This book examines whether or not the youth employment strategies practiced in the high efficiency and expanding economies of the United States and Germany can be adopted successfully in the Mediterranean countries of Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece and (southern) France, countries where youth face significant obstacles to employment. A distinguishing feature in the approach taken here is the importance placed on national culture, i.e., shared values and preferences with intergenerational sustainability that can have economic consequences. Like many other books on this subject the importance of the institutions and policies that underpin “free market capitalism” are discussed but an effort has been made to place these institutions and policies within a broader cultural and historical context. In the spirit of the pioneering work of Max Weber and the more recent contributions in the rapidly expanding sub-field of cultural economics, this book attempts to identify the elements of national value orientation that can facilitate or impede the adoption of new technologies, policies or institutional forms. It is the book’s contention, its overall thesis if you will, that a failure to correctly identify these value orientations will likely result in incomplete adoption and low levels of diffusion.

The emergence of this handbook on social justice represents a groundbreaking event in the history of social psychology. In this summary discussion, I outline significant limits to social justice work embedded in the empiricist tradition of inquiry and point to ways in which the current work transcends these limits. However, I also view the present endeavors as in a fledgling state. In the service of enriching and rendering these pursuits more effective, I discuss five domains in which tensions currently prevail and suggest directions for future undertakings. Challenges are discussed in terms of epistemological schisms, presumed ontologies, value pluralism, explanatory paradigms, and the limits of representationalism. A final invitation is made to shift from a mirroring orientation to research to world-making.

This chapter critically evaluates treatments for internalizing and externalizing disorders in ethnic minority youth based on empirically supported treatment criteria and the methodological robustness of the scientific evidence. There continues to be no well-established treatment for externalizing or internalizing disorders in ethnic minority youth. There continues to be no evidence that treatments are robust across cultures and subcultures, and there is a lack of attention to explanatory variables (e.g., acculturation, cultural orientation, values). In the meantime, an articulation for providers is suggested based on data about putative mediators of change and best practices for working in the contexts of cultural diversity. For researchers, the chapter articulates four avenues believed to be the core to advancing treatment science for ethnic minority youth.

In this book, the authors focus their attention on the role that culture, that collection of values, beliefs, attitudes, and preferences responsible for creating national identities, has played and continues to play on individuals’ decisions when they are in or about to enter the labor market. At a time when millennials face many employment challenges and Generation Z can be expected to encounter even more, a clearer understanding of the ways cultural transmission could facilitate or hinder productive and rewarding work would appear to be both useful and well-timed. The book’s title—Caught in the Cultural Preference Net: Three Generations of Employment Choices in Six Capitalist Democracies—conveys the authors’ aim to determine if work-related beliefs, attitudes, and preferences have remained stable across generations or if they have become pliant under changing economic conditions. And while millennials serve as the anchoring point for much of our discussion, they do not neglect the significance that their parents from Generation X (b. 1965–1982) and their baby boomer parents (b. 1945–1964) may have had on their socialization into the world of work. The book is organized around three lines of inquiry: (a) Do some national cultures possess value orientations that are more successful than others in promoting economic opportunity? (b) Does the transmission of these value orientations demonstrate persistence irrespective of economic conditions or are they simply the result of these conditions? (c) If a nation’s beliefs and attitudes do indeed impact opportunity, do they do so by influencing an individual’s preferences and behavioral intentions? The authors’ principal method for isolating the employment effects of cultural transmission is what is referred to as a stated preference experiment. They replicate this experiment in six countries—Germany, Sweden, Spain, Italy, India, and the United States—countries that have historically adopted significantly different forms of capitalism. They not only find some strong evidence for cultural stability across countries but also observe an erosion in this stability among millennials.

Much of contemporary philosophy, especially in the analytical tradition, regards aesthetics as of lesser significance than epistemology, ethics, metaphysics, and the philosophy of language. In Aesthetic Dimensions of Modern Philosophy Andrew Bowie, in contrast, explores the idea that art and aesthetics have crucial implications for those areas of philosophy. In the modern period, the growth of warranted scientific knowledge is accompanied both by heightened concern with epistemological scepticism and by a new philosophical attention to art and the beauty of nature. This suggests that modernity involves problems concerning how human beings make sense of the world that go beyond questions of knowledge, and are reflected in the arts. The relationship of art to philosophy is explored in Montaigne, Descartes, Hume, Kant, Schelling, the early German Romantics, and Hegel. The book then considers Cassirer’s and the hermeneutic tradition’s exploration of close links between meaning in language and in art. The work of Karl Polanyi, Marx, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Adorno, Dewey, and others is used to investigate how the modern sciences and the development of capitalism change both humankind’s relations to nature and the nature of value, and so affect the role of art in human self-understanding. The aesthetic dimensions of modern philosophy help to uncover often neglected historical shifts in how ‘subjective’ and ‘objective’ are conceived. Seeing art as a kind of philosophy, and philosophy as a kind of art reveals unresolved tensions between the different cultural domains of the modern world, and questions some of the orientation of contemporary philosophy.

