Interactive aspects of communication include the following categories embodied in the metacommunicative elements of discourse, one of which is speech mode. The article focuses on pattern identification of communicative effect on the recipient by varying serious and humorous modes of the speech. The attention is paid to the identification of the initial strategies of communicative effect in both serious and humorous mode of English ideative speech. Communicative mode is an emotionally-stylistic communication format that occurs during the interaction between communicants and determines their changing attitudes and the choice of all means of communication. Serious mode orients the subjects of discourse to perceive communicative action as the one corresponding to norms. Humorous mode orients the subjects of discourse to perceive communicative action as the one inconsistent with norms. The paper gives results of inferential analysis of responsive actions on how successful the ideators’ speeches are according to the recipients’ instant and delayed responsive actions. The evaluation of communicative success has been conducted with the help of inferencial analysis of verbal and non-verbal actions of the audience taking into account instant and delayed responsive actions, in particular total number of the recording views, average monthly number of views; laughter, applause, cheers, murmur.

The article focuses on identification and description of the responsive strategies realized by the subjects of English ideation discourse. The term English ideation discourse encompasses a process and result of the communicants’ interaction in the social-cultural context of a public speech. The subjects of such a discourse are the ideator and the recipient(-s) who take part in the cognitive-communicative activity in order to accept and apply the idea that is the object of this interaction. The idea refers to a mental structure translated into verbal and non-verbal means of communication. The ideator’s global socially relevant communicative aim is to exert communicative influence on the recipients, so that they will put the idea into social action. This aim is achieved through the initial communicative strategies of informing, persuading and instructing that govern the sub-strategies: informative, informative-persuasive, persuasive, persuasive-instructive, and instructive. Sub-strategies are aimed at different spheres of the recipients’ consciousness – rational reasoning (informative, informative-persuasive), emotions (persuasive), volition (instructive) or at the subconsciousness (persuasive-instructive). Responsive communicative actions of the recipients are divided into instant (verbal: exclamations, short answers; non-verbal: laughter, applause, gestures) and delayed (verbal: rating an ideation speech by choosing three out of fourteen available adjectives of positive / negative evaluation; non-verbal: general and average monthly number of views of the video recording of an ideation speech). The study is pioneering a systematic cognitive-communicative methodology which reveals constitutive features of a new object of linguistic analysis – English ideation discourse – and provides the tool of inferential analysis to identify and describe rational, emotional, volitional communicative influence with relevant to this influence responsive strategies that are exerted by the subjects of the ideation discourse and are manifested in their verbal and non-verbal actions.

The article makes an attempt to characterise the act of eating as a communicative event and a cultural text: the analysis is based on the model of communication, theory of information and the general theory of signs. The main objective of the analysis is focused on reconstruction of the linguistic and cultural picture of eating in communication. In the description of the data, references are made to selected research methods and tools of linguistic semantics, particularly in its cultural variant. The data under consideration were initially limited to Polish linguaculture but in the course of analysis examples from other cultures were incorporated. While constructing a communicative model of eating, a basic distinction is made between the performer of an action (the eater) and the object of this action (the food). The analysis of the data reveals that apart from the verbally expressed information about who eats, what they eat, and how they do it. Another significant role in coding meaning is played by the accompanying non-verbal communication (eating-related sounds or the eater’s body language), as well as conventional signals replacing verbal formulas (communication through an arrangement of the cutlery, the dish itself or a specific manner of consumption).

The extremist statements are diverse and can be classified in a range of aspects: semantic, pragmatic and rhetorical. Analysis of expert practice enables to distinguish two semantic classes: statements about national/religious group and statements about nationalist ideology. In terms of pragmatism the statements are divided into the following types: calls for action against a group; statements about actions against a group and negative attitude to it; humiliation of group members; threat to group members. Apart from that constative statements are divided into two subgroups depending on their rhetorical structure: evaluative statements and statements containing justification for negative judgments. The content and pragmatic signs of “extremist” contexts can be found in various combinations limited by the features of a communicative situation. The article summarises expert practice on the study of extremist statements uttered primarily during interpersonal domestic disputes. It is shown that the variety of statements can be reduced to a finite list of features which are a special subject of the research.

AbstractTwenty-nine infants aged 1;1 and their mothers were videotaped while interacting with toys for 18 minutes. Six experimental stimuli were presented to elicit infant communicative bids in two communicative intent contexts – proto-declarative and proto-imperative. Mothers' verbal responses to infants' gestural and non-gestural communicative bids were coded for object and action labels. Relations between maternal labeling responses and infants' vocabularies at 1;1 and 1;5 were examined. Mothers' labeling responses to infants' gestural communicative bids were concurrently and predictively related to infants' vocabularies, whereas responses to non-gestural communicative bids were not. Mothers' object labeling following gestures in the proto-declarative context mediated the association from infants' gesturing in the proto-declarative context to concurrent noun lexicons and was the strongest predictor of subsequent noun lexicons. Mothers' action labeling after infants' gestural bids in the proto-imperative context predicted infants' acquisition of action words at 1;5. Findings show that mothers' responsive labeling explain specific relations between infants' gestures and their vocabulary development.

The article deals with a number of issues related to the morphology of the Russian verb. The research was performed according to the "objective grammar" of the Russian language in the framework of the Functional-Communicative Grammar (M.V. Vsevolodova's School). The aim of the study is to correlate the morphemic composition of the Russian verb and the meaning of "perfective aspect" vs. ‘imperfective aspect" forms of the verb, to distinguish the actual correlation of the aspects and the phenomenon of the methods of verbal action (the so-called characterized verbs). The author proceeds from the premise that a clear understanding of the aspect will improve the method of cross-lingual matching as well as make Russian classes more effective for non-Slavic speakers. The factors of linguistic relativity, their content and means of expression, predetermine a need for a comparative analysis of the lexical-grammatical category of the verbal form embracing the methods of verbal action as a means of expressing the category of verbal aspect and the possibilities of expressing similar meanings in Chinese. The functional-communicative approach allows for a linguodidactic description, relevant for the entire language system (objective grammar); a comparative approach will remove many of the linguistic barriers of a foreign student whose mother tongue is an analytic language.

