This thesis looks at different aspects of workers mobility, firms organization and the political economy of elections. In the first chapter, I analyse—both theoretically and empirically—the effect of an exogenous credit supply shock to the organization of the firm. The understanding of these mechanisms is fundamental to rationalize the real economic consequences of an aggregate negative shock at the micro level and to understand how the organization of the firm can be the target of specific policies that can attenuate the impact of capital shortage on the real economy. The second chapter considers knowledge as a key determinant to the competitiveness and the success of a firm. I start from the idea that firms and their managers acquire knowledge via a variety of different channels, which are often difficult to track down and quantify. By matching employer-employee data with trade data at the firm level-which is itself a novelty in the trade literature the chapter sheds light on the nexus between the export experience acquired by managers in previous firms and their current firm performance. The third chapter embeds labor mobility in multi-country dynamic version of an Eaton and Kortum framework to explain how migration, together with trade, affects the welfare of natives and migrants in different regions in Europe. In the last chapter, I look at the effect of higher turnout on political outcomes. I exploit the exogenous variation in weather conditions on the day of elections and the geography of a country—Italy—to instrument for turnout. Results of the instrumental variable combined with a first difference model explain how a larger political participation affects the electoral outcome.

The relationship between mobility of vested plan participants and the use of reciprocity agreements in multiemployer plans was investigated. The assumption that pension benefit forfeiture retards worker mobility was considered. The assumption that worker mobility is enhanced by benefit preservation is one of the justifications for tax incentives provided retirement plans. Several variables were considered in addition to the use or nonuse of reciprocity agreements; however, none of the variables were found to be significantly related to the turnover rate for vested plan participants in multiemployer plans. The primary conclusion of the research was that the hypothesis that benefit preservation through the use of reciprocity agreements in multiemployer plans is ineffective in increasing turnover for vested plan participants could not be rejected.

Cette thèse soutient que les politiques de migrations temporaires entravent la mobilité de l'individu, à partir du cas des migrants indiens dans la région du golfe persique. La pratique et le droit international définissent la mobilité comme le droit à la « liberté de mouvement » sans dispositions supplémentaires pour faciliter le choix de s’établir, permettant aux Etats de pratiquer ces politiques de convenance. Ce travail interdisciplinaire qui privilégie l’angle sociologique interroge les implications politiques et le droit international. Il montre que le non-respect prolongé des droits des migrants, surtout par les pays d’accueil, produit des conditions et des résultats restrictifs pour tous les acteurs- des indicateurs montrent l’exclusion systématique du migrant dans la société d’accueil. Cinq chapitres présentent empiriquement le « migrant » dans le golfe qui expérimente la vulnérabilité à différentes échelles : entrepreneurs, marchands-patriarches, travailleurs en col blanc, travailleurs en col bleu, et les femmes migrantes. La politique de migration temporaire des six Etats du Conseil de coopération du Golfe (GCC)- Arabie Saoudite, Oman, Émirats Arabes Unis, Qatar, Bahreïn et Koweït- constitue un exemple heuristique. Sans être un cas unique, il montre une exclusion plus sévère en raison de la nature conservatrice de ces monarchies et de la place de l’Islam comme religion d’Etat. Les politiques de migrations circulaires sont populaires aujourd’hui et les Etats en profitent à leur convenance en privilégiant la flexibilité et la non-intégration pour éviter les responsabilités vis-à-vis des migrants. Le migrant temporaire est donc, le travailleur précaire dans le marché mondial du travail. Le statut d’incertitude structurelle est aussi un des principaux éléments qui séparent « l’Indien du golfe » du reste des Indiens non-résidents (NRI)
The thesis highlights the evidence in the Arab-Gulf region with the Indian migrants to argue that the temporary migration policies hinder the individual’s mobility. International practice and law articulate mobility narrowly as merely the right to “freedom of movement” without also provision to facilitate the choice to settle, which allows states to perpetuate such expedient policies. The work is an inter-disciplinary approach, with mainly a sociological lens and interrogates the implications for policy and international law. It shows that mainly the receiving states’ prolonged non-respect of the migrant’s rights using the “temporary” frame produces limiting conditions and outcomes for all the actors- selected indicators show the systematic exclusion of the migrant in the host society. Five chapters empirically present the “guest worker” in the Gulf who experiences vulnerability at different levels: entrepreneur, trader-patriarch, white-collar worker, blue-collar worker and female migrant. The guest-worker policy practice of the six oil-rich Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries- Saudi Arabia, Oman, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait- is a heuristic example. The GCC region is not a unique case although it might show more severe exclusion, due to the conservative regimes as monarchies and following Islam as the state-religion. Circular migration policies are popular today and states manifest expediency by privileging flexibility and non-integration to evade responsibility for the migrant. The guest-worker is hence, the precarious worker in the global labour market. The structural uncertainty is a factor that mainly also separates the “Gulf-Indian” from the larger non-resident Indian (NRI) population elsewhere

