Анотація:

Nuove interessanti pratiche di comunicazione politica hanno attraversato la campagna elettorale di Obama, soprattutto nell'ambiente del cosiddetto Web 2.0. In questo articolo si analizza il fenomeno dei video pubblicati su YouTube da Barely Political, il cui personaggio piů famoso č Obama Girl, che ha ottenuto uno strepitoso successo sia sul Web che sugli altri media tradizionali. L'articolo analizza la comunicazione di Barely Political, valutandone l'efficacia e svelando l'esistenza di una strategia comunicativa professionale che si cela dietro a ciň che era stato ingenuamente definito l'emblema di una comunicazione amatoriale e naďve, tipica del Web 2.0. In questo articolo vengono presentati i risultati di una ricerca sui primi due anni della comunicazione di Barely Political: dal giugno del 2007 al maggio del 2009. Sono stati presi in considerazione tutti i 264 video prodotti da Barely Political in questo lasso di tempo, analizzando non solo i contenuti ma anche i paratesti (le visualizzazioni, i commenti, le votazioni che gli utenti hanno espresso sui video) e i metadata (come le tag). I risultati della ricerca portano a definire il progetto Barely Political come un esempio di civic commercial engagement, che mette insieme due obiettivi strategici, l'impegno civile e il coinvolgimento commerciale.

Il paziente, un uomo di 44 anni, si presenta in consultazione quando sta affrontando le conseguenze legali di una denuncia, sporta dalla sua ex compagna, per aver diffuso dei video in cui facevano sesso. Riferisce inoltre di avere una vita sociale molto ridotta e di fare uso massiccio di pornografia con conseguenze sociali rilevanti. Il paziente riferisce che le sue difficoltà sono emerse a seguito della rottura della relazione con la sua precedente fidanzata. Dopo una fase di approfondimento diagnostico, il trattamento è stato combinato, con approccio psicodinamico per analizzare le esperienze infantili e la strutturazione dei modelli operativi interni e cognitivo-comportamentale per lavorare sugli agiti e lavorare sui fattori di mantenimento della problematica.

Negli ultimi decenni i tradizionali approcci terapeutici alla patologia ostruttiva salivare sono stati gradualmente sostituiti da trattamenti conservativi e mini-invasivi tra cui la litotrissia salivare, la scialoendoscopia, le tecniche di radiologia interventistica e la rimozione vidoendoscopica di calcoli per via trans-orale o trans-cervicale. Tra queste tecniche la scialoendoscopia è attualmente considerata il trattamento di scelta, tuttavia la sola scialoendoscopia interventistica non preceduta da tecniche di frammentazione garantisce una completa rimozione dei calcoli salivari allincirca nel 15-20% dei casi. Inoltre il 10-20% dei calcoli non è raggiungibile endoscopicamente o con altri approcci chirurgici. In questi casi la litotrissia salivare extracorporea rappresenta il trattamento di scelta. Nonostante ciò negli ultimi anni la litotrissia salivare extracorporea è stata gradualmente sostituita dalle tecniche di frammentazione intracorporee eseguite sotto controllo endoscopico tra cui la litotrissia salivare intracorporea laser e pneumatica video-assistita. In questo articolo verranno descritte le tecniche e le indicazioni residue alla litotrissia salivare, comprendente la litotrissia extracorporea e la litotrissia salivare intracorporea laser, elettroidraulica, elettrocinetica e pneumatica video-assistite. Verranno inoltre fornite le indicazioni residue di tali trattamenti.

