The subject of this paper is a celebrated incident in Constantius' Life of St. Germanus. The work is a near contemporary piece, evidently drawing on eye witness accounts. It was composed in Gaul about 480 A.D. Constantius provides several interesting and possibly historical details concerning conditions in Britain during the transition from Celtic independence to Saxon dominance. St. Germanus visited Britain in 429 to combat the Pelagian heresy. While there, according to Constantius, he led the Britons in a military victory over invading Picts and Saxons, the Alleluja Victory. He thereafter passed into a prominent position in British legend and history. This biography of St. Germanus and particularly the incident of the miracle victory have long been the focus of a lively historical debate. Incidental details in Constantius' work including references to cities, synods, and men bearing vaguely Roman titles in Britain have been accepted (rather uncritically) as genuine. Others have rejected the work as historically valueless and suggested that the Alleluja victory is simply an allegory based on Biblical miracles such as the fall of the walls of Jericho.

The alleluia was the last proper chant of the Mass to be standardized. Through the twelfth century and beyond, different churches assigned different alleluias to the same Masses, and the composition of new alleluia chants flourished throughout the latter Middle Ages. The Masses from Easter to the octave of Pentecost witness this. A collation of ca. 200 manuscripts demonstrates that identical series of chants are to be found only in sources emanating from the same church (or churches in the same city). Most of the alleluia chants from the eleventh century onward have New Testament or non-scriptural texts, as opposed to the psalmic texts of the earlier post-Pentecostal alleluias. The musical style is varied, ranging from the richly melismatic manner traditionally associated with the alleluia to much more modest melodies with few or no large melismas. A number of the latter can be associated with the reforms of Guillaume de Volpiano at Dijon and in Normandy in the years after 1000.

Te synagogalne elementy przechodzą do chrześcijaństwa.

It is well known that the two alleluias cited in the title are textings of the same tune – indeed they are only two of many textings of that tune. Along with the alleluia Video celos, these two were sung over a rather short space of time in the liturgical year: on the feasts of Christmas, St Stephen's and Epiphany. It happens that for another purpose, involving the transmission of chant in later manuscripts, I have collated the alleluia Dies sanctificatus and alleluia Vidimus stellam in over a hundred manuscripts, most of them late French sources. The choice of these manuscripts rather than others – French rather than German or English – was dictated in part by practical considerations, but also by the conviction that French sources are on the whole richer in variants and hence more revealing in the mechanics of their transmission. The approximately one hundred sources considered are a good majority of the surviving late sources, and the picture they give is, I believe, representative. In the course of this article, I will also have occasion to mention earlier manuscripts, both French and non-French. These are not the primary focus of my study, and therefore I have permitted myself many omissions in that respect. Important graduals, for example from St-Omer,2 Angers3 and Noyon,4 to name only three, have been untouched. My collation has shown a considerable number of variants, some of which are clearly regional in nature, while others are of a more ambiguous character. Having two textings of the same melody available supplies a useful control: readings that occur in both versions naturally have a strong claim to represent a true tradition, rather than a random alteration.

Abstract A set of thirteenth-century parchment fragments, including the remnants of two rolls and one manuscript codex, preserves a largely unstudied repertoire unique to medieval England. In addition to a single motet and a setting of a responsory verse, the Rawlinson Fragments preserve twelve three-voice Alleluya settings. While polyphonic Alleluyas are well known from the continental Magnus liber repertoire, these insular Alleluya settings are quite different. Most significantly, while composed on the text and pitches of plainchant, they include newly composed texts in at least one voice—that is, they are polytextual chant settings. Aspects of their musical style certainly draw on other polyphonic genres—organum, conductus, and motet. This article presents the paleographical and codicological evidence that corroborates an early date for these fragments (in the 1240s), confirms their connection to Reading Abbey, and situates their repertoire within a broader context. My analysis points to intriguing points of overlap with both the plainchant prosula tradition and the Magnus liber organa and motets. It reopens broader questions about the copying and performance practices of liturgical polyphony, including previous suggestions that motet texts may have been sung within the performance of the Magnus liber organa, regardless of the scribal copying conventions that separated organum and motet in the surviving Magnus liber manuscripts. The article also considers the role of the Rawlinson Fragments’ main scribe, Benedictine monk W. de Wicumbe, who was active within the monastic communities of Leominster and Reading as a composer of plainchant and polyphony, and as precentor, most likely in charge of his community's musical life.