Cette thèse étudie les décisions de localisation des entreprises et des travailleurs, ainsi que la manière dont celles-ci interagissent avec les caractéristiques locales des marchés du travail. Le premier chapitre se concentre sur les entreprises et s’intéresse à un nouveau mécanisme qui les incite à s’implanter dans les villes les plus denses : le rôle de la volatilité de la demande et de son interaction avec la productivité des entreprises. Ce processus tient à des conditions d’embauche plus fluides qui attirent les entreprises productives pouvant plus rapidement réduire ou augmenter leurs effectifs dans les villes les plus densément peuplées. Le deuxième chapitre s’intéresse aux choix de localisation des travailleurs et à la manière dont les coûts de mobilité, en particulier les frictions informationnelles, affectent les migrations régionales. Cela permet de mettre en lumière les mécanismes à l’origine du biais migratoire lié aux compétences, à savoir la régularité empirique selon laquelle les travailleurs hautement qualifiés sont significativement plus mobiles que les travailleurs peu qualifiés. Le troisième chapitre porte sur l’interaction des politiques de logement abordable avec les incitations à participer au marché du travail
This thesis studies spatial location decisions of firms and workers, and how these interact with local labor market characteristics. The first chapter focuses on firms and explores a novel mechanism that incentivizes firms to locate in denser cities: the role of volatile demand and its interaction with firm productivity. This channel arises since faster hiring conditions in thicker labor markets attract productive firms that can more swiftly downsize or expand in denser cities. The second chapter explores the location decisions of workers and how regional migration is affected by mobility costs, in particular information frictions. This helps shed light on the mechanisms driving skill-biased migration, namely the empirical regularity that high-skilled workers are substantially more mobile than low-skilled workers. The third chapter studies the interaction of affordable housing policies with incentives for labor market participation. A quasi-natural experimental setting enables to analyze a large public housing privatization event in the city of Copenhagen directed towards low-income households, and to compare the impact of subsidized home purchase versus subsidized rental on long-run labor market outcomes

This study challenges the traditions of the sociology of work and industrial relations by taking into consideration a new emergent category of workers: the Independent Professionals (IPros). Recent data (Labour Statistics) provide some hints on the relevance of the phenomenon: self-employed workers in advanced services (finance, counselling, producing-distributing information, auditing and so on) have increased their share in employment in most countries. As a recent survey (Edelman Berland 2014) pointed out, 53 million Americans are doing freelance work (53 percent of the entire workforce) Despite these figures, the phenomenon is still overlooked by the academic literature. The aim is to provide a first description of this phenomenon not only from a mere labour perspective, but considering spatial practices and lifestyles too. Indeed labour studies and economic sociology should not avoid considering space and time as two main dimensions shaping their object of study: workers are not abstract entities, they are fully part of the material environment they move in. Labour markets, Welfare regimes, and spatial processes play together. Mobility-related literature traditionally identifies two different forms of moving to get a job: mobility of less skilled people for whom becoming mobile is the only way to get a job, and mobility of highly qualified people, looking for career opportunities. What is missing in this binary analysis is a new intermediate workforce, the self-employed independent professionals (Ipros) who often experience long distance interregional commuting patterns. Among them there are young high-skilled people with low income who are likely to undergo phenomena of spatial exclusion at the regional level. Where do they live? Where do they work? What are the explaining micro and macro variables? These questions will be discussed in the contribution which has firstly a descriptive and investigative aim. The method of study is based on quantitative analysis mainly performed on web survey data, due to the lack of available offical data sources in Italy. Specifically we provide a detailed description of survey design and data collection process, with a focus on methodological strategies applied for data cleaning, coding and editing in order to better highlight first descriptive results related to research questions. GIS (Geographical Information System) tools have been applied to survey data in order to provide a full extensive spatial description of social phenomena investigated: the core analysis is based on GIS and spatial statistics techniques by using data collected at micro and macro levels.

Suite à la globalisation des affaires et aux multiples changements démographiques, de plus en plus de professionnels vont travailler à l’étranger de leur propre initiative ou encore, pour réaliser un mandat au sein d’une filiale de leur entreprise localisée à l’étranger. L’objectif de cette recherche consiste à étudier le bien-être des travailleurs à l’international en s’appuyant sur deux courants théoriques, celui du bien-être psychologique et du bien-être subjectif. Le bien-être subjectif se réfère à l’évaluation que font les personnes des conditions et des caractéristiques de l’environnement. Le bien-être psychologique fait référence à l’ampleur avec laquelle la personne se sent bien avec elle-même et à la cohérence de son projet de vie avec ses valeurs et ses objectifs de vie. Tenant compte du fait qu’un travail à l’étranger affecte tout autant les vies professionnelle, personnelle et souvent de couple et familiale, cette étude analyse les incidences du conflit et de l’enrichissement travail-famille sur le bien-être des travailleurs en mobilité à l’international. Notre recherche permet aussi d’explorer comment l’articulation travail-famille (tant par les perceptions de conflit que d’enrichissement) des TMI peut être expliquée par trois grands déterminants: le soutien social, l’autoévaluation de soi et l’intelligence culturelle des TMI. L’étude a été menée auprès de 284 travailleurs en mobilité à l’international vivant et travaillant dans différents pays. Au terme de multiples analyses, nos résultats confirment l’importance pour les TMI de ne pas ressentir de conflit travail-famille, mais de percevoir de l’enrichissement travail-famille pour ressentir plus de bien-être. Nos résultats démontrent que le conflit travail-famille est lié négativement aux deux types de bien-être évalués, alors que l’enrichissement travail-famille est seulement lié au bien-être subjectif. Nos résultats confirment aussi les liens négatifs entre d’une part, le soutien offert par l’organisation et la famille et le sentiment d’autoévaluation de soi et d’autre part, sur le conflit travail-famille que ressentent les TMI. Il apparaît aussi que le soutien offert par les collègues a un effet positif sur le sentiment d’enrichissement travail-famille exprimé par les TMI. Cette thèse conclue sur les implications de ses résultats pour la recherche et la pratique. Pour finir, les limites et les perspectives de la recherche future sont exposées
As a result of the globalization of business and the many demographic changes, more and more professionals are working abroad on their own initiative or, to achieve a mandate within a branch of their company located abroad. The objective of this research is to study the concept of the foreign workers well-being. We associated this concept with two theoretical currents refereeing to the subjective well-being and the psychological well-being. The subjective well-being refers to the assessment made by the workers about the conditions and characteristics of the environment. The psychological well-being refers to the extent to which the individual feels good with himself and the consistency of his life project with its values and life goals. Taking into account that working in a foreign context can affect both the professional and personal lives of the individual, often affecting the couple and family, in this study we aim to examine the impacts of work-family conflict and enrichment experienced by workers (that are) in international mobility. Our research also allows us to explore how the work-family articulation (both by perceptions of conflict and enrichment) of workers in international mobility can be explained by three major determinants: social support, self-esteem and cultural intelligence. The study was conducted among 284 workers in international mobility that was living and working in different countries. After multiple analyzes, our results confirm the importance for these workers in international mobility to feel no work-family conflict, but to perceive work-family enrichment in order to experience more well-being. Moreover, our results show that work-family conflict is negatively related to both types of well-being assessed, while the work-family enrichment is only related to subjective well-being. Our results also highlight the negative links between on the one hand, the support offered by the organization and the family with the feeling of self-esteem and on the other, with work-family conflict experienced by workers in international mobility. It also appears that support from co-workers has a positive effect on work-family enrichment experienced and expressed by workers in international mobility. This thesis concludes on the implications of its results for research and practice. Finally, limitations and vision statement for the future research are explained