<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><span style="font-family: 'Century Gothic',sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;" lang="ES-TRAD">I bambini e i ragazzi nel nuovo millennio sono forse più avvezzi alla visione di un film o di una trasmissione televisiva che non alla lettura di un libro. Quello che è certo, è che sono sottoposti a un bombardamento mediatico senza precedenti grazie a canali televisivi specializzati nella produzione di programmi per l’infanzia e l’adolescenza, alla Rete Internet e ai dispositivi mobili di ultima generazione. E a scuola? Come cambia la didattica? Al laboratorio Mela abbiamo documentato con un video l’avvio della prima esperienza delle Cl@ssi 2.0 in Emilia-Romagna nelle scuole secondarie inferiori. Alla fine dei 3 anni di sperimentazione, durante i quali gli insegnanti hanno utilizzato LIM, computer in classe e Moodle per l’insegnamento a distanza, abbiamo invece cercato di capire, con un questionario, come e quanto vengano utilizzati i video per la didattica. Ne sono seguite alcune riflessioni.</span></p>

Анотація:

Numerosi percorsi di formazione a livello internazionale e nazionale annoverano l'utilizzo del video, che si pone come strumento privilegiato per rilevare i processi che avvengono in classe: negli ultimi quindici anni si è assistito a un intensificarsi di tali esperienze in ambiti e aree geografiche differenti. Alla luce della cornice teorica della visione professionale, l'articolo propone una rassegna ragionata di cinque esperienze internazionali e nazionali di formazione dei docenti che, nella diversità di impostazione e postura epistemologica, concorrono a delineare un percorso di formazione iniziale, permanente e continua che si avvalga dello strumento video in modalità on line. La ricognizione, che non ha pretese di esaustività, vuole avviare un'analisi su un possibile modello formativo che ponga attenzione al referente della formazione e ai criteri osservativi adottati. Lo studio si colloca all'interno del progetto di eccellenza 2019-2020 Insegnamento di qualità e pratiche didattiche. Studio di fattibilità per lo sviluppo di un dispositivo per lo studio di pratiche di formazione dei docenti del Dipartimento di Filosofia e Scienze dell'Educazione dell'Università di Torino.

L'autore descrive la sua esperienza come professore di Psicoterapia all'Universitŕ di Bologna nel Corso di Laurea in Medicina e Chirurgia e in Scuole di specializzazione, in particolare quella di Psichiatria, dove dagli anni 1970 ha sperimentato varie modalitŕ di formazione alla terapia psicodinamica e alla psicoanalisi lavorando sia in setting ospedalieri sia nel territorio. Tra le modalitŕ formative sperimentate vi sono state, oltre ai seminari teorici tenuti anche da esperti nazionali e internazionali, le seguenti: gioco dei ruoli, gruppi Balint, gruppi di lettura, registrazioni video dei colloqui, supervisioni in piccoli gruppi, rappresentazioni teatrali di casi clinici, narrazioni di casi clinici storici accompagnate da iconografia e musiche d'epoca, ecc. Fu dato spazio anche alla formazione in psichiatria transculturale con la apertura nel 1995 di un Servizio per migranti, il Centro George Devereux. Infine, viene commentato il viraggio della psichiatria contemporanea verso una impostazione meno psicoterapeutica e piů psicofarmacologica.

La telemedicina si affaccia in diabetologia agli inizi degli anni Ottanta con un impiego limitato alla trasmissione di dati metabolici fra medico e paziente; nel tempo le aree di applicazione nella cura del diabete si sono moltiplicate ed i progetti attuali sono finalizzati nella gestione terapeutica ed educazionale Tutti gli operatori del sistema sanitario devono, oggi, comprendere che esercitare la professione sanitaria vuol dire non solo curare le persone, ma prendersi anche cura dei loro dati, e che le due cose non sono più scindibili. Altro problema delicato e centrale, che si pone la telemedicina, è quello di non ridurre il rapporto medico paziente ad una fredda interlocuzione attraverso un video o ad un impersonale messaggio, ma al contrario è quello di costruire intorno al paziente una rete fatta di servizi che non solo siano in grado di assisterlo nella malattia, ma anche di garantire quella buona qualità di vita che spesso è inficiata in una patologia complessa quale il diabete. Анотація:

