This study explored change in six Victorian secondary colleges some four years into the major school-system change program known as ?????Schools of the Future?????. The purpose of the study was to identify successful models and practices for positive school change by exploring school change from the school level perspective. A focus of the investigation was an organizational development program designed by a North American professor of organization and management in which Victorian school principals were trained as their schools entered the ?????Schools of the Future????? program. The project was guided initially by four major research questions to which six additional research questions were added as the research progressed. The research methodology was qualitative. The data for this investigation were collected in 1997. The main means of gathering them was the in-depth interview of the principals of the six schools in the study and of the four members of staff they nominated as knowledgeable about their school?????s change processes. A follow-up questionnaire to the interview, a telephone questionnaire that asked principals for background information about their schools, and a study of school documents were also sources of data. The analysis and interpretation of the data related to charge in the schools was presented in the forms of six case studies and a multisite study. Eleven variables and eighteen insights identified the aspects associated with successful change across the sites. The study?????s three major findings identified the critical importance in the success of change of the school?????s organizational culture and individual participants in change processes, its relationship to elements in its external environment and the nature of its planning for change. A theoretical framework for positive school change environments was developed. It combined the elements associated with successful change in the study. This framework may prove useful as a basis for further research on systemic change in schools and as a point of reference for those actually engaged in leading the change process in schools and school systems.

As leadership theory continues to develop and change, so do the attempts to enhance experiences for women in higher education. Women face many obstacles, which include lack of role models in student and institutional leaders (Astin & Leland, 1991). Traditionally, institutions offer no specific leadership programs or curricula and pay minimal attention to the leadership development of their students (Cress, Astin, Zimmerman-Oster, & Burkhardt, 2001). This study was a case study with an in-depth analysis of the establishment of a womenâ s leadership education and training program at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia. Six students, four administrators, and one intern were interviewed to illustrate the process of the planning of the program, its implementation and current operations, and the complexities involved. Document analysis and observations were utilized as well. The study was focused on the impact of the program on the students and administrators involved in the development of the program during this period. The researcher also described how the Batten Leadership Institute has evolved over the past five years with a focus on how it came into being, what it was like, then and now, and changes that have occurred. The findings are organized by three phases: 1) conceptualization, 2) implementation, and 3) refinement and expansion. The phases are based on a chronological framework and resulting categories and themes emerged. Results indicate the participantsâ described their leadership skills improved because of their participation and experience in the BLI. The Communication Skills Group and its interpersonal component as well the presence of positive female role-models created the most personal transformation for the student participants. The studentsâ previous ideas and definitions of leadership became more comprehensive. As a result of their personal transformation, their perceptions of the BLI changed from initial uncertainty and hesitation to admiration and support. The program expanded significantly over the first five years. Programmatic challenges have been addressed and many positive changes have occurred. Hollins administrators embraced the BLI and fully supported future expansions within Hollins University and in the Roanoke community.

Fifty years ago there were no stored-program electronic computers in the world. Even thirty years ago a computer was something that few organisations could afford, and few people could use. Suddenly, in the 1960s and 70s, everything changed and computers began to become accessible. Today* the need for education in Business Computing is generally acknowledged, with each of Victoria's seven universities offering courses of this type. What happened to promote the extremely rapid adoption of such courses is the subject of this thesis. I will argue that although Computer Science began in Australia's universities of the 1950s, courses in Business Computing commenced in the 1960s due to the requirement of the Commonwealth Government for computing professionals to fulfil its growing administrative needs. The Commonwealth developed Programmer-in-Training courses were later devolved to the new Colleges of Advanced Education. The movement of several key figures from the Commonwealth Public Service to take up positions in Victorian CAEs was significant, and the courses they subsequently developed became the model for many future courses in Business Computing. The reluctance of the universities to become involved in what they saw as little more than vocational training, opened the way for the CAEs to develop this curriculum area.

This thesis is a re-evaluation of a movement founded to provide what Samuel Smiles called “the road to learning” for workers in the nineteenth century. Mechanics’ institutes emerged during the 1820s to both criticism and acclaim, becoming part of the physical and intellectual fabric of the age and inspiring a nationwide building programme funded entirely by public subscription. Beginning with a handful of examples in major British cities, they eventually spread across the Anglophone world. They were at the forefront of public engagement with arts, science and technology. This thesis is a history of the mechanics’ institute movement in the British Isles from the 1820s through to the late 1860s, when State involvement in areas previously dominated by private enterprises such as mechanics’ institutes, for example library provision and elementary schooling, became more pronounced. The existing historiography on mechanics’ institutes is primarily regional in scope and this thesis breaks new ground by synthesising a national perspective on their wider social, political and cultural histories. It contributes to these broader themes, as well as areas as diverse as educational history, the history of public exhibition and public spaces, visual culture, print culture, popular literacy and literature (including literature generated by the Institutes themselves, such as poetry and prose composed by members), financial services, education in cultural and aesthetic judgement, Institutes as sources of protest by means of Parliamentary petitions, economic history, and the nature, theory and practice of the popular dissemination of ideas. These advances free the thesis from ongoing debate around the success or failure of mechanics’ institutes, allowing the emphasis to be on the experiential history of the “living” Institute. The diverse source base for the thesis includes art, sculpture, poetry and memoir alongside such things as economic data, library loan statistics, membership numbers and profit / loss accounts from institute reports. The methodology therefore incorporates qualitative (for example, tracing the evolution of attitudes towards Institutes in contemporary culture by analysing the language used to describe them over time) and quantitative (for example, exploring Institutes as providers of financial services to working people) techniques. For the first time, mechanics’ institutes are studied in relation to political corruption, debates concerning the morality of literature and literacy during the nineteenth century, and the legislative processes of the period.

Regardless of the promotion structures employed within the different educational systems of this country, men dominate the position of Principal of secondary schools. Despite legislation seeking to provide equality of opportunity and the apparent breaking down of deeply entrenched societal attitudes of women being the servers or followers, there still exist factors that give rise to the under-representation of women in Principal positions of secondary schools. This thesis was designed to investigate issues associated with the apparent gender imbalance in Principal positions in Victoria's government secondary schools. It will attempt to identify elements that have militated against women gaining such positions. The research methodology employed to investigate the problem is a case study approach. The study centered on a girl's school, Gilmore College for Girls, which has had a succession of female Principals. The research involved inviting women who were Principals of Gilmore College for Girls to participate in an interview. Within that format structured interviews were used to seek the women Principals' perceptions as to factors leading to this under-representation of women as Principals. The findings from this study are then interpreted in the light of factors by which the literature explains the problem. Various reasons emerged to explain the lower number of women Principals. It seemed to stem from perceptions about their roles, which limited the level of their involvement in schools: for instance once women teachers were married with children they were less likely to advance in their careers and to apply for Principal positions. The workload of the Principal was also identified as one of the factors inhibiting women from applying for Principal positions. It was seen to make marriage and child rearing almost impossible. Therefore most women were content to be classroom teachers and only apply for positions that suited their interests and allowed them to meet family, home and social commitments. It is suggested that further related investigations be pursued of women in Principal positions of our secondary schools.

