Анотація:

L’édition de la correspondance conjugale entre Jean Schlumberger (1877-1968) et Suzanne Weyher (1878-1924), échangée entre 1899 et 1912, est un document polymorphe ouvert à de multiples usages. D’abord, cette relation épistolaire sert l’histoire des mentalités, car les lettres privées nous font découvrir les jeunes partenaires protestants, à l’aube de leurs fiançailles, puis de leur mariage et nous disent comment ils s’inscrivent dans leur univers social bourgeois. En cela, les missives sont un document historique sur la société bourgeoise de la fin XIXe – début XXe siècle. Ainsi, les 539 lettres reproduites dans la présente édition révèlent tout un pan du passé. Ensuite, ego-document, la lettre est archive du moi. À la manière de Marie-Claire Grassi, nous avons privilégié une « approche monographique sur longue durée », afin de mettre « en évidence l’évolution des sentiments à l’intérieur d[u] couple », en tentant de répondre à la question : l’homme et la femme parlent-ils le même langage ? Cela nous a permis d’affirmer que l’échange épistolaire entre Jean et Suzanne Schlumberger est d’abord un exemple de correspondance amoureuse. Chacun à leur manière, par la narration de la vie de tous les jours, les deux scripteurs « ordonnent et reconstruisent de manière implicite le paysage amoureux ». Au rythme des lettres d’amour, le canal épistolaire devient le lieu par excellence où se construit la sphère familiale, puisque les deux individus deviennent parents. À travers ces extraits de vie que sont les témoignages épistolaires, se constitue une illustration de l’Histoire de la maternité et de la paternité dans un contexte législatif particulier, où la femme est sous le joug du Code Napoléon. Réflexions et pensées autour de ces bouleversements de vie, à la fois intersubjectifs et sociaux, donnent à voir les nouveaux parents essayant de se définir dans leur singularité, entre tradition et modernité. Conjugale, familiale, la relation épistolaire de Jean et Suzanne Schlumberger est aussi artistique. S’affranchissant tous deux d’une éducation commune prohibitive et mus par des idées avancées, les époux s’épanouissent progressivement dans leur art respectif, Jean l’écriture, Suzanne la peinture. Outils privilégiés d’une étude interactionniste entre l’être humain et l’œuvre, les lettres conjugales sont autant de signes qui font sens et illustrent l’histoire intime de deux artistes. Même si Jean Schlumberger affirmait à son amie Aline Mayrisch avoir « jalousement gardé » sa vie privée à l’écart de sa vie littéraire, la correspondance intime et artistique, mêle pourtant, au cœur même des lettres de Jean, le récit de ses rencontres professionnelles, publiques, qui sont engrais pour l’histoire littéraire de l’époque. Et pour cause, à mesure que se développe la carrière d’écrivain de Jean Schlumberger ainsi que sa place, qui devait être cruciale au sein de La Nouvelle Revue Française, la correspondance privée, pourtant par définition close sur elle-même, s’ouvre au monde littéraire. Les notions oxymoriques « privé » et « public » s’entrechoquent au cœur de la correspondance du couple Schlumberger, nous faisant découvrir le rôle minime mais inconnu, de Suzanne au sein de l’entreprise éditoriale qu’est La Nouvelle Revue Française. Dans les lettres de Jean Schlumberger, la frontière, de plus en plus frêle entre intérieur et extérieur s’étiole davantage face à la présence, exponentielle, du futur prix Nobel de littérature (1947), André Gide, empiétant sur la légitimité épistolaire de Suzanne. Celle-ci adopte alors de nouvelles stratégies énonciatives et fait de son amitié avec Madeleine Gide, la marraine de Sabine Schlumberger, un nouveau duo énonciatif rendant le discours épistolaire, polyphonique. Les lettres sont le miroir des relations littéraires et artistiques de l’époque. La correspondance des époux Schlumberger a donc de multiples intérêts, d’ordre historique, sociologique, biographique, psychologique, générique, littéraire et artistique
The edition of the marital correspondence between Jean Schlumberger (1877-1968) and Suzanne Weyher (1878-1924), exchanged between 1899 and 1912, is a polymorphic document open to multiple uses. First of all, this epistolary relationship serves the history of mentalities, as private letters introduce us to the young Protestant partners, at the dawn of their engagement and then their marriage, and tell us how they fit into their bourgeois social universe. In this respect, the missives are a historical document on bourgeois society at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Thus, the 539 letters reproduced in the present edition reveal a whole section of the past. Then, ego-document, the letter is an archive of the self. In the manner of Marie-Claire Grassi, we have favoured a "long-term monographic approach" in order to "highlight the evolution of feelings within [a] couple", trying to answer the question : do men and women speak the same language ? This allowed us to affirm that the epistolary exchange between Jean and Suzanne Schlumberger is first of all an example of love correspondence. Each in their own way, through the narration of everyday life, the two writers "implicitly order and reconstruct the landscape of love". To the rhythm of the love letters, the epistolary channel becomes the place par excellence where the family sphere is built, since the two individuals become parents. Through these extracts of life that are the epistolary testimonies, an illustration of the History of motherhood and fatherhood in a particular legislative context, where women are under the yoke of the Napoleonic Code, is constituted. Reflections and thoughts on these life upheavals, both intersubjective and social, show new parents trying to define themselves in their singularity, between tradition and modernity. Conjugal, familial, the epistolary relationship of Jean and Suzanne Schlumberger is also artistic. Both freeing themselves from a prohibitive common education and driven by advanced ideas, the spouses gradually blossomed in their respective art, Jean writing, Suzanne painting. Privileged tools of an interactionist study between the human being and the work, the conjugal letters are as many signs that make sense and illustrate the intimate history of two artists. Even if Jean Schlumberger told his friend Aline Mayrisch that he had "jealously guarded" his private life away from his literary life, the intimate and artistic correspondence nevertheless blends, at the very heart of Jean's letters, the account of his professional and public encounters, which are fertilizer for the literary history of the time. And for good reason, as Jean Schlumberger's career as a writer developed and his place, which was to be crucial within La Nouvelle Revue Française, private correspondence, though by definition closed in on itself, opened up to the literary world. The oxymoronic notions of "private" and "public" collide at the heart of the Schlumberger couple's correspondence, making us discover Suzanne's minimal but unknown role within the editorial enterprise that is La Nouvelle Revue Française. In Jean Schlumberger's letters, the increasingly frail boundary between inside and outside is further weakened by the exponential presence of the future Nobel Prize winner for literature (1947), André Gide, encroaching on Suzanne's epistolary legitimacy. Suzanne then adopted new enunciative strategies and turned her friendship with Madeleine Gide, Sabine Schlumberger's godmother, into a new enunciative duo that made the epistolary discourse polyphonic. The letters mirror the literary and artistic relationships of the time. The correspondence of the Schlumberger couple therefore has multiple interests, historical, sociological, biographical, psychological, generic, literary and artistic