Questo saggio ripercorre le principali linee di sviluppo degli studi della multimodalità intesa come semiosi della comunicazione nell’ambito di derivazione angloamericana. La multimodalità è definita come una disciplina a sé e discussa nella sua epistemologia attraverso un excursus della sua storia ed evoluzione dalla fine degli anni Novanta ad oggi. Si passano in rassegna alcune scuole di pensiero della multimodalità, a partire dagli sviluppi socio-semiotici di matrice linguistica sistemico-funzionale elaborata da Michael A. K. Halliday in Inghilterra negli anni Settanta. Le principali teorie e prassi di analisi multimodale sono illustrate attraverso alcuni principi cardine per delineare l’ambito di applicazione e le aree privilegiate di indagine. Il saggio inoltre illustra le differenze teoriche e pratiche fra multimodalità e multimedialità, termini spesso utilizzati in modo interscambiabile e dunque improprio. Successivamente, si presenta un’analisi multimodale del video TikTok più popolare di un creator italiano, Khaby Lame, che ha raggiunto livelli di viralità tali da guadagnargli fama e successo a livello globale. L’analisi, di natura qualitativa classica, consiste in una trascrizione e annotazione integrale del breve video più visualizzato al momento della scrittura del saggio, per inquadrare i fenomeni della semiosi della comunicazione digitale in un ambito disciplinare più vasto rispetto alla linguistica pura. Questa apertura ad aspetti non verbali include nell’analisi delle risorse semiotiche elementi quali lo sguardo, il montaggio, la distanza fra partecipanti, la musica, i rumori ambientali, la distribuzione degli elementi nel tempo e nello spazio, e così via. Coerentemente con questo presupposto di base, le conclusioni invitano a un ripensamento della definizione stessa di “lingua della rete”, indicando nella multimodalità, sia come teoria sia come metodo, una prospettiva utile alla lettura consapevole, etica e inclusiva della complessa testualità digitale contemporanea. Trajectories of multimodality: theoretical foundations and application model This paper discusses the main theories that map out the development of multimodality as semiosis of communication within the Anglo-American tradition. An overview of the history and evolution of multimodality starting in the late Nineties will motivate the claim that this is a discipline in its own, with its specific epistemology. Some major theories within sociosemiotics approaches are outlined, as resulting from the developments of systemic-functional linguistics as theorized by Michael A. K. Halliday in the Seventies in the UK. Theories and methods will be presented by means of an illustration of some key concepts and principles, with a view to explore some potential applications and preferential objects of studies. The paper also sets out to explain the differences between the concepts of multimodality and multimediality, which are often used interchangeably, thus bringing about theoretical and empirical issues. As a case study, I have selected the most viewed TikTok video produced by an Italian creator, Khaby Lame, who has gained global recognition and immense popularity, to the point of allowing him to obtain Italian citizenship after almost twenty years of Italian residency. The qualitative analysis makes use the typical heuristic tools used by multimodal analysts, namely an integral transcription and annotation of the video, with the aim of showing the full range of the involved digital communicative phenomena that cannot be accounted for only on linguistic grounds. Broadening the domain of analysis beyond the tools provided by linguistics includes the analysis and description of non-verbal semiotic resources, such as gaze, editing, distance between participants, music, ambient sound, compositional strategies in time and space, among others. Consistent with this approach, the concluding remarks encourage further reflections of the very definition of the “language of the net”. It follows that theoretical and empirical research lines mapped out by multimodal studies may ultimately help promote awareness, ethics, and inclusion when engaging with contemporary digital textualities.

Анотація:

