Abstract Background Due to severe immunosuppression, patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (aSCT) are at increased risk of infection and especially bloodstream infections (BSI) remain a major cause of death. Knowledge of the specific epidemiology of pathogens and resistances is of utmost importance to optimize antimicrobial treatment strategies. Methods Based on the Cologne Cohort of Neutropenic Patients (CoCoNut) database, we conducted a retrospective analysis of blood cultures collected within 100 days following transplantation of patients undergoing aSCT between January 2009 and December 2018 at the University Hospital of Cologne, Germany. Contamination of coagulase-negative Staphylococci (CoNS) isolates (single positive isolate within 5 days) was considered within the analysis. Results In total, 843 aSCT patients were available for analysis (484/843 [57%] male). The median age was 53 (interquartile range [IQR] 43–62) years, predominant underlying diseases were acute myeloid leukemia (47%, 397/843), lymphoma (14%, 117/843), and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (11%, 89/843). Median inpatient stay was 39 (IQR 34–50) days, while 67/843 (8%) patients died. Antibacterial prophylaxis was administered in 289/843 (34%) and antifungal prophylaxis in 738/843 (88%) patients. BSI was diagnosed in 233/843 (28%) patients. In total, 5,489 pairs of blood cultures were taken (median 4 per patient, IQR 2–8), while a pathogen could only be detected in 922/5,489 (17%). Most frequent pathogens were CoNS (259/922, 28%), Enterococcus spp. (219/922, 24%), E. coli (132/922, 14%), Klebsiella spp. (44/922, 5%), P. aeruginosa (39/922, 4%), S. aureus (37/922, 4%), and Candida spp. (42/922, 5%). Polymicrobial infection was detected in 58/922 (6%) cases. Within Enterococci isolates, 24/219 (11%) were VRE. None of the Klebsiella, but 9/132 (7%) of E. coli isolates were ESBL positive. In 4/37 (11%) cases S. aureus isolates were MRSA. Conclusion Patients in the early phase after aSCT are at high risk of BSI with a predominantly gram-positive spectrum. Empirical antimicrobial treatment must consider pathogen epidemiology and resistance patterns while waiting for blood culture results. Disclosures All authors: No reported disclosures.

Abstract Drought stress has devastating impacts on faba bean production, particularly with the current abrupt climate changes in arid environments. Hence, it is essential to identify drought-tolerant genotypes. The present study aimed at assessing six faba bean genotypes under three irrigation levels during two winter successive growing seasons (2018/2019 and 2019/2020). The applied irrigation levels were well-watered (every 4 days (D1), moderate drought every 8 days (D2), and severe drought 12 days (D3)) regimes. The analysis of variance exhibited highly significant differences among genotypes, irrigation treatments, and their interactions for all studied traits, except the number of pods plant−1 in the first season. Yield traits of all assessed genotypes decreased significantly with increasing drought stress. Otherwise, proline content (Pro) increased significantly with increasing drought stress. The genotypes Giza.843, Nubaria.2, and Nubaria.3 recorded the highest values of plant height, number of branches/plant, pods/plant, pods weight/plant, 100 seed weight, seed yield/plant, and seed yield/kg under drought stress. Similarly, the highest Pro was displayed by Giza.843 and Nubaria.3 under drought stress in both seasons. Furthermore, Giza.843, Nubaria.2, and Nubaria.3 genotypes had the highest values for most tolerant indices. Accordingly, these genotypes could be exploited in developing drought-tolerant and high-yielding faba bean genotypes in arid environments through breeding programs.

Total iodide organification defect (TIOD), where the iodide in the thyroid gland cannot be oxidized and/or bound to the protein, is caused by a defect in the thyroid peroxidase (TPO) gene. Single strand conformation polymorphism analysis was used to screen for mutations in the TPO gene from five unrelated TIOD patients in Taiwan, and five novel mutations were detected. Three of these were frameshift mutations: a single T insertion between nucleotide position 2268 and 2269 (c.2268-2269 insT) in exon 13 and two single C deletions at nucleotide positions 843 (c.843 delC) and 2413 (c.2413 delC) in exon 8 and 14 respectively. The other two were single nucleotide substitutions (c.G1477>A and c.G2386>T) located in exons 9 and 13 respectively. While the former would result in amino acid substitution (Gly493Ser) in the highly conserved region of the TPO polypeptide, the latter would result in either amino acid substitution (Asp796Tyr) or alternative splicing. Of those identified TPO mutations, c.2268-2269 insT was most prevalent and was detected as heterozygous in all but one TIOD patients. All five TIOD patients investigated in this study were compound heterozygous. The method presented in this study could be used for carrier assessment and mutation analysis of newly identified TIOD patients.

