La formation des noms qui dèrivent d'un verbe n'est pas une chose simple. Ce qui rend la complexité de ce type de dérivation apparente, la mise en œuvre de plusieurs stratégies morphologiques. Notre travail sera consacré à l'étude de la structure des noms verbaux du berbère de ksar Tit n'Ali au sein du cadre théorique de la phonologie autosegmentale, et plus particulièrement du modèle CVCV (Lowenstam 1996)
This thesis contributes to the study about nouns related to verbs of the berber language spoken in Ksar Tit n’Ali (a region located on the Valley of High Guir in southern Morocco). This work aims to show, firstly, the nouns derived from verbs considered “common”or “normal” which refer to an action, in this case: action nouns, agent nouns and instrument nouns. Secondly, the verbs derived from stative verbs, especially: quality nouns and nouns we called unofficially stative nouns. As we analysed the collected informations, we found out that the existence of plenty of verbal roots and the implementation of several strategies makes this derivational operation very far from being clear. Our goal is to demonstrate the various mechanisms operated to reconcile between a - concatenative- external morphology and internal morphology -non concatenative- in order to achieve a pattern. We aim to clear the final templatic scheme that is subject to major constraints on the lexicon or the result of a morphological process. In addition, given the importance of the left site in the derivation of nominal units, we devoted a chapter to the question of the initial vowel equipment and its relationship with the passage from free status of an item to its status of annexation. Starting from the findings of predecessors and analyzing the elements of the spoken language, which is the object of our research, we realize fertility of linguistic literature in this case has not resolved our problematic completely

This study addresses the French morphological construction [VN/A/Adv/P]N/A. The main objectives are to posit a single rule for its formation and to question the implications of the agent polysemy. The theoretical framework is lexeme-based morphology, which adheres to weak lexicalism. The first part of our analysis is qualitative and concerns the availability aspect of productivity. The method is introspective. The internal semantic patterns of the French construction are examined. Our results give evidence for the claim that a single morphological construction rule, [VN/A/Adv/P]N/A, is responsible for the cases where the first constituent is a verb stem, and the second constituent may correspond to an internal argument, an external argument or a semantic adjunct. All cases manifest the same patterns, which are related to the denotative meanings included in the agent polysemy: Agent, Instrument, Locative, Action, Result and Cause. Our contrastive analysis shows that the same patterns are found in the four Swedish agentive formations, [N/A/Adv/PV-are]N, [N/A/Adv/PV]N, [N/A/Adv/PV-a]N and [VN]N, which correspond to the French [VN/A/Adv/P]N/A construction and which also contain a verbal constituent and its internal or external argument, or an adjunct. The second part of our analysis is quantitative and concerns the profitability aspect of productivity. The method is inductive. The aim is to explore the polysemy of agent and its assumed hierarchical structure, in synchrony and diachrony. Four French agentive formations, [VN/A/Adv/P]N/A compounds and V-ant, V-eur and V-oir(e) derivations, are included in order to examine semantic competition and blocking effects. Our results give evidence for the existence of an agent polysemy but deny that it has a hierarchical structure valid for every agentive formation. The meanings in the agent polysemy are more or less profitable according to formation type: blocking effects could explain this behaviour.

The translation of Denominal verbs is not enough analyze in Lithania, thus, the work specifies some definitions of the phenomena, provides its derivation and classifications as well as emphasizes the pecularities of denominal verb in translation process. The subject of the research is based on contrastive analyzes of source and target languages by reffering to Ken Kesey‘s novel ‚ One Flew over Cuckoo‘s Nest‘. The aim of the work is point out pecularities of denominal verbs in tralslation of the novel from English into Lithuanian.

Tyrimo tikslu siekiama nustatyti denominatyvinių veiksmažodžių ypatumus verčiant šį romaną iš anglų kalbos į lietuvių kalbą.

The present thesis investigated two questions: (1) is there a correspondence between lexico-semantic categories like object and syntactic categories like noun in acquisition, and (2) can the late emergence of action nouns be explained by their use in longer, "complex predicate" constructions (CP), such as Have a hug?
Paper 1 examined the use of words that can appear as noun or verb, in the speech of nine English-speaking children (aged 1;3--2;6) and their caregivers. Children showed a strong polarization in their productions, using a majority of object words consistently as nouns and non-object words consistently as verbs. However, children also showed some flexibility, and used fewer non-object words as nouns than object words as verbs.
Paper 2 investigated words used by caregivers in CPs to those that were not in the speech of nine English-speaking children (aged 1;3 to 4;6). On average, words used in CPs by caregivers emerged later in child speech that non-CP words. Also, at early stages children had not mastered the use of verbs required for CPs. It was concluded that words used in CPs (i.e. action nouns), may emerge late due to their use in these expressions, and not due to a problem understanding the semantics of action words.

The purpose of this research was to study grammatical categories in the Tagalog mental lexicon using lexical decision tasks. Some linguists question whether words in Tagalog can be classified as nouns and verbs (Foley, 1998; Kaufman, 2011) because most root words can be inflected for any grammatical function and because verbs cannot be used in their uninflected form. Previous studies with English and German (Kauschke and Stenneken 2008) have shown that participants respond differently to nouns and verbs in lexical decision tasks. These studies have also shown that participants respond differently to transitive and intransitive verbs in lexical decision tasks. It was assumed that if nouns and verbs exist in Tagalog, response times to Tagalog lexical decision tasks will show similar patterns to those performed in English and German. Two experiments were performed to examine whether words are classified as nouns and verbs in the Tagalog mental lexicon and whether other factors affected that classification. For the experiments, native speakers of Tagalog participated in lexical decision tasks and response times were measured. The first experiment tested the classification of root nouns and verbs. Contrary to findings in other languages, there was no significant difference between response times to nouns and verbs. However, there were differences in response times to nouns from different semantic categories and to verbs with different morphosyntactic structures. The second experiment examined the classification of inflected nouns and verbs. Again, the results showed no difference between response times to nouns and verbs. There was also no difference between transitive and intransitive verbs. However, there was a slight difference between verbs of different voice inflections. The results of the experiments suggest the while the grammatical classes of nouns and verbs may not be the most important features of words in the Tagalog mental lexicon, they may still play a role since different features, semantics or morphosyntactics, did affect the responses to words from the different categories.

