1.1 My paper entitled ‘The Matching of Assets to Liabilities’ described a new study of the subject of matching. The paper outlined the mathematical framework, showed some calculations, and suggested various applications in the field of actuarial valuation.1.2 Subsequently A. D. Wilkie published a note entitled ‘Portfolio Selection in the Presence of Fixed Liabilities: a Comment on “The Matching of Assets to Liabilities”’. Wilkie's note appears to represent a new extension of portfolio selection theory which enables him to encompass the conventional portfolio theory and to show where my approach to matching fits into the picture.1.3 This paper is in the nature of a reply to that of Wilkie. My objective at the stage of the first draft was to re-examine the matching portfolio, as defined in relation to specified liabilities, in view of the wide range of alternative portfolios which Wilkie has described. The scope of this work progressed well beyond my original plans when I found a most interesting mathematical relationship between the ‘matching portfolios’ described in my earlier paper and the ‘efficient portfolios’ described in Wilkie's.

AbstractA FIMAG Working Party was set up in 1989 to consider the stochastic investment model proposed by A. D. Wilkie, which had been used by a number of actuaries for various purposes, but had not itself been discussed at the Institute. This is the Report of that Working Party. First, the Wilkie model is described. Then the model is reviewed, and alternative types of model are discussed. Possible applications of the model are considered, and the important question of ‘actuarial judgement’ is introduced. Finally the Report looks at possible future developments. In appendices, Clarkson describes a specific alternative model for inflation, and Wilkie describes some experiments with ARCH models. In further appendices possible applications of stochastic investment models to pension funds, to life assurance and to investment management are discussed.

The aim of this paper is to use a model office to examine the potential impact of AIDS on non-linked life assurance business in the UK.The subject of AIDS continues to stimulate a large amount of research. The UK actuarial profession has been kept informed by the regular Bulletins [1-5] from the Institute of Actuaries AIDS Working Party (the “IAWP”). Using a model developed by A. D. Wilkie [6], the IAWP examined the possible spread of the infection amongst male homosexuals and produced tables of additional mortality. The most recent Bulletin (No. 4), published in March 1989, updated these projections in the light of new data, and we have based our investigations principally upon these more recent projections.

Nematodes of the genus Cosmocercoides Wilkie, 1930 from Bufo americanus and Deroceras laeve, generally considered to belong to the same species (Cosmocercoides dukae), were compared. Male worms from B. americanus had 20 or 21 rosette papillae per subventral row whereas males from D. laeve had 13 to 14. Worms from toads had numerous simple postanal papillae. Worms from slugs generally lacked such papillae. Worms from the two hosts differed morphometrically and were well separated by discriminant analysis after bias of worm length was removed by analysis of covariance. Differences in isoenzyme migration were detected using starch gel electrophoresis. In cross-transmission experiments, more toads became infected when exposed to larvae of worms from toads than when exposed to larvae of worms from slugs. More slugs became infected when exposed to larvae from slugs than when exposed to larvae from toads. Intensity of mature worms recovered was significantly (p < 0.05) greater (and patent infections developed) when transmission was from toad to toad or from slug to slug than when transmission was from toad to slug or from slug to toad. No patent infections were recorded from toads or slugs exposed to larvae from the unrelated host. The results indicate that worms in toads and slugs are not conspecific. Cosmocercoides variabilis (Harwood, 1930) Travassos, 1931 is resurrected as the name of the species occurring in B. americanus, Cosmoceroides dukae (Holl, 1928) Travassos, 1931 is retained as the name of the species occurring in D. laeve.

ABSTRACT Pasteurella multocida is the causative agent of fowl cholera in birds. In a previous study using signature-tagged mutagenesis, we identified a mutant, AL251, which was attenuated for virulence in mice and in the natural chicken host. Sequence analysis indicated that AL251 had an insertional inactivation of the gene waaQPM , encoding a putative heptosyl transferase, required for the addition of heptose to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (M. Harper, J. D. Boyce, I. W. Wilkie, and B. Adler, Infect. Immun. 71:5440-5446, 2003). In the present study, using mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance, we have confirmed the identity of the enzyme encoded by waaQPM as a heptosyl transferase III and demonstrated that the predominant LPS glycoforms isolated from this mutant are severely truncated. Complementation experiments demonstrated that providing a functional waaQPM gene in trans can restore both the LPS to its full length and growth in mice to wild-type levels. Furthermore, we have shown that mutant AL251 is unable to cause fowl cholera in chickens and that the attenuation observed is not due to increased serum sensitivity.

Parodies and travesty texts of Russian journalism of the early 1870s (published in “Iskra” and “Sankt-Peterburgskie Vedomosti”) are considered in the aspect of genre functions, conventions, and elements of the “contract” between the author and the reader. The paper attempts to contextualize the parodies “Cannibals, or people of the sixties” (1871) by D. D. Minaev and “She is a criminal, or not?” (1872) by V. P. Burenin following the changing field of literature and journalism, in particular, a crisis of the polemic novel, growing popularity of actionpacked fiction and mass literature, competition of “thick magazines”, weeklies, and newspapers. Special attention is paid to the editions of two parodies. Minaev’s parody “Cannibals, or people of the sixties” is an anti-nihilistic novel in the carnival space of grotesque and satire. By revealing the unsightly sides of the originals and prototypes, excessive eroticism (against V. Avenarius and V. Krestovsky) and sensational deviance (forcing one to recall A. Pisemsky, N. Leskov and F. Dostoyevsky), indicate the exhaustion of the source material. Burenin’s parody also demonstrates the exhaustion of topical themes and motives. Claiming to be a “follower” of A. Dumas-fils, E. Zola, P. A. Ponson du Terrail, Burenin skillfully parodies both a foreign crime novel (first of all, Wilkie Collins) and domestic examples of the “same” genre (Turgenev, Dostoevsky, Akhsharumov). The parodies under study combine the baroque with the postmodernist aesthetics, making these texts available for further interpretation and commentary.