Анотація:

La tesis que se presenta, titulada "Azcárraga-Weyler y la conducción de la Guerra de Cuba", examina en profundidad la organización y funcionamiento del Ejercito español en Cuba durante el mando de Weyler. A partir de una labor de crítica y documentación, se han buscado también las razones por las que existe disparidad entre los datos que ofrecen las distintas fuentes sobre combatientes, bajas y repatriados, para llegar a nuevas conclusiones aprovechando la correspondencia de Azcárraga con Weyler. Partiendo del análisis de la organización del Ejército y de su evolución se deducen aspectos similares a los de la Gestión de Empresas, pudiendo establecerse cierto paralelismo entre ellas, y adoptar una visión crítica. El examen de la correspondencia de Azcárraga con Weyler, que es inédita y tiene un carácter reservado -no estando destinada a darle publicidad- aporta datos importantes para nuevos planteamientos. Por último, en la tesis se hace un estudio crítico de la obra de Weyler "Mi mando en Cuba", que en el futuro podrá ser estudiado de una manera distinta, detectando los errores que se han producido. El conjunto de mapas que se aportan aumenta considerablemente los conocimientos tanto de la organización en la época de Weyler como de los enfrentamientos con los mambises con el fin de comprender mejor los hechos que se van produciendo durante la guerra.

Northern European and Italian Renaissance art have tended to be treated art historically as two opposing styles. Rooted in statements by artists such as Michelangelo and Leon Battista Alberti, it has become a common misconception that Italians did not hold Northern European art in high regard during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. This thesis seeks to complicate and critique this conventional understanding by looking at the similarities and transalpine exchanges between the artistic styles and practices of Rogier van der Weyden (c. 1400-1464) of Brussels and Cosmè Tura (c. 1430-1495) of Ferrara. By looking at the writings of contemporary humanists at the Ferrarese court and technical analysis of select paintings, it is evident that Cosmè Tura strove to emulate and incorporate aspects of Rogier van der Weyden’s northern manner, especially in his handling of oil paint, use of underdrawings, and emotive effects. By reconsidering this cross-cultural relationship, this thesis demonstrates that the traditionally constructed animosity between Northern and Southern Renaissance art is a common misperception and a oversight in art history.