This PhD thesis starts from the observation of constructions with the verb dar in Brazilian Portuguese and it proposes an analysis and classification of these constructions. The analysis of all constructions found in corpus is systematic and consistent, based on Transformational Grammar (HARRIS, 1964) and on Lexicon-Grammar approach (GROSS, 1975; GROSS, 1981). Both theories adopt formal and experimental criteria to make reproducible the identification of base sentences and the classification of constructions with the verb dar. The classification was based on structural and syntactic properties, leading to four classes or categories: (i) full verb or distributional verb, from which 8 verbal senses could be identified; (ii) causative operator verb, whose constructions could be subclassified in 4 groups, depending on the semantic type of the predicative noun; (iii) the verb as a fixed element, in idioms or in proverbs; and (iv) support verb, which is selected by a predicative noun. The first part of this thesis analyzes the constructions with the verb dar as a full verb, as a causative operator verb and as a fixed verb. The second part of this thesis debribes the support verb constructions (SVC), which are formed by the support verb dar (Vsup) and the predicative noun (Npred). This description is extensive, considering all the occurrences in the corpus adopted and identifying the main formal, distributional and transformational SVC properties. These properties were described and formalized in a Lexicon-Grammar table, which is a binary matrix: each line corresponds to a lexical entry (Npred) and each column corresponds to a syntactic property of the construction. In the intersection between each line and each column, we sign “+” or “-”, respectively, if the property is verified or not. The third part of the thesis presents an automatic syntactic analysis of SVC, by using an approach based in dependency rules between its constituents. The rules are automatically generated from the L-G matrix data and, then, those rules are used by the parser in order to extract the dependency between the Npred and the Vsup. Thus, this work aims to advance the state of the art of the general verbal classification in Portuguese and Automatic Processing of Natural Languages, to contribute to the development of computational-lexical resources (the Lexicon-Grammar of nominal constructions) and with automatic parsing.
Esta tese parte da observação das construções com o verbo dar em corpus em Português Brasileiro e propõe uma análise e classificação dessas construções, de forma sistemática e consistente, com base na Gramática Transformacional de operadores (HARRIS, 1964; HARRIS, 1978) e no modelo teórico-metodológico do Léxico-Gramática (GROSS, 1975; GROSS, 1981). Ambas as teorias adotam critérios formais/estruturais e procedimentos experimentais reprodutíveis para a identificação das frases de base e que adotamos para a classificação das construções com o verbo dar. A classificação dessas construções foi baseada em suas estruturas e propriedades sintáticas, tendo sido identificadas quatro categorias ou tipos de construções fundamentais em que esse verbo ocorre: (i) verbo pleno (distribucional), de onde se identificam 8 sentidos diferentes; (ii) verbo-operador causativo; (iii) o verbo constituinte de uma frase fixa, seja em expressões cristalizadas seja em provérbios; e (iv) verbo-suporte, um tipo particular de auxiliar que é selecionado por um nome predicativo. A primeira parte da tese analisa os três primeiros tipos sintático-semânticos do verbo dar (pleno, causativo e fixo). A segunda parte da tese analisa e descreve as construções com verbo-suporte (CVS), formadas pelo verbo-suporte (Vsup) dar e um nome predicativo (Npred). Essa descrição é sistemática, buscando recensear o máximo possível de construções em corpus e identificando as principais propriedades formais, distribucionais e transformacionais das CVS. As propriedades são formalizadas por meio de uma matriz de dados, a qual representa de maneira compacta a informação linguística relevante para a descrição dessas construções. A terceira parte da tese apresenta uma proposta de análise sintática automática das CVS, usando uma abordagem baseada em regras de dependência entre seus constituintes. As regras são geradas automaticamente a partir das informações constantes na matriz do L-G e, em seguida, são usadas pelo analisador sintático automático para extrair uma dependência entre o Npred e o Vsup ao identificar a CVS. Assim, este trabalho objetiva avançar o estado da arte da classificação geral dos verbos em Português e do Processamento Automático de Línguas Naturais, no sentido de contribuir com o desenvolvimento de recursos léxico-computacionais (o Léxico-Gramática das construções nominais) para a tarefa de análise sintática automática.

To date, no real consensus has emerged among syntacticians about how to derive verb-initial order (V1); but the two main approaches, \(V^0\)-raising and VP-raising, receive particularly widespread support in the literature. The syntax of Niuean pseudo noun incorporation (PNI) has played an important role in the propagation of the VP-raising analysis (Massam 2001), especially for VSO languages and languages with a VSO option. In this thesis, I present an analysis of the prosody of Niuean PNI and show that the PNI verb and incorporated argument form a prosodic constituent. While this result is consistent with the syntactic analysis of Massam (2001), it is also consistent with a prosodic restructuring analysis that explains the VOS order of PNI by appealing to prosodic well-formedness. I take the second approach. Specifically, the principle behind Selkirk's (1984) Sense Unit Condition requires that the verb and its internal argument(s) form a unique phonological phrase. In order to satisfy this requirement, the incorporated argument moves into a position adjacent to the verb at PF. Positionally motivated categorical feature sharing (Adger and Svenonius 2011; Pesetsky and Torrego 2007) allows PF to reference the head-argument relationship between the verb and its internal argument, even though they are not sent to PF in structurally adjacent positions. The main result for the syntactic analysis of Niuean is that \(V^0\)-raising replaces VP-raising. The benefits of the \(V^0\)-raising approach include i) less phonologically vacuous structure in places where Niuean has overt morphology, e.g., a perpetually null \(T^0\) in the face of overt tense markers; and ii) observance of the idea that thematic roles are correlated to structural positions. Thus, the prosodic analysis of Niuean PNI has a number of positive outcomes for Niuean syntax, as well as the potential to simplify the derivation of VSO cross-linguistically.

In this thesis, we study the development of linguistic concepts (corresponding to a subset of nouns, verbs and adjectives) on a humanoid robot. To accomplish this goal, we use affordances, a notion first proposed by J.J. Gibson to describe the action possibilities offered to an agent by the environment. Using the affordances formalization framework of Sahin et al., we have implemented a learning system on a humanoid robot and obtained the required data from the sensorimotor experiences of the robot. The system we developed (1) can learn verb, adjective and noun concepts, (2) represent them in terms of strings of prototypes and dependencies based on affordances, (3) can accurately recognize the concept of novel objects and events, and (4) can be used for tasks such as goal emulation and multi step planning.

No presente estudo descrevemos e analisamos, sob o viés morfossintático, as partes do discurso que se diferenciam no dialeto Timbira conhecido como Pykobjê- Gavião (Tronco Macro-Jê, Família Jê). Através de uma abordagem tipológicofuncionalista, discutimos (i) aspectos de tipologia e ordem de palavras, (ii) distinção entre as duas classes de palavras mais comuns no rol das línguas naturais do mundo, isto é, nome e verbo e (iii) demais classes de palavras observáveis nessa variante linguística, na medida em que se relacionam a nome e verbo. Veremos que os nomes funcionam em Pykobjê-Gavião, basicamente, como núcleo de argumento; ao passo que o verbo, que é mais fomentador de relações, tem como principal atribuição dentro da frase atuar como núcleo de predicado. Os verbos se dividem, por sua vez, em verbos intransitivos simples (único argumento: Sa, So ou Sio) ou intransitivos estendidos e verbos transitivos simples (dois argumentos: A e P) ou transitivos estendidos. Para fundamentar a análise utilizaremos, principalmente, Comrie (1985), Dik (1997), Dryer (1999), Givón (1997, 2001), Payne (1997) e Schachter (2007).
In this thesis, we have described and analyzed, under the bias morphosyntactic, the parts-of-speech systems we could differ in one Timbiras dialect, known as Pykobjê- Gavião (Macro-Jê Branch, Jê Family). Via a functional-typological approach, we have discussed (i) some aspects about language typology and word order correlations, (ii) some distinctions between noun and verb classes, i.e., the most usual word classes among all natural languages and (iii) some others word classes we could observe in this dialect to extent that they are related to noun and verb. We will see that the names work in Pykobjê-Gavião basically as the core of the argument, whereas the verb, which is high promoter relations, within the clause acts mainly as the core of the predicate. Verbs can be divided for analysis into intransitive verbs (single argument: Sa, So or Sio) or extended intransitive verbs and transitive verbs (two arguments: A and P) or extended transitive verbs. To support our analysis we will use, mainly, Comrie (1985), Dik (1997), Dryer (1999), Givón (1997, 2001), Payne (1997) e Schachter (2007).

