In line with the growth of interests at the study of cross-cultural pragmatics, however, the study comparison between Indonesian and American culture has not been presented adequately in the terms of advice-giving. Advice-giving strategies in Indonesian culture and American culture with the focus on a close relationship domain are the focus of this research. Specifically, it compares the advice-giving of native Indonesian speakers in television series entitled ‘Tetangga Masa Gitu?’ on Net TV with native English American characters which depicted on NBC TV channel entitled ‘Friends’. Moreover, this study attempts to identify the similarities and differences between both objects. The data are from six episodes of the two. Qualitative research method is used to conduct this research. This research describes the pattern of the advice-giving speech act realization from the characters of two television series and compares both cultures. The findings show that advice giving in Indonesian and American cultures is classified into giving support, giving suggestions, and stating prohibition. Generally, advice-giving in Indonesian culture tends to be indirect since it is crucial to save hearer's face. In American culture, direct strategies are mostly chosen as it is a matter to show one’s freedom of self-expression. Most of advice-giving in American cultures include related facts to strengthen the illocutionary force.

As gay culture is strongly connected to the collectivity, the friendship among minority groups like gay people has become fascinating to identify. By focusing on how and why the friendship is portrayed through the gay television series, this study incorporates semiotic approach to identify the friendship among gay shown by the American gay television series in 2000s. The observation of the gay television series have revealed that friendship among gay people plays a significant role in gay culture. The research findings show that the depiction of friendship through the gay TV series symbolizes similar values and vision shared among gay people in order to reach solidarity. Additionally, strong friendship as a binding value is always the feature shown by oppressed minority groups in a society. Keywords: Gay, Television Series, 2000s, Friendship, America Culture

The study of intercultural communication within large cultures is particularly relevant in the 21st century in an era of globalization. Nowadays, thanks to the development of new information channels, such as social networks, as well as public diplomacy, branding of culture and art, popularization of national cultural traditions has become an integral part of the cultural diplomacy of Latin American countries. Despite globalization that has led to the global hybridization of television production, Latin American television series still retain the characteristics of unique products, introducing the foreign viewer to the culture and traditions of the Latin American region. In the 21st century, leading Latin American TV companies have changed the content of TV series aimed at different groups of target audiences. Social topics related to inequality, the emergence of civil society, problems of young people, and criminalization of society have found their way beyond the Latin American continent and have received a strong response in European countries. The Netflix site has become an important communication channel for Latin American television serial products. Television series, as the main marketing product of the leading Latin American media conglomerates, have contributed to the development of intercultural communication with European target audiences, where Latin American television stations have found similar social and cultural features and have become a kind of brand of this television genre. The popularity of Latin American serial products in Europe is due to the emergence of hybrid series and joint Latin American-European production of this type of entertainment television products. The article explores the stages of Latin American TV series' distribution in European countries and their impact on intercultural communication between Latin America and Europe.

There have been many studies on race relations between African-American and White-American or Asian-American and White-American. However, there are few studies regarding the portrayal of these three races in media, such as film. The purpose of this study is to expose the Watchmen (2019) television series’ African-American superhero narrative and its racial relationship between white Americans, African Americans, and Vietnamese Americans (Asian Americans). In the United States, recent race relation is considered better than in the past, as proved by Obama serving the country for two terms, but the media is still preserving each race’s labels. This study argues that this series is proof of racist behavior in media. This qualitative study uses narrative and non-narrative to analyze the data gained from the series. This television series, uncommonly, shows the White-American as the villain while the African American as the hero, which makes this series worth analyzing. The series finally attained a complex racial relationship when a Vietnamese-American character was introduced. Racial stereotypes are frequently depicted in popular culture, including movies and television shows. Consequently, it is interesting to investigate its intricacy in light of white supremacy. This series presents several shots and events indicating a racist community, even from the very beginning of the series. Thus, this study argues that the series does not portray White-American as a villain but perpetuates the stereotypes of African-Americans and Asian-American.