AbstractOne of the earliest forms of Christian psalmody, the alleluia psalmody, is difficult to explore since in most rites it is preserved only in part. Comparisons between direct and indirect traces of alleluia psalmody from Milan, Rome, Byzantium and Gaul as well as between alleluia psalmody and other genres of chant, especially the Mass alleluia, allow some conclusions about distinctive melodic characteristics. As one result, there seem to be common features in the Italian traditions that are missing in the Gallican tradition.

The thesis considers the changing nature of funerals carried in England over the last twenty years and a possible response by Church of England ministers. Those changes are outlined in terms of the changes in venue of funerals, the changes in content and the changes in officials conducting funerals. As a theological basis for a response, the thesis examines the work of Hans Urs von Balthasar, and in particular his book Mysterium Paschale. Balthasar considers each of the three days of Easter in turn, finding particular power and importance in Holy Saturday. It is this weight that he gives to the day in which Jesus is actually dead that is important in forming a liturgical response in the carrying out of funerals. One commentator describes a Christian funeral as a remembrance of an individual’s death in the context of the Easter event: key to what we do as Christian ministers is remind people of the hope that we have because of Christ’s resurrection at Easter. However, whilst the proclamation of the meaning of Easter Sunday is vital in any Christian funeral, just as important is a taking seriously of Good Friday and Holy Saturday. These days remind us of the importance of grief and mourning in funerals. The thesis examines both the formal and informal content of funerals conducted by church ministers in England today to see how they give an appropriate understanding of the death and resurrection of Christ. The appropriate liturgical response to mourning is lament and, having considered how the three days of Easter are reflected in the actual content of the funeral, the final chapter considers the biblical notion of lament and how it may provide resources for funeral ministry.