The article is devoted to the problem of the functional structure of communicative action. Based on theoretical analysis and many years of pedagogical experience of working with children with affective pathology (autism spectrum disorders), the author recreates and refines the studies of cultural-historical theory and answers its main question — a method problem: the influence of holistic interfunctional analysis on overcoming semantic bias (central defect and syndrome-forming factor of psychopathology) and the development of a more universal communication form — verbal communication in non-speaking children with autism spectrum disorders in preschool age (by means of restructuring the way the impaired function is realized). The described conditions can be taken into account when constructing an intermediary (lively communicative action) both in the practice of general education (to prevent the occurrence of motivational disorders and increase the age limit) and in working with children with affective pathology (especially with children with autism spectrum disorders).

Particularly penitentiary discourse contribute to the problematic nature of verbal interaction, potential conflict communication. Characteristics of a penitentiary discourse are status and role positions of participants of communication, their psychological and cultural features, a communication regulation. In the course of speech interaction there can be communicative difficulties caused by psychological, world outlook, cultural distinctions of participants of basic couple. Involvement in a penitentiary discourse causes formation earlier not of peculiar models of speech behavior that allows to consider the convict as special type of the communicative personality. Influence on convictedfrom the employee of penitentiary institution assumes change of views, beliefs, behavior and can cause both passive, and active, including aggressive rejection. Therefore, at communication in the penitentiary discourse the probability of communicative failure is high. Features of a penitentiary discourse cause the problem nature of speech interaction, potentially conflict communication. Knowledge about the peculiarities of the prison discourse in a communicative aspect aimed at developing the ability to predict the response of the interlocutor to some action, to adjust their own speech behavior, select the desired method of exposure. Research of a penitentiary discourse from the standpoint of communication theory: definition of typical situations of emergence of difficulties in communication, differentiation of conflict and problem communication, the characteristic of the convict as communicative personality, identification and classification of communicative problems, their markers (communicative misses, mistakes) — can create theoretical base of professionally focused communicative training of staff of penitentiary institutions that will probably promote formation of professional competence.

The article presents the results of the analysis of the communicative strategy of criticism realized in the English cinema discourse. The research is done within the methodological framework of the cognitive-discursive approach to language where the criticism communicative strategy is viewed as a verbal / co-verbal expression of a negative assessment of a certain object (usually, a person) as demonstrating behaviour that deviates from the ontological (utilitarian) norms. The communicative intention of the subject of criticism is realised through verbal and co-verbal actions which interact on the principles of coordination. The verbal expression of criticism can be explicit, employing, among other means, negatively coloured nouns and adjectives, or implicit, employing rhetoric questions or any other linguistic units that can be interpreted as criticism in the situation of communication. Verbal utterances of criticism can be self-addressed to express self-criticism. The theoretical value of the research is determined by the implementation of the cognitive-discursive approach which makes it possible to analyse a speech strategy as a cognitive phenomenon, and its practical value is determined by the possibility of using the methodical technique developed in the paper to analyse other communicative strategies.

To speak a language or communicate with gestures means adapting a behavior determined by complex rules in a given communication situation. This research focuses on the occurrence of three conventional gestures: pointing, gestures of affirmation and negation. Using the classification of Searle and Vanderveken (1985), it also takes into account combinations of those gestures and speech acts that help the speaker convey their intention, combinations which also enable us to distinguish the gestures' various functions. The shift from the pre-linguistic to the linguistic stage has been under scrutiny, and we'll study how children use all their communicative abilities to express their mental state and reach their objectives by using different strategies in their interactions with adults. The theoretical frame on which this study is based relies on the works of Searle and Vanderverken (1985), Bernicot (1992, 1998), Bruner (2002), Kerbat-Orecchioni (2001) and Guidetti (2003). For this work, the data has been analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. There have been two phases in this work: first, we make a transversal analysis to observe the production of these elements in the interactions of six children aged between 18 months and six years old. The corpus has been divided into two age groups. Second, we've analyzed a case study to account for the diachronic evolution of the studied elements

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative condition which results in severe motor impairment. Deterioration in multiple domains of cognition is another hallmark of PD. Together, these motor and cognitive impairments impact substantially on language and communication. Co-speech gestures are a form of action and are also part of linguistic processes, yet have rarely been explored in PD. Gestures can provide imagistic depictions of concepts described by speech and contribute to communication in healthy individuals. They rely on visual, spatial, and motor simulations and imagery, which may be impaired in PD. It is therefore of clinical importance to evaluate how co-speech gestures might be impaired to understand the extent of communicative impairment in PD. PD can also provide a useful model to understanding the cognitive basis of co-speech gesture in healthy people. In Chapter 2, participants described isolated actions. Gesture rate did not differ between the two groups, however, the groups differed in terms of the visual perspective they adopted when depicting actions in gesture. Controls preferred a “character viewpoint” or first-person perspective where their hands represented the hands of the actor, whereas PD patients preferred an “observer viewpoint” or third-person perspective, where their hand represented a whole person. This finding was replicated and extended in Chapter 3 where low-motion and high-motion actions were described in a longer narrative task. PD patients produced fewer character viewpoint gestures when describing high-motion action events, suggesting a difficulty in simulating these events from a first-person perspective. In addition, PD patients had difficult depicting “manner” (how an action is performed) features in gesture during high but not low motion. Extending the findings of Chapter 2, whilst overall rate of gesture production was not affected, PD patients produced action gestures at a significantly lower rate than controls. Chapter 4 took a different focus by investigating gesture depictions of static spatial (rather than dynamic action) features via a house description task. Gesture rate did not differ, but the groups depicted different types of spatial properties to a different extent. Whilst both groups predominantly gestured about location and relative position information, PD patients gestured more about directions whereas controls gestures more about shape and size information. This suggests that different strategies were being employed by the two groups. Finally, testing young adults’ comprehension of these spatial gestures in Chapter 5 revealed that gestures did not significantly improve comprehension of either PD patients’ or controls’ spoken messages, though there may have been ceiling effects. However, both PD patients and controls were viewed as more competent when their messages were viewed with gestures. The findings suggest a selective action-gesture deficit in PD which complements work demonstrating action-verb impairments in these patients, and supports gesture production theories which hypothesise a role for motor simulations and imagery. Overall gesture rate appears to be largely unaffected. The effects of PD can be felt beyond changes to goal-directed action, in the realms of language and social behaviour, but gestures may be able to improve listeners’ social perceptions of PD patients.