Background Sedentary behaviour has incrementally increased over the past few years. The scientific community recognises this behaviour as a twenty first century disease which reflects the detrimental effects of excessive sitting on several adverse functional and clinical health outcomes, such as chronic disease, in the general adult population. Many evolving contemporary occupations require that employees sit an average of eight hours per day at work stations or office desks, especially when using communication technology. Even after accounting for the self-reported time spent in recommended physical activity, the negative dose-response relationship between time spent in sedentary behaviour and the all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality still remain. Aim: To establish a profile of sedentary behaviour as well as levels of physical activity and coronary artery disease risk factors in employees at a tertiary institute in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Another aim is to determine whether an association exists between the aforementioned variables.

Las tendinopatías en el deporte poseen una prevalencia considerable, especialmente las de la extremidad inferior. Estas lesiones ocasionan una limitación funcional en el desplazamiento corporal y la práctica deportiva. En la valoración y monitorización de su evolución clínica se suele emplear la ecografía como medio de valoración estructural. Sin embargo, el uso de instrumentos de medida de resultados de salud autoreportados ha adquirido relevancia en este proceso, ya que permiten reflejar el punto de vista del paciente en el proceso de evaluación de resultados. El objetivo de este estudio es adaptar y validar en español el cuestionario VISA-P para la valoración de la gravedad de los síntomas en deportistas con tendinopatía rotuliana. Se trata de un instrumento de referencia internacional, que cuenta con adaptaciones en varios idiomas. Considerando el marco propuesto por la iniciativa COSMIN para la evaluación de las propiedades métricas de instrumentos de medida de resultados en salud, se realizó la adaptación de la escala VISA-P y a la evaluación de la fiabilidad, validez y sensibilidad al cambio de las puntuaciones obtenidas con este instrumento en población española. En base a los resultados obtenidos se puede afirmar que la versión española de la escala VISA-P (VISA-P-Sp) es conceptualmente similar a la escala original en inglés. Las puntuaciones obtenidas muestran unos valores de fiabilidad adecuados, tanto en términos de consistencia interna de los ítems como de estabilidad temporal. Además posee indicadores de validez externa al mostrar una correlación alta y significativa con otros instrumentos que valoran el impacto funcional de la patología en la extremidad inferior. Respecto a la capacidad para detectar cambios clínicos significativos, el umbral de cambio mínimo detectable para la versión en español de la escala VISA-P es de 14 puntos, y posee un error estándar de medida de 4 puntos. Las puntuaciones de cambio clínico relevante se producen a partir de los 13 puntos, pero este umbral es dependiente de la puntuación basal que haya obtenido el deportista, de modo que los más sintomáticos requieren cambios mayores para percibir mejoría clínica. El análisis factorial confirmatorio ha permitido obtener las primeras evidencias sobre la estructura unidimensional de la escala VISA-P, así como de su invarianza a través del sexo, lo que permite utilizar la puntuación final como elemento significativo, y establecer comparaciones de las puntuaciones entre hombres y mujeres sin sesgo de género. Respecto a su validez transcultural, existe invarianza parcial de la medida, y se requiere mayor investigación para establecer conclusiones sobre la comparabilidad de las puntuaciones entre sujetos de diferentes países o culturas.
Tendinopathies in sports have considerable prevalence, especially in lower limb. These injuries cause a functional limitation in body movements and also can limit sports participation. In the evaluation and monitoring the clinical evolution of tendinopathy ultrasound it is often used as an objective instrument of structural assessment. However, the use of patient-reported outcome measures has become important in this process, as they allow reflecting the patient’s point of view in the outcomes assessment. The aim of the present study was to obtain a Spanish cross-cultural adaptation of the VISA-P scale for assessing the severity of symptoms in athletes with patellar tendinopathy. It has become the most widely patient-reported outcome measure in patellar tendinopathy and it is available in several languages. Considering the international COSMIN initiative proposed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the instruments for measuring health outcomes, the cross-cultural adaptation of the VISA-P scale and the assessment of the reliability, validity and sensitivity to change of its scores were carried out in Spanish population. Based on the obtained results it we are confident that the Spanish VISA-P adaptation (VISA-P-Sp) is conceptually similar to the original scale in English. The scores showed suitable values of reliability, both in terms of internal consistency and temporal stability. It also has external validity indicators, as the highly significant correlation with other instruments that assess the functional impact of the patellar tendinopathy. Regarding the ability to detect clinically significant changes, the threshold of minimum detectable change for the VISA-P-Sp scale is 11 points, and has a standard measurement error of 4 points. Scores of relevant clinical change are produced from 13 points, but this threshold is dependent on the VISA-P-Sp baseline score, so the more symptomatic patients require major changes in the scale to perceive a relevant clinical improvement. The confirmatory factor analysis has yielded the earliest evidence on the one-dimensional structure of the VISA-P scale, and its sex invariance. It allows using the final score of the scale as a significant element, and comparisons of scores between men and women without gender bias. Regarding its cultural validity, we obtained evidence for partial metric invariance, and more research is needed to draw conclusions about the comparability of scores between subjects from different countries or cultures.

The Bill J. Priest Institute for Economic Development is an entity created in the Dallas County Community College District to serve the community in workforce and economic development. The history of the Priest Institute over the last ten years parallels and illustrates the commitment of community colleges nationally to workforce and economic development. The history also reflects similar goals and trends within the state of Texas and, particularly, in the city of Dallas. The Priest Institute is made up of three distinct entities. One entity is the Edmund J. Kahn Job Training Center; another is the Business and Professional Institute, which provides consulting and training services to business clients. The final service area is the complex made up of the regional North Texas Small Business Development Center and its several related local service operations. This study provides an analytical history of each of these components and the process by which they came together in a model facility in Dallas. This study also describes perceptions of persons within the Institute regarding its present mission and purposes and the efficacy of the current organizational structure both internally and within the district operation as an appropriate structure enabling the Institute to meet its goals.

