The original m-consecutive-k-out-of-n:F system, which was first proposed by Griffith, consists of n components arranged in a line, where the system fails if and only if there are at least m non-overlapping runs of consecutive k failed components. Later some variants or extensions of the system model are proposed and studied. For example, Eryilmaz and Mahmoud’s model considers overlapping runs of failed components; Kamalja and Amrutkar’s model considers weighted components. Recently, Cui considers both linear and circular models where the components are arranged in a line or on a circle. Though there may be overlapping runs of failed components, weighted components are not considered in Cui’s model. In this paper, we use a general model to study the reliability of m-consecutive-k-out-of-n:F system where all components are weighted, there may be overlapping runs of failed components, and components can be arranged in a line or on a circle. Based on heterogeneous Markov chains, we develop efficient algorithms for reliability of the generalized model. In addition, the algorithms can also be applied to compute Marginal Reliability Importance (MRI) and Joint Reliability Importance (JRI) for components very efficiently.