Få studier har undersökt hur mobila arbetsprocesser kan integreras i verksamheter ur ett verksamhetsorienterat perspektiv, och bland organisationer råder brist på förståelse för, och långsiktiga strategier inom, företagsintern mobilitet. Denna studie undersöker hur en organisation kan förbereda sig inför förändring mot ett mobilare arbetsliv. För att besvara detta utfördes en litteraturstudie och en fallstudie bestående av dokumentstudier och intervjuer hos en organisation med särskilt utformad metodik inom området. Mognadsgraden kan utifrån resultaten anses relativt låg, och arbetet behöver lägga vikt på skapandet av förståelse för mobilitet och dess innebörd, där utmaningarna återfinns i hantering av förhållningssätt, organisationskultur, och ledarskap. Mobilitetsrelaterade behov var av både uppgiftsorienterad och social art, där olika tekniska lösningar föreslogs kunna bevara band mellan individer och organisation.  Det finns behov av mer longitudinella studier eftersom de signifikanta förändringarna antyddes ske över längre tid. En viktig del av kunskapsutvecklingen inom området handlar också om att lära från andras exempel, där denna studie utgör ett bidrag.
Few studies have examined how mobile work processes can be integrated into organizations from a business-oriented perspective, and among organizations there’s a lack of long-term strategies, and understanding, for internal business mobility. This study examines how an organization can prepare itself for change towards a mobile work life. In order to do this a literature review and case study involving document studies and interviews at an organization with specifically developed methodologies were conducted. The results showed that the state of maturity is still relatively low, and there is a need to focus on developing a more thorough understanding of mobility, where challenges involve handling attitudes, organizational culture and leadership. Mobility-related needs involve task-oriented and social aspects, where different technological solutions were suggested to maintain the connections between individuals and the organization. There is also a need for more longitudinal studies due to the results showing how the significant changes occur over a longer period of time. An important part of the development of knowledge concerning mobility also involves learning from others’ examples, where this study is a contribution.

Neste texto, procuramos revelar a face oculta do agrohidronegócio canavieiro sob o recorte analítico do EDR de Araçatuba, localizado na região noroeste do estado de São Paulo, enfatizando, o momento atual de reestruturação produtiva, técnica e do trabalho no setor, que vem impondo o flagelo do desemprego a milhares de trabalhadores com a mecanização do corte de cana-de-açúcar e, subjugando aos que permanecem empregados a exorbitante intensificação do trabalho. De modo geral, o principal objetivo dessa pesquisa foi revelar as ações e estratégias do agrohidronegócio canavieiro, sob o prisma da mobilidade territorial do trabalho no EDR de Araçatuba, com o propósito de entender as relações e os impactos sobre as condições de vida e trabalho dos trabalhadores migrantes no corte de cana-de-açúcar. Como queremos demonstrar, o agrohidronegócio canavieiro está encimado no discurso do desenvolvimento, da geração de emprego e renda para os trabalhadores, entretanto seus desdobramentos concretos não atentam para melhoria de vida das populações mais pobres, e nem de longe este é seu objetivo, portanto ao invés de ser a “salvação da lavoura” brasileira, este modelo de produção destrutiva, organizada sob os ditames do sistema do capital, encontra-se completamente tolhido em sentido para os trabalhadores. Nestes termos, o sistema do capital utiliza como trunfo territorial, o processo de mobilidade territorial do trabalho, tendo em vista fazer uso da força de trabalho nos territórios mais rentáveis ao capital. Portanto, é possível dizer, que ao invés de uma decisão livre, o direito de migrar se converte em obrigação compulsória pela sobrevivência: “ir e vir”, longe de ser um ato de liberdade, acaba sendo, a revelação do desespero, de quem se vê pressionado pela necessidade de sobreviver. Ademais, toda apologia do sistema, ao direito à liberdade espacial, desmorona-se e se mostra insustentável teoricamente, pois a liberdade espacial, sob o jugo da lógica do capital é, apenas uma noção fantasiosa, um mero termo do discurso burguês. A grande maioria da população, especialmente os setores condenados à exclusão social, deixam suas terras e suas famílias não por um ato livre, mas por motivos de vida ou morte. Está em jogo a própria sobrevivência. Daí nossa insistência em que ao direito de ir e vir corresponde o direito de “ficar” e poder vivenciar seus territórios e escolhas de maneira digna.
In this paper, we aim to reveal the hidden face of sugarcane agrohydrobusiness under the analytical view of the EDR of Araçatuba, located in the northwest of São Paulo state, emphasizing the current moment of workforce, technical and productive restructuration in this sector, which has been imposing the unemployment plague to millions of workers due to the mechanization of sugarcane cutting and subjugating the ones remaining employed to excessive intensification of work. In general, the aim of this research was to reveal the actions and strategies of the sugarcane agrohydrobusiness from the point of view of territorial mobility at the EDR of Araçatuba, intending to understand the relations and impacts over the life and work conditions of migrant workers in sugarcane cutting. As we intend to prove, the sugarcane agrohydrobusiness is supported by the discourse of development, job and income creation to workers, even though, its concrete deployments do not focus on the improvement of life to poorer populations, and it is far beyond its objective, thus, instead of being the “salvation of plantation “to Brazil, this destructive production mode, organized under the dictates of the Capital System is found hindered in sense to workers. This way, the capital system uses as territorial trump, the territorial mobility process, aiming to use the workforce in the most profitable territories to the capital. Thus, it’s possible to state that, instead of a free decision, the right to migrate becomes a compulsory obligation in order to survive: “going” and “coming”, it is far from being a free action, it ends up being the despair revelation from people who find themselves pressured for the need to survive. In addition, all the apology of the system to the right of spatial mobility collapses and becomes theoretically impossible, once the spatial mobility, under the rational capital view, is just an imaginative, a mere term of bourgeois discourse. The largest part of population, especially the sector condemned to social exclusion, leaves the lands and families not as a free action but as a life or death issue. Survival is at check. That is the reason of our insistence about the right of coming and going regards to the right of “remain” and experience the territories and choices in a dignified way.

