A new Proportional-Integral (PI) tuning method based on Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) is presented. In particular, an LMI-based optimal control problem is solved to obtain a sparse feedback that provides the PI tuning. The ASCE Test Canal 1 is used as a case study. Using a linearised model of the canal, different tunings for the design of the PI controller are developed and tested using the software Sobek. Furthermore, the proposed method is also compared with other tunings proposed for the same canal available in the literature. Our results show that the proposed method reduces by half the maximum errors with respect to other assessed alternatives and minimizes undesired mutual interactions between canal pools. Also, our method improves the optimality degree of the PI tuning by 30%. Therefore, it is concluded that the LMI based PI controllers lead to satisfactory performance in regulating water levels and canal flows/structure outflows, outperforming other tested alternatives, thus becoming a useful tool for irrigation canal control.

In accordance with the feature of pure delay in monitor AGC system for hot rolling mill, a new self-tuning PI Smith prediction controller based on chaotic particle swarm optimization (CPSO) is developed. The algorithmic principle and design method of new controller are given. Based on the typical monitor AGC model of tandem hot mill, the analysis of dynamic performance for traditional PI Smith prediction controller and CPSO self-tuning PI Smith prediction controller is done by MATLAB. The simulation results indicate that CPSO self-tuning PI Smith prediction controller has faster response and higher static accuracy than traditional PI Smith prediction controller.

Dispersion-tunable photonic topological waveguides have recently attracted much attention, due to their promising applications on topological devices with tunable operational frequencies. Since dispersions of topological waveguides traverse the whole bandgaps of bulk structures, tuning the dispersions (especially the bandwidths) requires changing the whole bulk of corresponding photonic topological insulators. A previously reported material-modification approach provided a parallel tuning on such numerous lattices; however, the increased material loss deteriorated transmissions of the topological waveguide. Here, a parallel tuning approach on structures is theoretically proposed and demonstrated, which spawns dispersion-tunable photonic topological waveguides without increasing material loss. Based on the bilayer honeycomb model, a topological valley waveguide by utilizing bilayer designer plasmonic structures is constructed, accomplished with dispersion tunings by altering interlayer distance. Experimental results validate the theoretical model and display a 61%-relative-tuning range of frequency, with a tunable relative bandwidth up to 16%. This approach may promise applications in tunable topological lasers, robust delay lines, and intelligent photonic devices.

Fully reconfigurable add-drop filters (ADFs) have important applications in optical communication and information processing. Here, we demonstrate a broadly tunable add-drop filter based on a double-disk cavity optomechanical system, side-coupled with a pair of tapered fiber waveguides. We investigate the dependence of the through (drop) efficiency on coupling rates between the cavity and two waveguides by varying cavity-waveguide distances. By optimizing the cavity-waveguide coupling rates, a drop efficiency of 89% and a transmission of 1.9% have been achieved. Furthermore, tuning of the ADF is realized by changing the air gap of the double disk using a fiber tip, which is controlled by a piezoelectric nanostage. Benefiting from the large optomechanical coupling coefficient and the mechanical compliance of the double-disk microcavity, a tuning range of 8 nm has been realized using a voltage of 7 V on the piezoelectric nanostage, which is more than one free spectral range of the cavity. As a result, both the through and drop signals can be resonant with any wavelength within the transparent window of the cavity material, which indicates that the ADF is fully reconfigurable.

In the designing and operation of interconnected power systems, automatic-generation-control (AGC) represent an important topic. AGC is responsible for maintaining the balance between generation side and load side via controlling the frequency and active power interchange. A new metaheuristic strategy is proposed in this work for optimal controller tuning in AGC system. Ԝһale Орtimіzatіоn Αlgorithm(WOA) is proposed for optimal tuning of reset integral controller. T he proposed strategy is used for optimal AGC in two-areas interconnected-power system. The proposed tuning strategy is compared with other new metaheuristic optimization strategy termed as Harmony Search (HS). The two-area interconnected power system are simulated based MATLAB-toolbox. From results obtained, it is obvious that, the system transient and steady-state behavior are enhanced greatly under the same conditions. This is due to the use of the proposed optimization technique. The proposed technique has an advanced and superior feature like, local optimum avoiding, fast convergence ability, and lower search agents and iteration are required. All mentioned features, make this strategy optimal for various optimization problems.

