The currently used theory of both bright and dark spatial photorefractive (PR) solitons is a phenomenological theory. In the work we consider the dynamics of dark beams using a microscopic model based on the PR transport equations. It is generally believed that such a theory is more accurate. It has been found that these two approaches can give completely different predictions regarding the formation time of dark beams. The discrepancies can reach up to two orders of magnitude. An approximate analytical solution was presented and a new time constant was introduced taking into account crystals from three classes of PR materials: ferroelectrics, sillenites and semiconductors. In this paper, heavy metal oxide glasses co-doped with erbium and holmium ions have been synthesized. Glass composition, based on the bismuth and germanium oxides, has been selected in terms of high thermal stability (delta T = 125 °C), high refractive index (n = 2.19) and low maximum phonon energy (hvmax = 724 cm-1). Up-conversion luminescence spectra under the 980 nm laser diode excitation have been observed as a result of radiative transitions within the quantum energy level structures of Er3+ and Ho3+ ions. Optimization of rare earth ions content has been conducted, the highest emission intensity in the visible wavelength range has been observed in glass co-doped with molar concentration 0.5 Er2O3 / 0.5 Ho2O3. Since the Jin Hou Su chime-bells from the cemetery of the Jin lords at Tianma-Qucun, Shanxi, became known to the scholarly world, the problem of the dates contained in its inscription has attracted the attention of scholars both in and outside of China. In this article we discuss two aspects of this problem. First, while the “thirty-third year” date of the inscription must certainly refer to King Xuan's reign, which is to say 795 B.C., the four full date notations of the inscription are incompatible with this year, but are instead compatible with the following year, 794 B.C. This article suggests two ways to reconcile this discrepancy. Second, while there can be no doubt that Jin Hou Su is Jin Xian Hou, the “Jin shijia” chapter of the Shi ji gives his dates of reign as 822 to 812 B.C., which is in turn incompatible with either 795 or 794 B.C. However, in the Shi ji's genealogy of Jin lords, the son of Xian Hou is Mu Hou and the grandson of Mu Hou is Zhao Hou, which contradicts the zhao-mu structure of the Zhou ancestral system. Therefore, we propose that the Shiji has reversed the order of Xian Hou and Mu Hou, such that Xian Hou's reign actually extended from King Xuan's thirty-third year through his forty-third year (795-785 B.C.). Not only does this simple change in the genealogy of the Jin lords resolve the problem of the dates in the Jin Hou Su bells inscription, but it also serves to explain an entire array of problems in the chronology of early China.

We explore various aspects of electrochemistry and photoelectrochemistry using in situ spectroscopy of electrode (metal) and photoelectrode (semiconductor) interfaces under electrochemical working conditions. Using sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy, we measure the voltage dependence of the orientation of D2O molecules at a graphene electrode surface, which enables us to extract the free energy orienting potential of interfacial water.1 In particular, we measure the “free OD” feature in the spectra, which corresponds to the topmost water molecule that is rotated up out of the bulk water solution and is, therefore, not hydrogen bonded. Using transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS), we measure the lifetime of hot electrons photoexcited in plasmon resonant nanostructures.5 In a similar study, we use transient reflectance spectroscopy (TRS) to measure the photoexcited carrier dynamics in a GaP/TiO2 photoelectrode, as well as the electrostatic field dynamics at this semiconductor-liquid interface in situ under various electrochemical potentials.2 Here, the electrostatic fields at the surface of the semiconductor are measured via Franz−Keldysh oscillations (FKO). These spectra reveal that the nanoscale TiO2 protection layer enhances the built-in field and charge separation performance of GaP photoelectrodes. Using surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy, we monitor local electric fields via Stark-shifts of nitrile-functionalized silicon photoelectrodes.6 By monitoring Stark shifts in graphene-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (GERS), we measure local electric fields and local charge densities at monolayer graphene electrode surfaces.3 Lastly, we measure the stacking dependence of monolayer WSe2/MoSe2 heterostructures and observe resonant excitation of interlayer excitons for photocatalytic energy conversion.4 Montenegro, A., C. Zuo Zhen-Guan is a modern Moscow composer of Chinese origin, whose life and creative work are largely associated with Russian culture. In his versatile oeuvre, which includes different genres, Zuo Zhen-Guan combines elements of Russian and Chinese musical cultures in an organic way. Chinese traditions are found in almost all of the composer's works. These can be seen in his references to traditional philosophy, religion and poetry, as well as in his devotion to particular themes and subjects. The images of his works are specific, they are expressed in the distinctive features of the composer's musical style, in the sonorous and rhythmic components of the musical language, in the timbre solutions and genre combinations. The purpose of this study is to identify the timbre solutions through which Zuo Zhen- Guan embodies the flavor of Chinese traditional instruments in his chamber compositions. The range of tasks included highlighting the features of Zuo Zhen-Guan's oeuvre; presenting a panorama of Chinese traditional instruments; and analyzing the timbre solutions in his chamber works — the Cello Sonata and the Triptych for three flutes.