Three sequential studies investigate the professional practice of the rehabilitation worker in delivering Orientation and Mobility (O&M) training to older visually impaired people. The first study explored through in-depth, face-to-face interviews (n=17) professionals’ views of the relevance of O&M training to visually impaired people. Analysis of the findings suggested that the prevocational training of the rehabilitation worker equipped them with techniques that in the majority of cases required substantial adaptation to meet the needs of their predominant client group (older people). Emerging evidence of a gap between rehabilitation worker training and their practice prompted a second study to establish expert views of what constituted good practice in O&M with older people. Utilising a Delphi method, an expert panel (n=5) produced detailed descriptions of the elements of good practice (family; mobility aids; public transport; assessment; orientation; sighted guide; the individual; road crossing; the public; the senses) that they considered to be essential for effective O&M intervention with older people. This framework provided the structure for the third study which explored – through telephone interviews (n=29) with practising rehabilitation workers – how their experience of practice aligns with the expert view of ‘good practice’. A grounded analysis of the data uncovered how the rehabilitation worker adopts a common sense, pragmatic approach to the application of their practice. Whilst this enables them to draw directly from the expertise of their client, there is a lack of the underpinning knowledge they require to be confident that this practice is effective. Appreciating that the practising rehabilitation worker develops skills and abilities in order to deliver O&M that meets the needs of older visually impaired people, recommendations are made for the development of their pre- and post-vocational training.

Dans le contexte d'incertitude de nos sociétés contemporaines, les questions d'orientation renvoient de plus en plus à celles du « sens » (Bernaud, 2014). La nature même des carrières se trouve modifiée, caractérisée par de nombreux changements et ruptures (Savickas et Pouyaud, in press). Si la conceptualisation et la mesure du sens du travail font l'objet d'une littérature scientifique croissante, peu d'études ont été conduites sur ses relations avec des événements de vie. L'objectif de la thèse est d'analyser les relations réciproques entre le sens du travail et la mobilité professionnelle. La première partie de nos résultats est consacrée à l'étude de validité d'une nouvelle échelle du sens du travail auprès de salariés français, l'Inventaire du Sens du Travail. La seconde partie des résultats montre globalement l'existence de liens significatifs entre le sens du travail et la mobilité professionnelle, à travers trois études distinctes. Une première étude qualitative exploratoire vise, à partir d'entretiens semi-directifs d'agents administratifs, à mieux comprendre la manière dont l'individu construit du sens suite à une mobilité. Dans le cadre d'une deuxième étude quantitative menée auprès de 501 agents d'universités françaises, les analyses de régression hiérarchique indiquent que la personnalité et les indicateurs subjectifs de la mobilité professionnelle expliquent respectivement 17% et 21% de la variance du sens du travail. Ces résultats soulignent plus particulièrement l'importance de la perception qu'a l'individu de son expérience de mobilité professionnelle dans la compréhension du sens du travail. Une troisième étude quantitative auprès d'un échantillon de 336 salariés issus d'horizons professionnels diversifiés, permet de montrer l'influence du sens du travail sur les intentions de quitter son emploi et/ou sa structure, de même que le rôle de médiateur du sens du travail entre certains facteurs d'insatisfaction professionnelle et ces mêmes intentions de quitter. A partir de nos résultats et de l'analyse de la littérature, nous proposons un modèle dynamique du sens du travail ainsi que le modèle d'une mobilité dite « signifiante », c'est-à-dire en interaction réciproque avec le sens du travail
In the context of uncertainty in our contemporary society, guidance issues relate more to those of the "meaning" (Bernaud, 2014). The nature of careers is modified, characterized by many changes and ruptures (Savickas and Pouyaud, in press). Despite the conceptualization and the measurement of the meaning of work being the subject of a growing scientific literature, little research has been conducted on its relationship with life events. This thesis aims to analyze the relationships between the meaning of work and career changes. The first part of our results is devoted to the validation of a psychometric instrument among French workers for assessing meaning of work (IST – Inventaire du Sens du Travail). The second part of overall results shows significant reciprocal links between the meaning of work and career changes, through three separate studies. An initial exploratory qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews with administrative staff, aims to better understand how the individual constructs meaning after an employment change. In the framework of a second quantitative study conducted with 501 administrative staff working in French universities, hierarchical regression analyzes indicate that personality and subjective indicators of professional mobility explain respectively 17% and 21% of the variance of the meaning of work. These results specifically highlight the importance of the individual's perception of the experienced career change in the understanding of the meaning of work. A third quantitative study with a sample of 336 employees working in diversified professional fields, shows the influence of the meaning of work on withdrawal intentions, as well as the role of mediator of the meaning of work between job dissatisfaction factors and the withdrawal intentions. Based on our literature review and results, we propose a dynamic model of the meaning of work as well as a model of a “meaningful” career change, that is to say, in reciprocal interaction with the meaning of work