Анотація:

The Concord Sonata by Charles Edward lves (1874-1954) concerns the musical representation of the writers R.W. Emerson, N. Hawthorne, Bronson and Louisa May Alcott, and H. Thoreau, who lived and worked in Concord, Massachusetts, during 1840- 1860. The composer has set out a detailed programme for the sonata in his Essays before a sonata to inform the interpreter as to what his impression of these writers entails. This programme also presents philosophical ideas to be realized musically and two questions are subsequently raised: *How can the Essays assist the pianist to gain a better understanding of the programme? *What musical devices in the score can be associated with the programmatic ideas in the Essays? The aim of this study is to determine how the Essays before a sonata can enhance the performer's insight regarding the interpretation of the Concord Sonata. Ives' aesthetical ideas are linked with both the programme of the composition and the techniques used to realise it. The hypothesis holds that lves has mediated in his Essays before a sonata between an artistic and analytical approach to the Concord Sonata, especially where the abstract ideas of the programme are concerned. A model was developed to investigate lves' unique realization of the sonata form. In the course of the work he combined a cumulative structure and a crystallizing technique to issue in the most important theme. The "human-faith-melody" emerges fully in the third movement and becomes the transcendental tune in the last, played by a flute. Other musical devices incorporated in the model include lves' use of quotation, fragmentation, polistylistic writing, and the cyclic principle. His collage technique demonstrates the characteristics of the transcendental writers (i.e. quotation, reiteration, parody, aphorisms, rhetoric, a deep respect for and interest in nature, and an inherent heterogeneous style). This multi-dimensional writing constitutes a significant ambiguity that enables lves to communicate a philosophical message of the eminent and influential transcendental writers, which he revered.

Delays in seeking effective treatment for tuberculosis increase the level of disease morbidity and mortality rate as well as the risk of its transmission in the community (WHO, 2006b). In Somalia, Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the greatest health threats as it is the leading cause of death in the economically active age groups and in people living with HIV/AIDS (WHO, 2004). This study was carried out with the aim of determining factors influencing delays in seeking TB treatment in Belet-Weyne district.

Rogier van der Weyden's Miraflores Altarpiece (c. 1440) was installed in the Carthusian Monastery of Miraflores, Castile, during a period when early rosary meditation cycles were gaining popularity, particularly amongst Carthusians. This previously unexplored historical context offers a rationale for the innovative iconographic content and structure of the work, as well as for the ways in which it had meaning for its viewers. Like early rosary meditations, the Miraflores Altarpiece combines diverse meditational cycles including life of Christ and the Virgin narratives with the tripartite division of the Marian Psalter. The altarpiece has much in common with the later standardized form of the rosary, which indicates that this format had much earlier roots than had been thought previously. The Miraflores Altarpiece contributes to our understanding of the way visual media participated in the rosary tradition, and of the ways that tradition developed and changed over the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

The asbestos mining industry has left a legacy of pollution that continues to poison former mining areas and surrounding land – posing a significant health risk to local communities. The rehabilitation of sites disturbed by mining activities, aims to negate the adverse effects associated with these post-mining landscapes and to achieve the return of a disturbed site to a degree of its former state or to a sustainable usable condition. In order to assist the effective rehabilitation of derelict and ownerless asbestos mines it was critical to develop a scientific database to indicate the status of rehabilitation at specific sites. The Rehabilitation Prioritisation Index (RPI) was developed in 2007 to indicate the sequence for rehabilitation of asbestos pollution by quantifying the risk associated with a specific pollution site. The use of the RPI has been implemented by the South African Department of Minerals and Energy as part of an integrated approach towards the rehabilitation of the asbestos legacies of the past. In this study, a multidisciplinary approach was applied to sites in three provinces as identified in the RPI, to facilitate the development of the Rehabilitation Monitoring Index (RMI). It is envisioned that this index, as part of a larger monitoring database, would assist in the successful monitoring and long-term rehabilitation of asbestos mines. During the monitoring process, the most prominent aspects governing the rehabilitation process were identified from comprehensive assessments of quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative parameters included cover depth, physical and chemical soil properties, soil microbial activity, vegetation properties and small mammal surveys. Qualitative data included the footprint area, land use, erosion or flood damage, secondary pollution and water control structure damage. From the quantitative data, those parameters which had the greatest influence on the rehabilitation process were identified. In order of most to least important these groups were analysed by multivariate statistical ordination and classified into four groups: success parameters > essentials to be addressed > reasons for failure > non-distinguishable entities. The qualitative data indicated that the Limpopo Province was in the highest state of degradation after rehabilitation and that site history plays an important role in rehabilitation planning. Quantitative and qualitative parameters were assessed for all sites and applied in the RMI as weighted factors from which the rehabilitation status of a specific site can be calculated. Qualitative data was given a weight of 25% and quantitative data a weight of 75%. RMI values were calculated for each parameter and sites were distributed across a range which classifies the sites according to their rehabilitation status. Once again the Limpopo Province was identified as the province with the least successful rehabilitation. The results from this investigation show that a multidisciplinary approach is a step in the right direction for the successful monitoring of rehabilitated post-mining sites such as asbestos mines. It is however necessary that the RMI must be validated and the weights allocated to qualitative parameters must be reconsidered for the future development of this tool. While the RPI and RMI cannot be compared directly, it might be of great revelation to reassess the RPI values of all the sites after rehabilitation and compare this data to the RMI values.
