Underwater acoustic positioning systems are essential for underwater vehicles positioning and navigation. In this paper, a time-domain wideband fractional delay beamforming (WFDB) technique is proposed to improve underwater localization capability of planar arrays. In our method, digital delay lines are combined with adaptive-finite-impulse-response filters to achieve high accuracy beamforming results and reduce the design burden of the WFDB systems. Further, the beamforming results are used in the ray-tracing method to eliminate curvature effect of sound rays caused by the inhomogeneity of water, and therefore improving the computation accuracy of target position. We further develop a hexagonal planar array of 30 elements to verify the WFDB method in an indoor experimental pool. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method could successfully mitigate the ray bending problem and accurately estimate the position of targets in low SNR condition.

<span lang="EN-US">The ECG signal processing methods are tested and evaluated based on many databases. The most ECG database used for many researchers is the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database. The QRS-detection algorithms are essential for ECG analyses to detect the beats for the ECG signal. There is no standard number of beats for this database that are used from numerous researches. Different beat numbers are calculated for the researchers depending on the difference in understanding the annotation file. In this paper, the beat numbers for existing methods are studied and compared to find the correct beat number that should be used. We propose a simple function to standardize the beats number for any ECG PhysioNet database to improve the waveform database toolbox (WFDB) for the MATLAB program. This function is based on the annotation's description from the databases and can be added to the Toolbox. The function is removed the non-beats annotation without any errors. The results show a high percentage of 71% from the reviewed methods used an incorrect number of beats for this database.</span>

Purpose Disfluencies associated with stuttering generally occur in the initial position of words. This study reviews data from a school-age child with an atypical stuttering profile consisting predominantly of word-final disfluencies (WFDs). Our primary goals were to identify patterns in overt features of WFDs and to extend our understanding of this clinical profile by focusing on aspects of stuttering that lie beneath the surface. Method Analyses explored the patterns and distributions of the child's observable stuttering behaviors, in addition to his awareness, perceptions, and subjective experience of stuttering. Results Findings indicated that the WFD profile consists of relatively consistent and distinct overt features. We also found that, in many ways, the child perceived the impact of his disfluencies much like other children who stutter, even though his disfluencies manifested in a less common form. Conclusion Findings suggest the need for increased awareness of the varied forms stuttering may take in order to ensure accurate diagnosis, clear communication to clients and parents, and timely access to appropriate intervention.

Abstract Members of the whey acidic protein (WAP) or WAP four-disulfide-core (WFDC) family of proteins are a relatively under-explored family of low molecular weight proteins. The two most prominent WFDC proteins, secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor (SLPI) and elafin (or the precursor, trappin-2), have been shown to possess multiple functions including anti-protease, anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties. It is therefore of no surprise that both SLPI and elafin/trappin-2 have been developed as potential therapeutics. Given the abundance of SLPI and elafin/trappin-2 in the human lung, most work in the area of WFDC research has focused on the role of WFDC proteins in protecting the lung from proteolytic attack. In this review, we will outline the current evidence regarding the expanding role of WFDC protein function with a focus on WFDC activity in lung disease as well as emerging data regarding the function of some of the more recently described WFDC proteins.

Abstract The moisture modifies the characteristics of heat transfer in building envelopes. Multiple factors, including the distinct hygric properties of various material, gravity, etc., affect the moisture content, resulting in a non-uniform distribution of water vapour in different parts of the envelope (e.g. column, beam, the main part of exterior walls). Usually, the more water vapour in a material, the higher the thermal conductivity, resulting in more heat transfers here. Moreover, condensation easily occurs where there is wet, marking such parts have risks both on structural safety and mould growth. The wall-to-floor thermal bridge (WFTB) occupies the largest area among all kinds of thermal bridges that formed by frame structures. In this study, we aimed to quantify the influence on heat loss through WFTB when the moisture transfer in envelopes is considered. The average apparent thermal resistance of WFTB (R TB, ave) was defined to access the insulation performance of WFTB in practical application. The results of transient numerical simulation indicated that when the moisture transfer is considered, the insulation performance of building envelopes decreases significantly, while the adverse effect of WFTB on heat insulation becomes less pronounced. The results indicated that the measures of insulation for WFTB should be reconsidered when the moisture transfer is considered.