BACKGROUND & RATIONALE Aggressive Periodontitis (AgP) is a complex multifactorial periodontal disease where genetic and environmental factors are thought to play a paramount pathogenic role. Patients with AgP are characterized by a rapid and severe periodontal destruction in mainly younger individuals. While putative perio-pathogenic bacteria constitute the primary extrinsic agent in the etiology of AgP, the risk of developing periodontal disease is not the same for all individuals, suggesting that host factors, potentially related to the genetic make-up, are involved in determining the disease susceptibility. IL-1a and IL-1b, two functionally similar molecules, have been recognized as central proinflammatory cytokines. IL-1ra is an anti-inflammatory non-signaling molecule that competes for receptor binding with IL-1a and IL-1b. The overall contribution of IL-1 to the pro-inflammatory response depends on the balance between these three molecules. Polymorphisms of the Interleukin-1 (IL-1) gene cluster family have been described in association with inter-individual differences of IL-1 levels upon bacterial challenge and they have been proposed as potential genetic markers for periodontal diseases. AIM OF THE STUDY In our previous studies, we have investigated the role of IL-1 genes in explaining the individual susceptibility to both plaque-induced gingivitis and AgP. With respect to AgP, we examined 6 polymorphisms derived from genes of the IL-1 cluster comparing 40 AgP patients with 96 periodontally healthy controls. We tested the association through both the analysis of allelic/genotypic distributions as well as by constructing a map in LD units of the candidate region 2q13–14. Our analyses highlighted the presence of recombination hot spots between the IL-1B+3954 and IL-1B-511 variants and around the IL-1RN (VNTR) marker. The multilocus modelling of association with disease gave a location for the association peak at the IL-1B+3954 marker. Moreover, haplotype analysis identified the IL-1B+3954-IL-1B-511 haplotype as the one having the lowest p-value in the region. In view of this preliminary results, we decided to further investigate the role of IL-1 cluster genes in the pathogenesis of generalized AgP. In particular, we were aware that the main limitations of our previous studies were the small number of the genetic variants investigated and the limited size of the study population. Thus, for the present study, these two constrains have been settled by implementing the study cohort as well as by covering the chromosomal region of interest with an adequate number of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). MATERIALS AND METHODS Study Population A total of 95 generalized AgP patients (29 males and 66 females, mean age 43.4 ± 7.7) were recruited among those seeking care for periodontal treatment at two different University centers: the Research Center for the Study of Periodontal Diseases, University of Ferrara (56 subjects) and the Department of Odontostomatological, Orthodontic and Surgical Disciplines, Second University of Naples, (39 subjects). Patients were enrolled for genetic genotyping only if they fulfilled the criteria for a clinical diagnosis of generalized AgP at the time of the first (initial) examination according to AAP World Workshop definition. 121 systemically healthy individuals, (60 males and 61 females, mean age 30.1 ± 4,7), were recruited as controls. They were selected if they showed no interproximal attachment loss greater than 2 mm at any of the fully erupted teeth. All subjects enrolled for the study were unrelated Caucasian Italian and chosen among current and permanent residents of Ferrara and Naples areas, respectively. Written informed consent was provided by all participants before study inclusion. The study protocol was approved by the respective local ethical committees. Genotyping Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood leukocyte using the QIAamp blood Kit (QIAGEN Inc., Germany) or a standard proteinase K digestion and phenol/chloroform extraction method. A minimum of 1g of genomic DNA (diluted in 0,2x TE buffer at 10 ng per microliter) from patients and controls was arrayed on 96-well plates and DNA concentrations were determined by fluorescence measurement with molecular probes (Invitrogen, Molecular Probes, USA). For each of the 216 samples of DNA extracted, the genotyping of the 70 polymorphisms selected was realized on Sequenom MassARRAY® platform (Sequenom, San Diego, CA), using protocol iPLEXTM. Statistical analysis A c2 test (p>0.05) was used to assess that the genotype distributions of the polymorphisms fulfilled the criteria of Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium (HWE). The analysis of the potential association between the candidate genes/regions and AgP, in the two samples considered, was verified through the application of the following specific statistical programs: The PLINK software [version 1.00] (http://pngu.mgh.harvard.edu/~purcell/plink/) was used to compare the allele counts in cases and controls by Fisher’s exact test and to calculate odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals. PLINK was also used to test for population stratification and for allelic heterogeneity between the two subgroups of subjects (from Ferrara and Naples area). From population genotype data, haplotypes were reconstructed by using PLINK toolset which implements a Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm and performs the sliding window haplotype association analysis by the Chi square test. The CHROMSCAN program (http://cedar.genetics.soton.ac.uk/pub/PROGRAMS), was used to construct a LD map in Linkage Disequilibrium Units (LDUs) which has additive distances and locations monotonic with physical and genetic maps. The level of significance was chosen as P<0.05. When necessary, P values were subject to Bonferroni’s correction for multiple comparisons. RESULTS Control for Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium After quality control, among the 70 markers selected, eight polymorphisms were excluded from further analysis because two SNPs were found to be monomorphic and six markers had a call rate less than 20%. Among the remaining sixty-two SNPs successfully characterized, three markers in the sample of affected subjects and four SNPs in the group of controls showed significant deviation from HWE. These latter SNPs were excluded from the subsequent analyses. Test for population stratification Based on the whole genome SNPs data, the 216x216 matrix of the pairwise identity-by-state (IBS) genetic distances was constructed using PLINK and used for Multidimensional Scaling (MDS). Through MDS, it was possible to obtain a graph where each point represented an individual and the two axes generated an image of the data reduced in two dimensions. The uniform distribution of points on the graph clearly indicated the absence of heterogeneity between the two subpopulations. To further check for homogeneity among populations, the Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel (CMH) test for stratified samples was also performed. At the CMH test, the most heterogeneous marker observed was the rs895497 variant which resulted not significant different in the two populations [c2 [CMH] = 2.1, p-value=0.146, OR[CMH] = 1.4 (95%CI 0.90-2.08)]. From these tests it was possible to assume that the two subpopulations sampled, Ferrara and Naples, were nearly genetically homogeneous for the investigated chromosomal region and, therefore, in the subsequent analyses, could be considered as a single group divided into cases and controls. Single-point analysis From all allelic and genotypic tests, a significant level less than 5% was found only for genotypic distribution of rs6751201 polymorphism, which maps in the tenth intron of the SEC7 homolog gene (p-value=0,025). However, this association did not hold the statistical significance after Bonferroni correction. LD structure of 2q13-14 region From the CHROMSCAN program, an LD map of the region 2q13–14 under the Malécot model for multiple markers was constructed. The coverage choice for each LDU was of four SNPs, with a mean distance between SNPs of 15.75 ± 11 Kb. The block-step structure of the candidate region was built by plotting, on the kb distances, the LDU locations obtained from: a) HapMap public data from Caucasian population, b) the entire Italian dataset, c) unaffected Italian subjects and d) AgP patients. LD maps showed very similar profiles and a close correspondence was found between the four LD maps. The chromosomal structure of the 2q13- 14 region obtained from Italian Caucasian data, that shows a total length of 16 LDUs, confirmes the profile obtained from the HapMap database. Haplotypic reconstruction On the basis of the "block-step" pattern obtained both from the LD map and from pairwise analysis, the 58 polymorphisms used have been subdivided in four regions grouping 15 (blocks 1 to 4), 10 (Blocks 5 to 8), 13 (Blocks 9 to 13) and 16 (Blocks 14 to 17) SNPs respectively. Within each region, the haplotypes have been reconstructed using the Expectation-Maximization algorithm implemented in PLINK software by means of sliding windows of size three and six (shifting 1 SNP at a time). Haplotype distributions were compared in cases and controls to test for haplotypic association with AgP. None of the possible inferred haplotypes showed a significant association with AgP at the global test. Inferred haplotypes, which contained the gene variants mapping within IL1F6 and IL1F8 (region 1, block 4, SNPs: rs879711, rs895497, rs2305150, rs1562302), demonstrated a significant or borderline association with disease (pvalues ranging from 0.028 to 0.058) both using 3 and 6 windows. Combined haplotypes consisting of SNPs mapping within IL1B (SNPs: rs3917368, rs1143634, rs1143627, rs16944) demonstrated only a very weak association with disease (p-values: 0.046 and 0.053) only for windows of size six. No significant association was found in the region where IL1A and IL1RN map. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, within the limitation of the present study, our findings failed to support the existence of a causative variant for generalized AgP within the candidate region, where IL-1A, IL-1B and IL1RN genes reside, in an Italian Caucasian population.