Hare’s theory to reveal psychopathic traits shown by Annie Wilkes. The result of this research, there are eleven psychopathic traits in Annie Wilke. That are egocentric, lack of empathy, lack of concern for others, impulsivity, poor behavioral control, have an attractive outward appearrance, shallow emotions, have no fear, high posses feelings for personal satisfication, have a cruel social relationship with others and anti- social.

Protected and open field tomato crops are economically important for Portuguese agriculture. In 1983, Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato (Okabe, 1933) Young, Dye & Wilkie, 1978 was first reported affecting protected crops (3) and then later under open field conditions (1). In the 2009 spring/summer season, several outbreaks of bacterial speck of tomato showing an unusual degree of severity were observed in open fields from the Tagus Valley Region. Typical symptoms included necrotic specks surrounded by a yellow halo on younger and older leaves with losses higher than 60% due to the heavy floral bud abortion. Abnormal lesions on the stems, as well as on the petioles and fruits, together with reduced growth of the entire plant, which is normally uncommon, were frequently observed in affected plants from distinct tomato cultivars (H-9665, H-9776, and CDX 255), two of them carrying the Pto resistance gene. Samples collected from different fields and cultivars were observed and used for isolation of the causal agent on King's medium B. The isolates were characterized (2) and Koch's postulates were fulfilled by carrying out pathogenicity tests. Ten plants from three commercial cultivars carrying the Pto resistance gene (CXD 255, Defender F1, and H-9775) were inoculated by spraying bacterial water suspensions (108 CFU ml–1) and kept under environmental conditions favorable for disease development. Positive and negative controls were also performed using P. syringae pv. tomato type strain (CFBP 2212T; race 0) and sterile distilled water, respectively. Cultural and biochemical characterization of the isolates showed their ability to produce levan, use sucrose, and induce a hypersensitivity reaction on tobacco leaves. Moreover, the isolates were oxidase negative, did not hydrolyze arginine nor produce soft rot on potato slices, and did not use erythritol as well as dl-lactate, identifying them as P. syringae pv. tomato. Typical and severe bacterial speck symptoms were produced in the Pto resistant tomato plants 4 days after inoculation and the isolates could be recovered after reisolation. Negative control plants showed no disease symptoms and CFBP 2212 was unable to produce typical lesions, except for a few in the older leaves. Altogether these results pointed to P. syringae pv. tomato race 1 as the disease causative agent. Further confirmation was achieved by partial sequencing of the rpoD gene using primers PsrpoD FNP1 and PsrpoDnprpcr1 (4). rpoD sequences, obtained from two isolates (CPBF 1288, GenBank HM368535; CPBF 1290, GenBank HM368537), were compared by nucleotide BLAST at NCBI displaying a 100% level of DNA similarity with strain Pto T1 belonging to P. syringae pv. tomato race 1. The homonymy of some fossil and extant species names of Cinnamomum is resolved. Cinnamomum gracile (Geyler) Ettingshausen (fossil) is replaced by a new name C. camphoricum nom. nov., because of the earlier homonym C. gracile Miquel (extant); C. costulatum nom. nov. is proposed to replace the later homonym C. apiculatum Saporta (fossil fruits) non C. apiculatum Pilar (fossil leaves); C. fajumicum nom. nov. is proposed instead of C. africanum Engelhardt (fossil) non C. africanum Lukmanoff (extant); C. kalbaricum nom. nov. instead of C. grandifolium Cammerloher (extant) non C. grandifolium (Ettingshausen) Schimper (fossil); C. weddellii nom. nov. in place of C. orbiculatum Lukmanoff (extant) non C. orbiculatum Saporta (fossil). Cinnamomum camphoricarpum sp. nov. is validated instead of the invalidly published C. macropodum Miki (lacking holotype designation when published) based on fossil fruits and seeds from Pliocene sediments of Japan. Cinnamomum goeppertii Ettingshausen is rehabilitated as a legitimate substitute for Daphnogene javanica Göppert, because the combination C. javanicum (Göppert) van Konijnenburg-van Cittert, van Waveren & Jonkers is illegitimate due to the existence of an earlier homonym, C. javanicum Blume (extant). Pterospermum wilkieanum nom. nov. (Malvaceae) is proposed instead of P. gracile Wilkie (extant) non P. gracile Geyler (fossil) (≡ C. gracile (Geyler) Ettingshausen). Cinnamomum salicifolium (Nees) Kostermans and C. trinerve (Lundell) Kostermans (extant) were found to be later illegitimate homonyms of fossil-species, C. salicifolium Staub and C. trinerve Bell respectively. Furthermore Cinnamomiphyllum Nathorst, Daphnogene grandifolia, D. lanceolata, Cinnamomum broteroi, C. orbiculatum, C. salicifolium Staub (non (Nees) Kostermans), C. trinerve Bell (non (Lundell) Kostermans), and C. ucrainicum are lectotypified. New combinations are validated: Cinnamomoides broteroi comb. nov., C. ellipticum comb. nov., C. humei comb. nov., C. jordanicum comb. nov., Cinnamomum duabicum comb. nov., Neolitsea marginata comb. nov., N. pannonica comb. nov., N. staubii comb. nov. As an addition to Taxonomic Literature II records, the precise dates of publication of the taxonomic works of Göppert’s Die Tertiärflora auf der Insel Java (1854), Lukmanoff’s Nomenclature et iconographie des Canneliers et Camphriers (1878, not 1889), Ettingshausen’s Beitrag zur Kenntnis der Tertiärflora der Insel Java (1883) and Zur Tertiärflora von Borneo (1883, not 1884) are established here.