Public interest in popular diets is increasing, in particular whole-food plant-based (WFPB) and vegan diets. Whether these diets, as theoretically implemented, meet current food-based and nutrient-based recommendations has not been evaluated in detail. Self-identified WFPB and vegan diet followers in the Adhering to Dietary Approaches for Personal Taste (ADAPT) Feasibility Survey reported their most frequently used sources of information on nutrition and cooking. Thirty representative days of meal plans were created for each diet. Weighted mean food group and nutrient levels were calculated using the Nutrition Data System for Research (NDSR) and data were compared to DRIs and/or USDA Dietary Guidelines/MyPlate meal plan recommendations. The calculated HEI-2015 scores were 88 out of 100 for both WFPB and vegan meal plans. Because of similar nutrient composition, only WFPB results are presented. In comparison to MyPlate, WFPB meal plans provide more total vegetables (180%), green leafy vegetables (238%), legumes (460%), whole fruit (100%), whole grains (132%), and less refined grains (−74%). Fiber level exceeds the adequate intakes (AI) across all age groups. WFPB meal plans failed to meet the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA)s for vitamin B12 and D without supplementation, as well as the RDA for calcium for women aged 51–70. Individuals who adhere to WFBP meal plans would have higher overall dietary quality as defined by the HEI-2015 score as compared to typical US intakes with the exceptions of calcium for older women and vitamins B12 and D without supplementation. Future research should compare actual self-reported dietary intakes to theoretical targets.

Objectives: In military settings, utilizing warm fresh whole blood (WFWB) was associated with reduced mortality; however, there are multiple challenges for administering WFWB to civilians. The authors aimed to determine barriers to hospital employees emergently donating to civilian WFWB programs.Methods: We surveyed hospital employee willingness to donate emergently, familiarity with blood donation, and queried baseline demographics. The electronic survey was disseminated to a random sample of employees. Descriptive and univariate analyses were performed.Results: Three thousand surveys were sent; 883 were returned (28 percent). The majority of respondents were female (n = 630, 71 percent). Respondent familiarity with WFWB donation included very/somewhat familiar (n = 381, 43 percent) and somewhat-not/notat- all familiar (n = 356, 40 percent). Most were definitely or somewhat willing to emergently donate (n = 660, 75 percent). Four hundred and sixty would drive from home to donate (52 percent). The majority worked day-time shifts (n = 754, 85 percent). In regards to donation history, 366 (41 percent) had donated blood more than ten times, but 138 (16 percent) had never donated. Barriers to emergent donation were identified (55 percent), with the most common being childcare responsibilities (n = 242; 27 percent).Conclusions: Hospital employees are willing to donate WFWB emergently, but program implementation must address donor availability and logistical barriers. Future research should assess feasibility of a civilian WFWB program by determining regulatory challenges, development of a quality system for emergency donations, assessment of optimal workforce structure, potential impact to the general blood inventory, as well as patient and community perspectives regarding untested blood units.

WFDC (whey/four-disulfide core)-domain-containing proteins are defined by the possession of one or more 40–50 amino acid domains that include eight conserved cysteine residues linked by four characteristic intramolecular disulfide bonds. Some also contain other structural domains, whereas in many the WFDC-domain is the only domain present. The WFDC-domain is not limited to mammals but is widespread across all lineages. There is increasing evidence to suggest that mammalian WFDC-domain-containing proteins are undergoing rapid molecular evolution and as might be expected they exhibit low levels of sequence similarity coupled with multiple examples of species-specific gene acquisition and gene loss. The characteristic structural domain (that is generally encoded by a single exon) makes these proteins relatively easy to identify in databases. This review will outline the repertoire of such domains within the mouse, but similar principles can be applied to the identification of all proteins within individual species.