<i>Objective: </i>The objective of this study was to analyse and compare of the clinical effects of two surgical methods in the treatment of Zhang-Hou fracture; <i>Method</i>: A total of 34 patients with Zhang-Hou fracture diagnosed in our hospital from 2020.08 to 2022.06 were reviewed. Among them, 17 patients were treated with tibial intramedullary nail internal fixation and 17 patients with traditional steel plate internal fixation. The blood loss, operation time, fracture healing time, excellent rate of affected limb function and postoperative complications were compared between the two groups. <i>Result</i>: The operation time, intraoperative blood loss and fracture healing time were shorter in the intramedullary nail group, and the excellent rate of limb function in the intramedullary nail group was higher than that in the plate group 6 months after operation, but there was no significant difference between the two groups 12 months after operation. All the patients in the intramedullary nail group hadn’t serious complications after operation. Among the 17 patients in the plate group, 1 patient had wound infection and 1 patient had delayed fracture healing. <i>Conclusion</i>: In the clinical treatment of Zhang-Hou fracture, tibial intramedullary nail internal fixation not only has the advantages of short operation time, less trauma and quick recovery after operation, but also has better functional recovery of the affected limb and less postoperative complications. However, clinicians' learning curve of tibial intramedullary nail internal fixation is relatively long.

In recent years, many attempts have been made to improve the sensory properties of SnO2, including design of sensors based on one-dimensional nanostructures of this material, such as nanofibers, nanotubes or nanowires. One of the simpler methods of producing one-dimensional tin oxide nanomaterials is to combine the electrospinning method with a sol-gel process. The purpose of this work was to produce SnO2 nanowires using a hybrid electrospinning method combined with a heat treatment process at the temperature of 600 °C and to analyze the morphology and structure of the one-dimensional nanomaterial produced in this way. We compare major factor models and find that the Stambaugh and Yuan (2016) 4-factor model is the overall winner in the time-series domain. The Hou, Xue, and Zhang (2015) q-factor model takes second place and the Fama and French (2015) 5-factor model and the Barillas and Shanken (2018) 6-factor model jointly take third place. The pairwise cross-sectional R2 and the multiple model comparison tests show that the Hou et al. (2015) q-factor model, the Fama and French (2015) 5-factor and 4-factor models, and the Barillas and Shanken (2018) 6-factor model take equal first place in the horse race.

However, the genus name Camptodontus is a junior homonym of the beetle genus Camptodontus Dejean, 1826. Under Article 23.1 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN 1999) Dejean’s 1826 name has priority.

This article is about improving the quality of choral conducting education in China and, in this regard, the authority of the conductor's profession. Choral conductors are working to update the methodological literature, which should help to improve the Chinese system of choral conducting education. A great contribution to the development of choral conducting specialty was made by such masters as Zhou Shuang, the first professional vocal teacher in the modern history of China and the first female choirmaster and composer in China, as well as conductors Yang Jiaren, Ma Geshun, Wu Lingfen, who got their choral conducting education at the Moscow Conservatory. Zhang Shizhong made a considerable contribution to the development of choral art in China. He actively worked in the field of children's choral education, which has not been cultivated in China for a long time. Zhang Shizhong tirelessly promoted the art of choral singing in Beijing secondary schools. His monograph “Methods of Working with a Children’s Choir” was the culmination of this work. Equally active in choral conducting are young specialists such as Leon Chu and Patrick Chiu, who not only lead choirs in Hong Kong, but also organize various choral festivals and competitions.

Abstract. This paper is a revision of Brady’s 1869 study of the Ostracoda of Hong Kong in ‘Les Fonds de la Mer’. In this he described the following nine new species: Cyrherella cingulata, Bairdia elegans, Bythocythere orientalis, Loxoconcha sinensis, L. hastata, Cytheridea impressa, Cythere cymba, C. euplectella and C. salebrosa. A detailed reappraisal of Brady’s original material which is deposited in the Hancock Museum, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK, and the Centre d’Etudes et de Recherches Scientifiques, Biarritz, France has revealed that the specimens of L. hastata are apparently lost. Holotypes and lectotypes have been designated by the authors for the other eight species. Those species which were subsequently recorded by Brady (1880) in the Challenger Report, such as C. cingulata, B. orientalis, L. sinensis and C. euplectella are demonstrated not to be conspecific with their original types first described in 1869. The following 10 species, Bythoceratina virgatella Hu, 1983 and B. cassidoidea Zhao, 1985; Cyprideis yehi Hu & Yeh, 1978, Sinocytheridea sinensis Hou. 1978, S. latiovata Hou & Chen, 1982, 5. lotjga Hou & Chen, 1982 and Eucytheridea sinobesani Hu, 1984: Cythereis subconvexa Kajiyama, 1913 and Aurila miii Ishizaki, 1968: Cythereis assimilis Kajiyama. 1913 are placed by the authors in the synonymies of Brady’s B. orientalis, C. impressa, C. cymba and C. salebrosa respectively.