El primer capítulo investiga el papel de la indemnización por despido en las decisiones de los trabajadores de abandonar voluntariamente su empresa. Utilizando la reforma laboral de 2012 en España, que modificó la legislación sobre la protección del empleo, el análisis muestra que la reducción en la indemnización de despido consecuencia de la reforma provocó que trabajadores con expectativas de que pueden ser despedidos en un futuro próximo están más dispuestos a abandonar la empresa de forma voluntaria. El segundo capítulo se centra en el papel de las relaciones sociales en forma de antiguos compañeros de trabajo en el mercado laboral. Los resultados indican que las empresas tienden a contratar con mayor probabilidad trabajadores que tienen algún excompañero de trabajo en la empresa, y que estos contactos mejoran las características de los puestos de trabajo obtenidos en relación aquellos trabajadores contratados que no tienen ningún contacto en la empresa. El último capítulo estudia diferencias en el ajuste a lo largo del ciclo económico entre empresas convencionales y empresas cuyos propietarios son sus trabajadores. This doctoral thesis studies how labor market institutions, social contacts, and firm-ownership schemes determine workers and firms job mobility decisions. The first chapter investigates the effect of severance pay on workers' voluntary mobility out of the firm. The analysis exploits a major labor market reform of the employment protection legislation in Spain in 2012 to show that a decrease in mobility costs due to a reduction in severance pay induced by the reform made workers who may expect to be displaced in the near future more likely to voluntarily leave their employer. The second chapter adds to the empirical literature on the role of social contacts on the labor market. The findings in this chapter indicate that employers are more likely to hire workers who have a connection in the firm through a former coworker, and that having a connection in the hiring firm improves re-employment outcomes of workers relative to non-connected workers. The last chapter studies differences between conventional and worker-owned firms in their adjustment to the business cycle. It documents that both types of firms respond to changing macroeconomic conditions by adjusting employment, hours of work, and wages. However, worker-owned firms exhibit greater employment resilience than conventional enterprises. Hours of work and wages, instead, adjust to a similar extent across the two types of firms.

Based on a 6-year, learn and earn curriculum, the authors report on a year-old project that assists licensed practical nurses (LPNs) to obtain a baccalaureate degree in nursing (BSN). Partnerships with 4 area healthcare agencies employing LPNs were developed to support students with full or partial tuition reimbursement and work schedules to accommodate classes. Key university staff in the offices of admissions, financial aid, adult programs and services, and nursing advisement are assigned to this student group to provide individualized assistance. The authors discuss unique components of the project including regularly scheduled role transition seminars, faculty mentors, BSN and nurse practitioner clinical mentors, and clinical experiences in nurse-managed clinics.

Les questions de mobilité et de logement sont aujourd'hui au centre des enjeux du développement urbain. La hausse du taux de motorisation, de la pression sur le marché du logement, poussent à une déstructuration des liens de proximité et génèrent aujourd'hui une saturation du système de transport. De cette difficulté à se déplacer naissent des tensions (augmentation du temps de trajet, risque de retard, etc.). L'objectif de cette thèse est alors d'étudier le poids de ces tensions dans la décision de déménager. Une enquête a été réalisée auprès de 500 résidants actifs luxembourgeois ayant déménagé sans changer de lieu de travail. Les résultats montrent que certains individus se sont bien rapprochés de leur lieu de travail dans le but de réduire ces tensions. Cette recherche a donc permis de mettre en évidence des liens de conjonction entre la mobilité quotidienne et résidentielle et d'aboutir à une meilleure compréhension du système de la mobilité spatiale locale des individus.

Information Technology is advancing at a frightening pace. Cloud computing and its subset, Software as a Service (SaaS), are rapidly challenging traditional thinking for enterprise-level application and infrastructure provision. The project-centric nature of the construction industry provides an environment where the utilisation of SaaS is commercially appropriate, given its ability to provide rapid set-up and predictable costs at the outset. Using project extranets, the construction industry has been - unusually for it as an industry sector - early-adopters of this cloud computing model. However, findings from the research highlight that there is a gap in the information and documents that pass from the construction phase into the operational phase of a building. This research considers examples of the SaaS IT model and how it has been used within a construction and facilities management industry context. A prototype system was developed to address the requirements of facilities management work order logging and tracking process. These requirements were gathered during detailed case studies of organisations within both the construction and facilities management sectors with a view to continue the use of building-specific information through its full life-cycle. The thesis includes a summary of the lessons learnt through system implementation within the construction-contracting organisation Taylor Woodrow, and it concludes with an IT strategy proposal that was developed based on a cloud computing model.

The worsening income disparity in Singapore is threatening the legitimacy of the Developmental State. In the attempt to address the widening income gap, the government has prescribed "productivity enhancement and skills upgrading" as the primary means towards building an inclusive society. Against this backdrop, this case study examined the upward mobility of low-wage workers in the unarmed private security sector by interrogating the interactions among the state, employers, and workers. The study drew upon Bourdieu's Praxeological analysis to investigate the causal mechanism underlying their actions and rationale and the reasons embedded in their reciprocal relationships in their interpretation and facilitation of upward mobility of low-wage workers. The findings revealed the existence of institutional and circumstantial conditions that have impeded the upward mobility of lowwage employees in the security sector. These conditions reflect a deep set of culturally- and historically-constructed dispositions of a developmental state such as economic primacy, pro-business mindset and self-reliance. The very same attitudinal, institutional, and circumstantial factors that have contributed to Singapore's economic success have also led to the immobility of low-wage security workers. As shown in this study, the uncovering of the visible and the invisible forces that have impeded the upward mobility of low-wage workers highlights the need to explain the hidden predispositions embedded within the actors' interactions. Finally, the thesis argues that an multi-disciplinary macro-mesomicro integrated approach of analysing the relational positioning of actors can enhance the Praxeological analysis by providing a balanced, yet critical, evaluation of a socio-economic phenomenon leading to a practical course of actions to improve current practices.