Most current theories of language production assume that there are a number of distinct stages intervening between the generation of a preverbal message and its articulation, with stages of linguistic processing at semantic, syntactic, lexical and word-form representations. It is commonly assumed that these processes are separate and driven by lexical entries; for example as in the lemma model of lexical access (e.g. Levelt et al., 1999). While there has been much research into the processes underlying the semantic and phonological components of production, there has been less empirical investigation of syntactic processes, and in particular the nature of the syntactic representations that underlie production. This thesis presents an empirical investigation into the nature of syntactic representations and processing, based on syntactic priming (Bock, 1986). It focuses on a number of specific issues: how syntactic formulation is affected by time constraints, whether syntactic representations are accessed in the same way for written and spoken production, and to what degree semantic and phonological factors can affect syntactic encoding. The finding that speakers have a tendency to reuse syntactic structure in consecutive utterances is replicated using a sentence completion task (Pickering & Branigan, 1998). In addition the research suggests that these processes can be altered when speakers are under time pressure. Further studies demonstrate that syntax is accessed in the same way for written and spoken production, consistent with an account where syntactic information is represented at a modality neutral level of representation. A dialogue task demonstrates that syntactic information is represented for nouns in a similar manner as for verbs, and that syntactic representations are likely to be shared between comprehension and production. In addition, further experiments show that semantic factors can influence syntactic encoding where phonological factors do not.

The present dissertation investigated children's ability to understand denominal verbs and deverbal nouns that share the same forms as their parent words (e.g. brushv/brushn). Specifically, we sought to answer two general questions: 1) When do young children acquire class extension rules for denominal verbs and deverbal nouns? 2) How do children acquire these rules? We addressed these questions using a series of studies in which we tested children's ability to understand and produce flexible noun-verb pairs. The results from the study reported in Chapter 2 demonstrated that while both 2.5- and 3-year-old French-speaking children were able to understand novel nouns and verbs, only the 3-year-old children were able to understand novel denominal verbs and deverbal nouns derived from these parent words. This suggests that children acquire class extension rules for denominal verbs and deverbal nouns by 3 years of age. The results from the two studies reported in Chapter 3 demonstrated that children's ability to produce and understand flexible noun-verb pairs is related to the amount of flexible use in their input. Furthermore, children tend to use more object-denoting words flexibly than non-object and action denoting words. This suggests that children use the semantic and distributional cues associated with the flexible use of object-denoting words in their input to learn the flexible use of object-denoting words, and subsequently form class extension rules. The study reported in Chapter 4 confirmed this finding by demonstrating that 2.5-year-old children can only understand the flexible use of novel object-denoting noun-verb pairs in an experimental task if they are provided with semantic information coupled with noun and verb distributional cues in the input of the teaching trial. If they are provided with semantic information coupled with noun only distributional cues, they cannot do so. Furthermore, after having observed the flexible use of two object-denoting words, at least some of the 2.5-year-olds tested were able to understand a novel denominal-verb based on their understanding of the parent noun. Altogether, the results from the present dissertation are the first to provide direct evidence that young children acquire class extension rules by 3 years of age, by using the semantic and distributional cues that accompany the flexible use of object-denoting words in their input.
La présente thèse enquête sur la capacité des enfants à comprendre les verbes dénominaux et les noms déverbaux qui possèdent la même forme que leurs mots parents (e.g., il brossev / une brossen). Plus précisément, nous avons cherché à répondre à deux questions: 1) Quand les jeunes enfants acquièrent-ils des règles d'extension pour les verbes dénominaux et les noms déverbaux? 2) Comment les enfants acquièrent-ils ces règles? Nous avons abordé ces questions en utilisant une série d'études dans lesquelles nous avons testé la capacité des enfants à comprendre et à produire des paires de noms-verbes flexibles. Dans le Chapitre 2, les résultats de l'étude démontrent que même si les enfants francophones de 2 ans 1/2 et 3 ans sont capables de comprendre de nouveaux noms et verbes, seuls les enfants de 3 ans sont capables de comprendre de nouveaux verbes dénominaux et noms déverbaux dérivés de ces mots parents. Avec des informations sémantiques couplées avec un contexte nominal seulement, ils ne peuvent pas le faire. En outre, après avoir observé l'utilisation flexible de deux mots désignant des objets, au moins une partie des enfants de 2 ans 1/2 testés étaient capables de comprendre un nouveau verbe dénominal à partir de leur compréhension du nom parent. En conclusion, les résultats de la présente thèse sont les premiers à fournir une preuve directe que les jeunes enfants acquièrent des règles d'extension des 3 ans, à l'aide des indices sémantiques et contextuels qui accompagnent l'utilisation flexible des mots dénotant objets.

This study investigated the neural bases underlying representation of nouns and verbs at the semantic, lexical form, and morpho-syntactic levels in Mandarin Chinese, a language with little inflectional morphology. Compared with other studies employing European languages with rich inflections, examination of Chinese would allow the separation of conceptual and morpho-syntactic operations based on different stimulus formats and experimental paradigms. To deal with both the theoretical and design issues in previous studies, several additional measures were taken. First, at each cognitive level, two experiments, one receptive and one expressive, were conducted. Moreover, convergence across experiments at the same cognitive level was computed in order to search for taskindependent grammatical class effects. Second, both concrete and abstract nouns and verbs were included, and conjunction analyses across the two concreteness levels were employed to ensure the generalizability of the findings to all nouns and verbs. Results revealed greater activation for verbs in the left posterior lateral temporal gyri in experiments at both semantic and morpho-syntactic levels, and stronger responses in the prefrontal cortex, including left BA47 and the supplementary motor area, only for morpho-syntactic processing associated with nominal grammatical morphemes, namely, classifiers. No differential levels of activation for nouns and verbs were observed in tasks emphasizing word form representation. While greater activation for processing of nominal classifiers in prefrontal areas may reflect differences in computational complexity associated with selection of grammatical morphemes, the involvement of left posterior lateral temporal cortex has been interpreted as reflecting semantic processing of verbs. The nature of processes represented in each of these regions was further discussed with findings from previous relevant studies. Finally, future studies are proposed for further exploration into the neural mechanisms underlying presentation of nouns and verbs using more recently developed methods of analyses.

En este trabajo, abordamos las nominalizaciones en kìkôngò. El objetivo era ver si existen nominalizaciones en kìkôngò y cómo funcionan. El estudio fue diseñado para dar cuenta de la operacionalidad del verbo hacer como verbo-soporte. De este estudio resulta que existen dos tipos principales de nominalizaciones en kìkôngò: nominalizaciones léxicas y sintácticas. De igual modo, el verbo hacer juega normalmente su papel de verbo-soporte. Sin embargo, en kìkôngò, encontramos cuatro equivalentes del verbo hacer que son los Vsup sá, tá, sála y vánga. Estos son verbos generales aplicados a . No obstante las intersecciones entre estos verbos, cada uno tiene características específicas con respecto a los demás. Recogimos un corpus de 1320 entradas con 1257 nombres predicativos y 63 casos de fijación. El verbo sá incluye el nombre más grande de entradas con 41, 8%, seguido de tá con 25, 3%, luego sála con 17% y finalmente vánga viene en último lugar con 15, 8%. De hecho, los sustantivos predicativos presentan limitaciones cuanto al número en la medida en que algunos tienen un empleo masivo y otros tienen un empleo cuantificable. No hay restricciones en cuanto a la determinación.
Dans ce travail, nous avons abordé les nominalisations en kìkôngò. L’objectif était de voir si les nominalisations existent en kìkôngò et comment elles fonctionnent. L’étude visait l’opérationnalité de faire comme verbe-support. Il ressort de cette étude que les nominalsations existent en kìkôngò avec deux principaux types : nominalisations lexicales et syntaxiques. De même, faire joue vraiment le rôle de verbe-support. Toutefois, en kìkôngò, nous avons rencontré quatre équivalents de faire, ce sont les Vsup sá, tá, sála et vánga. Ces derniers sont tous des verbes généraux appliqués aux . Nonobstant les intersections entre ces verbes, chacun a des spécificités par rapport aux autres. Nous avons recueilli un corpus de 1320 entrées dont 1257 noms prédicatifs et 63 cas de figement. Le verbe sá comprend le plus grand nombre d’entrées avec 41, 8%, suivi de tá avec 25, 3%, ensuite sála avec 17% et vánga vient en dernière position avec 15, 8%. En effet, les noms prédicatifs présentaient des contraintes quant au nombre dans la mesure où certains ont un emploi massif et d’autres un emploi comptable. Il n’y a pas de restrictions quant à la détermination.