The spontaneous manifestations of emotion are studied during a problem solving. The relations between variations of skin conductance and facial expressions with the solving events of failure and success are studied. We examine the modulation of these manifestations according to the social dimension of the situation and the stressing nature of the task. Our results highlight specific physiological and expressive variations in impasse situations and sub-goals reaching. They underline the relationship between the difficulties encountered in the solving and the spontaneous manifestations of the emotion. The results relating to the modulating elements of the emotional manifestations show the effect of social dimension on the physiological components of the emotion and the effect of the stressing nature of the task on the expressive components.
An augmentative and alternative communication method, Facilitated Communication (FC), raises serious questions regarding origin and therefore credibility of the texts produced by persons having autism. This controversy is partly due to confusion between two methods of facilitation: Facilitated Communication and Psychophany (a method derived from FC and mostly used in France). The present exploratory study aims at identifying origin of the messages produced via FC and Psychophany, and at differentiating these two methods. We first analyze systematically clinical video observations of 6 young non-verbal adults with autism, while practicing FC during regular sessions with their facilitators, and while modulating the psychomotor support of the subjects. Fine video analyses from 2 subjects show 39 clear clinical correlations between behaviors and texts are extracted from 7 sessions in one adult (Brice) and 20 correlations from 4 sessions in another adult Amar. Besides, when comparing two subjects, Brice and Carine, who are facilitated by the same facilitator, we show that the number of sentences produced do not differ significantly, whereas the total time of writing differs significantly. In the second study, Brice and his facilitator are studied more deeply through various tests, reading tests, message passing procedure and psychophysical tests using an accelerometer. Results seem to confirm our first ones showing a contribution of the subject, Brice, to the writing process. Our study confirms necessity distinguishing FC, during which the subjects partly control the writing process at visuo-motor levels, from Psychophany where the subjects apparently do not control anything

My dissertation, which lies within the framework of international linguistics, is about the interaction during meals among friends in invitations in France. Based on audio and video data recorded in naturally-occurring situations, this empirical study aims to show the modalities by which the participants co-construct the two main activities observed at table: eating and talking. Concerning eating, the study describes in detail the interactions since the eaters sit down at the table until they finish the meal. On the basis of verbal and multimodal analysis, this study brings out the linguistic and multimodal resources used by the hosts and the guests in order to make sure of the course of the meal. As for talking, this dissertation focuses on the assessment on the dishes served. The analysis shows that through the assessment on the dishes served, the speakers express their personal observation about the food, as well, they realize various actions such as complimenting, criticizing, self-complimenting and self-depreciating. The key issue of this study is to shed light on the principles seen but unnoticed by which the French speakers construct interaction at table

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the influence of a teacher's non-verbal communication and actio on students' motivation. Based on an ethnographic working method, a Swedish-language teacher at a high school was observed during four lessons in order to examine how the teacher communicated non-verbally with the students of the class. In parallel with the observations, interviews were conducted with the teacher and the students who participated in the survey. The survey showed that a teacher's non-verbal communication and actio has very high impact on the motivation of students, that this impact is immediate and that it can change during an on-going lesson. When a teacher becomes aware of how he or she communicates with students non-verbally, aspects such as non-intentional and intuitive communication have a lesser influence on the tuition. This, in turn, contributes to the development of the teacher's competence and capability to distribute his or her energy, thereby staying motivated and maintaining the ability to motivate students for the full duration of a lesson.

The effects of the Covid-19 pandemic has put applicants searching for work in a different position. Due to the pandemic restrictions, job interviews are held digitally at home where most body language comes out of sight from the camera.  The aim of the thesis is to determine how the new situation affects an applicant’s ability to establish a legitimate ethos non verbally. With a qualitative method, three recruiters were interviewed after observing an applicant’s actio in a pre-recorded digital interview and their attitudes towards the applicant were later analysed. The result show that the applicants non verbal behaviors affected the recruiters’ final idea about the applicants ethos. Wanted characteristics such as eye contact are still wanted although it is hard to achieve in the digital format. This leads to ethical dilemmas when for example rather small gestures or dull private backgrounds affect an individual's chance of employment. Conclusions show that improving skills in actio for digital meeting purposes will become a desired rhetorical competence as it will become a future requirement for employers.

Previous studies show that students are often expected to speak in front of a group, but they receive little guidance on how they should proceed. The aim of this essay is to contribute to the area by a critical examination of the advice and exercises that appear in six textbooks for the Swedish subject in upper secondary school. The study focuses solely on body language and voice ("actio") in oral presentations.       Through a qualitative text analysis, the study examines what is considered to characterize a good actio according to the textbooks and how students are expected to acquire these abilities. The essay also sheds light on how the content of textbooks can be understood in relation to the theory ”actiokapitalet” (Gelang, 2008). The result show that contact with the audience through gaze, variation in the use of voice and a lack of nervous expressions, is considered desirable. In the textbooks, students are often encouraged to develop actio through listening to feedback. Within actiokapitalet, a holistic perspective on actio is emphasized, as well as the fact that body language and the use of voice depend on the social context. The content of the books can both be considered compatible with, and deviating from, the theory. In the concluding discussion, I claim that ”actiokapitalet” contributes with an in-depth perspective on the textbooks and I call for further studies where the theory is tested in teaching.