Sulfur- and Coking-tolerant Anodes for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells Zhijun Liu,1 Yucun Zhou,1 Weilin Zhang,1 Jie Hou,1 Xueyu Hu,1 Meilin Liu1, * 1 School of Materials Science and Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia 30332-0245, United States Abstract Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) have potential to be one of the most efficient systems for direct conversion of a wide variety of chemical fuels into electricity. 1-3 However, the lack of sulfur- and coking-tolerant anodes still hinders the development of direct hydrocarbon-fueled SOFCs for efficient and cost-effective operation. The conventional Ni-based anodes may suffer from carbon deposition and sulfur poisoning when they are directly exposed to sulfur-containing hydrocarbon fuels, resulting in degradation in performance or even destruction of the anodes. 4-6 In this presentation, we will report a conventional Ni-Zr0.84Y0.16O2-δ (YSZ) anode decorated with Ce and Ba-based catalyst coatings to significantly enhance the sulfur and coking tolerance. Results suggest that the enhanced sulfur tolerance is attributed to the evenly distributed Ce-based catalyst on the inner surface of the porous Ni-YSZ anode while the enhanced coking tolerance is benefited from the Ba-based catalyst layer on the top of the anode. SOFCs with the catalysts-modified Ni-YSZ anodes show minimal degradation when hydrogen with 100 ppm H2S is used as the fuel. More importantly, stable operation is demonstrated for direct utilization of sulfur-containing liquid fuels (e.g., octane and gasoline). We estimate conditional multifactor models over a large cross section of stock returns matching 25 CAPM anomalies. Using conditioning information associated with different instruments improves the performance of the Hou, Xue, and Zhang (HXZ) (2015) and Fama and French (FF) (2015), (2016) models. The largest increase in performance holds for momentum, investment, and intangibles-based anomalies. Yet, there are significant differences in the performance of scaled models: HXZ clearly dominates FF in explaining momentum and profitability anomalies, while the converse holds for value–growth anomalies. Thus, the asset pricing implications of alternative investment and profitability factors (in a conditional setting) differ in a nontrivial way.

AbstractThe paper attempts to make sense of two radically changed characters in two early sequels to Honglou meng. One is the managerial Daiyu of Hou Honglou meng, the other is the military Baochai of Honglou fumeng. The analysis begins with a comparison to oral literature, especially the genre known as zidishu. It concludes that the likeliest influences lie elsewhere, perhaps in such vernacular novels as Shuihu zhuan and the rhymed prosimetric text Zaisheng yuan. Readerly dissatisfaction with the parent novel certainly also played a role. There are some grounds on which to argue that women readers had input into Baochai's transformation, although the case cannot be made for sure.

In this work, a compact, stable dual-wavelength Q-switched laser with a multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) slurry as saturable absorber (SA) which is independent of any host polymer has been demonstrated. The MWCNTs slurry is fabricated and the peak shift is investigated using Raman spectroscopy.The passively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) oscillated simultaneously at 1532.32 nm and 1556.97 nm with 24.67 nm peak separation, at threshold and maximum input power of 26mW and 74mW respectively.By increasing the input pump power from 36 mW to 74 mW, the pulse train repetition rate increases from 25 kHz to 78 kHz, while the pulse width is reduced from 17.84 us to 5.24 ?s. The generated pulse produced maximum pulse energy and maximum peak power of 11.97 nJ and 2.05 mW, respectively at maximum input pump power. The recorded signal to noise ratio is about 62 dB and shows that the proposed MWCNTs slurry based SAis able to generate dual wavelength Q-switched pulse laser with high stability pulse. Rechargeable lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries represent an attractive, “beyond Li-ion”, battery technology because they offer a high specific energy of 2,500 Wh/kg at the material level1 and 550 Wh/kg at the cell level.2 However, Li-S batteries face substantial technical challenges that have thus far prevented the realization of the battery’s tremendous performance potentials.3 One of the major technical challenges is low practical specific capacity and fast performance degradation due to the formation, migration, and shuttling of intermediate lithium polysulfides (PSs). Several strategies have been used to trap the PS species either chemically or physically; however, they either incur increased cost due to the use of expensive catalysts4 or suffer from the reduced battery specific energy due to added inactive weights from the cell design.5,6 We will present a novel strategy to address the PS-shuttle issue using a nanolayer polymer modified high surface area carbon (NPC) as a new type of PS-trapping material.7 When thin films of NPC were coated on sulfur electrodes (NPC-S), we found that our NPC-S based Li-S battery demonstrated a high discharge specific capacity (~1,600 mAh/g) that is nearing sulfur’s theoretical specific capacity. Our molecular dynamics simulation suggests such an excellent performance is attributed to NPC’s strong PS trapping capability via dipole-dipole interactions. We will show that, using a sustainable starting material, our approach is low-cost and economically scalable for the advanced Li-S battery technology. References Zhang, S. Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) possess high theoretical energy density, becoming a promising next-generation energy storage system.1, 2 However, the applications of Li metal anodes are restricted by the Li dendrite formation, repeated formation and fracturing of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), and large volume expansion, resulting in severe “dead lithium” and subsequent short circuiting.3, 4 Herein, differing from conventional interfacial engineering or current-collector designs with numerous lithiophilic site, fundamental novel insights of Li plating kinetics via using single-atomic catalyst (SAC) activators to boost Li diffusion behaviors is proposed to realize delocalized deposition.5, 6 Specifically, via the aid of series of characterizations and theoretical simulations, the SACs have the ability in decreasing barriers of desolvation, Li ion transport or Li atom diffusion and we have unambiguously depicted that the SACs serve as kinetic activators in propelling the surface spreading and lateral redistribution of the lithium atoms for achieving dendrite-free plating morphology. We study the problem of online learning with varying feature spaces. The problem is challenging because, unlike traditional online learning problems, varying feature spaces can introduce new features or stop having some features without following a pattern. Other existing methods such as online streaming feature selection (Wu et al. 2013), online learning from trapezoidal data streams (Zhang et al. 2016), and learning with feature evolvable streams (Hou, Zhang, and Zhou 2017) are not capable to learn from arbitrarily varying feature spaces because they make assumptions about the feature space dynamics. In this paper, we propose a novel online learning algorithm OLVF to learn from data with arbitrarily varying feature spaces. The OLVF algorithm learns to classify the feature spaces and the instances from feature spaces simultaneously. To classify an instance, the algorithm dynamically projects the instance classifier and the training instance onto their shared feature subspace. The feature space classifier predicts the projection confidences for a given feature space. The instance classifier will be updated by following the empirical risk minimization principle and the strength of the constraints will be scaled by the projection confidences. Afterwards, a feature sparsity method is applied to reduce the model complexity. Experiments on 10 datasets with varying feature spaces have been conducted to demonstrate the performance of the proposed OLVF algorithm. Moreover, experiments with trapezoidal data streams on the same datasets have been conducted to show that OLVF performs better than the state-of-the-art learning algorithm (Zhang et al. 2016).