IntroductionPersonality disorders comprise a set of diagnosis characterized by inflexible, pervasive and enduring patterns of cognition, affect, behavioural and social interaction. The status of research on the personality among different cultures implies the universality of traits and disorders, as well as, their measuresacross cultures.ObjectivesTo study the prevalence of personality disorders in foreigner patients.MethodsIn this retrospective case series, clinicaldata was collected from 40 patients who were hospitalized at the short-stay inpatient psychiatric service of the Príncipe de Asturias University Hospital during 2018.ResultsNineteen (47.5%) patients were European, ten (25%) were from South America, nine (22.5%) were Africanand two (5%) were Asian. Eight patients were diagnosed of diverse personality disorders. Seven (87.5%) of them were European, and only one (12.5%) was from South America.ConclusionsThis case series suggests various directions for future research. The fact that patients diagnosed with personalitydisorders were mainly European could indicate diverse conclusions. It would question the universality of personality disorders out of a Euro-american frame of reference. It would also point out the difficulty of diagnosing personality disorders, taking into consideration language, awareness of cultural values, traditions, interactional patterns, and social norms. More studies of traits and personality are needed, taking into account the culture and the society in which patients have grown and in which they currently live.DisclosureNo significant relationships.

The present dissertation aims at analyzing the construction of American adolescent culture through teen-targeted television series and the shift in perception that occurs as a consequence of the translation process. In light of the recent changes in television production and consumption modes, largely caused by new technologies, this project explores the evolution of Italian audiences, focusing on fansubbing (freely distributed amateur subtitles made by fans for fan consumption) and social viewing (the re-aggregation of television consumption based on social networks and dedicated platforms, rather than on physical presence). These phenomena are symptoms of a sort of ‘viewership 2.0’ and of a new type of active viewing, which calls for a revision of traditional AVT strategies. Using a framework that combines television studies, new media studies, and fandom studies with an approach to AVT based on Descriptive Translation Studies (Toury 1995), this dissertation analyzes the non-Anglophone audience’s growing need to participation in the global dialogue and appropriation process based on US scheduling and informed by the new paradigm of convergence culture, transmedia storytelling, and affective economics (Jenkins 2006 and 2007), as well as the constraints intrinsic to multimodal translation and the different types of linguistic and cultural adaptation performed through dubbing (which tends to be more domesticating; Venuti 1995) and fansubbing (typically more foreignizing). The study analyzes a selection of episodes from six of the most popular teen television series between 1990 and 2013, which has been divided into three ages based on the different modes of television consumption: top-down, pre-Internet consumption (Beverly Hills, 90210, 1990 – 2000), emergence of audience participation (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, 1997 – 2003; Dawson’s Creek, 1998 – 2003), age of convergence and Viewership 2.0 (Gossip Girl, 2007 – 2012; Glee, 2009 – present; The Big Bang Theory, 2007 - present).

This work aims to examine the setting of Latin-american cultural identity towards televisual production, as it is presented in public, cultural and/or educational medias. The starting point is the concept that Latin-americanity questions are poorly approached by Brazilian private media, considering the multiple interests on stake at each broadcast. The question of identity is approached from Landowski, Bauman, Hall, Canclini, Martín-Barbero and Sarlo, reckoning that it is built based on difference, through interaction with the other and, also, it is defined as such due to its historical development. Having the discursive semiotics of European inspiration as theoretic-methodological basis, the premises of Saussure, Hjelmslev, Greimas, Fontanille, Duarte and Castro, that are widely developed by the COMTV research group, are presented. As empirical objective, the limited TV series Os latino-americanos, produced by Televisión América Latina (TAL), was selected as research corpus. TAL unites audiovisual content from several Latin America independent producers, releasing these productions in its website and distributing them to associated TV channels all over the continent, majorly public, cultural and/or educational ones. In Brazil, the limited series aired on TV Escola, Canal Futura and TV Câmara. The chosen program has a factual profile and it has twelve episodes, each of them showing the identity of a Latin America country. In this sense, the general objective is to verify which traits are common to these different settings, and responsible for the Latin-americanity identity representation.