Over the last thirty years or so, sensation fiction has shaken off its scandalous roots to become a respectable area of academic study. The transformation began with the publication of Winifred Hughes's The Maniac in the Cellar (1980) and Patrick Brantlinger's “What Is ‘Sensational’ about the ‘Sensation Novel’?” (1982), and gathered pace in the 1980s and 90s through the contributions of Ann Cvetkovich, Pamela Gilbert, D. A. Miller, Lyn Pykett, and Jenny Bourne Taylor. One of the results of all this scholarly interest is that the genre has begun to attract more introductory works that concentrate on consolidating what others have said. Ideas that were once considered new or controversial are now seen as common knowledge: we know that sensation fiction involves more than the influential novels written in the 1860s by Mary Elizabeth Braddon and Wilkie Collins; we are familiar with the frequent blurring between sensation fiction and other genres (including crime fiction and the gothic); we are well schooled in interdisciplinary approaches that read sensation fiction alongside science, psychology, and law; and we are used to competing claims for sensation fiction as a subversive or conservative genre. With so much attention being given to a collection of writings once described by Hughes as “irretrievably minor” (167) and by Brantlinger as “a minor subgenre of British fiction” (1), one could be forgiven for thinking that there are few secrets left to be uncovered. Yet, as the wide array of books considered here attests, the critical appeal of sensation fiction and Victorian crime shows no sign of abating. If anything, the first few years of the twenty-first century have seen even greater levels of interest: a number of Victorian Studies conferences have chosen sensation as their theme, and the genre features regularly in the pages of academic journals. Given that the extent of our ongoing fascination would probably have shocked a previous generation of scholars, this review of recent critical trends will try and figure out why the genre possesses such a powerful hold on our thinking and whether or not this hold is likely to continue.

SUMMARY In this study, a Bayesian gravity inversion algorithm is applied to infer a complete 3-D density model of the crust in the region of the Wilkes Land. One of the main objective of this work is to provide information on the thickening/thinning of the crust beneath the basin or the amount and characteristics of sediment deposits in the area. After collecting all the latest available geophysical data and models of the study region, neglecting gravity derived information, a first 3-D model was defined in terms of principal geological horizons and density distribution together with an estimate of its accuracy. Then, two gravity observations, namely gravity disturbances and second radial derivative of the anomalous potential, were jointly inverted in order to adjust the a-priori 3-D model and obtain the so-called a posterior improved model, now coherent with gravity. The present work summarizes the principal results obtained within the inversion performed in the Wilkes Land region together with a sensitivity analysis to assess the reliability of the inverted 3-D model. The results show a crustal thickness below the Wilkes Land higher than 25 km, characterized by higher densities, sedimentary basins that reach in some zones thicknesses of about 7 km and geometries below the Trans-Antarctic Mountains that suggest a large root of the mountains and lighter mantle densities.

Diffusion coefficients, D, for ethanol in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) were measured in the temperature range 306.15–331.15 K and along the 10.5 MPa isobar, using the Taylor dispersion technique. The obtained diffusivities ranged from 1.49 × 10−8 to 2.98 × 10−8 m2 s−1, an order of magnitude higher than in usual liquids. The dependence of D on temperature and solvent density was examined. Various correlation models based in the hydrodynamic theory were assessed to estimate the diffusion coefficients, with reasonable results obtained for the Wilke–Chang and Lai–Tan models.

Relevancy. The combination of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and type 2 diabetes is studied insufficiently. The incomplete treatment regimen hinders the solution to this problem by including statins in the complex treatment of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease combined with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of including statins in the complex treatment of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease secondary to type 2 diabetes mellitus. Materials and methods. Examination of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including 64 patients with concomitant type 2 diabetes, was conducted on the basis of the pulmonology department of the Chernivtsi Regional Clinical Hospital in 2016-2020. Patients were divided into two groups – the main and the control. Patients with COPD with concomitant type 2 diabetes in the main group (49 patients) were prescribed atorvastatin at a dose of 20-40 mg once a day. The control group (15 COPD patients with concomitant type 2 diabetes) received essential treatment without atorvastatin. Patients received basic therapy depending on the group of patients (A, B, C and D) and the prevalence of shortness of breath or the frequency of exacerbations, long-acting bronchodilators (long-acting β2-agonists and/or long-acting anticholinergic drugs). A separate group of patients received a combination of a long-acting β2-agonist with an inhaled glucocorticosteroid. Some patients were prescribed roflumilast and antibactereal drugs from the group of macrolides (azithromycin or erythromycin). In the presence of sputum, patients were prescribed mucolytic drugs (Lazolvan, ACC, carbocisteine, erdosteine). In case of exacerbation, patients received a short course glucocorticosteroids parenterally, antibacterial drugs (for infectious exacerbation), nebulizer therapy. The effectiveness of therapy was evaluated after six months of treatment using the following diagnostic methods: clinical data (dyspnea, cough, sputum production - according to the BCSS scale; and shortness of breath, cough, sputum production and its color - according to the Paggiaro scale), the number of hospitalizations per year, the number emergency medical calls. Mathematical processing of the obtained data was carried out using programs BioStat 2009 Professional, version 5.8.4.3 (AnalystSoft Inc.), SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science Statistics) 16.0, Statistisa 10.0 StatSoft Inc., Microsoft Excel 2010. Before testing statistical hypotheses were determined coefficients of asymmetry and kurtosis using the Hahn-Shapiro-Wilkie test to analyze the normality of the distribution of values in randomized samples. Results. When analyzing clinical data in treatment dynamics with atorvastatin, it was found that according to the BCSS, shortness of breath in patients of the main group significantly decreased. Cough in COPD patients with concomitant type 2 diabetes treated with atorvastatin decreased by 25.3% at the end of treatment. A decrease in sputum production was observed in two groups of patients, and the changes were significant. Reduction of the frequency of exacerbations per year, the number of emergency calls, and the number of hospitalizations per year in the dynamics of atorvastatin treatment were also observed in COPD patients with concomitant type 2 diabetes. Conclusion. the use of atorvastatin in the complex treatment of COPD patients with concomitant type 2 diabetes resulted in a decrease in the frequency of exacerbations per year, the number of emergency calls, and the number of hospital admissions per year.