The dissertation's Chapter One focuses on the 'shape' of the Byzantine-rite Funeral Service for Lay-persons (= BF), an ordo whose contents (presented in Greek text with parallel English translation in Appendix I) were effectively canonized by the advent of printed euchologies in the sixteenth century. Amongst western communities of Byzantine-rite Christians (as indeed, increasingly, in Byzantine-rite homelands), this 'traditional' ordo is often abbreviated by the omission or condensation of much of its psalmody and hymnography. Chapter Two prepares for my intended interpretation and analysis of BF's complex 'Text' that incorporates intertwining penitential and resurrectional themes and is composed of the foregoing assemblage of texts, music and ritual. In laying out elements of my own methodology for interpreting and analyzing BF's liturgically-mediated theology, Chapter Two opens by insisting (following a lead from American liturgiologist, Joyce Ann Zimmerman) that BF in its entirety---texts, setting, music, and ritual---can and must be 'read' holistically as a performative 'Text' (with upper-case 'T'), having its own language and 'sign systems'; such an approach accords well with contemporary hermeneutical theories. The first of these readings, namely the interpretive endeavour to uncover BF's 'intended sense,' occupies Chapter Three. Although this operation is relatively time-consuming, its conclusions are straight-forward. BF encompasses a number of sombre 'themes of lamentation' (lament for a mythic 'Paradise Lost'; separation from and farewell to the deceased; impending judgment; and memento mori) that are set alongside other, more hopeful 'themes of celebration' (rest from the cares of life; hope of a future resurrection; and unending life in God's 'Eternal Memory'). In Chapter Four, I prepare for undertaking an analytical 'second reading' of 'BF-as-Text' (in Chapter Five) that will try and justify, from a practical pastoral standpoint the presence in BF of a 'lamentation layer'; the case against BF's detractors is to be strengthened by demonstrating how lamentation, interpreted as theologically justifiable in Chapter Three, is also pastorally essential to BF's 'human adequacy'. Psychologically, the bereaved face the need to try and accomplish their so-called "grief work" (Freud's trauerarbeit ) which dictates that an eventual recovery from bereavement is predicated on overcoming: (1) denial of the reality of a particular death; (2) suppression of thoughts and feelings regarding the deceased; (3) unhealthy clinging to the deceased's presence and memory; and (4) stagnation (a reluctance to invest in new relationships and projects). Sociologically, it can be shown that North American mourners inhabit a society that is dominated by three major distortions (from a Christian perspective) of death's significance: a widespread 'denial of death' (well described by Philippe Aries); an attempted 'taming of death' (through the 'death-awareness' movement); and a 'triumph of death' (manifested by indulgence in risk-taking behaviours and by the advocacy of such practices as euthanasia and assisted suicide). Anthropologically, following the schema proposed by van Gennep's description of life's significant passages, mourners' transition from 'separation' to 'reincorporation' appears especially difficult in societies like ours that no longer accord special status to mourners nor prescribe methods for their passage through the difficult time of death-induced loss. It is out of this milieu of WB that Byzantine-rite mourners encounter the paradoxical 'lamentation-to-Alleluia' paradigm proposed to them by BF, a meeting that I attempt to characterize in Chapter Five. The Ephesus Seventh-day Church, one of the first Black SDA churches that were formed in the New York City area during the late 1920s and early 1930s, is one church that has been faced with the challenge of maintaining traditional repertoire and musical practices, while including more popular genres and styles that lay outside the SDA guidelines. Located in Central Harlem, Ephesus is surrounded by the cultural and historical influences within the Harlem community. The Ephesus Church, based on extant hymnals and the recollections of church members, continued in the Euro-centric musical traditions of early SDA churches until the 1960s, when it began to explore African-inspired musical practices. Around 1970, close in time to the SDA 1972 Music Guidelines were instituted, a struggle between Euro-centric versus Afro-centric musical cultures became apparent. Following introductory chapters on the history of African-American membership in the SDA Church from the 19th century to the early 20th century and early musical leaders of Ephesus Church, the musical practices of Ephesus from 1970 to 2010 serves as the focus of this study.