The purpose of the study is to identify and scientifically substantiate the extent to which traditional national culture has influenced the creation of modern Chinese piano music. Exploring the principles of modern Chinese composers' work with folklore, the author reveals the main trends in Chinese piano music at the present time. The scientific novelty lies in the consideration of various ways of integrating traditional Chinese musical culture into the piano works of the XXth – XXIst centuries. It was found that Chinese composers show a strong orientation towards the national tradition. The main idea of developing this trend is to turn to the roots as well as the cultural origins. This enables contemporary authors to successfully combine traditional musical means with innovative creative pursuits. The works of Li Yinghai, San Tong, He Lutin, Zhao Xiaosheng and Zhu Wanhua showed that the manifestations of national colour in piano works are as diverse as entire Chinese culture. The study also established a profound relationship between the figurative, genre and compositional uniqueness of the piano music of Chinese composers with the national cultural heritage.

Until Recently, our understanding of the earliest history of the fish has been fragmentary in terms of the fossil record and conjectural with respect to many details of phylogeny. Fortunately, significant new information has become available in recent years, most notably from the discoveries of at least three taxa of agnathan fish from the Lower Cambrian Chengjiang Lagerstätte of Yunnan, China (Shu et al., 1999, 2003; Shu, 2003; see also Hou et al., 2002; Hou et al., 2004, p. 192-193; Zhang and Hou, 2004). Two of the taxa (Haikouichthys and Zhangjianichthys) are represented by numerous specimens, but it is noteworthy that amongst the forty-odd Burgess Shale-type occurrences apart from the Chengjiang Lagerstätte, chordates (or indeed cephalochordates and urochordates) are otherwise unknown. The one exception is the Burgess Shale itself, characterized by the rather enigmatic Pikaia gracilens (Conway Morris, 1982, 1998) and the much rarer chordate described herein. Apart from this exceptionally preserved material, the fossil record effectively only begins in the Ordovician (e.g., Sansom et al., 2001, 2005; Sansom and Smith, 2005), in as much putative fish scales from the latest Cambrian (Young et al., 1996) may be better interpreted as arthropodan (see Smith et al., 2001, p. 78). The difficulties of interpreting what is overall an extremely patchy record are further compounded by the fact that the relevance to this early history of the extant agnathan hagfish and lamprey has remained (and indeed to some extent remains) problematic, given the uncertainty as to which of the presumed archaic features have been overprinted by specializations for modes of life that might have had little counterpart in the ancestral forms.

The article is devoted to the oldest composer of China Du Mingxin, who was among the founders of the new musical culture in the Celestial Empire. He received his musical education at the Composition Department of the Historical and Theoretical Faculty of the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory. He graduated with high honours following an individual study program. The article is the first to publish Du Mingxin's autobiography written back in 1954 when he was a student at the Moscow State Conservatory, as well as the text of an interview given to the author of the article in 2020. At the age of 93, Du Mingxin is creating new compositions and enjoys communicating with younger composers, among whom there are many of his famous students: Shi Fu, Liu Sola, Ye Xiaogang, Qu Xiaosong, Wang Liling, Zhao Giping, Jin Ping and others. It is noted that the personality and work of Du Mingxin are very popular nowadays: about 170 articles were written about him, dozens of dissertations were defended on his work and a voluminous monograph was written. The process of studying the work of the famous Chinese composer is actively continuing.