Proprietary colleges are uniquely different from two or four year colleges due to the emphasis on the student establishing a definite career path prior to enrollment. Because of this career track emphasis, Bandura's (1977) postulation that self-efficacy is a significant variable influencing task completion may offer insight into the challenge of student retention at a proprietary college. The study's purpose was to determine if career self-efficacy, demographic factors, and academic preparedness measures in first quarter students could predict student persistence, class attendance, and academic performance. The statistical technique of multinomial logistic regression was applied to data files of 725 first quarter students who attended The Art Institute of Dallas from Summer 1996 through Winter 1997. The predictor variables included a measure of career self-efficacy, ASSET scores (American College Testing Program, 1994), ethnicity, age, gender, full-time/part-time attendance, high school grade point average, parents' educational level, socioeconomic status, and developmental course placement. Criterion variables were completion, class attendance, and cumulative grade point average.

This research project examined the diffusion of change within one Victorian TAPE Institute by engaging action research to facilitate implementation of e-mail technology. The theoretical framework involving the concepts of technology innovation and action research was enhanced with the aid of Rogers's (1983) model of the diffusion of the innovation process. Political and cultural factors made up the initiation phase of innovation, enabling the research to concentrate on the implementation phase of e-mail Roger's (1983) model also provided adopter categories that related to the findings of a Computer Attitude Survey that was conducted at The School of Mines and Industries Ballarat (SMB), now the University of Ballarat—TAPE Division since amalgamation on 1st January 1998. Despite management rhetoric about the need to utilise e-mail, Institute teaching staff lacked individual computers in their work areas and most were waiting to become connected to the Internet as late as 1997. According to the action research reports, many staff were resistant to the new e-mail facilities despite having access to personal computers whose numbers doubled annually. The action research project became focussed when action researchers realised that e-mail workshop training was ineffective and that staff required improved access. Improvement to processes within education through collaborative action research had earlier been achieved (McTaggart 1994), and this project actively engaged practitioners to facilitate decentralised e-mail training in the workplace through the action research spiral of planning, acting, observing and reflecting, before replanning. The action researchers * task was to find ways to improve the diffusion of e-mail throughout the Institute and to develop theoretical constructs. My research task was to determine whether action research could successfully facilitate e-mail throughout the Institute. A rich literature existed about technology use in education, technology teaching, gender issues, less about computerphobia, and none about 'e-mailphobia \ It seemed appropriate to pursue the issue of e-mailphobia since it was marginalised, or ignored in the literature. The major political and cultural influences on the technologising of SMB and e-mail introduction were complex, making it impossible to ascertain the relative degrees of influence held by Federal and State Governments, SMB's leadership or the local community, Nonetheless, with the implementation of e-mail, traditional ways were challenged as SMB's culture changed. E-mail training was identified as a staff professional development activity that had been largely unsuccessful. Action research is critical collaborative inquiry by reflective practitioners who are accountable for making the results of their inquiry public and who are self-evaluating of their practice while engaging participative problem-solving and continuing professional development (Zuber-Skerritt 1992, 1993). Action research was the methodology employed in researching e-mail implementation into SMB because it involved collaborative inquiry with colleagues as reflective practitioners. Thoughtful questions could best be explored using deconstructivist philosophy, in asking about the noise of silence, which issues were not addressed, what were the contradictions and who was being marginalised with e-mail usage within SMB. Reviewing literature on action research was complicated by its broad definition and by the variability of research (King & Lonnquist 1992), and yet action research as a research methodology was well represented in educational research literature, and provided a systematic and recognisable way for practitioners to conduct their research. On the basis of this study, it could be stated that action research facilitated the diffusion of e-mail technology into one TAPE Institute, despite the process being disappointingly slow. While the process in establishing the action research group was problematic, action researchers showed that a window of opportunity existed for decentralised diffusion of e-mail training,in preference to bureaucratically motivated 'workshops. Eight major findings, grouped under two broad headings were identified: the process of diffusion (planning, nature of the process, culture, politics) and outcomes of diffusion (categorising, e-mailphobia, the survey device and technology in education). The findings indicated that staff had little experience with e-mail and appeared not to recognise its benefits. While 54.1% did not agree that electronic means could be the preferred way to receive Institute memost some 13.7% admitted to problems with using the voice answering service on telephones. Some 43.3% thought e-mail would not improve their connectedness (how they related) to the Institute. A small percentage of staff had trouble with telephone voice-mail and a number of these were anxious computer users. Individualised tuition and peer support proved helpful to individual staff whom action researchers believed to be 'at risk', as determined from the results of a Computer Attitude Survey. An instructional strategy that fostered the development of self-regulation and peer support was valuable, but there was no measure of the effects of this action research program, other than in qualitative terms. Nevertheless, action research gave space to reflect on the nature of the underlying processes in adopting e-mail. Challenges faced by TAPE action researchers are integrally affected by the values within TAPE, which change constantly and have recently been extensive enough to be considered as a 'new paradigm'. The influence of competition policy, the training reform agenda and technologisation of training have challenged traditional TAPE values. Action research reported that many staff had little immediate professional reason to use e-mail Theoretical answers were submerged beneath practical professional concerns, which related back to how much time teachers had and whether they could benefit from e-mail. A need for the development of principles for the sound educational uses of e-mail increases with the internationalisation of education and an increasing awareness of cultural differences. The implications for conducting action research in TAPE are addressed under the two broad issues of power and pedagogy. Issues of power included gaining access, management's inability to overcome staff resistance to technology, changing TAPE values and using technology for conducting action research. Pedagogical issues included the recognition of educational above technological issues and training staff in action research. Finally, seventeen steps are suggested to overcome power and pedagogical impediments to the conduct of action research within TAPE. This action research project has provided greater insight into the difficulties of successfully introducing one culture-specific technology into one TAPE Institute. TAPE Institutes need to encourage more action research into their operations, and it is only then that -we can expect to answer the unanswered questions raised in this research project.

This thesis reports an insider case study conducted by an active participant in the setting which is the UHI Millennium Institute. UHI is a federal, collegial partnership of 13 academic partner colleges. This partnership is made up of Further Education Colleges and smaller and specialised institutions. The case study focuses on one programme team, the BA Social Sciences team and at its role in the implementation of the institutional learning and teaching policy and its related strategies. The case study uses literature on policy implementation and of Further/Higher Education links. It makes use of social practice theory and the notion of the teaching and learning regime to analyse the cultural characteristics of the team and a typolgy of responses to change, to review the response of the team to policy objectives. In doing so the case study is a response to calls for more 'close-up' research at the meso-level of analysis. The study reviews the response of the team over a 10-year trajectory from the initial validation of the programme to 2009. The study takes an interpretive, participant-obervation based approach to examine the cultural characteristics and response of the programme team. The methods used to gather data include examination of comprehensive documentation relating to the programme over this time frame and semi-structured interviews with team members. The findings are that the cultural character of the team is dominated by its origins in Further Education and by the social relationships involved in a team which spans three colleges and deals with three sets of college managers and UHI. The response of the team to institutional policy is to embrace its objectives but also to reconstruct policy in ways possible within constraints. The team can make certain choices but is also constrained by policy from 'the top'. The study discusses implications for the notion of the teaching and learning regime and for the typology of responses used and proposes ways in which these might be modified. Proposals for further research in this field are made, particularly involving the implications for policy making of the relationship between college management and UHI.

