This article addresses the question of whether an introductory programming course can be taught using a Visual Language (Visual Basic) without compromising students' understanding of programming design concepts. One group of students took an introductory programming course using a text-based programming language (Qbasic) and a second group took the same course using a visual programming language (Visual Basic). At the end of the semester the two groups were compared on their understanding of the programming design concepts of sequence, selection, iteration, variables, and arrays. Based on this study with eighty-nine students, Visual Basic students master the programming design concepts at least as well as traditional BASIC students and in some cases better. Visual Basic appears to be an excellent choice for a first programming course.

Computer Aided Design systems provide tools for building and manipulating models of solid objects. Some also provide access to programming languages so that parametrised designs can be expressed. There is a sharp distinction, therefore, between building models, a concrete graphical editing activity, and programming, an abstract, textual, algorithm-construction activity. The recently proposed Language for Structured Design (LSD) was motivated by a desire to combine the design and programming activities in one language. LSD achieves this by extending a visual logic programming language to incorporate the notions of solids and operations on solids. Here we investigate another aspect of the LSD approach, namely, that by using visual logic programming as the engine to drive the parametrised assembly of objects, we also gain the powerful symbolic problem-solving capability that is the forté of logic programming languages. This allows the designer/programmer to work at a higher level, giving declarative specifications of a design in order to obtain the design descriptions. Hence LSD integrates problem solving, design synthesis, and prototype assembly in a single homogeneous programming/design environment. We demonstrate this specification-to-final-assembly capability using the masterkeying problem for designing systems of locks and keys.

ArcGIS and AutoCAD Map 3D are both geographic information system (GIS) software. Both are used worldwide in many countries and companies. The dataflow design in visual editors is suitable for daily work. Visual languages are valuable for wide user community. Dataflow design automatizes typical GIS tasks and makes the processes universal. It is possible to construct simple or complex workflows with a visual editor in both software. The concept of visual programming is highly acceptable for GIS users because they think spatially and graphically. The article presented practical example for automatic finding of suitable area for construction of new hotel. Two data flow diagrams for the same task demonstrate the differences between graphical notations in ArcGIS and AutoCAD Map.

Modularisation is a well-known method of reducing code complexity, yet architects are unlikely to modularise their visual scripts. In this paper the impact that modules used in visual scripts have on the architectural design process is investigated with regard to legibility, collaboration, reuse and design modification. Through a series of thinking-aloud interviews, and through the collaborative design and construction of the parametric Dermoid pavilion, modules are found to impact the culture of collaborative design in architecture through relatively minor alterations to how architects organise visual scripts.

Radar data processing software is a complex system, which has been implemented with mixed language programming using Visual Studio .Net and Visual C++6.0. COM-based software architecture for radar data processing system is proposed in this paper. It provides modular design framework, and integrates modules developed with different programming language and ready-made modules. Firstly, introduce COM technology in brief, then design radar data processing software system framework, finally show the programming examples to explain how to define and refer the COM interfaces. The results show that using COM-based modular mixed language programming is an effective method to realize the radar data processing software system.

This article describes an easy programming language training activity for beginners, namelyVisual Basic for Applications (VBA)-Ms. Excel training.The advantage of this programming language iseasy to operate because manystudentsor employees are very familiar with Ms. Excel so that the adaptation process will be easy. The results of the post-test training that was attended bystudents showed a significant increase in the ability to design programming languages.

This article discusses the design and implementation of a new programming tool for Greek novices as a means to improve introductory programing instruction in Greece. We implemented Koios, a new highly interactive and visual programming tool for Greek novices, based on the body of research in the field of psychology of programming. The main contribution of this article is the empirical demonstration of the benefit of this tool in novice programming, compared with two other popular programming tools for Greek novices. The results show that users of Koios performed significantly better than users of the other two programming tools.

The attractiveness of visual programming stems in large part from the direct interaction with program elements as if they were real objects, since people deal better with concrete objects than with the abstract. This paper describes a new graph based software visualization tool for parallel message-passing programming named Visper that combines the levels of abstraction at which message-passing parallel programs are expressed and makes use of compositional programming. Central to the tool is the Process Communication Graph that correlates both the control and data flow graphs into a single graph formalism, without a need for complex textual annotation. The graph can express static and runtime communication and replication structures, as found in Message Passing Interface (MPI) and Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM). It also forms the basis for visualizing parallel debugging and performance.