Inner speech lies at the chaotic intersection of numerous difficult questions in contemporary philosophy and psychology. On the one hand, inner speech utterances are private mental events of a kind. On the other, they resemble speech acts of the sort used in interpersonal communication. Thought and its linguistic expression appear to overlap. Further, inner speech is at once imagistic in nature, having a characteristic auditory-verbal phenomenology; yet it also appears suitable to carrying complex linguistic contents. In another apparent clash, inner speech episodes seem to constitute or express sophisticated trains of conceptual thought; yet, at the same time, they are deeply motoric in nature, drawing on mechanisms for speech production and perception more generally. Also, in using inner speech, we seem able both to regulate our bodily actions and, arguably, to gain a unique kind of access to our own beliefs and desires. Finally, disorders as “thought insertion” and auditory verbal hallucinations are plausibly explicable in terms of the malfunctioning of mechanisms governing speech production and perception. But there is still little on what those mechanisms are, nor in how they might be involved. This interdisciplinary volume—comprising twelve chapters by philosophers, psychologists, and neuroscientists—capitalizes on growing interest in the many questions surrounding inner speech and presents a range of new theories concerning both its nature and location within these important debates.

Hearing loss is devastating because it prevents communication through verbal language and thereby produces social isolation. The experience of hearing loss or deafness is the most common sensory deficit. The experience of affected individuals is highly variable because it depends on age of onset and treatment efficacy, among many factors. The roles of the external and middle ears in conduction and of the internal ear in sensorineural processing are used as a framework for understanding common forms of hearing loss. The contributions of inner and outer hair cells to cochlear function are detailed. How cochlear amplification results from the actions of prestin in outer hair cells is explained. The roles of age, noise, genetic background, and environmental factors in presbyacusis are considered. Approaches to hearing loss, including cochlear implants and sign language, are discussed. Finally, the brain regions involved in speech production and comprehension are detailed.

Nonverbal cues are important elements of persuasive communication whose influence in political debates are receiving renewed attention. Recent advances in political debate research have been driven by biologically grounded explanations of behavior that draw on evolutionary theory and view televised debates as contests for social dominance. The application of biobehavioral coding to televised presidential debates opens new vistas for investigating this time-honored campaign tradition by introducing a systematic and readily replicated analytical framework for documenting the unspoken signals that are a continuous feature of competitive candidate encounters. As research utilizing biobehavioral measures of presidential debates and other political communication progresses, studies are becoming increasingly characterized by the use of multiple methodologies and merging of disparate data into combined systems of coding that support predictive modeling.Key elements of nonverbal persuasion include candidate appearance, communication style and behavior, as well as gender dynamics that regulate candidate interactions. Together, the use of facial expressions, voice tone, and bodily gestures form uniquely identifiable display repertoires that candidates perform within televised debate settings. Also at play are social and political norms that govern candidate encounters. From an evaluative standpoint, the visual equivalent of a verbal gaffe is the commission of a nonverbal expectancy violation, which draws viewer attention and interferes with information intake. Through second screens, viewers are able to register their reactions to candidate behavior in real time, and merging biobehavioral and social media approaches to debate effects is showing how such activity can be used as an outcome measure to assess the efficacy of candidate nonverbal communication during televised presidential debates.Methodological approaches employed to investigate nonverbal cues in presidential debates have expanded well beyond the time-honored technique of content analysis to include lab experiments, focus groups, continuous response measurement, eye tracking, vocalic analysis, biobehavioral coding, and use of the Facial Action Coding System to document the muscle movements that comprise leader expressions. Given the tradeoffs and myriad considerations involved in analyzing nonverbal cues, critical issues in measurement and methodology must be addressed when conducting research in this evolving area. With automated coding of nonverbal behavior just around the corner, future research should be designed to take advantage of the growing number of methodological advances in this rapidly evolving area of political communication research.

In Strait Rituals: China, Taiwan, and the United States and in the Taiwan Strait Crises, 1954-1958, this book argues that the Taiwan Strait Crises could be understood as an evolution towards tacit accommodation. Exploiting new materials from mainland China, Taiwan and the United States, a reevaluation of the international relations of all three parties via a simultaneous presentation of their disparate perspectives is made. At the heart of its argument, this book proposes that conflict resolution had become ritualized progressively as the protagonists implicitly constructed a framework of understanding. An uneasy peace was thus a product of a ritualization of discourses and maneuvers, embodied in verbal signaling and symbolic gestures. These exacting understandings laid the groundwork for a substantive change in the nature of Sino-American relations - from hostile nuclear confrontation in 1954 to tacit accommodation in 1958. In particular, this book highlights relevant aspects of “culture” to better understand the intricacies of the Sino-US-ROC relations. This aspect complements existing scholarship on realism, strategy, economics, ideology and domestic aspects of the Taiwan Strait crises. Strait Rituals will show the significance of “ritualization” in explaining the transition of “tacit communication” to “tacit accommodation.” It will demonstrate how both parties engaged in ritualized actions that facilitated the process of conflict resolution. Strait Rituals will establish how the US and China achieved a limited but shared understanding of the modus operandi of the other party through their ritualized actions in terms of their use of public symbols, identity issues, cultural images and official discourses on one hand, and military posturing, diplomatic canvassing for international support, and negotiations on the other hand.