Resumo: No cenário da atual sociedade pós-industrial, o conhecimento se tornou recurso chave para base institucional da economia. Capacitar-se para seu melhor uso se tornou estratégico à sua transformação em bens de capital. Verifica-se que saber usá-lo é saber interagir com diferentes atores de um sistema complexo voltado fortemente à inovação tecnológica. Inovar tornou-se a engrenagem deste sistema, tida como base econômica desta sociedade do conhecimento. As universidades foram e são instituições historicamente envolvidas com este ativo econômico, o conhecimento. Por este motivo, sempre estiveram direta ou indiretamente envolvidas neste processo. Destaca-se, no entanto, nas últimas décadas, uma intensificação de sua ação na eficácia da transformação do conhecimento produzido ou capaz de produzir em um fomento preponderante à inovação. O sistema de inovação eficaz é cada vez mais dependente deste ator, a universidade. Observa-se uma alteração no perfil de envolvimento das universidades em temas que, a princípio, fogem da tríade que compõe seu papel primordial: o ensino, a pesquisa e a extensão, sendo este processo chamado de segunda revolução acadêmica. Fenômeno que já se encontra fortemente marcado em países centrais. Por outro lado, as universidades de países periféricos, como o Brasil, encontram-se em um constante processo de aprimoramento desta sua interação com seu próprio SNCT&I. No Brasil, observa-se intensas mudanças e discussões sobre o real papel da universidade, acompanhada por mudanças do arcabouço legal e administrativo em torno deste tema, tendo como marco a Lei da Inovação (2004), que obrigou a implementação de Núcleos de Inovação Tecnológica - NIT no organograma acadêmico. A implantação desta estrutura de interface propiciou ferramentas para que universidades inovem organizacionalmente e tenham a oportunidade de se postar como regentes nesta dinâmica tecnocientífica. Por outro lado, a literatura sobre SNCT&I ainda se encontra dispersa e em constante evolução, dificultando estudos rígidos sobre o papel das universidades neste cenário. Nesta vertente, o presente trabalho pretende contribuir para o desenvolvimento de formas de mensurar esta atuação em universidades brasileiras, sugerindo indicadores da sua interação com o SNCT&I. Como estudo de caso foi utilizado a Unicamp, comparando dois momentos temporais do seu perfil de interação com o SNCT&I: antes e após a criação da Agência de Inovação da Unicamp (INOVA-Unicamp), que instituiu uma nova estrutura organizacional para gestão da tecnologia e da inovação na universidade. Este método permitiu a avaliação relativa entre estes dois cortes temporais (1999 - 2003 e 2004 - 2008) frente ao quadro de indicadores sugeridos, suscitando as premissas básicas relativas às mudanças organizacionais a serem implementadas para que se estimule uma maior inserção de universidades neste sistema.
Abstract: In the scenario of post-industrial society, knowledge has become a key resource to the economy's institutional base. The ability to best apply knowledge has become strategic in its transformation into capital goods. Knowing how to use this knowledge is knowing how to interact with different players in a complex system, strongly oriented toward technological innovation. Innovation has become the driver of that system and is regarded as the economic basis of knowledge society. Universities were and still are historically involved in this economic asset: knowledge. For this reason, they have always been directly or indirectly engaged in this process. In recent decades, we can highlight their increasingly significant role in effectively transforming knowledge into an overarching encouragement of innovation advancement. The effective innovation system has been depending progressively more on this player, the university. There has been a change in the profile of university engagement in themes which, in principle, do not comprise their triad of primordial roles: education, research and extension. This process is being called the second academic revolution, already a strongly established phenomenon in the world's core countries. On the other hand, the universities of periphery countries like Brazil are undergoing a constant process of improving their interaction with their own SNCT&I (National System for Science, Technology and Innovation). In Brazil, there have been intensive changes and discussions on the real role of universities, followed by legal and administrative framework modifications pertinent to this theme. The Innovation Act of 2004 was a milestone, mandating the implementation of Technology Innovation Centers - NIT (Technology Transfer Office - TTO) in academic organization plans. Installing this interfacing structure provided tools for universities to promote organizational innovation and gain the opportunity to position themselves as leaders of this techno-scientific dynamic. However, the literature on SNCT&I is still dispersed and constantly evolving, making it difficult to prepare rigid studies on the role of universities within this scenario. In light of this, the present work aims to make a contribution toward developing ways to measure these activities within Brazilian universities, suggesting indicators of university-SNCT&I interaction. Unicamp comprises the case study described herein, comparing two moments in its profile of interaction with the SNCT&I: before and after creation of the Unicamp Innovation Agency (INOVA-Unicamp), which established a new organizational structure for technology and innovation management at the university. This method enabled a comparison between these two periods (1999-2003 and 2004-2008) using the suggested indicators, thus calling up the basic assumptions regarding the organizational changes that should be implemented in order to stimulate a deeper insertion of universities into this system.

Esta pesquisa teve como alvo o exame psicossocial da participação política a partir do depoimento de militantes estudantis. Trata-se de uma investigação orientada metodologicamente por Ecléa Bosi, José Moura Gonçalves Filho e Maria Isaura Pereira de Queirós, envolvendo a realização de entrevistas semidirigidas analisadas qualitativamente. Foram realizadas e interpretadas duas entrevistas com militantes que atuaram no final dos anos 80 e início dos anos 90 no Instituto de Psicologia da USP. Entre os assuntos abordados pela pesquisa, destacam-se: as motivações dos depoentes para a política; a importância dos agentes políticos e acontecimentos sociais para o convite à militância; a relação entre a condição social dos militantes e a forma pela qual assumem a política; a relação entre o convite à política e o surgimento do interesse pelo estudo; as características dos episódios de maior efervescência e entusiasmo políticos lembrados pelos depoentes; as disputas aguerridas entre os grupos estudantis; a severa hierarquia entre os militantes e a distância estabelecida entre militantes e não-militantes; a burocratização das entidades e partidos políticos; e por último as convergências e divergências entre psicologia e política. São temas que esta pesquisa procurou enfrentar a partir dos depoimentos. Confrontando as lembranças e discussões dos depoentes com as do próprio pesquisador; confrontando-as também com autores dedicados ao tema, esta pesquisa procura contribuir para o estudo psicossocial da militância estudantil.
In this research, a psycho-social exam about militant students political participation is made, using their testimonies in semi-guided interviews analysed qualitatively. This investigation was methodologically oriented by Ecléa Bosi, José Moura Gonçalves Filho and Maria Isaura Pereira de Queirós. Two student militants who were engaged in politics during the 80’s and the beginning of the 90’s in the University of São Paulo Psychology Institute were interviewed. Among the discussed issues, some stand out: what motivated towards politics; the importance of political agents and social events as an invitation to politics; the relation between the invitation to politics and the emerging of their interest to study; the characteristics of the most enthusiastic and exciting political episodes remembered by them; the strong disputes between students groups; the strict hierarchy between the student militants and the distance established between activist and non-activist; the bureaucracy of institutions and political parties; and last but not least the convergences and divergences between psychology and politics. These are themes this research attempted to face from the declarations. Confronting the memories and discussion of the interviewed people with those of the researcher himself as well as with author who study the theme, this work attempts to enrich the psycho-social study of student political militancy.