Product design is a promising field for the application of new technologies and methodologies emerging from the digital evolution of Industry 4.0. A great number of tools have been developed in order to accentuate the use of modern Computer-Aided Design (CAD) systems and computational design techniques for design customization in product applications. The present paper deals with the development of two different applications for designing furniture based on the Computational-based Visual Brand Identity (CbVBI) design methodology. For the first case study, the Application Programming Interface (API) SolidworksTM (VBA event-driven programming language) is used. The second case study focuses on the visual programming language of GrasshopperTM, which is incorporated within Rhinoceros3DTM. The proposed case studies offer a great deal of flexibility in both design and manufacturing, while many design alternatives could become available in a very short period.

AbstractOne challenge with design automation is system transparency with adjustable granularity because of the many different forms of representation from multiple disciplines. Previous research has focused on visualization through the generation of graphs, packaging into electronic books, and model highlighting. The research presented in this paper focuses instead on a visual programming approach, commonly applied in the building industry, where design assets and external references are wrapped into visual components and managed on a canvas with information input/output relations displayed. This entails additional documentation efforts, but the visualization is arguably more useful as groups and levels of granularity are adjusted by the engineers themselves as a part of the development work. To explore visual programming and its potential benefits as a way of enabling transparency with adjustable granularity of DA systems within mechanical manufacturing industry, an existing textual design automation system was transformed into a visual one using Grasshopper® (a visual programming environment) and discussed with respect to DA system transparency, feature-based CAD, and DA system development.

Despite recent improvements in computer vision, artificial visual systems’ design is still daunting since an explanation of visual computing algorithms remains elusive. Salient object detection is one problem that is still open due to the difficulty of understanding the brain’s inner workings. Progress in this research area follows the traditional path of hand-made designs using neuroscience knowledge or, more recently, deep learning, a particular branch of machine learning. Recently, a different approach based on genetic programming appeared to enhance handcrafted techniques following two different strategies. The first method follows the idea of combining previous hand-made methods through genetic programming and fuzzy logic. The second approach improves the inner computational structures of basic hand-made models through artificial evolution. This research proposes expanding the artificial dorsal stream using a recent proposal based on symbolic learning to solve salient object detection problems following the second technique. This approach applies the fusion of visual saliency and image segmentation algorithms as a template. The proposed methodology discovers several critical structures in the template through artificial evolution. We present results on a benchmark designed by experts with outstanding results in an extensive comparison with the state of the art, including classical methods and deep learning approaches to highlight the importance of symbolic learning in visual saliency.

As network media data gradually enters the field of visual communication design as information, more scholars have begun to rationally study the relationship between visual communication and network media. This paper mainly studies how to use data-driven nonlinear dynamic neural programming method to realize visual communication design in network media environment. The study constructs a network media visual communication design system from three aspects: data-driven, design process realization, and system flow establishment. The network media visual communication design is realized through the five process stages of data: analysis, definition, integration, visual presentation, and rendering. Based on the optimal control of visual communication design, the evaluation of visual communication realization and the dissemination of visual communication information are further analyzed, and the following three conclusions are drawn: firstly, each factor does not exist alone; they influence each other. The system digs out the association rules of different factors that affect the visual communication design under the standard of 10% support and 85% confidence; secondly, comparison of the output value of the system with the real output value of the object is found that they are very close, which shows that the dynamic neural programming method is more complex and nonlinear. Finally, through the simulation of the relationship between the continuous dissemination of information and the number of tourists, on the first day, there was the first burst of new customers. The first outbreak occurred on the fifth day of the first week. In the first month, as the number of tourists increased, the dissemination of tourist information by tourists also gradually increased. This fully shows that there is always a long-term relationship between information dissemination and audiences.

In this project, Labview programming language is used to design the control system of an elevator for multiple users. Based on the use of visual programming by Labview, the project establishes a graphical soft panel, instead of traditional instrument control panel and programming interface, to run logical updates and operation maintenance easily. Labview is corresponding to the ports of many companies instruments, which makes easy to regulate and control relevant operations. The use of modular design in the project increases systems stability and avoids errors caused by using of mixed data types.

mperative languages like Java, C++, and Python are mostly used for the implementation of Genetic algorithms (GA). Other programming paradigms are far from being an object of study. The paper explores the advantages of a new non-mainstream programming paradigm, with declarative and nondeterministic features, in the implementation of GA. Control Network Programming (CNP) is a visual declarative style of programming in which the program is a set of recursive graphs, that are graphically visualized and developed. The paper demonstrates how the GA can be implemented in an automatic, i.e. non-procedural (declarative) way, using the built-in CNP inference mechanism and tools for its control. The CNP programs are easy to develop and comprehend, thus, CNP can be considered a convenient programming paradigm for efficient teaching and learning of nondeterministic, heuristic, and stochastic algorithms, and in particular GA. The outcomes of using CNP in delivering a course on Advanced Algorithm Design are shown and analyzed, and they strongly support the positive results in teaching when CNP is applied.

