Malayalam cinema offers a unique body of work for scholars seeking to understand the heterogenous traditions of Indian engagement with Shakespeare. In this article, after a brief overview of the history of Malayalam reception of Shakespeare generally, I focus on the film adaptations of director Jayaraj (Kaliyāttam / Othello [1997]; Kannaki / Antony and Cleopatra [2002]; and Veeram / Hamlet [2017]). Of particular relevance is Jayaraj’s interest in Shakespeare’s female characters, whom he reshapes by immersing his adaptation in the local practices and idioms of Kerala culture, thus transforming the Shakespearean play-text thoroughly. The article examines the influence especially of kathāprasangam upon Jayaraj to understand what aspects of Shakespeare endure in Jayaraj’s films and what are transformed. By approaching the question of adaptation from the perspective of the emic and the etic, an apparatus made influential by linguist-anthropologist Kenneth Pike in his analysis of a cultural text, I examine why, in Malayalam, cinematic Shakespeares have seen greater commercial and critical success than Shakespeare in translation or literary adaptation. The article seeks to understand this disparity by closely reading some of the recurrent patterns that emerge in Shakespeare transculturated in the two domains of Malayalam literature (including translation) and film.

The Roy adaptation model concepts of stimuli, coping mechanisms, and modes of adaptation have been translated into several middle‐range concepts and measured using existing and new instruments. The concept of adaptation level, however, has rarely been used in Roy adaptation model‐based research. This paper presents a description of how the Roy adaptation model concept of adaptation level was translated into the logically congruent middle‐range theory concept of adjustment. A single‐item instrument, the Adjustment Scale, is identified as one way to measure adjustment.

Abstract In the context of the ever growing use of technology through e-learning and open-courseware, our paper describes a project that is being carried out by a consortium of twelve university partners and is coordinated by the University of Maastricht and RAND Europe (Cambridge). This project sets out to examine the evolution and sustainability of the innovative modes of higher education provision in teaching and learning across Europe, the motivations for their emergence as well as the ways in which higher education management and governance have responded and adapted to such new modes of provision. In the highly competitive sector of higher education (HE), while attempting to enhance the quality of teaching and learning, the increasing range of teaching and learning providers (encouraging both new delivery models and the ‘unbundling of delivery’ through partnerships, spin-out organisations, franchising, etc.), has challenged the ‘traditional’ model of university and stimulated changes in the provision and management of higher education. Our paper describes the general framework of the project, foregrounding the first preliminary results of the first European-wide analysis of such innovative modes of provision in teaching and learning in Europe.

Climate change adaptation is a complex field of public policy that requires action by multiple levels of government, the private sector, and civil society. In recent years, increasing scholarly attention has been focused on the governance of adaptation, which has included exploring alternatives to state-centric models of decision-making and identifying appropriate roles and responsibilities of multiple actors to achieve desired outcomes. Scholars have called for greater clarity in distinguishing between different approaches to adaptation governance. Drawing on the rich scholarship about public governance, this article articulates and applies a typology of four modes of governance by which adaptation takes place (hierarchy, market, network, and community). Using examples of initiatives from across Canada, the article offers a framework for describing, comparing, and evaluating the governance of adaptation initiatives.

AbstractResponding to several recent interventions in adaptation studies that have argued for history-as-adaptation, this article develops a sustained examination of how page-to-screen adaptations may be understood as structured and interpreted in ways analogous to the historical film. Considering the relationship between historical screen texts and the historical novel, including the many novel-to-film adaptations of such stories, the article identifies a distinct subset of adaptations in which artworks and literary works are engaged as the ‘source’ for fictional and semi-fictional narratives that ostensibly address the circumstances of their creation. Re-purposing the term ‘origin story’ to characterize these stories, the works of historical novelist Tracy Chevalier are posited as examples of this creative adaptive practice. In addition, this article argues for the trope of ‘bringing-to-life’ and the associated domain of re-enactment as key modes, deeply resonant since the earliest phases of cinema technology, for figuring both the page-to-screen adaptation and historical film. Finally, the 2015 historical biopic and adaptation Trumbo and its relationship to a range of sources are examined in the light of ideas proposed in this article.