Since superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) unit with a self-commutated converter is capable of controlling both the active and reactive powers simultaneously and quickly, increasing attention has been focused recently on power system stabilization by SMES control. This study presents the effects of novel control strategies of self-tuned fuzzy proportional integral (FPI) controller and fuzzy frequency (FF) controller associated with the automatic generation control (AGC) including SMES unit. The effects of the self-tuning configuration with FPI controller in AGC is also compared with that of FF controlled AGC on SMES control. The simulation results show that both self tuning control schemes of AGC are very effective in damping out of the oscillations caused by load disturbances and it is also seen that the FF controlled AGC with SMES perform better primary frequency control compared to FPI controlled AGC with SMES. An Interactive Artificial Bee Colony (IABC) Optimization based fuzzy (IABCF) to tune optimal gains of a Robust Proportional Integral Derivative (RPID) controller is proposed for the solution of multiarea automatic generation control (AGC) simulation problem in a restructured power system. One of the important problems in the proposed method is the exact tuning of the RPID parameters for achieving the desired level of robust performance. The problem of robustly tuning of RPID based AGC design is formulated as an optimization problem according to the time domain-based objective function, which is solved by the IABC technique that has a strong ability to find the most optimistic results. The robustness and effectiveness of the proffered method are shown on a two and four areas deregulated power system with possible contracted scenarios under large load demand and area disturbances in comparison with the other methods through FD and ITAE performance indices. The evaluation results show that the proposed control strategy achieves good robust performance for worldwide experience of automatic generation control in restructured systems parameters and load changes in the presence of system nonlinearities.

The Accelerator Test Facility (ATF2) at KEK, Japan, aims to experimentally verify the local chromaticity correction scheme designed to achieve a vertical beam size of 37 nm. The facility is a scaled down version of the final focus design proposed for the future linear colliders. In order to achieve this goal, high precision tuning methods and orbit correction techniques are being developed. Experimental studies were planned and undertaken in order to discover and compensate for sources of emittance growth in the extraction region of ATF2. Global Single Value Decomposition (SVD)-based orbit correction algorithms have been developed and optimised for the ATF2 extraction line and final focus. A novel method known as the 'rotation matrix' method has been developed for the spot-size tuning of ATF2 in order to achieve a nanometre-scale beamsize. The tuning algorithms used at ATF2 will provide an important input for future linear colliders (including the International Linear Collider (ILC) and Compact Linear Collider (CLIC)).

The aim of this thesis was to investigate some important key factors able to promote the prospected growth of the aquaculture sector. The limited availability of fishmeal and fish oil led the attention of the aquafeed industry to reduce the dependency on marine raw materials in favor of vegetable ingredients. In Chapter 2, we reported the effects of fishmeal replacement by a mixture of plant proteins in turbot (Psetta maxima L.) juveniles. At the end of the trial, it was found that over the 15% plant protein inclusion can cause stress and exert negative effects on growth performance and welfare. Climate change aroused the attention of the aquafeed industry toward the production of specific diets capable to counteract high temperatures. In Chapter 3, we investigated the most suitable dietary lipid level for gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.) reared at Mediterranean summer temperature. In this trial, it was highlighted that 18% dietary lipid allows a protein sparing effect, thus making the farming of this species economically and environmentally more sustainable. The introduction of new farmed fish species makes necessary the development of new species-specific diets. In Chapter 4, we assessed growth response and feed utilization of common sole (Solea solea L.) juveniles fed graded dietary lipid levels. At the end of the trial, it was found that increasing dietary lipids over 8% led to a substantial decline in growth performance and feed utilization indices. In Chapter 5, we investigated the suitability of mussel meal as alternative ingredient in diets for common sole juveniles. Mussel meal proved to be a very effective alternative ingredient for enhancing growth performance, feed palatability and feed utilization in sole irrespectively to the tested inclusion levels. This thesis highlighted the importance of formulating more specific diets in order to support the aquaculture growth in a sustainable way.