Background: Wooden foreign bodies (WFB) are usually not detectable on radiography. Ultrasound is a useful tool for detection and localization of WFB. Objectives: We evaluated the efficacy of tissue harmonic sonography in detection of WFB and describe the imaging features of WFB on tissue harmonic imaging. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 28 patients with history of wooden (wood/thorn/bamboo) foreign body prick with tissue harmonic sonography. Results: The WFB was detected on ultrasonography in all 28 patients (100%) which was confirmed on surgery or follow up study. All WFB were echogenic casting strong posterior acoustic shadowing with or without surrounding hypoechoic halo. Додаток дозволяє переглядати сигнали, анотації до них, а також скачувати потрібні записи при підключенні, до мережі Інтернет. Програма здійснює перетворення, сигналу з формату EDF та CSV формату PhysioNet. Для створення додатка використовується мова програмування Python. Як середовище програмування вибрана Jupiter Notebook. Для взаємодії з сигналами до проекту підключена бібліотека Waveform Database Library. The subject of the study is the development of a program that allows you to interact with the physiological signals of the PysioNet format. The application allows you to view signals, annotations to them, and download the required entries when connected to the Internet. The program converts the signal from the EDF format and the CSV format to PhysioNet. The Python programming language was used to create the application. Jupiter Notebook was choose as the programming environment. The Waveform Database Library library was connected to the project to interact with the signals. SLPI and elafin are members of the whey acidic protein (WAP) four disulphide core (WFDC} family of proteins and have multiple contributions to innate host defence including inhibition of neutrophil serine proteases, antimicrobial properties and inhibition of the inflammatory response to LPS. This research aimed to investigate novel functions of WAP2 and eppin, two lesser characterised WFDC proteins that are found expressed in the lung. Recombinant expression and purification of WAP2 were first optimised in E. coli for use in a range of functional assays. Recombinant WAP2 inhibited cathepsin G protease activity. Monocytic cells pre-treated with recombinant WAP2 before LPS stimulation produced significantly lower levels of IL-8 and MCP-l compared to cells stimulated with LPS alone. Recombinant WAP2 became conjugated to fibronectin in a transglutaminase-mediated reaction and retained antiprotease activity. WAP2 was detected at variable levels in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from cystic fibrosis patients. WAP2 and eppin were both shown by immunohistochemistry to be expressed in epithelial and immune cells of the lung. Eppin exerted potent antibacterial effects against the lung-colonising bacteria P. aeruginosa and S. aureus, in contrast to WAP2 which was ineffective. Together these results suggest a role for both WAP2 and eppin in the innate host response. Further characterisation is required to fully understand the range and implications of their physiological functions.

Resumo: O epidídimo é responsável por transformar os espermatozoides imaturos em células funcionalmente competentes, capazes de adquirir motilidade progressiva e de reconhecer e fertilizar o oócito. Além disso, o epidídimo é primordial para proteger e armazenar o gameta masculino antes da ejaculação. Alterações da fisiologia epididimária podem afetar a sua função, causando infertilidade masculina. A inflamação do epidídimo, conhecida como epididimite, é uma das doenças mais prevalentes do trato urogenital masculino, sendo um fator relevante de infertilidade masculina. Sua principal etiologia envolve a invasão de bactérias, como Escherichia coli, via ascensão retrógrada pela uretra. O epidídimo expressa constitutivamente diversos componentes do sistema imunológico inato, incluindo os receptores do tipo Toll (TLRs), como o TLR4, que é ativado pelo lipopolissacarídeo (LPS) de bactérias Gram-negativas, além de proteínas com atividade antimicrobiana, como os inibidores da protease do tipo WFDC (Whey-acidic protein four disufide core), indicando que este órgão está em constante estado de alerta para combater infecções bacterianas. Abstract: The epididymis is responsible for transforming immature sperm into functionally competent cells capable of acquiring progressive motility and recognizing and fertilizing the oocyte. In addition, the epididymis is paramount for protecting and storing the male gamete before ejaculation. Changes in epididymal physiology may affect sperm maturation, transport or storage, causing male infertility. Epididymal inflammation, known as epididymitis, is one of the most prevalent diseases of the male urogenital tract, being a relevant factor of male infertility. Its main etiology involves the invasion of bacteria, such as E. coli, through retrograde ascension through the urethra. The epididymis constitutively expresses several elements of the innate immune system, including Toll-like receptors (TLRs), like the TLR4, which is activated by the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of Gram-negative bacteria, as well as proteins with antimicrobial activity, like the WFDC (Whey-acidic difulfide core)-type protease inhibitors, indicating that this organ is constantly alert to fight bacterial infections. In addition to antimicrobial and protease inhibitory activities, WFDC proteins show anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and reproductive functions, being multifunctional proteins in the male reproductive tract. Diplomová práce popisuje metodiku výpočtů částí náchylných k rozvoji mnoho-ohniskového únavového poškození (WFD). Nejdříve se práce zabývá rozborem předpisů letové způsobilosti souvisejících s WFD pro letadla certifikovaných podle FAR 23 v kategorii commuter. Následuje popis metodiky únavového výpočtu a predikce šíření trhliny. Dále jsou popsány řešení pro výpočet faktoru intenzity napětí pro základné konfigurace trhliny, tam kde to bylo možné v uzavřeném tvaru, jinak ve formě tabulky. Hlavní částí práce je návrh algoritmu AIMA schopného provést kompletní analýzu části náchylné k rozvoji únavového poškození na více místech (MSD). Model se validoval únavovou zkouškou vzorku přeplátovaného spoje dolního panelu křídla. Následně byla analyzována reálná konstrukce spoje dolních panelů křídla letounu L 410 NG.