Abstract Adaptation, as both a method and a textual category, has been a perennial favorite with text mediators who call themselves translators, appearing especially prominently in intersemiotic rather than interlingual translation. The present paper examines the concepts and practices of adaptation, drawing particular attention to examples from both the West and the Far East. Just as a preference for adaptive methods in translation can be seen in certain periods of Western literary history (e.g. seventeenth- and eighteenth-century France), there were times when adaptations were hailed in China, Japan and Korea. In the course of the discussion, reference will be made to (1) the modernist adaptations undertaken by Western writers through much of the twentieth century; (2) the sequences of novelistic adaptations spawned in Korea and Japan by Chinese classical novels; and (3) the adaptations of European novels by the prodigious twentieth-century Chinese translator Lin Shu. It will be shown that there is a need for translation scholars to question the theoretical validity of the dichotomy between the two modes of “translation” and “adaptation,” as well as an urgency to reconsider the supposed “inferior” status of adaptations.

Abstract This essay focuses on the ‘desire trilogy’ by Italian director Luca Guadagnino to reveal how it embodies nostalgic longing in its discursive structure. The essay examines how the films address matters of nostalgia and adaptation, how they trace an ‘absent presence’ and refer to one another, how they configure the hypertextual, intertextual, and architextual dialogue with other texts and media and use multimodal strategies that engage in ‘nostalgic desire’ for the cultural past. The analysis pays special attention to the mediation modes of intertextual references, reconfiguring the concepts of Gérard Genette within the framework of Lars Elleström’s concept of intermediality as intermodality, based on the semiotics of Charles Sanders Peirce. The study proposes an intermodal approach to the issue of intertextuality and intermediality, exposing the ways in which the engagement of modal strategies in a transtextual dialogue is (or can be) related to the construction of (archi)textual ‘self’.

Modern cars have a multitude of driver assistance functions that aim to support the driver in his/her everyday driving. One part of this is the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) that aims to keep a driver-specified speed. However, this set speed might be perceived as too high for some curves and as a result the driver will interrupt the system and take control again. To avoid this, a Curve Speed Adaptation (CSA) system aims to adapt the speed for an upcoming curve. Such a system should aim to mimic a driver and take into consideration how the driver would behave if he/she were to drive. This work aims to find a set of so-called Driving Modes that can describe how drivers with different driving styles drive through curves with different road properties by analysing recorded manual driving. A nested clustering approach is tested to divide curves into groups based on the driving style they were driven at and their road properties. The results show that this approach is able to capture different driving behaviours through curves. The road type and speed limit of a curve seem thereby to have the main influence on the driving behaviour. Clustering curves first by their driving style followed by the road properties yields thereby the more distinguishable Driving Modes. However, further improvements of the clustering methods are necessary to improve the obtained Driving Modes. The results of this thesis can form the basis for the development of a Curve Speed Adaptation system that adjusts for both the individual driver as well as particular road properties to improve the driver's comfort.
Moderna bilar har en mängd förarstödsystemer som syftar till att stödja föraren i sin dagligakörning. En av dem är Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) som syftar till att hålla en hastighetspecificerad av föraren. Dethär examensarbetet syftar till att hitta så kallade körlägen som kan beskriva hur förare medolika körstilar kör genom kurvor med olika omständigheter genom att analysera manuellakörningar. En nestad klustringsmetod testas för att dela upp kurvor i grupper baserat påkörstilen som de kördes på och deras vägegenskaper. Resultaten visar att denna metod kanfånga olika körningsbeteenden genom kurvor. Vägtypen och hastighetsbegränsningen fören kurva verkar därmed ha huvudinverkan på körbeteendet. Att dela kurvorna först efterderas körstil följt av vägegenskaper ger bättre körlägena. Men ytterligare förbättringar avklustringsmetoderna är nödvändig för att förbättra de erhållna körningsmetoderna. Resul-taten av detta examensarbetet kan utgöra grunden för utvecklingen av ett kurvhastighetsanpassningssystem som anpassar både för den enskilda föraren och speciella vägegenskaperför att förbättra förarens komfort.