Abstract Purpose: The virus inactivation capacities of the optimised solvent/detergent (S/D) and terminal dry-heat (PermaHeat) treatments, as part of the Wilate® manufacturing process, were determined in this study. Wilate® is a novel, human plasma-derived, VWF/FVIII concentrate, which through the clinical trials has been proven safe and effective in the treatment of von Willebrand disease and haemophilia A patients. Methods: S/D virus inactivation studies were performed in down-scaled settings using 1% Octoxynol/0.3% TNBP for 4 hours at +23–28°C. PermaHeat was performed at +100°C for 120 min at 0.6% residual moisture in the lyophilisate (0.7–1.6% during regular manufacturing). Robustness conditions were studied for both steps. Summary of results: S/D treatment revealed the following inactivation ratios [log10]: HIV-1: ≥7.5, SBV: ≥8.6 and PRV: ≥8.5. All enveloped viruses (EV) were inactivated below the detection limits of the infectivity assays already after 2 minutes. Variation of process parameters did not reduce the efficacy of the S/D treatment. For PermaHeat the following inactivation ratios were found at extreme conditions, i.e. low residual moisture [log10]: EV: HIV-1: ≥5.8, SBV: ≥5.5 and PRV: 4.9 - NEV (non-enveloped viruses): REO-3: ≥6.4, HAV: ≥5.7, PPV: 4.1. Conclusion: The Wilate® manufacturing process comprises two dedicated, efficient and robust virus inactivation steps, S/D and PermaHeat treatments. The total capacities [log10] for the individual viruses amount to ≥13.3 for HIV-1, ≥14.1 for SBV, ≥13.4 for PRV, ≥6.4 for REO-3, ≥5.7 for HAV, and 4.1 for PPV. Other production steps may contribute to virus reduction as well.

Abstract Purpose: Wilate® is a novel, human plasma-derived, high purity, double virus inactivated coagulation factor concentrate. The safe and effective treatment of von Willebrand disease patients and haemophilia A has been demonstrated in clinical trials. The very high virus safety is achieved by an optimised solvent/detergent (S/D) method and terminal dry-heat treatment (PermaHeat) of the lyophilised product, not affecting the integrity of the proteins, which was investigated in this study. Methods: Analyses of PermaHeat treated (+100°C for 120 min) Wilate® samples with different residual moisture (RM) contents were performed in order to evaluate the upper RM limit in lyophilised samples. Samples with RM up to 7.3% were subjected to SDS-PAGE, immunoblotting and peptide mapping. Further investigations were based on FVIII:C activity testing and phospholipid binding properties, VWF multimer analysis, Ristocetin cofactor (VWF:RCo) activity and collagen binding (VWF:CB). Summary of results: The analyses confirmed that the structural and functional integrities of both VWF and FVIII were maintained during PermaHeat of Wilate® at +100°C for 120 minutes when the RM was kept at or below 1.8% during the heating procedure. Changes of protein-biochemical properties were detectable only for RM values exceeding 2%. Denaturation of samples occurred at RM of more than 3.5%. Conclusion: Beside S/D treatment, optimised PermaHeat treatment of the lyophilised VWF/FVIII product ensures the high viral safety margin of Wilate®. According to the results, the RM content during PermaHeat treatment was specified with a great safety margin to a maximum of 1.6%. This limit is carefully controlled in each vial before heating by RM testing utilising near infrared (NIR). At or below this RM no structural or functional changes of VWF and FVIII were detected after PermaHeat treatment.

Penn State-Hazleton and Penn State- Wilkes-Barre are two of Penn State’s 24 campuses, both located in Northeastern Pennsylvania, offering similar baccalaureate four-year degree programs. There are also several associate degree programs; however, many students take advantage of Penn State’s “2+2 Degree Plan,” in which students spend the first two years of study at one Penn State campus and then transition to the main campus at University Park or another campus for the remaining two years. Because of the mobile student body, students and faculty often have difficulty engaging academically with others outside the classroom. The addition of 3-D printing at both campus libraries has proved to be an excellent way to increase campus connections.

Harley, Origanum vulgare L., Rubus ulmifolius Schott, Salvia tomentosa Mill., Thymus longicaulis C.Presl subsp. longicaulis, Trachystemon orientalis (L.) D. Don] üreaz, kimotripsin inhibe edici ve antioksidan aktivitelerinin tespiti amaçlanmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Bu amaçla bitkilerden metanol ve su ekstreleri hazırlanmıştır. Daha sonra in vitro üreaz ve kimotripsin inhibitör aktiviteleri belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca farklı yöntemlerle antioksidan aktiviteleri (ABTS, CUPRAC, DPPH), toplam fenol ve flavonoit içerikleri de tespit edilmiştir. Sonuç ve Tartışma: D. communis, O. vulgare, S. tomentosa ve T. longicaulis'in metanol ekstreleri orta düzeyde üreaz inhibitör aktivite (%34.26 ile %44.94 aralığında inhibisyon) gösterirken, diğerlerinde aktivite daha düşük bulunmuştur. En güçlü kimotripsin inhibe edici aktivite R. ulmifolius metanol ekstresi ve T. orientalis su ekstresinde gözlenmiştir (IC50 değerleri sırasıyla 65.32 ve 78.65µg/ml). Genel olarak, çalışılan bitkiler yüksek fenol ve flavonoit içeriklerine uygun olarak yüksek antioksidan aktivite göstermiştir. Sonuç olarak R. ulmifolius ve T. orientalis kuvvetli kimotripsin inhibe edici aktiviteleri ile dikkat çekmiştir. Bu bitkilerin kimotripsin aktivitesi üzerinde daha kapsamlı çalışmaların yapılması gerekmektedir.