Natural Resource Management processes are undergoing major transformations: technical and regulatory mechanisms are no longer considered sufficiently adaptive to address the complexity and uncertainty which characterise contemporary challenges in the sector, thus motivating wider use of integrated and collaborative approaches. Against this background, new models of participative management are encouraged which emphasise social learning among stakeholders. Yet, reported research which unambiguously demonstrates the role and impact of social learning remains sparse. This thesis contributes to a better understanding of the conditions under which social learning occurs, and most importantly the dynamics and benefits of social learning by systematically collecting evidence of the processes and impacts attributed to social learning. The research which employs a sequential mixed methods research design is undertaken with stakeholders involved in various engagement activities forming part of the implementation of the WFD in the UK, Ireland, and Germany and expands the still limited empirical knowledge base on social leaning in stakeholder interaction. Findings demonstrate that participatory platforms are shaped by processes of social learning although they are more noticeable as collaborative initiatives mature. Also, there is some degree of variation in the extent to which people learn or change, with stakeholders readily acquiring knowledge and improving relationships. However, the transformation of views and the development of a shared group identity seem to be limited. Findings clearly illustrate the multitude of factors that constrain the occurrence of learning processes and eventually limit the extent to which these can contribute to sustainable NRM. Of all natural resources, water is particularly under pressure due to its intensive use. Therefore, it is vital to better understand the decision-making processes that could reverse trends in environmental deterioration. Policy appraisal tools can help decision makers develop sustainable public policies, as they support evidence-based policy choices. In practice, however, they are rarely used as a basis for decisions. In this context, this PhD has aimed to answer the following research question: How can we explain the different uses of policy appraisal - in particular of economic analysis – beyond evidence-based policy making in water decision making? To this end, I studied the case of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) (2000/60/EC) and the use of cost-benefit analysis in its application in the United Kingdom and France, as recent examples in which economic-based policy appraisal plays, in principle, a key role. I showed that appraisal tools could reflect political objectives and environmental policy ambitions in two ways. Firstly in the choice of the appraisal tool itself, which follows a specific logic. Secondly, the operationalisation of the tool selected may be influenced by political goals. As a consequence, the use of policy appraisal for evidence-based decision making can partly be explained by the discrepancy between the output of the appraisal and the political objectives pursued. More generally, I found that the politics stream – i.e. the political context - determines the presence and importance of appraisal tools in the policy process and explains further uses, in particular in problem definition and policy formulation. I also provided an empirical contribution to the knowledge on WFD implementation in member states. I explained the process of setting objectives and exemptions in two member states, and the role that economic analysis played in the decision-making process. I showed that ambitions related to the implementation of the WFD, and the political context more generally, shaped the decisions on the analytical tools used and that choices made in the operationalisation of these tools partly influenced the protection standards of individual water bodies. These results imply that debates on the use of policy appraisal in WFD implementation should go beyond experts’ circles and be considered in the political sphere.