Joseph F. Merrill served as Church Commissioner of Education from 1928 to 1933, an era critical in the development of Latter-day Saint Education. During his tenure as commissioner several key developments occurred in Church education, among them the closing of most of the remaining Church academies, transfer of nearly all of Church junior colleges to State control, rapid expansion of the Church seminary system, and establishment of the first LDS Institutes of Religion. Merrill also initiated new efforts to encourage LDS educators to seek graduate-level education outside of Utah, and to bring religious scholarship to the teachers of the Church. In addition, during this time attempts were made by forces outside the Church to seriously curtail the continuation of the seminary program, if not to eliminate it entirely. Merrill's efforts were crucial in ensuring the survival and ultimate acceptance of this form of religious education. This study is intended to answer the following research questions: 1. What were the contributions of Joseph F. Merrill as Church Commissioner of Education? 2. How can the lessons from Merrill's administration be applied to the challenges facing Church education today? The first chapter of this thesis is intended to provide the necessary historical back to understand the events which took place during the Merrill tenure. Particular attention is paid to the work of Merrill's predecessor, Adam S. Bennion. Chapter two provides the historical background to understand Merrill's background before he was called as commissioner. The “Beginning of Institute" chapter explores the creation of the Latter-day Saint Institutes of religion. Next, the “Continuing the Transformation of Church Education" explores the decision to close or attempt to transfer to state control the junior colleges owned by the Church during this time. With the transfer of most of the Church colleges underway by the early 1930s, Church education found itself dependent on the work of seminaries and institutes. “The Released Time Seminary Crisis of 1930-31" chapter details the effects made by the report of the state high school inspector, I. L. Williamson, on seminary and Merrill's work to defend the legality of the seminary system. Next, “Joseph F. Merrill and Religious Educators" will document Merrill's dealings with the teachers who served under him as commissioner. Attention is devoted here to the effects of the Depression on Church education, as well as an account of the LDS educational venture with the University of Chicago Divinity school in the 1930s. Finally, the “Conclusions" chapter explains Merrill's departure from the office to serve as president of the European Mission. This chapter will also offer summary answers to the major research questions, and suggestions for future study The overall intent of this study is to shed light on the contributions of Joseph F. Merrill to Latter-day Saint education. It is not intended as a full biographical work, but simply focuses on his service as commissioner, with occasional ventures into other periods as necessary. It is hoped the reader will emerge with a greater understanding of this important era in Church history, as well as an improved vision of the divine hand guiding the fate of the Church.

The site of this research is the Kigali Institute of Science and Technology (KIST). The research was undertaken to investigate first year students' perceived English language needs in order to study successfully at KIST. The research was intended to pave the way for differentiated English language syllabuses for students of varying English proficiency. It sought to answer the following questions: (1) what are students' perceived language needs in order to study through the medium of English at KIST? (2) To what extent does the current English language programme address these perceived needs? And (3) what are the differences in students' perceived language needs at different levels of proficiency? The research was carried out in an interpretive paradigm using both qualitative and quantitative methods. It took the form of a case study utilising questionnaires to collect data. Questionnaires were administered to students, mainstream subject lecturers and English lecturers. The student sample consisted of 212 students chosen from the four previously identified levels of proficiency (beginner, elementary, intermediate and advanced). The lecturer samples consisted of seven subject lecturers and eleven lecturers in English. The research tools used to collect data were administered questionnaires and document analysis. The chi-square statistical test was used to analyse quantitative data especially in establishing differences that appeared between dissimilar proficiency levels. Findings have shown that, although English is no longer a credit-bearing course, students are still interested in learning it. Students expressed a high positive perception for learning language structures, listening and speaking, and a need for reading and writing. However, although it was possible to establish stakeholders' (students, subject lecturers and lecturers in English) perceptions of students' needs, it was not easy to establish what students' real needs and difficulties in English are. Attempts to get valid answers to my questions were not conclusive. Although this research has implications for the future of English language teaching/learning at KIST there is a need for further investigation of students' needs. An important starting point would be to begin a debate at KIST about the whole issue of students' needs. Such research would exploit research tools/methods not used in this research (e.g focus group interviews and observations).

Objetivo: Determinar os efeitos do exercício excêntrico (EE) em pessoas com tendinopatia rotuliana (TR) através da Victorian Institute of Sport Assessment, Patellar (VISA-P). Metodologia: Pesquisa computadorizada nas bases de dados Pubmed/Medline, Science Direct, PEDro, Lilacs, Scielo e Cochrane Library foi efetuada utilizando a combinação: (Victorian Institute of Sport Assessment) AND (patellar tendinopathy OR jumper’s knee) AND (eccentric training OR eccentric exercise) de acordo com guias de PRISMA. A qualidade metodológica dos estudos foi analisada usando a Physiotherapy Evidence Database scoring scale (PEDro). Resultados: Nove estudos cumpriram os critérios de inclusão e obtiveram uma média aritmética de 6,56/10 na escala de PEDro, com um total de 257 participantes. Os estudos selecionados incluíram diferentes formas de executar o EE e foram encontrados resultados estatisticamente significativos na escala de avaliação VISA-P. Conclusão: Os resultados mostraram que a técnica de EE pode contribuir para a reabilitação da TR.

The methodological quality of the studies was analyzed using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database scoring scale (PEDro). Results: Nine papers met the inclusion criteria with an arithmetic mean of 6,56/10 on PEDro scale, with a total of 257 participants. The selected studies included different ways of performing the EE and statistically significant results were found on the Victorian Institute of Sport Assessment: Patellar (VISA-P) rating scale. Conclusion: The results showed that EE can contribute to rehabilitation of jumper’s knee.

