Artru, Francois. "La circulation dans les Alpes à l'époque romaine : l'exemple des Alpes Cottiennes." Thesis, Besançon, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012BESA1034.
Повний текст джерелаThe study addresses the Mont-Genèvre road and the Cottian Alps district as playing a major rôle in the transalpine traffic during the Roman period. A general chapter upon alpine circulation in the Antiquity reviews the following subjects: recent paleoclimatic data, control of an itinerary in the genesis of preroman tribes’ settlement, actual knowledge of Alps by Romans, and practical traveling conditions through mountains.Relationships between politico-military events, territorial limits and road network are analysed along five centuries of Roman presence. The idea of a vast preroman kingdom ruled by Cottius is not shared. The transition from independence to the status of roman prefecture is viewed as a preliminary decision of August and not as a final event of the Alps conquest. Ammianus alleged hostility of Cottius to Rome, but his testimony has to be rejected. Pline’s allusion to the twelve cottian cities which were not hostile is explained by supposing an early transitory state of the prefecture. It is explained how the development of the road network allowed promotion of some cities to municipal status, favoured romanisation and boosted the economy of high valleys. An intensification of pastoralism through the practice of transhumance is suggested. Related aspects of the alpine traffic, as cursus publicus, Quadragesima Galliarum and religious beliefs of travellers are examined. Evidences for the existence of a ‘Mont-Genèvre roads system’, constructed since the time of the prefecture, are derived from archaeological registries and local exploration. Concerning the road of the Durance valley, within cottian frontiers, it appears to follow a quite different course from the one proposed until now. Arguments are gathered favouring the existence of a roman road running across the Petit Mont-Cenis and leading to the Rhenan limes. The road which very likely runs over the col de Larche (or de la Madeleine) and through the Ubaye valley appears to join easily the Durance valley contrary to some previous opinions. Two other routes of the Mont-Genèvre system are studied in detail. One crosses the col du Lautaret and its two remaining sections are carefully examined, namely the Porte Romaine de Bons and the rock-cutted segment near Bourg d’Oisans. The second road, between Luc-en-Diois and the Mont-Genèvre, appears only on the Tabula Peutingeriana. Graphical examination of the drawing and local investigation does not allow a definitive conclusion upon the reality of this route
Ardisson, Sandrine. "Etude des ensembles thermaux de Cimiez (Nice, Alpes maritimes)." Thesis, Lyon, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016LYSE2002.
Повний текст джерелаThe treble complex of thermae which is assembled in the district of Cimiez is the most important testimony of the antique town; nevertheless, no study had been so far thoroughly realized. The analysis of the three thermae which we are proposing is founded upon a full and critical new examination of the old excavations and finds data, as well as a complete inventory of the vestiges remaining on the place. Although it is well known by the public since a long time, the thermae complex of Cimiez holds a great part that is still unknown, such as their absolute and relative chronology and also the ground of their assembling. The review of some part of the archeological material brought by old excavations which were conducted without stratigraphy nor exhaustivity, enabled many universitary studies but it did not bring concrete data which would have enable a relation between them, the building and its evolution. Thus, we tried to propose a periodicity of these buildings and re-buildings, from, on one side, contacts and relations between each building structure and, on the other side, a reflection about the technology and the material that was used. Our study concerns also the organization and evolution of the thermae district with its sanitary office, from the setting in of the hydraulic network (aqueduct and waterworks), first step toward the district modelling, until the time of its full use when the three thermae worked together. Studying how long it was working, what were the changes in the users moves and even in the buildings typology brings interesting data about the evolution in the way of bathe and more generally about the social uses on the scale of the Empire. These results enabled by the strict study of the whole vestiges remaining on the place allow us to set the analysis of the thermae complex of Cimiez in a much wider frame. Finally, these evolutions prove the continuous activity and the thermal function of this district until the late Antiquity. The results of our research can bring concrete elements for the purpose of a rehabilitation campaign which began already for the frigidarium of the north thermae with the “Plan Patrimoine Antique” and which should be urgently followed, in order to protect against obvious damage these noteworthy monuments and district which are unrivalled in the Alpes Maritimes department

Повний текст джерелаThis work presents a catalogue of archeological sites and equipments related to the production of olive oil and wine in the present Département des Alpes-Maritimes. By the end of 2015, 70 sites had been indexed, including 250 archeological items , mostly concerning pressing facilities and some crushing mills (molae oleariae); all of which have been recorded on individual data sheets. The major development of the rural press settlements was found at the beginning of the Roman Empire. While most wineries stopped producing during the 2nd century A.C. or in the early 3rd century, the production of olive oil, after a slowing down in the 3rd century, experienced a revival during the Low Empire and until the Late Antiquity. The analysis has given a global first insight into the economic and technological dimensions of olive oil and wine production in the region