Abstract Numerous incidents of structural damage at the U.S. Antarctic Program’s (USAP) McMurdo Station due to extreme wind events (EWEs) have been reported over the past decade. Utilizing nearly 20 yr (~1992–2013) of University of Wisconsin automatic weather station (AWS) data from three different stations in the Ross Island region (Pegasus North, Pegasus South, and Willie Field), statistical analysis shows no significant trends in EWE frequency, intensity, or duration. EWEs more frequently occur during the transition seasons. To assess the dynamical environment of these EWEs, Antarctic Mesoscale Prediction System (AMPS) forecast back trajectories are computed and analyzed in conjunction with several other AMPS fields for the strongest events at McMurdo Station. The synoptic analysis reveals that McMurdo Station EWEs are nearly always associated with strong southerly flow due to an approaching Ross Sea cyclone and an upper-level trough around Cape Adare. A Ross Ice Shelf air stream (RAS) environment is created with enhanced barrier winds along the Transantarctic Mountains, downslope winds in the lee of the glaciers and local topography, and a tip jet effect around Ross Island. The position and intensity of these Ross Sea cyclones are most influenced by the occurrence of a central Pacific ENSO event, which causes the upper-level trough to move westward. An approaching surface cyclone would then be in position to trigger an event, depending on how the wind direction and speed impinges on the complex topography around McMurdo Station.

Concurrent N mineralization and immobilization in soils receiving poultry litter containing woodchip bedding may reduce synchrony between the short-term N supply and crop N demand. Therefore, we used soil chemical tests, ion exchange membranes, and wheat N uptake to assess N dynamics in a poultry-litter-amended soil. Air-dried soil was thoroughly mixed with five poultry litter rates (50, 100, 150, 200, or 250 mg total N kg−1) and preincubated for 7 d in a controlled environment chamber. After preincubating, soil was placed in 10-cm-diameter pots and planted with spring wheat (Triticum aestivum ‘Wilkin’), or left unplanted and monitored with anion and cation exchange membranes for 45 d. Soil nitrate (NO3-N) concentration increased with poultry litter application rate at the end of the preincubation period, but subsequent wheat N uptake did not, suggesting that little net N mineralization occurred during the 45 d of wheat growth. The membrane data indicated a shift from net N immobilization during the early part of the wheat growth period to net mineralization during the latter portion of the wheat growth period. We conclude that alternating N mineralization and immobilization in soils receiving poultry litter containing woodchip bedding limited the short-term N supply to wheat.

Introduction:Von Willebrand disease (VWD) is the most common congenital bleeding disorder with a prevalence of symptomatic cases of 1 in 1,000. VWD is characterized by quantitative or qualitative abnormalities in von Willebrand factor (VWF), resulting in impaired haemostasis. To increase VWF levels, VWF concentrates are the only treatment option for approximately 20% of VWD patients for whom 1-deamino-8-D-arginine vasopressin (DDAVP) is not effective or is contraindicated. Wilate® (Octapharma AG, Lachen, Switzerland) is a high purity, double virus-inactivated, freeze-dried concentrate of VWF and FVIII. The ratio of VWF to FVIII is near the physiological value of 1:1 and is designed to simplify dosing and monitoring. Wilate®, initially approved in 2005 in Germany, is currently broadly approved worldwide for treatment of VWD and Hemophilia A. This non-interventional, prospective study in VWD patients was designed to collect information on the safety, tolerability and efficacy of Wilate® in routine clinical practice. We present the results of an interim analysis conducted in Canadian patients who received Wilate® in a routine clinical setting as prophylaxis, on-demand treatment and/or in a surgical setting. Methods:Ethics committee approval was obtained from all participating centres, and all VWD patients prescribed Wilate® from participating physicians were eligible for inclusion. Patients were excluded for the presence of VWF inhibitors, bleeding disorders other than VWD, a history of non-compliance, prohibitively difficult venous access, or the inability to follow study requirements. Routine clinical use of Wilate® for prophylaxis, on demand treatment of bleeding episodes, and prophylaxis for major and minor surgeries were documented. Parameters of routine clinical use are reported here and include exposure days, dosing, and number of infusions. Adverse drug reactions (ADRs), tolerability assessments, and haemostatic efficacy assessments are also reported. Results:Interim data from 13 patients, with a mean age of 45.6 (range 16 to 78 years), enrolled in participating Canadian centres was available for this analysis. Patients consisted of 3 males and 10 females, nine with type 1, three with type 2, and one with type 3 VWD. Two patients were treated for on-demand bleeding episodes, 2 were treated prophylactically, whereas 11 patients were treated for surgeries. A total of 1 051 000 IU Wilate® was infused in the thirteen patients with an average dose for all indications of 46 ± 9.7 IU/kg. Tolerability was 'excellent' in 284 of 285 (99.6%) assessed infusions. Hemostatic efficacy of Wilate® was assessed as 'excellent' or 'good' for all on-demand treatments of bleeding episodes. All 29 breakthrough bleeds, which were primarily GI bleeding, were treated successfully in one long-term prophylactic patient with severe VWD in 17 months. One other patient was treated for seventeen days following surgery and experienced no bleeding episodes. Eleven patients underwent 12 surgical procedures, one patient underwent 2 minor dental procedures, and 10 patients underwent ten major surgeries. In all 12 surgeries the haemostatic efficacy of Wilate® treatment was assessed as 'excellent.' No thrombotic events or severe ADRs were observed. Conclusion:This study is a part of ongoing pharmacovigilance of Wilate® and these interim observations support its safety and efficacy for VWD patients in routine clinical settings. The text concerns the “Ode in Memory of Doctor Jenner, the Inventor of the Vaccine, Celebrated by the Medical Association in Vilnius…” [pol. „Oda na pamiątkę urodzin doktora Jennera, wynalazcy wakcyny, obchodzoną przez Cesarskie Towarzystwo Medyczne w Wilnie…”], written in 1820 by forgotten Lithuanian poet, Ignacy Szydlowski. This poem, delivered in front of the Medical Association in Vilnius and reprinted at least fourfold, was dedicated to the memory of the English doctor and originator of vaccination against smallpox. Therefore, it belongs to the post-partition poetry devoted to works of famous personalities of the world of science. The article includes analysis and interpretation of Szydłowski’s poem in the light of Polish and European encomiastic tradition. The primary aim of this consideration is to show the real implication that panegiryc poetic have on literary image of epidemic.