AbstractVisual programming environments are popular instruments in teaching Computational Thinking (CT) in schools today. Applying Sense-Reason-Act (SRA) programming can influence the development of computational thinking when forcing pupils to anticipate the unforeseen in their computer programs. SRA-programming originates from the programming of tangible robots, but can also be of equal value in visual programming with on-screen output. The underlying rationale is that programming in a visual programming environment using SRA leads to more understanding of the computational concepts addressed, resulting in a higher level of computational skill compared to visual programming without the application of SRA. Furthermore, it has been hypothesised that if pupils in a visual programming environment can anticipate unforeseen events and solve programming tasks by applying SRA, they will be better able to solve complex computational thinking tasks. To establish if characteristic differences in the development of computational thinking can be measured when SRA-programming is applied in a visual programming environment with an on-screen output, we assessed the applicability of SRA-programming with visual output as the main component of the execution of developed code. This research uses a pre-test post-test design that reveals significant differences in the development of computational thinking in two treatment conditions. To assess CT, the Computational Thinking Test (CTt) was used. Results show that when using SRA-programming in a visual programming environment it leads to an increased understanding of complex computational concepts, which results in a significant increase in the development of computational thinking.

Mixed and Virtual Reality (MVR) devices are now more accessible. However, developing MVR applications is still complex for the majority of developers, because it requires specific expertise. For the past few years, several packaged solutions offered to assist developers who are non-MVR experts. These solutions rarely offer full freedom to create specific interactions adapted to the context. We therefore propose a new MVR tool named MIREDGE (MIxed and virtual REality Development tool for Game Engine). Its interface allows visual programming of MVR interactions. This solution aims at allowing developers to capitalize, re- use, share and associate interaction algorithms. It also takes into account software and hardware compatibility in order to compose new algorithms. The specific architecture of MIREDGE provides opportunities for MVR and non-MVR developers to collaborate to meet a common need: writing efficient MVR interaction algorithms. MIREDGE Editor was evaluated by 31 MVR and non-MVR developers. Results shows that MIREDGE Editor seems effective and efficient particularly for non-MVR developers.

In the optimal design of large prestressed aqueduct structure, the optimal design results need to be automatically drawn. In this paper, the parametric drawing method is proposed by combining high-level programming language FORTRAN and Auto LISP, and developed a designing system of mixed programming using FORTRAN and Auto LISP. The programming system is applied to the optimal design process of large prestressed aqueduct with rectangle and U-shaped cross-section. The optimal design result is automatically transformed into visual graphics (documents), therefore realized the automatic drawing. In this way, designers’ graphics labor intensity and repeated, complicated calculation can be reduced and the design cycle can shorten. Data files (*.DAT) and graphics files (*.LISP) can be generated not only by FORTRAN, but also by other high-level programming languages such as C++, VC etc.

The purpose of this study is to provide more orderly and convenient urban planning ideas for the fast-paced life in the complex urban environment. The current sign design is analyzed according to the needs of urban residents for barrier-free sign design, and the sign design based on urban space color is established. An urban landscape visual communication optimization method is proposed based on hue saturation value (HSV) technology. The multiscale retinex (MSR) algorithm is used as a reference for simulation experiments. The experimental results show that the designed optimization method is significantly better than the traditional method in the expression effect of visual communication. First, the attention time of the sign design can be reduced by more than 3 seconds, which can effectively improve the lives of urban residents and tourists and improve their browsing efficiency. Next, 94% of the citizens believe that optimized urban signs are more prominent than traditional ones. Finally, the sign design optimization method proposed provides an image with a higher definition than the traditional sign design method. The proposed sign design and optimization scheme can effectively coordinate the relationship among urban landscape design, guided objects, and cities, help busy urban life, and provide new ideas for the development direction of visual communication design.