Gli ecosistemi acquatici sono il comparto ambientale finale per molti contaminanti introdotti nell’ambiente, specialmente per quelli persistenti, provenienti da diverse attività antropiche. Gli organismi acquatici sono esposti simultaneamente a differenti classi di composti chimici e, la loro fisiologia può esserne affetta anche da basse concentrazioni ambientali che ne determinano un effetto a cascata drammatico sull’intero ciclo vitale delle stesse. Per identificare gli effetti ecotossicologici si devono scegliere delle variabili di studio che sono sensibili a cambiamenti di esposizione e quindi possono registrare informazioni a differenti livelli di organizzazione biologica (ad es.: comunità, specie, alterazioni cellulari, molecolari). Il presente lavoro ha come scopo di studiare biomarker biochimici e bioindicatori su invertebrati acquatici capaci di rispondere all’effetto dei contaminanti e predirne il rischio di tossicità, requisito fondamentale dell’attuale legislazione comunitaria ambientale. Questo lavoro, nell’ambito della Water Frame Directive (WFD), affronta questa tematica con diversi tipi di approccio per implementare un sistema di monitorizzazione efficiente. Lo SPEAR ad esempio è in grado di diagnosticare la contaminazione di ecosistemi acquatici da pesticidi operando a livello di comunità di invertebrati acquatici. Inoltre si sono presi in considerazione anche biomarker a livello cellulare in bivalvi (Tapes philipphinarum and Mya arenaria): attività enzimatiche coinvolti nelle risposte aerobiche (CCO) e antiossidative (SOD and CAT), risposte genotossicologiche come la frequenza dei micronuclei, e, infine, a livello di organismo, risposte di carattere comportamentale.
Aquatic ecosystems are the final sink for most of contaminants introduced in the environment, especially persistent organic pollutants coming from different human activities. Most of the freshwater and coastal organisms are exposed simultaneously to different classes of chemicals, and their physiology may be affected by toxic chemical even at low environmental concentrations with a cascade event on population dynamics. Identifying ecotoxicological effects requires descriptors that are sensitive to changes in exposure and thus can indicate information at different levels of biological organisation (i.e. communities, sub-individual level). The present work aims to investigate biochemical biomarkers and bioindicators in aquatic invertebrates able to detect biological effects and predict risk of toxicity, with a special focus paid to the requirements of current EU regulation. Therefore, the present work faced on different kinds of approach identified to be efficient tools within the context of the WFD requirements (Water Frame Directive, 2000/60/EC), for investigative and operational monitoring. Work include the SPEAR approach as trait based indicator descriptor of freshwater aquatic macroinvertebrates communities, able to diagnose pesticide contamination in aquatic ecosystems. Further diagnostic approaches in environmental status are included, as assay representing biological responses for different enzymes involved in the aerobic (CCO) and antioxidant responses, (SOD, and CAT), behavioural endpoints, and genotoxicity biomarker associated with micronuclei frequency in bivalve species (Tapes philipphinarum and Mya arenaria).

Increased wildfire activity over the last years has made fire managers to become more concerned about the effectiveness of current fuel treatment practices to reduce fire risk and severity. Fuel treatments lead to changes in the forest structure and therefore modify certain basic parameters that may influence the fire behaviour. The goal of this work is to quantitatively assess the effectiveness of fuel treatments in reducing risk of wildfires spread in some typically Mediterranean forest. Specifically, it envisages to know the characteristics of the fire that can occur in the slash originated from regenerated aleppo pine stands that were thinned after a wildfire and also to know the evolution of slash combustibility after the treatment. First, an extensive literature review has been done, focused mainly on those works that assessed the effectiveness of fuel treatments in reducing the risk of wildfire. Several studies demonstrated the effectiveness of treatments such as prescribed burning or thinning. However, these studies are not consistent about what treatment and slash management technique are the most effective. A study area has been selected and located within the perimeter of a large forest fire occurred in Bages (Central Catalonia, Spain) in 1994 to study the effectiveness of a type of fuel treatment usually performed in the Mediterranean Basin. The site was previously thinned during different periods and the slash was left in, not managed. In this area, the fuel, environment and topographic characteristics have been determined. With the fuel sampling methods used at the site, a protocol has been produced in order to characterize the regenerated aleppo pine stands, useful to obtain the parameters needed to evaluate fire behaviour. Results have led to a new fuel model for regenerated aleppo pine stands and also fuel models for regenerated aleppo pine stands that have been thinned at different times with the slash remaining unmanaged at the site. An experimental burning program has been implemented reproducing two different regenerated structures (6 and 40 months after treatment). With these experiments it has been proved that ex-situ experimentation is not useful to reproduce actual fire situations because it is impossible to repeat faithfully the overall structure of the ecosystem that affect fire behavior. A series of simulations of potential fires that could occur in the study area have been performed, incorporating the determined inputs (environmental conditions and fuel type) and evaluating different simulation tools (NEXUS i WFDS). Results obtained with the two simulations tools used confirm that both tools are reliable. In general values obtained in fireline intensity and rate of spread with WFDS are larger than with NEXUS. Results from simulations of Bages plots carried with both simulation tools generally show that fire behavior is more severe 1 month and 6 months after the treatment. That is, the wildfire effects after the treatment would be worse than in the untreated control plot and that time does not improve this situation, at least six months after treatment. According to the results and given the characteristics of our country where the risk of fires is very high, the effect of thinning treatments performed in central Catalonia after the 1994 fire brings a great fire vulnerability in treated stands, at least during the first months of treatment.