Background and aims Two recent genome-wide association studies (GWAS) performed in Japanese populations showed that the DEP domain containing 5 (DEPDC5) and the MHC class I polypeptide-related sequence A (MICA) locus are associated with susceptibility to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in individuals with chronic hepatitis C (HCV) infection. The effect of these variants has not been assessed in Europeans. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of DEPDC rs1012068, and MICA rs2596542 on the HCC risk and liver fibrosis in Europeans. Methods The genetic variants were genotyped in an Italian cohort of HCV positive individuals with (n=149) and without HCC (n=328). The significant associations were validated in an independent European cohort from Leipzig (n=323). Results Neither the DEPDC5 or MICA variants associate with HCC in the Italian cohort. An increased risk of developing severe fibrosis was observed for each DEPDC5 G allele in the Italian cohort (Odds Ratio (OR)=1.46; 95% confidence interval(C:I.) 1.04-2.04; p-value=0.027). No association between MICA rs2596542 and severe fibrosis was observed. Consistently an increased risk of severe fibrosis was observed for each DEPDC5 G allele in the Leipzig cohort (OR=1.57; 95% C:I. 1.14-2.16; p-value=0.006). Conclusions DEPDC5 and MICA are not associated with the risk of HCV-related HCC onset in Europeans. However, a higher risk of developing severe fibrosis is associated with the DEPDC5 rs1012068 variant in Europeans with chronic HCV infection.