ABSTRACTThis thesis situates the Harry Potter books into the greater body of food studies and into the extant children's literary tradition through an examination of how food can be used to understand cultural identity. Food is a biological need, but because we have created social rules and rituals around food consumption and sharing, there is more to eating than simple nutritional value. The Harry Potter series is as much about overcoming childhood adversity, and good versus evil, as it is about magic, and food in the Harry Potter series is both abundant and relevant to the narrative, context, and themes of the books. Sweets such as candy, puddings, and cakes, help construct both wizard and Muggle identity in addition to serving as a bridge between readers and characters. How the characters use sweets to create and reinforce friendships or exclude those who do not belong is important, especially since children usually lack other cultural capital and, in their worlds, food is reward, treat, and punishment. Examples of this are shown in the scene where Harry first travels on the Hogwarts Express, in the ways the Dursleys deny Harry birthday celebrations, and in how holidays are celebrated by the witches and wizards in the series. The sharing of food in the novels builds tensions, creates bonds, and codes different characters as "acceptable" or "unacceptable" based on their willingness, or refusal, to share food. Teatime and feasting are examples of how food is shared by analogous and disparate groups of people in the series. Tea is served most often by those in subordinate positions of power, but is one way in which the characters can socialize and create community. Feasts at the beginning and end of the school term bookmark the year by immersing students and faculty into a shared world at first, and then by sending them back to their families, aware of their own triumphs and accomplishments. When feasts are used to unite outside groups, such as before the Triwizard Tournament, the ways that different foods are embraced or rejected serve to reinforce identity and inclusion.Using cultural studies methods in conjunction with food studies and Reader-Response critical theory, this thesis argues that food in the Harry Potter series represents the socially constructed identities of the characters within the texts, and also serves to bridge the gap between the readers and the characters.

The purpose of this Ph.D. thesis is to study the evolution of the editorial lines and the programming strategies implemented by the North American traditional TV channels (NBC, CBS, ABC) between 2004 and 2014. This research focuses on the TV series sector which has a prominent place among the programs these TV channels offer. In the early 2000s, this cultural industry faced a changeover in the competitive environment which led the nature of TV series to be re-oriented. As a matter of fact, NBC Channel, yet initiator of « quality television » programming, saw its audience numbers dramatically reduce, allowing its competitor ABC to gain ground through critical and major commercial successes. The present analysis takes the view that during the following years the quantity of fiction programs with an educational and recreational approach decreased. Namely, fictions evolving in a realistic context, were abandoned in favour of entertainment programs turning to escapism and using spectacular effects close to the Hollywood production model. Then, under the leadership of ABC, one of the Disney channels, a new cycle of symbolic production arose that could be called « Escape Television ». This restructuration of the offer is here shown as a response to the change of demand turning to a « post-networks » era. This period is characterized by the decline in the audience numbers as well as the growth of VoD. From there on, the traditional TV channels no longer targeted a national audience as a key priority but aimed to attract a worldwide public used to obtaining their content from internet, often illegally. The present approach, both historical and socio-economic is mainly based on the analysis of four successful TV series: Lost, The Office, The Good Wife and Person of Interest

AbstractWhat happens to a squeezer, a coffee maker, a corkscrew, when they leave the kitchen and become part of a film set? What happens when material culture is transformed into visual culture? What new roles, meanings and connections to the subject, do objects find themselves constructing in the content continuum of virtual media? This paper attempts to answer, albeit partially, these questions by using a specific case study, namely the analysis of the presence of some of the most famous Italian design objects, the kitchen objects by Alessi, within the American filmography of the last twenty years. The ultimate aim is to reason in terms of meaning and narrativity according to the methods proposed by sociosemiotics and cultural studies, in order to identify new characteristics and functions that design can perform within an experiential context that is already dominant: the world of images.