In the frame of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD, 2000/60/EC), a macroalgae based index (CARLIT) was applied along the Sicilian coastal water bodies (WBs) in order to assess for the first time their ecological status and collect accurate information on the distribution and abundance of shallow-water communities, especially of those most sensitive. The ecological quality ratio values, sensu WFD, showed “high”/“good” levels in all WBs with lushy forests of Cystoseira amentacea except two with “moderate” level due to the presence of stress-tolerant species related to local factors.

The present paper aims to assess for the first time the ecological status of the Sicilian water bodies using the PREI (Posidonia oceanica Rapid Easy Index) method according to the Water Framework Directive (WFD, 2000/60/EC) requirements. The PREI is based on five metrics: shoot density, shoot leaf surface area, E/L ratio, depth of lower limit, and type of this lower limit. Monitoring of the 29 P. oceanica meadows allowed to classify the 20 WBs of Sicilian coasts in the first two levels of status: 10 as “high” and 10 as “good” with the PREI values ranged between 0,551 and 1.

This paper first reviews the principal monitoring requirements of the WFD and discusses the monitoring network for diffuse pollution in Albania in the context of implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD). Considerations on water quality of surface waters from main Albanian rivers based on ecological and chemicals indicators are reported. Quality measurement are essential to demonstrate the comparability of obtained data and they form the basis for correct decisions related to management of water resources. The existing surface water quality monitoring network provides only restricted information to select between different management options when implementing river basin management plans (RBMP) under the WFD. We then clearly define and exemplify the roles, the functions and the need for a new set of monitoring tools support of implementing the WFD, using the case studies based on datasets that we obtained during recurrent monitoring campaigns in the Rivers Ishmi, Erzeni, Shkumbini and Mati.

This paper is concerned with defining a new Weight Function Based model (WFB), which describes the hyper-elastic materials stress-strain behavior. Numerous hyper-elastic theoretical material models have been proposed over the past 60 years capturing the stress-strain behavior of large deformation incompressible isotropic materials. The newly proposed method has been verified against the historic Treloar’s test data for uni-axial, bi-axial and pure shear loadings of Treloar’s vulcanized rubber material, showing a promising level of confidence compared to the Ogden and the Yeoh methods. A non-linear least square optimization Matlab tool was used to determine the WFB, Yeoh and Ogden models material parameters. A comparison between the results of the three models was performed showing that the newly proposed model is more accurate for uni-axial tension as it has an error value which is less than the Ogden and Yeoh models by 1.0 to 39%. Also, the parameters calculation by more than 95%, for the bi-axial and pure shear loading cases compared to the Ogden model. Natural rubber test specimens have been tensioned using a tensile testing machine and the WFB model was applied to fit the test data results showing a very good curve fitting with an average error of 0.44%.WFB model has reduced processing time for the model.

