updating, multiple sourcing, and optimal medical treatment design.

This thesis presents an empirical investigation into the Arbitrage Pricing Theory (APT). At the onset of the thesis it is recognised that tests of the APT are conditional on a number of preconditions and assumptions. The first line of investigation examines the effect of the assumed nature of the form of the return generating process of stocks. It is found that stocks follow an approximate factor structure and tests of the APT are sensitive to the specified form of the return generating process. We provide an efficient estimation methodology for the case when stocks follow an approximate factor structure. The second issue we raise is that of the appropriate factors, the role of the market portfolio and the performance of the APT against the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM). The conclusions that we draw are that the APT is robust to a number of specified alternatives and furthermore, the APT outperforms the CAPM in comparative tests. In addition, within the APT specification there is a role for the market portfolio. Through a comparison of the results in chapters 2 and 3 it is evident that the APT is not robust to the specification of unexpected components. We evaluate the validity of extant techniques in this respect and find that they are unlikely to be representative of agents actual unexpected components. Consequently we put forth an alternative methodology based upon estimating expectations from a learning scheme. This technique is valid in respect to our prior assumptions. Having addressed these preconditions and assumptions that arise in tests of the APT a thorough investigation into the empirical content of the APT is then undertaken. Concentrating on the issues that the return generating process must be unique and that the estimated risk premia should be stable overtime the results indicate that the APT does have empirical content. Finally, armed with the empirically valid APT we proceed to analyse the issue of seasonalities in stock returns. The results confirm previous findings that there are seasonal patterns in the UK stock market, however, unlike previous findings we show that these seasonal patterns are part of the risk return structure and can be explained by the yearly business cycle. Furthermore, the APT retains empirical content when these seasonal patterns are removed from the data. The overall finding of this thesis is that the APT does have empirical content and provides a good description of the return generating process of UK stocks.

In this paper, we present a new thermal reflow method to transform photresist pillars into the shapes of spherical caps and month-eyes. We also investigated the effect of this sub-wavelength structure morphology on anti-reflection properties of these photoresist patterns. The diameter, the height, and the pitch of this regularly arranged pillar array were set at 200, 250, and 340 nm, respectively. After the thermal reflow, experimental results showed that the reflectivity of the heat-treated photoresist patterns can be reduced to approximately one fourth of that of the polished surface of the silicon wafer.

In the European Union, each inhabitant annually generates about 500 kg of municipal waste. About 30 % of this are incinerated in waste-to-energy plants. It results in approximately 20 million tonnes of residues known as municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) bottom ash, which is typically landfilled. To address the continuous growth of landfills and to implement zero waste and circular economy policies, researchers are focusing on possibilities to use MSWI bottom ash in civil engineering instead of landfilling. One of them is to replace natural aggregates in concrete mixtures applicable for roads with MSWI bottom ash. Therefore, the subject of this research is the performance of concrete mixtures containing different amount (0–100%) and fraction (0/5–0/16) of MSWI bottom ash. Four specimens with similar aggregate gradations were designed. Each of them was mixed with two different amount (340 kg/m3 and 300 kg/m3) of cement (CEM I 42.5 R). In total eight different concrete mixtures were tested and analysed. The performance of designed concrete mixtures containing different amount of MSWI bottom ash was evaluated according to density and compressive strength after 28 days. The results showed good MSWI bottom ash performance as a substitute for natural aggregates. The compressive strength after 28 days varied from 21 MPa to 29 MPa depending on the aggregate type and amount of MSWI bottom ash and cement. For concrete mixtures made only of MSWI bottom ash at least 340 kg/m3 of cement is required to achieve compressive strength higher than 20 MPa.

Open loop, experimental force and power measurements of a radial, redundant-axis, magnetic bearing at temperatures to 1000°F (538°C) and rotor speeds to 15,000 RPM along with theoretical temperature and force models are presented in this paper. The experimentally measured force produced by a single C-core circuit using 22 A was 600 lb. (2.67 kN) at room temperature and 380 lb. (1.69 kN) at 538°C. These values were compared with force predictions based on a 1D magnetic circuit analysis and a thermal analysis of gap growth as a function of temperature. The analysis showed that the reduction of force at high temperature is mostly due to an increase in radial gap due to test conditions, rather that to reduced core permeability. Tests under rotating conditions showed that rotor speed has a negligible effect on the bearing’s static force capacity. One C-core required approximately 340 W of power to generate 190 lb. (845 N) of magnetic force at 538°C, however the magnetic air gap was much larger than at room temperature. The data presented is after bearing operation for eleven total hours at 538°C and six thermal cycles.