The primate prefrontal cortex sits at the top of the sensory, motor, and outcome processing hierarchies of the neocortex. It transforms sensory inputs into motor outputs, determining the response that is appropriate given the current context and desired outcome. This transformation involves conditional rules. The dorsal prefrontal cortex supports the learning of behavioural sequences, where the next action is conditional on the previous one. The ventral prefrontal cortex supports associations between objects, where the choice of one object is conditional on the presence of another object. However, because hierarchical processing supports the extraction of abstract representations, the primate prefrontal cortex is able to represent conditional rules that are abstract, meaning that they apply irrespective of the specific inputs. The selective advantage is that by learning these rules, primates can solve new problems rapidly when they have the same conditional logic as prior problems. The human prefrontal cortex has the same fundamental organization as in other primates. The dorsal prefrontal cortex supports the understanding of sequences and the ventral prefrontal cortex supports the ability to learn semantic associations. Thus the human prefrontal cortex has co-opted and elaborated mechanisms that were present in ancestral primates. These mechanisms can be used for new ends. For example, words have been associated with objects so as to communicate with others. This means that to understand human intelligence it is necessary to take into account the fact that the abstract rules are transmitted verbally from one generation to another.

The monograph reflects the problems of Russian psycholinguistics from the moment of its inception in Russia to the present day and presents its main directions that are currently developing. In addition, theoretical developments and practical results obtained in the framework of different directions and research centers are described in a concise form. The task of the book is to reflect, as far as it is possible in one edition, firstly, the history of the formation of Russian psycholinguistics; secondly, its methodology and developed methods; thirdly, the results obtained in different research centers and directions in different regions of Russia; fourthly, to outline the main directions of the further development of Russian psycholinguistics. There is no doubt that in the theoretical, methodological and applied aspects, the main problems and the results of their development by Russian psycholinguistics have no analogues in world linguistics and psycholinguistics, or are represented by completely original concepts and methods. We have tried to show this uniqueness of the problematics and the methodological equipment of Russian psycholinguistics in this book. The main role in the formation of Russian psycholinguistics was played by the Moscow psycholinguistic school of A.A. Leontyev. It still defines the main directions of Russian psycholinguistics. Russian psycholinguistics (the theory of speech activity - TSA) is based on the achievements of Russian psychology: a cultural-historical approach to the analysis of mental phenomena L.S. Vygotsky and the system-activity approach of A.N. Leontyev. Moscow is the most "psycholinguistic region" of Russia - INL RAS, Moscow State University, Moscow State Linguistic University, RUDN, Moscow State Pedagogical University, Moscow State Pedagogical University, Sechenov University, Moscow State University and other Moscow universities. Saint Petersburg psycholinguists have significant achievements, especially in the study of neurolinguistic problems, ontolinguistics. The most important feature of Russian psycholinguistics is the widespread development of psycholinguistics in the regions, the emergence of recognized psycholinguistic research centers - St. Petersburg, Tver, Saratov, Perm, Ufa, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Voronezh, Yekaterinburg, Kursk, Chelyabinsk; psycholinguistics is represented in Cherepovets, Ivanovo, Volgograd, Vyatka, Kaluga, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Vladivostok, Abakan, Maikop, Barnaul, Ulan-Ude, Yakutsk, Syktyvkar, Armavir and other cities; in Belarus - Minsk, in Ukraine - Lvov, Chernivtsi, Kharkov, in the DPR - Donetsk, in Kazakhstan - Alma-Ata, Chimkent. Our researchers work in Bulgaria, Hungary, Vietnam, China, France, Switzerland. There are Russian psycholinguists in Canada, USA, Israel, Austria and a number of other countries. All scientists from these regions and countries have contributed to the development of Russian psycholinguistics, to the development of psycholinguistic theory and methods of psycholinguistic research. Their participation has not been forgotten. We tried to present the main Russian psycholinguists in the Appendix - in the sections "Scientometrics", "Monographs and Manuals" and "Dissertations", even if there is no information about them in the Electronic Library and RSCI. The principles of including scientists in the scientometric list are presented in the Appendix. Our analysis of the content of the resulting monograph on psycholinguistic research in Russia allows us to draw preliminary conclusions about some of the distinctive features of Russian psycholinguistics: 1. cultural-historical approach to the analysis of mental phenomena of L.S.Vygotsky and the system-activity approach of A.N. Leontiev as methodological basis of Russian psycholinguistics; 2. theoretical nature of psycholinguistic research as a characteristic feature of Russian psycholinguistics. Our psycholinguistics has always built a general theory of the generation and perception of speech, mental vocabulary, linked specific research with the problems of ontogenesis, the relationship between language and thinking; 3. psycholinguistic studies of speech communication as an important subject of psycholinguistics; 4. attention to the psycholinguistic analysis of the text and the development of methods for such analysis; 5. active research into the ontogenesis of linguistic ability; 6. investigation of linguistic consciousness as one of the important subjects of psycholinguistics; 7. understanding the need to create associative dictionaries of different types as the most important practical task of psycholinguistics; 8. widespread use of psycholinguistic methods for applied purposes, active development of applied psycholinguistics. The review of the main directions of development of Russian psycholinguistics, carried out in this monograph, clearly shows that the direction associated with the study of linguistic consciousness is currently being most intensively developed in modern Russian psycholinguistics. As the practice of many years of psycholinguistic research in our country shows, the subject of study of psycholinguists is precisely linguistic consciousness - this is a part of human consciousness that is responsible for generating, understanding speech and keeping language in consciousness. Associative experiments are the core of most psycholinguistic techniques and are important both theoretically and practically. The following main areas of practical application of the results of associative experiments can be outlined. 1. Education. Associative experiments are the basis for constructing Mind Maps, one of the most promising tools for systematizing knowledge, assessing the quality, volume and nature of declarative knowledge (and using special techniques and skills). Methods based on smart maps are already widely used in teaching foreign languages, fast and deep immersion in various subject areas. 2. Information search, search optimization. The results of associative experiments can significantly improve the quality of information retrieval, its efficiency, as well as adaptability for a specific person (social group). When promoting sites (promoting them in search results), an associative experiment allows you to increase and improve the quality of the audience reached. 3. Translation studies, translation automation. An associative experiment can significantly improve the quality of translation, take into account intercultural and other social characteristics of native speakers. 4. Computational linguistics and automatic word processing. The results of associative experiments make it possible to reveal the features of a person's linguistic consciousness and contribute to the development of automatic text processing systems in a wide range of applications of natural language interfaces of computer programs and robotic solutions. 5. Advertising. The use of data on associations for specific words, slogans and texts allows you to predict and improve advertising texts. 6. Social relationships. The analysis of texts using the data of associative experiments makes it possible to assess the tonality of messages (negative / positive moods, aggression and other characteristics) based on user comments on the Internet and social networks, in the press in various projections (by individuals, events, organizations, etc.) from various social angles, to diagnose the formation of extremist ideas. 7. Content control and protection of personal data. Associative experiments improve the quality of content detection and filtering by identifying associative fields in areas subject to age restrictions, personal information, tobacco and alcohol advertising, incitement to ethnic hatred, etc. 8. Gender and individual differences. The data of associative experiments can be used to compare the reactions (and, in general, other features of thinking) between men and women, different social and age groups, representatives of different regions. The directions for the further development of Russian psycholinguistics from the standpoint of the current state of psycholinguistic science in the country are seen by us, first of all:  in the development of research in various areas of linguistic consciousness, which will contribute to the development of an important concept of speech as a verbal model of non-linguistic consciousness, in which knowledge revealed by social practice and assigned by each member of society during its inculturation is consolidated for society and on its behalf;  in the expansion of the problematics, which is formed under the influence of the growing intercultural communication in the world community, which inevitably involves the speech behavior of natural and artificial bilinguals in the new object area of psycholinguistics;  in using the capabilities of national linguistic corpora in the interests of researchers studying the functioning of non-linguistic and linguistic consciousness in speech processes;  in expanding research on the semantic perception of multimodal texts, the scope of which has greatly expanded in connection with the spread of the Internet as a means of communication in the life of modern society;  in the inclusion of the problems of professional communication and professional activity in the object area of psycholinguistics in connection with the introduction of information technologies into public practice, entailing the emergence of new professions and new features of the professional ethos;  in the further development of the theory of the mental lexicon (identifying the role of different types of knowledge in its formation and functioning, the role of the word as a unit of the mental lexicon in the formation of the image of the world, as well as the role of the natural / internal metalanguage and its specificity in speech activity);  in the broad development of associative lexicography, which will meet the most diverse needs of society and cognitive sciences. The development of associative lexicography may lead to the emergence of such disciplines as associative typology, associative variantology, associative axiology;  in expanding the spheres of applied use of psycholinguistics in social sciences, sociology, semasiology, lexicography, in the study of the brain, linguodidactics, medicine, etc. This book is a kind of summarizing result of the development of Russian psycholinguistics today. Each section provides a bibliography of studies on the relevant issue. The Appendix contains the scientometrics of leading Russian psycholinguists, basic monographs, psycholinguistic textbooks and dissertations defended in psycholinguistics. The content of the publications presented here is convincing evidence of the relevance of psycholinguistic topics and the effectiveness of the development of psycholinguistic problems in Russia.