VANET is an ad-hoc network implemented on vehicle communication to ensure traffic safety and traffic management efficiency. VANET security is a concern because of various vulnerabilities, especially from authentication criteria that the attacker can exploit. VANET is vulnerable to Sybil attack, entity impersonation, message modification, and identity falsification. Several mechanisms and protocols have been developed to address these vulnerabilities. The design of the VANET authentication protocol also needs to be proven using formal methods to ensure that the protocol meets the required security criteria. In this research, the security of VANET authentication protocol developed by Zhao et al. was analyzed using the Datta et al. security protocol analysis method. Instead of BAN Logic, the Scyther tool was used to verify security claims and find possible attacks. Our Security analysis results show that Zhao et al.'s protocol does not meet confidentiality and entity authentication criteria. Scyther tool can find attacks on nonce confidentiality and man-in-the-middle attack. Therefore, we modify Zhao et al. protocol by adding signature and session key confirmation to improve its security. Based on analysis results, our modified Zhao et al. authentication protocol met confidentiality and entity authentication criteria. The use of signature and session key confirmation prevents man-in-the-middle attack and protects nonce confidentiality. Therefore, our research concludes that modified Zhao et al. authentication protocol more secure than the original protocol in terms of nonce and session key confidentiality, aliveness, weak agreement, non-injective agreement, and non-injective synchronization.

The article is devoted to the history of the formation of the piano concerto genre in the musical art of China. Due to the late development of the piano, an instrument alien to the culture of the Celestial Empire, all the stages of mastering the piano and comprehending its specifics by Chinese musicians have been completed in just over a hundred years. Despite the fact that the piano concerto came to the attention of Chinese authors much later than other European genres, it turned out to be very consonant with their mentality. The work chronologises the gradual development of the piano concerto in Chinese musical culture — through the “introduction” of classical examples of European composers into the repertoire in the early XXth century, to its development first by the Russian-born composer A. Avshalomov, and then by Chinese composers Jiang Wenye and Zhang Xiaohu. Based on the research of musicologists Guo Hao and Wu Jiajun, the article defines the periodization of the formation of the piano concerto in China and notes the characteristic trends in the work of Chinese composers in their approach to the interpretation of this genre and their special attitude to the programme. The paper reveals the constant features of the classical piano concerto mastered by Chinese composers and the new things they brought to this genre in the process of adaptating it based on the national musical tradition.

Abstract Background: Previous studies showed that higher magnesium intake was linked to a lower risk of liver cancer. However, the relationship between blood magnesium level and the risk of liver cancer has not been fully established, especially among cirrhosis patients where magnesium deficiency commonly occurred. To address this knowledge gap, we have established a prospective cohort of patients with liver cirrhosis based on real-world, electronic health record data. Methods: In the Mass General Brigham Biobank, a biorepository of consented patients, we established a prospective cohort by identifying liver cirrhosis patients using the International Classification of Diseases 9th and 10th version codes (ICD-9: 571.2, 571.5, and 571.6; ICD-10: K70.3, K74.3-6). We excluded patients with liver cancer history or without blood magnesium assessment at the time of cirrhosis diagnosis (baseline). We identified subsequent incident liver cancer (ICD-9: 155; ICD-10: C22) and levels of liver function biomarkers assessed at each hospital visit, including alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). We used Cox regression models to generate ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for developing liver cancer according to quartiles (Qs) of baseline blood magnesium levels, adjusting for age, sex, race, smoking status, alcohol intake, physical activity, body mass index, diabetes, ALT, and hepatitis B/C infection. We used generalized estimating equation (GEE) models to estimate the associations between baseline blood magnesium levels and repeated measurements of liver function biomarkers after cirrhosis diagnosis. Results: We included 1257 liver cirrhosis patients (median age at diagnosis 59.5 years; 36% female; 87% white) with magnesium levels measured at baseline. During a median follow-up period of 3.55 (range: 0.1-12) years from liver cirrhosis diagnosis, 106 developed liver cancer. In multivariable-adjusted Cox models, higher baseline blood magnesium (Q4: ≥2.10 mg/dL vs. Q1: <1.80 mg/dL) was associated with a lower risk of liver cancer (HRQ4 vs. Q1 = 0.57; 95% CI: 0.33, 0.99; p-trend =0.03). Results remained similar in 1-year lagged analysis. In multivariable-adjusted GEE models, higher magnesium was associated with a slower change of ALT (coefficientQ4 vs. Q1 = -7.09; 95% CI: -12.6, -1.62) and AST (coefficientQ4 vs. Q1 = -8.06; 95% CI: -13.9, -2.25). Conclusions: In a prospective cohort of high-risk population with liver cirrhosis, higher blood magnesium was associated with a lower risk of developing liver cancer and a slower change of biomarkers suggestive of liver function. Magnesium is implicated in liver carcinogenesis and progression, therefore monitoring and maintaining blood magnesium could be important to delay the progression from cirrhosis to cancer. Rechargeable lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries represent one of the most promising “Beyond Li-ion” battery chemistries due to their high theoretical specific energies ~2,500 Wh/kg.1,2 However, Li-S batteries face substantial technical challenges that must be overcome before they become commercially viable.3 One of the major technical challenges is low practical specific capacity and fast performance degradation due to the formation, migration, and shuttling of intermediate lithium polysulfides (PSs). Several strategies have been used to trap the PS species either chemically or physically; however, they either incur increased cost due to the use of expensive catalysts4 or suffer from the reduced battery specific energy due to added inactive weights from the cell design.5,6 We showed previously a novel strategy to address the PS-shuttle issue using a nanolayer polymer modified high surface area carbon (NPC) as a new type of PS-trapping material (Fig. 1a).7,8 When thin films of NPC were coated on sulfur electrodes (NPC-S), we found that our NPC-S based Li-S battery demonstrated a high discharge specific capacity (~1,600 mAh/g) that is nearing sulfur’s theoretical specific capacity (Fig. 1b). We also showed that our molecular dynamics simulation suggested the observed high specific capacity was attributed to NPC’s strong PS trapping capability via dipole-dipole interactions (Fig. 1c). In this presentation, we will show our continued research effort on this novel approach to further stabilize the long-term battery cycle stability and battery product scalability. The use of subjective end-points such as VAS pain scales in studies of acupuncture for chronic neck pain have resulted in equivocal results. This study introduces an objective parameter as the primary end-point for the assessment of acupuncture in patients with acute torticollis (stiff neck). Eighteen patients underwent a single 20-minute treatment session, with needling of two acupuncture points Hou Hsi (SI-3) and Luo Zhen (M-UE-24), on the side ipsilateral to the predominantly involved side of the neck. Measuring the angle of lateral head rotation using a simple compass and protractor, a mean improvement of 52.9% was found, more so among those presenting earlier (< 24 hours) as opposed to later (> 72 hours; p = 0.034). The use of objective parameters, as seen in acupuncture research of the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts, should be incorporated into studies of acute and chronic neck pain. The use of sham needle points and placebo needles is problematic since both may elicit physiological responses.