This paper presents an experimental study of natural convection heat transfer for an Ionic Liquid. The experiments were performed for 1-butyl-2, 3-dimethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, ([C4mmim][NTf2]) at a Rayleigh number range of 1.13×107 to 7.7×107. In addition to determining the convective heat transfer coefficients, this study also included experimental determination of thermophysical properties of [C4mmim][NTf2] such as, density, viscosity, heat capacity, and thermal conductivity. The results show that the density of [C4mmim][NTf2] varies from 1.437–1.396 g/cm3 within the temperature range of 10–50°C, the thermal conductivity varies from 0.125–0.12 W/m.K between a temperature of 10 to 70°C, the heat capacity varies from 1.015 J/g.K–1.760 J/g.K within temperature range of 25–340°C and the viscosity varies from 243cP–18cP within temperature range 10–75°C. The results for density, thermal conductivity, heat capacity, and viscosity were in close agreement with the values in the literature. Measured dimensionless Nusselt number was observed to be higher for the ionic liquid than that of DI water. This is expected as Nusselt number is the ratio of heat transfer by convection to conduction and the ionic liquid has lower thermal conductivity (approximately 20% of DI water) than DI water.

A 2.45 GHz radio frequency (RF) exposure system was designed and used to study the RF effects on the genome-wide gene expression in cultured human cells. In this system, a T-25 culture flask, which contains 10 × 106 cells in a 10ml medium, is placed in a WR 340 waveguide. The waveguide serves as an environmental chamber. The source is a pulsed magnetron for obtaining a high electric field with the specific absorption rate (SAR) at approximately 10 W/kg. In order to ensure the non-thermal effect, the system was designed to maintain a temperature of 37°C. In this research, the heat transfer analysis of the system was conducted using the computational fluid dynamic (CFD) software FLUENT® coupled with the finite element software, High Frequency Structural Simulation (HFSS) by Ansoft. The electric field was first analyzed by using HFSS to calculate the SAR distribution as a heat source input for CFD calculations. The fluid flow and temperature distributions within the flask were then analyzed using FLUENT®. The results were validated experimentally by measuring the temperatures with fluoroptic thermometer probes as well as by examining the level of heat shock gene expression. These results provide useful information for a better understanding and controlling of the operating conditions of the system.

Siempelkamp Nukleartechnik GmbH has gained lots of experience from melting ferrous metals for recycling in the nuclear cycle as well as for release to general reuse. Due to the fact that the world market prices for non-ferrous metals like copper, aluminium or lead raised up in the past and will remain on a high level, recycling of low-level contaminated or activated metallic residues from nuclear decommissioning becomes more important. Based on the established technology for melting of ferrous metals in a medium frequency induction furnace, different melt treatment procedures for each kind of non-ferrous metals were developed and successfully commercially converted. Beside different procedures also different melting techniques such as crucibles, gas burners, ladles etc. are used. Approximately 340 Mg of aluminium, a large part of it with a uranium contamination, have been molten successfully and have met the release criteria of the German Radiation Protection Ordinance. The experience in copper and brass melting is based on a total mass of 200 Mg. Lead melting in a special ladle by using a gas heater results in a total of 420 Mg which could be released. The main goal of melting of non-ferrous metals is release for industrial reuse after treatment. Especially for lead, a cooperation with a German lead manufacturer also for recycling of non releasable lead is being planned.