[This Proceedings paper was revised and published in the 2019 issue of the journal Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology, Volume 16] Aim/Purpose: Little is known of the cultural competence or leadership styles of a minority owned newspaper. This autoethnography serves to benchmark one early 1990s example. Background: I focused on a series of flashbacks to observe an African American weekly newspaper editor-in-chief for whom I reported to 25 years ago. In my reflections I sought to answer these questions: How do minorities in entrepreneurial organizations view their own identity, their cultural competence? What degree of this perception is conveyed fairly and equitably in the community they serve? Methodology: Autoethnography using both flashbacks and article artifacts applied to the leadership of an early 1990s African American weekly newspaper. Contribution: Since a literature gap of minority newspaper cultural competence examples is apparent, this observation can serve as a benchmark to springboard off older studies like that of Barbarin (1978) and that by examining the leadership styles and editorial authenticity as noted by The Chicago School of Media Theory (2018), these results can be used for comparison to other such minority owned publications. Findings: By bringing people together, mixing them up, and conducting business any other way than routine helped the Afro-American Gazette, Grand Rapids, proudly display a confidence sense of cultural competence. The result was a potentiating leadership style, and this style positively changed the perception of culture, a social theory change example. Recommendations for Practitioners: For the minority leaders of such publications, this example demonstrates effective use of potentiating leadership to positively change the perception of the quality of such minority owned newspapers. Recommendations for Researchers: Such an autoethnography could be used by others to help document other examples of cultural competence in other minority owned newspapers. Impact on Society: The overall impact shows that leadership at such minority owned publications can influence the community into a positive social change example. Future Research: Research in the areas of culture competence, leadership, within minority owned newspapers as well as other minority alternative publications and websites can be observed with a focus on what works right as well as examples that might show little social change model influence. The suggestion is to conduct the research while employed if possible, instead of relying on flashbacks.

The American Indian Culture as Design project seeks to take a detailed ethnological/anthropological study of the Crow Tribe’s traditional culture and identify opportunities for an alternative mindset in terms of architectural design and planning. The project aims to discover multiple aspects of traditional culturemore rooted in the region of Montana thatcan similarly be applied and used to generatea more appropriate current context for designin the region. Accomplishing this task includes leveraging more appropriate uses of passive strategies, site planning, community planning, and regional cultural significance to persuasively address existing strategies that may be misplaced. The tools used to accomplish these goals were a series of literature and systematic drawings and analysis.

This presentation advances a case study for an ongoing intercultural animation project which seeks to meaningfully educate New Zealand Tauiwi (the country's diverse groups, including migrants and refugees) on the values, customs and protocols (Tikanga) of Māori (the indigenous people of Aotearoa New Zealand). Ako For Niños (‘education for children’), implemented by a migrant social services organisation and media-design team, introduces Latin American Tauiwi to Tikanga through an animated children’s series, developed with a community short story writing competition and co-design with a kaitiaki (Māori guardian/advisor). Māori are recognised in Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the founding document of New Zealand) as partners with Pākeha (European New Zealanders), and Māori knowledge and Tikanga are important to society and culture in Aotearoa. Notwithstanding, there has been a historic lack of attention paid to developing meaningful understandings of Māori perspectives for New Zealand Tauiwi. Ako For Niños endeavours to address current shortages of engaging resources on Māori worldviews for Tauiwi communities, create opportunities for Tauiwi to benefit from Māori epistemologies, and foster healthy community relationships between Māori and Latin American Tauiwi. Through the project’s short story competition, Tauiwi were given definitions of Tikanga through a social media campaign, then prompted to write a children’s tale based on one of these in their native language. This encouraged Tauiwi to gain deeper comprehension of Māori values, and interpret Tikanga into their own expressions. Three winning entries were selected, then adapted into stop-motion and 2D animations. By converting the stories into aesthetically pleasing animated episodes, the Tikanga and narratives could be made more captivating for young audiences and families, appealing to the senses and emotions through visual storytelling, sound-design, and music. The media-design team worked closely with a kaitiaki during this process to better understand and communicate the Tikanga, adapting and co-designing the narratives in a culturally safe process. This ensured Māori knowledge, values, and interests were disseminated in correct and respectful ways. We argue for the importance of creative participation of Tauiwi, alongside co-design with Māori to produce educational intercultural design projects on Māori worldviews. Creative participation encourages new cultural knowledge to be imaginatively transliterated into personal interpretations and expressions of Tauiwi, allowing indigenous perspectives to be made more meaningful. This meaningful engagement with Māori values, which are more grounded in relational and human-centred concepts, can empower Tauiwi to feel more cared for and interconnected with their new home and culture. Additionally, co-design with Māori can help to honour Te Tiriti, and create spaces where Tauiwi, Pākeha and Māori interface in genuine partnership with agency (rangatiratanga), enhancing the credibility and value of outcomes. This session unpacks the contexts informing, and methods undertaken to develop the series, presenting current outcomes and expected directions (including a screening and exhibition). We will also highlight potential for the methodology to be applied in new ways in future, such as with other Tauiwi communities, different cultural knowledge, and increased collaborative co-design with Māori.

