Adolescents leave residential care when they reach the age or time limit for care. If their birth families are unable support them, they will most likely be forced to face the challenges of independent living. The realities and expectations young care leavers face and experienced are really worth studying and exploring. This study investigates the differences between services offered by an independent living program which the young care leavers received and their expectations.The data were from in-depth interviews with the young care leavers, responsible social workers and the internet information in one of the cities in central Taiwan. This study was interviewed with six young care leavers living independently and five social workers. The main results are as follows: (1)Services from independent living programs differ depending on the organization offering them. Contractors for independent living programs offer services such as transitional independent living dormitories, training in daily life arrangement, outdoor experience activities, work practice and internships. The services from independent living programs offered by independent organizations include: inter-organizational collaboration to help with the preparation of independent living, bonus systems to encourage independent living, training for financial management and independent living skills and events that lets people share their independent living experiences. The services offered by both kinds of organizations include: financial aid, rental assistance, regular follow-up on independent living status and the connection of community resources. (2)The independent living assistance services expected by young care leavers are to build independent living concepts and skills beforehand, necessary financial aid, assistance in continued education, to be free of restrictions in transitional dormitories, outdoor experience trainings to expand horizons, job matching services to make job hunting easier, stable emotional support and company, life and career planning and discussions to help them find their way and individualized services that listens to and understands them. (3)The differences between what adolescents expected and the reality of independent living assistance were: financial aid were not properly given, the many rules and restrictions for the independent living dormitories, the lack of career exploring and job matching, turnovers of the responsible social workers affected the building of trust in relationships and the adolescents are not truly understood, making it hard to provide individualized services.

Повний текст джерелаThis qualitative study focuses on the description and assessment of care leavers’ application of social skills into independent living. Information was gathered through semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions. The sample comprised ten young men who had been in the care of GBTSA for at least two years and who left care at the age of 17-19 years between two and five years ago. Findings of the study indicate that care leavers are faced with ongoing challenges that force them to mature more quickly than their other peers. As a result, care leavers often have to rely on skills learned while in care in dealing with these challenges. Care leavers’ understanding of skills learned and how they have used the skills in their adult life were assessed based on their lived experiences. This was done through care leavers identifying the skills they remember learning and reflecting on how they have applied these skills in their adult lives. Based on the objectives of the study and its findings, recommendations are made which include: GBTSA to explore and develop a structured mentoring programme that can be incorporated with its independent living programme to provide ongoing support to care leavers. Concerns were identified in areas such as generalisation and internalisation of skills learned, applicability of skills in “real life” contexts and a need for an ongoing support base to motivate and encourage care leavers.

Повний текст джерелаThe present paper uses life course theory to explore the move toward 'independent living' required of young people leaving care in England and Wales. Informal interview contact with 14 young people who had recently left care was maintained over a period of 12-18 months. Biographical stories constructed from field research are used to consider the social and developmental processes of the life course. The contextual analysis formalized within life course theory focused on the social timing and social construction of independence, revealing the way in which important 'invisibilities' may have social and developmental consequences for care leavers.

The youngsters who are forced to leave home care programs are in need of further appropriate protection whenever they are not able to live with original families. At the age of fifteen to eighteen, those youngsters are facing difficulties in everyday life independently. They earn freedom and the right of decision-making autonomously, at the same time, they feel nervous and fearful on the unexpected future. The most important thing of all for those youngsters is to get a stable employment and earn good enough income. Although some of them benefit from the welfare services, majority of them have to work hard to earn their living. And there are many factors influencing their work life, including the right conception on workplace, the employability, their motivation, skill level, mentality, and their previous work experiences. It’s a hard task they need to confront with, and getting mature from within. Based on the semi-structured interviews with 10 youngsters who are out of home programs and in jobs, 10 employers and 10 social workers, I analyzed qualitatively the perspectives of those three groups, to realize the help those youngsters received and the contents how the youngsters help by themselves. In addition, what the strength and abilities the youngsters have, so they can get jobs and work stably, and go further their independent life in the future.
