Abstract Samuel Ajayi Crowther, the Yoruba linguist and Anglican missionary bishop, interacted in the 1870s with communities of multilingual Islamic scholars on the north fringe of Yorubaland. This essay uses contemporary scholarship on the book culture of Ilọrin to shed light on Crowther’s letters, in particular his triumphant account of a formal audience with the emir of Ilọrin in 1872, during which his performance centred on the bilingual collection of Christian books he bore. He emphasized the uniqueness and novelty of his Christian books and their associated practices. Yet his accounts invite us to begin viewing Africa’s Christian and Islamic book histories through the same analytical frame, which reveals how they were constituted in part through their interactions. This allows us to see they had more in common than Crowther assumed and than many scholarly accounts of African book history assume, particularly in the areas of the physicality of books, the modes of performance associated with books, and the interpersonal transactions that books facilitate.

In A Nation and its Books (1998), numerous chapters emphasise the cultural impact of book collecting in Wales; however, apart from one entry, a history of women's book ownership is largely absent. This article seeks to redress this imbalance by providing an account of three women's libraries in Wales from the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The records for these libraries provide statistical evidence about book-buying trends, as well as information about the materiality of the books, and the spaces they were housed in. Importantly, revisiting such collections helps differentiate and document women's cultural legacies through books in Wales.

Both authors are kha/ifahs of Shaykh Muhammad al-Casnazanial-Husseini of the Aliyyah Qadiriyyah Casnazaniyyah Sufi tariqah. Theyhold degrees in physics from Baghdad University and Durham University,and have authored numerous books, especially on Sufism, in Arabic andEnglish.Although readers might expect this book to address literary and culturalissues surrounding the shared but different accounts of Moses and theIsraelites in the Bible and the Qur'an, the authors have chosen to focus ondemonstrating the Qur'an's historical accuracy. Dividing their book intoIO chapters, they argue alternately that the Bible is inconsistent and historicallyinaccurate, while the Qur'an is consistent and confirmed byexternal historical evidence. The Biblical account of Moses and theIsraelites is not directly compared to the Qur'anic account; rather, theBible is used primarily as a foil to emphasize what the authors see as theQur'an's reliability. The perception of a book as an architectonical construction is a well-known fact. We could use the stage as a metaphor for the book, or, in other concepts the book becomes the equivalent of an exhibition space or even replaces it. In all these metaphoric circumlocutions the book not only reproduces content, but itself functions as an exhibition place, a stage, or another conception of space. Curiously enough, the consideration of the material aspects of books are taken into account at a time when digitalisation seems to dissolve the material body of books and, while theory makes it clear that texts and books are not equivalent. Therefore the question of what characterises a book is raised again. This question must take into account the variety of different approaches to books throughout the centuries. The perception of the book and, moreover, its relation with the user or reader becomes visible mainly through material aspects. The awareness of the spatial dimension of a book goes back to at least the Medieval period or even earlier.

The article studies the history of the development of children’s books in Canada. The author emphasises the main political, socio-economic and cultural factors that affect this process and form its unique characteristics. The hypothesis that «Canadian cultural identity» cannot yet be defined since it is continually, significantly affected by domestic issues and foreign cultures is proposed and analysed.The author analyses the historical way of Canadian children’s book development. The different stages of this development are taken into account: from the total domination of foreign children’s books on the Canadian market to the resurrection and reflection of the First Nation people’s history and culture in the new books of Canadian writers. The author suggests that the modern stage of the Canadian Children’s books existence gives these books a power to become an instrument of Canadian cultural identification.Different concepts of formation of the term Canadian children’s books are evaluated and their commonality and differences are underlined. The author defines the criteria that modern researchers, writers, publishers, cultural foundations and non-profit organizations use to describe the uniqueness of Canadian children’s books.The system of government and private financial support for Canadian writers, illustrators and publishers is described. The main strategies for support and promotion of Canadian children’s books inside Canada are analysed.

Although books on the history of Central Asian petroglyphs have been widely published, no scientific research has been carried out in this regard to date. Of course, there are specific reasons for this situation, first of all, the rise of ideas that the people of Central Asia were backward and illiterate in the period before the October coup d'état of 1917, attempts to falsify knowledge about historical periods that educate the population in the spirit of patriotism and freedom, the study of lithographic books about history hindered in a way. Also, the focus on handwritten books in the coverage of historical processes has led to the exclusion of historical lithographic books. However, lithographic books were important not only from a source point of view, but also from a social point of view. It should be noted that the wider spread of manuscript books, as well as the social factor of lithographic books, allowed for the wide distribution of important historical sources among the population. Taking into account the fact that the work “History of Mullozoda” was published several times in lithographs, it is possible to know how widespread it was among the population [1].

