Research shows that threats and acts of violence against social workers are common. Those who are subjected to acts of threats or violence, sees these issues as something that belongs to their work as public authorities. This study aims to investigate the experience of threats and violence among social workers. The study is based on a qualitative method in which semi structured interviews have been used, which have been carried out in a county in southern Sweden. The study has a phenomenological approach as it aims to investigate the experiences of a phenomena, which in this study are threats and violence. Through a phenomenological approach, we can capture the social workers experience of threats and violent situations. In order to analyse the work, previous research in the field of threats and violence against social workers has been used together with selected theories. Theories includes symbolic interactionism and the coping strategy. The result of the study shows that various threats are the most common of threats and acts of violence. Threats are also experienced differently, depending on whether the threats are targeted directly against the individual social worker or if it is directed against his family. It also appears that the social workers’ experiences threats as something that happens in the situation. The clients are perceived to be in a stressful situation, which contributes to the social workers not experiencing the threats directed at them as a person.

This thesis examines how work characteristics affect life satisfaction. Specifically addressing the following question: How do jobs and current work characteristics associated with the increased use of ICTs affect job satisfaction and life satisfaction in Europe? The findings of this thesis provide insights that are relevant not only for academia, but also for company organizations, human resources management and policy makers. First, this thesis notes the importance of distinguishing by type of workers concerning wellbeing. Second, the findings show that income plays a relatively small role in all domains of satisfaction. Rather, factors related to working conditions and work organization should be incorporated in job contracts. Third, the effects of ICT are that they moderate the role of the determinants of job satisfaction. Finally, the thesis shows that working life characteristics affect satisfaction with most domains of life. For example, the increasing insecurity in the job market and the challenges experienced by EU workers in achieving a good work-life balance correlate negatively with satisfaction in every domain of life.

Work and family are the central and salient domains in an individual's life. Juggling work and family life have always been a challenge for many employees and families (Hammer et al., 2005). However, with the increased interest in the construct of workfamily enrichment, more attention was given to the positive influences across the life domains. Grzywacz and Butler (2005) found that work-family enrichment improved mental and physical well-being. The objective of this study was twofold; (i) to explore and add to existing research done on work-family enrichment and (ii) investigate the relationships between workfamily enrichment, psychological health and subjective wellbeing of employees within a financial services organisation in South Africa. Three hundred and forty seven questionnaires were administered and one hundred and sixty eight completed questionnaires were returned. Purposive sampling was used to select employees to participate in the study. Data was collected by a self-developed biographical questionnaire, Calson, Kacmar, Wayne, and Grzywacz's (2006) Enrichment Scale, General Health Questionnaire developed by Kalliath, O'Driscoll and Brough (2004) and the Personal Wellbeing Index developed by the International Wellbeing Group (2006). The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyse the data and to interpret the descriptive and inferential statistics. Specifically the Pearson Moment Correlation analysis and the T-Test was used. The results indicated that a relationship between work-to-family enrichment and psychological health exist. There was a significant relationship for family-to-work enrichment and psychological health. Furthermore, results indicated a significant relationship between work-to-family enrichment and subjective wellbeing. A significant relationship between family-to-work enrichment and subjective wellbeing was also found. However, no significant differences were found for gender for both work-to-family and family-to-work enrichment. Future considerations, theoretical implications and recommendations for organisations are discussed.

Cavallaro, Liz. "Employee Wellbeing and Compassion Fatigue among Animal Caregivers| A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study." Thesis, The George Washington University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3740298.
The purpose of this study was to develop an understanding of the experience of employee wellbeing and compassion fatigue (CF) in the animal care industry. According to Figley and Roop (2006) in Compassion Fatigue in the Animal-Care Community, compassion fatigue is found at every level among the caregivers in animal-related fields. Utilizing hermeneutic phenomenology, this study explored the experience of employee wellbeing (EW) and compassion fatigue via interviews with 11 participants who are paid, full-time employees from a diverse array of animal shelters. Data analysis followed van Manen’s (1990) description of the inventive thoughtful attitude, which takes place through an ongoing process of writing and reflecting throughout and after data collection to capture participant narratives.
The interpretation of the findings and incorporation of relevant literature led to the development of six key conclusions: 1. Personal History: Participants’ prior life experiences and personal histories are relevant to, and may have implications for, the experience of compassion fatigue. 2. Social Construct: Participant understanding of compassion fatigue is socially constructed, developed through comparisons to, interactions with and support from others. 3. Dirty Work: The perception of animal caregiving as a form of “dirty work” has consequences for the experience of employee wellbeing and compassion fatigue. 4. Three-Tier Approach: Participants use two frequently promoted strategies to combat compassion fatigue: self-care and compassion satisfaction, but they also engage in proactive behaviors, implying a three-tier approach to coping with and combatting CF and improving employee wellbeing. 5. Levels of Responsibility: Participants believe the responsibility to develop and employ appropriate solutions to address issues of compassion fatigue and employee wellbeing exists on three different levels: individual, organizational, and societal. 6. Primary Outcomes: Two primary outcomes are evident from the experience of compassion fatigue—if caregivers are unable to combat the syndrome, they may reach a breaking point and burn out of the field; alternatively they may overcome CF, continue in their work and thrive.
Implications for research, theory and practice are presented. A better understanding of CF will allow for more effective planning, preparation and intervention at each level of responsibility. The contributions of this study offer constructive ideas for both individuals and organizations to incorporate into their efforts to reduce CF, improve EW, and hopefully avoid burnout and turnover.