Silicon photonics has gained interest for its potential to provide higher efficiency, bandwidth and reduced power consumption compared to electrical interconnects in datacenters and high performance computing environments. However, it is well known that silicon photonic devices suffer from temperature fluctuations due to silicon's high thermo-optic coefficient and therefore, temperature control in many applications is required. Here we present an athermal optical add-drop multiplexer fabricated from ring resonators. We used a sol-gel inorganic-organic hybrid material as an alternative to previously used materials such as polymers and titanium dioxide. In this work we studied the thermal curing parameters of the sol-gel and their effect on thermal wavelength shift of the rings. With this method, we were able to demonstrate a thermal shift down to -6.8 pm/% for transverse electric (TE) polarization in ring resonators with waveguide widths of 325 nm when the sol-gel was cured at 130 % for 10.5 hours. We also achieved thermal shifts below 1 pm/% for transverse magnetic (TM) polarization in the C band under different curing conditions. Curing time compared to curing temperature shows to be the most important factor to control sol-gel's thermo-optic value in order to obtain an athermal device in a wide temperature range. Interest in the implementation of AGV-systems (Automated Guided Vehicle) has in recent decades increased. The reason is that it allows companies to perform reliably and secure internal transport while reducing the need of personnel. It is one of todays most advanced and complex material handling system that can independently make their own decisions regarding flow paths and traffic control. An AGV-system consists of transport units carrying cargo from point A to point B, and communicates using a computer. The purpose of this study is to develop a model on how to proceed in order to design an AGV system in heavy industry. The model is tested by a case study of a company in the metal industry to determine if the model works and gives the correct result. Relevant literature has been collected through scientific articles, books. In order to find relevant information, a flow mapping on Billet preparation of Sandvik AB was performed. The information was summarized in a situation analysis. In order to design the AGV system, we found that analytical approach and simulation was according to the literature's most successful approaches. By using these methods in the theoretical model and adjust their performance against one another the results from the model should be a sufficiently accurate reflection of the design needed to serve the Billet preparation.

In this thesis, the propagation of transient waves in heterogeneous media and the tuning of periodic elastic materials are studied. The behaviour of time harmonic waves in complex media is a well understood phenomenon. The primary aim of this text is to gain a deeper understanding into the propagation of transient waves in periodic media. The secondary aim is to explore the time harmonic behaviour of two dimensional pre-stressed elastic media and investigate the plausibility of band gap tuning. We begin this text by investigating the reflection of pulses from a semi-infinite set of point masses (we call 'beads') on a string. The reflected pulse is formulated using Fourier transforms which involve the harmonic reflection coefficient. We find that the reflected amplitude of a harmonic wave depends on its frequency. We then ask whether it is possible to find an effective reflection coefficient by assuming the beaded portion of the string is given by some effective homogeneous medium. An effective reflection coefficient is found by assuming the homogeneous medium has the wavenumber given by the infinite beaded string. This effective reflection coefficient is compared to the exact reflection coefficient found using the Wiener-Hopf technique. The results from studying the reflection problem gave inspiration to chapter 4, which focuses on the time dependent forcing of an infinite beaded string that is initially at rest. We again use the Fourier transform to find a time dependent solution. The z-transform is then used, after sampling the solution at the bead positions. We impose a sinusoidal loading which is switched on at a specified time. In doing this we are able to explore how the system behaves differently when excited in a stop band, a pass band and at a frequency on the edge between the two. An exact solution for the infinite beaded string is found at any point in time by expanding the branch points of the solution as a series of poles. We compare this exact solution to the long time asymptotics. The energy input into the system is studied with the results from the exact solution and long time approximation showing agreement. Interesting behaviour is discovered on the two edges between stop and pass bands. In chapter 5 the effect of a nonlinear elastic pre-stress on the wave band structure of a two dimensional phononic crystal is investigated. In this chapter we restrict ourselves to incompressible materials with the strain energy functions used being the neo-Hookean, Mooney-Rivlin and Fung. The method of small-on-large is used to derive the equation for incremental elastic waves and then the plane wave expansion method is used to find the band structure. Finally, chapter 6 focuses on the same geometry with a compressible elastic material. The strain energy function used is the one suggested by Levinson and Burgess. We use the theory of small-on-large to derive the incremental equations for coupled small amplitude pressure and shear waves in this material. In both compressible and incompressible materials we show how it is possible to control the stop bands in a material by applying a large elastic pre-stress.