Proper names reflect the interaction between society and language. They identify unique entities and are used to refer to them. At the same time, it is not uncommon of proper names to serve as a source for word-formation. It should be noted, however, that while in a natural language (notably English) proper names mostly give rise to denominal verbs or adjectives, terminologies are different. Most units that count as terms are nouns, which makes their semantics somewhat special. The paper originates as one of a series towards a typology of sociological terminology and endeavors to analyze the terms whose etymology refers to a proper name (that is, eponymic terms). The research poses the following questions: whether this type of terms is common in Social Science, what are their structural and semantic distinctions as well as mechanisms behind their motivation, whether they are culture specific. The terms were manually retrieved from a set of data of 2500 terminological units extracted from a number of dictionaries and other sources. They were further grouped by structural criteria and the nature of eponymous components and made subject to morphological and semantic analyses. The research shows that structurally eponymic terms are morphological derivatives or two-(or more)-word compounds, with their prevalence estimated at 2%. The authors come to conclusion that terms of this type feature substantial diversity with regard to their eponymous components; they are motivated through the combination of encyclopedic knowledge of the entity, represented by the eponym, and the semantics of derivational morphemes or appellative components. Mythology-based eponymous terminology is represented by two groups, the first tracing back to Antiquity or biblical tradition, and the second of later origin, which requires a specific cultural experience for the meaning to be retrieved. Further analysis shows that the latter type along with toponym-based terminology is culture-specific in relation to American culture.

With globalization, multilingualism has replaced monolingualism as the prevalent paradigm across the disciplines, from sociolinguistics to linguistic anthropology to applied linguistics to education, be it from the angle of superdiversity (Blommaert and Rampton 2011), metrolingualism (Pennycook and Otsuji 2015) or translanguaging (García and Wei 2014). We are witnessing an era where multilingualism from below, which has always existed, is increasingly supported by multilingualism from above in language policy and planning via plurilingual pluricultural competence (Council of Europe 2018), innovative language pedagogy such as Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) (Coyle, Hood and Marsh 2010), and creative use of English as a Lingua Franca (Seidlhofer and Widdowson 2009; Jenkins 2017). However, it is not just English that serves this purpose, but also French and Arabic in the Mediterranean region, and Spanish (Godenzzi 2006) or Chinese further afield (Li 2006). The study examines these new language constellations at the example of three multilingual degree programs at a small, private university in Spain with a strong international projection, a multilingual student population, and equally multilingual / multicultural faculty. Superimposed on the already multilingual and multivarietal structure of the Spanish peninsula, with its largest foreign cohort speaking Latin-American varieties, the languages and language combinations emerging from this study include students' home languages, languages of study, lingua francas, and creative language practices. It was the purpose of the study to identify affordances and challenges in developing translingual transcultural competence (Geisler et al. 2007), that is, the ability to operate between languages, reflect on the world and self through another language and culture, as well as develop critical language awareness and social sensitivity. Based on a survey conducted among students from fresher to graduating class, interviews and focus groups with students, teachers, and administrators, as well as a document analysis of study plans and language requirements, the study aims to document emerging language practices and translingual transcultural competence as well as the factors that support or hinder this development. While English and Spanish are clearly the dominant languages, third and fourth languages play a significant role among both students and faculty. It will be argued that translingual dispositions (Lee and Canagarajah 2019) are widely held, and that instead of cultivating a series of discrete linguistic stills, “translanguaging is the language of the future” as one of the subjects quipped.