Abstract 4-1BB (CD137) is a key costimulatory immunoreceptor and a promising therapeutic target in cancer. CEACAM5 (CEA) is a well-established tumor associated antigen overexpressed in many cancers, including colorectal, gastric, lung, pancreatic cancer, liver, breast and thyroid cancers. BGB-B167 is a novel immunoglobulin G (IgG)-based bispecific antibody targeting 4-1BB and CEA and is under clinical development for the treatment of advanced or metastatic solid tumors in humans. BGB-B167 binds to its target proteins with high specificity and affinity. Potent and CEA-dependent functional activities were demonstrated using peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC)-based immune cell activation and cytotoxicity assays. In humanized 4-1BB knock-in mice bearing human CEA-expressing tumors, BGB-B167 exhibited potent, dose-associated single-agent efficacy as well as synergistic antitumor activity in combination with anti-PD-1 antibody. BGB-B167 was well tolerated in 1-month repeat-dose toxicology study in cynomolgus monkeys. Here, we describe the characterization of BGB-B167 with regard to preclinical proof-of-concept and basic drug-like properties. The combined dataset provides an overview on the design, mode of action, preclinical pharmacology and safety profile of BGB-B167. Abstract Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) represents a set of heterogeneous myeloid malignancies hallmarked by mutations in epigenetic modifiers, transcription factors, and kinases that can cause epigenetic reshaping. It is unclear to what extent AML mutations drive chromatin 3D structure alteration and contribute to myeloid transformation. We first performed Hi-C and whole-genome sequencing in 25 AML patient samples and seven healthy donor samples, and identified recurrent alterations of A/B compartments, TADs, and chromatin loops that are unique to different subtypes. To investigate how altered chromatin organization contributes to transcriptional misregulation, we performed RNA-Seq, ATAC-Seq and CUT&ag for CTCF, H3K27ac, and H3K27me3 in the same AML samples. We identified extensive and recurrent AML-specific promoter-enhancer and promoter-repressor loops. We performed both CRISPR deletion and interference experiments and validated two repressor loops that downregulated cancer related genes IKZF2 and RTTN. Furthermore, by using our recently developed algorithm, we identified structural variation-induced enhancer-hijacking and repressor-hijacking events in AML samples. We further demonstrated the role of hijacked enhancers in AML cell growth by CRISPR screening, and the role of hijacked repressors by CRISPR de-repression. We performed whole-genome bisulfite sequencing in 20 AML and normal samples, and showed the delicate relationship between DNA methylation, CTCF binding and 3D genome structure. Finally, by treating the AML cells with the DNA hypomethylating agent and performing triple knockdown of DNMT1/3A/3B, we demonstrated the impact of altered DNA methylation on gene expression and 3D genome organization. Overall this study provides an invaluable resource for leukemia studies and also highlighted the role of repressor-loops and hijacked cis-elements in gene regulation and human diseases. Background:microRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that can ignite the degradation of mRNAs or inhibit the protein translation and are therefore essential for several physiological and pathological functions. miRNAs can regulate up to 60 % of human mRNA, including genes related to cartilage development, homeostasis, and OA pathology. For example, miR-9 inhibits matrix metalloproteinase 13 or miR-140 expression level correlates with the disease progression of knee OA (Zhang et al.; Chao et al.). Under certain circumstances, miRNAs can be released into the body fluids and easily be detected in the blood samples. Therefore, miRNAs are hot candidates as biomarkers for early diagnosis or structural progression of OA.Objectives:The aim of this study was to evaluate circulating miRNAs in patients with hand osteoarthritis (HOA) and healthy individuals. Simultaneously, we studied specific miRNAs in order to differentiate between erosive and non-erosive subsets of the disease.Methods:Eight patients with HOA (erosive: n=4, 3 females, mean age=63.7±7 yrs; non-erosive: n=4, 3 females, mean age= 62.4±6 yrs) and 4 healthy controls (3 females, mean age=63.5±7 yrs) were included in this study. Firstly, Advance TaqMan low-density assay (TLDA) was performed for the purpose of miRNA high-throughput screening. Differently expressed miRNAs were further verified by real-time qPCR on the validation cohort in 31 patients with hand OA (19 females, mean age=66.2±7 yrs, erosive: n=9, non-erosive: n=10, healthy controls: n=12).Results:TLDA profiling displayed 346 circulating miRNAs in plasma of patients with HOA and healthy controls. We demonstrated 40 differently expressed circulating miRNAs in patients with HOA compared with healthy controls. Using a real-time qPCR, we verified increased expression levels of 10 circulating miRNAs in patients with HOA compared with healthy controls, e.g. miR-191-5p (3.4 fold), miR-151a-3p (3.4 fold) or miR-222-3p (2.4 fold). Conditional Privacy Preserving Authentication (CPPA) schemes are an effective way of securing communications in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), as well as ensuring user privacy and accountability. Cryptanalysis plays a crucial role in pointing out the vulnerabilities in existing schemes to enable the development of more resilient ones. In 2019, Zhang proposed a CPPA scheme for VANET security (PA-CRT), based on identity batch verification (IBV) and Chinese Remainder Theorem (CRT). In this paper, we cryptanalyze Zhang’s scheme and point out its vulnerability to impersonation and repudiation attacks. In 2023, Zhang’s scheme was cryptanalyzed by Tao; however, we point out flaws in Tao’s cryptanalysis due to invalid assumptions; hence, we propose countermeasures to Tao’s attacks. Furthermore, in 2021, Xiong proposed a Certificateless Aggregate Signature (CLAS) scheme which is also cryptanalyzed in this paper. Finally, we analyze the causes and countermeasures by pointing out the vulnerabilities in each scheme that enabled us to launch successful attacks and proposing changes that would fortify these schemes against similar attacks in the future.