Pulse jet mixed (PJM) process vessels are being developed for storing, blending, and chemical processing of nuclear waste slurries at the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) to be built at Hanford, Washington. These waste slurries exhibit variable process feed characteristics including Newtonian to non-Newtonian rheologies over a range of solids loadings. Waste feed to the WTP from the Hanford Tank Farms will be accomplished via the Waste Feed Delivery (WFD) system which includes million-gallon underground storage double-shell tanks (DSTs) with dual-opposed jet mixer pumps. Experience using WFD type jet mixer pumps to mobilize actual Hanford waste in DSTs may be used to establish design threshold criteria of interest to pulse jet mixed process vessel operation. This paper describes a method to evaluate the pulse jet mixed vessel capability to process waste based on information obtained during mobilizing and suspending waste by the WFD system jet mixer pumps in a DST. Calculations of jet velocity and wall shear stress in a specific pulse jet mixed process vessel were performed using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. The CFD-modelled process vessel consists of a 4.9-m- (16-ft-) diameter tank with a 2:1 semi-elliptical head, a single, 10-cm (4-in.) downward facing 60-degree conical nozzle, and a 0.61-m (24-in.) inside diameter PJM. The PJM is located at 70% of the vessel radius with the nozzle stand-off-distance 14 cm (6 in.) above the vessel head. The CFD modeled fluid velocity and wall shear stress can be used to estimate vessel waste-processing performance by comparison to available actual WFD system process data. Test data from the operation of jet mixer pumps in the 23-m (75-ft) diameter DSTs have demonstrated mobilization, solid particles in a sediment matrix were moved from their initial location, and suspension, mobilized solid particles were moved to a higher elevation in the vessel than their initial location, of waste solids. Jet mixer pumps were used in Hanford waste tank 241-AZ-101, and at least 95% of the 0.46-m (18-in.) deep sediment, with a shear strength of 1,500 to 4,200 Pa, was mobilized. Solids with a median particle size of 43 μm, 90th percentile of 94 μm, were suspended in tank 241-AZ-101 to at least 5.5 m (216 in.) above the vessel bottom. Analytical calculations for this jet mixer pump test were used to estimate the velocities and wall shear stress that mobilized and suspended the waste. These velocities and wall shear stresses provide design threshold criteria which are metrics for system performance that can be evaluated via testing. If the fluid motion in a specific pulse jet mixed process vessel meets or exceeds the fluid motion of the demonstrated performance in the WFD system, confidence is provided that that vessel will similarly mobilize and suspend those solids if they were within the WTP. The single PJM CFD-calculated jet velocity and wall shear stress compare favorably with the design threshold criterion estimated for the tank 241-AZ-101 process data. Therefore, for both mobilization and suspension, the performance data evaluated from the WFD system testing increases confidence that the performance of the pulse jet mixed process vessels will be sufficient to process that waste even if that waste is not fully characterized.

Анотація:
The objectives defined for this study were to: (1) develop a heat-pulse sensor and a heat-transfer model for leaching measurement, and (2) conduct laboratory study of the sensor and the methodology to estimate leaching flux. In this study we investigated the feasibility for estimating leachate fluxes with a newly designed heat-pulse (HP) sensor, combining water flux density (WFD) with electrical conductivity (EC) measurements in the same sensor. Whereas previous studies used the conventional heat pulse sensor for these measurements, the focus here was to estimate WFD with a robust sensor, appropriate for field settings, having thick-walled large-diameter probes that would minimize their flexing during and after installation and reduce associated errors. The HP method for measuring WFD in one dimension is based on a three-rod arrangement, aligned in the direction of the flow (vertical for leaching). A heat pulse is released from a center rod and the temperature response is monitored with upstream (US) and downstream (DS) rods. Water moving through the soil caries heat with it, causing differences in temperature response at the US and DS locations. Appropriate theory (e.g., Ren et al., 2000) is then used to determine WFD from the differences in temperature response. In this study, we have constructed sensors with large probes and developed numerical and analytical solutions for approximating the measurement. One-dimensional flow experiments were conducted with WFD ranging between 50 and 700 cm per day. A numerical model was developed to mimic the measurements, and also served for the evaluation of the analytical solution. For estimation WFD, and analytical model was developed to approximate heat transfer in this setting. The analytical solution was based on the work of Knight et al. (2012) and Knight et al. (2016), which suggests that the finite properties of the rods can be captured to a large extent by assuming them to be cylindrical perfect conductors. We found that: (1) the sensor is sensitive for measuring WFD in the investigated range, (2) the numerical model well-represents the sensor measurement, and (2) the analytical approximation could be improved by accounting for water and heat flow divergence by the large rods.