The article focuses on the main uses of secondary imperfective verbs with the suffix -yva-/-iva- in Early East Slavic texts dated 11th-14th centuries. The verbs with this suffix are used in all different contexts where the imperfective verbal aspect is required. The examples from the texts show a more frequent occurrence of the verbal forms with the suffix in dialogues, that is in passages involving oral communication contexts. Only in the later centuries the suffix will also take the particular function of expressing the “iterative mode of action” (iterativnyj sposob dejstvija).

This chapter considers how the absence of certain aspects of non-verbal behaviouraffects interaction in audio-graphical learning environments. The authors introducestrategies to deal with turn-taking, time lag and other incidences, while observing thedifficulty in applying the communicative approach to language teaching in thesesettings. By highlighting the limited validity of an extrapolation of methodologiesbetween face-to-face and virtual classrooms, we call for research to address the needfor a new course of action; one that takes full advantage of the technology in its ownright.

As many educational institutions become more globally competitive, and the number of diverse teachers increases, it becomes even more imperative to avoid what some cultures might deem as inappropriate and unprofessional verbal and non-verbal forms of communication. Those behaviors are sometimes interpreted in different ways, depending on the cultural perspective. Any unwanted verbal and non-verbal actions often increase stress, unwelcomed job pressures, and hinder a positive work environment. At the institutional level where teachers are very diverse, understanding verbal and nonverbal behaviors must be addressed. The researchers propose a methodology which will help multilingual, multicultural teachers' communication styles within the workplace and how to improve cross-cultural team collaborations. Additionally, the information provided in this study allows educational leaders to make inferences about their teachers' team performance and expectations based on their motivation, experiences, and skills used when working with a multicultural team.

This consequently affects the control we have over our own life and impacts on mental health. Communication is dynamic, whereby we adapt what we are saying and how we are saying it in response to what another person is saying and how. This negotiation goes on throughout the interaction and when successful, can lead to multifaceted meaning that is understood by both parties. The history of communications between people (what each one knows about the other and about communicating with the other), as well as what is currently happening around us, how we are feeling at that moment, and our reasons for communicating, will all impact on how effective our communication will be....

Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT) allows us to manage our personal and social identities. According to the theory, people adjust speech, vocal patterns, and gestures to help promote mutual understanding in communication (Gallois & Giles, 2015). CAT helps us examine how to emphasize or minimize the differences between ourselves and others during verbal and non-verbal interactions. Language, context, identity, and intergroup and interpersonal factors are used in this theory to make interaction adjustments. Interpersonal control, interpretability, discourse management, and emotional expression are CAT strategies. There are also several supporting approaches that can help manage communication and adjust to receiver reaction including organizational dynamics, active listening, developing the leader within, style diversity, and ongoing self-assessment. The chapter concludes with information on building individual and team trust.