This thesis examines the history of Commonwealth Government higher education policy in Australia between 1958 and 1997 and its impact on the development of two groups of academic librarians: the Association of Librarians in Colleges in Advanced Education (ALCAE) and the Committee of Australian University Librarians (CAUL). Although university librarians had met occasionally since the late 1920s, it was only in 1965 that a more formal organisation, known as CAUL, was established to facilitate the exchange of ideas and information. ALCAE was set up in 1969 and played an important role helping develop a special concept of library service peculiar to the newly formed College of Advanced Education (CAE) sector. As well as examining the impact of Commonwealth Government higher education policy on ALCAE and CAUL, the thesis also explores the influence of other factors on these two groups, including the range of personalities that comprised them, and their relationship with their parent institutions and with other professional groups and organisations. The study focuses on how higher education policy and these other external and internal factors shaped the functions, aspirations, and internal dynamics of these two groups and how this resulted in each group evolving differently. The author argues that, because of the greater attention given to the special educational role of libraries in the CAE curriculum, the group of college librarians had the opportunity to participate in, and have some influence on, Commonwealth Government statutory bodies responsible for the coordination of policy and the distribution of funding for the CAE sector. The link between ALCAE and formal policy-making processes resulted in a more dynamic group than CAUL, with the university librarians being discouraged by their Vice-Chancellors from having contact with university funding bodies because of the desire of the universities to maintain a greater level of control over their affairs and resist interference from government. The circumstances of each group underwent a reversal over time as ALCAE's effectiveness began to diminish as a result of changes to the CAE sector and as member interest was transferred to other groups and organisations. Conversely, CAUL gradually became a more active group during the 1980s and early 1990s as a result of changes to higher education, the efforts of some university librarians, and changes in membership. This study is based principally on primary source material, with the story of ALCAE and CAUL being told through the use of a combination of original documentation (including minutes of meetings and correspondence) and interviews with members of each group and other key figures.

Climate change (CC) is currently considered to be the most systemic threat to life on Earth. Education plays a critical role in the global CC response. The importance of CC education has been reiterated in most CC international conventions, including Article 12 of the 2015 Paris Climate Change Agreement. To date, only a few studies have been undertaken to examine what the Australian government, states and territories are doing in regard to educating young Australians about CC. In particular, there is a scarcity of research that examines the three critical aspects of CC education: the curriculum, the teaching of CC, and the learning of CC. This study examines CC education within the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) study designs; and, its implementation within a Victorian upper-secondary school. Specifically, the study examines in which VCE subjects CC is taught, its conceptualisation and integration within the subjects. In regard to implementation, the study examines the perspectives of teachers who teach CC in Years 11 and 12, and their students, with particular attention given to the implemented curriculum and the attained curriculum. Specifically, the following research questions were put forward: (1) How is CC represented in the study design for years 11-12 in the VCE curriculum, and how is it conceptualised? (2) How is CC education conceptualised and implemented in years 11-12 from the teachers’ perspectives? And, (3) How is CC education conceptualised by Years 11 and 12 students studying the topic? A qualitative methodological approach is applied to data selection and analysis. Data sources for addressing the first question consists of the study designs constituting the VCE curriculum. Keywords were developed and applied for identifying study designs in which CC is present. These were further analysed thematically. Data sources for addressing Questions 2-3 consist of semi-structured interviews with teachers and students at the selected Victorian school. Thematic analysis is applied for examining CC conceptualisation. The results indicate that CC education is present in only ten subjects out of the 96 VCE study designs. CC education in the various study designs appears in silos. Within these silos, the content knowledge is fragmented and de-contextualised from the comprehensive aspects that make up CC. The incomplete conceptualisation of CC by the curriculum also extends to teachers and students. The teachers in this study do not seem to have formal structural support for teaching CC. Additionally, the curriculum is not prescriptive enough in relation to CC, and there are no professional development or teamwork opportunities at the school that could potentially support teachers. The students in this study are eager to learn more and much of their knowledge about CC is derived from the media rather than from school, suggesting that schools are failing to equip students with appropriate CC knowledge. The study contributes applicable and translational information that may be used to improve CC education within Australian schools in general, and at the Victorian VCE level in particular. The critical deficits found in the conceptualisation of CC and integration within the curriculum should be of prime interest to policymakers, curriculum developers and educators. There is an acute need to provide teachers with appropriate CC pedagogical content knowledge and support in teaching CC at the school level.

The rainfall is randomly distributed across Taiwan Island. In the circumstances that water use is quite restricted by the influence of natural factor, saving water use is the better management policy to solve water use problem. This study takes campus environment for example, trying to monitor the application of water resource in different activities, areas and water marks, and undertaking water efficiency analysis based on time as the key quantitative unit in the statistical analysis. This study hopes to monitor the application of water resource through the monitoring system of environmental information, find out the states of water use in different situations (including teaching, administration, cleansing, and domestic use) through statistics, and undertake the comparison between the water use efficiencies with or without the planning areas of holistic water resource system. The data of this study not only offers valuable references to make industrial plan or build water facility, but also helps to make water resource plan and relevant policy in the future.

Vocational/technical education has brought our nation a great grassroots technical workforce. However, in light of the changes in the industrial structure in recent years, our government has passed regulatory laws that encourage the upgrading of junior colleges to institutes and universities of technology in order to carry on with and expand the functions of technical colleges. However, since vocational/technical schools have tended to be the secondary choice for students, and the dropping birth rate brings another stern challenge for public and private vocational/technical colleges, let along the possible competition from foreign counterparts with Taiwan’s accession to the WTO. On this fiercely competitive market, how to enhance school teaching and research quality, establish and strengthen each college’s special features, adjust management strategies, improve the school composition and increase the competitiveness to attract students, are all major concern of the agenda of the vocational/technical colleges.     The case-study used in this research has its fundamental strengths and weaknesses. According to SWOT analysis, its strength includes:good reputation, sound financing, and great geographical location. While the weakness comes from its limited land, insufficient propaganda and administrative training. The institute’s opportunity lies in increasing various academic systems, promoting lifelong education, and the establishment of the Central Taiwan Science Park. Its threat, on the other hand, comes from the emergence of new schools and the business drain.     The followings direct to the institute’s present and future advantages in order to establish long-term competitiveness. I. The essential consideration for graduated students to attend the institute in the first place. II. Alumni’s recognition and cohesion toward the institute. III. An overview of the institute’s past management strategies. IV. An evaluation on the current situation.     The research also leads us to find out the following areas that require improvement and reinforcement. I. Quality of the teaching staff II. Flexible curricular options III. Expansion of hardware and software facilities IV. Abandonment of the administrative drawbacks V. Strengthening all staff and faculty’s sense of crisis     The case-study institute currently still has a certain teaching quality and scale, inspite that its enrollment rate is dropping and the quality is declining. The institute, though in view of this fact, remains conservative and maintains its current conditions. The competition is fierce but the institute’s traditional approach and conduct are as usual. The only way for them to gain the competitive edge will be enhancing its management efficacy. Our suggestion to the institute is that it should prioritize its customers’ needs and attract students to attend the school with the high-quality teaching facilities and excellent academic achievements, and proactively integrate on-campus resources and establish its own unique features so that students and parents will recognize and identify with the institute.