La lingua dei segni italiana (LIS) è oggetto di ricerca scientifica da oltre quaranta anni ed è insegnata a pieno titolo nell’Università italiana da più di venti anni. In particolare, all’Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia e all’Università di Catania, la LIS può essere scelta come lingua di specializzazione al pari delle altre lingue offerte. L’insegnamento della LIS si può ora giovare della recente pubblicazione del QCER - Volume Complementare (Consiglio d’Europa, 2020), un manuale innovativo e inclusivo perché, rispetto alla versione del 2001, include le competenze linguistiche nelle lingue dei segni. Tre sono le principali novità: i) l’inserimento di espressioni neutrali rispetto alla modalità comunicativa (es. “il parlante/segnante”), ii) l’equiparazione funzionale delle videoregistrazioni ai testi scritti, e iii) un intero capitolo dedicato ai descrittori specifici per le lingue dei segni (suddivisi in competenze linguistiche, sociolinguistiche e pragmatiche). Questo contributo propone alcune riflessioni sull’applicazione di questi descrittori al caso specifico dell’insegnamento della LIS tracciando precise linee di progettazione didattica ed esempi di interventi formativi. L’impatto del Volume Complementare sui corsi di LIS nelle Università italiane comporterà ricadute positive non soltanto sul fronte dell’insegnamento ma anche, più in generale, sulla formazione dei professionisti sordi e udenti che lavorano con la LIS e con le persone sorde. Sign languages in the Companion volume and the teaching of LIS in Italian universities Italian Sign Language (LIS) has been studied by researchers for over forty years and has been taught in its own right in Italian universities for more than twenty years. In particular, at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and at the University of Catania, LIS can be chosen as a language of specialization on a par with the other languages on offer. LIS teaching can now benefit from the recent publication of the CEFR - Companion Volume (Council of Europe, 2020), an innovative and inclusive handbook as, compared to the 2001 version, it includes the linguistic competence in sign languages. In this regard, there are three main innovations: i) the inclusion of neutral expressions in terms of communication modality (e.g. “the speaker/signer”), ii) the recognition of the functional equivalence between video recordings and written texts, and iii) an entire chapter dedicated to language-specific descriptors of sign languages (organized into linguistic, sociolinguistic, and pragmatic skills). This paper discusses the application of these descriptors to the specific case of LIS teaching by tracing paths in didactic planning and providing examples of training interventions. The impact of the Companion Volumeon LIS courses in Italian universities will have positive effects not only on the teaching itself but also, more generally, on the training of deaf and hearing professionals who work with LIS and deaf people.

In questo studio è stato utilizzato un osservatorio video cablato (OBSEA, www.obsea.es) per il monitoraggio dei ritmi stagionale e annuali della composizione della comunità ittica costiera (20 m) nel Mediterraneo occidentale, in prossimità di una struttura artificiale. Nell’arco di 3 anni (2012-2014) è stata scattata una foto ogni 30 minuti utilizzando una videocamera ad alta risoluzione. Sono state inoltre registrate due importanti variabili ambientali che modulano il comportamento dei pesci: la temperatura dell'acqua e il fotoperiodo. In ogni foto è stato determinato il numero di individui di 6 specie appartenenti alla famiglia degli Sparidi: Dentex dentex, Diplodus sargus, Diplodus vulgaris, Diplodus puntazzo, Diplodus annularis, Diplodus cervinus. La ritmicità delle serie temporali è stata studiata utilizzando il linguaggio di computazione R attraverso uno dei suoi pacchetti aggiuntivi, RAIN. Inoltre, per evidenziare eventuali correlazioni tra le variabili scelte e le specie prese in esame sono state effettuate analisi di correlazione utilizzando il coefficiente per ranghi di Spearman. I risultati indicano che le specie D. dentex, D. sargus, D. annulars, D. vulgaris presentano una ritmicità annuale nella loro abbondanza presso la barriera artificiale. Dall’analisi di correlazione per ranghi di Spearman è stato osservato che la specie D. dentex presenta una correlazione positiva con entrambe le variabili ambientali. Le specie D. sargus e D. vulgaris presentano una correlazione positiva con la temperatura dell’acqua e nessuna correlazione con il fotoperiodo. Il D. annularis presenta una correlazione negativa con entrambe le variabili. Le specie D. puntazzo e D. cervinus non presentano nessuna correlazione con entrambe le variabili. La piattaforma OBSEA ha permesso di eseguire uno studio completo ed ha evidenziato le differenze ecologiche delle specie prese in esame, senza creare perturbazioni associate al campionamento.