De igual modo, o verbo fazer desempenha normalmente a sua função de verbo-suporte. Todavia, em kìkôngò, encontramos quatro equivalentes de fazer que são os verbos sá, tá, sála e vánga. Estes são verbos gerais aplicados às . Não obstante as intersecções entre eles, cada verbo tem particularidades em relação aos outros. Recolhemos um corpus de 1320 entradas repartidas em 1257 nomes predicativos e 63 casos de expressões idiomáticas. O verbo sá foi o mais usado com 41, 8% seguido de tá com 25, 3%, em seguida sála com 17% e por fim vem vánga com 15, 8%. In this work, we analyzed nominalizations in kìkôngò. The objective was to see if nominalizations exist in kìkôngò and how it works. We studied the verb to do/make as light-verb. It appears from this study that the kìkôngò nominalizations exist with two main types: lexical and syntactic nominalizations. Likewise, the verb to do/make plays ordinarily its role of light-verb. However, in kìkôngò, we met four equivalents of the verb to do/make that are the Vsup sá, tá, sála and vánga . These are general verbs applied to . Notwithstanding the intersections between these verbs, each has specific features with respect to the other. We collected a corpus of 1320 entries with 1257 predicative nouns and 63 cases of idiomatic expressions. The verb sá includes the greatest number of entries with 41, 8 %, followed by tá with 25,3%, then sála with 17% and the verb vánga comes in last place with 15, 8%. Indeed, predicative nouns presented restrictions about their number because some of them have massive employment and other have countable employment. There are no restrictions for the noun determination.

The present work consists of a descriptive analysis of the Brazilian sign language (Libras) under the theoretical perspectives of functional, cognitive and typological linguistics, along with a discussion on a linguistic universal that has been considered by Greenberg (1966) as an absolute – a feature shared by all languages around the world – namely, that “all the languages make a distinction between Noun and Verb” (GREENBERG, 1966). The main goal of the research is to confront the analysis of libras with the existing typological findings on this so-called absolute universal, in order to investigate the degree to which such universal can be easily applicable to sign languages (SL) as well, or whether the SL data can interfere with the “absolute universal” status of the distinction between the lexical categories Noun and Verb. The research is a qualitative report on a case study based on linguistic data. The participants of the research were five deaf adults fluent in Libras, from different parts of Brazil. The database for the research consisted of free narratives in Libras on varied themes, recorded in video, plus a sociolinguistic questionnaire. The theoretical framework adopted for the analysis includes cognitive, functional and typological studies on the categories Noun and Verb in oral languages (OL), such as Givón (2001), Schachter and Shopen (2007), Langacker (1997,2008), Praça (2007); and in SL, mainly, Quadros and Karnopp (2004), Salles et al. (2007), Zeshan (2002), Pizzio (2011), Lima (2012). The analysis of the data has demonstrated an inconsistency with regard to the parameter Movement as the distinctive element for the establishment of Noun and Verb as lexical categories in Libras. It has also shown that certain criteria considered distinctive for such categories in OL are not necessarily adequate for an analysis of SL data, and that such inadequacy may be related to the specificities of each language modality. The present work hopes to contribute for a broader understanding on the cognitive and functional factors involved in the categorization of Nouns and Verbs in the languages of the world, both Oral and Signed.
O presente trabalho é composto de uma análise descritiva da língua de sinais brasileira (libras), sob as perspectivas teóricas da linguística funcional, cognitiva e da tipologia linguística. O objetivo da pesquisa é o de discutir sobre um universal linguístico considerado absoluto por Greenberg (1966) - um traço compartilhado por todas as línguas do mundo. O universal em questão é “todas as línguas fazem distinção entre Nome e Verbo” (GREENBERG, 1966). Pretende-se, mediante a análise de dados da libras, confrontar os estudos tipológicos existentes sobre universais linguísticos absolutos, investigar a aplicabilidade de universais linguísticos às línguas de sinais (LS) e apontar como os dados da libras podem interferir no status de “absoluto” do universal linguístico sobre a distinção entre Nome e Verbo. Esta pesquisa apresenta as características de uma pesquisa qualitativa e do estudo de caso como método de coletas de dados. Os participantes da pesquisa foram cinco surdos adultos de diferentes regiões do Brasil. Os instrumentos da pesquisa foram narrativas livres enunciadas em libras, de temas variados, registradas em vídeos, e um questionário sociolinguístico. A análise de dados considera alguns estudos realizados sobre as categorias Nome e Verbo em línguas orais (LO): Givón (2001), Schachter e Shopen (2007), Langacker (1997, 2008), Praça (2007); e em LS: Quadros e Karnopp (2004), Salles et al. (2007), Zeshan (2002), Pizzio (2011), Lima (2012). Percebe-se em nosso corpus uma inconsistência do parâmetro movimento como elemento distintivo das categorias Nome e Verbo na libras, certas inaplicabilidades de alguns critérios distintivos nas LO para tais categorias nas LS, e a necessidade de considerar vários tipos de critérios e a especificidade da modalidade na análise de dados da libras. A contribuição desta pesquisa é a discussão de um universal considerado absoluto, apontando para a possibilidade de se entender as categorias Nome e Verbo sob uma visão mais ampla e contextualizada.