Notre demarche consiste a considerer l'etude de l'ensemble des pratiques d'elevage de jeunes agnelles en situation reelle d'elevage comme instrument de comprehension du comportement et des performances zootechniques de ces animaux. Dans cette optique, nous determinons deux hypotheses de base: (1) les situations d'elevage, imposees aux jeunes animaux, influent sur leur comportement a court et moyen termes, notamment en ce qui concerne leur facilite a integrer le troupeau et leur capacite a utiliser les milieux exploites ; (2) les variations comportementales identifiees sont associees a differentes performances zootechniques. Pour repondre a ces hypotheses, nous menons simultanement deux types d'etudes, l'une constituee d'observations comportementales et l'autre de suivis de performances zootechniques. Pour cela, cinq groupes d'agnelles de renouvellement representant differents modes d'elevage de premiere annee au paturage, repandus dans la region des alpes de haute-provence, sont retenus: les trois premiers groupes, conduits en parcs, se differencient par le type predominant de zones paturees et par la composition du troupeau alors que les deux autres, conduits par un berger, se differencient par la date de naissance des agnelles et par leur age a la premiere mise a l'herbe. Nous observons ainsi que les pratiques d'elevage, determinant les environnements physique et social des ruminants, conditionnent la construction des aptitudes comportementales des agnelles des le plus jeune age. Les conditions de vie precoces affectant vraisemblablement l'acquisition d'habiletes non seulement alimentaires, mais aussi spatiales et sociales, les animaux peuvent toutefois readapter leurs habitudes comportementales acquises aux changements subsequents de leurs conditions d'elevage. Lorsque des antenaises elevees precocement sur prairie sont mises sur parcours en deuxieme annee, elles modifient petit a petit leurs habitudes alimentaires, sociales et spatiales. Le desequilibre entre leurs fonctions physiologiques (survie, reproduction et croissance), qui semble resulter de leur effort pour survivre, motive cependant un retard de leur developpement qui tend a reduire l'ecart entre leurs performances et celles des antenaises elevees sur parcours en premiere annee. Nous discutons de l'utilisation possible des pratiques d'elevage comme instruments de pilotage de l'acquisition par les animaux de qualites qui vont permettre tout au long de leur vie de mieux surmonter les variations aleatoires de leur milieu. Par ailleurs, la prise en compte simultanee de facteurs eco-ethologiques et technico-economiques est proposee comme mode d'evaluation du developpement des animaux. Enfin, le choix des pratiques d'elevage dans un contexte de production extensive est presente comme un compromis en vue d'une rationalisation de la conduite des animaux, permettant un bon fonctionnement des exploitations et une adaptation adequate des animaux au paturage a long terme

This work set out to investigate the adaptation, operating modes and integration of the reverse blocking GTO within multi-MW brushless dc machines with the specific intention to maximise torque density and power density of variable speed drives without taking undue risks. A major aspect of this work was to develop an understanding of the roles played by power electronics and machine topology in a novel commutation process that allowed the elapsed time of commutation events to be minimised whilst the timing of commutation events, relative to rotor position, was freely adjustable. This elapsed time had a direct bearing upon the highest order of current harmonics that could be exploited whilst the adjustable timing of commutation events allowed load angle to be optimised. In order to maximise power density it was necessary to fully integrate the static power electronic commutator within the machine. Standard reverse blocking GTO wafers were selected as the preferred switching device because they were expected to provide adequate performance at the low switching frequencies that would be used in such machines, and they presented a relatively low commercial risk. Stacks of unhoused pressure contact GTO devices and heatsinks were immersed in the same force-circulated liquid dielectric coolant that was used by the machine. As such, it was found possible to house the converter within the confines of a normal size motor terminal box and to allow the use of a common cooling system. The GTOs were operated in unity gain turn off mode and a remotely located gate drive was employed so as to permit unimpeded flow of the liquid dielectric coolant. As such it was necessary to understand the commutation implications of gate drive interconnections. The effects of rotor geometry and dampers upon commutation and harmonic exploitation were taken into account and were demonstrated using a small experimental machine. A series of tests on full scale components led to the manufacture of a multi-MW machine that was used to demonstrate the benefits of physical and functional integration under normal running and fault conditions.