ABSTRACTObjective: To determine the adequacy of pharmacotherapy received by patients with newly-diagnosed obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), based on current practice guidelines.Methods: A 9 year (1997–2006) retrospective claims analysis of adults enrolled in Florida Medicaid for at least 3 continuous years was conducted to determine the percentage who received both a minimally effective duration (≥ 8 continuous weeks) and dose of first-line OCD pharmacotherapy during the year following their first (“index”) OCD diagnosis.Results: Among 2,960,421 adult (≥ 18 years of age) enrollees, 2,921 (0.1%) were diagnosed with OCD. Among the 2,825 OCD patients without comorbid Asperger syndrome or autism, 843 had newly-diagnosed OCD and at least 12 months of follow-up data after their index diagnosis. Among these 843 patients, 588 (69.7%) received first-line OCD pharmacotherapy but only 323 (38.3%) received a minimally effective pharmacotherapy trial in the year following their index diagnosis.Conclusions: Among clinically-diagnosed persons with OCD (<10% of those with the disorder), a minority of newly-diagnosed patients receive a minimally effective pharmacotherapy trial consistent with current standards of care. Reasons such as limited patient adherence and/or physician awareness of guidelines must be identified and redressed to ameliorate the patient, healthcare system, and economic burdens associated with OCD.

Strong variable radio emission from the bright transient X-ray source GRO J1655-40 (X-ray Nova Scorpii 1994) has been detected at 843 MHz with the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST). As the hard X-ray intensity from the 1994 August outburst declined the radio output increased rapidly, reaching a peak of nearly 8 Jy some 12 days after the first X-ray peak. VLBI images obtained at this time showed two main components separating with an apparent transverse velocity > c. The evolution of the radio spectrum suggests that the time delay between X-ray and radio emissions is due, at least in part, to opacity effects associated with this expansion.

Abstract. Ion chromatography measurements of 1730 snow and firn samples obtained from three short cores and one pit in the Vostok station area, East Antarctica, allowed for the production of the combined volcanic record of the last 900 years (AD 1093–2010). The resolution of the record is 2–3 samples per accumulation year. In total, 24 volcanic events have been identified, including seven well-known low-latitude eruptions (Pinatubo 1991, Agung 1963, Krakatoa 1883, Tambora 1815, Huanaputina 1600, Kuwae 1452, El Chichon 1259) found in most of the polar ice cores. In comparison with three other East Antarctic volcanic records (South Pole, Plateau Remote and Dome C), the Vostok record contains more events within the last 900 years. The differences between the records may be explained by local glaciological conditions, volcanic detection methodology, and, probably, differences in atmospheric circulation patterns. The strongest volcanic signal (both in sulfate concentration and flux) was attributed to the AD 1452 Kuwae eruption, similar to the Plateau Remote and Talos Dome records. The average snow accumulation rate calculated between volcanic stratigraphic horizons for the period AD 1260–2010 is 20.9 mm H2O. Positive (+13%) anomalies of snow accumulation were found for AD 1661–1815 and AD 1992–2010, and negative (−12%) for AD 1260–1601. We hypothesized that the changes in snow accumulation are associated with regional peculiarities in atmospheric transport.