The objective of this paper is to analyze some ‘morphic’ and semantic-syntactic properties that allow us to define Noun and Verb in Brazilian Sign Language (BSL). It is based on a contemporary approach of linguistic analysis named functional-cognitive (Croft e Cruse, 2004; Fauconnier e Turnner, 1998, 2008; Givón, 2001; Langacker, 1987, 1990, 1991, 2008 e Taylor, 2002). In this perspective, a linguistic analysis asserts that the code should be regarded as dynamic and likely to suffer changes that come from the speaking community and the universe, never as an immutable entity. In this way, this research bases itself on the fact that in BSL, the processes of cognitive nature and discursive-pragmatic nature motivate the distribution of such linguistic code in terms of categories. The data analysis is done in two distinct moments. First, we showed analysis observations concerning those signs in BSL that are related to Nouns and Verbs in Brazilian Portuguese (BP), that is, we worked with nominal notions and verbal notions based on the prototypical semantic characteristics proposed by Givón (2001). At this stage, it was possible to link the prototypical semantic characteristics that are correlated to Verbs and Nouns in BP. Afterwards, we analyzed the grammatical criteria that are typical of the language being studied based on bigger constructions. In such analyses, we verified that a first criterion to identifying a contrast between verbal and nominal notions, in BSL, was semantic feature dynamicity, which separates dynamic events/activities from entities/states more stable in time.
Este trabalho objetiva analisar algumas propriedades ‘mórficas’ e sintático-semânticas que nos permitam definir as categorias lexicais Nome e Verbo na Língua de Sinais Brasileira (LSB). Fundamenta-se em uma abordagem contemporânea de análise linguística denominada Cognitivo-funcional (Croft e Cruse, 2004; Fauconnier e Turnner, 1998, 2008; Givón, 2001; Langacker, 1987, 1990, 1991, 2008 e Taylor, 2002). Nessa perspectiva, uma análise linguística implica que se considere o código como dinâmico e passível de mudanças advindas da relação entre comunidade falante e o universo, jamais como uma entidade imutável. Dessa forma, esta pesquisa parte do pressuposto de que na LSB os processos de natureza cognitiva e de natureza pragmático-discursiva motivam a distribuição do código linguístico em estudo em termos de categorias. Este trabalho envolveu pesquisa de campo, com dados coletados especialmente para esta investigação, através de narrativas de surdos adultos usuários de LSB. A análise dos dados se dá em dois momentos distintos. Primeiramente, explicitamos observações de análise sobre aqueles sinais em LSB que se correlacionam com Nome e os que se correlacionam com Verbo no Português do Brasil (PB), ou seja, trabalhamos com noções nominais e noções verbais com base nas características semânticas prototípicas propostas por Givón (2001). Nesta etapa foi possível traçar as características semânticas prototípicas daqueles sinais que se correlacionam com Verbos e Nomes no PB. Em seguida, analisamos critérios gramaticais internos à língua em estudo a partir de construções maiores. Nesta análise verificou-se que um primeiro critério para a identificação de um contraste entre noções verbais e nominais, na LSB, foi o traço semântico de dinamicidade, que separa eventos/ações, dinâmicos, de entidades/estados, mais estáveis no tempo.

Nesta tese, discutem-se, dentre outros, os conceitos de \"auditório universal\", de Perelman (2000); o de \"contrato de comunicação\", de Charaudeau (1992); os conceitos de duplo vínculo e enquadres, propostos por Bateson (1972), e abre-se também espaço para os principais tipos de paradoxos. Nela apresentase ainda a teoria dos semas e de sua combinatória, segundo Langendoen (1971), e, finalmente, analisa-se o sermão pelo Bom sucesso das armas de Portugal contra as de Holanda. O trabalho tem por objetivo evidenciar que o discurso religioso do Padre Antônio Vieira, no Sermão Pelo bom sucesso das armas de Portugal contra as de Holanda, é um discurso paradoxal porque desconstrói a si próprio. Para atingir tal propósito, confrontam-se os argumentos de que Vieira faz uso para dirigir-se a Deus, no referido sermão, com os textos das Sagradas Escrituras; analisa-se a argumentatividade das formas nominais do verbo, com ênfase particular na estrutura do gerúndio, enquanto ato ilocucional, a partir do Sermão da Sexagésima, e descreve-se um tipo de paradoxo pragmático: a roda argumentativa.
In this thesis, among others, the concepts of \"universal auditorium\", from Perelman (2000); \"communication contract\", from Charaudeau (1992); the concepts of double bind and frames, proposed by Bateson (1972) are discussed, and room is opened for the main types of paradox. In this one, the theory of semantic traits and its combinatory, according to Langedoen (1971) is also presented and, finally, the sermon For the good success of Portugal\'s weapons against Holland\'s is analyzed. The work has as a scope to evidence that the religious speech from Father Antônio Vieira, at the sermon For the good success of Portugal\'s weapons against Holland\'s, is a paradoxal speech for it unbuilds itself. To reach such purpose, the arguments Vieira uses to address God are confronted, at the referred sermon, with the Holy Scriptures\' texts; the argumentativity of the nominal forms of the verbs is analyzed, with particular emphasis on the structure of the gerund, as an illocutionary act, starting from Sermon of the Sixtieth, and a kind of pragmatic paradox is created: the argumentative round.

Vietovardis Lietuva rašytiniuose šaltiniuose minimas nuo 1009-ųjų metų. Iš Lietuvių kalbos žodyno (LKŽe) buvo išrinkti 58 dariniai turintys kamieną lietuv- ir suklasifikuoti kategorinėmis klasėmis (kalbos dalimis). Juos sudaro 31 daiktavardis, 11 būdvardžių ir 16 veiksmažodžių. Iš daiktavardžio Lietuva išvesti 5 dariniai. Pastebėta, kad vienintelį darinį lietuvis išvestą iš daiktavardžio Lietuva supa didžiausias semantinis ir darybinis giminiškų žodžių laukas. Jį sudaro 22 dariniai (15 vedinių ir 7 dūriniai): 18 daiktavardžių, 1 būdvardis ir 3 veiksmažodžiai. Tolesnės darybos rezultatas yra dar 31 darinys: 10 daiktavardžių, 9 būdvardžiai ir 12 veiksmažodžių. Iš vietovardžio Lietuva sudaryti dariniai kartais laikytini darybiniais sinonimais arba darybiniais variantais: sudarytos 4 DS ir 3 DV eilės. Sudarytos 4 leksinių sinonimų eilės. LKŽe neužfiksuoti deminutyvai, išskyrus daiktavardį lietuvaitis, -ė.
The name of Lithuania in hand-written sources is mentioned since 1009. From Lithuanian dictionary (LKŽe) it has been selected 58 word-formations having a root “lietuv-“ and divided in classes on categories (in parts of speeches). It includes 31 noun, 11 adjectives and 16 verbs. From a noun Lietuva are formed 5 word-formations. It is established that unique word-formation “lietuvis“ formed from noun Lietuva surrounds a huge field of related words. It is made by 22 word-formations (15 – derivatives and 7 compounds): 18 nouns, 1 adjective and 3 verbs. The result of further formation is 31 word-formation: 10 nouns, 9 adjectives and 12 verbs. Word-formations formed from a word “Lietuva“ sometimes are considered as the formed synonyms or formed cases: are created 4 DS and 3 DV turns. It was created 4 turns of lexical synonyms. There are no more diminutives in the Lithuanian dictionary (LKŽe) except the noun lietuvaitis, -ė.

Les critères de cette classification n’étant pas toujours explicites, l’objectif est, dans un premier temps, d’en comprendre les paramètres syntactico sémantiques puis de l'affiner afin d'obtenir des classes plus petites, mais homogènes du point de vue du sentiment exprimé, et d’y intégrer les noms et / ou adjectifs morphologiquement apparentés aux verbes et partageant les mêmes propriétés syntactico-sémantique. This essay deals with the issue of readability, the term readability referring to what it is that makes a reader perceive a text as difficult or easy. Some factors are related to the reader but there are also those which depend on the text as such, one such factor being style which is the one that will be focused on in this essay. The investigation is based on the analysis and comparison of a complete version and an abridged version of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, and the questions to be investigated are whether the author of the abridged version has succeeded in making it less complicated, and if he or she has done so by considering stylistic features said to be affecting readability. Further, this essay is divided into four chapters. The first chapter contains the background for the analysis and is divided into 4 parts dealing with the following aspects: the definition of readability, early research on readability, later research on readability, and difficult and easy language. Chapter two describes the limitations made and the method used for the analysis which involves looking at the noun phrase, the verb phrase, and the clause. Chapter three gives a detailed description of the corpus investigated. Moving on to chapter four, this is where the results of the investigation are presented. This is done by dividing it into four different subchapters, each of them dealing with issues related to the different areas described in the method. Each of the subchapters then begins with the presentation of the results for each edition which is then followed by a comparative discussion. The essay ends with a conclusion part where conclusions regarding the four areas presented in the analysis are made along with the answering of research questions.