The article is aimed at presentation of results of archaeological underwater excavations of remains of the early Medieval bridge on the stronghold island Oslborg. There are vestiges of the Slavic and early German stronghold on the Grosser Plòner Lake island near Plon in north Germany. This stronghold has been repeatedly mentioned by Adam of Bremen and Helmold of Bosau - the 11th and 12th century annalists. Underwater excavations, undertaken in two study zones of 75 square meters in total, resulted in discovery of the bridge remains which revealed themselves in the form of 228 posts being elements of its bearing construction placed on the lake bottom. Dendrochronological analysis of 79 posts indicates that the bridge was constructed in 975 AD and it was rebuilt many times afterwards. Trees for subsequent reconstructions were cut down in the years 994, 995, 1005, 1008, 1011, 1012, 1013, 1025 and for the last time in 1096 AD. The excavations revealed also an assemblage of Slavic and early German pottery as well as 56 artefacts including 14 spearheads and 6 axes. O ácido diclorofenóxiacético (2,4 - D (C8H6Cl2O3) é um herbicida utilizado em larga escala no território nacional. A Organização Mundial de Saúde (OMS) classifica o 2,4-D como pouco tóxico, nocivo se ingerido ou inalado. Estudar os efeitos do seu uso em sementes de frutos que estão na mesa do brasileiro, contribui no âmbito da pesquisa e especialmente da agricultura. As sementes de tomate (Lycopersicon esculentum) é originário da América do Sul, e é cultivado em quase todo o mundo, tem alto valor comercial e possui importância gastronômica e benefícios a saúde gerando alto consumo. O presente trabalho analisou o efeito da toxidade do herbicida 2,4-D na germinação de sementes de L. esculentum em 7 e 14 dias. O experimento seguiu delineamento inteiramente casualisado, utilizando uma testemunha e três concentrações do herbicida 2,4-D (0,04; 0,08 e 0,12 mg/mL) com quatro repetições. Foi utilizado como substrato papel germitest, alocado em caixa gerbox e depositadas em câmara de germinação na temperatura de 25°C, a contagem das sementes germinadas foi realizada aos 7 e 14 dias. Foi feita a normalidade dos dados(Shapiro-Wilki) para a escolha do teste estatísticos adequado e melhor apresentação dos dados. Os dados não apresentaram normalidade com valor de p menor que 0.05, foi feito o teste de Kruskal-Wallis e posteriori de Dunn. As sementes de tomate mostraram-se totalmente intolerante ao herbicida. Mesmo em baixas concentrações, não houve germinação, apenas da testemunha. O 2,4 D apresentou-se fatal a germinação de sementes de tomate.

Within the large family of Dioscoreaceae, Dioscorea communis (L.) Caddick & Wilkin (syn. Tamus communis L.) is considered among the four most widespread representatives in Europe, and it is commonly known under the name black bryony or bryonia. To date, reports have revealed several chemical components from the leaves and tubers of this plant. Nevertheless, an extensive phytochemical investigation has not been performed on its berry juice. In the present study, metabolite profiling procedures, using LC-MS, GC-MS, and NMR approaches, were applied to investigate the chemical profile of the D. communis berries. This work reveals the presence of several metabolites belonging to different phytochemical groups, such as fatty acid esters, alkylamides, phenolic derivatives, and organic acids, with lactic acid being predominant. In parallel, based on orally transmitted traditional uses, the initial extract and selected fractions were tested in vitro for their antibacterial effects and exhibited good activity against two bacterial strains related to skin infections: methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Cutibacterium acnes. The MIC and MBC values of the extract were determined at 1.56% w/v against both bacteria. The results of this study provide important information on the chemical characterization of the D. communis berry juice, unveiling the presence of 71 metabolites, which might contribute to and further explain its specific antibacterial activity and its occasional toxicity.

Physical activity is very important for early childhood, especially outdoor activities that add a lot of new experiences. This study aims to check the relationship of children's outdoor activities and parenting styles and children's social skills. The participants are 125 parents of early childhood who attend kindergarten. The research method is a descriptive study using the relational screening model. The results showed that there was a relationship between outside play and parenting style on the social skills of children in their childhood. Democratic parenting styles are found to promote children's social skills, while authoritative parenting styles have a negative correlation with interpersonal skills, the ability to express verbally, self-control, listening skills, emotional management and adaptation to change. In the sub-dimensions of anger management and adaptation to changing skills is a significant difference between authoritative parenting styles and not permissive parenting with children's social skills. ReviewThis text is a review of the work entitled Baltu valodu atlants. Leksika 1: Flora (Eng. Atlas of the Baltic Languages. Lexis 1: Flora), published in Vilnius in 2013.The publication was prepared by linguists from the Institute of Latvian Language and the Institute of Lithuanian Language. The Atlas presents vocabulary from the second part of the 20th century on the territory of Latvia and Lithuania and partly of Belarus and Poland. The authors prepared 46 maps and descriptions of 26 words (connected with flora), which showed different phonetic variants of derivatives, linguistic parallels between the Latvian and Lithuanian dialects (lexical, semantic, geographical) and common Slavic-Baltic zone of interference. Publikację opracowali litewscy i łotewscy lingwiści z Instytutu Języka Litewskiego Akademii Nauk Litwy i Instytutu Języka Łotewskiego Uniwersytetu Łotewskiego w Rydze. W Atlasie zaprezentowano słownictwo z drugiej połowy XX w., funkcjonujące na obszarze Litwy, Łotwy a także częściowo Białorusi i Polski. Autorzy przedstawili 46 map i zaprezentowali opisy 26 nazw związanych z florą, ukazujących ich różne warianty fonetyczne oraz językowe paralele pomiędzy dialektami litewskimi i łotewskimi (leksykalne, semantyczne, geograficzne) oraz wspólną słowiańsko-bałtycką strefę kontaktów językowych.