This thesis will argue that high levels of internal migration in Gilded Age America undermined the stability and growth of trade unions and labour-based parties. Most of the traditional ‘American Exceptionalist’ arguments which asserted a lack of class consciousness will be challenged. Significant weight will be given to the racial, ethnic, and gender divisions within the American working class as a source of relative organizational weakness. As archival sources reveal, however, despite their divisions, workers of all ethnic and racial groups drawn into wage-labour in the Gilded Age often displayed high levels of class consciousness and political radicalism through their actions, organizations, and hundreds of weekly labour papers. They also showed an awareness of the problems of frequent migration or ‘tramping’ in building stable organizations. Driven by the tumultuous conditions of uneven industrialization, millions of people migrated from state-to-state, country-to-city, and city-to-city at rates far higher than in Europe. A detailed analysis of the statistics on migration, work-related travelling, and union membership trends shows that this created a high level of membership turnover in the major organizations of the day—the American Federation of Labour and the Knights of Labour. Confronted in the 1880s with the highest level of migration in the period, the Knights of Labour saw rapid growth turn into continuous decline. The more stable craft unions also saw significant membership loss to migration through an ineffective travelling card system. The organizational weakness that resulted undermined efforts by American workers to build independent labour-based parties in the 1880s and 1890s. ‘Pure-and-simple’ unionism would triumph by the end of the century despite the existence of a significant socialist minority in organized labour.

Evidence-based recommendations for interventions to reduce fall risk in older adults with visual impairment are lacking. Adapted tango dance (Tango) and a balance and mobility program (FallProof) have improved mobility, balance, and quality of life (QOL) in individuals with movement impairment. This study compared the efficacy of Tango and FallProof for 32 individuals with visual impairment (age: M = 79.3, SD =11 [51–95 years]). Participants were assigned to Tango or FallProof to complete twenty, 90-min lessons within 12 weeks. Participants underwent assessment of balance, dual-tasking, endurance, gait, and vision-related QOL. The balance reactions of participants in both groups improved (p < .001). Endurance, cognitive dual-tasking, and vision-related QOL may have improved more for Tango than FallProof. Group differences and gains were maintained across time. Both programs could be effective options for motor rehabilitation for older adults with visual impairment because they may improve mobility and QOL while reducing fall risk.

The interweaving of China's "reform and opening-up" policy of 1978 with globalisation has shifted the landscape of Chinese economic geographies (CEGs). With influential economic, social, and ideological functions, state-owned enterprises (SOEs) vividly illustrate the multiple political economic, geographic, and socio-cultural dimensions of these changes. Regions with concentrations of SOEs have been particularly impacted. This includes North East (NE) China, which historically held the highest proportion of employment in SOEs and has witnessed the closure of many SOEs and regional decline. Explanations of these changes emphasise the structural and institutional mechanisms of reform under globalisation. I argue this extensive literature regards workers as passive factors of production and limits discussions of space and time. Drawing on scholarship on Global Production Networks (GPNs) and Assemblages, I propose a new conceptual framework that positions the everyday life of each worker at the heart of SOE transformation. My central research question is: "how are workers" everyday lives implicated in SOE transformation?" I explore this by re-reading transformation as the coming together of reform under globalisation with the lived experiences, practices, and affective encounters of workers' everyday lives. The novelty of this framework leads me to sketch three general research propositions rather than setting formal hypotheses. I address the research question and demonstrate my framework by using qualitative research methods and building grounded theory. To explore the differentiated ways in which SOEs are transforming, I studied 13 SOEs from three major cities of NE (Harbin, Changchun, and Shenyang). A three-phase research design was deployed. I completed 62 individual and 8 group interviews. To increase the reliability and replicability of the results, I triangulated data by considering in-depth interviews, public policy documents, internet forums, movies and magazines, and on-site field observation. The empirical findings are presented in three chapters which depict, respectively, the lived experiences, practices, and affective encounters of everyday life. First, I explore workers' lived experiences of social relations in the context of reform and their link to specific spatial arrangements. I characterise interdependent social relations and spatial arrangements constitute the socio-spatial formations. The next chapter further explores workers' mobile and immobile practices and the changing meanings of time and space of SOE socio-spatial formation. Third, I describe how encounters and affects give rise to intensity of feelings which reproduces practice and impacts the SOE socio-spatial formation. In a nutshell, understanding SOEs as socio-spatial formations implies that transformation is not "meted out" by a state or abstract market force but an "always already present"process of mutual constitution of lived experiences, practices, and affective encounters in everyday life. Overall, my thesis expands economic geographic knowledge by highlighting the ongoing and processual nature of space and time and, more specifically, by valorising worker agency. I reflect on implications for CEG to combine with cultural and social geographies. I conclude by calling for an ontological shift of focusing on the emergence and contingency of CEGs.