This study evaluates the effectiveness of visual block programming-based instruction and its possibilities in the training of future teachers. In particular, the application Scratch, a visual programming environment, was employed to introduce pre-service teachers to programming. The study followed a mixed-method design with a sample of 79 pre-service teachers. A quantitative approach was used to evaluate the gains in the participants’ knowledge of computational concepts and attitudes towards Scratch as a pedagogic tool. A qualitative analysis aimed at evaluating the participants’ knowledge concerning programming applications, and their perception about possible difficulties in the implementation of programming in educational contexts. Positive results were obtained for programming in the classroom, with significant improvements in innovation, collaboration, active learning, motivation, and fun for the students. After the experiment, the subjects highlighted Scratch as a fundamental block programming tool and the need for teacher training in this field. The need to improve the implementation of visual block programming in Education Degree curricula is supported.

Current research presents a visual-computational tool to design and investigate round electrostatic lenses in sense of analysis procedure. The finite elements methods is adopted to find the electrostatic potential in the lens region. Laplace’s equation is first replaced by a certain functional which physically represent the electric energy stored in the electric field. This functional is then minimized at each mesh point with respect to the nearest eight ones. This minimization process is proved to be entirely equivalent to solving Laplace’s equation. The requirement that the functional being minimized is then yields a set of nine point equations which inter relate the potentials at adjacent mesh points. Finally this set of equations is solved to find the electrostatic potential at each mesh point in the region of the lens under consideration. The procedure steps mention above are coded to program written in visual basic. Hence an interface tool for analyzing and designing electrostatic lenses has been built up. Designing results proved that the introduced tools has an excellent outputs in comparison with the others written in not visual programming languages. Furthermore it easier for researchers and designer to use such a tool over their counterpart ones.

Article use Visual LISP development tools and DCL dialog technology, which implements the standard straight teeth, a two-dimensional cylindrical gear parametric drawing on AutoCAD platform, with easy to operate and improve design efficiency. We achieved that using the dialog box design input parameters, and gear parts of the design calculations, parameters proofreading and all kinds of gear design drawing different structures by programming. The output is fully automated computer-aided design system. The results show that the design of the system significantly improves the efficiency of the part design.

The solving of design problems frequently involves visual thinking, which has to do with the intensive use of visual knowledge like pictures, images, and other types of visual displays. The recognized power of typological knowledge in design problem solving is applied to support the exploration of a diversity of possible design solutions represented in a pictorial mode. The innovative use of computer science technologies enables a smooth link of visual typological knowledge with the design goals. Within the framework, a core technology was designed to respond to a designer's specific needs through dynamic user viewpoint generation, so that design solutions are associated with relevant (retrieved) visual typologies from the knowledge base. This has been achieved in a two-way process, in which the designer establishes an interactive dialogue with an experimental computerized framework.

The development of digital technologies serves as an important tool for solving urgent problems in the field of construction of new and reconstruction of existing real estate objects. The widespread introduction into practice of modern software systems that imply BIM technologies allows to avoid errors in the creation of design models of buildings and structures for the analysis of resistance to progressive collapse. This article examines the influence of the method of forming the design model on the qualitative and quantitative indicators of the parameters of the stress-strain state of the bearing system. The research methods are based on comparing the analysis results and the established parameters of the stress-strain state of the design model of a multi-storey building made of monolithic reinforced concrete when comparing them with the results of experimental studies. It was found that the use of BIM-technologies, in particular, the system of the graphic editor of algorithms for constructing the design scheme of the building using the SAPFIR-3D software complex, when analyzing the resistance to the phenomena of progressive collapse, does not reduce the quality of the executed design model. Together with a decrease in labor intensity and the number of possible errors, the use of the described technology for the formation of a computational model will reduce the time required for the design work, which will reduce the time required to prepare the necessary documentation.

Traditional flat patterns can no longer satisfy people’s pursuit of visual illusion patterns with a sense of space and three-dimensionality. The use of computer representation can realize the innovative artistic design and can directly generate various highly creative visual images in the computer according to the theme and creative needs. We input the digital data related to the fabric, such as graphics, photographic photos, logos, fonts, and textures, into the computer and then use various application software to perform various special effects on them to produce creative, unique, and surprising picture effects. In the aspect of exploring the meaning of the theme, the application of spatial expression means is studied, and practical research is carried out to guide the design of works with spatial beauty and creativity. In view of the neglect of artistic design, on the basis of studying the space art expression of traditional printing and dyeing process patterns, the traditional space art expression is combined with computer image processing technology. And special techniques are used to create differences in various textile fabrics and garments. We use the software of digital art design to carry out the artistic creation practice of spatial expression.