This study was an attempt to investigate the B.O.T performance of sports facilities in Ming Hsin Institute and the reason of choosing B.O.T, and to provide strategies of sports facilities B.O.T and management reference for other colleges. Questionnaire and deep visits were used in the study. Customers of the bowling hall and the swimming pool in the sports center of Ming Hsin Institute of Technology were the subjects. 884 student customers and 118 ordinary customers were the subjects of the questionnaires. Also, those in charge in the schools and private institutes were deeply visited. A self-administration investigation of satisfaction was employed for collecting data. Through descriptive statistics and t-test, the finding were as following: 1.Sex of student customers in day and evening schools made no difference in satisfaction with the bowling hall and the swimming pool. The satisfaction fell on the scale of normal. 2.Sex of ordinary customers made no difference in the satisfaction with the bowling hall. The satisfaction fell above the scale of satisfactory. 3.Sex of ordinary customers made no difference in the satisfaction with the swimming pool. The satisfaction fell between the scales of normal and satisfactory. 4.Those in charge Ming Hsin Institute of Technology held positive opinions on sports facilities BOT. 5.Managers of Fong-Gang Entertainment Co thought that the management performance did not achieve the planned goal. According to the findings, the suggestions of this study were as following: (1) Suggestions for:Fong-Gang Entertainment Co (I)They have to improve the related facilities of the bowling hall and the swimming pool to promote the service quality. (II)According to the different product life circles, they have to use different ways to attract people and to increase the customer values. (2) Suggestions for Ming Hsin Institute of Technology: (I)Both of them ensure their benefits in reasonable areas, and the private institute is able to run the facilities. (II)Based on the policy of Ministry of Education, bowling and swimming are put in the compulsory curriculum. This would help students form a good habit of lifetime exercise.

The objects of technician certification acquisition in the arm forces, not only enhance cadet’s practical skills, but also improve the overall logistics proficiency by the alumnus. The population of the study is the 150 cadets of the Air Force Institute of Technology in class 2008. The questionnaire forwarded to the whole cadets; the aspection of cadets regarding to technician certification would be acquired, and the motivation and studying satisfaction would be further analyze. The test results show that most of the cadets agree with this issue regarding to the studying motivation in description statistics. The training courses help to cadet’s eye opening, proficiency enhancement, and favor to the cadet’s job security. The test of population statistics shows that the metrology major cadets have highly expectation in certification. Machinery and information technology training are favored by the population in the certification category B and C hosted by the administration, and induce lots of attraction and interaction. There is no significant in the studying satisfaction. The test result shows the overall certification program is accepted. All the related training courses not only provide a multiple option for the cadets, but also enhance cadet’s proficiency.

Updating knowledge and learning of new skill is an essential part of the formal cycle of training in the organisation. It is crucial too as it allows for the learners to be aware of the recent developments and to use evidence-based practice in practice, all employees must be regularly trained regarding the new updates, evidence and other important information that can help them discharge their duties adequately. Therefore, to streamline learning amongst employees the LMS (learning management system) is being implemented by organisations across the globe. The LMS originates from the e- Learning system that was in use in the past. However today LMS has already been deployed in colleges and universities and many organisations also use LMS to train their employees and even help them be updated regarding the latest requirements, policies, and procedures. Learning Management Systems (LMSs) are an essential medium for facilitating learning activities in organisations. They offer several features, functionalities and are used in different organisational settings. The proposed study will examine the factors of usability that support effectiveness and learnability of LMS in a Victorian prison. The second objective of the research is to identify the users’ perception of flexibility and acceptability of LMS. The research methodology comprises of four stages process that adopts Design science research method. A case study design aligning with the qualitative approach is used to explore the usability factors in Victorian Prison. Semi-structured and focus group questionnaire is developed for the Prison’s staff in which the perceived usefulness and level of acceptance are analysed in case of the workplace. Data collection methods comprise of the past systematic review, semi-structured interviews and focus groups while thematic analysis approach is used to analyse data with the help of NVIVO 11. The four factors of usability- effectiveness, learnability, flexibility, and acceptability have been explored to evaluate the LMS usability in Victorian Prison. The administrators, Correctional officers and Managers are the main participants to evaluate the current training system. The research identifies the barriers to LMS implementation as Lack of communication, lack of knowledge, lack of technical support, lack of flexibility and overloaded irrelevant information. These results feed into the development of the Learning Model with the help of the Learning Grid. The contribution to research knowledge includes the creation of learning DSR Model findings derived from Round A, B and C analysis processes. The study has provided some initial insights to other researchers to conduct more studies which will be useful to not only the prisons that are being studied but also to others here in Australia and globally as it could make training systems more effective. This study also makes recommendations to the business on improvements of their current LMS.

Clerks of Courts in Victoria (today’s Court Registrars) occupied a relatively subordinate position within the public sector hierarchy. Despite the limited role envisaged for them by the Law Department and the statutory and administrative guidelines that framed their work, these court administrators exerted considerable influence within the busy summary jurisdiction. This thesis explores the nature of clerks of courts’ formal and informal discretionary power, and how such power evolved in the context of organisational, legal and social change culminating in the 1980s. Semi-structured interviews with registrars, former clerks, magistrates and judges were conducted to investigate the counter-intuitive concept of lower-level public servants exerting power and influence. Resulting data was analysed using primarily Michael Lipsky’s Street-level Bureaucrat framework. Findings show that, although flying under the radar, clerks were foundational and forceful actors in the provision and ongoing development of the summary court jurisdiction in Victoria. Their influence derived from a striking combination of factors: their nexus with the judiciary, their court craft and detailed knowledge of statute law, their community connections and status, and their sustained endeavour to self-organise and maintain a strong culture in the face of challenges to their role. These elements also influenced how clerks as a group and as individuals chose to employ discretion in delivering justice to citizens. At their best, they humanised and made procedurally fairer what could have been experienced as an alienating and inequitably weighted justice system.