This qualitative, exploratory and descriptive study in five cities examines the working conditions, hazards, influencing factors and effects on health experienced by immigrant workers in Spain. A criterion sample was designed. The final sample of 158 documented and undocumented immigrant men and women was determined by saturation of the discourse. Data were collected between September 2006 and May 2007 through semistructured individual interviews and focus groups, using a topic guide. We employed narrative content analysis to examine data according to a mixed-generation scheme. The data demonstrated widespread exposure to a variety of occupational hazards, long work hours, and few days off, as well as discriminatory assignation of tasks. Informants lacked worker safety training, appropriate personal protective equipment, and experience in current jobs.
Most had very little control over elements of their work environment. Finally, informants reported abuses in terms of employment conditions. Health effects reported ranged from the experience or fear of acute injuries, to chronic strain injuries, respiratory and dermatologic responses, to the accumulation of fatigue, sleep affectations, somatic symptoms, and mental health concerns such as anxiety and depressive mood. Differences by documentation status and gender are discussed. These results leave little doubt about the need for better outreach and support for immigrant workers in Spain. Better data collection and surveillance of this worker population is a centrally necessary element of stronger immigrant worker support. Specific areas in need of more study and policy consideration are discussed.

The Swedish national survey "School children's health habits" have since 1985 asked children "What do you think about school these days?". School satisfaction decreases with age and unlike many other questions there are different views from boys 'and girls on this matter. Most obvious in the youngest age group, where girls more often say they feel very well at school (Swedish children's health habits, FHI 2005). In this study eight 12-year-old Swedish school girls from a small town in the west of Sweden describe their feelings about school. My method is to determine their SOC-value through a survey (Margalit & Efrati, 1996) based on Antonovsky's questionnaire for measuring Sense of Coherence (Antonovsky, 1987) and then interview them individually on the subjects of well-being, flow, and praise in school. They may talk freely about these topics and describe their feelings about different aspects of school. By assembling the different parts in the result an illustration of girls' well-being in the school setting is formed.

"Om personalen mår bra, så mår de boende bra : -en studie om trivsel, delaktighet och arbetsmiljö på ett särskilt boende som drivs på entreprenad." Thesis, Örebro University, Department of Behavioural, Social and Legal Sciences, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:oru:diva-1453.
The purpose of this study is to describe how the employees, at a home for care of old people that is run by a private contractor, experience wellbeing, participation and work environment in their daily work. We choose to explore a home for care of old people that is placed in the middle of Sweden and then we choose a qualitative research method. Our research questions are: How do the employees experience their work environment? What influences the experience of wellbeing at work? Do the employees experience that they are involved in their work?
Interviews were conducted with six persons and the questions were of open character. The questions were divided in three areas, participation and influence, wellbeing and work environment. This study is based on these theoretical conceptions and the result and analysis shows on the basis of these conceptions. We also used relevant research from the area. In the chapter were we describe our theoretical conceptions we also describe the work environment act. In the work environment act regulates the work environment and the law is there for prevent ill health and accident at work and to achieve a good work environment. In the chapter we also talk about what distinguish a bureaucratic organization and how it is ruled.
The result in this study shows that the employees at the nursing home enjoy one’s work and the work assignments. They regard that it is a good work environment and they feel involved in their own work situation. Many talked about the stress. To not have time for the work assignments are consider stressing. They also told us that there was some lacks in the work on death of older people, this was something that wasn’t prioritized.

The office environment can variate in different workplaces, therefore it’s important to research how much the physical office environment can influence the employees’ work situation and feeling of community and wellbeing. Previous research has shown that factors such as the amount of people in an office space or the possibility to privacy can influence the employees’ sense of coherence in their work. Even the employees’ experience of the air quality and light has been shown to affect the employees’ behavior at work. In January of 2016 the employees at the Health Care sector in one of the city districts in Göteborgs stad moved their offices, from offices in an old retirement home to a county office building. The purpose of this research is to get a better understanding of how the new office environment have influenced the employees’ experience in regards to their new work situation and feeling of community and wellbeing. The research was conducted with the help of quality based interviews with nine employees and a small observation of the physical work environment at the Heath Care sector’s new office spaces. The major findings in this study showed that the new closeness, were the different functions within the sector now share the same office space, has had a clear influence on the employees work situation and feelings of community and wellbeing. Where the communication between the functions has improved, something that also has improved their conditions for cooperation. The study also showed that the size, the structure and the physical attributed of the office space has had an influence on the employees’ sense of coherence, by creating better conditions for organization, control and cooperation.