Анотація:

La mia tesi analizza l'influenza del videoclip nel linguaggio del cinema hollywoodiano degli anni Ottanta. Si parte dal rapporto tra musica popolare e immagini filmate nel corso del Novecento fino ad arrivare al rock 'n' roll e ai primi esempi di video musicali, per poi parlare dell'utilizzo della musica pop nel cinema della New Hollywood. L'argomento principale sarà poi l'analisi dei cambiamenti economici e produttivi nell'industria dell'intrattenimento negli anni Ottanta e le caratteristiche linguistiche del cinema americano coevo. Si analizza il rapporto con il musical, il recupero del concetto di attrazione e il confronto con le teorie di Ejzenstejn. Infine si analizzano alcuni esempi per esplorare le possibilità espressive del videoclip all'interno di un film cinematografico. Si farà molta attenzione al montaggio e al modo in cui la musica pop può agire sulla struttura narrativa del film, evidenziando differenze e punti in comune con la tradizionale narratività del cinema hollywoodiano "classico".

Анотація:

This work unfolds delineating the typology of self-portrait videos to the extent available through the analysis of a series of interdisciplinary theoretical approaches from the 70’s up to today (based on the theories of Philippe Lejeune, Michel Beaujour, Raymond Bellour, Marie-Françoise Grange, Laura Rascaroli) for the purpose of confirming the existential conditions. In the absence of specific works on the subject, the self-portrait video emerges as an intellectual challenge, as it seems to possess excellent elusive and resistant qualities for the delimitation of conclusive definitions which have been acknowledged longstanding in traditional writings of the self. The second part presents, starting from assessed theoretical premises, the proposition for constructing a relevant reference analytical method, to which its general grid is modelled depending on the historical, historical-artistic, technical, formal, social, and personal variables that brought the elaboration of audiovisual works subjects of investigation. Simultaneously, the realization of this model has allowed to detect and select a first repertoire of examples of the Italian panorama from 1968 to the 80’s, to which this highlighted the necessary consideration of technical and historical aspects. In fact, the self-portrait video consists of a performative action which contains a visual metaphor made by subject through a linguistic and technical mediation necessarily present to highlight the social dimension. The third part attempts to introduce a few themes, such as the artist’s body and the relationship he has with his body and space, which contribute to the emblem of the author, symbol of a world not only corporal but also intimate, psychic, aesthetic, and spiritual. Attached are interviews of Maria Gloria Bicocchi, Lola Bonora, and Michele Sambin, conducted by experimenting with different interview models.
Questo lavoro è teso a circoscrivere per quanto possibile la tipologia dell’autoritratto video attraverso l’analisi di una serie di presupposti teorici interdisciplinari dagli anni Settanta ad oggi (fondati sulle teorie di Philippe Lejeune, Michel Beaujour, Raymond Bellour, Marie-Françoise Grange, Laura Rascaroli), allo scopo di confermarne le condizioni di esistenza. In assenza di lavori specifici sul soggetto, l’autoritratto video emerge in questo quadro quale sfida intellettuale, dal momento che sembra possedere in massimo grado le qualità di elusività e resistenza a lasciarsi delimitare in una definizione conclusiva che da tempo sono riconosciute alle più tradizionali scritture del sé. La seconda parte espone, a partire dalle premesse teoriche vagliate, la proposta di costruzione di un modello d’analisi di riferimento, quale griglia generale da modulare di volta in volta secondo le variabili storiche, storico-artistiche, tecniche, formali, sociali e personali che hanno portato all’elaborazione delle opere audiovisive oggetto d’indagine. Allo stesso tempo, la realizzazione di questo modello è servita al rilevamento e alla selezione di un primo repertorio di esempi dal panorama italiano tra il 1968 e gli anni Ottanta, che ha evidenziato la necessità di considerarne gli aspetti tecnici e storici. L’autoritratto video si costituisce infatti come un atto performativo che compone una visualizzazione metaforica del soggetto attraverso una necessaria mediazione linguistica e tecnica che ne evidenzia la dimensione sociale. Nella terza parte si è tentato di proporre una lettura di alcuni nodi tematici quali la rappresentazione del corpo dell’artista e le relazioni di tale corpo con lo spazio, che concorrono a comporre l’emblema autoriale, simbolo di un mondo non solo corporeo ma anche interiore, psichico, estetico e spirituale. In allegato, alcune interviste a Maria Gloria Bicocchi, Lola Bonora e Michele Sambin, condotte sperimentando diversi modelli di interviste.