Elizabeth Bishop, who believed poetry should communicate through action rather than stasis, learned this dynamism from Gerard Manley Hopkins. From “Dear Hopkins,” as she called him, Bishop learned about rhythmic variation and verbal energy, and these informed her own belief that poetry should give the impression of a mind thinking rather than of conveying settled thought. Bishop first developed these ideas in an undergraduate paper she wrote about Hopkins, which formed the foundation of her own poetic philosophy and also refined her poetic sensibilities. Like Hopkins, Bishop was also drawn to Ignatius of Loyola’s Spiritual Exercises as a means to self, and poetic, discipline, and her mature poems continue to echo her earliest poetic mentor.

Agency refers to the capacity to act and act upon, to initiate and carry out actions either for their own sakes or to influence and affect others. The concept is often invoked in music studies, but the nature and types of actions and agents are defined differently in various research frameworks. This study integrates sociocultural and metaphorical approaches to investigate the interactions between work and performer agencies in the verbal communication and gestural exchanges that take place during ensemble rehearsal. The chapter begins with an overview of current theories of musical agency and traces their implications for research on ensemble music-making. Next, using conversational segments drawn from two empirical case studies of professional string quartets as illustrations, the chapter considers agential roles and ascriptions that are not accounted for in current paradigms. In closing, the chapter explores the theoretical implications of the research outcome and proposes a new critical perspective.

Beyond being a shelter, houses are such structures which obtain meanings shaped by the influence of culture, particularly reflecting the society’s socio-cultural structure. As a time-khronos and space-topos pattern, the houses reflect the characteristics of the culture or ethnic group which they are part of, while on the other hand, they reflect the images of the individual’s essence as a communicative action. The effect of climate and typology, which are physical components of culture, as well as social components of culture, such as value systems, belief, lifestyle and habits, are cardinal factors in the formation of traditional houses. In this respect, traditional structures are visual representation spaces that narrates their own story, like verbal culture, and they convey their unique codes through visuality. This study, which discusses traditional architecture as a cultural text, aims to reveal traditional Urfa houses through analytical readings, within the context of visual semiology.. The samples selected within the scope of the study will be evaluated according to the context of stylistic features they are part of, such as plan and spatial perspective, the location of the houses, and detections regarding the visual culture will be discussed through the cultural and architectural design approach of Umberto Eco.

Intercultural communication refers to interaction between speakers of different backgrounds, such as different linguistic and cultural origins (Kim 2001). Interaction in face-to face situations has demonstrated that spoken language involves both verbal and semiotic resources for social action. Semiotic resources that include use of talk, gestures, eye gaze and other nonverbal cues can convey semantic content and can become a crucial point in conversation (Hazel et al. 2014). Drawing on a Aonversation Analysis (CA) approach, we explore how participants employed semiotic resources in word searches activities in an intercultural context. Word searches are moments in interaction when a speaker’s turn is temporarily ceased as the speaker displays difficulty in searching for appropriate linguistic items so as to formulate the talk (Schegloff et al. 1977; Kurhila 2006). In this study, naturally occurring interactions in a multilingual setting were video recorded. The participants were Asian university students with different language backgrounds. The findings suggest that multilingual participants mutually collaborate by utilizing verbal affordances, gaze, gesture and other nonverbal cues as useful semiotic resources in the meaning-making process, and thus resolving word search impediments to facilitate intercultural interaction.

The article discusses the architectural basis of the cross-platform onboard software for navigation and communication satellites. The functional characteristics of the designed software components are the queues used, the ports, the supported hardware, and the low-level inter-hardware communication protocols. The verbal description of the selected area of knowledge and the formalization of relations between individual entities allows you to move from the architectural basis, limited by physical parameters and the environment for the functioning of software tools, to a descriptive model, which served as the basis for a relational database. An identification method is proposed for unambiguously identifying a specific component of the on-board software with the possibility of performing further actions on it, for example, archiving, retrieving, duplicating, etc. An onboard software component is viewed as a complex entity that contains not only program code, but also a number of attributes that are used during operation. The structural diagram of a relational database is presented. This structure unites and links both information about software components and the electronic document management tool as a whole.

There has been a recent increase of interest in the phenomenon of power amongst linguists and also philosophers. The presented article attempts to consider power and ways in which it is exercised through language of computer-mediated communication (further CMC). This unique environment is determined by the specific conditions of an Internet chat room, such as anonymity and no audio-visual cues. In the theoretical part, Watts’s and Diamond’s investigations of power in various open and closed groups in oral communication are discussed and the notion of status is presented. The author divides the chat group corpus into individual sub-groups and tries to draw a graphical presentation, a sociogram, to show their complexity and distribution of power. However, the question remains how tight the sub-groups in CMC are or how interrelated they are with one another. In this respect, it is noteworthy to observe how a selected chat participant develops her status in various sub-groups and to analyze the means by which this possible status is achieved. The corpus was collected by the author herself. The main hypothesis is that the status of power changes quickly throughout chatting and it depends to a great extent on other cues such as address, non-verbal action displays, punctuation marks and so on. In other words, there are very few means by which to exercise power and hold it in this continuously changing and anonymous environment.