Whereas Alan Day showed that the continuous lattices are the algebras of a filter monad on Set, we employ the theory of lax algebras (as developed by Barr, Pisani, Clementino, Hofmann, Tholen, Seal and others) to broaden this characterisation to a description of the wider class of continuous dcpos as algebras of a lax filter monad. Building on an axiomatisation of topological spaces through convergence as lax algebras of a lax extension of the filter monad to a category of relations, we show that those topological spaces whose associated lax algebra is in fact a strict algebra are what M. Erné called the C-spaces. The sober C-spaces are precisely the continuous dcpos under the Scott topology, and we discuss how the possibly little-known C-spaces, which have been studied by B. Banaschewski, J. D. Lawson, R.-E. Hoffmann, M. Erné and G. Wilke, very directly capture an essential topological notion of approximation inherent in the continuous dcpos, and hence provide a natural topological concept of domain.

ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui adanya pengaruh value for money perception dan emotional brand attachment terhadap niat membeli kosmetik halal khususnya produk Innisfree. Selain itu, untuk meningkatkan literasi tentang value for money perception dan emotional brand attachment terhadap buying intention. Pendekatan kuantitatif digunakan dalam metodologi penelitian ini dengan Path Analysis sebagai teknik analisis data. Pengumpulan data dengan menyebarkan kuesioner skala Likert berskala lima secara online. Responden dalam penelitian ini adalah 100 mahasiswi diberbagai universitas di Surabaya yang belum pernah menggunakan produk Innisfree. Hasil dari riset menunjukkan bahwa hubungan antar variabel value for money perception terhadap buying intention, value for money perception terhadap emotional brand attachment, dan emotional brand attachment terhadap buying intention ketiganya memiliki pengaruh secara signifikan positif. Kata Kunci: Value for Money Perception, Emotional Brand Attachment, Buying Intention, Kosmetik Halal. ABSTRACT This study aims to determine the effect of value for money perception and emotional brand attachment on the intention to buy halal cosmetics, especially Innisfree products. In addition, to increase literacy about value for money perception and emotional brand attachment to buying intention. A quantitative approach is used in this research methodology with Path Analysis as a data analysis technique. Collecting data by distributing a five-scale Likert scale questionnaire online. Respondents in this study were 100 female students in various universities in Surabaya who had never used Innisfree products. The results of the research show that the relationship between the variable value for money perception on buying intention, value for money perception on emotional brand attachment, and emotional brand attachment on buying intention, all three have a significant positive effect. Abstract A new approach is used to detect atmospheric teleconnections without being bound by orthogonality (such as empirical orthogonal functions). This method employs negative correlations in a global dataset to detect potential teleconnections. One teleconnection occurs between the Tasman Sea and the Southern Ocean. It is related to El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the Indian Ocean dipole (IOD), and the southern annular mode (SAM). This teleconnection is significantly correlated with SAM during austral summer, fall, and winter, with IOD during spring, and with ENSO in summer. It can thus be described as a hybrid between these modes. Given previously found relationships between IOD and ENSO, and IOD’s proximity to the teleconnection centers, correlations to IOD are generally stronger than to ENSO. Increasing pressure over the Tasman Sea leads to higher (lower) surface temperature over eastern Australia (the southwestern Pacific) in all seasons and is related to reduced surface temperature over Wilkes Land and Adélie Land in Antarctica during fall and winter. Precipitation responses are generally negative over New Zealand. For one standard deviation of the teleconnection index, precipitation anomalies are positive over Australia in fall, negative over southern Australia in winter and spring, and negative over eastern Australia in summer. When doubling the threshold, the size of the anomalous high-pressure center increases and annual precipitation anomalies are negative over southeastern Australia and northern New Zealand. Eliassen–Palm fluxes quantify the seasonal dependence of SAM, ENSO, and IOD influences. Analysis of the dynamical interactions between these teleconnection patterns can improve prediction of seasonal temperature and precipitation patterns in Australia and New Zealand.

Abstract As harsh weather conditions in Antarctica make it difficult to support a dense weather observing network there, it is critical to place new weather stations in locations that are optimal for a given monitoring goal. Here we demonstrate a network design algorithm that uses ensemble sensitivity to identify optimal locations for new automatic weather stations in Antarctica. We define the optimal location as one that maximizes the reduction in total variance of a given spatial field. Using WRF Model forecast output from the Antarctic Mesoscale Prediction System (AMPS), we identify the best locations for observations across the continent by considering two spatial fields: (i) the daily 0000 UTC 2-m temperature analysis field and (ii) the daily 0000 UTC 2-m air temperature 24-h forecast field. We explore the impact of spatial localization on the results, finding that a covariance length scale of 3000 km is appropriate for these metrics. We find optimal locations assuming that no stations exist on the continent (blank slate) and conditional on existing stations (CD90). In the “blank slate” scenario, the Megadunes region emerges as the most important location to both monitor temperature and reduce temperature forecast errors, with the Ronne Coast and the Siple Coast following. Results for the monitoring and forecasting metrics are similar for the CD90 subset as well, indicating that additional stations could benefit multiple performance goals. Considering the CD90 subset, Wilkes Land–Adelie Coast, Ellsworth Land, and Queen Maud Land–Interior are identified as regions to consider installing new stations for optimizing network performance.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie urszulanki Serca Jezusa Konającego Siostry Brygidy Rodziewicz, która była uczennicą i bliską współpracownicą Świętej Urszuli Ledóchowskiej.Przyszła na świat jako Zoe Rodziewicz 1 maja 1885 r. w Aszchabadzie w Rosji w rodzinie byłego powstańca styczniowego, inżyniera Zygmunta Rodziewicza i Małgorzaty z d. Stulgińskiej. Pobierała nauki w domu, gdzie uczyła się języków obcych, następnie była uczennicą Gimnazjum św. Katarzyny w Petersburgu, a potem w celu uzupełnienie wykształcenia podjęła naukę w krakowskiej szkole prowadzonej przez urszulanki. Tam trafiła pod opiekę Urszuli Ledóchowskiej. Bliski kontakt z nauczycielką i wychowawczynią przyczynił się do jej rozwoju duchowego. Wówczas też ujawnił się jej talent pedagogiczny. Wykazywała dużo inicjatywy w zajmowaniu się małymi sierotami. Po ukończeniu gminazjum rozpoczęła pracę nauczycielki w gimnazjum św. Katarzyny w Petersburgu.Złożyła śluby wieczyste 15 sierpnia 1920 r. Całe swoje życie poświęciła służbie Bogu i potrzebującym – zawsze była otwarta na krzywdę i potrzeby bliźniego, a przy tym odważna, serdeczna, troskliwa, oddana. Nauczała i wychowywała młode dziewczęta w Polsce i za granicą, przede wszystkim na misjach we Francji. Pełniła również rolę kierowniczki i przełożonej placówek urszulańskich m.in. w Wilnie, Sieradzu i Pniewach.Odeszła 21 sierpnia 1955 r. po ciężkiej chorobie i po ośmiu latach pełnienia posługi przełożonej generalnej zgromadzenia. Do końca okazywała budujące męstwo i całkowite zawierzenie Bogu. Spoczęła na cmentarzu zgromadzenia w Pniewach.