Повний текст джерелаArchaeological and paleo-environmental research carried out in the Southern Alps attest to the existence of pastoral practices continuous from the Neolithic period. The latter brought about a constant opening-up of the environment which resulted in the formation of present-day landscapes. The signals sent back by archaeology, history and the paleo-environment concerning rearing practices and activities having had an impact on the landscape since the Iron Age are re-examined through a synthesis of the current state of knowledge. Analysis of existing documentation is used to ascertain sources of impact on the landscape and relationships between pastoral practices, settlement lands and areas of economic exchange. Comprehensive study of the territory and anthropic remains is carried out using the Napoleonic cadastral survey and orthophotographic coverage. The data bases built using these supports are enriched by the incorporation of environmental data taken from GIS bases connected to environmental contexts. This data set provides a new corpus of archaeological information which enables us to apprehend the spatial and qualitative diversity of pastoral remains. Three case-studies provide information concerning the weight of Iron Age and Roman occupation in the sub-Alpine floors. Two of these allow consideration of the construction of Iron Age and Roman territorial areas and their subsequent development. A Gallic sanctuary located at an altitude of 1800m, dedicated to hero and nature-worship, and another sanctuary located on a pass illustrate the importance of orography within the mental constructs of the Mercantour populations

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis delves into the study of Timagenes of Alexandria, a historian from the Augustan era, and his impact on Pompey Trogue’ Philippic Histories, Strabo's Geography, and Pliny the Elder's Natural History. By comparing ancient texts, latin and greek, we've discovered five new fragments of Timagenes' historical works, that merit inclusion in F. Jacoby’s collection. Thesefragments delve into Gaulish and Alpine history, a subject that Timagenes explored with particular interest through ethnography and ancient legends. Additionally, they reference the anabasis of Alexander, a topic Timagenes was familiar with through the works of Cleitarchus. The portrait of Timagenes that emerges from these fragments is that of an Alexandrian scholareager to impart Hellenistic knowledge to Roman cultural circles. It was in Rome that he undertook to teach Attic rhetoric and wrote his historical works, all while maintaining close ties with his hometown, Alexandria. From a historical perspective, Timagenes emerges as a worthy heir to the greek historiographical tradition, particularly that represented by Herodotus and Theopompus. Timagenes’ work exerted significant influence on the literary productions of the Augustan era, especially in the field of Gaulish and Alpine history: indeed, Pompey Trogue incorporated Timagenes’ accounts into the central books of his historical work (XXXXXII), while Strabo cited the historian in Book IV of his Geography

Повний текст джерелаThe region of the moyenne Durance, a great zone of transition between the Mediterranean land and the alpine zone, is a region which is relatively badly characterised for the roman period in relation to trade, despite a network of important communication links (pass of via domitia) and a dense river network (the Durance). The starting point of this work was the detailed study of the secondary agglomeration of the Bourget at L'Escale (04) thus the installation of the banks as close as possible to the Durance, explained most probably by it's function as a harbour. The ceramic furniture found on this site, which covers the end of the 1st century up to the beginning of the 5th century, forms a basic idea of the materials used during this period. This collection was also increased largely by the study of many other collections from different sites and established productions in the region which also interest us. This work allows the understanding of the make-up and evolution of the usage of the dresser in haute Provence for this period, and to show evidence for the relationships and correspondences maintained by this region and the surrounding regions

Повний текст джерелаThis study attempts to resolve the questions relating to the origins of provincia Alpium Maritimarum, its creation and evolution in terms of the cities and the populations within it up to the late Antiquity. Provincial power, territorial borders and the limits of its cities, the judicial status of its communities, the onomastics of its populations, and an assessment of the auxiliary troupes stationed in its capital are researched in this paper. Furthermore, this thesis also examines the various themes relating to municipal life, and the channels of communication within the province. Nikaia, in the locality of Marseilles and often improperly included within the limits of Alpes Maritimae, is discussed here in depth. The author addresses the question of its location, the shape and form of municipal life within it, and the territory it occupied. This study is based primarily on epigraphic sources, which have been compiled and classified here by civitas. A further two chapters contain, for one, a listing of inscriptions discovered in the territory of Nikaia and, for the other, a record of the milestones observed within the limits of Alpes Maritimae. Each inscription is recorded and presented according to the standards of the discipline. Maps, photographs and manuscript extracts relating to and supporting the epigraphic evidence are also included in this paper, with the aim of providing as much documentation as possible to the academic community regarding the subject