The study was conducted to analyze the dialogue patterns of the physics learning process on static fluid material using Transcript Based Lesson Analysis (TBLA) in SMA Negeri 3 Pontianak. The study uses qualitative research methods in the form of descriptive research. The study used a purposive sampling technique to select the sample so that class XI IPA 5 was chosen with 38 students. The research instrument was an observation sheet (field notes). The technique of data collection was in the form of documentation and observation. The first data analysis was interpreting the learning process into a full verbal transcript obtained from audio and video recording, then analyzing the appropriate dialogue pattern. Based on the data analysis, the form of dialogue pattern learning in cycle 1 was a two-way communication pattern with a teacher speech average percentage of 7.70% and students’ speech average percentage of 7.70%, which indicated a balance between teachers and students. While in cycle 2, classically also used a two-way communication with a teacher speech average percentage of 8.34% and students’ speech average percentage of 8.33%. It indicated that the teacher and students are equally active. Then, in cycle 2, there was a three-way communication with a teacher's average percentage of 1.13% and students' speech average percentage of 1.74%. There was a reciprocal relationship between teachers and students, but students tend to be more active. The teacher can use the analytical method using Transcript Based Lesson Analysis (TBLA) to analyze teaching and learning processes in the classroom.

Modern Tibetan has a paradigm of evidential verb forms, with the help of which the speaker indicates the source of information or their access to it. The semantically marked testimonial evidentiality (which corresponds to sensory sources of information about the fact of the utterance) can be used by the speaker to implement various communicative intensions, in particular, emotional-evaluative intension. This article presents the results of a study of speaker’s expression of emotional-evaluative intension using the forms of testimonial evidentiality in Modern Literary Tibetan. The relevance of the work is based on the insufficient study of how Tibetan speakers express communicative intensions and how evidentiality is implemented in written Modern Tibetan. The analysis was carried out on a morphosyntactically marked corpus of 83,018 tokens combining 20 texts of various genres of fiction, academic and journalistic writing in Modern Tibetan. A speaker was understood as any addresser of an utterance in direct speech and first person narration parts of the text (author, literary character, lyrical subject). For the selection and analysis of utterances with an emotional-evaluative intension, contextual analysis was used, characterizing the addresser, addressee and the object of the utterance, speech situation, as well as the meaning of the verb form in the scope of the operational context. The analysis showed that when expressing emotional- evaluative intension with the help of testimonial evidentiality, the speaker emphasizes one of the aspects of the meaning of this type of evidentiality: 1) objective or perceptual lack of control over the observed action or situation by the speaker; 2) direct evidence of the fact of the utterance as a source for an unaddressed emotional state; 3) direct observation of the speaker as an evidence for assessing and validating the reliability of the reported fact. The article provides information on the evidential system of the Tibetan language and the most common communicative intensions formalized by testimonial evidentiality, as well as discusses in detail individual cases of expressing emotional-evaluative intension along with the analysis of the speaker’s communicative position and his choice of means of expression. Modern linguistics studies the combination of particles with notional words as a periphrastic construction which has a constant structure and semantics and is also regularly used in Russian spoken speech. The paper presents the analysis of the meaning of the analytical syntactic structure with a particle tchut’ ne (‘almost’) which implements subjective modality in the proposal and has a high emotionality and expression. Studying the features of the meaning, structure and grammar of the periphrastic construction tchut’ ne + V in the context of a sentence is the purpose of the article. In this paper the context is perceived in a narrow sense as a linguistic environment in which any given linguistic unit is used. With little emphasis having been put on the context, the existing works have mainly been focused on the meaning of the action which is close to completion, yet not fulfilled due to uncontrollability, surprise and suddenness of the situation. Test material analysis revealed that constructions with a particle almost do not only have a proximative meaning but also a contextually determined one, i. e., the maximum exaggeration of physical states and emotions of the subject (almost died of laughter etc.) and the controlled choice (almost said). Desemantization of verbs and the inclusion in the periphrastic construction of causatives provide a new meaning to it. Such type constructions as almost died from laughter, almost said become idiomatic. The article concludes that the contextual environment and communication goals affect the semantics of the periphrastic construction almost + V. Refs 22.

This paper presents the process and outcomes of the pilot introduction of Functional Analysis Diagram (FAD) as a design assist tool within a Small Medium Enterprise (SME). During this study, two sets of Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA) sessions were conducted using the traditional and the proposed, FAD assisted (FMEA-FAD) method developed, aiming to optimize the failure mode selection phase of the process. The results have shown that the FMEA-FAD method has significantly improved the efficiency and the effectiveness of the process. They were also consistent with previous research, suggesting that FAD is relatively easy to use, supports high levels of understanding through functional decomposition, and can be used as an interdisciplinary communication platform (Aurisicchio et al., 2011). Given the resource limitations in SMEs, such an efficiency improvement could be vital for a resource intensive process such as FMEA. FAD discourages disciplinary terminologies in function descriptions; instead, the functions can be represented simply by the combination of an active verb and a measurable noun. Breaking the system down into lower level subsystems and studying the functional interrelationships between system components, can help us understand the overall system functions (Pahl et al., 1996). As market needs are mostly determined based on past user experience (Norman, 2010), innovation commonly occurs incrementally. Although this practice reduces risks — being, as it is, based on already tested platforms, incremental innovation often leads to the retention of superfluous components and outdated technologies. The process of functional modeling prompts the users to question the existence of every component and feature within a product or process, potentially leading to a radical reassessment of a design against the need which created it.

Journalistic communication is professional, its purpose is to obtain information and share it withthe audience. A journalist communicates when he intends to receive information directly from the interlocutor, from documents that the interlocutor has, or by observing the behavior of the interlocutor during the conversation. The most common method is communication in order to obtain verbal information. In the course of communication, a journalist succeeds when he adheres to politeness, clarity, brevity. It is important that the conditions of communication must be prepared or created: a place of communication, participants of communication, demonstration of listening skills, feedback. You should always try to get documentary evidence of what you have heard. An active reaction to what is heard by the journalist should be used to find out how much the interlocutor understands what is being said. At the beginning of the conversation, when the interlocutor expresses his attitude to the event or problem in question, it should not be interrupted. A journalist, like most people, often makes two mistakes when communicating: perceives as truth what is presented and attributes characteristics. Attribution of the characteristic as a psychological error is known since the beginning of the last century. And the perception of everything as the truth has long been inherent in our society.