Abstract Immunotherapy is one of the most effective modern treatments for cancer. While immunotherapy operates through a broad class of mechanisms, modulating immune checkpoints have provided some of the most effective approaches, including inhibition of PD-1/PD-L1 pathway, CTLA-4, LAG-3, OX40, Tim-3, KIR and TIGIT to reverse tumor immune escape.OX40, also known as CD134 or TNFRSF4, is a membrane protein expressed in CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, neutrophils and NK cells. In the process of T cell activation, OX40 plays a synergistic stimulating function by binding with ligand OX40L. OX40 agonist immunotherapy has been previously shown to improve the survival rate of glioblastoma in mice, prevent tumor growth in ovarian cancer, increase the prognostic significance of CD8+ cell infiltration in colorectal cancer, and eliminate the inhibitory function of Foxp3+ Treg cells that constitutively Express OX40. On the contrary, blocking OX40 axis is a promising strategy to treat T cell hyperactivation in autoimmune diseases. As recently reported in the literature, a two-armed, random, double blinded phase 2b clinical trial demonstrated that telazorlimab, an antagonist OX40 antibody developed by Ichnos Sciences, met primary efficacy endpoints in treating atopic dermatitis.In this research, we developed a set of novel antibodies to OX40 using a hybridoma and VHH synthetic library; the set of antibodies includes both agonists and antagonists.We developed one hybridoma origin mAb into a human framework. Agonist activity was equal to MOXR0916 in NF- κB reporter-Jurkat assay, dependent on coupling by proteinA/cell-bound CD32b, non-competing with OX40L, and epitope mapped to domain 2+3.We identified dozens of binders from our synthetic single domain VH library. After construction into a IgG1Fc fusion form, 4 VHHs were obtained with significant agonistic activity, dependent on coupling by proteinA/cell bound CD32b. Another 5 VHHs were also obtained with significant antagonistic activity without coupling by proteinA/cell-bound CD32b. The 4 agonistic VHHs were confirmed with binding to domain 1+2, competitive to OX40L’s binding.These VHHs constructs represent a promising set of novel biologics to modulate OX40—as agonists or antagonists—and serve as the basis for development of potential new therapies in the clinic. We report enhanced photocatalysis for H2 evolution and CO2 reduction using TiO2-passivated InP and GaAs photocathodes.1-4 The TiO2 layer makes the InP semiconductor photochemically stable. This represents a major step forward in photocatalysis, which has typically been limited to metal oxide materials. In addition to making these surfaces stable, the TiO2 film, deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD), also provides a substantial enhancement in the efficiency of H2 evolution. We find that passivating GaAs with just a few nm of TiO2 produces a shift in the onset potential of H2 evolution by +0.35 V at 1 mA/cm2 and enhances the photocurrent by 32-fold over bare GaAs (at 0 V vs. RHE). Here, thinner TiO2 films produce a larger enhancement than thicker films, which correlates with the higher density of O-vacancies (i.e., Ti3+ surface states) observed in these thinner films using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). While TiO2 films 1-5nm thick produce large enhancements, no enhancement is observed for TiO2 thicknesses above 10 nm, which are crystalline and, therefore, considerably more insulating than thinner amorphous TiO2 films. Using transient reflectance spectroscopy (TRS), we measure the photoexcited carrier dynamics in a GaP/TiO2 photoelectrode, as well as the electrostatic field dynamics at this semiconductor-liquid interfaces in situ under various electrochemical potentials.5 Here, the electrostatic fields at the surface of the semiconductor are measured via Franz−Keldysh oscillations (FKO). These spectra reveal that the nanoscale TiO2 protection layer enhances the built-in field and charge separation performance of GaP photoelectrodes. The paper is inspired by a spectral decomposition and fractal eigenvectors for a class of piecewise linear maps due to Tasaki et al. [1994] and by an ad hoc explicit derivation of the Heisenberg uncertainty relation based on a Peano–Hilbert planar curve, due to El Nashie [1994]. It is also inspired by an elegant generalization by Zhang [2008] of the exact solution by Onsager [1944] to the problem of description of the Ising lattices [Ising, 1925]. This generalization involves, in particular, opening the knots by a rotation in a higher dimensional space and studying important commutators in the corresponding algebra. The investigations of Onsager and Zhang, involving quaternion matrices of order being a power of two, can be reformulated with the use of the "quaternionic" sequence of Jordan algebras implied by the fundamental paper of Jordan et al. [1934]. It is closely related to Heisenberg's approach to quantum theories, as summarized by him in his essay dedicated to Bohr on the occasion of Bohr's seventieth birthday (1955). We show that the Jordan structures are closely related to some types of fractals, in particular, fractals of the algebraic structure. Our study includes fractal renormalization and the renormalized Dirac operator, meromorphic Schauder basis and hyperfunctions on fractal boundaries, and a final discussion.