This thesis examines the respective poiesis of two elemental aspects of our quotidian condition as they have come to be assembled in our present modernity. The two aspects under consider-ation are drawn out from two primary pieces of literature. The first piece of literature to be put to use is Georges Perec’s novel Life – a user’s manual from which the presence of the present and related flow of Time and its relation to our quotidian condition is discussed, whilst the second piece of literature put to use is James Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man from which the poiesis of life forces on our quotidian condition, as derivative of the formative life of the main protagonist of this novel, is discussed. The two novels in question aim to serve as a ‘mirror’ in the Benjaminian mode of an Erfahrung, through which two elemental aspects of our quotidian condition might be grasped. The thesis aims to analyse how these two aspects of our quotidian condition have come to be assembled and constructed historically, culturally, socially and personally, and to examine how our quotidian condition actually is as such in reference to their poiesis. In doing so a poetics of two elemental conditions of our ordinary life is hope to be drawn, and that for the purpose of bringing each aspect’s respective constitutive mechanics to a horizonal level of consciousness. The aimed for purpose of the thesis is for each reader to begin to think through their quotidian condition again for themselves, and that any resultant understanding be put to a political use through a particular ‘art of living’.

This study examines seven deverbal nominalizing suffixes through theoretical framework and previous research. They include the morphological aspects, productivity of suffixes, base-driven approach and phonological neutral and nonneutral suffixes. Learners participated in an instrument to account for their competence of verb-noun derivation. The participants presented knowledge of relational, syntactic and relatively distributional morphology. Also, some suffixes are more productive than others and that was shown through the level of accuracy of these suffixes. The suffixes -ing, -er, and (at)-ion are of high accuracy and thus productive. Whereas the suffixes -ment, -ent/-ant, -ence/-ance and -al are less accurate and less productive. The underlying reason behind the productivity and non-productivity of these suffixes is because of the phonological transparency factors. Suffixes that do not cause internal phonological changes in the base presented high accuracy and easily learned, while suffixes that require internal phonological changes posed challenges to learners. The -ment suffix is neutral, no internal change required, however; its accuracy went down in this study.

Seit etwa zwei Jahrzehnten stellt die kognitive und neuronale Verarbeitung von Nomen und Verben einen bedeutsamen Forschungsschwerpunkt im Bereich der Neurolinguistik und Neuropsychologie dar. Intensive Forschungsbemühungen der letzten Jahre erbrachten eine Reihe von Ergebnissen, die jedoch überwiegend inkonsistent und widersprüchlich sind. Eine häufig vertretene Annahme im Bezug auf die neuronale Basis der Nomen und Verb Verarbeitung ist die so genannte anterior-posterior Dissoziation. Demnach werden Nomen in temporalen und Verben in frontalen Regionen der sprachdominanten, linken Hemisphäre verarbeitet. Die vorliegende Dissertation untersucht mit Hilfe der funktionellen Magnetresonanztomographie, welche kortikalen Regionen in den Abruf von Nomen und Verben beim stillen Bildbennen involviert sind. Ferner wird der Einfluss des Faktors age-of-acquisition (Erwerbsalter) auf die Hirnaktivierung beim Bildbenennen überprüft. Die Ergebnisse der Studie zeigen, dass der Abruf von Nomen und Verben ähnliche kortikale Aktivierungen in bilateral okzipitalen sowie links frontalen, temporalen und inferior parietalen Regionen hervorruft, wobei für Verben stärkere Aktivierungen in links frontalen und bilateral temporalen Arealen beobachtet wurden. Dieses Ergebnis widerspricht der Annahme einer anterior-posterior Dissoziation. Die beobachteten Aktivierungsmuster unterstützen dagegen die Auffassung, dass ein gemeinsames Netzwerk bestehend aus anterioren und posterioren Komponenten für die Verarbeitung von Nomen und Verben beim Bildbenennen verantwortlich ist. Die Studie ergab ferner, dass kortikale Aktivierungen beim Bildbenennen durch das Erwerbsalter moduliert werden. Dabei zeigten sich Aktivierungen für später erworbene Wörter im linken inferioren Frontallappen und im basal temporalen Sprachareal. Die Ergebnisse werden diskutiert und interpretiert vor dem Hintergrund aktueller kognitiver und neuroanatomischer Modelle der Sprachverarbeitung.
The cognitive and neuronal mechanisms underlying the retrieval of nouns and verbs are a complex issue, which has attracted the interest of neurolinguists and cognitive neuroscientists during the last two decades. Unfortunately, the results emerged from previous studies are often contradictory. A frequent claim in neurolinguistic literature is the anterior-posterior dichotomy of the noun and verb retrieval. Within this framework nouns are associated with left temporal brain areas whereas verbs rely on structures in the left frontal lobe. This thesis investigates the brain areas which are involved in silent naming of German noun and verb pictures by means of event related fMRI. In addition the influence of age-of-acquisition on brain activity during picture naming was examined. Noun and verb retrieval revealed a similar pattern of bilateral occipital, left frontal, temporal and inferior parietal cortical activation, albeit verb naming resulted in stronger activation in left frontal and bilateral temporal areas. The results do not confirm the anterior-posterior hypothesis. They support rather a similar cortical network for the processing of nouns and verbs in picture naming. Furthermore the results indicated that age-of-acquisition modulates brain activation during silent picture naming. Cortical activation for late learned words was detected in the left inferior frontal cortex and in the left basal temporal language area. The data were discussed and interpreted on the basis of current cognitive and neuroanatomical models of language processing.

This study in pedagogical description is motivated by a dissatisfaction with the traditional 'structural' method of teaching English grammar to prospective English teachers at Universities in Algeria. Within the broader context of advocating a more communicative (i.e. meaning and discourse-oriented) approach to grammar teaching, I explore the hypothesis that an internalization of grammar which relates to the learners' communicative needs could be facilitated if the teacher adopts a semantic analysis of certain difficult features common to the grammar of the noun phrase and the verb phrase which would interrelate form, meaning and context of use. The adoption of such an analysis would provide the learner with an integrative approach where grammar would act as a bridge between concepts and actual use. Part I of this study examines the notions of deixis, definite reference, specificity/genericity, boundedness and enumeration which are grammaticalized in both the noun phrase and the verb phrase. Part II examines first the actual teaching situation in Algeria which concentrates on the formal system of the language in isolation from actual contexts of use and as such, goes counter tothe learner's communicative need to express meanings. The approach proposed as a possible remedy will integrate the aspectual and the communicative aspects of language through the use of learning tasks devised to increase the learner's awareness of the communicative relevance of the semantic concepts dealt with in Part I.