The purpose of this paper is to study the musical content of 「Alleluia」 in a choir setting. The first chapter is an introduction showing the scope of research and purposes of the song. Discussing the origins of the Catholic mass ceremony followed by the development and exploration of the song's ceremonial status as well as its meaning. Through representation during different periods and composers: Palesitelina in the Renaissance era, the Baroque period as classical via Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Handel. Also understanding their life, the religious works and creative style, selected from their works and versions of the musical piece. Their version of the song is atonally examined, looking at the melody, rhythm, structure, as well as the analysis of the musical performance and teachings of the song. Finally, the recommendations and teaching to future students, and performers of the song are also researched as a reference.

Abstract It may well have been Walter Howard Frere who first pointed out how useful post-Pentecost alleluias were in determining the derivation of a missal or gradual. At least, I am aware of no earlier reference. In the introduction to Graduate Sarisburiense he wrote: ‘ a synoptic table of Alleluias is by far the best test by which to discriminate between varying uses ’.Frere himself never followed through this recommendation with any systematic published survey of alleluia series. Nor did his colleague John Wickham Legg in the extensive commentary for his edition of the ‘Lytlington Missal ’ of Westminster Abbey. In fact, the alleluia series of that manuscript is one of the most important clues as to its derivation, since it is a highly characteristic one used at F é camp, Jumi è ges, Saint-Evroult, and Mont-Saint-Michel. Since then the existence of the method has become widely known.

The article puts together the personal experience of participation in the Węgajty expeditions with the critical theory of late-modern temporality formulated by Hartmut Rosa, a German sociologist. Drawing not only from contemporary sociology but also from philosophy, especially hermeneutics and phenomenology, Rosa seeks answers to questions concerning the condition of the modern subject and their experience of time; the questions posed also through the Węgajty Theatre’s endeavours. Can a slowdown become an antidote to the madness of civilizational acceleration? Can being in the “here-and-now” with the hosts of the spring “Alleluja” be an example of a resonant experience which – as Rosa argues – is the basis for regaining true autonomy by the modern subject? When resonating with others, we are moved by the Other, which requires us to respond – emotionally and physically – and finding the answer within ourselves allows us to experience ourselves as self-efficient. Is Węgajty’s carolling in the Beskidy wilderness, where time has stopped, the most modern project of regaining subjective autonomy in the face of the accelerating world and the progressive sense of insufficent time?

Alleluia and offertory prosulas are the most numerous (about a hundred, 80% of which are alleluias) in all European manuscripts. They exploit the freely flowing, but at times carefully balanced, contours of the parent chants, so that the structure of the new text often reflects the phrasal structure of melodies. These prosulas also employ textual assonances for which the position of vowels in the prosula often coincides to that of the parent chant. In local sources some of these prosulas display the use of the Latin cursus, which opens a new perspective on the understanding of melodic cadences in chant composition in southern Italy.