He followed three orientations: Science is more than the acquisition of methodological and theoretical competence. Linguistic landscape analysis is the study of visual language use in public space. Its fundamental premise is that the ways in which languages are visually used (or not used) contribute to the discursive construction of a distinct sense of place. Linguistic landscape analysis is related to language policy in two key ways, one indirect and one direct. Indirectly, all language policies entextualize language ideologies; analyzing the visual representation of the linguistic order in the public space of a community provides insight into how values present in policies may or may not be iterated in everyday experiences. Directly, some polities regulate what languages may be used in public spaces, as well as how they may be used. Language policy researchers investigate such regulations and how they may or may not relate to the actual practice of language use on signs in specific communities. This chapter reviews work that has taken indirect and direct orientations to studying language policy and linguistic landscapes. Suggestions for future directions for both are provided.

The diversity of cultures, religions, and moral values and the ways in which liberalism deals with this plurality is the topic at the centre of this book. The author illustrates, in a critical and original way, the recent international debate on liberalism and diversity. In doing that, he discusses some controversial issues such as multiculturalism and minority rights, immigration, religious pluralism, children education, and the place of religion in society as well. After an analysis of some recent liberal theories, the book works out a solution to the problem of ensuring a peaceful and stable coexistence of different groups within the same institutional setting. It is a solution that is liberal in its general orientation, since it has a liberal allegiance to equality and individual rights. However, the proposed solution tries to recognize the due space to community loyalties, religious belongings, and cultural traditions. In addition to this, the author proposes a new theory of political obligation, namely of how a plural society can persist, notwithstanding deep cultural and religious pluralism. In this book, the analytical rigour typical of the philosophical tradition, is not separated from attention to social reality and its problems. In fact, particularly interesting is the way in which the book tests its theoretical achievements with the issue of religious pluralism in India. The outcome is that peaceful coexistence and respect for religious freedoms is possible even in a fragmented society such as India.

Medical doctors play a crucial role in the allocation and use of resources in health care systems. They shape capacities to renew policy orientations and innovate models of care. However, little attention has been paid to their specific role in health reforms. This book explores this aspect by looking at the role of the medical profession in health reforms in two mature welfare states with publicly-funded healthcare systems (PFHS): Canada and England. Specifically, the book investigates the multifaceted and paradoxical situation where a dominant profession – medicine – faces increasing pressures to become an active player and an ally in major policy efforts and system-wide reforms driven by governments. The conceptual underpinning of this work builds on the contribution of various areas of studies, namely the sociology of professions, studies on professions and organisations and law. The analysis investigates reformative processes from the inception of both PFHS and identifies the role of the medical profession in policy formulation. The focus is predominantly on the role of organised medicine (unions, professional associations and colleges) with their political struggles to promote and advance medical values and interests in a context where governments aim to transform health care systems. Empirically, the book builds on a socio-historical and institutional narrative of health care reforms and on the role played by the medical profession in both countries. The book offers insights into the government's ability to drive change in the health care system and to engage medical doctors as partners in health reforms.

Im vorliegenden fünften Band der Reihe MimaSch werden Entstehung, Realisierung und Ergebnisse einer immer wieder geforderten Zusammenarbeit zwischen Schule und Universität dokumentiert. Im Zuge der themen- und kompetenzorientierten Vermittlung Mittelhochdeutscher Sprache und Literatur des Lehrstuhls für Deutsche Philologie des Mittelalters wurde zusammen mit dem E.T.A-Hoffmann-Gymnasium Bamberg in der gymnasialen Oberstufe ein wissenschaftspropädeutisches Seminar zum Heldenbegriff durchgeführt, an dessen Ende erste wissenschaftliche Arbeiten verfasst und präsentiert wurden. In einer Einführung wird u.a. das mittelhochdeutsche Nibelungenlied als Ausgangstext für eine schulische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Heldenbegriff diskutiert. Darüber hinaus wird aus der Sicht der betreuenden Lehrkraft der Mehrwert einer Ko-operation zwischen Schule und Universität gerade im Hinblick der aktuellen Kompetenzorientierung dargelegt. Abschließend werden die Qualifikationsarbeiten der Schüler:innen gesammelt, die eindrucksvoll die Lernprozesse und erzielten Lernerfolge verdeutlichen. In this fifth volume of the MimaSch series, the development, realization and results of a collabo-ration between school and university that has been repeatedly called for are documented. In the course of the topic- and competence-oriented teaching of Middle High German language and literature of the Chair of German Philology of the Middle Ages, a scientific propaedeutic seminar on the concept of the hero was carried out together with the E.T.A Hoffmann Gymnasium Bam-berg in the grammar school upper level, at the end of which the first scientific papers were writ-ten and presented. In an introduction, the Middle High German Nibelungenlied is discussed as a starting text for an educational examination of the concept of the hero. Furthermore, from the perspective of the supervising teacher, the added value of a cooperation between school and uni-versity is demonstrated, especially with regard to the current competence orientation. Finally, the qualification works of the students are compiled, which impressively show the learning processes and achieved learning successes.