Le mode de collecte web gagne de plus en plus de popularité depuis sa création, ceci notamment en raison des avantages qu’il apporte en termes de coût et de temps. Cependant, les tendances nonprobabilistes des échantillons web font souvent douter de leur capacité à fournir des résultats aussi représentatifs que ceux d’un mode traditionnel typique tel que le téléphone. Le but de ce mémoire est de comparer les modes non-probabiliste web et probabiliste téléphone souvent suggérés par les firmes de sondage au Québec. Nous analysons principalement les éventuelles différences entre les échantillons web et téléphone du point de vue de l’adaptation à la maladie de Lyme. Plus spécifiquement, les trois objectifs de l’étude sont de : (1) comparer la représentativité des deux échantillons avec les données du recensement en termes de caractéristiques sociodémographiques, (2) comparer ces modes d’enquête en ce qui concerne l’estimation des taux d’adoption de comportements préventifs à l’égard de la maladie de Lyme tel que rapportés par les répondants aux deux sondages, et (3) tester l’invariance de la mesure des comportements préventifs des échantillons non probabiliste (panel Web) et probabiliste (téléphone). Les données proviennent d’une étude sur les comportements d’adaptation à la maladie de Lyme. Les échantillons panel Web (n=956) et téléphone (n=1003) sont constitués de résidents québécois de 18 ans et plus habitant les régions de risques faible à significatif. Les résultats montrent premièrement qu’aucun des échantillons n’est représentatif de la population cible au regard des caractéristiques sociodémographiquestelles que rapportées dans le recensement canadien de 2016. Deuxièmement, nos résultats indiquent que le taux de non-réponse aux comportements préventifs d’adaptation à la maladie et autres variables associées est significativement plus élevé dans l’échantillon web. Cependant, la magnitude de cette différence est nulle pour 19 items sur 30, et faible pour les 11 autres. De plus, aucune différence importante n’a été relevée lors de la comparaison des deux échantillons du point de vue de l’estimation de la prévalence desdits comportements et leurs déterminants. Enfin, les analyses d’invariance de l’indice d’adaptation ou de prévention à l’égard de la maladie de Lyme révèle que la structure de l’indice est la même pour les deux échantillons. On en conclut que malgré certaines différences observées entre les modes web et téléphone, les répondants des deux échantillons ont tendance à adopter des comportements similaires d’adaptation à la maladie de Lyme.
The web data collection mode has been increasing in popularity since its creation, primarily due to its cost and time effective benefits. However, its non-probabilistic tendencies often bring doubts concerning the representativity of its results in comparison to a typical mode such as the telephone. This master’s thesis compares the non-probability web and probability telephone modes, often suggested by polling firms in the province of Quebec. It principally analyzes the eventual differences between both samples on their adaptation to the Lyme disease. More specifically, the three main goals of this study are: (1) to compare the representativeness of both samples with the census data in terms of their socio-demographic characteristics, (2) to compare those two survey modes regarding their respondents’ preventive behaviour estimates against the Lyme disease, and (3) to test the measurement invariance of the nonprobability (Web panel) and probability (telephone) samples’ preventive behaviour. The data comes from a study on the adaptation of prevention behaviors against Lyme disease. The web (n=956) and telephone samples (n=1003) are made of individuals, 18 years old and above, from low and significant risk regions. Results firstly reveal that neither survey is representative of the Canadian census of 2016. Secondly, results show that the non-response rate for Lyme disease prevention adaptive behaviors and other associated variables is higher in the web survey. However, the magnitude of this significance is nil for 19 out of 30 the items, and small for the other 11. Moreover, no important dissimilarities were found in comparing both samples’ estimates in terms of the behaviours’ prevalence and their determinants. Finally, the measurement invariance analyses on the index of adaptation to the Lyme disease show a similar structure of the index for both samples. In conclusion, although the web and telephone samples are different in some respects, their respondents tend to have similar behaviors of adaptation to the disease.

La psychobiologie a longtemps soutenu que les modes d'adaptation sociale sont indexes par les processus organiques, en considerant cependant que les jeunes enfants sont suffisamment competents pour ajuster leur style de fonctionnement en fonction de l'ecologie sociale de leur groupe. Cette recherche examine les relations entre le mode d'adaptation sociale, le niveau de cortisol et les activites collaterales de 72 enfants de 36 mois repartis en 12 groupes de 3 garcons et 3 filles. Les prelevements de salive pour l'evaluation du cortisol ont ete collectes immediatement avant et 15 minutes apres la session en groupe de pairs. L'etude par analyse hierarchique de la dynamique groupale a permis l'identification de 5 modes d'adaptation comportementale. Ainsi, les enfants se distinguent en retires evitants, retires assertifs, amicaux, engages selectifs et engages dominants. L'analyse de stabilite des niveaux de cortisol demontre une stabilite intra individuelle differentielle en fonction du mode d'adaptation. Les activites collaterales observees comme index du stress confirment les interpretations concernant le stress social. En outre, cette recherche permet de confirmer que ces activites permettent effectivement de reguler le niveau de stress de l'enfant. L'ensemble des resultats illustre les contraintes differentielles du contexte social immediat, a la fois du fonctionnement physiologique et comportemental du jeune enfant et appuient la vision selon laquelle l'implication sociale active facilite la regulation qui sous-tend les processus physiologiques. L'adaptation psychgophysiologique est alors discutee en terme de systeme dont les composantes biologiques sociales et comportementales de stress s'articulent de facon differentes en fonctions des normes locales de l'adaptation sociale
Since their inception, bio-social models of human development suggested that differences in behavioral adaptation are correlated with underlying physiological processes. Among very young children such differences reflect variation in modes of adjustment to the dynamics of the immediate social setting this study examines relationships between children's adreno-cortical response and behavioral styles during entry into an unfamiliar peer group. Behavioral activities of 72 three year-olds (12 groups of 6 children) were recorded during the initial 15 minutes of group interaction. Cortisol levels were from saliva samples collected immediately before and 15 minutes after the group experience. Multiva : riate hierarchical analysis of observed activity revealed three primary modes of behavioral adjustment engaged, friendly and withdrawn social styles. Repeated measures analysis of cortisol responses revealed no systematic relation between styles of social adaptation and absolute levels of cortisol. However, comparison of pre- and post-test changes in cortisol levels showed significant stability for children classified as engaged and friendly; in contrast withdrawn children were more variable in their physiological reactions. These results illustrate differential constraints of the immediate social context on both physiological and behavioral functioning of young children. Findings support the view that active social involvement facilitates the regulation of underlying physiological processes