Nesta tese, que se propôs a explorar as gramáticas brasileiras do português publicadas no século XIX, tivemos três objetivos. O primeiro foi realizar um mapeamento exaustivo da produção gramatical brasileira do português do século XIX, o qual foi feito por meio de fontes secundárias e catálogos de bibliotecas. Tivemos conhecimento de 127 títulos e 77 reedições, o que resulta em duzentas gramáticas. A partir dos dados coletados, que, em geral, eram título, subtítulo, autor, ano de publicação, local e casa impressora, formalizamos unidades de análise para, ao relacioná-las, por meio da metodologia da História Serial (Furet 1991, Barros 2005), realizar um mapeamento descritivo e interpretativo dessa produção. Nosso segundo objetivo, tendo selecionado, com base em quatro critérios combinados (prestígio, emergência, institucionalização e diálogo), dezoito exemplares (16 títulos, 2 reedições) dos duzentos e quatro de que tivemos conhecimento, foi de realizar uma análise orientada para os conteúdos dessas obras, organizada em torno de uma possível rede conceitual. A hipótese dessa análise, baseada em Auroux (2009[1992]) e Swiggers (2010), é de que alguns conceitos poderiam ser eixo de uma rede conceitual devido à sua influência técnica e, eventualmente teórica, em uma determinada tradição de descrição linguística. Essa hipótese surgiu nos resultados de nossa pesquisa de mestrado, em que, ao notar a complexidade da dimensão técnica (cf. Swiggers 2004) de algumas obras dessa tradição, pensamos ser necessário procurar meios de tornar sua análise mais homogênea (cf. Polachini 2013, Polachini 2016). Para testá-la, examinamos o conceito-chave de \'verbo substantivo\' apresentado nas obras selecionadas, que são amiúde influenciadas pela tradição da grammaire générale francesa, ao menos até 1880, quando passa a haver também influência do método histórico-comparativo (cf. Maciel 1910, Nascentes 1939, Elia 1975, Cavaliere 2001, Parreira 2011, Polachini 2013). Ademais, foi necessário formalizar uma metodologia a fim de reconhecer a rede conceitual em torno do verbo substantivo. Primeiramente, definimos conceitos gramaticais como sendo formados por meio de processos classificatórios da cadeia falada. Tais processos têm como produto, por um lado, termos, e, por outro, conceitos. Estes últimos podem ser analisados intensionalmente, por meio de sua definição e seu lugar numa determinada taxonomia, ou extensionalmente, considerando o inventário de dados linguísticos eleitos como exemplos e eventuais ilustrações desses dados em uso. Cada conceito é, portanto, analisado por meio das seguintes categorias: definição, taxonomia, exemplos, ilustrações e por seus termos. Consideramos rede conceitual as relações travadas entre o conceito-chave, verbo substantivo, e conceitos que, na tradição da grammaire générale teriam já alguma relação com o verbo substantivo (cf. Chevalier 1968; Colombat 1992; Raby 2000; Bouard 2007), a saber: gramática e linguagem, metaclasses e classes de palavras, modificadores do nome, verbo, oração (seus elementos e sua organização) apresentadas nas obras. Essas relações podem ser de quatro tipos: (1) equivalência; (2) intersecção (3) subordinação; (4) base teórica comum. Finalmente, distinguimos no texto gramatical a descrição linguística, que chamamos de texto, e as ampliações, reflexões ou críticas realizadas sobre essa descrição, que chamamos de metatexto. Tal metodologia nos permitiu uma visão mais clara e homogênea da dimensão técnica das obras (e de seu eventual ecletismo), além de proporcionar uma visão mais complexa de continuidades e descontinuidades dessa produção, que contrasta com aquelas das revisões históricas. Ademais, os resultados apontam também para: relações entre agendas dos autores ao publicarem suas gramáticas e seu ecletismo. Nossa terceira proposta foi de que esta tese fosse não apenas uma historiografia, mas também uma epihistoriografia dessa tradição. Assim, apresentamos dois apêndices: um com informações catalográficas das 204 gramáticas de que tivemos conhecimento, organizadas cronologicamente; e outro com os paratextos das dezoito obras analisadas.
In this thesis, which approached the Brazilian grammars of Portuguese published in the 19th century, we had three objectives. The first one was to conduct a comprehensive mapping of the Brazilian grammatical production on Portuguese in the 19th century, which we carried out through secondary sources and library catalogs. We have acknowledged 127 titles and 77 re-editions, which total two hundred grammars. From the data collected, which generally consisted of title, subtitle, author, year published, publisher city and publisher name, we built standardized units of analysis so that, when analyzing their relations among one another, we conducted a descriptive and interpretative mapping of this production, adopting the methodology of Serial History (Furet 1991, Barros 2005). By selecting eighteen grammars (16 titles, 2 re-editions) out of the acknowledged two hundred works, based on four combined criteria (prestige, emergence, institutionalization and dialog), our second object was to carry out an analysis oriented to the content of these selected works, organized under a possible conceptual network. The hypothesis of this analysis, based on Auroux (2009[1992]) and Swiggers (2010), is that some concepts could work as an axis of a conceptual network due to their technical, and sometimes theoretical, influence on a specific tradition of linguistic description. This hypothesis was raised in the results of our masters research, in which, by realizing the complexity of some of this traditions grammars technical dimension (cf. Swiggers 2004), we thought it to be necessary to find ways of turning the analysis more homogeneous (cf. Polachini 2013, Polachini 2016). In order to test its effectiveness, we examined the key concept of verbo substantivo (literally: substantive verb), presented in the selected works, which are frequently influenced by the tradition of the French grammaire générale, at least until 1880, when the influence of the historical-comparative method started to take place (cf. Maciel 1910, Nascentes 1939, Elia 1975, Cavaliere 2001, Parreira 2011, Polachini 2013). Moreover, it was necessary to formalize a methodology in order to recognize the conceptual network around the verbo substantivo. First, we defined the grammatical concepts as being formed through classifying processes of spoken speech. These processes have as products, on one side, terms and, on the other, concepts. The latter can be analyzed intentionally, through its definition and its places in a specific taxonomy, or extensionally, considering the inventory of linguistic data considered as examples and any illustrations of these data in use. Each concept is, therefore, analyzed through the following categories: definition, taxonomy, examples, illustrations and by its terms. We considered as conceptual network the relations between the key concept, verbo substantivo, and concepts that, in the grammaire génerales tradition would already have some relation to the verbo substantivo (cf. Chevalier 1968; Colombat 1992; Raby 2000; Bouard 2007), such as: grammar and language, metaclasses and parts of speech, noun modifiers, verb, clause (its elements and organization) presented in the grammars. These relations can be of three types: (1) identity; (2) intersection; (3) subordination; (4) shared theoretical background. Finally, in the grammatical text, we distinguished the linguistic description, which we called text, from its expansions, reflections and critical comments on this description, which we called metatext. Such methodology allowed a clearer and more homogeneous view of the technical dimension of the works analyzed (and their often eclecticism), in addition to providing a more complex view of continuities and discontinuities of this production, which contrasts with those of the historical reviews. Furthermore, the results also point to: relations between the authors schedules when publishing their grammars and their eclecticism; and the metatexts role between teaching and linguistic reflection. Our third objective was to make this thesis not only a historiography but also a epihistoriography of this tradition. Thus, we presented two appendices: one with cataloging information of the two hundred grammars which we acknowledged, organized chronologically; and another one with the paratexts of the eighteen works analyzed.