Print-media needs of Hispanics in non-metropolitan areas of America are often overlooked. One newspaper editor in Idaho found Hispanics to be invisible in her small community and its newspaper, except in crime reports. So she began publishing the bilingual Idaho Unido. This study addresses the publisher’s business model and motivation for publication. It is based on two research streams: theories of the press from Siebert, Peterson, and Schramm in 1956 through McQuail in 2005 and cultural maintenance perspectives. The Idaho Unido story represents a revelatory case, demonstrating the power of a motivated individual to essentially subvert the dominant media paradigm by creating a successful, independent publication specifically intended to serve the information, entertainment and cultural-identity needs of a small, marginalized population living in widely distributed rural areas.

The disjuncture between a territorial infrastructure and local cultures is most overtly witnessed in the development of pipelines, which are large infrastructural conduits used to transport oil or gas, deployed primarily between points of extraction and refining. This article examines the typology of the pipeline and its relationship to both territorial and local systems for their eventual future productions. Specifically, it focuses on the South American “Uruguayana-Porto Alegre Pipeline”, which will unify a series of separate pipelines developed over the past two decades. Spanning 3,100 kilometers across Argentina, Bolivia, Uruguay, and Brazil, and linking northern regions to the southern cone once completed, this energy ring will redistribute flows of energy, wealth, and people across the territory. As new pipelines and their associated infrastructures cross the once remote hinterland, it exposes these rural settlements and local ecologies to development pressures. This case study will use two design-research projects to investigate how the pipeline can be leveraged to reassert local cultures, economies, ecologies, and values.

addresses state obligations under the African Charter concerning the provision of social services amid increasing privatisation. Since the 1980s, structural adjustment programs in Africa and Latin America have led to the decline of public social services like education and healthcare, exacerbating inequality. General Comment 7 reaffirms the importance of public social services, providing a comprehensive interpretation of human rights laws. It outlines the necessity for states to ensure quality, accessible public services through progressive taxation and effective regulation of private actors. This document serves as an advocacy tool to promote collaboration between Africa and Latin America, aiming to uphold economic, social and cultural rights for all, regardless of socio-economic status.

Public employment services have a crucial role in the search for quality jobs, worker placement, labor market adaptation, and mitigating impacts during economic transitions. Globally, these services have been leveraging on digital technologies to transform, and those in Latin America and the Caribbean are no exception. These technologies are enabling the creation of new channels to expand outreach and service delivery, centralizing, and sharing data, facilitating collaboration, and improving processes. However, rapid technological advancements also pose risks in terms of access and equity. For instance, improper use of artificial intelligence (AI) may exacerbate existing labor market inequalities. Therefore, it is essential for public employment services to harness the potential of digital technologies while mitigating associated risks. To address these challenges, these institutions must consider five key dimensions. Firstly, they need to be aware of the strategic implications of digital technologies. Secondly, they need to manage the impact of technology on their administrative operations. Thirdly, they must effectively utilize technology in their interactions with the public. Fourthly, they should undergo organizational changes to enhance agility and adopt different structures, skills, and cultures. Lastly, they must grow into their role of data processing organizations to take advantage of new opportunities and tackle new challenges. This document provides relevant information on the opportunities and challenges of digitalization in public employment services in Latin America and the Caribbean across these dimensions, as well as their level of digital maturity. The data and results presented in this study are based on a survey conducted by the IDB's SEALC Network in 2019, which was expanded in 2022 to include fifteen countries in the region. Additionally, the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the digitalization efforts of public employment services in the region is evaluated. This information is relevant for public employment services as it enables them to identify strengths and weaknesses in their digital transformation processes.