Telomeres are the chromosome end structures consisting of telomere-associated proteins and short tandem repeat sequences, TTAGGG, in humans and mice. Telomeres prevent chromosome termini from being recognized as broken DNA ends. The structural integrity of DNA including telomeres is constantly threatened by a variety of DNA damaging agents on a daily basis. To counteract the constant threats from DNA damage, organisms have developed a number of DNA repair pathways to ensure that the integrity of genome remains intact. A number of DNA repair proteins localize to telomeres and contribute to telomere maintenance; however, it is still unclear as to what extent. Telomere shortening has been linked to rare human disorders that present with bone marrow failure including Fanconi anemia (FA). FANCC is one of the most commonly mutated FA genes in FA patients and the FANCC subtype tends to have a relatively early onset of bone marrow failure and hematologic malignancies. Here, we studied the role of Fancc in telomere length regulation in mice. We demonstrated that deletion of Fancc did not affect telomerase activity, telomere length or telomeric end-capping in mice with long telomeres. We also showed that Fancc deficiency accelerates telomere shortening during high turnover of hematopoietic cells and promotes telomere recombination initiated by short telomeres. Telomere shortening has also been linked to human aging and cancer development, with oxidative stress as a major contributing factor. 8-oxo-7, 8-dihydroguanine is among the most common oxidative DNA lesions, and is substrates for OGG1-initiated DNA base excision repair. Mammalian telomeres consist of triple guanine repeats and are subject to oxidative guanine damage. Here, we investigated the impact of oxidative guanine damage and its repair by OGG1 on telomere integrity. We demonstrated that oxidative guanine damage can arise in telomeres where it affects length homeostasis, recombination, DNA replication, and DNA breakage repair. We also examined if telomeric DNA is particularly susceptible to oxidative guanine damage and if telomere specific factors affect the incision of oxidized guanines by OGG1. We showed that the GGG sequence context of telomere repeats and certain telomere configurations may contribute to telomere vulnerability to oxidative DNA damage processing.

The paper deals with the work of Maurice Donzel as translator (pen-name Parijanine). A witness of the Russian Revolution, translator of Lenin and Trotsky, on returning to France he continued to collaborate with the communist press and became the first and chief translator of Ivan Bounine. Based on correspondence between M. Donzel with Ivan Bounine from the Russian archive in Leeds, of Ivan Bounine with R. Rolland and M. Donzel with M. Martinet from the manuscript collection of the Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris the paper shows efforts made not only to translate Bounine into French but also to translate him into a different ideological camp. In 1923 such an approach seemed possible as shown by the publication of the story “The mad artist” (“Le fol artiste”, transl. M. Parijanine) in the first issue of the journal “Europe” and also in the nascent cooperation with Romain Rolland. The paper analyses the characteristics of this translation, where Bounine’s parody “birth of a new man” becomes “Nativity of the New Man!” At the same time Bounine’s translator applies all his knowledge of languages and ideological codes to trans-late the “counter-revolutionary” in his milieu Bounine from “forbidden” to “acceptable reading”, suggesting raising to Bounine’s level as well as “appropriating” him to the cause. The appendix is a first publication of correspondence between M. Donzel and his colleagues from “L’Humanité”, of correspondence between Ivan Bounine and Romain Rolland and extracts from the diaries of Romain Rolland, 1922–1923 and 1928.

Tämä tarkoittaa ensinnäkin yhtiön johdon vakuutusta osakkeiden merkintähinnan tulemisesta yhtiölle. Lisäksi rekisteriviranomaiselle on toimitettava uusien osakkeiden rekisteri-ilmoituksen yhteydessä tilintarkastajan todistus maksun tulemisesta yhtiölle, jos yhtiössä on oltava lain tai yhtiöjärjestyksen perusteella tilintarkastaja. Mikäli yhtiöllä ei ole tilintarkastajaa, on toimitettava muu selvitys eli lähinnä kuitti tai tiliote todisteeksi osakkeiden merkintähintamaksun tulemisesta yhtiölle. Tilintarkastajan todistusta koskevasta vaatimuksesta olisi aiheellista luopua yksityisten yhtiöiden osalta, koska vaatimus aiheuttaa tarpeettomia kustannuksia ja ajallista viivettä uusien osakkeiden antamisen yhteydessä. Riittävänä maksukontrollina olisikin kaikkien yksityisten osakeyhtiöiden osalta pidettävä johdon vakuutusta ja selvityksen eli lähinnä kuitin tai tiliotteen toimittamista rekisteriviranomaiselle. Osakeyhtiölakia olisikin perusteltua muuttaa tältä osin.