Анотація:

Cognitive vision is an interesting field of research that tries to create vision systems with cognitive abilities. Automated video surveillance is increasingly needed to watch our public transport systems, either as a totally automated system or as an operator assistant. In this thesis a design for a cognitive automated video surveillance system is proposed. A hybrid ANN/CBR behavior analysis system is proposed as a cognitive extension of existing video tracking system, and a prototype is developed. By investigating the current state of cognitive vision and automated video surveillance and by looking at existing hybrid approaches to combine them, it is argued that this approach is an area of research where few designs are implemented and tested. Several frameworks for both ANN/CBR hybrids are proposed in literature, and so called emergent cognitive system frameworks are also presented, but few implementations have been done. As far as our literature review has spanned, no automated video surveillance system is attempted with the use of an ANN/CBR hybrid.

Edmond Husserl’s notion of ‘first sense’ experience is a phenomenological and experiential interpretation of the world based on immediate pre-theoretical and precognitive reflection. For Husserl, the apperception of the world using ‘first sense’ presupposes any scientific or theoretical understanding of it and presents a more meaningful and truthful experience because it is based on the fact of being. Authentic experience, in this exegesis, is considered a form of immediate and intuitive experience in which the certainty of the ‘first sense’ world contrasts to the obedience and homogenising effects of the spectacle and consumer society. For Guy Debord (1967) and Jean Baudrillard (1970) consumption and production combined with the omnipresence of mass media and advertising in contemporary existence is the source of debilitating and homogenising behaviour. The monotony and regularity of the work place, the separation of individuals through the comfort of television and the focus on the accumulation of goods that is commonplace counteracts immediate and intuitive experience and desecrates authentic living. This exegesis examines how the video works of two international artists, Anri Sala (2002) and Francis Alÿs (1999), and a selection of my own videos communicate the concept of authentic experience by exploring familiar and unremarkable subjects. The research hypothesises that although contemporary patterns of existence subsume individual behaviour for economic gain (as theorised by Debord and Baudrillard), authentic experience, in terms of immediate and ʻfirst senseʼ experience is a primary source of meaning. The work of Bill Viola is used in this research to contrast the use of video by Alys, Sala, and myself. Viola’s work demonstrates, through its theatricality, high production values and grandiose themes, concerns that are otherworldly and metaphysical as opposed to the immediate and of essentially human character of the works that are central to this discussion. By using the visual language of television and other time-based entertainment, video has the ability to focus on individual and specific circumstances and spontaneous behaviour in ways that viewers can easily recognise. Video art, paradoxically, highlights the affect that technology, consumerism and homogeneity has on individual experience through technology itself. In the videos of Sala and Alÿs, natural, or actual, time, evidenced by the passing of the sun over billboards (Sala) and Mexico’s City’s square (Alÿs), reveals social and political circumstances as well as our relationship to a much larger cosmological system. My videos aim to demonstrate authentic experience in the form of an immediate and intuitive response to banal events, whereby the familiar is dislodged from its role as an apathetic misnomer to the Spectacle through the combinatory use of video, audio and performance. The majesty of ordinary experience is revealed in my videos through expressions of bashfulness, giggling, and waving in The Quick Step (2005), the rupturing of a cyclic and repetitious sequence in When The Rain Comes (2007), highlighting consumer behaviour and disrupting its rhythm through the use of play in Name That Tune (2006), the use of audio to induce a sense of self-awareness in the viewer in Our Communication Recorded (2006) and by displacing recognition with a mesmerising, non-distinct form in The Alien’s Back (2007).