A star is a graph in which some node is incident with every edge of the graph, i.e., a graph of diameter at most 2. A star forest is a graph in which each connected component is a star. Given a connected graph G in which the edges may be weighted positively. A spanning star forest of G is a subgraph of G which is a star forest spanning the nodes of G. The size of a spanning star forest F of G is defined to be the number of edges of F if G is unweighted and the total weight of all edges of F if G is weighted. We are interested in the problem of finding a Maximum Weight spanning Star Forest (MWSFP) in G. In [C. T. Nguyen, J. Shen, M. Hou, L. Sheng, W. Miller and L. Zhang, Approximating the spanning star forest problem and its applications to genomic sequence alignment, SIAM J. Comput. 38(3) (2008) 946–962], the authors introduced the MWSFP and proved its NP-hardness. They also gave a polynomial time algorithm for the MWSF problem when G is a tree. In this paper, we present a linear time algorithm that solves the MSWF problem when G is a cactus.

Molecularly defined (photo)electrocatalysts have great potential to perform important energy conversion reactions with high efficiency and selectivity. A particular advantage is their modular design, which allows their reactivity to be tailored to a specific reaction. However, to advance their rational development, a deep mechanistic understanding of the catalytic reactions is required. In situ vibrational spectrochemistry, in particular confocal Raman and infrared absorption spectroscopy, is an extremely powerful method to gain deep insights into the structure and reactivity of electrode-immobilized molecular catalytic systems under operando conditions [1]. Since both vibrational spectroscopic techniques have different selection rules, complementary information about the system under operando conditions can be obtained. In my talk, selected research examples will be used to present the different aspects and features of (photo)electrocatalysis that can be visualized using vibrational spectrochemistry. The target systems presented include, on the one hand, porphyrin- and phthalocyanine-based systems for electrocatalytic oxygen and CO2 reduction [2,3] and, on the other hand, conjugated acetylene polymers for photoelectrocatalytic hydrogen evolution [4]. Spectra evaluation under operando conditions allowed us to demonstrate charge separation and ligand binding within these catalysts, identify the active sites during catalysis, and gain insight into the redox properties, reaction intermediates as well as synergistic effects of dual active sites. Power analysis is a key component of planning prospective studies such as clinical trials. However, some journals in biomedical and psychosocial sciences request power analysis for data already collected and analysed before accepting manuscripts for publication. Many have raised concerns about the conceptual basis for such post-hoc power analyses. More recently, Zhang et al showed by using simulation studies that such power analyses do not indicate true power for detecting statistical significance since post-hoc power estimates vary in the range of practical interests and can be very different from the true power. On the other hand, journals’ request for information about the reliability of statistical findings in a manuscript due to small sample sizes is justified since the sample size plays an important role in the reproducibility of statistical findings. The problem is the wording of the journals' request, as the current power analysis paradigm is not designed to address journals’ concerns about the reliability of the statistical findings. In this paper, we propose an alternate formulation of power analysis to provide a conceptually valid approach to the journals’ wrongly worded but practically significant concern.