Cette thèse utilise des approches de génétique des populations et de statistique pour étudier des événements anciens de démographie humaine, inférer de l’adaptation locale dans diverses populations et étudier le déterminisme du goût. En utilisant une approche bayésienne, j’évalue les preuves génétiques d’une réduction de population entre 190 000 et 130 000 ans avant notre ère. Je trouve que les données sont en faveur d’un modèle sans goulot d’étranglement durant cette période. Dans le second article, je développe une méthode destinée à la détection d’adaptation locale basée sur l’étude des haplotypes privés. Appliquée à des données de génotypage, cette méthode permet de détecter des signaux d’adaptation connus chez l’Homme mais aussi d’étendre nos connaissances en matière d’adaptation. J’étudie ensuite les signaux d’adaptation dans des données de génomes entiers de plusieurs populations et montre que le régime alimentaire et les pathogènes ont une influence majeure sur la variabilité adaptative des populations prises en compte. J’étudie dans un dernier article les perceptions gustatives de populations ayant différents modes de vie. Je présente les résultats phénotypiques de perception des goûts, et les associe à des données de génotypage. Je montre que les gènes impliqués dans la perception des goûts ont évolué avec le mode de vie. En effectuant une étude d’association, je montre aussi que les variations dans la perception des goûts impliquent plus de gènes que les seuls gènes codant pour les récepteurs gustatifs. Mes résultats montrent l’utilité des données génétiques denses pour mieux comprendre l’évolution humaine
This thesis uses population genetics and statistical approaches to investigate early human demography, infer local adaptation in diverse sets of populations, and study the genetic basis for taste perception. Using a Bayesian approach, I evaluate the genetic evidence of a bottleneck between 190,000 and 130,000 years ago and find that the data is in favor of a model without bottleneck at this time point. I further develop a method to detect local adaptation based on frequencies of private haplotypes. Applied to large-scale human genotype data, this method detects known signals of positive selection but also permits to improve knowledge on potential adaptation events in humans. I further investigate patterns of adaptation in whole genome data based on a diverse set of African populations. The results from the regions potentially selected show that diet and pathogens are the common driving forces of adaptation in all studied populations. I last study taste perception in populations differing on lifestyle (hunter-gatherers, farmers and nomad herders). I present taste perception phenotypes for all tastes (sweet, bitter, sour, salty and umami) and relate them to high density genotype data. I show that taste and taste-involved genes have evolved with lifestyle. By performing an association study, I also show that variation in taste perception involves more genes than only the taste receptors genes.I covered several topics of human ancient demography and adaptation and show the utility of using large-scale genetic data to better understand human history