Intra-prediction is a method for coding standalone frames in video coding. Until now, this has mainly been done using linear formulae. Using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) may improve the prediction accuracy, leading to improved coding efficiency. In this degree project, Fully Connected Networks (FCN) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) were used for intra-prediction. Experiments were done on samples from different image sizes, block sizes, and block contents, and their effect on the results were compared and discussed. The results show that ANN methods have the potential to perform better or on par with the video coder High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) in the intra-prediction task. The proposed ANN designs perform better on smaller block sizes, but different designs could lead to better performance on larger block sizes. It was found that training one network for each HEVC mode and using the most suitable network to predict each block improved performance of the ANN approach.
Intra-prediktion är en metod för kodning av stillbilder i videokodning. Hittills har detta främst gjorts med hjälp av linjära formler. De föreslagna ANN-designerna presterar bättre på mindre blockstorlekar, men andra ANN-designs skulle kunna ge bättre prestanda för större blockstorlekar. Det konstaterades att prestandan för ANN-metoderna kunde ökas genom att träna ett nätverk för varje HEVC-mode och använda det mest passande nätverket för varje block.

The project exploits the use of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to describe infiltration, water, and solute distribution in the soil during irrigation. It provides a method of simulating water and solute movement in the subsurface which, in principle, is different and has some advantages over the more common approach of numerical modeling of flow and transport equations. The five objectives were (i) Numerically develop a database for the prediction of water and solute distribution for irrigation; (ii) Develop predictive models using ANN; (iii) Develop an experimental (laboratory) database of water distribution with time; within a transparent flow cell by high resolution CCD video camera; (iv) Conduct field studies to provide basic data for developing and testing the ANN; and (v) Investigate the inclusion of water quality [salinity and organic matter (OM)] in an ANN model used for predicting infiltration and subsurface water distribution. A major accomplishment was the successful use of Moment Analysis (MA) to characterize “plumes of water” applied by various types of irrigation (including drip and gravity sources). The general idea is to describe the subsurface water patterns statistically in terms of only a few (often 3) parameters which can then be predicted by the ANN. It was shown that ellipses (in two dimensions) or ellipsoids (in three dimensions) can be depicted about the center of the plume. Any fraction of water added can be related to a ‘‘probability’’ curve relating the size of the ellipse (or ellipsoid) that contains that amount of water. The initial test of an ANN to predict the moments (and hence the water plume) was with numerically generated data for infiltration from surface and subsurface drip line and point sources in three contrasting soils. The underlying dataset consisted of 1,684,500 vectors (5 soils×5 discharge rates×3 initial conditions×1,123 nodes×20 print times) where each vector had eleven elements consisting of initial water content, hydraulic properties of the soil, flow rate, time and space coordinates. The output is an estimate of subsurface water distribution for essentially any soil property, initial condition or flow rate from a drip source. Following the formal development of the ANN, we have prepared a “user-friendly” version in a spreadsheet environment (in “Excel”). The input data are selected from appropriate values and the output is instantaneous resulting in a picture of the resulting water plume. The MA has also proven valuable, on its own merit, in the description of the flow in soil under laboratory conditions for both wettable and repellant soils. This includes non-Darcian flow examples and redistribution and well as infiltration. Field experiments were conducted in different agricultural fields and various water qualities in Israel. The obtained results will be the basis for the further ANN models development. Regions of high repellence were identified primarily under the canopy of various orchard crops, including citrus and persimmons. Also, increasing OM in the applied water lead to greater repellency. Major scientific implications are that the ANN offers an alternative to conventional flow and transport modeling and that MA is a powerful technique for describing the subsurface water distributions for normal (wettable) and repellant soil. Implications of the field measurements point to the special role of OM in affecting wettability, both from the irrigation water and from soil accumulation below canopies. Implications for agriculture are that a modified approach for drip system design should be adopted for open area crops and orchards, and taking into account the OM components both in the soil and in the applied waters.