In this article, an outline of the famous Flemish writer Hendrik Conscience and his translations in Slovak reception is provided, with some additions from his international context, relevant in reception research. Some key publications in this context from Wilken Engelbrecht (Engelbrecht 2021) are supplemented by more recent archival research in Slovakia by the author. Engelbrecht (2018) further argues that the Slovak translations of Conscience arose independently of the Czech editions, in a different order and in a different literary context. He also argues that Conscience's popularity and position is different in the Slovak context, where the Catholic milieu is more emphasised and publications in Slovak were more under pressure from (Hungarian) censorship bodies. The contribution uses the findings of the comparative literature scholar Lieven D´Hulst. His (2013 and 2019) comparative studies on Conscience's reception are interesting because they offer some interesting research questions and a methodology. First of all, he examines whether the translated literature in question is able to fill specific "formal, generic or thematic niches in the target literature, especially than those niches for which the target literature itself has no or limited supply (D´Hulst 2013, p. 251)." The thesis of D´Hulst is applied on the Slovak case study within the first period of the translations of Conscience. The article presents an example of a Conscience adaptation within the Budapest-based Catholic circles of Slovak intelligentsia.

The largest group of material came from trench ST XV, excavated in the west parodos of the theatre in 1997 and 1998, while the second group of material was excavated in the west end of the stoa in 1991. The new groups of material studied and published in this article have built upon earlier work (D. Bailey on the stoa and J. Hayes on the theatre) to begin to develop a chronological typology for the Roman pottery of Sparta. The development of this pottery sequence has provided for the first time a solid basis for Roman ceramic studies in the area and opens new avenues for investigating broader economic, social and political issues.

Анотація:

Niniejsze opracowanie jest kontynuacją artykułu opublikowanego w „Pracach Filologicznych” w 2016 (Rutkovska 2016, 429–456), w którym omówiona została pisownia tylko tekstu polskiego w dwujęzycznej litewsko-polskiej postylli jezuity Konstantego Szyrwida, wydanej w 1629 i 1644 roku w Wilnie. Zachowując ogólną strukturę opisu norm graficznych tekstu polskiego, przedstawioną w pierwszej części opracowania, mam więc na celu prześledzić podobieństwa i odmienności w zapisie obu tekstów, które mają charakter regularny, systemowy. Dokonana analiza porównawcza grafii oraz ortografii stosowanej w tekście polskim i litewskim PK Szyrwida wykazała znaczne podobieństwa w zakresie zestawu znaków graficznych stosowanych w obu wersjach tekstu oraz ujawniła istnienie niektórych analogicznych zasad ortograficznych. Na tej podstawie można więc zrobić kilka wniosków ogólnych: a) w obu językowych wersjach tekstu była stosowana jedyna czcionka typograficzna pochodząca z różnych zbiorów zecerskich; b) zachowane są analogiczne wzorce ortograficzne zapisu o genezie łacińskiej; c) widoczne są wpływy polskie na dopiero kształtującą się ortografię litewską; d) sporadycznie spotykane są charakterystyczne pismom litewskim znaki graficzne w tekście polskim, które nie pełnią w nim żadnej specjalnej funkcji (są używane zamiast odpowiednich polskich). Zastosowane znaki graficzne i zaproponowane ujęcia ortograficzne w tekście litewskim świadczą o nawiązaniu do tradycji już istniejącego piśmiennictwa litewskiego, przede wszystkimwzorców drukarskich autorów z terenu Małej Litwy, metody ortograficznej M. Daukszy oraz usiłowaniach wypracowania tego wzorca, który będzie stosowany w drukach litewskich w ciągu następnych stuleci, tzw. pisowni Szyrwida.

Abstract Introduction: Recently virtual reality has been aggregated to the therapeutic possibilities for patients who need functionality gains, such as individuals with cerebral palsy (CP). Aim: to evaluate the effects of virtual reality on the gross motor function of individuals with CP. Methods: longitudinal study, realized in a special education school, with five individuals with CP (7.4 years of age ± 1.14) of both sexes, evaluated using the B, D and E dimensions of the GMFM 88, before and after the application of three Wii Fit Plus(r) console games: Hula Hoop, Slide Penguin and Soccer Heading. These games were applied for four minutes per game, at the beginner level, twice a week, for twelve consecutives weeks. The normality of the sample was evaluated through the Shapiro-Wilk's test. The results obtained before and after the Wii Fit(r) application were compared using descriptive statistics. Results: all the individuals obtained improvements in the dimensions evaluated after the virtual reality application, with a 5.14% general improvement, varying between 1.9% and 9.6%. The standing (D) and walking, running and jumping (E) dimensions were the dimensions which obtained higher improvement percentages. Conclusion: considering the study limitations, the results obtained suggest that virtual reality can promote benefits in the gross motor function of individuals with cerebral palsy.