Pourquoi les enseignants des écoles ordinaires accueillent et refusent simultanément les élèves handicapés dans des classes ordinaires? Les données quantitatives (questionnaires) et qualitatives (interviews) nous informent des raisons qui fonctionnent derrière des réponses négatives ou positives des enseignants pour accueil des élèves. Les questionnaires ont été distribués à 723 enseignants des écoles publiques et privées dans les régions urbaines et rurales. Au final, seuls 506 questionnaires ont été collectés. Un total de 37 enseignants, qui n'ont pas rempli le questionnaire, ont été sélectionné pour l’entretien. Les analyses montrent que les enseignants répondent “big no, little yes” et “little no, big yes” en oscillant selon le continuum de la ségrégation à l’inclusion. Ceux qui ont répondu “big no, little yes” favorisent la ségrégation et également ont réduit les identités des élèves handicapés observés sans considérer leurs potentiels, en fait, ils ont des perceptions négatives des élèves handicapés. Ceux qui ont répondu “little no, big yes”, favorisent l’inclusion et notamment comprennent mieux les potentiels de ces élèves. Nous avons analysé toutes les données et interprété les réponses des enseignants concernant les barrières qui produisent l’exclusion, les soutiens et les changements requis, et les besoins d’orientation de la formation pour l’exploration des possibilités optimales d’inclusion. L’analyse quantitative indique que la différence significative existe entre les réponses d’enseignants en fonction des types d’écoles, de leur formation et de leur qualification professionnelle, tandis qu’elle n’existe pas entre les enseignants en milieu rural et urbain en fonction de leur sexe ou de leur situation familiale. Toute l’analyse confirme que les enseignants ont besoin d’orientation pour réduire leurs inquiétudes et aussi pour accepter les diversités et donner de la valeur aux potentiels de ces élèves dans les écoles ordinaires au Pakistan
This thesis seeks to explain why teachers accept and do not accept simultaneously students with impairment in ordinary classes. Both quantitative (questionnaire) and qualitative (interviews) data enable us to identify the reasons that operate behind teachers’ negative and positive response towards including these students. The questionnaires were distributed to 723 teachers posted in urban, rural, public and private ordinary schools. Finally, a total of 506 questionnaires could be collected back. A total of 37 teachers who didn’t fill out the questionnaire were also selected for interviews. The analyses reveal that teachers respond in “big no, little yes” and “little no, big yes” manner. It means that their responses oscillate on the continuum ranging from segregation to inclusion. Those with “big no, little yes” basically have negative perception of the students with reduction of their overall identity to the observed disability without taking account of their potential. We analyzed both forms of data and interpreted teachers’ responses on acceptance, exclusionary barriers, and support, changes and orientation needs to explore the optimum possibilities for inclusive classes. Quantitative analysis shows that significant difference exists on acceptance among teachers due to schools’ type and their academic and professional qualification while no significant difference exists due to schools’ locality, their marital status and their gender. Both analyses confirm that teachers direly needed orientation to curtail their qualms and to accept and value the potentials of these students in ordinary schools in Pakistan

Cette thèse porte sur l’ultimatum qu’impose le phénomène de changement climatique à la société occidentale contemporaine : changer de modèle de société ou risquer l’effondrement (Diamonds,2006). L’épreuve majeure qui s’impose serait celle d’habiter autrement la Terre, autour d’un autre projet : celui de la lutte contre le changement climatique. De nombreuses publications (Aykut,2012 ; Dahan, 2015 ; Latour, 2015 ; Roques, 2013 ; Stengers, 2009) décrivent l’incapacité des institutions étatiques à construire un projet commun pour répondre aux enjeux climatiques. Dans cette affaire, les études « critiques » relèvent la place importante qu’a prise la simulation au détriment de l’action concrète et pérenne. Modélisations climatiques, simulations politiques et économiques, diagnostics sociologiques, fictions littéraires, le changement climatique est largement investi par le récit. Nos immersions de terrain ont montré que d’autres échelles de l’action s’emparaient déjà activement de l’affaire climatique. Villes et entreprises sont, en effet, de plus en plus nombreuses à prendre position dans la problématique énergie-climat. Il s’ensuit que certains énoncés, par leur position de médiateurs, avaient cédé la place à des expérimentations concrètes. Adoptant une démarche pragmatique, inspirée de l’Enquête sur les modes d’existence, proposée par Latour, et enrichie par le modèle des Économies de la Grandeur de Boltanski et Thévenot, cette thèse tente de décrire les divers modes d’existence de la problématique climatique auprès de collectifs territoriaux. This thesis focuses on the ultimatum imposed by the climate change phenomenon in contemporary Western society : changing the model of society or risk collapse (Diamonds, 2006). The major ordealt hat is required was that of otherwise inhabit the Earth around another project : the fight against climate change. Many publications (Aykut, 2012 ; Dahan, 2015 ; Latour, 2015 ; Roques, 2013 ;Stengers, 2009) describe the inability of state institutions to build a common project to respond to climate challenges. In this situation, the "critical" studies note the important place that has taken the simulation at the expense of concrete and sustainable action. Climate modelling, political and economic simulations, sociological diagnoses, literary fiction, climate change is largely invested by the narrative. Our field immersions have shown that other scales of action are already actively seized ofthe climate deal. Cities and businesses are in fact more likely to take a position in the energy and climate challenge. It follows that some statements, by their position mediators had given way to concrete experiments. Taking a pragmatic approach, inspired by the l’Enquête sur les modes d’existence proposed by Latour, and enriched by the model of Économies de la Grandeur of Boltanski and Thevenot, this thesis attempts to describe the various modes of existence of the climate problem from territorial collectives. Significance StatementThis chapter puts into conversation two distinct yet interrelated planning visions – Blue Urbanism as a movement in its own right. driven by the overarching promise of more meaningfully reconnecting coastal cities with their marine ecosystems, and Nature-based solutions, with roots in engineering that encompass a broad range of conservationist and infrastructural interventions rooted in Euro-American sensibilities around (urban) nature. Drawing on urban Southeast Asia for inspiration, namely Jakarta, Metro Manila and Singapore, the chapter unpicks dominant understandings of “nature” within its concomitant planning paradigms. Particular attention is placed on divergent meanings and contradictions that underpin how urban coastal nature(s) are materially imagined, reproduced and contested through often technical means, utilitarian value-systems, and modes of governing adaptation in its broadest sense.

The Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations recently approved revisions to their accreditation standards that are intended to support improvements in patient safety and reduce medical errors. Key among these is the requirement to perform a Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) on one high-risk process each year and propose measures to address the most critical failures. Because FMECA was developed for other industries such as nuclear, aerospace, and chemical, some adaptation of its form and use is needed. The FMECA process is normally performed by analyzing each element of an engineered system as represented on a process flow diagram. Medical processes, in contrast, are usually defined procedurally. The key elements of a medical process are more likely to be actions than equipment and components. A community project was put together to develop and test the FMECA adaptation and had good results. This collaboration consisted of safety analysts at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Washington and the Quality and Performance Improvement managers of the three local hospitals. This paper describes this adaptation.

We are living in the age of adaptation. In contemporary art, the power of adaptation is evidenced by the fact that a textual semiotic system is continuously passing through the different genres and means to establish new texts. Adaptation is also an intercultural translation as each work adapted experiences a cultural shift so as to adapt to the target culture. Although The Tale of Kieu (Nguyen Du) made use of the plot of Kim Van Kieu, written as the pseudonym Qingxin Cairen (青心才人, Pure Heart Talented Man), in the Vietnamese artistic context, the tale can be considered as the “original text” that provides superabundant materials for other adaptations. The Tale of Kieu is one of the Nom poetries that has been most adapted to other art forms, particularly “cải lương” (reformed theatre). In this study, we analyze the case of video-cải lương Kim Van Kieu (directed by Nguyen Bach Tuyet), to determine modes of semiotic transposition from the narrative (narrative poem) to the performance/showing (video cải lương). This inter-semiotic translation process requires that the author adapts, selects, renounces, transforms as well as encodes/decodes, as semiotics, genre, and materials belonging to the verbal semiotic system to the nonverbal semiotic system, or vice versa. To concretize this, we analyze factors that were involved or omited during the adaptation of The Tale of Kieu to Kim Van Kieu.

An adaptive control algorithm based on Lyapunov’s direct method has been implemented in a low-order thermoacoustic network model of an axisymmetric annular combustor. The pressure perturbation at a fixed axial location downstream of the flame — provided by multiple pressure measurements around the combustor circumference — acts as the control input. Control is achieved via modulation of the fuel flow rate at multiple fuel valve locations. New expressions for the controller’s adaptation rates are derived by specifying the desired control settling time: these adaptation rates are functions of known parameters only. Time domain simulations show that the controller successfully stabilises both longitudinal and circumferential modes (including the simultaneous control of multiple unstable modes), even from within the limit cycle. The adaptive controller successfully retains control following a large change in the combustor operating conditions.

The article studies the results of the research aimed at the improvement of the methodology of develop- ment of the health-preserving competence of a Physical Education teacher in conditions of post-graduate education on the basis of Nikolai Bernstein’s theory of movement construction using virtual reality technologies. Based on the use of AR/VR technologies a software application “Virtual Model Illustrating Nikolai Bernstein’s Theory of Movement Construction” was developed. The stated model is one of the tools of the “Methodology of development of the health preserving competence of a Physical Educa- tion teacher on the basis of Nikolai Bernstein’s theory of the levels of movement construction”. The experimental study determines that the application of the virtual model within the stated methodology is an effective tool for the development of the health preserving competence of a Physical Education teacher. The application of the virtual model allows the actualization of the health preserving, conceptual, gnoseological, biomechanical, inclusive, corrective potentials of Nikolai Bernstein’s theory of movement construction. The use of the virtual model presents the ways of targeted and meaningful use of Nikolai Bernstein’s theory of the levels of movement construction by a Physical Education teacher and the improvement of physical and recreational technologies and concrete physical exercises and movement modes. Due to the application of virtual reality tools, health-preserving, preventative, corrective and developmental strategies are being formed among which the significant ones are: “Application of syner- gistic movements to adaptation to movement activity, and recreation”, “Application of spatial movements for actualization of the orientation and search activities and development of spatial thinking”, “Use of movements with a complicated algorithm for intellect development”.