One of the most significant challenges in data-driven modeling of complex systems is dealing with concept drift, i.e., the unpredictable changes in the underlying data distribution over time. In this work, nine concept drift detection (CDD) methods are evaluated with respect to different types of concept drift, including abrupt, gradual, incremental, and real concept drift, for both supervised and unsupervised application scenarios. For the supervised case, the methods EDDM, FHDDMSadd, MDDM-E, and EFDT are compared against a classification without change detection using Naïve Bayes as the base classifier. In the unsupervised application scenario, CluStream, ClusTree, DenStream, StreamKM++, and D-Stream are evaluated. The experiments are conducted using the Massive Online Analysis (MOA) evaluation platform, and the performance of each method is measured in terms of classification accuracy, memory consumption, and computation time. This empirical research shows that classification accuracy can be improved by 20% by implementing a CDD method, highlighting the importance of CDD in SHM data streams. However, there is no single method that proves to be superior in all scenarios, and the choice depends on the characteristics of the considered data stream and application requirements. Selecting the appropriate CDD method from the approximately 340 different methods found in the literature is not a trivial task and can lead to suboptimal selection. To tackle this issue, an innovative approach is proposed to assist researchers and practitioners find the appropriate CCD method for their application.

This work addresses the preparation and characterization of efficient adsorbents for tertiary treatment (oil content below 100 ppm) of oil/water emulsions. Powdered low-density polyethylene (LDPE) was modified by radio-frequency plasma discharge and then used as a medium for the treatment of emulsified diesel oil/water mixtures in the concentration range from 75 ppm to 200 ppm. Plasma treatment significantly increased the wettability of the LDPE powder, which resulted in enhanced sorption capability of the oil component from emulsions in comparison to untreated powder. Emulsions formed from distilled water and commercial diesel oil (DO) with concentrations below 200 ppm were used as a model of oily polluted water. The emulsions were prepared using ultrasonication without surfactant. The droplet size was directly proportional to sonication time and ranged from 135 nm to 185 nm. A sonication time of 20 min was found to be sufficient to prepare stable emulsions with an average droplet size of approximately 150 nm. The sorption tests were realized in a batch system. The effect of contact time and initial oil concentrations were studied under standard atmospheric conditions at a stirring speed of 340 rpm with an adsorbent particle size of 500 microns. The efficiency of the plasma-treated LDPE powder in oil removal was found to be dependent on the initial oil concentration. It decreased from 96.7% to 79.5% as the initial oil concentration increased from 75 ppm to 200 ppm. The amount of adsorbed oil increased with the increasing contact time. The fastest adsorption was observed during the first 30 min of treatment. The adsorption kinetics for emulsified oils onto sorbent followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model.

For energy independence to become a reality, whether through the more effective use of US natural resources such as natural gas or through the continued development of the hydrogen economy, efficient and reliable large-scale compressors are needed to enhance the existing pipeline infrastructure that moves energy storing gases from production sites to end user locations. Oil-free, non-contacting seal and bearing technologies are critical to the successful development of new high efficiency and power dense compressors. Similarly with increasing emphasis on energy conservation, power and propulsion gas turbine engines will require advanced low leakage seals and may take advantage of efficiencies offered by compliant foil gas bearings. When properly applied these oil-free, non contacting technologies will have a positive impact on the operating efficiency and life of compressor and gas turbine engine systems. The overall objective of this paper is to present recent advances in compliant foil bearings and seals that make them attractive for a wide array of systems. The paper documents the design approach that includes analytical trade off studies to establish overall requirements followed by an experimental program to demonstrate the ability of the identified foil technology to meet the machine requirements. A summary of advancements in foil bearing load carrying capacity, size scaling from 6 mm to 150 mm in diameter, the ability to operate under shock loads greater than 40 g as well as under steady side loads with two different gases and finally the ability to operate at temperatures greater than 750 C will be presented. Data will also be presented showing the application of foil bearings to several different machines. Similarly, results from design, fabrication and testing of compliant foil radial and axial face seals will be discussed. Data from axial face seals testing at differential pressures, surface velocities, and normal loads greater than 675 kPa, 350 m/s, and 1100 N respectively will be presented to demonstrate non-contacting performance. Results of subcomponent testing will also be presented to demonstrate the capability of the face seal to accommodate axial excursions of up to 3.8 mm. Compliant foil radial seal testing in sizes ranging from approximately 60 to 215 mm in diameter under differential pressures to 690 kPa and surface velocities to 340 m/s will be presented and compared to prediction. The culmination of the work presented supports the application of compliant foil bearings and seals in a wide array of advanced machinery.