abstract: This dissertation focuses on traditional arts at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) as a form of place-based education by asking the question, what is the role of traditional arts at IAIA? Through a qualitative study students, faculty, staff, and alumni were interviewed to gain their perspectives on education, traditional arts, and the role of traditional arts at IAIA. Through analysis of these interviews, it was found that participants viewed traditional arts as a form of place-based education and that these practices should play an important role at IAIA. This study also looks at critical geography and place-based practice as a form of anti-colonial praxis and an exercise of tribal sovereignty. Colonization restructures and transforms relationships with place. Neo-colonialism actively seeks to disconnect people from their relationship with the environment in which they live. A decline in relationship with places represents a direct threat to tribal sovereignty. This study calls on Indigenous people, and especially those who are Pueblo people, to actively reestablish relationships with their places so that inherent sovereignty can be preserved for future generations. This study also looks at the academic organization of IAIA and proposes a restructuring of the Academic Dean and Chief Academic Officer (AD&CAO) position to address issues of transition, efficiency, and innovation. The extensive responsibilities of this position cause several serious concerns. The policy paper proposes that the academic programs be divided thematically into 2 schools that will allow greater flexibility and adaptive practices to emerge out of the academic division at IAIA. The combination of restructuring the academic division at IAIA, my theoretical argument promoting place-based praxis as anti-colonial practice, and my research into the application of place-based programming at IAIA all support my overall goal of supporting Pueblo communities through my own work.

This research explores the development of the higher education in Taiwan. With the emergence of a childless society and the rapidly increasing numbers of higher education institutes, vocational institutes of technology are facing more crucial competition, localization and internationalization. These tendencies will certainly lead to decreasing sources of recruitment as well as serious problems caused by internationalization. Owing to lack of recruitment sources, some of the vocational education institutes will be unavoidably phased out in the next few years. Tendencies of low birthrates, intense competition among higher education institutes, pressures on school financial maintenance and surplus convince us that recruitment is the only solution to all these crises mentioned. To recruit students efficiently, we are expected to come up with new strategies for various occasions or requirements. However, it is imperative that we obtain supports related to manpower and finances from the organizations concerned. Using analysis on some isolated cases, the researcher examined and discussed the environment, development tendencies, thorny problems we confront. The researcher also provided some possible solutions and countermeasures when needed. At the end of the thesis, some suggestions and recommendations are offered for reference. The researcher hopes there details based experience and research may the beneficial to student recruiting activities and development in the future.

The research topic was the relationship between Campus Security Management of colleges and Perception of Campus Safety Climate of college students. The study samples were consisted of lnstitute of Technology in New Taipei City of Taiwan, and the researcher used two kinds of self-designed instruments: Campus Security Management Scale and Perception of Campus Safety Climate Scale as research questionnaire to investigate the performances with college students' background variables. Purposive sampling method was adapted, and there were 745 effective samples left. The main findings of the present study were summarized as follows: 1. The college students showed "middle-high" agreements with the utility of Campus Security Management, and the CSM scale revealed three dimensions including Maintenance of Equipment, Management of Crisis, and Measure of Service. 2. The college students showed "middle-high" performances at Perception of Campus Safety Climate, and the PCSC scale revealed four dimensions including Support of Security, Fear of Victimization, Sentience of Safety, and Consciousness of Environment. 3. The background variables including gender, the education and training about safety, and the experience of victimization, all of them revealed significant differences in the three dimensions of campus safety management. 4. The background variables of students including gender, the education and training about safety, and the experience of victimization, all of them revealed significant differences in the four dimensions of the perception of campus safety climate. 5. The background variables of school including Environmental consciousness, Fear of Victimization, Safe Sentience, reveal significant differences in the perception of three dimensions and the campus safety climate. 6. There was a predictive effect of Campus Safety Management to Perception of Campus Safety Climate. Three dimension of Campus Safety Management including Maintenance of Equipment, Management of Crisis, and Measure of Service had significant predictive power. 7. Variables of school background, college students' personal background, and Campus Safety Management could significant predict Perception of Campus Safety Climate.

The educational reforms implemented by the Department of Education during the last decade have resulted in a number of high profile public university mergers taking place in South Africa. The private higher education sector has simultaneously been significantly restructured by new educational legislation, to such an extent that a numerous private providers have been forced to cease operations due to the onerous requirements of the new laws. In this context, private higher education institutions are increasingly being compelled to consider alternative strategic options in order to continue to operate as viable entities. This study examined two private theological higher education institutions operating in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, and considered whether a merger of the two organisations would be advantageous in light of the pressures being faced by the institutions. The objectives of the study were to assess first, whether a merger of the two institutions would be feasible and second, whether it would be desirable. The study reviewed the literature relating to various forms of organisational co-operation , focusing particularly on mergers. The benefits associated with mergers were highlighted as well as the major causes of the extraordinarily high merger failure rate experienced in practice. The tendency of leaders of merging entities to overlook cultural and people issues when planning and implementing a merger was noted. Attention was given to the managerial approaches necessary to reduce the risk of merger failure. Factors specific to mergers within the non-profit and educational sectors were considered, focusing on structural options for multi-campus educational institutions in particular. The methodology used to address the research objectives called for the conducting of structured interviews with a sample of employees and Board or Council members from both institutions, as well as an examination of various institutional records. Employees of both institutions completed a simple questionnaire designed to provide data for an analysis of the respective organisational cultures of the two institutions. The findings of the study suggested that a merger between the institutions would be feasible, but that employees of the two organisations are not generally of the view that a merger would be desirable in the short term. There was however more support in principle for a merger in the medium to long term and the study consequently recommends that a joint task team be established to prepare a roadmap for the ultimate merger of the two institutions. In the short term it is recommended that a joint venture or strategic alliance be entered into by the two organisations primarily in order to test the compatibility of the two organisational cultures. Further recommendations cover issues such as the ideal structure for the merged entity and the process necessary to successfully manage the integration of two separate organisational cultures.

Increasing global competition and pressing social needs have impacted with such vigo~ that even tertiary institutions are now facing major financial constraints, thus forcing them to investigate alternative sources of income to maintain sustainability. Through the use of computer technology - searching, retrieving, sorting, producing and organising data efficiently and accurately - the belief is that many departments at the M L Sultan Campus of the Durban Institute of Technology can be converted into income-generating units that can be self-sustaining. There are many departments at the M L Sultan Campus with the relevant infrastructure and person-power to establish business units. These departments vary in the services that they provide, thus relevant information systems need to be aligned to future business units within these departments. This study focuses on a) investigating the impact of information technology and its systems on businesses; b) ensuring that information technology and its systems is looked at a~ a cost effective resource for maintaining a competitive edge and promoting business value. The interaction of business processes, people and technology will ensure successful planning and implementation of strategies within the potential business units; and c) recommending to selected departments the expected fmdings whereby they could choose to adopt these recommendations to transform themselves into business units in order to maintain a competitive edge for financial sustainability.