Inspired by Darwin's natural selection, genetic programming is an evolutionary computation technique which searches for computer programs best solving an optimization problem. The ability of GP to perform structural optimization at the same time of parameter optimization makes it uniquely suitable to solve more complex optimization problems, in which the structure of the solution is not known a priori. But, as GP is applied to increasingly difficult problems, the efficiency of the algorithm has been severely limited by bloating. Previous studies of bloating suggest that bloating can be resolved either directly by delaying the growth in depth and size, or indirectly by making GP to find optimal solutions faster. This thesis explores both options in order to improve the scalability and the capacity of GP algorithm. It tackles the former by firstly systematically analyzing the effect of bloating using a mathematical tool developed called activation rate. It then proposes depth difference hypothesis as a new cause of bloating and investigates depth constraint crossover as a new bloating control method, which is able to give very competitive control over bloating without affecting the exploration of fitter individuals. This thesis explores the second option by developing norm-referenced fitness function, which dynamically determines the individual's fitness based on not only how well it performs, but also the population's average performance as well. It is shown both theoretically and empirically that, norm-referenced fitness is able to significantly improve GP performance over the standard GP setup.

Abstract Today’s advanced Gas Turbine (GT) combustion systems are designed to achieve low emission limits over a wide operational range. Regular combustion tuning is usually required to ensure that emissions are kept well within the plant compliance limits and that combustion dynamics levels are low enough to meet the mechanical integrity targets of all hot gas parts. These targets must be met during the full lifetime of the power plant, regardless of ambient conditions, fuel composition or engine degradation. Considering also the recent increase of combustor inspection intervals and the change in the GT loading profile due to the intermittent nature of renewable energies, it became advantageous to develop an automated GT26 combustion tuning control. Ansaldo Energia self-learning AutoTune system, based on the well proven product developed by Power Systems Manufacturing (PSM), tunes engine operating parameters to maintain emission and combustion dynamics within specified limits under varying ambient conditions, load ranges, gas compositions and increasing engine degradation. It increases the robustness of the operation concept by introducing dynamic set points instead of fixed settings. This results in tuning flexibility, continuous engine optimization and it helps to potentially eliminate manual engine adjustments during a major inspection cycle. After a general introduction on the operating concept of the GT26, the interaction between AutoTune and the GT controller is described together with the set-up and tuning principles. The universal AutoTune algorithm was adapted to the unique GT26 reheat architecture and flexibility, allowing for: (i) GT26 EV and SEV tuning for emissions and pulsations during stable conditions, (ii) tuning to minimize the minimum environmental load (MEL) with changing fuel gas properties or ambient temperature with the Low Part Load (LPL) concept, (iii) handling of very reactive fuels with high C2+ concentrations, (iv) tuning during transient conditions accounting for the variation of the GT thermal state. Based on robust experience after five successful GT26 installations, tuning attempts and successful tunings are statistically analyzed on a commercial plant over a period of several weeks to demonstrate the enlarged operational flexibility and performance of the GT26 equipped with AutoTune. The data analysis focuses on the Low Part Load operation, where Autotune achieved a robust decrease of MEL of 20MW, corresponding to a reduction of 4% in terms of combined cycle relative load.

Sound sources are designed to provide subsea tracking and re‐location of RAFOS floats and other Lagrangian drifters listening at 260Hz. More recently sweeps have been added to support FishChip tracking at 262Hz. These sources must be tuned to the water properties where they are to be deployed as they have a fairly narrow bandwidth. The high‐Q resonator’s bandwidth is about 4Hz. This report documents the tuning, and provides an overview of the sound source assembly.

Environmental conditions are considered an important factor influencing asphalt pavement performance. The addition of modifiers, both to the asphalt binder and the asphalt mixture, has attracted considerable attention in potentially alleviating environmentally induced pavement performance issues. Although many solutions have been developed, and some deployed, many asphalt pavements continue to prematurely fail due to environmental loading. The research reported herein investigates the synthetization and characterization of biobased Phase Change Materials (PCMs) and inclusion of Microencapsulated PCM (μPCM) in asphalt binders and mixtures to help reduce environmental damage to asphalt pavements. In general, PCM substances are formulated to absorb and release thermal energy as the material liquify and solidify, depending on pavement temperature. As a result, PCMs can provide asphalt pavements with thermal energy storage capacities to reduce the impacts of drastic ambient temperature scenarios and minimize the appearance of critical temperatures within the pavement structure. By modifying asphalt pavement materials with PCMs, it may be possible to "tune" the pavement to the environment.