From May 2021 to January 2022, Oxfam, in partnership with Sejajar Indonesia, the Tamdeen Youth Foundation in Yemen, and the Palestinian Agricultural Development Association (PARC) in Palestine, convened a total of 10 learning series through online convenings on local humanitarian leadership (LHL). Approximately 450 people participated, of whom 60% were from local and national NGOs representing approximately 30 countries. This document offers a snapshot report on the state of LHL across the four regions based on discussions, insights, and materials shared by the resource persons and audience members who participated in the series.

Pipelines, Producers, and Marketers (PPM) were also included, and for purposes of this analysis, have been grouped together.

On April 19, 2019, one male career Fire Captain, one male career Fire Engineer, and two male career Firefighters received serious injuries as a result of cascading thermal runaway within a 2.16 MWh lithium-ion battery energy storage system (ESS) that led to a deflagration event. The smoke detector in the ESS signaled an alarm condition at approximately 16:55 hours and discharged a total flooding clean agent suppressant (Novec 1230). The injured firefighters were members of a hazardous materials (HAZMAT) team that arrived on the scene at approximately 18:28 hours. The HAZMAT team noted low-lying white clouds of a gas/vapor mixture issuing from the structure and nearby components and drifting through the desert. The team defined a hot zone and made several entries into the hot zone to conduct 360-degree size-ups around the ESS using multi-gas meters, colorimetric tubes, and thermal imaging cameras (TICs). The team detected dangerously elevated levels of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and carbon monoxide (CO) during each entry. The team continued to monitor the ESS and noted the white gas/vapor mixture stopped flowing out of the container at approximately 19:50 hours. The HAZMAT leadership developed an incident action plan with input from a group of senior fire officers and information about the ESS provided by representatives from the companies that owned, designed, and maintained the ESS. The HAZMAT team made a final entry into the hot zone and found that HCN and CO concentrations in the vicinity of the ESS were below an acceptable threshold. In following with the incident action plan, the team opened the door to the ESS at approximately 20:01 hours. A deflagration event was observed by the firefighters outside the hot zone at approximately 20:04 hours. All HAZMAT team members received serious injuries in the deflagration and were quickly transported to nearby hospitals. Note: The lithium-ion battery ESS involved in this incident was commissioned prior to release of a first draft of the current consensus standard on ESS installations, NFPA 855 [1]; the design of the ESS complied with the pertinent codes and standards active at the time of its commissioning.

High-low misalignment in girth welds introduces local bending stress and thus can potentially have detrimental effects on the load capacity of girth welds. However, long-term pipeline service experience demonstrates that pipelines can survive a large degree of high-low misalignment without an appreciably negative impact on the safety and integrity of the pipeline. This project is intended to understand the effects of misalignment on the performance of girth welds. Under Phase 1 (preceding phase) of this project, the effect of weld high-low misalignment on nominally defect-free girth welds was investigated. In this Phase 2 work, the focus is on understanding the influence of high-low misalignment on the stress capacity of girth welds with planar flaws. From the work so far, it appears that moderate levels of high-low misalignment, approximately 1/3 of pipe wall thickness, can be permitted without a negative impact on the stress capacity of girth welds, provided certain quality control measures are taken, such as ensuring a smooth weld transition profile and minimizing the propensity of hydrogen assisted cracking. The work done in Phases 1 and 2 also provides a foundation for the follow-on work in Phases 3 and 4 of this project, which focus on drafting code-ready recommendations and communicating the recommendations to the standards committees.

A reciprocating compressor facility with seven to eight compressors could be expected on average to develop new leakage at standard components of 2,700 Mcf/yr. Approximately 75% of the total new leak volume occurs at compressor components even though they only comprise approximately 30% of the total components at a site. The cost of follow-up surveys can be reduced by focusing on the compressor areas. A centrifugal compressor facility with two compressors could be expected to develop new leakage at standard components of approximately 100 Mcf/yr. The results are indicative of the fact that these facilities do not experience the type of vibrational stresses typically encountered at reciprocating compressor stations. This report describes a cooperative study sponsored by PRCI, GRI, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to determine the most cost effective ways to mitigate leaks at natural gas compressor stations. Leak rate measurements were initially made at thirteen compressor stations starting in September of 1995 until the end of 1997. Ten of these sites were selected for four quarters of surveys. This report presents the emission factors for natural gas compressor stations, the trends in leak rates over time, and a cost benefit analysis of leak mitigation.