Cette thèse explore la dimension géographique des disparités entre les sexes dans le marché du travail. Les questions étudiées incluent la variation de la prime salariale urbaine entre les sexes (chapitre deux), l'exploration des différents mécanismes derrière les effets importants de la localisation géographique sur les gains du marché du travail des femmes (chapitre trois), et de l'écart entre les sexes sur les rendements d'expérience urbains (chapitre quatre). Le deuxième chapitre entreprend une analyse transversale à l'aide de données françaises pour estimer la prime salariale urbaine et sa variation entre les sexes. Les résultats confirment l'existence d'une prime salariale urbaine nettement supérieure pour les femmes. Un doublement de la densité de l'emploi dans une zone donnée entraîne une réduction de 2,4 pourcent de l'écart salarial entre les sexes, une valeur qui augmente de 4 pourcent lorsqu'on exclut la catégorie professionnelle des ouvriers. Contrairement au reste des professions, l'effet de la densité favorise les hommes dans la catégorie des ouvriers. Le troisième chapitre cherche à trouver les mécanismes à l'origine de l'effet importante de la localisation géographique sur les gains du marché du travail pour les femmes en employant l'approche par l'estimateur « within ». Les résultats suggèrent que la moitié de la prime salariale urbaine est attribuée sur la base d'un tri des travailleurs selon le type de compétences à travers des différentes zones. Cependant, en complément du tri de compétences, d'autres hétérogénéités individuelles contribuent également à l'excès de la prime salariale urbaine pour les femmes
This dissertation explores the geographical dimension of the gender gaps in the labor market. The investigated issues include the variation of urban wage premium across genders (chapter two), exploration of different mechanisms behind stronger location effects for females' labor market gains (chapter three), and the gender gap in the urban returns to experience (chapter four). The second chapter undertakes a cross-sectional analysis by using French data to estimate the urban wage premium and its variation across genders. The findings confirm the existence of an urban wage premium that is significantly higher for women. A twofold increase in employment density of an area results in a 2.4 percent reduction in the gender wage gap, which increases to 4 percent when we exclude manual workers occupational category. Contrary to the rest of the occupations, the density effect favors men in the manual workers category. The third chapter seeks to find the mechanisms behind the stronger location effects on labor market gains for women by employing the within estimate approach. Results suggest that half of the urban wage premium is contributed by the sorting of workers according to skill type across different areas. However, in addition to skill sorting other individual heterogeneities also contribute to the excess urban wage premium for females. Firm level agglomeration effects attribute a minor part to the excess urban wage premium for females. The left over premium is a result of pure urban effects (lower discrimination, better matching, urban amenities)

Au cœur des temporalités urbaines, les horaires de travail rythment les pulsations des activités et mobilités quotidiennes. C'est pourquoi nous interrogeons la possibilité d’échelonner les horaires d’embauche pour atténuer la saturation des transports à l’heure de pointe du matin. Les réponses habituellement privilégiées s’appuient sur des considérations d’ordre technique : c’est l’entreprise qui contraint les salariés à se déplacer au même moment. Une des solutions envisagées consiste alors à promouvoir les horaires de travail à la carte. Mais nos observations relativisent la pertinence de cette idée. En effet, en Île-de-France et pour les déplacements en transports collectifs, la flexibilisation des horaires de travail accentue la concentration temporelle des arrivées au bureau. Ce constat paradoxal demande de renverser la façon dont nous considérons généralement le phénomène de pointe. Avant de chercher à résoudre les problèmes de congestion en heure de pointe, il est nécessaire de comprendre les logiques d’action individuelles qui fondent un choix d’horaire de travail. Pour quelles raisons un salarié aux horaires flexibles arrive-t-il au travail en heure de pointe? Guidées par une approche compréhensive et centrée sur les temporalités du quotidien, nos investigations s’appuient sur les résultats d’un questionnaire (3202 répondants) et d’entretiens (29) réalisés auprès de cadres du pôle d’activité de la Plaine Saint-Denis. Afin de décrire les stratégies temporelles qui expliquent une arrivée au bureau en heure de pointe, nous établissons nos hypothèses de recherche selon trois dimensions :(I) Il subsiste toujours des contraintes de couplage (horaires d’école, de réunion) qui poussent les salariées flexibles à se rendre au travail durant la période de pointe. (II) Les salariés flexibles qui n’ont pas de contraintes de couplage préfèrent (loisir en fin d’après-midi, synchronisation avec les proches) arriver avant ou pendant l'heure de pointe. (III) Il existe des normes sociales d’horaires de travail (normes des salariés disciplinés et du cadre dévoué) qui canalisent les pratiques horaires en sanctionnant les arrivées trop tardives au bureau. La validation de ces hypothèses offre une lecture renouvelée de l’heure de pointe à l’ère de la flexibilité : l’individualisation du rapport au temps (de travail) ne conduit pas à la désynchronisation des agendas. Et finalement, c’est en dévoilant les entrelacs organiques de la synchronisation au travail que la thèse ouvre des pistes opérationnelles pour désaturer les transports aux heures de pointe
At the core of city life, work hours set the rhythm of daily activities and movement. We are therefore investigating the possibility of staggering the start of the work day in order to reduce congestion at morning rush hour. Suggestions typically put forward are based on considerations of a tactical nature: it is companies’ schedules which dictate that workers all commute at the same time. Thus, one proposed solution is to promote flexible work schedules. But our observations call this idea into question: in Île-de-France, as far as public transportation is concerned, flexible work scheduling actually magnifies the number of commuters who arrive at work during rush hour. This paradoxical observation makes it necessary to change the way we usually think of the rush hour phenomenon. Before trying to solve peak congestions problems, we need to understand the underlying reasons on which an individual’s work schedule choices are based. Why does a worker with flexible work hours commute during rush hour? Our research adopts a comprehensive approach and focuses on daily scheduling demands. It relies on the results of a survey (3202 respondents) and interviews (29). Respondents and interviewees are executives from the Plaine Saint-Denis area. To describe temporal strategies that explain voluntary commuting during peak hours, we organize our hypotheses along three dimensions :(I) There remain coupling constraints (school hours, meeting hours) which force workers with flexible hours to go to work during peak hours. (II) Workers with flexible hours and fewer coupling constraints prefer (late afternoon leisure, activities with family and friends) to arrive before or during the rush hour. (III) There are social norms regarding work hours (ideal of the disciplined worker or the dedicated executive) that limit flexibility by frowning on those who arrive overly late at the office. Confirmation of these hypotheses opens the way to a renewed reading of the rush hour phenomenon in the age of flexibility: individualized (work) hours do not result in desynchronized (work) schedules. In conclusion, it is by revealing the organic intricacy of work synchronisation that our thesis generates operational recommendations for reducing congestion at peak hours