Lexical data base building can be considered an essential task for Natural Language Processing (NLP), since the data included can be used in numerous tools, such as Parsers, Semantic Role Labelers, automatic translators, Text Simplifiers, Paraphrases Systems, Question-Answer Systems, Information Extraction Systems, among others. One kind of lexical information that can be used by these systems and, therefore, must be described and formalized is the nominal predicates, which can be defined by the union of a predicative noun and a support verb. Predicative nouns are those with arguments, and support verbs are the ones semantically empty. The latter provides to nouns the tense-aspect-person-number marks that they don t have, given their morphology. In this context, this research presents the linguistic description of 1,815 Brazilian Portuguese nominal predicates (support verb fazer and a predicative noun) according to the Lexicon-Grammar Theory. Such theory proposes that the linguistic unity of analysis is the simple clause (the predicator and its arguments). The data is inserted in a binary table, which presents the lexical entries in rows and the formal properties (structural, distributional and transformational) in columns.Twenty-nine properties were identified, such as (i) the type of prepositions; (ii) the possibility of passive voice, and others. The nominal predicates analysed were divided into 17 classes, which have syntactic regularities. This research has identified the variants of support verb fazer (make/do), in order to expand the possibilities of the ocurrence of these kinds of predicates. This research aims to contribute to the linguistic description of the Brazilian Portuguese language and NLP, providing data to be used in the future by systems that process lexicon.
A construção de bases de dados com informações lexicais pode ser considerada uma tarefa essencial para o Processamento de Línguas Naturais (PLN), pois os dados ali contidos podem ser utilizados em muitas ferramentas, como Parsers, Anotadores de Papéis Semânticos, tradutores automáticos, Simplificadores Textuais, Sistemas que lidam com paráfrases, Sistemas de Perguntas e Respostas, Sistemas de Extração de Informação, entre outros. Um tipo de informação lexical que pode ser utilizado por esses sistemas e, portanto, carece de ser descrito e formalizado, é o predicado nominal, que pode ser definido pela união de um nome predicativo (Npred) e um verbo-suporte (Vsup). Os Npred são aqueles que possuem argumentos e os Vsup são verbos considerados fracos do ponto de vista semântico e que fornecem ao nome as marcas de tempo-aspecto-pessoa-número que este não possui, devido à sua morfologia. Nesse contexto, a presente pesquisa apresenta a descrição de 1815 predicados nominais, formados pelo Vsup fazer e um nome predicativo do português do Brasil (PB), tendo como arcabouço teórico-metodológico a Léxico-Gramática, que propõe que a unidade de análise linguística seja a frase simples (o predicado e seus argumentos) e não um item lexical isolado. A representação dos predicados nominais é feita em uma matriz binária que apresenta as entradas lexicais nas linhas e as propriedades formais (estruturais, distribucionais e transformacionais) nas colunas. Neste trabalho, foram identificadas 29 propriedades, utilizadas na análise dos predicados nominais, como: (i) o tipo de preposições que introduzem os complementos; (ii) a possibilidade de haver formação de passiva, entre outras. Os predicados nominais descritos nesta pesquisa foram divididos em 17 classes, que apresentavam regularidades sintáticas. Foi realizado também o levantamento de possíveis variantes para o Vsup fazer, para expandir as possibilidades de realizações de predicados nominais com os Npred analisados nesta pesquisa. Espera-se, com este trabalho, contribuir para a Descrição Linguística do Português, por meio da análise léxico-gramática dos predicados nominais com o verbo-suporte fazer, e também contribuir para o PLN por meio da disponibilização dos dados para a futura utilização por sistemas que lidem com o léxico.

Este trabalho tem por objetivo analisar as nominalizações no que tange ao seu aspecto polissêmico e multifuncional no Português do Brasil. Parte-se do pressuposto de que a nominalização constitui uma associação paradigmática entre nomes e verbos, podendo apresentar tanto uma interpretação verbal quanto uma interpretação nominal, dependendo do contexto de ocorrência. A partir deste pres-suposto, procede-se à análise de nominalizações com a finalidade de determinar se há uma prevalência da função predicadora sobre a função designadora. Os resul-tados da análise, baseada num corpus de língua escrita jornalística contemporâ-nea, revelam que a maioria das nominalizações analisadas apresenta função predi-cadora, enquanto a função designadora apresenta-se em menor proporção. Este resultado corrobora as expectativas iniciais de que, por se tratar de um corpus com linguagem escrita jornalística, este fator favoreceria a função predicadora sobre a função designadora.
This paper analyzes nominalizations in what concerns their polysemic and/or multifunctional value is Brazilian Portuguese. It assumes that nominaliza-tion is a paradigmatic association between nouns and verbs, and that deverbal nouns can have either a verbal or a nominal interpretation, depending on the con-text of occurrence. Under this assumption, the work analyzes occurrences of de-verbal nouns with the purpose of determining whether there is a prevalence of the predicative (verbal) function over the denotative (nominal) function. The results of the analysis, based upon a corpus of contemporary journalistic written lan-guage, show that the use of deverbal nouns in predicative function is more fre-quent than that of deverbal nouns in denotative function. These results corroborate the expectation that journalistic written language would favor the use of deverbal nouns for predication, so that the denotative function would be less required.

In this thesis I analyse the English ‘stress doublets’ - bisyllabic words which are nouns with initial primary stress, and verbs with final primary stress - in a model of lexical phonology with base-driven stratification (BDLP; Giegerich 1999). The work has two main aims: to give a detailed exploration of this morphological pattern and compare it with related processes; and to test BDLP to see how well it accounts for the data. BDLP is a derivational model which uses rules and constraints. I argue that such models should be explored alongside Optimality Theory, since OT itself must admit the use of rules (LaCharite & Paradis 2000, McMahon 2000b), and does have shortcomings as a morpho-phonological model. I show that the stress doublets are almost all prefixal, and their internal complexity forms a cline from obscurity to compositional transparency. Phonologically, a line can be drawn across this continuum separating forms in which the verb’s initial syllable is stressless from those in which it has secondary stress. This line coincides with a division between the obscured or unproductive prefixations and the most transparent ones. Analysis of the semantic relationships between the nouns and verbs (cf. Clark & Clark 1979) shows another division along the same line: productive prefixations have regular noun-verb relationships, while unproductive or obscured prefixations have irregular noun-verb relationships. So stress doubletting is not one, but two patterns; these are sited on different strata in BDLP. On Stratum 1 Latinate and unproductive prefixal stress-doublets share a common underspecified root with no directional derivation: stress alternation is a matter of foot assignment, nouns being assigned two feet and verbs only one. On Stratum 2, productively prefixed verbs undergo a regular Verb-to-Noun rule. Prefixes are aligned with feet rather than prosodic words (cf. Raffelsiefen 1999). Stress doubletting derives from the different relative prominence between the two feet in nouns and verbs, assigned by the Lexical Category Prominence Rule (Hogg & McCully 1987, McCully 1997).

Semantic approaches, including semantic feature analysis (SFA), are commonly used to treat individuals with anomia (word-finding difficulties) due to nondegenerative chronic aphasia. Research has traditionally targeted nouns, with relatively few published studies targeting verbs in isolation or in comparison to nouns. Yet, verbs are essential for higher-level communications, and some evidence suggests that treating higher-level word types may have crossover benefits. Generalization to untrained words and discourse have also varied across studies.

Thus, the aim of this study was to determine if a modified SFA treatment could be effective for both nouns and verbs, to assess generalization, and to investigate potential crossover benefits. Results revealed that the treatment did improve spontaneous production of trained nouns and verbs as well as semantic retrieval of untrained words, with an unexpected result of untrained verbs achieving a higher level of spontaneous production than untrained nouns. Implications and avenues for future studies are also discussed.