Call centres have become an important source for organisations to provide efficient information to their customers through cost-effective communication channels. Call centres are defined as a work environment in which the main business is mediated by computer- and telephone-based technologies that allow the effective distribution of incoming calls to available staff, and permit customer–employee communication simultaneously with the use of display screen equipment (DSE) and instant access to information. Working in a call centre is often linked with high stress levels, difficult customers, shift work, high workload demand, absenteeism and high employee turnover rates. The work characteristics of call centres include performance targets where employees are required to achieve set targets, undergo close performance monitoring, performance appraisal systems, limited task variation, repetitive work and limited autonomy. The physical environment in the call centre is often associated with open-plan office layouts and booths where noise levels and workstations are positioned in close proximity to each other. Wellbeing in call centres has become a concern and the research was undertaken to establish what effects the working environment (physical environment and job characteristics) in call centres in the Cape Metropole has on the wellbeing of call centre agents. A quantitative research method was employed in the study. A structured questionnaire was distributed via SurveyMonkey® to call centre agents from four participating call centres in the Cape Metropole. The combined target population of the four call centres was 760. A sample size of 200 was determined by using the Raosoft Incorporated® calculation tool. Although the aforesaid sample size sufficed, a response rate of 275 was received. Questions relating to job characteristics and significance of the work were based on the Job Diagnostic Survey by Hackman and Oldham. Social support questions were based on the instrument developed by Caplan, Cobb, French, Van Harrison & Pinneau in 1975. Job demand questions were based on the instrument developed by Karasek in 1979, and only the section on job demand was used. Performance monitoring and physical work environment were measured by using the questions based on these variables by Sprigg et al in 2003. Emotional wellbeing questions relating to burnout were measured using the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory. The wellbeing questions relating to vocal health, optical health and auditory health were based on the questionnaires developed by Sprigg et al. in 2003. General health was measured using the “Somatic Complaints” section of the NIOSH Generic Job Stress Questionnaire. Musculoskeletal health problems were measured using the Cornell Musculoskeletal Discomfort Questionnaire (CMDQ) developed by Hedge in 1994. Research question 1 addressed the gender perceptions of job characteristics, physical work environment and emotional and physical wellbeing. A T-test was conducted to answer the research question and the results revealed that there was no significant difference in gender perception on job characteristics; however there was a significant difference in perception of the physical work environment and wellbeing. Research question 2 addressed whether there is a significant difference in emotional and physical wellbeing experienced by call centre agents from various industries. A MANOVA analysis was conducted to determine the significance in industries, p = .015, and an ANOVA analysis was conducted that revealed agents working in the online retail as well as financial service industries were more likely to experience disengagement, p = .035. Research question 3 addressed the factors in the workplace environment that contribute to emotional and physical wellbeing problems. An ANOVA analysis was conducted and the results revealed lack of skills variety, p = .014, contributes to exhaustion; lack of autonomy, p = .040, contributes to disengagement; lack of supervisor support, p = .009, contributes to exhaustion, job demands, p = .000, contribute to exhaustion, performance monitoring, p = .036, contributes to exhaustion; and workstation layout, p = .001, contributes to auditory health problems. Research question 4 addressed whether there is a significant relationship between job characteristics, physical work environment and wellbeing. A Pearson correlation analysis was conducted and the results revealed that there is a significant relationship between job characteristics, physical work environment, and wellbeing. It can be concluded that the workplace environment does have an impact on the wellbeing of call centre agents in the Cape Metropole. It is imperative that the management of call centres understand the nature of the job and how the physical environment contributes to job stress; burnout; vocal, auditory, and optical health problems; and musculoskeletal disorders. The researcher recognises that there are essential job characteristics associated with call centre work but that there are elements of the job that can be redesigned to improve the wellbeing of call centre agents. It is recommended that management implement interventions which will redesign those elements within the workplace environment that contribute to wellbeing issues. The findings of this study add to existing literature and knowledge of the workplace environment and wellbeing of call centre agents.

The purpose of the study is to highlight the importance of studying well-being in projects and contribute to a better understanding of what affects project members' well-being at work. This was investigated through a qualitative approach where ten semi structured interviews were conducted on project members from different branches and organizations. Thematic analysis was conducted and resulted in three themes: My job is important, I am needed! and We are moving forward, which describe factors that are important for project member’s well-being in project work. The analysis of the study connects to PERMA, the Six-factor model of psychological well-being, subjective well-being, Self-determination theory and sense of coherence. Furthermore, are the importance of well-being in project work discussed, the limitations of the study and suggestions for future studies in project management.

The purpose of this study was to explore young women’s perception of factors of wellbeing and compare this perception to their SOC. Eight young women from a socioeconomically vulnerable area participated in interviews and answered a SOC-13 questionnaire. The empirical material was analysed with the Salutogenesis theory and the Systems theory. The results showed that the young women were aware of which factors in the socioeconomically vulnerable area were important for their wellbeing, which were: relationships, sense of companionship, nature and their own responsibility. The results from the SOC-13 questionnaire were mixed, three of the participants were below the Swedish average, two participants were near the Swedish average and three participants were above Swedish average. The study does not show any clear results on how the perception of factors of wellbeing and SOC-13 affects each other.