Elle est la solution aux carences de compétences et de mains d’œuvres, elle constitue un facteur de transfert et d’acquisition du savoir-faire et de technologie pour les États de même que pour les travailleurs. Cependant, la mobilité internationale des travailleurs révèle un cadre juridique complexe, puisque d’un côté elle est liée à certains droits fondamentaux qui impliquent forcément des conséquences, et d’un autre côté l’usage inapproprié de ses qualifiants prête à la confusion entre les différentes formes de cette mobilité. Toutefois, sa mise en œuvre ne reste pas sans conséquences puisqu’elle implique des effets mitigés pour les trois principaux acteurs : les États, les entreprises et les travailleurs. The international mobility of workers is seen as a states development factor, whether it is their home or host. It is an answer to skills deficiencies and labor work. It is an acquisition and transfer factor of knowledge and technology for States and their workforce.However, international mobility reveals a complex legal framework, since on the one hand, it is linked a certain fundamental rights witch necessarily involve consequences, and on the other hand, inappropriate uses of his qualifying it leads to confusion between the different forms of mobility. Mobility and Pathways to Autonomy of Women: A study of informal workers in fisheries sector in Kerala, India Mobility defined as the freedom and ability to move has intrinsic and instrumental values in promoting human development. Paid work which involves mobility associated with work can be a ‘capability-enhancing’ experience when such mobility improves opportunities and enhances freedoms. However, the existing studies have neither examined nor measured mobility with its multiple domains for women. My thesis fills this gap in research by exploring the multiple domains of gendered mobility by measuring mobility as a single construct and analysing whether mobility is a ‘capability’ for women workers which improves autonomy and agency. It is inter-disciplinary as it is situated at the confluence of development studies, human geography and sociological disciplines. The following features of the thesis make it unique in the development studies discipline. First, the contextual setting is unique as it is based in Kerala, which is a socially progressive state in India. The thesis unearths the underlying structural constraints in the Kerala model of social development for transformation of women workers under patriarchy. It is a comparative study which examines the household autonomy and agency of two types of informal women workers in the post-harvest fisheries, namely ‘peeling workers’ linked to production chains and ‘fish vendors’ who are self-employed. Second, the capability approach provides the theoretical framework for the analysis of mobility of women as capability and it introduces a new concept of ‘transformational mobility’. By examining mobility using the Rasch Rating Scale Model (RSM) for the first time in development studies, the thesis operationalises capability measurement by introducing the measurement scale of mobility of women workers which empirically delineates the multiple domains of mobility based on the constraints faced by women. Third, the mixed methods research design using survey data and qualitative interviews of women workers provide better insight and contextual understanding of women’s work. An innovative method, namely, the Crisp set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (CsQCA), explores the causal mechanisms that bring about ‘transformational mobility’ in women workers. The thesis empirically proves the significance of social and human capital factors like caste, low education of spouse and marital status along with the underlying patriarchal structures that determine pathways to transformational mobility and decision making of women. Lastly, the qualitative analysis using classic grounded theory contributes to the emergence of substantive theories for women workers which reflect contrasting agentic behaviour of peeling workers and fish vendors in the context of Kerala. The lack of collective agency among peeling workers questions the claims of Kerala model of development in improving the agency of women. The findings confirm that work mobility associated with informal low paid work is not necessarily a capability for women in fisheries.

Industry growth and the reduction of available seasonal labour in New Zealand’s horticulture and viticulture industries led to a collaboration with the government in 2005, and the formation of a seasonal labour strategy for the future, the Recognised Seasonal Employer Scheme (RSE) was launched in 2007. The objectives of this policy were twofold: to fill labour gaps of the horticulture and viticulture industries and to promote economic development in Pacific Island states by prioritising workers from the region. Different actors have different aims, and different measure for success. In order for this scheme to be successful for the New Zealand government it needs to meet theses policy objectives of supplying reliable labour to the industries, and increasing economic development in the Pacific. For Pacific island states success depends on the continuity of the scheme, and the remittances that workers will send home to aid economic development. For the industries success comes from having a dependable and controllable labour force. Success for the workers in the scheme relies on them making as much money as possible during the season to meet their goals of financing family and community needs. In order to achieve these various successes workers are made unfree. Unfreedom means that the workers have no freedom in the labour market and are restricted to working for the grower stipulated in the employment contract. Conditions of employment contracts, visa regulations and informal pressures to be ‘good’ men both at work and in free time from the Vanuatu government, men’s home communities and industry participants all work to limit the men’s freedom, which is entrenched largely through threats of being sent home or blacklisted from the scheme. Workers are aware of the mechanisms used to control them and they do resist some of the conditions imposed, but only in a limited way that will not see them excluded from the scheme. Using the anthropological approach of participation observation this research was undertaken in the first season of the RSE scheme 2007/2008, where I lived and worked with 22 ni-Vanuatu migrant workers in Central Otago to gain knowledge of how, they and others in the industry experienced the RSE scheme.

My thesis deals with intra-EU migration, its motivation factors and then compares the advantages and disadvantages of migration. Free movement of workers is discussed in the next chapter as well as the key mobility drivers and its barriers. The thesis further deals with division of EU member states into receiving and sending countries. Future mobility intentions are analyzed in order to forecast the most probable moves in the future. In its last chapter it mentions labour mobility and ways how to measure it and then it analyses voluntary and forced mobility. In the following part labour mobility is compared to geographical mobility to see their practical implications. The eastern enlargement of the EU has brought some doubts about a massive inflow of labour migrants from the CEE countries to the old member states which has led to the introduction of transitional measures limiting free access to their labour markets. Therefore the main purpose of the thesis is to confirm or refuse the old member states' arguments that a potential migration from the new member states would threaten their labour markets.

This doctoral thesis investigates the role of place in the lives of multilocal and mobile creative knowledge workers, who live in different places and countries at the same moment. As such, this thesis connects mobility studies and research on creative industries. Using a set of qualitative interviews and mental map techniques, the lifeworlds of this specific group of people is reconstructed. As a central result the heuristic concept of 'plug&play places' is introduced. It helps to understand the process of standardization and configuration of places in individual geographies of the lifeworld and it might serve as an analytical tool also in other thematic contexts.