On occasion Charles Darwin can seem our scientific contemporary, for the subjects he engaged remain engaging today, but in his role as author he belongs to the past. It is not customary today for scientists to write book after book, as Darwin did, or for these books to serve as the primary vehicle of scientific communication. For Darwin, however, the book was central. He wrote at least eighteen, depending on what one counts; in hisAutobiographyhe entitled the section describing his most important work ‘An account how several books arose’; and in his personal Journal, begun in August 1838 after he had come to a mature sense of himself, he organized entries around his books. A characteristic entry is that for 1846: ‘Oct. 1st. Finished last proof of my Geolog. Observ. on S. America; This volume, including Paper in Geolog. Journal on the Falkland Islands took me 18 & 1/2 months:–’. Further, almost always he had a book under way: when one was complete, the next was begun. He called them the milestones to his life.

This dissertation addresses the development of the costume book in the rapidly globalising world of the sixteenth century, concentrating on two costume albums produced in the second quarter of the sixteenth century and whose owners and creators shared close ties to the imperial court of Habsburg ruler and Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (r. 1519-56). These richly illustrated albums were among the first known and surviving attempts to make sense of cultural difference by compiling visual information about regional clothing customs in and around Europe and further abroad. Their method of codifying sartorial customs through representative costume figures became a prevailing method through which to examine human difference on an increasingly vast and complex geo-political stage. Yet to have been satisfactorily investigated is the significant role that Habsburg networks and relationships played in shaping these costume albums and their ethnographic interests. The Trachtenbuch, or costume album, of Augsburg portrait medallist Christoph Weiditz (c. 1500-59) is a primary example, constituting a work of keen ethnographic observation which depicts customs and cultures largely witnessed first-hand when the artist travelled to Charles V’s Spanish court in 1529. Of equal interest is the second primary example of this dissertation, the costume album of Christoph von Sternsee (d. 1560) the captain of Charles V’s German Guard. Sternsee’s album, introduced to scholarship for the first time in this study, illustrates diverse cultures and costumes encountered across the imperial Habsburg lands and its neighbours. The emperor’s far-reaching sovereignty propelled Christoph Weiditz and Christoph von Sternsee across the Habsburg lands as they each attempted to benefit their careers and gain prestige from imperial patronage. Their costume albums testify to an empire that encouraged interactions between ambassadors, agents, merchants, military officers, and courtly elite of diverse cultural backgrounds, against a backdrop of shared political, religious, commercial, and military interests. This milieu facilitated the transfer of knowledge and developed methods of visual communication and human representation that were shared and reciprocally recognised.

This article is centred on baratto, or market exchange, which consisted in making payments in kind even in the context of a monetised economy. Documentary evidence shows how frequently this type of commercial transaction was adopted in late-medieval long-distance trade, and which strategies led to its adoption. Far from being a feature of a ‘primitive’ economy, baratto in international trade implied a network of information, a knowledge of the demand and an ability to connect marketplaces, that only few possessed. Examples are taken mainly from account-books and correspondence of Italian (Florentine) merchants, who we able both to assess the monetary value of each merchandise and to know the market where it would be more profitable to sell it for cash or, again, through baratto.

AbstractRobert Leslie Ellis was born in Bath on 25 August 1817. His father, Francis Ellis (1772–1842), had held a position in the Admiralty, but resigned when he became the principal heir of his uncle Henry Ellis, formerly Governor of Nova Scotia, who on his death in 1806 left him £10,000 and extensive landholdings in Ireland and elsewhere. Francis and his wife Mary, née Kilbee (1777–1847), had six children, of whom Robert, born in 1817, was the youngest. The family lived in a succession of large houses in Bath, where Francis Ellis, a well-known local figure, was one of the founders of the Bath Literary and Scientific Institution, founded in 1823. The Institution had a well-stocked library which took in both British and continental books and periodicals, and the teenaged Ellis frequented it regularly, reading avidly and conversing with the adult members, who included scholars and scientists of some distinction. His father involved himself in Ellis’s education and was himself a well-educated and inquiring man; his uncle had described him as ‘really a very deserving young man of uncommon abilities and possessed of more scientific and other knowledge than [one] could expect at his years.’ In an account of the Bath literati published in 1854, Francis Ellis was included in a list of ‘men with intelligent and well-informed minds’, and a later supplement stated that ‘Francis Ellis had an enlarged mind, was a good classic, a superior mathematician, and a generally well-informed man’. Ellis’s library contained several hundred books in 1841, when an inventory was taken.

The research aimed at bringing new data to the study of inequality in the distribution of wealth in the long run using the fiscal documentation available to many communities of the Marches region over a period covering the late Middle Ages and the full modern age. The political-administrative history of this territory, progressively incorporated into the Papal State, was reflected in an evolution of the methodologies for assessing wealth for tax purposes. Their characteristics have been carefully taken into account and criticized in order to ensure compatibility in time and space. Land registers, “estimi”, "libre", as well as books of “collette”, will be used to describe the fiscal capacity of taxpayers enrolled in these registers and to estimate the dynamics of economic inequality.