Canada 1 Water is a 3-year governmental multi-department-private-sector-academic collaboration to model the groundwater-surface-water of Canada coupled with historic climate and climate scenario input. To address this challenge continental Canada has been allocated to one of 6 large watershed basins of approximately two million km2. The model domains are based on natural watershed boundaries and include approximately 1 million km2 of the United States. In year one (2020-2021) data assembly and validation of some 20 datasets (layers) is the focus of work along with conceptual model development. To support analysis of the entire water balance the modelling framework consists of three distinct components and modelling software. Land Surface modelling with the Community Land Model will support information needed for both the regional climate modelling using the Weather Research & Forecasting model (WRF), and input to HydroGeoSphere for groundwater-surface-water modelling. The inclusion of the transboundary watersheds will provide a first time assessment of water resources in this critical international domain. Modelling is also being integrated with Remote Sensing datasets, notably the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE). GRACE supports regional scale watershed analysis of total water flux. GRACE along with terrestrial time-series data will serve provide validation datasets for model results to ensure that the final project outputs are representative and reliable. The project has an active engagement and collaborative effort underway to try and maximize the long-term benefit of the framework. Much of the supporting model datasets will be published under open access licence to support broad usage and integration.

The new EU strategy on adaptation to climate change highlights the urgency of adaptation measures while bringing forth adaptation as vitally important as a response to climate change as mitigation. In order to provide information on how adaptation to climate change has been promoted in Finland and what calls for attention next, we have compiled a comprehensive information package focusing on the following themes: adaptation policy, impacts of climate change including economic impacts, regional adaptation strategies, climate and flood risks in regions and sea areas, and the availability of scientific data. This report consists of two parts. Part 1 of the report examines the work carried out on adaptation in Finland and internationally since 2005, emphasising the directions and priorities of recent research results. The possibilities of adaptation governance are examined through examples, such as how adaptations steering is organised in of the United Kingdom. We also examine other examples and describe the Canadian Climate Change Adaptation Platform (CCAP) model. We apply current information to describe the economic impacts of climate change and highlight the related needs for further information. With regard to regional climate strategy work, we examine the status of adaptation plans by region and the status of the Sámi in national adaptation work. In part 2 of the report, we have collected information on the temporal and local impacts of climate change and compiled extensive tables on changes in weather, climate and marine factors for each of Finland's current regions, the autonomous Åland Islands and five sea areas, the eastern Gulf of Finland, the western Gulf of Finland, the Archipelago Sea, the Bothnian Sea and the Bay of Bothnia. As regards changes in weather and climate factors, the changes already observed in 1991-2020 are examined compared to 1981-2010 and future changes until 2050 are described. For weather and climate factors, we examine average temperature, precipitation, thermal season duration, highest and lowest temperatures per day, the number of frost days, the depth and prevalence of snow, the intensity of heavy rainfall, relative humidity, wind speed, and the amount of frost per season (winter, spring, summer, autumn). Flood risks, i.e. water system floods, run-off water floods and sea water floods, are discussed from the perspective of catchment areas by region. The impacts of floods on the sea in terms of pollution are also assessed by sea area, especially for coastal areas. With regard to marine change factors, we examine surface temperature, salinity, medium water level, sea flood risk, waves, and sea ice. We also describe combined risks towards sea areas. With this report, we demonstrate what is known about climate change adaptation, what is not, and what calls for particular attention. The results can be utilised to strengthen Finland's climate policy so that the implementation of climate change adaptation is strengthened alongside climate change mitigation efforts. In practice, the report serves the reform of the National Climate Change Adaptation Plan and the development of steering measures for adaptation to climate change both nationally and regionally. Due to its scale, the report also serves e.g. the United Nations’ aim of protecting marine life in the Baltic Sea and the national implementation of the EU strategy for adaptation to climate change. As a whole, the implementation of adaptation policy in Finland must be speeded up swiftly in order to achieve the objectives set and ensure sufficient progress in adaptation in different sectors. The development of binding regulation and the systematic evaluation, monitoring and support of voluntary measures play a key role.