This study challenges the current design of forest resource use contracts in Latin America. Radical rethinking of forest resource contracts is imperative, due to the constraints that now face the successful achievement of forest policy objectives of economic development and conservation of forest resources. The constraints identified in this study include: 1) financial incentives that favor selective logging rather than management in tropical forests; 2) lack of a technical basis for silviculture in neo-tropical forests; 3) governments that lack the administrative capacity and political will to impose management; 4) cultural and social norms that fail to recognize local users of forest resources. This study is intended to serve as a turning point in forest concession policy and provide useful guidelines for policy analysts, non-governmental organizations, and multilateral lending institutions interested in facilitating this process. A comprehensive rethinking of forest resource contracts will greatly benefit all those relying on the economic development and conservation of forests in Latin America.

Who would have said that in the hands of creatives, designers, artists and entrepreneurs would be part of the response to the development challenges of Latin America and the Caribbean? This report is part of the Inter-American Development Bank's (IDB) Demand Solutions: Ideas for Improving Lives, which aims to give visibility to the region's creatives and to position creativity as an integral element of economic and social development. In 2015 the cultural and creative industries (CCI), which are part of what the IDB calls the Orange Economy, generated 1.9 million jobs in Latin America and the Caribbean, and revenues of $124 billion. It is estimated that by 2020 creativity will be the third most demanded skill by companies when selecting their employees. It should be noted that most startups in the region, although little known, have a high social and economic impact in traditional sectors such as health, education and transportation. This report discusses how creativity continues to be the main protagonist to face challenges upon the changes in the way of working and producing goods and services, as well as the indispensable convergence between the analogue and digital. This report highlights 50 of the 300 innovative projects with the greatest social impact in the region, grouped according to 8 sectors of the CCI’s: Architecture, Handcrafts, Design, Media, Fashion, Music, Creative Services and Software / Digital Platforms, in 12 Countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru and the Dominican Republic. At the same time it also describes the most important trends in these 8 sectors.

The study provides sector-based and global analyses, revealing a dual dynamic of diversification and concentration in the production, distribution, and broadcasting of cultural and information content. Audiovisual content broadcasting, both free and pay, demonstrates national dominance but faces challenges from foreign groups. Financialization and concentration affect media and cultural goods industries, posing risks to diversity of opinion. The dominance of North American groups in digital services, particularly in advertising, is noted, impacting traditional media revenues. Telecom operators lead the French market, with regulators monitoring concentration dynamics for potential negative impacts on diversity.

This paper presents some of the background research that contributed to the discussions within the Inter-American Development Bank's policy and strategy regarding indigenous health issues. The paper's conceptual approach and good practice research helped focus the discussion on the importance of intercultural health practices to promote indigenous peoples' access to allopathic health as well as to strengthen those traditional health practices based on indigenous peoples' own knowledge, culture, social networks, institutions and ways of life, that have shown their effectiveness. The paper presents five intercultural health experiences (in Suriname, Guatemala, Chile, Ecuador and Colombia) that are considered best practices in the field. Although poorly financed, these experiences highlight the significance to indigenous peoples of health models that bridge the gap between state-financed allopathic health services and their own indigenous health systems. This study however, does not represent a medical trial on the efficacy or efficiency of intercultural health models.

With a few exceptions, research on ride-hailing has focused on North American cities. Previous studies have identified the characteristics and preferences of ride-hailing adopters in a handful of cities. However, given their marked geographical focus, the relevance and applicability of such work to the practice of transport planning and regulation in cities in the Global South is minimal. In developing cities, the entrance of new transport services follows very different trajectories to those in North America and Europe, facing additional social, economic, and cultural challenges, and involving different strategies. Moreover, the determinants of mode choice might be mediated by social issues such as the perception of crime and the risk of sexual harassment in public transportation, which is often experienced by women in large cities such as Mexico. This paper examines ride-hailing in the Metropolitan Area of Mexico City, unpacking the characteristics of its users, the ways they differ from users of other transport modes, and the implications for urban mobility. Building on the household travel survey from 2017, our analytical approach is based on a set of categorical models. Findings suggest that gender, age, education, and being more mobile are determinants of ride-hailing adoption. The analysis shows that ride-hailing is used for occasional trips, and it is usually done for leisure and health trips as well as for night trips. The study also reflects on ride-hailings implications for the way women access the city.