Transportation agencies in northern environments spend a considerable amount of their budget on salt for winter operations. For example, in the state of Indiana, there are approximately 120 salt storage facilities distributed throughout the state and the state expends between 30 M USD and 60 M USD on inventory and delivery each year. Historical techniques of relying on visual estimates of salt stockpiles can be inaccurate and unhelpful for managing the supply chain during the winter or planning for re-supply during the summer months. This project report describes the implementation of a portable and permanent LiDAR system that can be used to inventory indoor stockpiles of salt in under 15 min and describes how this system has been deployed over 300 times at over 120 facilities. A quick and easy accuracy test, based on the conservation of volume, was used to provide an independent check on the system performance by repositioning portions of the salt pile. Those tests indicated stockpile volumes can be estimated with an accuracy of 1%–3% of indicated stockpile volumes. The report concludes by discussing how this technology can be permanently installed for systematic monitoring throughout the year.

This paper exploits a rich collection of household surveys to investigate the wage differential between the public and private sectors in 17 Latin American countries during the 1980s and 1990s. The paper also studies how the sector of employment affects the gender wage gap. The paper finds very small premia for male workers and significant premia for female workers. The paper also finds that, on average, Latin American women earn 30 percent less than men with similar skills and that approximately one third of this gender gap results from lack of access to formal sector employment.

There were two main objectives of this research. The first objective was to verify SINTEFs' pipe/soil interaction model test results, on which the A.G.A. Level 2 and 3 soil models are based. The second objective was to quantify the amount of conservatives built into the model equations for stiffer clay soils (above 30 psf shear strength). The original testing (at SINTEF) was done in soft clay soils (30 psf), and extrapolations to stiffer soils were done very conservatively, because data was not available. To accomplish these two objectives, pipe-soil interaction model tests were conducted at Texas A and M University in clay soils of approximately 30, 75, and 150 psf shear strength. Twenty-seven monotonic loading tests, and fifty-seven cyclic tests concluding with pipe break-out were performed. This is roughly four times the amount of testing originally done on clay by SINTEF. The test parameters and results are summarized in Table 1-1 for the monotonic loading tests, and Table 1-2 for the cyclic (displacement controlled) loading tests.

Introduction: the choice of minimally invasive methods positions hyaluronic acid fillers as a leading facial rejuvenation technique. Injectable hyaluronic acid fillers have been widely used in the clinical treatment of facial wrinkles. However, additional information and clinical evidence on the longevity of hyaluronic acid filler after injection is limited. Objectives: to demonstrate the efficacy, safety and longevity of cross-linked HA (AHR) 30 mg/ml (Estrianon Hyaluronic Implant 30® Allanmar International Company S.R.L., Argentina) for filling nasolabial folds (NLF). Design: multicenter, prospective and controlled clinical trial of 12 months duration. Materials and methods: 160 patients were included (132 women and 28 men) divided into 100, 30 and 30 of each cohort) and an injectable gel of cross-linked HA 30 mg/ml was applied in the correction of NLF to evaluate the safety, efficacy and longevity of the product. Results: a correction of the depression in the relevant sulci was observed, which was maintained until the end of the study. The mean level of improvement was clinically significant in 94% of cases. The severity of NLF was reduced by approximately 2 points to the range of mild or barely visible. Conclusions: Estrianon Hyaluronic Implant 30® proved to be a safe, effective filler with considerable longevity. At 12 months, significant correction was still observed and the treatment was well tolerated by patients.

In the Misty Creek Embayment of the western Mackenzie Mountains, Duo Lake Formation locally includes minor volcanic deposits associated with Marmot Formation volcanism. A bentonite layer from an outcrop of graptolitic shale found in NTS map area 106-B, in the upper part of the Duo Lake Formation, was sampled for U-Pb zircon dating. Analytical results yielded a dominant population of grains with a concordia age of 439.8 ± 3.0 Ma, interpreted as the age of deposition. Minor inherited zircon populations yielded ages ranging from approximately 1200 to 2850 Ma. Observed graptolites from the same outcrop likely range from Middle Ordovician to Early Silurian and are compatible with the interpreted U-Pb age of the bentonite. Previously known Middle and Late Ordovician volcanic activity in the Misty Creek Embayment is here expanded to include Early Silurian activity, and serves as a proxy for the timing of active extensional tectonism in the basin.