AbstractThis chapter examines Schirmacher’s 160-page history of the suffragette movement (which was to remain the only German book on the subject for several decades), its contexts and receptions in the German-speaking countries and beyond. I begin by exploring Schirmacher’s first references to the British militants and briefly outline the events and political stances on which she reported. I then discuss her decision to write a favourable book on the suffragettes in the context of her personal situation as well as the various controversies she was involved in at the time. Examining Schirmacher’s account of the movement and the arguments she used to explain militant strategies to a German audience, I analyse the ways in which she used and rendered the material available to her and how she transformed their messages according to her agenda. The last two parts of the chapter give insights into the book’s considerable impact in various arenas, its contemporary reception, its translation into Polish, and its re-publications in the 1970s and 1980s.

AbstractThis chapter discusses Kenneth Goldsmith’s Uncreative Writing, a collection of essays that includes an account of his Uncreative Writing course at the University of Pennsylvania. Championing various forms of literary automatism and appropriation, which are often treated as a much-needed response to our contemporary digital environment, the book is offered as a counter-model to established notions of authentic, self-expressive writing. The article takes this position as a springboard into thinking about Goldsmith’s writing exercises in relation to a longer history of indexical artistic practices, most notably analog photography. Despite its own positioning vis-à-vis the digital, I claim, Goldsmith’s writing model can best be understood as an extension of a proto-photographic logic into the ambit of contemporary literature. At the same time, as I show, the use of textual reproduction central to his project has been a longstanding ingredient of self-expressive literary advice. I conclude by arguing that Goldsmith’s model is just as tied to a form of personal expression, albeit one following a less obviously self-expressive logic that resonates with online forms of indexical performativity.

The great merchant-bankers of the Italian peninsula, particularly the Florentines, were renowned for their accounting and technical expertise. The double-entry system they used to keep their accounts is proof of their 'modernity'. It is therefore interesting to look at the practice of doing business by exchanging goods rather than by paying in cash or using bookkeeping entries as a means of balancing the books, a practice that has existed for a very long time in all areas of trade and commerce. Muzica Istoriei is an innovative e-learning project, based on modern educational principles, designed as complementary to traditional methods of teaching, It aims to raise awareness on major historical events and detailes not covered by books or other classical methods of learning and their impact on local and global culture, using interactive multimedia content. This simple but effective website has one key word: concision. It consists of 10 lessons, historical events with high impact on our society and part of the school curricula, each linked with their specific song at the moment. This songs reflect the mood of the historical event presented. The students cover the lessons, which include a conceptual map, an interactive timeline combined with a suggestive pictures for each event and important documents for that occasion. Last but not least, the teacher may asses the pupils using the Google Form at the bottom of the page, which take into account different types of questions, such as multiple choice or missing gap. On the technical side, this project has been programmed using HTML, CSS and JavaScript languages, in order to be as modern and eye appealing as possible. It is optimised for Google Chrome and can be used anywhere, at school or on a PC, given the fact that it requires a low amount of memory and space. To sum up, ,,Muzica Istoriei" represents an easy to use educational tool, which is meant teach and asses in a more pleasant way, more adequate to today's world and style of learning.

The history of Kuwait and the Arab Gulf states in the early period of modern history depends on several official sources, the most prominent of which are: British and Ottoman documents and official correspondence between the rulers of the region and foreign powers. However, these documents express the viewpoint of their writers and the orientations of their countries. A dilemma represented in the absence of mechanisms for preserving documents, and this led to a gap in the documentation of the history of the Gulf, especially the economic, social and cultural history. To fill this gap, the cultural institutions in Kuwait began collecting and organizing Kuwaiti families' documents, most notably: the maritime calendars, which are notebooks and books in which Kuwaiti sailors used to record their notes and observations during the sailing ships’ voyages, and the accounts and correspondence books of commercial families, especially since the commercial families in Kuwait They had established trade centers in India and East Africa, and they corresponded with each other to learn about the movement of buying and selling, and the conditions in the Arab Gulf at all levels, and then this study will address the importance of these documents in documenting the history of Kuwait and the Arabian Gulf in the nineteenth century and the first half of Twentieth century. The study will be divided into three axes: The first axis will deal with the maritime calendars, their types and their usefulness, the most famous sailors’ notebooks, and the information they contain about the history of Kuwait and the Arabian Gulf. Correspondence and notebooks, and the third axis will present the role of Kuwaiti cultural institutions in preserving civil documents, the Kuwaiti Research and Studies Center as exemplar

Should the book and the journal article remain the primary forms of scholarly production in the digital age? That is a question asked by publishing scholar Kathleen Fitzpatrick. She proposes a role for “inbetween” work. Indeed, there is a history of “grey literature” in many fields and of the short book. And academic publishers are experimenting with the form. In this context, an explanation of the rationale for and origins of the Charleston Briefings illustrates the possibilities for experimenting with inbetween publishing featuring subjects of interest to librarians and professionals in allied fields. There follows an account of the genesis, planning, and composition of a forthcoming Briefing on the scholarly workflow. While the length of the Briefings may appear to be its defining element, how it manages its scholarly and educational tasks is the key to meeting its goals and the needs of readers. In this case “inbetweenness” can be an advantage for representing the subject’s timeliness and utility while managing the rapidly growing literature on its different dimensions, including what the digital evolution of the scholarly workflow means for library services.
